Dataset of night-time emissions of the Earth in the near UV range (290-430 nm), with 6.3 km resolution in the latitude range -51.6<L<+51.6 degrees, acquired on board the International Space Station with the Mini-EUSO detector

The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled "Observation of night-time emissions of the Earth in the near UV range from the International Space Station with the Mini-EUSO detector" (Remote Sensing of Environment, Volume 284, January 2023, 113336, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2022.113336). The data have been acquired with the Mini-EUSO detector, an UV telescope operating in the range 290-430 nm and located inside the International Space Station. The detector was launched in August 2019, and it has started operations from the nadir-facing UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module in October 2019. The data presented here refer to 32 sessions acquired between 2019-11-19 and 2021-05-06. The instrument consists of a Fresnel-lens optical system and a focal surface composed of 36 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, each with 64 channels, for a total of 2304 channels with single photon counting sensitivity. The telescope, with a square field-of-view of 44°, has a spatial resolution on the Earth surface of 6.3 km and saves triggered transient phenomena with a temporal resolution of 2.5 µs and 320 µs. The telescope also operates in continuous acquisition at a 40.96 ms scale. In this article, large-area night-time UV maps obtained processing the 40.96 ms data, taking averages over regions of some specific geographical areas (e.g., Europe, North America) and over the entire globe, are presented. Data are binned into 0.1° × 0.1° or 0.05° × 0.05° cells (depending on the scale of the map) over the Earth's surface. Raw data are made available in the form of tables (latitude, longitude, counts) and .kmz files (containing the .png images). These are - to the best of our knowledge - the highest sensitivity data in this wavelength range and can be of use to various disciplines.

AB0651 Clinical Impact and Prognosis of cryoglobulinemia and cryofibrinogenemia in Systemic Sclerosis

Background

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is reported to be a secondary cause of cryoglobulinemia as well as cryofibrinogenemia. However, prevalence, clinical implication and associated pronostic of cryoprecipitates in SSc are unknown.

Objectives

To describe the prevalence, the phenotype and evaluate the prognosis of cryoglobulinemia and/or cryofibrinogenemia associated with systemic sclerosis.

Methods

We included all adult (≥18 years) consecutive SSc patients from the Systemic Scleroderma Toulouse Cohort (SSTC) [1] for whom a cryoglobulin and/or cryofibrinogen measurement was carried out at the immunology laboratory of the Toulouse University Hospital between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2018 and at least one follow-up visit. We compared SSc-patients characteristics’ with and without cryoglobulinemia > 50 mg/l and with and without cryofibrinogenemia. Survival analysis based on presence of cryoglobulin cryofibrinogen was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models (ascending step-by-step method) were used to determine baseline variables associated with cryoglobulin or cryofibrinogen presence.

Results

166 patients were included in the study. 74.6% of patients were women, with a average age at diagnosis of 51.2 years-old. 24% were diffuse cutaneous subtypes and 71.6% limited cutaneous subtypes. Anti-centromere and anti-Scl70 were respectively positive in 44.5% and 21.6% of cases. All these patients were assessed for cryoglobulin detection and 75 cryofibrinogen detection in serum. 43.3% had a cryoglobulinemia >50 mg/l. 46.6% had cryofibrinogenemia. Patients with cryoglobulinemia >50 mg had more cardiac diastolic involvement (22.8% vs. 5.1% p=0.0395). In the multivariate analysis, diastolic involvement (HR=6.23; p=0.0331) was an independent predictor of cryoglobulin >50 mg/l. Survival at 10 years was better for patients with cryoglobulinemia >50 mg/l (log-rank 0.0363) (Figure 1). Survival at 5 and 10 years was 97.6% and 88.8% respectively in patients with cryoglobulinemia >50 mg/l versus 91.9% and 78.4% in patients with cryoglobulinemia <50 mg/l. In cox regression model adjusted for gender, age and type of systemic sclerosis, cryoglobulin >50 mg/l was negatively associated with mortality (HR: 0.09; p=0.03). The presence of cryofibrinogenemia was not associated with any clinical, biological or morphological features. In the multivariate analysis, no variable was predictive of the presence of cryofibrinogenemia in patients with SSc. The presence of cryofibrinogenemia had no influence on the mortality of these patients.

