Abstract
The frequencies of genetic apo E isoforms E2, E3 and E4 were determined in 523 patients with myocardial infarction and compared to those in a control group (1031 blood donors). A significant difference in the frequency of apo E4 was noted between patients and controls (0.05 greater than P greater than 0.025). No differences in the frequencies of isoforms E3 and E2 were observed. In particular, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the frequency of apo E2 homozygosity, a condition that is associated with type III hyperlipoproteinemia. However, all E2 homozygote survivors of myocardial infarction had hyperlipoproteinemia type III (cholesterol 269 +/- 29 mg/dl; triglyceride 419 +/- 150 mg/dl; age 54 +/- 14 years; N = 5). On the contrary, E2 homozygote controls (all apo E-2/2 blood donors and their apo E-2/2 relatives who were from the same age range as the patients) had primary dysbetalipoproteinemia but normal or subnormal plasma cholesterol concentrations (cholesterol 184 +/- 28 mg/dl; triglyceride 151 +/- 52 mg/dl; age 56 +/- 13 years; N = 11). This indicates that E2 homozygotes with hyperlipoproteinemia type III who occur rarely in the population but comprise about 1% of myocardial infarction patients have a markedly increased risk for coronary atherosclerosis, whereas the risk for E2 homozygotes with normal or subnormal plasma cholesterol (= primary dysbetalipoproteinemia) may be considerably lower than for the general population. The data illustrate the complex relationship between apo E genes, lipid levels, and risk for atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Three probands heterozygous for a mutant of apolipoprotein AI (apo AIMarburg, Utermann et al. 1982a) were detected by screening of 2282 unrelated individuals resulting an a frequency estimate of about 1/750 in the German population. All three probands with apo AIMarburg had hypertriglyceridemia (triglyceride above 250 mg/dl) and subnormal HDL-cholesterol (below 30 mg/dl), but no other lipoprotein abnormalities. The kindreds of two probands with AIMarburg were studied. The family data are consistent with an autosomal codominant inheritance of the trait. A total of 16 heterozygous blood relatives with the mutant AIMarburg were detected in these kindreds. Analysis of the plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels in relation to the apo AI phenotype was complicated by the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease in one kindred and of hyperlipidemia in both kindreds. No consistent relationship between plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels, and the mutant apo AI could be demonstrated. Instead the mutant apo AI and the dyslipoproteinemia seem to co-exist independently in these kindreds. Three sibs with the homozygous apo E-2/2 phenotype were detected in one kindred, and all three sibs had subnormal LDL-cholesterol and beta-VLDL, e.g., the lipoprotein abnormality characterizing primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Genetic apo E phenotypes and the apo AI mutant segregated independently, indicating that the structural gene loci for apo E and apo AI are not closely linked.

Abstract
A compact, robust grating spectrometer based on an optimised micro-electro-mechanical grating mirror component has been developed, built, and characterised. The application of an oscillating reflection grating micro-mirror component as scanning dispersive element in a modified Czerny-Turner monochromator layout enables the design of compact grating spectrometers capable of acquiring full spectra using a single detector element. Designed for a wavelength range between 1200 and 1900 nm, the spectrometer features a spectral resolution of 10 nm with wavelength stability better than +/-0.5 nm. One-hundred scan spectra can be acquired in less than one second, or spectral changes can be monitored at time a resolution of less than 10 ms. In combination with a fibre-optic interface and a typical weight of less than 1 kg, this makes this novel type of fully portable micro-electro-mechanical near-IR scanning spectrometer an interesting alternative to existing spectrometers and opens a range of new applications, in particular the detection of major and minor components in the near-IR.

Abstract
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma flocculare are genetically similar. However, M. hyopneumoniae causes porcine enzootic pneumonia, while M. flocculare is a commensal bacterium. M. hyopneumoniae and M. flocculare do not penetrate their host cells, and secreted proteins are important for bacterium-host interplay. Thus, the secretomes of a swine trachea cell line (NPTr) infected with M. hyopneumoniae 7448 (a pathogenic strain), M. hyopneumoniae J (a non-pathogenic strain) and M. flocculare were compared to shed light in bacterium-host interactions. Medium from the cultures was collected, and secreted proteins were identified by a LC-MS/MS. Overall numbers of identified host and bacterial proteins were, respectively, 488 and 58, for NPTr/M. hyopneumoniae 7448; 371 and 67, for NPTr/M. hyopneumoniae J; and 203 and 81, for NPTr/M. flocculare. The swine cells revealed different secretion profiles in response to the infection with each M. hyopneumoniae strain or with M. flocculare. DAMPs and extracellular proteasome proteins, secreted in response to cell injury and death, were secreted by NPTr cells infected with M. hyopneumoniae 7448. All three mycoplasmas secreted virulence factors during NPTr infection, but M. hyopneumoniae 7448 secreted higher number of adhesins and hypothetical proteins, that may be related with pathogenicity. SIGNIFICANCE: The enzootic pneumonia caused by mycoplasmas of swine respiratory tract has economic loss consequences in pig industry due to antibiotic costs and pig weight loss. However, some genetically similar mycoplasmas are pathogenic while others, such as Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma flocculare, are non-pathogenic. Here, we conducted an infection assay between swine cells and pathogenic and non-pathogenic mycoplasmas to decipher secreted proteins during host-pathogen interaction. Mycoplasma response to cell infection was also observed. Our study provided new insights on secretion profile of swine cells in response to the infection with pathogenic and non-pathogenic mycoplasmas. It was possible to observe that pathogenic M. hyopneumoniae 7448 secreted known virulence factors and swine cells responded by inducing cell death. Otherwise, M. hyopneumoniae J and M. flocculare, non-pathogenic mycoplasmas, secreted a different profile of virulence factors in response to swine cells. Consequently, swine cells altered their secretome profile, but the changes were not sufficient to cause disease.

