Abstract
Dynamic contrast-enhanced breast magnetic resonance (MR) is a promising emerging technique for evaluating breast lesions. A quantitative systematic review was performed to estimate the accuracy of breast MR in the diagnosis of high-risk breast lesions and breast cancer. A comprehensive search of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CANCERLIT, LILACS, and EMBASE databases was performed from January 1985 to August 2010. The medical subjects heading (MeSH) and text words for the terms "breast neoplasm", "breast lesions", "breast cancer" and "magnetic resonance" were combined with the MeSH term diagnosis ("sensitivity and specificity"). Studies that compared breast MR with paraffin-embedded sections parameters for the diagnosis of breast lesions (benign, high-risk borderline, and breast cancer) were included. Sixty-nine studies were analyzed, which included 9,298 women with 9,884 breast lesions. Interrater overall agreement between breast MR and paraffin section diagnosis was 79% (κ = 0.55), indicating moderate agreement. Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 90% [95% CI 88-92%] and 75% [95% CI 70-79%], respectively. The pooled likelihood positive ratio was 3.64 (95% CI 3.0-4.2) and the negative ratio was 0.12 (95% CI 0.09-0.15). For breast cancer or high-risk lesions versus benign lesions, the AUC was 0.91 for breast MR and the point Q* was 0.84. In summary, breast MR is a useful pre-operative test for predicting the diagnosis of breast lesions.

Abstract
Background and Purpose Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a polyglutamine expansion in the huntingtin protein. We have previously demonstrated that the cell signalling of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is altered in a mouse model of HD. Although mGluR5-dependent protective pathways are more activated in HD neurons, intracellular Ca2+ release is also more pronounced, which could contribute to excitotoxicity. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether mGluR5 positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) could activate protective pathways without triggering high levels of Ca2+ release and be neuroprotective in HD. Experimental Approach We performed a neuronal cell death assay to determine which drugs are neuroprotective, Western blot and Ca2+ release experiments to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in this neuroprotection, and object recognition task to determine whether the tested drugs could ameliorate HD memory deficit. Key Results We find that mGluR5 PAMs can protect striatal neurons from the excitotoxic neuronal cell death promoted by elevated concentrations of glutamate and NMDA. mGluR5 PAMs are capable of activating Akt without triggering increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i); and Akt blockage leads to loss of PAM-mediated neuroprotection. Importantly, PAMs' potential as drugs that may be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases is highlighted by the neuroprotection exerted by mGluR5 PAMs on striatal neurons from a mouse model of HD, BACHD. Moreover, mGluR5 PAMs can activate neuroprotective pathways more robustly in BACHD mice and ameliorate HD memory deficit. Conclusions and Implications mGluR5 PAMs are potential drugs that may be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases, especially HD.

Abstract
Obesity is a disease that has become a serious public health issue worldwide, and chronic stressors, which are a problem for modern society, cause neuroendocrine changes with alterations in food intake. Obesity and chronic stress are associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. In this study, a rat model was used to evaluate the effects of a hypercaloric diet plus chronic restraint stress on the serum leptin and lipids levels and on the weight of specific adipose tissue (mesenteric, MAT; subcutaneous, SAT and visceral, VAT). Wistar rats were divided into the following 4 groups: standard chow (C), hypercaloric diet (HD), stress plus standard chow (S), and stress plus hypercaloric diet (SHD). The animals in the stress groups were subjected to chronic stress (placed inside a 25 cm × 7 cm plastic tube for 1h per day, 5 days per week for 6 weeks). The following parameters were evaluated: the weight of the liver, adrenal glands and specific adipose tissue; the delta weight; the Lee index; and the serum levels of leptin, corticosterone, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. The hypercaloric diet induced obesity in rats, increasing the Lee index, weight, leptin, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels. The stress decreased weight gain even in animals fed a hypercaloric diet but did not prevent a significant increase in the Lee index. However, an interaction between the independent factors (hypercaloric diet and stress) was observed, which is demonstrated by the increased serum leptin levels in the animals exposed to both protocols.

