Abstract
BACKGROUND To test whether deficiency in endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) affects atherosclerosis development, we compared lesion formation in apolipoprotein E (apoE)/eNOS-double knockout (DKO) and apoE-knockout (KO) control animals. METHODS AND RESULTS After 16 weeks of "Western-type" diet, apoE/eNOS-DKO males and females showed significant increases in lesion area of 93.6% and 59.2% compared with apoE-KO mice. All apoE/eNOS-DKO animals studied developed peripheral coronary arteriosclerosis, associated with perivascular and myocardial fibrosis, whereas none of the apoE-KO mice did. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a significantly increased left ventricular wall thickness and decreased fractional shortening in DKO animals. Mean arterial pressure was increased in DKO mice and was comparable in degree to eNOS-KO animals. Male DKO animals developed atherosclerotic abdominal aneurysms and aortic dissection. CONCLUSIONS eNOS deficiency increases atherosclerosis in Western-type diet-fed apoE-KO animals and introduces coronary disease and an array of cardiovascular complications, including spontaneous aortic aneurysm and dissection. This phenotype constitutes the first murine model to demonstrate distal coronary arteriosclerosis associated with evidence of myocardial ischemia, infarction, and heart failure. Hypertrophy and reduced left ventricular function cannot be explained by increased blood pressure alone, because eNOS-KO animals do not develop these complications.

Abstract
Stem rust caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici was among the most devastating diseases of barley in the northern Great Plains of the U.S. and Canada before the deployment of the stem rust-resistance gene Rpg1 in 1942. Since then, Rpg1 has provided durable protection against stem rust losses in widely grown barley cultivars (cvs.). Extensive efforts to clone Rpg1 by synteny with rice provided excellent flanking markers but failed to yield the gene because it does not seem to exist in rice. Here we report the map-based cloning and characterization of Rpg1. A high-resolution genetic map constructed with 8,518 gametes and a 330-kb bacterial artificial chromosome contig physical map positioned the gene between two crossovers approximately 0.21 centimorgan and 110 kb apart. The region including Rpg1 was searched for potential candidate genes by sequencing low-copy probes. Two receptor kinase-like genes were identified. The candidate gene alleles were sequenced from resistant and susceptible cvs. Only one of the candidate genes showed a pattern of apparently functional gene structure in the resistant cvs. and defective gene structure in the susceptible cvs. identifying it as the Rpg1 gene. Rpg1 encodes a receptor kinase-like protein with two tandem protein kinase domains, a novel structure for a plant disease-resistance gene. Thus, it may represent a new class of plant resistance genes.

Abstract
Heavy metals have been increasingly released into our environment. We present here, for the first time, the global industrial age production of Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, and their potential accumulation and environmental effects in the pedosphere. World soils have been seriously polluted by Pb and Cd and slightly by Zn. The potential industrial age anthropogenic Pb, Hg, and Cd inputs in the pedosphere are 9.6, 6.1, and 5.2 times those in the lithosphere, respectively. The potential anthropogenic heavy metal inputs in the pedosphere increased tremendously after the 1950s, especially for Cr and Ni. In 2000, the cumulative industrial age anthropogenic global production of Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn was 1.1, 105, 451, 0.64, 36, 235, and 354 million tonnes, respectively. The global industrial age metal burdens per capita (in 2000) were 0.18, 17.3, 74.2, 0.10, 5.9, 38.6, and 58.2 kg for Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, respectively. Acidification may increase the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals in the pedosphere. The improvement of industrial processing technology reducing the metal dispersion rate, the recycling of metal-containing outdated products, by-products and wastes, and the development of new substitute materials for heavy metals are possible strategies to minimize the effects of heavy metals on our environment.

