Abstract
We report that Bi₂Se₃ thin films can be epitaxially grown on SrTiO₃ substrates, which allow for very large tunablity in carrier density with a back gate. The observed low field magnetoconductivity due to weak antilocalization (WAL) has a very weak gate-voltage dependence unless the electron density is reduced to very low values. Such a transition in WAL is correlated with unusual changes in longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Our results suggest a much suppressed bulk conductivity at large negative gate voltages and a possible role of surface states in the WAL phenomena.

Abstract
An Arabidopsis protein was found to interact specifically with the capsid protein (CP) of turnip crinkle virus (TCV) through yeast two-hybrid screening. This protein, designated TIP (for TCV-interacting protein), was found to be a member of the recently recognized NAC family of proteins. NAC proteins have been implicated in the regulation of development of plant embryos and flowers. TIP alone was able to activate expression of reporter genes in yeast if fused to a DNA binding domain, suggesting that it may be a transcriptional activator. The TIP binding region in the TCV CP has been mapped to the N-terminal 25 amino acids. Site-directed mutagenesis within this region revealed that loss of the TIP-CP interaction in the yeast two-hybrid assay correlated with loss of the ability of TCV to induce the hypersensitive response and resistance in the TCV-resistant Arabidopsis ecotype Dijon (Di-0 and its inbred line Di-17). These data suggest that TIP is an essential component in the TCV resistance response pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diarrhea associated with rotavirus and Escherichia coli is one of the major gastrointestinal problems faced by human infants. Using a piglet model, the authors investigated the protective effectiveness of probiotic feeding against naturally acquired diarrhea in weanlings. METHODS Seventeen piglets were allocated into two groups balanced for live weight and litter of origin. The test group was administered Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 (109 colony-forming units (cfu)/piglet/d) orally until the end of the experiment; the control group did not receive probiotic treatment. After 1 week, animals were penned individually and weaned onto a diet for a weaner. The degree of subsequent diarrheal disease was monitored in both groups of animals, feed intake and live weight gain of the piglets were assessed, and blood and fecal samples were collected to measure concurrent systemic and gastrointestinal tract immunologic activity. RESULTS Compared with the controls, piglets that received B. lactis HN019 had a lower severity of weanling diarrhea and maintained a greater feed conversion efficiency during weaning. The protective effect of probiotic feeding was associated with lower concentrations of fecal rotavirus and E. coli, higher blood leukocyte phagocytic and T-lymphocyte proliferative responses, and higher gastrointestinal tract pathogen-specific antibody titers. CONCLUSIONS These results show that dietary treatment using B. lactis HN019 can reduce the severity of weanling diarrhea associated with rotavirus and E. coli, possibly via a mechanism of enhanced immune-mediated protection. This study suggests that probiotic treatment may be an effective dietary means of preventing or limiting diarrhea in human infants.

Abstract
A protoplast infection assay has been used to reliably examine the viral RNA encapsidation of turnip crinkle virus (TCV). Analysis of the encapsidation of various mutant viral RNAs revealed that a 186-nucleotide (nt) region at the 3' end of the coat protein (CP) gene, with a bulged hairpin loop of 28 nt as its most essential element, was indispensable for TCV RNA encapsidation. When RNA fragments containing the 186-nt region were used to replace the CP gene of a different virus, tomato bushy stunt virus, the resulting chimeric viral RNAs were encapsidated into TCV virions. Furthermore, analysis of the encapsidated chimeric RNA species established that the RNA size was an important determinant of the TCV assembly process.

Abstract
Supported gold catalysts have drawn worldwide interest due to the novel properties and potential applications in industries. However, the origin of the catalytic activity in gold nanoparticles is still not well understood. In this study, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) has been applied to investigate the nature of gold in Au (1.3 wt %)/gamma-Al2O3 and Au (2.8 wt %)/TiO2 catalysts prepared by the deposition-precipitation method. The SIMS spectrum of the supported gold catalysts presented AuO-, AuO2-, and AuOH- ion clusters. These measurements show direct evidence for oxidized gold on supported gold catalysts and may be helpful to gaining better understanding of the origin of the catalytic activity.

