Physiological mechanisms associated with the use of a passive heat intervention: positive implications for soccer substitutes

PURPOSE

Soccer substitutes are exposed to periods of limited activity before entering match-play, likely negating benefits of active warm-ups. This study aimed to determine the effects of using a passive heat intervention following a pre-match, and half-time warm-up, on muscle and core temperature in soccer players during ambient (18 °C) and cold (2 °C) conditions.

METHODS

On four occasions, 8 male players, completed a pre-match warm-up, followed by 45 min of rest. Following this, participants completed a half-time re-warm-up followed by an additional 45 min of rest, simulating a full match for an unplaying substitute. During periods of rest, participants wore either standardised tracksuit bottoms (CON), or heated trousers (HEAT), over typical soccer attire.

RESULTS

Vastus lateralis temperature declined less in HEAT compared to CON following the 1st half in 2 °C (Δ - 4.39 ± 0.81 vs. - 6.21 ± 1.32 °C, P = 0.002) and 18 °C (Δ - 2.48 ± 0.71 vs. - 3.54 ± 0.88 °C, P = 0.003). These findings were also observed in the 2nd half for the 2 °C (Δ - 4.36 ± 1.03 vs. - 6.26 ± 1.04 °C, P = 0.002) and 18 °C (Δ - 2.85 ± 0.57 vs. - 4.06 ± 1 °C, P = 0.018) conditions. In addition, core temperature declined less in HEAT compared to CON following the 1st (Δ - 0.41 ± 0.25 vs. - 0.84 ± 0.41 °C, P = 0.037) and 2nd (Δ - 0.25 ± 0.33 vs. - 0.64 ± 0.34 °C, P = 0.028) halves of passive rest in 2 °C, with no differences in the 18 °C condition. Perceptual data confirmed that participants were more comfortable in HEAT vs. CON in 2 °C (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Following active warm-ups, heated trousers attenuate the decline in muscle temperature in ambient and cold environments.

The impact of passive heat maintenance strategies between an active warm-up and performance: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Prior to exercise, a warm-up routine has been suggested to be an imperative factor in task readiness with the anticipation that it will enhance performance. One of the key benefits of a warm-up is the increase in muscle and core temperature, which can be achieved in a variety of ways. An effective way to achieve improvements in core and muscle temperature is by performing an active warm-up. However, lengthy transition periods between an active warm-up and exercise performance are known to cause a decline in core and muscle temperature, thereby reducing performance capability. As such, methods are needed to assist athletes during transition periods, to maintain the benefits of a warm-up with the aim of optimising performance. Accordingly, the purpose of this review is to systematically analyse the evidence base that has investigated the use of passive heating to aide sporting performance when a transition period is experienced.

METHODS

A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken following relevant studies being identified using PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO. Studies investigating the effects of passive heating strategies during the transition period between an active warm-up and exercise performance were included. The quality of the included studies were assessed by two independent reviewers using a modified version of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale.

RESULTS

Seven studies, all high quality (mean = 7.6), reported sufficient data (quality score > 5) on the effects of passive heating strategies on exercise performance, these studies consisted of 85 well-trained athletes (78 male and 7 female). Passive heating strategies used between an active warm-up and exercise, significantly increased peak power output in all studies (ES = 0.54 [95% CI 0.17 to 0.91]). However, only a favourable trend was evident for exercise performance (ES = 1.07 [95% CI - 0.64 to 0.09]).

CONCLUSIONS

Based upon a limited number of well-conducted, randomised, controlled trials, it appears that passive heating strategies used between an active warm-up and exercise have a positive impact on peak power output. Although, additional research is necessary to determine the optimum procedure for passive warm-up strategies.

Improved Endurance Running Performance Following Haskap Berry (Lonicera caerulea L.) Ingestion

BACKGROUND

Food high in (poly)phenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins, have the potential to improve exercise recovery and exercise performance. Haskap berries are rich in anthocyanins, but no research has examined the potential to improve human performance. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of Haskap berry on parameters of endurance running performance.

