Abstract
The cell sensitivity of recombinant human alpha interferons (rIFN-alpha) of greater than 95% purity (A,D and the hybrid A/D) and crude nature (B and F) was studied in human (WISH, HeLa, AG1732), bovine (MDBK, BT), monkey (Vero), mouse (L), rabbit (RK-13), and hamster (BHK-21) cells. Based on an activity of 100% in WISH cells, the other cells responded to rIFN-alpha A as follows: AG1732 (90%), HeLa (94%), and MDBK and BT cells (170-190%). Rabbit, mouse, and hamster cells had a relative sensitivity of less than 1%. rIFN-alpha B and F were essentially equivalent to rIFN-alpha A in terms of cell sensitivity, but MDBK and BT cells were about 20 times more sensitive to rIFN-alpha D than were WISH cells and rIFN-alpha D was 1/5 to 1/10 as active on L cells as on WISH cells. The activity of the hybrid IFN A/D on bovine, mouse, and human cells was similar. The inhibitory dose50 (U/ml) of rIFN-alpha A, B, D, and F against virus infections in WISH cells were: vesicular stomatitis virus (1-4), rhinovirus types 1 and 42 (2-18), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 (45-70). Type 1 HSV, Semliki Forest (SFV) and encephalomyocarditis (EMC) viruses were tested against only rIFN-alpha A and D where SFV and EMC were the most sensitive to both IFNs (ID50-SFV, 0.2 U/ml, EMC, 1.2 U/ml) while 13 U/ml of rIFN-alpha A and D inhibited Type 1 HSV. The various rIFN-alpha s did not exhibit different antiviral spectra in vitro. When tested in mice rIFN-alpha A did not protect against infections with SFV, EMC, HSV, or influenza viruses. rIFN-alpha D and A/D protected mice infected with EMC, SFV, or HSV.

Abstract
Cell proliferation during the early phase of growth in regenerating amphibian limbs requires a permissive influence of nerves. Based on analyses of proliferative activity in denervated blastemas, it was proposed that nerves provide factors important for cells to complete the proliferative cycle rather than for mitogenesis itself. One such factor, the iron-transport protein transferrin (Tf), is abundant in regenerating peripheral nerves where it is axonally transported and released at growth cones. Using blastemas in organ culture, which have been widely used in previous investigations of the neural effect on growth, it was shown here that the growth-promoting activity of neural extract was completely removed by immuno-absorption with antiserum against Tf and restored by addition of Tf. Purified Tf or a low molecular weight ferric ionophore were as active as the neural extract in this assay, indicating that the trophic effect of Tf involves its capacity for iron delivery. Both Tf and ferric ionophore also maintained DNA synthesis in denervated blastemas in vivo. A dose-response assay indicated that purified axolotl Tf stimulates growth of cultured blastemal cells at concentrations as low as 100 ng/mL. The Tf mRNA in axolotl nervous tissue was shown by northern analysis to be similar in size to that of liver. These results are discussed together with those from previous in vitro studies of blastemal growth and support the hypothesis that cell division in the blastema depends on axonally released Tf during the early, nerve-dependent phase of limb regeneration.

Abstract
Vesicle fusion is a ubiquitous biological process involved in membrane trafficking and a variety of specialised events such as exocytosis and neurite outgrowth. The energy to drive biological membrane fusion is provided by fusion proteins called SNAREs. Indeed, SNARE proteins play critical roles in neuronal development as well as neurotransmitter and hormone release. SNARE proteins form a very tight alpha-helical bundle that can pull two membranes together, thereby initiating fusion. Whereas a great deal of attention has been paid to partner proteins that can affect SNARE function, recent genetic and biochemical evidence suggests that local lipid environment may be as important in SNARE regulation. Direct lipid modification of SNARE fusion proteins and their regulation by fatty acids following phospholipase action will be discussed here in detail. Our analysis highlights the fact that lipids are not a passive platform in vesicle fusion but intimately regulate SNARE function.

Abstract
This article examines the Canadian human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign in order to analyze the ways in which HPV and the threat of cervical cancer are framed as well as the individual risk management strategies that are made available to mothers and their daughters. The authors argue that the HPV campaign is illustrative of the moralization of health, a convergence of the regulatory discourses of moralization and medicalization in an era of bio-politics. Significantly, these discourses are put into play by a complex professional alliance that is mobilized by the extensive resources of the pharmaceutical industry. The convergence of both medical and market interests responsibilizes parents, specifically mothers, as well as schools, resulting in a vaccination program that verges on one that is mandatory. As such, HPV and cer-vical cancer prevention discourses constitute a moral regulation project directed at the regulation of the bodies of young women.