Abstract
G-quadruplexes are a family of secondary DNA structures formed in the presence of monovalent cations that consist of four-stranded structures in which Hoogsteen base-pairing stabilizes G-tetrad structures. These structures are proposed to exist in vivo, although direct confirmatory evidence is lacking. Guanine-rich regions of DNA capable of forming G-quadruplex structures are found in a variety of chromosomal regions, including telomeres and promoter regions of DNA. In this review, we describe the design of three separate groups of G-quadruplex-interactive compounds and their interaction with G-quadruplex DNA. Using the first group of compounds (anthraquinones), we describe experiments that provide the proof of concept that a G-quadruplex is required for inhibition of telomerase. Using the second group of compounds (perylenes), we describe the structure of a G-quadruplex-ligand complex and its effect on the dynamics of formation and enzymatic unwinding of the quadruplex. For the third group of compounds (porphyrins), we describe the experiments that relate the biological effects to their interactions with G-quadruplexes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is expressed by leukocytes and smooth muscle cells in atherosclerotic lesions. To test whether NO produced by iNOS deficiency affects atherosclerosis, we studied apoE/iNOS-double knockout (dKO) and apoE-knockout (KO) control animals fed a "Western-type" diet. METHODS AND RESULTS After 16 weeks of Western-type diet, the aortic lesion area in apoE/iNOS-dKO males and females was significantly reduced, by 22% and 21%, respectively, compared with apoE-KO males and females. This effect was more pronounced after 24 weeks of Western-type diet, after which lesion formation in male and female dKO mice was reduced by 38% and 40%, respectively. Plasma levels of lipoperoxides in apoE/iNOS-dKO mice (2.0+/-0.23 micromol/L) were significantly lower than in apoE-KO control animals (3.2+/-0.44 micromol/L; P=0.02). To test whether substrate deficiency plays a role in the proatherogenic actions of iNOS, we administered L-arginine to apoE-KO animals for 16 and 24 weeks. L-Arginine treatment did not affect lesion formation in apoE-KO animals fed a Western-type diet. CONCLUSIONS Genetic deficiency of iNOS decreases diet-induced atherosclerosis and lowers plasma levels of lipoperoxides, a marker for oxidative stress, in apoE-KO animals. Reduction in iNOS-mediated oxidative stress could partly explain protection from lesion formation in dKO animals. L-Arginine supplementation did not change lesion area in apoE-KO mice, indicating that substrate deficiency is not a likely cause for iNOS-mediated injury in this model of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
We present the first results of the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly a_{μ}≡(g_{μ}-2)/2. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency ω_{a} between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ω[over ˜]_{p}^{'} in a spherical water sample at 34.7 °C. The ratio ω_{a}/ω[over ˜]_{p}^{'}, together with known fundamental constants, determines a_{μ}(FNAL)=116 592 040(54)×10^{-11} (0.46 ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both μ^{+} and μ^{-}, the new experimental average of a_{μ}(Exp)=116 592 061(41)×10^{-11} (0.35 ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations.

Abstract
This study hypothesized that the gut microbial populations, intestinal morphology, and cytokine production are differentially altered in 2 different pig breeds, namely, Chinese native Jinhua pigs and European Landrace pigs, after orally challenge with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88. A total of 12 Jinhua pigs and 12 Landrace pigs were allocated to either the nonchallenged or the challenged groups (6 pigs per group). The challenged pigs were orally administered ETEC K88, and their nonchallenged counterparts were given sterile Luria-Bertani broth. Selected gut microbial populations, intestinal morphology, mRNA expression of tight junction proteins, and the levels of ileal cytokines and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) production were measured in Jinhua and Landrace pigs. The results showed that the challenged Jinhua pigs exhibited a significantly (P < 0.05) lower incidence of diarrhea compared with their Landrace counterparts. The Escherichia coli (E.coli) population and the percentage of E. coli in the total bacteria population were increased in response to ETEC K88 challenge in both Jinhua and Landrace pigs. The challenged Landrace pigs shed more E. coli (P < 0.05) and had higher percentage of E. coli in the total bacteria population in the colon (P < 0.05) compared with their Jinhua counterparts. Both pig breeds tended to exhibit greater villous atrophy and crypt depth reduction in all of the intestinal segments with challenge. The expression of tight junction proteins decreased in response to ETEC K88 challenge in both pig breeds. The levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, and IL-6 and the secretion of sIgA were positively altered whereas the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β were negatively altered by ETEC K88 challenge in both breeds. Jinhua pigs exhibited significantly higher levels of IFN-γ and TGF-β (P < 0.05) in the challenged group. Our findings provide valuable evidence to explain the differences in the intestinal physiology between Jinhua and Landrace pigs; that is, Jinhua pigs appeared to show better growth performance, a lower incidence of diarrhea, and a lower extent of immune activation in response to ETEC K88 challenge and a higher Lactobacillus population, a higher percentage of Lactobacillus in the total bacteria population, a higher ratio of Lactobacillus to E. coli, and higher levels of tight junction proteins with and without challenge.

