Abstract
The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled "Observation of night-time emissions of the Earth in the near UV range from the International Space Station with the Mini-EUSO detector" (Remote Sensing of Environment, Volume 284, January 2023, 113336, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2022.113336). The data have been acquired with the Mini-EUSO detector, an UV telescope operating in the range 290-430 nm and located inside the International Space Station. The detector was launched in August 2019, and it has started operations from the nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module in October 2019. The data presented here refer to 32 sessions acquired between 2019-11-19 and 2021-05-06. The instrument consists of a Fresnel-lens optical system and a focal surface composed of 36 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, each with 64 channels, for a total of 2304 channels with single photon counting sensitivity. The telescope, with a square field-of-view of 44°, has a spatial resolution on the Earth surface of 6.3 km and saves triggered transient phenomena with a temporal resolution of 2.5 µs and 320 µs. The telescope also operates in continuous acquisition at a 40.96 ms scale. In this article, large-area night-time UV maps obtained processing the 40.96 ms data, taking averages over regions of some specific geographical areas (e.g., Europe, North America) and over the entire globe, are presented. Data are binned into 0.1° × 0.1° or 0.05° × 0.05° cells (depending on the scale of the map) over the Earth's surface. Raw data are made available in the form of tables (latitude, longitude, counts) and .kmz files (containing the .png images). These are - to the best of our knowledge - the highest sensitivity data in this wavelength range and can be of use to various disciplines.

Abstract
BackgroundShort disease duration is a predictor for progressive systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD), but studies assessing ILD progression in later disease stages are lacking. To individually tailor management of ILD in SSc patients in clinical practice it is, however, of high importance to understand disease behaviour also in patients with late disease.ObjectivesAnalyse ILD progression in SSc-ILD patients from the EUSTAR cohort segregated by subgroups of disease duration.MethodsWe segregated SSc-ILD patients into four categories of disease duration (≤3 years, >3- ≤7 years, >7- ≤15 years and >15 years after onset of Raynaud’s phenomenon). We assessed progressive ILD, defined as forced vital capacity (FVC) decline >10% or FVC decline ≥10% and FVC decline 5–10% and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) decline ≥15% (composite decline) over the first and second 12+/-3 months period after first registration (baseline) into EUSTAR. Clinical characteristics, pulmonary involvement, treatment at first registration and ILD progression were evaluated by descriptive statistics.ResultsIn total, 2258 SSc-ILD patients were included, with 469 (20.8%) having a disease duration ≤3 years, 550 (24.4%) between >3- ≤7 years, 752 (33.3%) between >7- ≤15 years and 488 (21.6%) of >15 years (Table 1). Baseline characteristics and treatment patterns differed between the four subgroups, with more younger male patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc, anti-topoisomerase I antibody and higher Rodnan skin score having ≤3 years disease duration. Lung function with FVC and DLCO were similar between the four groups (Table 1). Notably, in the first and second 12+/-3 months periods after first registration in the EUSTAR database, there were no significant difference in FVC decline >10% or composite FVC and DLCO decline within the four subgroups. In our analysis of ILD progression by four disease duration categories, we showed that ILD frequently progressed also in late disease stages. Abstract
BackgroundEnrichment strategies from clinical trials for progressive systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) have been partly successful but have not been tested in a real life cohort.ObjectivesAnalyse the efficacy, representativeness and feasibility of enrichment strategies in SSc-ILD patients from the EUSTAR cohort.MethodsWe applied the inclusion criteria of major recent SSc-ILD trials (focuSSced, SLS II and SENSCIS) in SSc-ILD patients and assessed progressive ILD, defined as absolute change in forced vital capacity (FVC) and as significant progression (FVC decline >10%) over time. Data were compared to all patients and patients not fulfilling any inclusion criteria.ResultsIn total, 2258 SSc-ILD patients were included, with 31.2% meeting SENSCIS, 5.8% SLS II, 1.6% focuSSced criteria and 1529 (67.7%) not meeting any criteria (Table 1). In the first 12+/-3 months, a slow FVC% decline of –0.1% was seen in the total, unselected cohort and in patients fulfilling SENSCIS criteria. Patients fulfilling criteria from focuSSced showed a strong FVC decline of –3.7%. Notably, patients enriched for SLS II criteria showed FVC improvement of +2.3% (Figure 1). In contrast, patients fulfilling the focuSSced and SLS II inclusion criteria showed numerical improvement of lung function in the second period (Figure 1). There were no significant associations of enrichment criteria and ILD progression in the second period.Over the mean observation period of 2.3 years, patients not fulfilling any inclusion criteria showed the same FVC decline of –0.9 (12.1) as observed for the total cohort (–0.9% (12.6)). There were numerical differences in FVC changes in the enriched patient cohorts, varying from –2.8% FVC decline in patients fulfilling the focuSSced criteria to +3.4% FVC improvement with SLS II criteria.ConclusionApplication of enrichment criteria from previous clinical trials showed enrichment for progression with variable success but led to selected patient populations reducing feasibility of recruitment. Abstract
Male, 59 years old with no significant pathological history or cardiovascular risk factors. Access to the ER ( 12.30 AM ) with infero–lateral STEMI (Killip I, 2 hours of symptom onset; haemodynamic and electrical stability): chest pain associated with profuse sweating and transient arterial hypotension, ST elevation in V3–V6 and inferior leads on the ECG and apical hypokinesia with slight reduction of LVEF (50%) on the Trans–Thoracic Echocardiography. Urgent coronary angiography: non–obstructive coronary arteries stenosis, short intramyocardial tract of DA with moderate systolic compression with ‘milking effect‘. Blood sampling: mild elevation of cardiac troponin hs value (479 pg / ml), mild anemia and thrombocytopenia; normal value of markes of liver and kidney function. Hospitalization in Cardiac ICU with standard antithrombotic and anti–ischemic therapy. 12 hours after admission (01.00 PM) acute low–flow heart failure with pulmonary edema treated with inotropic agent and need of endotracheal intubation and ventilatory support (ineffective attempt of NIV); ECG unchanged from the previous one and appearance of LVEF 25% for akinesia of septum, apex and lateral wall. Peak of troponin 2083 pg / ml III day: effective extubation with successive cycles of NIV and weaning from noradrenaline. Progressive recovery of LVEF with appearance of SAM with LVOT dynamic obstruction (v max> 4m / s at pulsed doppler) and moderate mitral regurgitation: stop inotropic agent and start beta–blocker therapy (atenolol) not tolerated for hypokinetic arrhythmias (also total BAV) and then successful replaced in the following days with low doses of bisoprolol. Post–Iintubation pneumonia treated with antibiotic therapy. X day: hemodynamic and electrical stability, disappearance of the SAM with complete recovery of the left ventricle contractile function, mild mitral regurgitation(minimal valve prolapse) Cardiac MRI: normal LVEF, absence of myocardial LGE with the exception of small areas of the papillary muscles due to traction of the mitral flaps. In the patient‘s medical history: stressful last months related to smart working and family problems; absence of a specific identifiable trigger.
Conclusions
Stress cardiomyopathy in man patient complicated by progressive acute heart failure and SAM with rapid restitutio ad integrum. Presence of DA myocardial bridge with absence of myocardial LGE on MRI.