Abstract
The demand for functional foods is increasing each year because consumers are gaining awareness about the importance of a healthy diet in the proper functioning of the body. Probiotics are among the most commonly known, commercialized, and studied foods. However, the loss of viability of probiotic products is observed during their formulation, processing, and storage. This study aimed to investigate the co-encapsulation of two Lactobacillus paracasei probiotic strains (LBC81 and ELBAL) with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) in a calcium alginate matrix using extrusion technology with gelatin as a coating material. The viability of the strains under gastrointestinal conditions and in storage at low temperature was also assessed. An immobilization yield of more than 59% was observed for both bacterial strains. Exposure to 2% biliary salts led to a decrease in the viability of free cells in the two L. paracasei strains, whereas the viability of microencapsulated cells increased up to 47%. After 35 days of storage at 4°C, the population of free cells was reduced, but microencapsulated cells remained stable after storage at low temperature. LBC81 bacteria microencapsulated with 1.5% FOS coated with gelatin were the most resistant to the stressful environments tested. Therefore, these results showed that co-encapsulation with FOS in a calcium alginate matrix coated with gelatin improved L. paracasei survival and may be useful for the development of more resistant probiotics and new functional foods.

Abstract
CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recognized for its superior tissue contrast while being non-invasive and free of ionizing radiation. Due to the development of new scanner hardware and fast imaging techniques during the last decades, access to tissue and organ functions became possible. One of these functional imaging techniques is perfusion imaging with which tissue perfusion and capillary permeability can be determined from dynamic imaging data. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS Perfusion imaging by MRI can be performed by two approaches, arterial spin labeling (ASL) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. While the first method uses magnetically labelled water protons in arterial blood as an endogenous tracer, the latter involves the injection of a contrast agent, usually gadolinium (Gd), as a tracer for calculating hemodynamic parameters. PERFORMANCE Studies have demonstrated the potential of perfusion MRI for diagnostics and also for therapy monitoring. ACHIEVEMENTS The utilization and application of perfusion MRI are still restricted to specialized centers, such as university hospitals. A broad application of the technique has not yet been implemented. PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS The MRI perfusion technique is a valuable tool that might come broadly available after implementation of standards on European and international levels. Such efforts are being promoted by the respective professional bodies.

Abstract
The advantages of light and matter-wave Sagnac interferometers--large area on one hand and high rotational sensitivity per unit area on the other--can be combined utilizing ultraslow light in cold atomic gases. While a group-velocity reduction alone does not affect the Sagnac phase shift, the associated momentum transfer from light to atoms generates a coherent matter-wave component which gives rise to a substantially enhanced rotational signal. It is shown that matter-wave sensitivity in a large-area interferometer can be achieved if an optically dense vapor at subrecoil temperatures is used. Already a noticeable enhancement of the Sagnac phase shift is possible, however, with far fewer cooling requirements.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The radioactively labelled ovaries of Wistar rats were examined by autoradiography and activity measurement after long-term treatment of varying duration with an oral contraceptive (Lyndiol®). The administration of Lyndiol® led to the absence of the normal oestrous cycle and, after more prolonged treatment, to a reduction both in the number and size of follicles and to atrophy of the ovaries. As calculated per 1 mg dry organ weight, the DNA values found were within the range of the cycle-dependent fluctuations; however, they were a great deal lower when the reduced organ weight was taken into account.

Abstract
In 171 patients with coronary arteriosclerosis the severity of the angiographic findings was assessed by the score of Friesinger. The total serum cholesterol concentration showed an only weak positive correlation with the extent of coronary arteriosclerosis. In contrast, a strict correlation could be documented with the LDL-HDL ratio. The LDL-HDL ratio was 1.49 in the control group with angiographically free coronary arteries, 1.95 in patients with an angiographic score of 1-5, 2.39 at a score of 6-10, and 2.75 at a score of 11-15. The corresponding total serum cholesterol values (control group: 219 mg/100 ml) were 229 mg/100 ml, 242 mg/100 ml and 258 mg/100 ml. Especially at still normal serum cholesterol concentrations an already pathological shift in the lipoprotein pattern in correlation with the extent of coronary arteriosclerosis was indicated by the LDL-HDL ratio. Thus a greater predictive power for coronary risk is attributed to the LDL-HDL ratio rather than to the total serum cholesterol concentration.