Abstract
This is a review regarding different types of cancer treatments. We aimed at analyzing the tumor microenvironment and the recent trends for the therapeutic applications and effectiveness for several kinds of cancers. Traditionally the cancer treatment was based on the neoplastic cells. Methods such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, which were targeted on the highly proliferating mutated tumor cells, have been investigated. The tumor microenvironment describes the non-cancerous cells in the tumor and has enabled to investigate the behavior and response of the cancer cells to a treatment process; it consists in a tissue that may have a predictive significance for tumor behavior and response to therapy. These include fibroblasts, immune cells and cells that comprise the blood vessels. It also includes the proteins produced by all of the cells present in the tumor that support the growth of the cancer cells. By monitoring changes in the tumor microenvironment using its molecular and cellular profiles as the tumor progresses will be vital for identifying cell or protein targets for the cancer prevention and its therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inherited myoclonus-dystonia (IMD) is a new term for an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by myoclonus and dystonia. Recently, IMD was linked to a region on chromosome 11q23 with two different mutations identified in the D2 dopamine receptor gene and linked to chromosome 7q with five different loss-of-function mutations identified in the epsilon-sarcoglycan gene. METHODS These two regions and genes were excluded in a large Canadian family with IMD in whom 13 individuals are affected. A 25-cM genome scan of this large family with 32 individuals was performed. RESULTS Two-point linkage analysis revealed a maximum lod score of 3.5 (recombination fraction 0.00; affected only) for the microsatellite marker GATA185C06-18 and a multipoint lod score of 3.9 across the 18p11 region. Haplotype analysis demonstrates that all the affected individuals shared a common haplotype between markers D18S1132 and D18S843 that defines the disease gene within a span of 16.9 cM. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that a novel IMD gene exists on chromosome 18p11.

Abstract
Nine src family members are known including c-Src, c-Yes, c-Lck, c-Fyn, c-Hck, c-Lyn, c-Blk, c-Fgr and c-Yrk. They encode proteins with molecular weights of 55-62 kilodaltons (kDa), which are either cytoplasmic or membrane-associated protein tyrosine kinases. A close correlation exists between an elevated pp60c-src tyrosine kinase activity and cell transformation. However, the level of activation of pp60c-src in non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) remains obscure. The aim of this study was to examine the level of activity of pp60c-src in NSCLC. pp60c-src expression and in vitro protein tyrosine kinase activity in lung cancer tissue samples were measured by western blotting and in vitro kinase assays and compared with those in the surrounding non-tumour lung tissue from the same patient. pp60c-src phosphorylation was assessed by two-dimensional tryptic phosphopeptide mapping. The kinase activity of pp60c-src was significantly activated in NSCLC, especially in adenocarcinomas. In addition, the pp60c-src kinase activity increased with the size of the adenocarcinoma. Two-dimensional tryptic phosphopeptide mapping showed dephosphorylation of pp60c-src at Tyr 530 in adenocarcinomas. The proto-oncogene product, pp60c-src, was activated in NSCLC, especially in adenocarcinomas, in part through the dephosphorylation of Tyr 530. Our results suggest that activation of pp60c-src might play an important role in the progression of lung adenocarcinomas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous results from our trial showed that adding oxaliplatin to radiotherapy (RT) increased survival in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at 2 years. Here, we present the data of long-term efficacy and late toxic effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between January 2001 and January 2003, 115 Patients with nonkeratinizing/undifferentiated locoregionally advanced NPC were randomly to receive either RT alone (n = 56) or plus concurrent oxaliplatin 70 mg/m(2) weekly for six cycles (n = 59). RESULTS After a median follow-up of 114 months (range 18-139 months), the 5-year overall survival (OS) and metastasis-free survival (MFS) rates in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) group were significantly higher than those observed in the RT-alone group (OS, 73.2% versus 60.2%, P = 0.028; MFS, 74.7% versus 63.0%, P = 0.027). However, CCRT did not improve locoregional failure-free survival significantly. Subgroup analyses showed that the superiorities of CCRT mainly existed in the T3-4N0-1 stage subgroup (OS: HR = 0.394, P = 0.034). The grade 3/4 late toxic effects were similar in the two groups. CONCLUSION(S) The long-term follow-up data confirms the role of CCRT as a treatment of locoregionally advanced NPC. Oxaliplatin can be considered as an alternative optional therapeutic regimen for these patients due to its high efficiency and low toxic effect.