Abstract
64Cu is an emerging radionuclide of great interest in personalized nuclear medicine. It is produced by a cyclotron via the reaction 64Ni(p,n)64Cu. This production method increased during the last decades, because small biomedical cyclotrons can be easily installed close to the nuclear medicine department of a hospital. As a matter of fact, 64Ni is a very expensive target material. For this reason, an alternative 64Cu production method was investigated at ENEA by using the quasi-monochromatic 14 MeV fusion neutron beam made available at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) located at the ENEA – Frascati Research Center. In particular, two nuclear reactions were studied: 65Cu(n,2n)64Cu and 64Zn(n,p)64Cu. The radiochemical analysis of the activated samples was performed at the ENEA-NMLNWM laboratory located in ENEA-Casaccia Research Center. The activity measurements were carried out at the ENEA-INMRI, located in the ENEA-Casaccia Research Center, with high metrological level conditions and by assuring their traceability to the 64Cu primary activity standard here developed and maintained. A prediction of the 64Cu production by means of the high-brilliance 14 MeV neutron source named Sorgentina is also discussed.

Abstract
Anthracnose (ANT) and angular leaf spot (ALS) caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum and Pseudocercospora griseola, respectively, are devastating diseases of common bean around the world. Therefore, breeders are constantly searching for new genes with broad-spectrum resistance against ANT and ALS. This study aimed to characterize the genetic resistance of California Dark Red Kidney (CDRK) to C. lindemuthianum races 73, 2047, and 3481 and P. griseola race 63-39 through inheritance, allelism testing, and molecular analyses. Genetic analysis of response to ANT and ALS in recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a CDRK × Yolano cross (CY) showed that the resistance of CDRK cultivar is conferred by a single dominant loci, which we named CoPv01CDRK/PhgPv01CDRK. Allelism tests performed with race 3481showed that the resistance gene in CDRK is independent of the Co-1 and Co-AC. We conducted co-segregation analysis in genotypes of 110 CY RILs and phenotypes of the RILs in response to different races of the ANT and ALS pathogens. The results revealed that CoPv01CDRK and PhgPv01CDRK are coinherited, conferring resistance to all races. Genetic mapping of the CY population placed the CoPv01CDRK/PhgPv01CDRK loci in a 245 Kb genomic region at the end of Pv01. By genotyping 19 RILs from the CY population using three additional markers, we fine-mapped the CoPv01CDRK/PhgPv01CDRK loci to a smaller genomic region of 33 Kb. This 33 Kb region harbors five predicted genes based on the common bean reference genome. These results can be applied in breeding programs to develop bean cultivars with ANT and ALS resistance using marker-assisted selection.

Abstract
Background:Nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) is a feasible method that allows the observation and follow-up of the microvascular changes that mark the course of Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). In previous studies, we demonstrated that the NEMO score, namely the cumulative Number of microhaEMOrrhages and microthromboses, is a good indicator of the steady state level and over time changes of disease activity (DA) in SSc (1-3).Objectives:To verify whether a high NEMO score, and then a high level of active microvascular derangement in the fingers may be predictive of the subsequent development of ischemic digital ulcers (IDUs).Methods:The NEMO score was assessed at baseline (T0) in 98 patients affected by SSc, according to the ACR-EULAR criteria. Out of them, 90 were females, 48 had the limited form and 50 the diffuse cutaneous variant of SSc. ACA and anti-Scl-70 antibodies were positive in 42 and 50 patients, respectively. The NVC pattern was early, active and late in 16, 42 and 40 patients, respectively.Afterwards, patients were closely followed up for 3 years, and the appearance of new IDUs was recorded in any time of the follow up.The T0-NEMO score values of patients who developed IDUs were compared to those of patients who did not. A receiver operating curve (ROC) was constructed, and the area under the curve (AUC) calculated, by plotting the sensitivity and 1-specificity of the different NEMO score values in predicting the development of IDUs.Results:During the follow up, 38 out of 98 patients developed one or more DUs. The NEMO score at T0 was significantly higher in those who developed IDUs with respect to those who did not [median 14.5 (CI 11.0-21.5), and 4.5 (CI 4.0-6.0), respectively, p<.0001]. The AUC was 0.79 (CI 0.69-0.86, p<0.0001). A NEMO score of 12 or more had a sensitivity of 83.3 (CI 71.5-91.7), and a specificity of 63.2 (CI 46.0-78.2), with positive (P) and negative (N) predictive values (PV) of 59.1 (CI 44.9-72.3), and 85.6 (CI 71.7-94.3), respectively. A NEMO score of 16 or more had a sensitivity of 95.0 (CI 86.1-99.0), and a NPV of 93.3 (CI 77.4-99.2).Conclusion:NEMO score is not only a valid tool to assess the level of DA in the course of SSc, but this NVC parameter could also be used as a good predictor of the future development of IDUs in patients with this disease.References:[1]Sambataro et al. Abstract