Conclusion

In SSc patients, the presence of cryoglobulin >50 mg/l is an independent predictive factor of cardiac diastolic involvement and is associated with a better survival. However, cryofibrinogenemia does not influence clinical phenotype or impact mortality in SSc patients.

POS0884 DESCRIPTIVE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF SEVERE CARDIAC INVOLVEMENT IN SYSTEMIC SCLEROSIS: A BICENTRIC RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON 459 PATIENTS

Background

The prevalence of cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) varies in the literature between 3% and 44% and represents a leading cause of mortality in this disease. The incidence of severe cardiac involvement and the factors associated with the occurrence of severe cardiac involvement are not known in the literature.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence, prognosis and factors associated with the occurrence of severe cardiac involvement during SSc course.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective, bi-centric study from January 1, 1966 to December 31, 2018. The patients included had a diagnosis of SS according to the ACR/EULAR 2013 criteria. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of severe cardiac involvement. Cardiac involvement was defined by the presence of at least one of the following elements: death of cardiovascular origin, left ventricular ejection fraction less than or equal to 50%, abnormality of at least 3 measurement parameters of diastolic function, global longitudinal strain less than or equal to 18 in absolute value, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular extrasystoles requiring intervention or elevated troponin. Patients with associated myositis and whose only criterion for cardiac involvement was elevated troponin were not included in the group with cardiac involvement. Severe cardiac involvement was defined by the occurrence of hospitalization for cardiovascular reasons or by death of cardiovascular origin. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine variables associated with severe cardiac involvement occurrence. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method with comparisons performed using the log rank test.

Results

Four hundred and fifty-nine patients with SSc were included and were followed for a median of 7.1 years [3.1; 13.3]. The median age of our population was 54 years old. There were 81% of women, 77% of patients had limited cutaneous SSc, 15% diffuse cutaneous SSc and 8% SSc sine scleroderma. Of the 459 patients, 105 (23%) had cardiac involvement and 56 (12%) severe cardiac involvement. The incidence of severe cardiac involvement was 2.42 per 100 patient years. Ninety-six hospitalizations were recorded, including 40 (42%) for acute heart failure, 19 (20%) for arrhythmia, 5 (5%) for acute pericarditis, 6 (6%) for acute myocarditis and 14 (15 %) for coronary artery disease (acute coronary syndrome, myocardial infarction or coronary revascularization). The independent factors associated with severe cardiac involvement in SSc were age over 54 years at SSc-diagnosis (OR = 3.21 95% CI [1.73; 5.95], p < 0.001), the presence of myositis (OR = 5.01 95% CI [1.89; 13.28], p = 0.001), pericardial involvement (OR = 3.79 95% CI [2.05; 7.03]; p < 0.001) or scleroderma renal crisis (OR = 4.72 95% CI [2.05; 10.92], p < 0.001). The survival rate of patients with severe cardiac involvement was 70% at 5 years and 53% at 10 years. Patients with severe cardiac involvement had a mortality risk three times greater than patients without severe cardiac involvement, HR = 3.1 (95% CI [1.7; 5.7], p<0.0001) (Figure 1). Pericardial involvement was an independent risk factor for mortality, HR = 2.0 (95% CI [1.02; 4.0], p=0.04).

Conclusion

We need to focus our clinical attention on diagnosing and manage cardiac involvement in SSc, as severe cardiac involvement is not uncommon and is responsible for a poor prognosis.

Unraveling the genetic diversity and phylogeny of Leishmania RNA virus 1 strains of infected Leishmania isolates circulating in French Guiana

Introduction

Leishmania RNA virus type 1 (LRV1) is an endosymbiont of some Leishmania (Vianna) species in South America. Presence of LRV1 in parasites exacerbates disease severity in animal models and humans, related to a disproportioned innate immune response, and is correlated with drug treatment failures in humans. Although the virus was identified decades ago, its genomic diversity has been overlooked until now.