METHODS

Using a double-blind, placebo controlled, independent groups design, 30 male recreational runners (mean ± SD age, 33 ± 7 years; stature, 178.2 ± 7.2 cm; mass, 77.7 ± 10.6 kg; V˙O2peak, 52.2 ± 6.6 mL/kg/min) volunteered to participate. Following familiarisation, volunteers visited the laboratory twice (separated by seven days) to assess submaximal, maximal and 5 km time trial running performance. After the first visit, volunteers were randomly assigned to consume either the Haskap berry intervention or an isocaloric placebo control.

RESULTS

There were modest changes in heart rate and V˙O2 at submaximal intensities (p < 0.05). Time to exhaustion during the V˙O2peak test was longer in the Haskap group by 20 s (p = 0.031). Additionally, 5 km time trial performance was improved in the Haskap group by ~21 s (p = 0.016), which equated to a 0.25 km/h increase in mean running speed compared to the placebo control; this represented a >2% improvement in running performance.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of this newly identified functional food to athletes has the capacity to improve endurance running performance.

The 15-Country Collaborative Study of Cancer Risk among Radiation Workers in the Nuclear Industry: estimates of radiation-related cancer risks

A 15-Country collaborative cohort study was conducted to provide direct estimates of cancer risk following protracted low doses of ionizing radiation. Analyses included 407,391 nuclear industry workers monitored individually for external radiation and 5.2 million person-years of follow-up. A significant association was seen between radiation dose and all-cause mortality [excess relative risk (ERR) 0.42 per Sv, 90% CI 0.07, 0.79; 18,993 deaths]. This was mainly attributable to a dose-related increase in all cancer mortality (ERR/Sv 0.97, 90% CI 0.28, 1.77; 5233 deaths). Among 31 specific types of malignancies studied, a significant association was found for lung cancer (ERR/Sv 1.86, 90% CI 0.49, 3.63; 1457 deaths) and a borderline significant (P = 0.06) association for multiple myeloma (ERR/Sv 6.15, 90% CI <0, 20.6; 83 deaths) and ill-defined and secondary cancers (ERR/Sv 1.96, 90% CI -0.26, 5.90; 328 deaths). Stratification on duration of employment had a large effect on the ERR/Sv, reflecting a strong healthy worker survivor effect in these cohorts. This is the largest analytical epidemiological study of the effects of low-dose protracted exposures to ionizing radiation to date. Further studies will be important to better assess the role of tobacco and other occupational exposures in our risk estimates.

Risk of cancer after low doses of ionising radiation: retrospective cohort study in 15 countries

OBJECTIVES

To provide direct estimates of risk of cancer after protracted low doses of ionising radiation and to strengthen the scientific basis of radiation protection standards for environmental, occupational, and medical diagnostic exposures.

DESIGN

Multinational retrospective cohort study of cancer mortality.

SETTING

Cohorts of workers in the nuclear industry in 15 countries.

PARTICIPANTS

407 391 workers individually monitored for external radiation with a total follow-up of 5.2 million person years.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS

Estimates of excess relative risks per sievert (Sv) of radiation dose for mortality from cancers other than leukaemia and from leukaemia excluding chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the main causes of death considered by radiation protection authorities.

RESULTS

The excess relative risk for cancers other than leukaemia was 0.97 per Sv, 95% confidence interval 0.14 to 1.97. Analyses of causes of death related or unrelated to smoking indicate that, although confounding by smoking may be present, it is unlikely to explain all of this increased risk. The excess relative risk for leukaemia excluding chronic lymphocytic leukaemia was 1.93 per Sv (< 0 to 8.47). On the basis of these estimates, 1-2% of deaths from cancer among workers in this cohort may be attributable to radiation.

CONCLUSIONS

These estimates, from the largest study of nuclear workers ever conducted, are higher than, but statistically compatible with, the risk estimates used for current radiation protection standards. The results suggest that there is a small excess risk of cancer, even at the low doses and dose rates typically received by nuclear workers in this study.