Background:Undifferentiated connective tissue disease at risk for systemic sclerosis (UCTD-risk-SSc) is a condition characterised by Raynaud’s phenomenon and either SSc marker autoantibodies or typical capillaroscopic findings or both, unsatisfying classification criteria for SSc and evolving into definite SSc in about 30-50% of cases (1,2). Recently, we developed a weighted score based on a baseline IF-ANA titer ≥1:320, marker autoantibody positivity and presence of avascular areas at videocapillaroscopy identifying patients who will evolve with a 91.3% sensitivity and a 73.2% specificity (3).Objectives:To improve the predictivity of the score assessing the role of marker autoantibody ELISA titer and further capillaroscopic items.Methods:The 102 UCTD-risk-SSc patients investigated for the development of the previous score were reassessed for anti-Scl-70 and anti-centromere antibody titers detected by ELISA and for the mean number of capillaries observed in the same capillaroscopic field (Cs) and the total number of giant capillaries (GC) by videocapillaroscopy (4). Each patient was evaluated every 6 months to assess disease progression. Risk prediction was assessed by Cox regression analyses. The predictive value of the score was determined by receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis.Results:Table 1 shows the resulting predictive variables in multivariate Cox analysis and their relative weight in a 10-point scale. No increase in the predictivity was detected by adding the anti-Scl-70 and anti-centromere antibody ELISA titers. However, a mean number of Cs≤5/mm and GC>5 improved the score. Abstract
Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a clinical disorder characterized by recurrent, reversible episodes of digital vasospasm. RP can be classified as primary (pRP) or secondary, depending on whether it occurs as a benign condition (not disease-associated) or is associated with other diseases, mainly of the connective tissues. In both cases, it can be triggered by environmental factors, as indicated by the increased incidence of pRP episodes following exposure to cold, vibration injury or chemicals. The purpose of this prospective case-control study was to assess, in an Italian cohort of 132 pRP patients, the association of the phenomenon with demographic, lifestyle habits, environmental and work-related factors. Compared to healthy controls, pRP was found to be inversely associated with the use of contact lenses (OR = 0.4; p = 0.004) and of chlorous-based disinfectants (OR = 0.3; p < 0.001) and directly associated with the presence of prosthesis implants (OR = 5.3; p = 0.001) and the use of hydrogen peroxide-based compounds (OR = 2.6; p = 0.002), suggesting that the latter should be avoided in RP affected patients. Multivariate and multivariable analysis confirmed the associations. Further investigations are needed to understand the mechanism(s) underlying these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of duration of remission on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS We conducted a 5-year retrospective study on two Italian cohorts. Remission was defined as a continuative period of no clinical disease activity, according to the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2 K, and a permitted maximum prednisone dose of 5 mg/day. HRQoL was measured using the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF36) during the last visit. RESULTS We enrolled 136 female SLE patients. During observation, 15 (11%) patients had been in remission for ≥1 and <2 years, 15 (11%) for ≥2 and <3 years, 19 (14%) for ≥3 and <4 years, 9 (7%) for ≥4 and <5 years, and 53 (39%) had been in prolonged remission for ≥5 years. In the multivariate model, considering depression and fatigue as covariates, patients in prolonged remission showed significantly better scores in the physical functioning (p = 0.039), role physical (p = 0.029), bodily pain (p = 0.0057), general health (p = 0.0033) and social functioning (p = 0.0085) components of the SF36, compared with those in remission <5 years or unremitted. Subsequent mediation analyses found that these effects were partly influenced by depression. CONCLUSION Lupus remission could improve the HRQoL of SLE patients, particularly when associated with appropriate management of depression and fatigue.