Abstract
Free radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by all aerobic cells and are widely believed to play a significant role in aging as well as a number of degenerative or pathological diseases. This study compared the free radical-scavenging properties and antioxidant activity of YCP, a polysaccharide from the mycelium of a marine filamentous fungus Phoma herbarum YS 4108 and its two chemically sulfated derivatives YCP-S1 and YCP-S2. Sulfation, which masks hydroxyl groups of YCP polysaccharide molecule, could introduce new antioxidant activity, such as superoxide and hydroxyl radicals scavenging activity, metal chelating action, lipid peroxidation and linoleic acid oxidation inhibition capability. Furthermore, sulfated YCP was more potent than YCP at protecting erythrocytes against oxidative damage hemolysis. The current data suggest for the first time that sulfation of polysaccharide significantly increases its antioxidant activity and the chemical modification of polysaccharides may allow the preparation of derivatives with new properties and a variety of applications.

Abstract
Anatomical, histochemical and biochemical approaches were used to study mercury uptake and phytotoxicity as well as anti-oxidative responses in two species of ferns [Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata) and Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)], grown in a hydroponic system. The roots of both cultivars accumulated large amounts of mercury, but exhibited limited mercury translocation to shoots. Mercury exposure led to more pronounced phytotoxicity accompanied by stronger oxidative stress in the shoots of P. vittata than in N. exaltata. N. exaltata established a more effective anti-oxidative system against mercury-induced oxidative stress than did P. vittata. The activity of anti-oxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase) increased. The reduced ascorbate (ASA) and oxidized ascorbate (DHA) are regulated. Mercury exposure led to an increase in the concentration of glutathione (GSH) in both fern species. The present study suggests that N. exaltata is more tolerant to mercury exposure than P. vittata, which has been also reported to be more tolerant to arsenic exposure. N. exaltata may thus have potential for phytostabilization of soils or phytofiltration of waste water contaminated with mercury.

Abstract
Arsenic, a carcinogenic trace element, threatens not only the health of millions of humans and other living organisms, but also global sustainability. We present here, for the first time, the global industrial-age cumulative anthropogenic arsenic production and its potential accumulation and risks in the environment. In 2000, the world cumulative industrial-age anthropogenic arsenic production was 4.53 million tonnes. The world-wide coal and petroleum industries accounted for 46% of global annual gross arsenic production, and their overall contribution to industrial-age gross arsenic production was 27% in 2000. Global industrial-age anthropogenic As sources (as As cumulative production) follow the order: As mining production>As generated from coal>As generated from petroleum. The potential industrial-age anthropogenic arsenic input in world arable surface in 2000 was 2.18 mg arsenic kg(-1), which is 1.2 times that in the lithosphere. The development of substitute materials for arsenic applications in the agricultural and forestry industries and controls of arsenic emissions from the coal industry may be possible strategies to significantly decrease arsenic pollution sources and dissipation rates into the environment.