Abstract
We describe the isolation and molecular characterization of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCNS) from the nasal flora of healthy humans from three institutions located in Rio de Janeiro City. Swabs were obtained from the nares of students attending a non-residential public school and adults from two military quarters. Isolates of staphylococci were tested for the presence of the mecA gene by hybridization with a specific probe. S. epidermidis was the most frequent MRCNS (38 of the total 45 CNS isolated). Twenty-five percent of nasal staphylococcal carriers studied were colonized with MRCNS. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of SmaI-digested genomic DNA was carried out to study the clonality of the methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) isolates. In addition to cross-colonization among individuals belonging to the same institution, familial cross-colonization appeared to contribute to the spread of the methicillin-resistant isolates among two inter-communicable institutions. Indeed, the wide genomic diversity among the MRSE flora suggests that the spread of the mecA gene among these isolates might also have occurred via horizontal transmission. Despite the limited number of institutions analysed, it is reasonable to conclude that our data do not represent a situation unique to the three organizations but may reflect other communities in Rio with respect to transmission of MRCNS.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of T3 on amino acid accumulation and on the membrane potential of Sertoli cells of immature rat testes. Testes of pre-pubertal and pubertal rats were pre-incubated (30 min) in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer and incubated in the presence of [14C]methylaminoisobutyric acid with and without T3 for 15, 45 and 60 min. The hormone (10(-6) M and 10(-7) M) significantly stimulated amino acid accumulation in 6 and 13-day old rat testes but did not have any effect in neonatal and pubertal animals. T3 produced a dose-dependent hyperpolarizing effect at concentrations of 10(-6) M, 10(-5) M, 2 x 10(-5) M and 10(-4) M. We conclude that T3 induces a membrane hyperpolarization in Sertoli cells and stimulates amino acid accumulation in immature rat testes, demonstrating that the hormone has a rapid plasma membrane action.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The anatomy of the anal canal, the anorectal junction and the lower rectum was studied with 3-D ultrasound. METHOD Seventeen women with normal bowel transit, without rectocele (group 1) and 17 female patients with a large anterior rectocele (group 2) were examined with a B&K Medical Rawk. Mean age was 44.5 and 51.6 years respectively. In group 1, one (5.8%) patient was nuliparous, five (29.4%) had a caesarian section, 11 (64.7%) had a vaginal delivery while in group 2, two (11.7%) patients were nuliparous, four (23.5%) had a caesarian section and 11 (64.7%) had a vaginal delivery. Images were reconstructed in midline longitudinal (ML) and transverse (T) planes. The external (EAS) and internal (IAS) anal sphincters were measured in both projections. RESULTS In the ML plane, the EAS length was longer in group 1 (1.94 cm vs 1.61 cm, P < 0.05), the gap length was shorter (1.54 cm vs 1.0 cm P < 0.01) and the wall thickness was shorter in group 2 (0.40 cm vs 0.50 cm P < 0.01). The IAS (0.18 cm vs 0.23 cm P < 0.01) and EAS thickness (0.68 cm vs 0.77 cm, P < 0.05) (left lateral of the posterior quadrant) was greater in group 2. In group 1, the anterior upper anal canal wall in normal females was an extension of the rectal wall and the circular muscle was thicker in the mid-anal canal to form the IAS. In group 2, however, the wall layers were not identified and the IAS was found to be more distal. The differences were not statistically significant in the anal canal resting and squeeze pressures in the two groups. CONCLUSION Obstetric trauma does not seem to play any role in rectocele pathogenesis because the anal sphincter muscles are anatomically and functionally normal and rectocele is also present in nuliparous and in women with caesarian sections. It seems that it is associated with the absence of EAS and thinner IAS in the anterior upper anal canal. Herniation starts at the upper anal canal extending to the lower rectum in high or large rectoceles and maybe produced by rectal intussusception because of excessive and prolonged straining during defecation. In fact, the denomination 'rectocele' should be changed to 'anorectocele'.