Abstract
Time-resolved cameras with high temporal resolution (down to ps) enable a huge set of novel applications ranging from biomedicine and environmental science to material and device characterization. In this work, we propose, and experimentally validate, a novel detection scheme for time-resolved imaging based on a compressed sampling approach. The proposed scheme unifies into a single element all the required operations, i.e. space modulation, space integration and time-resolved detection, paving the way to dramatic cost reduction, performance improvement and ease of use.

Background
Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) are at risk of developing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is often diagnosed late when the benefits of vasoactive therapies are limited. The concept of exercise pulmonary hypertension as a possible transitional phase anticipating resting PAH has been assessed in several pathologies, but has not been endorsed by the latest European Guidelines, because not supported by sufficient data.
Purpose
To evaluate whether PASP values at rest and at peak exercise, estimated at echocardiography, could be predictors of further development of PAH.
Methods
Four hundred and twenty-nine SSc patients without a previous diagnosis of PAH, enrolled at 4 referral Centres, underwent standard exercise Doppler echocardiography with PASP estimation at rest and at peak stress. Patients were then followed-up to assess the development of PAH, as diagnosed by a complete diagnostic work-up including right heart catheterization. PAH was defined by pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure ≥25 mmHg with pulmonary arterial wedge pressure ≤15 mmHg), without significant interstitial lung disease and/or left heart disease.
Results
During the median follow-up of 75 months (IQR 29–114), 16 patients developed PAH. A combined cut-off of ≥24 mmHg as resting PASP and ≥40 as peak PASP was identified as the best predictor of further development of PAH (see Figure). Both resting PASP and peak PASP were predictors of PAH at univariate analysis (resting PASP OR 1.13, 95% C.I. 1.07–1.19, p<0.0001; peak PASP OR 1.13, 95% C.I. 1.07–1.18, p<0.0001). At multivariate analysis, only peak PASP was independently associated to PAH development (OR 1.13, 95% C.I. 1.04–1.18, p<0.001). Only one patient among those with resting PASP <24 mmHg and peak PASP <40 mmHg (34.7% of the total population) developed PAH during the follow-up (after 10 years from normal exercise Doppler echocardiography).