Abstract
Previous studies on turnip crinkle virus (TCV) have suggested that the two small, centrally located ORFs, conserved in all Carmoviruses, are both required for cell-to-cell movement (Hacker et al., 1992). We now demonstrate that the cell-to-cell movement of TCV is mediated by in trans complementation of the two proteins. First, both of the putative movement proteins (MPs p8 and p9) were shown to be translated in vitro from transcripts representing the 1.7-kb subgenomic RNA. Western blot analysis, using antisera prepared against GST fusion proteins of both genes, was then used to show that the p8 but not the p9 protein accumulated to detectable levels in particulate fractions of infected cells. Cell-to-cell movement of various MP mutants in Arabidopsis was evaluated by in situ hybridization of inoculated leaves. Changes in either of the two MP genes resulted in failure of the mutants to move cell-to-cell. Coat protein was found to be unnecessary for cell-to-cell movement. Complementation of cell-to-cell movement by co-inoculating p8-defective mutants with a p9-defective mutant resulted in delayed systemic infection. In contrast, efficient cell-to-cell movement was achieved when the MP mutants were inoculated into transgenic plants expressing the corresponding functional gene(s). These experiments provide further evidence that both MP genes encoded by Carmoviruses must function in trans in the same cell in order to mediate cell-to-cell movement.

Abstract
Topological superconductivity is an exotic state of matter that supports Majorana zero-modes, which have been predicted to occur in the surface states of three-dimensional systems, in the edge states of two-dimensional systems, and in one-dimensional wires. Localized Majorana zero-modes obey non-Abelian exchange statistics, making them interesting building blocks for topological quantum computing. Here, we report superconductivity induced in the edge modes of semiconducting InAs/GaSb quantum wells, a two-dimensional topological insulator. Using superconducting quantum interference we demonstrate gate-tuning between edge-dominated and bulk-dominated regimes of superconducting transport. The edge-dominated regime arises only under conditions of high-bulk resistivity, which we associate with the two-dimensional topological phase. These experiments establish InAs/GaSb as a promising platform for the confinement of Majoranas into localized states, enabling future investigations of non-Abelian statistics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are almost three times more likely to be obese than those without PCOS. However, we have no specific interventions to induce weight loss so far and rely on drugs used to treat other symptoms of the syndrome or obesity in the general population. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of metformin, inositol, liraglutide and orlistat to induce weight loss in women with PCOS and overweight/obesity. METHODS A search was conducted using the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed and CENTRAL databases. Individually randomized, parallel group trials that evaluated the effects of these pharmacological treatments among adults or adolescents with PCOS and overweight/obesity, compared with a placebo or metformin group, were considered eligible. Registration number: PROSPERO CRD 42017076625. RESULTS Twenty-three trials reporting on 941 women were included in the network meta-analysis. The amount of weight lost differed significantly among the drugs (in descending order): liraglutide, orlistat and metformin. Liraglutide alone, liraglutide/metformin and metformin alone significantly reduced waist circumference, but no change was found with orlistat. Data for waist-to-hip ratio were only available for metformin, which had no significant effect. CONCLUSION Liraglutide appears superior to the other drugs in reducing weight and waist circumference.

Abstract
The presence of translational control elements and cap structures has not been carefully investigated for members of the Carmovirus genus, a group of small icosahedral plant viruses with positive-sense RNA genomes. In this study, we examined both the 5' and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of the turnip crinkle carmovirus (TCV) genomic RNA (4 kb) as well as the 5' UTR of the coat protein subgenomic RNA (1.45 kb) for their roles in translational regulation. All three UTRs enhanced translation of the firefly luciferase reporter gene to different extents. Optimal translational efficiency was achieved when mRNAs contained both 5' and 3' UTRs. The synergistic effect due to the 5'-3' cooperation was at least fourfold greater than the sum of the contributions of the individual UTRs. The observed translational enhancement of TCV mRNAs occurred in a cap-independent manner, a result consistent with the demonstration, using a cap-specific antibody, that the 5' end of the TCV genomic RNA was uncapped. Finally, the translational enhancement activity within the 5' UTR of 1.45-kb subgenomic RNA was shown to be important for the translation of coat protein in protoplasts and for virulent infection in Arabidopsis plants.