Methodology/Principles findings

We subjected LRV1 strains from 19 L. (V.) guyanensis and one L. (V.) braziliensis isolates obtained from cutaneous leishmaniasis samples identified throughout French Guiana with next-generation sequencing and de novo sequence assembly. We generated and analyzed 24 unique LRV1 sequences over their full-length coding regions. Multiple alignment of these new sequences revealed variability (0.5%–23.5%) across the entire sequence except for highly conserved motifs within the 5’ untranslated region. Phylogenetic analyses showed that viral genomes of L. (V.) guyanensis grouped into five distinct clusters. They further showed a species-dependent clustering between viral genomes of L. (V.) guyanensis and L. (V.) braziliensis, confirming a long-term co-evolutionary history. Noteworthy, we identified cases of multiple LRV1 infections in three of the 20 Leishmania isolates.

Conclusions/Significance

Here, we present the first-ever estimate of LRV1 genomic diversity that exists in Leishmania (V.) guyanensis parasites. Genetic characterization and phylogenetic analyses of these viruses has shed light on their evolutionary relationships. To our knowledge, this study is also the first to report cases of multiple LRV1 infections in some parasites. Finally, this work has made it possible to develop molecular tools for adequate identification and genotyping of LRV1 strains for diagnostic purposes. Given the suspected worsening role of LRV1 infection in the pathogenesis of human leishmaniasis, these data have a major impact from a clinical viewpoint and for the management of Leishmania-infected patients.

Leishmaniasis is a well-known parasitosis due to an infection by the protozoan Leishmania parasites firmly established in South America. In French Guiana, where leishmaniasis is a public health problem, having an annual incidence of 5.6 cases/10,000 inhabitants, 80% of Leishmania spp. parasites are infected by an endosymbiotic virus, Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV1). The purpose of this study was to gain insights on the genetic variability and evolution of LRV1 at the genomic level. We subjected 20 Leishmania isolates obtained from cutaneous lesions with next generation sequencing and de novo sequence assembly. This allowed generating 24 LRV1 full-length coding sequences presenting among themselves a significant genetic diversity. The inferred phylogenetic relationships enabled to identify distinct well-supported genotypes and support the hypothesis of co-evolution between LRV1 strains and their parasite hosts. In addition, we identified multiple LRV1 infections in three parasite isolates. Based on these data, future characterization of new strains from other geographic areas and other parasite species should extend knowledge of LRV1 diversification processes. Finally, these results allowed us to identify genomic regions where best to allocate resources for subsequent analyses of LRV1 viral diversity and genotyping that could serve for accurate routine molecular diagnostic applications.

Frequency and distribution of mixed Plasmodium falciparum-vivax infections in French Guiana between 2000 and 2008

Background

The two main plasmodial species in French Guiana are Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum whose respective prevalence influences the frequency of mixed plasmodial infections. The accuracy of their diagnosis is influenced by the sensitivity of the method used, whereas neither microscopy nor rapid diagnostic tests allow a satisfactory evaluation of mixed plasmodial infections.

Methods

In the present study, the frequency of mixed infections in different part of French Guiana was determined using real time PCR, a sensitive and specific technique.

Results

From 400 cases of malaria initially diagnosed by microscopy, real time PCR showed that 10.75 % of the cases were mixed infections. Their prevalence varied considerably between geographical areas. The presence, in equivalent proportions, of the two plasmodial species in eastern French Guiana was associated with a much higher prevalence of mixed plasmodial infections than in western French Guiana, where the majority of the population was Duffy negative and thus resistant to vivax malaria.

Conclusion

Clinicians must be more vigilant regarding mixed infections in co-endemic P. falciparum/P. vivax areas, in order to deliver optimal care for patients suffering from malaria. This may involve the use of rapid diagnostic tests capable of detecting mixed infections or low density single infections. This is important as French Guiana moves towards malaria elimination.

Comparison of tetrazolium salt assays for evaluation of drug activity against Leishmania spp

In French Guiana, leishmaniasis is an essentially cutaneous infection. It constitutes a major public health problem, with a real incidence of 0.2 to 0.3%. Leishmania guyanensis is the causal species most frequently encountered in French Guiana. The treatment of leishmaniasis is essentially drug based, but the therapeutic compounds available have major side effects (e.g., liver damage and diabetes) and must be administered parenterally or are costly. The efficacy of some of these agents has declined due to the emergence of resistance in certain strains of Leishmania. There is currently no vaccine against leishmaniasis, and it is therefore both necessary and urgent to identify new compounds effective against Leishmania. The search for new drugs requires effective tests for evaluations of the leishmanicidal activity of a particular molecule or extract. Microculture tetrazolium assays (MTAs) are colorimetric tests based on the use of tetrazolium salts. We compared the efficacies of three tetrazolium salts-3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT), and 2-(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-disulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (WST-8)-for quantification of the promastigotes of various species of Leishmania. We found that the capacity of Leishmania to metabolize a tetrazolium salt depended on the salt used and the species of Leishmania. WST-8 was the tetrazolium salt best metabolized by L. guyanensis and gave the best sensitivity.