Effects of low doses and low dose rates of external ionizing radiation: cancer mortality among nuclear industry workers in three countries

Studies of the mortality among nuclear industry workforces have been carried out, and nationally combined analyses performed, in the U.S., the UK and Canada. This paper presents the results of internationally combined analyses of mortality data on 95,673 workers (85.4% men) monitored for external exposure to ionizing radiation and employed for 6 months or longer in the nuclear industry of one of the three countries. These analyses were undertaken to obtain a more precise direct assessment of the carcinogenic effects of protracted low-level exposure to external, predominantly gamma, radiation. The combination of the data from the various studies increases the power to study associations between radiation and specific cancers. The combined analyses covered a total of 2,124,526 person-years (PY) at risk and 15,825 deaths, 3,976 of which were due to cancer. There was no evidence of an association between radiation dose and mortality from all causes or from all cancers. Mortality from leukemia, excluding chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)--the cause of death most strongly and consistently related to radiation dose in studies of atomic bomb survivors and other populations exposed at high dose rates--was significantly associated with cumulative external radiation dose (one-sided P value = 0.046; 119 deaths). Among the 31 other specific types of cancer studied, a significant association was observed only for multiple myeloma (one-sided P value = 0.037; 44 deaths), and this was attributable primarily to the associations reported previously between this disease and radiation dose in the Hanford (U.S.) and Sellafield (UK) cohorts. The excess relative risk (ERR) estimates for all cancers excluding leukemia, and leukemia excluding CLL, the two main groupings of causes of death for which risk estimates have been derived from studies of atomic bomb survivors, were -0.07 per Sv [90% confidence interval (CI): -0.4, 0.3] and 2.18 per Sv (90% CI: 0.1, 5.7), respectively. These values correspond to a relative risk of 0.99 for all cancers excluding leukemia and 1.22 for leukemia excluding CLL for a cumulative protracted dose of 100 mSv compared to 0 mSv. These estimates, which did not differ significantly across cohorts or between men and women, are the most comprehensive and precise direct estimates of cancer risk associated with low-dose protracted exposures obtained to date. Although they are lower than the linear estimates obtained from studies of atomic bomb survivors, they are compatible with a range of possibilities, from a reduction of risk at low doses, to risks twice those on which current radiation protection recommendations are based.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Effects of tetrodotoxin-induced neural inactivation on single muscle fiber metabolic enzymes

Selected enzymes were measured in mixed-fiber bundles and individual fibers from rat plantaris (PL) and soleus (Sol) muscles that had undergone either 2 wk of tetrodotoxin (TTX) inactivation of the sciatic nerve, a sham operation, or were contralateral to the TTX limb. TTX disuse caused severe wasting of PL (46%) and Sol (26%) muscles and of single fibers (50% and 40%, respectively). TTX PL and Sol also had reduced (50%) glycogen content. In TTX, PL, and Sol macro samples and single fibers, the activities (mol.h-1.kg dry wt-1) of hexokinase, glycogen phosphorylase, and lactate dehydrogenase were higher, lower, and unchanged, respectively, compared with controls. Single-fiber data showed that these changes occurred in all fibers. In TTX PL macro samples, activities of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), citrate synthase (CS), beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (BOAC), and thiolase were, or tended to be, lower. Single-fiber data showed a disappearance of high-oxidative moderate glycolytic fibers (i.e., usually fast-twitch oxidative in control) and the appearance of more fibers with a metabolic enzyme profile approaching that of control slow-oxidative fibers. In TTX Sol macro samples, GPDH and PK tended to be higher, and thiolase, BOAC, CS, and MDH lower. Single-fiber data corroborated these findings and suggested the appearance of fast fibers with downregulated oxidative enzyme profiles. Our results suggest that neuromuscular activity is a major, but not the sole, determinant of the size and metabolic heterogeneity that exists in muscle cells.

PRODUCTION OF Be7 IN THE ATMOSPHERE

The concentration of Be7 in the atmosphere has been determined by measuring the activity associated with dust particles in ground level air. It is calculated that the observed concentration is maintained by a production rate of 2300 atoms Be7/cm.2/day in northern latitudes.
