Real-space imaging of confined magnetic skyrmion tubes

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically nontrivial particles with a potential application as information elements in future spintronic device architectures. While they are commonly portrayed as two dimensional objects, in reality magnetic skyrmions are thought to exist as elongated, tube-like objects extending through the thickness of the host material. The study of this skyrmion tube state (SkT) is vital for furthering the understanding of skyrmion formation and dynamics for future applications. However, direct experimental imaging of skyrmion tubes has yet to be reported. Here, we demonstrate the real-space observation of skyrmion tubes in a lamella of FeGe using resonant magnetic x-ray imaging and comparative micromagnetic simulations, confirming their extended structure. The formation of these structures at the edge of the sample highlights the importance of confinement and edge effects in the stabilisation of the SkT state, opening the door to further investigation into this unexplored dimension of the skyrmion spin texture.

Dynamic susceptibility of concentric permalloy rings with opposite chirality vortices

The high frequency dynamic behaviour of concentric permalloy nanorings with vortex domain structures with a thickness of 20 nm, a width in the range of 100 nm-250 nm, and a separation in the range of 10 nm-600 nm is investigated by micromagnetic simulations. The aim is to explore the ferromagnetic resonance of the concentric ring structure as a function of geometric parameters of the system. The dynamic susceptibility spectrum and spatial localization of the ferromagnetic resonance mode are investigated for varying ring widths and separations. The frequency of oscillation is significantly impacted by the presence of the magnetostatic interaction between each ring and can be modulated by a variation in the ring width and separation. The spatial localization of the uniform mode is found to vary as a function of ring separation, which corresponds to a large variation in amplitude of the real and imaginary components of the dynamic susceptibility.

Motion and mixing for multiple ferromagnetic microswimmers

This paper concerns the interaction of several ferromagnetic microswimmers, their motion and the resulting fluid mixing. Each swimmer consists of two ferromagnetic beads joined by an elastic link, and is driven by an external, time-dependent magnetic field. The external field provides a torque on a swimmer and, together with the varying attraction between the magnetic beads, generates a time-irreversible motion leading to persistent swimming in a low Reynolds number environment. The aim of the present paper is to consider the interactions between several swimmers. A regime is considered in which identical swimmers move in the same overall direction, and their motion is synchronised because of driving by the external field. It is found that two swimmers tend to encircle one another while three undergo more complicated motion that may involve the braiding of swimmer trajectories. By means of approximations it is established that the interaction between pairs of swimmers gives circulatory motion which falls off with an inverse square law and is linked to their overall speed of motion through the fluid. As groups of two or more swimmers move through the fluid they process fluid, leaving behind a trail of fluid that has undergone mixing: this is investigated by following streak lines numerically.

Muons as local probes of three-body correlations in the mixed state of type-II superconductors

The vortex glass state formed by magnetic flux lines in a type-II superconductor is shown to possess nontrivial three-body correlations. While such correlations are usually difficult to measure in glassy systems, the magnetic fields associated with the flux vortices allow us to probe these via muon-spin rotation measurements of the local field distribution. We show via numerical simulations and analytic calculations that these observations provide detailed microscopic insight into the local order of the vortex glass and more generally validate a theoretical framework for correlations in glassy systems.

Direct observation of the flux-line vortex glass phase in a type II superconductor

The order of the vortex state in La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 is probed using muon-spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transition from a Bragg glass to a vortex glass is observed, where the latter is composed of disordered vortex lines. In the vicinity of the transition the microscopic behavior reflects a delicate interplay of thermally induced and pinning-induced disorder.