Abstract
From site-directed mutagenesis of potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) it had been concluded earlier that the formation of a thermodynamically metastable structure containing hairpin II (HP II) is critical for infectivity. In order to differentiate between structural and sequence effects, in the present work base pairs in HP II were exchanged by site-directed double mutations without significant alterations in the native rod-like structure of PSTVd. The mutants were viable and genetically stable in the first generation, but one of the two mutations reverted to the wild-type nucleotide in the second generation. Single-site mutations in the stem of HP II, which had been described as revertants to the wild-type sequence earlier, were analysed with respect to the time course of reversion and the sequence variation during reversion. All replicating sequence variants were separated by gel electrophoretic techniques and the sequences and their relative frequencies were determined. From both types of studies it can be concluded (i) that HP II is a functional element in the (-)strand replication intermediate, generated due to sequential folding during synthesis, and that it is essential for template activity of (+)strand synthesis; (ii) that G:U pairs are tolerated transiently in (-)strand HP II; the lower stability of such a HP II is compensated by additional mutations outside HP II which suppress the competition of a rod-like structure; and (iii) that the reversions are generated spontaneously during (-)strand synthesis. Furthermore, the double-stranded structure of HP II is the essential element for short term replication of PSTVd but the exact sequence of the wild-type proves to be superior with regard to fitness and replicability of PSTVd.

Abstract
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M = W, Mo, Nb, and X = Te, Se, S) with strong spin-orbit coupling possess plenty of novel physics including superconductivity. Due to the Ising spin-orbit coupling, monolayer NbSe2 and gated MoS2 of 2H structure can realize the Ising superconductivity, which manifests itself with in-plane upper critical field far exceeding Pauli paramagnetic limit. Surprisingly, we find that a few-layer 1Td structure MoTe2 also exhibits an in-plane upper critical field which goes beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Importantly, the in-plane upper critical field shows an emergent two-fold symmetry which is different from the isotropic in-plane upper critical field in 2H transition metal dichalcogenides. We show that this is a result of an asymmetric spin-orbit coupling in 1Td transition metal dichalcogenides. Our work provides transport evidence of a new type of asymmetric spin-orbit coupling in transition metal dichalcogenides which may give rise to novel superconducting and spin transport properties.