Abstract
The practice of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CEMRA) has changed significantly in the span of a decade. Concerns regarding gadolinium (Gd)-associated nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in those with severely impaired renal function spurred developments in low-dose CEMRA and non-contrast MRA as well as efforts to seek alternative MR contrast agents. Originally developed for MR imaging use, ferumoxytol (an ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle), is currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adults with renal disease. Since its clinical availability in 2009, there has been rising interest in the scientific and clinical use of ferumoxytol as an MR contrast agent. The unique physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of ferumoxytol, including its long intravascular half-life and high r1 relaxivity, support a spectrum of MRI applications beyond the scope of Gd-based contrast agents. Moreover, whereas Gd is not found in biological systems, iron is essential for normal metabolism, and nutritional iron deficiency poses major public health challenges worldwide. Once the carbohydrate shell of ferumoxytol is degraded, the elemental iron at its core is incorporated into the reticuloendothelial system. These considerations position ferumoxytol as a potential game changer in the field of CEMRA and MRI. In this paper, we aim to summarise our experience with the cardiovascular applications of ferumoxytol and provide a brief synopsis of ongoing investigations on ferumoxytol-enhanced MR applications.

Abstract
Genetic study of β-glucan content and β-glucanase activity has been facilitated by recent developments in quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis. QTL for barley and malt β-glucan content and for green and finished malt β-glucanase activity were mapped using a 123-point molecular marker linkage map from the cross of Steptoe/Morex. Three QTL for barley β-glucan, 6 QTL for malt β-glucan, 3 QTL for β-glucanase in green malt and 5 QTL for β-glucanase in finished malt were detected by interval mapping procedures. The QTL with the largest effects on barley β-glucan, malt βglucan, green malt β-glucanase and finished malt βglucanase were identified on chromosomes 2,1,4 and 7, respectively. A genome map-based approach allows for dissection of relationships among barley and malt βglucan content, green and finished malt β-glucanase activity, and other malting quality parameters.

Abstract
Partial amphiploids are lines that contain 42 (38-42) wheat and 14 (14-18) alien chromosomes. They are derived by backcrossing wheat onto hybrids between wheat and either Thinopyrum intermedium (6x) or Th. ponticum (10x). GISH analysis has shown that, with possibly one exception, the alien genomes (chromosome sets) in partial amphiploids are found to be hybrids i.e. composed of chromosomes from more than one alien genome. The individual partial amphiploids are meiotically stable and nearly perfectly fertile, but hybrids between different lines were characterized by varying numbers of unpaired chromosomes and consequently variable degrees of sterility. Translocated chromosomes involving different Thinopyrum genomes or Thinopyrum and wheat genomes were found in partial amphiploids and consequently in the addition lines derived from them. Partial amphiploids have proven to be an excellent tertiary gene pool for wheat improvement, containing resistance to biotic stresses not present in wheat itself. Resistance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) and Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) have been found in partial amphiploids and addition lines derived from both Th. intermedium and Th. ponticum. Excellent resistance to Fusarium head blight has been found on a Th. intermedium chromosome that had substituted for chromosome 2D in wheat. Genes for resistance to leaf rust and stem rust have already been incorporated into wheat and tagged with molecular markers.