Conclusions
Exercise increase in PASP is an independent predictor of later development of PAH in SSc. An increase in exercise PASP is frequent and is not necessarily associated with a later development of PAH, whereas the very high negative predictive value of a normal PASP both at rest and at peak exercise can be used in the clinical practice to confidently rule out about one third of patients.

Abstract
We introduce a high-performance hyperspectral camera based on the Fourier-transform approach, where the two delayed images are generated by the Translating-Wedge-Based Identical Pulses eNcoding System (TWINS) [Opt. Lett. 37, 3027 (2012)], a common-path birefringent interferometer that combines compactness, intrinsic interferometric delay precision, long-term stability and insensitivity to vibrations. In our imaging system, TWINS is employed as a time-scanning interferometer and generates high-contrast interferograms at the single-pixel level. The camera exhibits high throughput and provides hyperspectral images with spectral background level of -30dB and resolution of 3 THz in the visible spectral range. We show high-quality spectral measurements of absolute reflectance, fluorescence and transmission of artistic objects with various lateral sizes.

Abstract
As manned spaceflights beyond low Earth orbit are in the agenda of Space Agencies, the concerns related to space radiation exposure of the crew are still without conclusive solutions. The risk of long-term detrimental health effects needs to be kept below acceptable limits, and emergency countermeasures must be planned to avoid the short-term consequences of exposure to high particle fluxes during hardly predictable solar events. Space habitat shielding cannot be the ultimate solution: the increasing complexity of future missions will require astronauts to protect themselves in low-shielded areas, e.g. during emergency operations. Personal radiation shielding is promising, particularly if using available resources for multi-functional shielding devices. In this work we report on all steps from the conception, design, manufacturing, to the final test on board the International Space Station (ISS) of the first prototype of a water-filled garment for emergency radiation shielding against solar particle events. The garment has a good shielding potential and comfort level. On-board water is used for filling and then recycled without waste. The successful outcome of this experiment represents an important breakthrough in space radiation shielding, opening to the development of similarly conceived devices and their use in interplanetary missions as the one to Mars.

Abstract
We present a time domain diffuse Raman spectrometer for depth probing of highly scattering media. The system is based on, to the best of our knowledge, a novel time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) camera that simultaneously acquires both spectral and temporal information of Raman photons. A dedicated non-contact probe was built, and time domain Raman measurements were performed on a tissue mimicking bilayer phantom. The fluorescence contamination of the Raman signal was eliminated by early time gating (0-212 ps) the Raman photons. Depth sensitivity is achieved by time gating Raman photons at different delays with a gate width of 106 ps. Importantly, the time domain can provide time-dependent depth sensitivity leading to a high contrast between two layers of Raman signal. As a result, an enhancement factor of 2170 was found for our bilayer phantom which is much higher than the values obtained by spatial offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), frequency offset Raman spectroscopy (FORS), or hybrid FORS-SORS on a similar phantom.

Abstract
Aims and Background The study was performed to assess the toxicity and impact on relapse pattern of postoperative intraperitoneal cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and interferon therapy as adjuvant treatment for gastric cancer patients who are at high risk for recurrence after potentially curative resection (T2 N1-2; T3-4 N any Mo). Patients and Methods Starting 14 to 21 days after potentially curative resection of primary gastric cancers, 22 patients were given intraperitoneal cisplatin, 60 mg/m2; 5-fluorouracil, 1000 mg/m2; 6S-leucovorin, 250 mg/m2; interferon alpha 2b, 10 MU/m2; every other week for six times. Results After a median follow-up of 24 months, 63 % of patients were alive and free of disease. Eight patients had recurred; five had an intraabdominal component, and 3 had extraabdominal failure. Toxicity was mild: no grade III-IV WHO toxicity was observed. Conclusions Intraperitoneal cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, 6S-leucovorin and interferon is a tolerable therapy in the postoperative setting for patients with resected gastric cancer. These data make this approach interesting for the development of new programs of adjuvant therapy of high-risk gastric cancer.