Abstract
After the unexpected appearance of lethal symptoms on tomato plants infected with the PSTVd strain Intermediate Di, viroids were isolated and sequenced. It was found that a new strain, named RG 1, had been generated spontaneously in our greenhouse. In a different series of plant passages two new strains, named QF A and QF B, were detected which coexisted with the wild-type strain Di. Strains QF A and QF B showed intermediate symptoms when inoculated separately. In order to confirm the working hypothesis that the more pathogenic strain outcompetes the less pathogenic strain but strains of similar pathogenicity might coexist in the host, strains of different pathogenicity were mixed for inoculation in a ratio from 1:1 to 1:100 (more pathogenic:less pathogenic). The concentrations of the individual strains were determined 6 weeks postinfection with the method of nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and the working hypothesis was confirmed. The total concentrations of viroids in infected plants were very similar, irrespective of whether severe, intermediate, or mild strains or mixtures of different strains were present. The mutations in all new strains (3 in RG 1, 2 in QF A, 3 in QF B) were located in the so-called virulence-modulating region. The mutations of strain RG 1 influenced dramatically the thermodynamic stability of the native rod-like structure, as determined experimentally by temperature-gradient gel electrophoresis. Since during replication a multihairpin structure is generated transiently which is transformed afterwards into the rod-like structure, a lower thermodynamic stability of the rod-like structure leads to a higher accumulation of the transient structure. It is assumed that the transient structure, which is active in replication as shown earlier, is essential also in pathogenesis. This model explains the experimentally determined interdependence between pathogenicity and replicability of PSTVd strains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies indicate that the leukocyte telomere length is associated with the risk of cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the prognostic value of leukocyte telomere length in CRC patients has not been investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS Relative telomere length (RTL) of peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) from 571 CRC patients receiving surgical resection was measured using a polymerase chain reaction-based method. The Cox proportional hazards ratio model and the Kaplan-Meier curve were used to estimate the association between RTL and the clinical outcome of CRC patients in the training set (90 patients) and the testing set (86 patients). Finally, an independent cohort of 395 patients was used as an external validation set. The immunophenotype of PBLs and the plasma concentration of several immune-related cytokines were determined by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. RESULTS Patients with shorter RTL had significantly poorer overall survival and relapse-free survival than those with longer RTL in the training, testing and validation sets. Furthermore, leukocyte RTL and Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) stage exhibited a significant joint effect in the prognosis prediction of combined CRC patients, indicating that patients with both short RTL and advanced stages had the worst prognosis, when compared with other subgroups. In addition, patients with short RTL showed the higher percentage of CD4(+) T cell and the lower percentage of B cell in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, as well as the lower concentration of plasma transforming growth factor-β1, suggesting a possibility that the immune functions changed with RTL alteration. CONCLUSIONS Our study for the first time demonstrates that leukocyte RTL is an independent prognostic marker complementing TNM stage and associated with the immune functions in CRC patients.

Abstract
In this paper, the separation and determination of the sweetener aspartame by ion chromatography coupled with electrochemical amperometric detection is reported. Sodium saccharin, acesulfame-K and aspartame were separated using 27.5 mmol/l NaOH isocratic elution on a Dionex IonPac AS4A-SC separation column. Aspartame can be determined by integrated amperometric detection without interference from the other two sweeteners. The method can be applied to the determination of aspartame in powered tabletop, fruit juice and carbonated beverage samples, and the results obtained by integrated amperometry were in agreement with those obtained using a UV detection method. A method for determining analytes with an NH2 group by ion chromatography with integrated amperometry was developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although intracranial epidermoid cysts generally appear as hypodense lesions on CT scans, occasionally, they may appear hyperdense, making diagnosis difficult. The aim was to study clinical features and possible pathogenesis of hyperdense intracranial epidermoid cysts (HIECs). METHODS Fifteen patients with HIECs were surgically treated in our department during a 21-year period (1985 up to 2005). We reviewed each patient's clinical records, radiological findings, operative reports, and pathological examinations, along with a review of the literature. FINDINGS The incidence of HIECs in our series was approximately 3.02%, with female predominance. The average age was 32 years and the average duration of complaints was nine months. The most common location was the parasellar area (6 cases), followed by cerebellum (4 cases), clival region (3 cases), cerebello-pontine angle (1 case) and lateral ventricle (1 case). Gross-total excision of the tumor was achieved in ten patients (66.7%). Four (26.7%) patients underwent subtotal resection; and one (6.6%) patient underwent partial resection. Aseptic meningitis that occurred postoperatively in two cases was controlled by lumbar drainage. CONCLUSIONS Recurrent leakage of the irritating cyst contents and subsequent chemical inflammatory response may be responsible for the high-density on CT scans and the cystic nature. A correct histological diagnosis is important because, in contrast to typical ECs and other lesions, HIECs are more prone to spread intra-operatively and result in severe aseptic meningitis.