Abstract
This paper describes updates to NASA's approach for assessing and mitigating spaceflight-induced risks to human health and performance. This approach continues to evolve to meet dynamically changing risk environments: lunar missions are currently being designed and the ultimate destination will be Mars. Understanding the risks that astronauts will face during a Mars mission will depend on building an evidence base that informs not only how the humans respond to the challenges of the spaceflight environment, but also how systems and vehicles can be designed to support human capabilities and limitations. This publication documents updates to the risk management process used by the Human System Risk Board at NASA and includes changes to the likelihood and consequence matrix used by the board, the design reference mission categories and parameters, and the standardized evaluation of the levels of evidence that the board accepts when setting risk posture. Causal diagramming, using directed acyclic graphs, provides all stakeholders with the current understanding of how each risk proceeds from a spaceflight hazard to a mission-level outcome. This standardized approach enables improved communication among stakeholders and delineates how and where more knowledge can improve perspective of human system risks and which countermeasures can best mitigate these risks.

Abstract
Abstract
In a multilaboratory study, the effectiveness of an alternative method for rapid screening of Listeria species compared to traditional reference methods was demonstrated in a variety of food products. A collaborative study was conducted to compare the VIDAS® Listeria species Xpress (LSX) method and the standard cultural methods for the detection of Listeria species in foods. Six food types were tested: vanilla ice cream, cheddar cheese, raw ground beef, frozen green beans, deli turkey, and cooked shrimp. Each food, inoculated with a different Listeria strain at two levels and uninoculated test portions, was analyzed by each method. A total of 15 laboratories representing government and industry participated. In this study 1134 tests were analyzed in the statistical analysis. There were 490 positives by the VIDAS LSX method using the sample boiling step, 483 positives by the VIDAS LSX method using the Heat and Go system, and 439 positives by the standard culture methods. Overall, the Chi-square result for the VIDAS LSX method with boiling for all foods was 7.25, indicating a significant statistical difference between the VIDAS method and the standard methods at the 5% confidence. For the VIDAS LSX method with the Heat and Go system, the Chi-square result for all foods was 5.37, indicating a significant statistical difference between the VIDAS LSX assay with the Heat and Go system and the standard methods at the 5% level of significance. In both cases, the VIDAS method was more sensitive than the standard methods. The LSX method detects Listeria species in foods with negative or presumptive positive results in a minimum of 30 h compared to at least 5 days for the cultural methods. Based on the results of this collaborative study, it is recommended that the VIDAS LSX method be adopted as an AOAC Official MethodSM for the detection of Listeria species in dairy products, vegetables, seafood, raw meats and poultry, and processed meats and poultry.

Abstract
For over a decade, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has tracked and configuration-managed approximately 30 risks that affect astronaut health and performance before, during and after spaceflight. The Human System Risk Board (HSRB) at NASA Johnson Space Center is responsible for setting the official risk posture for each of the human system risks and determining-based on evaluation of the available evidence-when that risk posture changes. The ultimate purpose of tracking and researching these risks is to find ways to reduce spaceflight-induced risk to astronauts. The adverse effects of spaceflight begin at launch and continue throughout the duration of the mission, and in some cases, across the lifetime of the astronaut. Historically, research has been conducted in individual risk "silos" to characterize risk, however, astronauts are exposed to all risks simultaneously. In January of 2020, the HSRB at NASA began assessing the potential value of causal diagramming as a tool to facilitate understanding of the complex causes and effects that contribute to spaceflight-induced human system risk. Causal diagrams in the form of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are used to provide HSRB stakeholders with a shared mental model of the causal flow of risk. While primarily improving communication among those stakeholders, DAGs also allow a composite risk network to be created that can be tracked and configuration managed. This paper outlines the HSRB's pilot process for this effort, the lessons learned, and future goals for data-driven risk management approaches.

Abstract
NASA uses a continuous risk management process to seek out new knowledge of spaceflight-induced risk to human health and performance. The evidence base that informs the risk assessments in this domain is constantly changing as more information is gleaned from a continuous human presence in space and from ongoing research. However, the limitations of this evidence are difficult to characterize because fewer than 700 humans have ever flown in space, and information comes from a variety of sources that span disciplines, including engineering, medicine, food and nutrition, and many other life sciences. The Human System Risk Board (HSRB) at NASA is responsible for assessing risk to astronauts and communicating this risk to agency decision-makers. A critical part of that communication is conveying the uncertainty regarding the understanding of the changes that spaceflight induces in human processes and the complex interactions between humans and the spacecraft. Although the strength of evidence grades is common in the academic literature, these scores are often not useful for the problems of human spaceflight. The HSRB continues to update the processes used to report the levels of evidence. This paper describes recent updates to the methods used to assign the level of evidence scores to the official risk postures and to the causal diagrams used by the HSRB.
