Robustification of the state-space MRAC law for under-actuated systems via fuzzy-immunological computations

This paper formulates an enhanced Model-Reference-Adaptive-Controller (MRAC) that is augmented with a fuzzy-immune adaptive regulator to strengthen the disturbance-attenuation capability of closed-loop under-actuated systems. The proposed scheme employs the conventional state-space MRAC and augments it with a pre-configured fuzzy-immune mechanism that acts as a superior regulator to dynamically modulate the adaptation gains of the Lyapunov gain-adjustment law. The immunological computations increase the controller's adaptability to flexibly manipulate the damping control effort under exogenous disturbances. The efficacy of the proposed Immune-MRAC law is comparatively analyzed under practical disturbance conditions by conducting real-time hardware experiments on the QNET rotary pendulum. The experimental outcomes validate the faster transient-recovery behavior and stronger damping effort of the proposed control law against the exogenous disturbances while preserving the system's asymptotic stability and control energy efficiency.

aXonica: A support package for MRI based Neuroimaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) assists in studying the nervous system. MRI scans undergo significant processing before presenting the final images to medical practitioners. These processes are executed with ease due to excellent software pipelines. However, establishing software workstations is non-trivial and requires researchers in life sciences to be comfortable in downloading, installing, and scripting software that is non-user-friendly and may lack basic GUI. As researchers struggle with these skills, there is a dire need to develop software packages that can automatically install software pipelines speeding up building software workstations and laboratories. Previous solutions include NeuroDebian, BIDS Apps, Flywheel, QMENTA, Boutiques, Brainlife and Neurodesk. Overall, all these solutions complement each other. NeuroDebian covers neuroscience and has a wider scope, providing only 51 tools for MRI. Whereas, BIDS Apps is committed to the BIDS format, covering only 45 software related to MRI. Boutiques is more flexible, facilitating its pipelines to be easily installed as separate containers, validated, published, and executed. Whereas, both Flywheel and Qmenta are propriety, leaving four for users looking for 'free for use' tools, i.e., NeuroDebian, Brainlife, Neurodesk, and BIDS Apps. This paper presents an extensive survey of 317 tools published in MRI-based neuroimaging in the last ten years, along with 'aXonica,' an MRI-based neuroimaging support package that is unbiased towards any formatting standards and provides 130 applications, more than that of NeuroDebian (51), BIDS App (45), Flywheel (70), and Neurodesk (85). Using a technology stack that employs GUI as the front-end and shell scripted back-end, aXonica provides (i) 130 tools that span the entire MRI-based neuroimaging analysis, and allow the user to (ii) select the software of their choice, (iii) automatically resolve individual dependencies and (iv) installs them. Hence, aXonica can serve as an important resource for researchers and teachers working in the field of MRI-based Neuroimaging to (a) develop software workstations, and/or (b) install newer tools in their existing workstations.

Unearthing Insights into Metabolic Syndrome by Linking Drugs, Targets, and Gene Expressions Using Similarity Measures and Graph Theory

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of metabolic disorders that includes obesity in combination with at least any two of the following conditions, i.e., insulin resistance, high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides level. Treatment of this syndrome is challenging because of the multiple interlinked factors that lead to increased risks of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to conduct extensive in silico analysis to (i) find central genes that play a pivotal role in MetS and (ii) propose suitable drugs for therapy. Our objective is to first create a drug-disease network and then identify novel genes in the drug-disease network with strong associations to drug targets, which can help in increasing the therapeutical effects of different drugs. In the future, these novel genes can be used to calculate drug synergy and propose new drugs for the effective treatment of MetS.

METHODS

For this purpose, we (i) investigated associated drugs and pathways for MetS, (ii) employed eight different similarity measures to construct eight gene regulatory networks, (iii) chose an optimal network, where a maximum number of drug targets were central, (iv) determined central genes exhibiting strong associations with these drug targets and associated disease-causing pathways, and lastly (v) employed these candidate genes to propose suitable drugs.

RESULTS

Our results indicated (i) a novel drug-disease network complex, with (ii) novel genes associated with MetS.

CONCLUSION

Our developed drug-disease network complex closely represents MetS with associated novel findings and markers for an improved understanding of the disease and suggested therapy.