Abstract
YCP, a mitogenic polysaccharide with its molecular weight (MW) of 2.4 x 10(3) kDa, was isolated from the mycelium of the marine filamentous fungus Phoma herbarum YS4108 by a combination of ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-32 and gel permeation over Sephacryl S-400. The detailed compositional, spectroscopic and methylation analyses of the polysaccharide demonstrated that its backbone possessed most likely a linear alpha-(1 --> 4) bonded glucopyranoside main chain co-bearing through side alpha-(1 --> 6)-linkage. The alpha-(1 --> 4) bondage of the glucopyranoside building blocks in YCP was confirmed by the observation that it could be hydrolyzed by the alpha-amylase produced by Bacillus licheniformis. A reliable concentration monitoring experimentation highlighted that the reducing sugars released continuously from YCP during its incubation with the enzyme, and the MW of the main resulting fragment weighed 0.8 x 10(4) Da with approximately 10% of YCP converted to maltose, maltotriose and glucose after a 120-min enzymatic degradation. Finally, YCP was found to be able to increase phagocytic activity of mice in vitro and in vivo, indicating that it may be looked up as a potent immunomodulator that could activate macrophages.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the genetic pathogeny of multiple morphological anomalies of the flagella (MMAF), which is a genetically heterogeneous disorder leading to male infertility. Nine patients with severe asthenozoospermia caused by MMAF were recruited. Whole genome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were performed, and we found that four of the nine patients were affected by the same homozygous frameshift mutation c.11726_11727delCT (p.[Pro3909ArgfsTer33]) in exon 73 of dynein axonemal heavy chain 1 ( DNAH1 ) gene. The parents and the sibling of proband 1 were all identified as heterozygous carriers. This mutation was distinct from previously reported DNAH1 mutations associated with MMAF and only affected the East Asian group. Furthermore, the variant DNAH1 protein could not be detected in spermatozoa by Western blot or immunofluorescence staining although DNAH1 mRNA was expressed in the spermatozoa. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed the anomalies in sperm flagella morphology and ultrastructure in patients carrying this genetic variant. In conclusion, our results add to knowledge of the genetic pathogeny of MMAF and further confirmed the effectiveness of genetic screening in the diagnosis of MMAF.

Abstract
Qualitative analysis of the nonanthocyanin phenolics from 2 mulberry cultivars, da-10 and hongguo, was performed by the HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS method. Six nonanthocyanin phenolics compounds were identified (procatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, 4-caffeolyquinic acid, taxifolin, rutin, quercetin) and 3 others (3,5-diCQA, taxifolin-hexoside, kamepferol-hexoside) were tentatively identified. Quantification of nonanthocyanin phenolic was performed by HPLC-DAD, which revealed that rutin (111.38 and 90.79 microg/g FW) was the major nonanthocyanin phenolics in the 2 mulberry cultivars. Phenolic acids in cultivar da-10 (54.68 microg/g FW) were far more than in cultivar hongguo (14.93 microg/g FW). CQA and its isomers (40.02 microg/g FW) were the major phenolic acid in cultivar da-10. The nonanthocyanin phenolics in the 2 cultivars of mulberry had higher antiradical activities in superoxide anion and DPPH radical and antioxidant activity in beta-CLAMS assay than the Trolox. These results were relevant to not only the control of color stability and organoleptic characteristics of mulberry juice and wine but also the exploitation of the functional foods made from mulberry.

Abstract
Pteridines are a class of compounds excreted in urine, the levels of which are found to elevate significantly in tumor-related diseases. For the first time, we have developed a method, based on high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection, to monitor the pteridine levels in urine. HPCE provides better separation than high-performance liquid chromatography and the LIF detector enables us to detect minute amounts of pteridines in body fluid. Eight different pteridine derivatives were well separated in 0.1 M Tris-0.1 M borate-2 mM EDTA buffer (pH 8.75) using a 60-cm fused-silica capillary (50-micron i.d., 35-cm effective length), six of which were detected and characterized in urine samples from normal persons and different cancer patients. The detection limits of these pteridines are under 1 x 10(-10) M. The levels of neopterin, pterine, xanthopterin, and pterin-6-carboxylic acid were found to be significantly elevated in urine excreted by cancer patents, while the level of isoxanthopterin dropped in these patients. No significant change of biopterin level was found between healthy individuals and cancer patients. This method can be used in clinical laboratories either for cancer monitoring or for precancer screening.