Abstract
Background Systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Low-dose aspirin, hydroxychloroquine and statins have been suggested to play a prophylactic role of cardiovascular events. This study is devoted to reviewing the literature on the topic and assessing the effects of these drugs in preventing a first cardiovascular event in a two-centre Italian series. Methods A PubMed search on cardiovascular prevention in systemic lupus erythematosus was performed. Moreover, systemic lupus erythematosus patients admitted to two centres from 2000–2015, who at admission had not experienced any cardiovascular event, were investigated. Aspirin, hydroxychloroquine and statin use, and the occurrence of any cardiovascular event, were recorded at each visit. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the role of traditional, disease-related cardiovascular risk factors and of each of the three drugs in the occurrence of new cardiovascular events. Results The literature search produced conflicting results. Two hundred and ninety-one systemic lupus erythematosus patients were included in the study and followed for a median of eight years. During follow-up, 16 cardiovascular events occurred. At multivariate analysis, taking aspirin (hazard ratio: 0.24) and hydroxychloroquine for more than five years (hazard ratio: 0.27) reduced, while antiphospholipid antibody positivity (hazard ratio: 4.32) increased, the risk of a first cardiovascular event. No effect of statins emerged. Conclusion Our study confirms an additive role of aspirin and hydroxychloroquine in the primary prophylaxis of cardiovascular events in Italian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The lack of any detected effect in previous reports may depend on the design of studies and their short follow-up period.

Abstract
Human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-G has a tolerogenic function and could play a role in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases, including systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aim of this study was to evaluate HLA-G serum expression (sHLA-G) and the HLA-G gene 14 base pairs (bp) insertion/deletion (del(-)/del(+)) polymorphism in patients with Ssc, to search for possible associations with clinical and laboratory variables. sHLA-G was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in sera from 77 patients with SSc and 32 healthy donors (HD); the 14 bp del(-)/del(+) polymorphism was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) genomic DNA. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis identified the HLA-G cut-off that best discriminated dichotomized clinical and serological variables, that was subsequently employed to subdivide SSc patients into HLA-G high (HLA-G(+)) and low (HLA-G(-)) profile groups. sHLA-G were not statistically different between SSc patients and HD, nor between distinct SSc autoantibody subsets. Subdividing SSc patients by HLA-G positivity or negativity yielded significant differences for the modified Rodnan skin score (mRss) (P = 0.032), 'general' (P = 0.031) and 'kidney' (P = 0.028) Medsger severity scores (MSS) and disease activity index, and especially Δ heart/lung (P = 0.005). A worse 'general' MSS (P = 0.002) and Δ heart/lung (P = 0.011) were more frequent in the low sHLA-G group. These two variables and mRss were associated with sHLA-G levels at logistic regression analysis. Treatment had no influence on sHLA-G. Moreover, a higher frequency of scleredema was detected in the del(+)/del(+) than the del(-)/del(+) group (P = 0.04). These data suggest modulatory effects of sHLA-G on SSc. Prospective studies are needed to investigate a role in predicting the disease course.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate how chronic intake of glucocorticoids (GCs) is perceived by patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in terms of necessity and concerns, and whether such beliefs influence treatment adherence. METHOD Ninety-eight consecutive SSc patients who they had been taking oral GCs for > 3 months prior to the study were enrolled. All patients underwent a clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations, and were asked to complete four self-administered questionnaires: the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (Specific-BMQ), the four-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-4), the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI). Moreover, patients answered two additional questions investigating their knowledge about GC-related adverse events (AEs). RESULTS Seventy-seven patients (83.6%) believed in the necessity of GCs for maintaining health but 72.8% also reported concerns about potential AEs to GCs. A high adherence rate was recorded in 64.1% of patients. Only about 20% of patients reported knowing that a daily GC dose and treatment duration influence the burden of GC-related AEs. Patients who believed that GC-related AEs were influenced by the dose scored lower concerns (p = 0.043) and were more frequently labelled as accepting (perceiving high necessity and low concerns) (p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS The majority of patients taking GCs perceived them as necessary, but high concerns about chronic GC use exist. Patients with a poorer knowledge of the factors associated with GC-related AEs and those with a poorer quality of life were the most worried about these compounds. Experimental studies assessing the efficacy of educational programmes aiming to increase the adherence to GC therapy should be planned in these patients.