Abstract
Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultures exposed to 110 mT and 220 mT steady magnetic fields (SMF) were studied to observe eventual induced growth alterations and changes in metabolic activity. Cell mass (biomass) growth was evaluated by light spectrometry, and metabolic alterations were estimated on the basis of the CO2 pressure produced and by the culture media pH changes, measured at the beginning and the end of the observation. The yeast strain DAUFPE-1012, cultivated in a nonaerated liquid agar Sabouraud glucose medium, was exposed to SMF generated by NdFeBr magnets. Results showed alterations induced by 220 mT SMF as an increment in cell proliferation (1.84%) and an increased CO2 production (36.1%) as compared to control groups. Furthermore, the initial-to-final pH difference in 220 mT SMF exposed cultures was higher than the 110 mT SMF and the control values. The whole acidification and the rise in CO2 production observed after 220 mT SMF exposure did not correspond to the biomass growth values, as compared to the other cultures, and was apparently provoked by a enhancement in the cellular metabolic rate. This technique becomes very promising for future biotechnological applications in fermentative processes.

Abstract
In utero exposure of rats to low dosages of diazepam (1.0-2.0 mg/kg) has been found to result in depression of the cellular and humoral immune responses during adulthood. Behavioral dysfunctions were also reported in infants from mothers with high benzodiazepine (BDZ) intake during pregnancy. The present experiment was undertaken to reconsider the potential action of diazepam during ontogeny in order to obtain further information about developmental processes using a refined methodology. Time-pregnant rats were treated subcutaneously with diazepam (2.0 mg/kg/day,: group E1) or with diazepam vehicle (group C1) from gestational day 14 to 20. Other dams (group E2) received the same BDZ dose from the 1st to the 21st day of lactation (weaning) or were not treated, remaining undisturbed in their home cages (group C2). The following results were obtained for animals perinatally treated with diazepam compared to groups C1 and C2: 1--increased time for testis descent and decreased time for vaginal opening (group E2); 2--no changes in the dates for ear end eye opening, or incisor tooth eruption (groups E1 and E2); 3--increased locomotor activity in the open-field (group E2) and/or in the plus maze (groups E1 and E2); 4--decreased levels of anxiety measured in the plus maze (groups E1 and E2); 5--decreased macrophage spreading and phagocytosis (groups E1 and E2). These results, which occurred in the absence of overt signs of maternal or fetal toxicity, demonstrate developmental, neuro- and immunotoxic effects of perinatal diazepam treatment in rats.

Abstract
A progressive, deteriorating neurologic disorder developed in a 28-year-old white man 10 years after he successfully received a living related donor kidney transplant. An extensive neurologic evaluation was unrevealing, including normal results of computed tomographic scanning of the brain with and without contrast medium. Repeated computed tomographic scanning after a double dose of radiocontrast medium in conjunction with delayed imaging revealed multiple areas of abnormal enhancement. This technique helped to direct brain biopsy, which led to the early diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and the institution of specific therapy.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been established as an important etiological factor for the development of cervical cancer. This DNA virus primarily infects the epithelium and can induce benign and malignant lesions of the mucous membranes and skin. Some HPVs are considered high risk due to their role in malignant progression of cervical tumors. Genital HPV infections are common and usually transient among young sexually active women. Only a small fraction of infected women develop cervical cancer, implying the involvement of environmental and genetic cofactors in cervical carcinogenesis. Classification, virology, pathology, natural history, epidemiological features of genital HPV infection, and future prospects for cervical cancer prevention with HPV vaccines will be reviewed here.

Abstract
We present a new surgical stapling technique for treatment of rectocele when associated with internal mucosal prolapse or haemorrhoids using only one circular mechanical stapler. Eight female patients, mean age 53 years (range, 42-70), complaining of obstructed defecation with vaginal digitation because of rectocele associated with internal mucosal prolapse underwent transanal repair of rectocele and rectal mucosectomy using one circular stapler between April and July 2004. A running horizontal mattress suture was placed through the base of the rectocele including mucosa, submucosa and the muscle layer of the whole anterior anorectal junction wall. The prolapsed mucosa and the muscular layer were then excised with an electrical scapel. A continuous pursestring rectal mucosa suture was placed 0.5 cm before the previous anterior mucosa and muscle layers resected wound, including the anorectal junction wall which was kept separate from the posterior vaginal wall by a Babcock forceps. Posteriorly, the pursestring suture included only mucosal and submucosal layers. The stapled suture was positioned between normal anterior rectal wall and the anal canal, 0.5 cm above the pectinate line. The stapler was then closed, fired and withdrawn. One patient complained of a perianal hematoma on the seventh postoperative day, requiring surgical excision. Postoperative defecography showed correction of the rectocele and outlet obstruction disappeared in all patients. This novel combined manual-stapled technique for rectocele and rectal internal mucosal prolapse seems to be a safe procedure and the preliminary results are encouraging. Further investigations have to be performed to assess long-term outcome in a larger number of patients.