Abstract
Irrigation with eutrophic water containing microcystins-LR (MC-LR) poses a potential risk to crops. However, the accumulation of MC-LR in rice grains and the mechanism of MC-LR-induced inhibition in rice roots are not understood. In this study, we detected the accumulation of MC-LR in rice grains collected from Taihu Lake region. MC-LR could accumulate in rice grains, but the risk evaluation suggested that MC-LR levels in rice grains from Taihu Lake region may not pose a threat to human health currently. In addition, MC-LR with low concentrations did not affect the growth of rice roots. However, MC-LR with high concentrations impeded the rice root morphogenesis by inhibiting root elongation, crown root formation, and lateral root development from primordia. Treatment with high concentrations of MC-LR stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) in rice roots. Exogenous NO treatment reversed the inhibition of rice root growth under MC-LR stress. These results indicated that ROS and NO played important roles in the development of rice roots in responding to MC-LR stress.

Abstract
We previously reported that orthovanadate composed of vanadate (V(5+)) activates phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling through inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatases, thereby eliciting neuroprotection in brain ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, therapeutic doses of orthovanadate are associated with diarrhea due to inhibition of ATPase. By contrast, vanadyl (V(4+)) organic compounds show low cytotoxicity. Since both vanadate and vanadyl inhibit protein tyrosine phosphatases, we tested whether bis(1-oxy-2-pyridinethiolato)oxovanadium(IV) [VO(OPT)] in a vanadyl form elicits a neuroprotection in brain ischemia. In a mouse transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, pre- and post-treatments with VO(OPT) significantly reduced infarct volume in a dose-dependent manner. Like orthovanadate, activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway mediated neuroprotective action. VO(OPT) treatment inhibited reduced Akt phosphorylation at Ser-473 following brain ischemia and restored decreased phosphorylation of forkhead box class O (FOXO) family members such as FKHR, FKHRL1, and AFX. Consistent with inhibition of FOXO dephosphorylation, VO(OPT) treatment blocked elevated expression of Fas-ligand, Bim and active caspase-3 24 h after ischemia/reperfusion. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was designed to examine respiratory control in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), with or without CO(2) retention. METHODS We recruited 10 body mass index-matched, apnea-hypopnea index-matched, age-matched, and lung function-matched OSAHS patients, according to their awake PaCO(2). Five patients were hypercapnic (PaCO(2), > or = 45 mm Hg), and five patients were eucapnic. Hypoxic responses (the ratio of the change in minute ventilation [DeltaV(E)] to the change in arterial oxygen saturation [DeltaSaO(2)] and the ratio of the change in mouth occlusion pressure over the first 100 ms of inspiration against an occluded airway [DeltaP(0.1)] to DeltaSaO(2)) and hypercapnic responses (DeltaV(E)/DeltaPCO(2) ratio and DeltaP(0.1)/DeltaPCO(2) ratio) were tested during wakefulness before treatment in all 10 patients, and before and during treatment (at 2, 4, and 6 weeks) with pressure support in the hypercapnic group. RESULTS Hypercapnic patients had lower mean (+/- SD) DeltaV(E)/DeltaSaO(2) ratio than eucapnic patients (-0.17 +/- 0.04 vs -0.34 +/- 0.04 L /min/%SaO(2), respectively), lower mean DeltaP(0.1)/DeltaSaO(2) ratio (-0.04 +/- 0.02 vs -0.14 +/- 0.03 cm H(2)O/%SaO(2), respectively), and lower DeltaP(0.1)/DeltaPCO(2) ratio (0.23 +/- 0.1 vs 0.49 +/- 0.1 cm H(2)O/mm Hg, respectively) [p < 0.05]. After receiving noninvasive ventilation treatment, the hypercapnic and hypoxic responses of the hypercapnic patients increased. At 4 to 6 weeks, values for both responses had increased to within the normal range and PaCO(2) had fallen to < 45 mm Hg, while weight was unchanged. CONCLUSIONS Depressed chemoresponsiveness plays a role that is independent of obesity in the development of CO(2) retention in some OSAHS patients, and it may be a response to sleep-disordered breathing.