Abstract
To study the interface between a conventional superconductor and a topological insulator, we fabricated Pb-Bi(2)Te(3)-Pb lateral and sandwiched junctions, and performed electron transport measurements down to low temperatures. The results show that there is a strong superconducting proximity effect between Bi(2)Te(3) and Pb, as that a supercurrent can be established along the thickness direction of the Bi(2)Te(3) flakes (100~300 nm thick) at a temperature very close to the superconducting T(c) of Pb. Moreover, a Josephson current can be established over several microns in the lateral direction between two Pb electrodes on the Bi(2)Te(3 )surface. We have further demonstrated that superconducting quantum interference devices can be constructed based on the proximity-effect-induced superconductivity. The critical current of the devices exhibits s-wave-like interference and Fraunhofer diffraction patterns. With improved designs, Josephson devices of this type would provide a test-bed for exploring novel phenomena such as Majorana fermions in the future.

Abstract
A series of 1,3-dioxolanyluracil analogues was prepared from the dioxolane intermediates 2, and their anti-Epstein Barr virus (anti-EBV) activities were determined. The potency of L-dioxolane uracil nucleosides against EBV replication is dependent on the substituents at the 5-position in the following decreasing order: I > Br > Cl > CH3 > CF3 > F. The most active and selective analogue was the iodo derivative (L-I-OddU) with an EC50 value of 0.03 microM and an EC90 value of 0.16 microM. There was no cytotoxicity or depletion of mitochondrial DNA in cells after exposure to L-I-OddU at 50 microM. The action against EBV replication in H1 cells is time-dependent, and EBV DNA in cells treated with L-I-OddU could rebound to pretreatment levels once the drug was removed. In view of the potent antiviral activity plus favorable toxicity profiles, L-I-OddU may be potentially useful for the treatment of EBV-related infectious diseases as well as for delaying the onset or decreasing the incidence of EBV-associated cancers.

Abstract
Hepatic steatosis affects disease progression in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We investigated the plasma sphingolipid profile in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and whether there was an association between HCV-related steatosis and plasma sphingolipids. We used high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to analyze plasma sphingolipids in 120 interferon-naïve, non-diabetic, and non-obese CHC patients. Hepatic steatosis was defined as ≥5 % hepatocytes with fat based on histopathological analysis. Blood biochemical indicators and HCV load and genotype were also determined. Thirty-six (30.0 %) of 120 patients presented with hepatic steatosis Grades 1-3. Forty-four plasma sphingolipids were detected. Plasma sphingomyelin (SM) (d18:1/22:0) and ceramide (Cer) (d18:1/24:0)-1-P correlated with steatosis grade (r = 0.22, p = 0.015; r = -0.23, p = 0.012, respectively). SM (d18:1/22:0) [odds ratio (OR) = 1.12] and Cer (d18:1/24:0)-1-P (OR = 0.88) were independent factors for the presence of hepatic steatosis in CHC patients. The area under the curve (AUC) of SM (d18:1/22:0) and Cer (d18:1/24:0)-1-P was 0.637 and 0.638, respectively, to identify the presence of steatosis. Further analysis for genotype 2 CHC showed that only SM (d18:1/22:0) was independently linked to steatosis (OR = 1.21). The AUC of SM (d18:1/22:0) to identify hepatic steatosis in genotype 2 CHC was 0.726. Its sensitivity and negative predictive value reached 0.813 and 0.886, respectively. This study suggested that altered plasma SM (d18:1/22:0) was closely related to hepatic steatosis in chronic HCV infection, especially with genotype 2. Experimental studies are needed to determine further the underlying mechanisms responsible for these associations.

Abstract
Consecutively tailoring few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 from 2H to Td phase may realize the long-sought topological superconductivity in a single material system by incorporating superconductivity and the quantum spin Hall effect together. Here, this study demonstrates that a consecutive structural phase transition from Td to 1T' to 2H polytype can be realized by increasing the Se concentration in Se-substituted MoTe2 thin films. More importantly, the Se-substitution is found to dramatically enhance the superconductivity of the MoTe2 thin film, which is interpreted as the introduction of two-band superconductivity. The chemical-constituent-induced phase transition offers a new strategy to study the s+- superconductivity and the possible topological superconductivity, as well as to develop phase-sensitive devices based on MX2 materials.