Abstract
Electrophysiological studies were carried out using seminiferous tubules of "Sertoli cell enriched testes" of rats irradiated in utero. Sertoli cells were inserted with glass microelectrodes in a superfusion chamber continuously perfused with KRb buffer. The topical application of FSH (4.0 mU/ml) produced a biphasic effect characterized by a rapid hyperpolarization (less than 3 s) followed by depolarization. The depolarizing effect of FSH was prolonged and potentiated in the presence of 5 mmol/l alpha-methylamino-isobutyric acid in the bath medium of the superfusion chamber. Verapamil, at a dose (250 mumol/l) that nullified the stimulatory action of FSH in the amino acid transport, suppressed the depolarizing effect of FSH. It was concluded that in immature rat testes FSH produces electrophysiological changes that mediate the stimulatory action of the amino acid transport.

Abstract
Testes of 15-day-old rats preincubated and incubated during different times with various doses of FSH (0.2; 2.0 and 20.0 mU/ml) in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate (KRb) buffer increase the uptake of [14C] methylaminoisobutyric acid and [14C] aminoisobutyric acid. The basal and FSH stimulated amino acid transport occurs at absolute lower levels when the protein or glycoprotein synthesis is inhibited by cycloheximide (350 mumol/l) or tunicamycin (12 mumol/l) or when the microtubules are depolymerized with colchicine (1.2 mumol/l). However, the proportional increase of amino acid transport produced by FSH was maintained. The blockage of the voltage-dependent Ca++ channels with verapamil or the competitive inhibition of the bivalent ion channels by Co++ or Ni++ nullified the stimulatory action of FSH on the amino acid transport. Also quinine, that blocks the ATP dependent K+ channels, abolished the FSH action. It was concluded that in immature rat testes FSH stimulates amino acid transport through a mechanism involving voltage-dependent Ca++ channels and ATP-sensitive K+ channel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the role of Interleukin-6, IL-10 and their epidemiological association in women with persistence of DNA-HPV. DESIGN AND METHODS A nested case-control study within a longitudinal cohort study. Cervical specimens and blood samples were collected at enrolment from asymptomatic women who looked for a service of public health in a district of Porto Alegre, Brazil. A logistic regression analysis was performed with 95% confidence intervals. The outcome was the persistence of DNA-HPV infection. RESULTS The analysis showed that the age of the first intercourse below 20 years old (OR = 19.65, IC 95% 2.43-68.85), four or more sexual partners during lifetime (OR = 5.67, IC 95% 1.28-24.99), women with a previous altered Pap smear (OR = 10.17, IC 95% 1.80-57.33), marital status (OR = 12.94, IC 95% 2.43-68.85) and IL6 ≤ 3.106 pg/ml were associated with persistence of HPV infection. IL-10 were not associated with the HPV persistence. CONCLUSION The present study suggests that IL-6 levels may be a marker of HPV DNA persistence, although further investigation is necessary.

Abstract
The use of adsorption columns packed with ion-exchange resins for recovering, concentrating and purifying proteins is now widespread. The present work consists of a study on the dynamic behavior of adsorption columns that uses two kinds of adsorbents: a cationic and an anionic resin. A frontal analysis of the columns was performed with experimental data obtained from Fructozyme, a mixture of inulinase enzymes. The parameters of a Langmuir type of isotherm and adsorption kinetics were obtained from experimental tests in a batch system. A numerical technique based on orthogonal collocation and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was coupled with a nonlinear optimization method to predict the coefficients of the rate equations, which are fundamental for scale-up purposes.

Abstract
Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Euseius alatus De Leon (Acari: Phytoseiidae) are predatory mites that are mostly found on leaves and on the exposed fruit surface of coconut plants. Their morphology hampers the access to the microhabitat occupied by Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae), the most important pest of coconut fruits throughout the world. However, it was suggested that they can prey on A. guerreronis under natural conditions when this pest leaves its refuge to disperse. Since the trophic interactions between A. largoensis or E. alatus and A. guerreronis are unknown, we compare the frequencies of occurrence of A. largoensis and E. alatus under the bracts of coconut fruits and on coconut leaflets. In addition, because phytoseiids feed by liquid ingestion, we used molecular analysis to confirm the potential role of A. largoensis or E. alatus as predators of A. guerreronis and to assess how fast the A. guerreronis DNA fragment is degradated in the A. largoensis digestive tract. Our study demonstrated that E. alatus was only present on coconut leaflets whereas A. largoensis was found mostly on leaflets and, to a much lesser extent, under the bracts of coconuts. Species-specific ITS primers designed for A. guerreronis were shown to have a high degree of specificity for A. guerreronis DNA and did not produce any PCR product from DNA templates of the other insects and mites associated with the coconut agroecosystem. Based on molecular analysis, we confirmed that the predatory mites, A. largoensis and E. alatus, had preyed on the coconut mite in the field. Overall the predatory mites collected in the field exhibited low levels of predation (26.7% of A. largoensis and 8.9% of E. alatus tested positive for A. guerreronis DNA). The fragment of A. guerreronis DNA remained intact for a very short time (no more than 6 h after feeding) in the digestive tract of A. largoensis.

Abstract
Background Endometriosis is a clinical condition associated with genetic, endocrine, and immunological factors, present in 6 to 10% of women of reproductive age. Currently, the human microbiota has been studied and associated with the evolution of diseases due to its influence on pathogenesis, indicating that changes in the colonization of microorganisms in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems can promote physiological changes that can trigger inflammatory and immunological processes and hormonal dysregulation, which can be linked to endometriosis. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated microbiota changes in women with endometriosis. Methods The following electronic databases were searched up to April 2022: Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and gray literature (Google Scholar), using the keywords "dysbiosis", "microbiome" and "endometriosis", combined with their synonyms. The observational studies conducted with women diagnosed with endometriosis and women without endometriosis as controls were included. For the analyses, a standard mean difference with a 95% confidence interval was used using RevMan software (version 5.4), and for methodological quality assessment, the Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used. Results A total of 16 studies were found in the literature assessing the composition of the microbiota in women with endometriosis, and no significant difference were found for changes in alpha diversity analysis in gut microbiota (SMD = -0.28; 95% CI = -0.70 to 0.14; P = 0.19; I2 = 52%; four studies, 357 participants) or vaginal microbiota (SMD = -0.68; 95% CI = -1.72 to 0.35; P = 0.19; I2 = 66%; two studies, 49 participants). Conclusion In intestinal and vaginal samples from women with endometriosis, alpha-diversity did not present a significant difference when compared to the control population. However, each study individually showed a possible relationship between the female microbiota and endometriosis. This trial is registered with CRD42021260972.

Abstract
The Gravataí River basin, one of the main water sources of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, is among the ten most polluted rivers in Brazil. Water quality is monitored only through physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in Brazil, and in this context, considering the importance of the use of biomarkers in complementing the analysis of water, the present study aimed to evaluate the environmental quality of the main affluent of the Gravataí River, Demetrio stream, through physico-chemical, microbiological, and cytogenotoxic criteria, at the stream source (P1), whereas samples P2 and P3 were obtained from the upstream near the area with the highest urban density and the downstream near the meeting point with the Gravataí River, respectively. The results for copper concentration and color classified the Demetrio stream as Class 4 in general, that is, the water is suitable only for navigation and to landscape harmony. The main genotoxic alterations (micronuclei and nuclear buds) were observed in P2, in which were obtained the highest levels of copper, in addition to iron and manganese. Anthropic interventions were observed in P1 and P2; however, due to its low metal concentration, P3, near the Gravataí River, manifested an improvement in environmental quality.

Abstract
Glomus tumors originate from paranglionic tissues. In head and neck, these lesions are mainly found near carotid bifurcation, X nerve, jugular bulb or middle ear. These tumors have a low growing rate and are hypervascularized. Their histology show "nonchromaffin" cells and vascular structures involved by a fibrous matrix. MRI, CT and angiography are imaging methods used in glomus tumor. The author describe four cases of jugulo-timpanic glomus tumors studied by MRI, showing their main findings and the value of this method to detection of these lesions.