[COPD and lung cancer: epidemiological and biological links]

Lung cancer and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) are two common fatal diseases. Apart from their common link to tobacco, these two diseases are usually considered to be the result of separate distinct mechanisms. In the past 15 years, numerous studies have produced arguments in favour of a relationship between these two pathologies that goes beyond a simple addition of risk factors. At the epidemiological level, there are data that demonstrate an increased incidence of bronchial carcinoma in patients with COPD. The links between these two pathologies are still unexplained but there are numerous arguments supporting a common physiopathology. Common genetic and epigenetic abnormalities, mechanical factors and signalisation pathways have been quoted. COPD and lung cancer appear to be two diseases possessing a genetic basis that creates a predisposition to environmental or toxic assaults, resulting in a different clinical manifestation in each disease. Consequently, improvements in the management of these two diseases will involve a more intensive investigation of their physiopathology, and require a closer collaboration between research centres and clinical units.

[Radiofrequency ablation of primary lung cancer: a single centre experience]

INTRODUCTION

Radiofrequency ablation is a new interventional radiological technique for the treatment of primary or secondary lung tumors of small size (less than 3 cm) in inoperable patients or patients unsuitable for external radiotherapy. This procedure is already used in liver and renal cancers and metastases, and is now being evaluated in primary and secondary lung tumors.

METHODS

We have followed-up, by CT scanning, 12 consecutive patients with primary lung tumors treated by radiofrequency ablation in our institution between 2004 and 2008.

RESULTS

Our study shows that radiofrequency ablation is well-tolerated with few minor side effects (75% pneumothorax) and no major side effects. Moreover, it gives good local control (8.3% local progression).

CONCLUSIONS

Radiofrequency appears to be a valuable alternative to surgery for inoperable patients presenting with a small primary lung tumor.

[Concurrent split-course chemotherapy and radiotherapy for unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer: preliminary results of a Phase II study]

PURPOSE

We initiated at Hospital de Mulhouse a prospective phase II study to assess a split-course concurrent radiochemotherapy in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From March 1996 to December 1997, 28 patients were included in our study. All patients had a stage III cancer. The chemotherapy scheduled included vinorelbine (20 mg/m2/d, d1 and d5), cisplatin (20 mg/m2/d, from d1 to d5), and 5-Fluorouracil (350 mg/m2/d, from d1 to d5 by continuous infusion). The planned irradiation dose was 12.5 Gy per week with one daily fraction of 2.5 Gy from d1 to d5. Cycles were repeated every four weeks, for four cycles (50 Gy). Patients with a partial or complete response were proposed a fifth cycle.

RESULTS

Of the 28 patients of the study, only 27 were analysed; one patient had a metastatic disease at diagnosis. Major hematologic toxicity occurred in 26% of the patients. One to five cycles of chemoradiotherapy were administrated per patient (median: four). Four patients had received fewer than three cycles and their responses were not assessable. Of the 23 patients assessed, 12 responses (52%) were observed, three CR (13%) and nine PR (39%). Median follow-up was 14 months, and median survival 13.5 months. One- and two-year survival rates were respectively 63% and 14%. Local control rates was 11%, and 44% of the patients had a metastatic evolution.

CONCLUSION

Very preliminary results of this phase II study are disappointing, and quite inferior to the published results using chemoradiotherapy with conventional or hyperfractionated radiotherapy. Hematologic toxicity is restrictive. This type of chemoradiotherapy cannot be recommended.

Prognostic factors in ovarian carcinoma in complete histologic remission at second-look surgery

Prognosis of ovarian carcinoma in complete histologic remission (CHR) at second-look surgery is still controversial. In a series of 83 patients in CHR we studied retrospectively several prognostic factors (age, stage, histologic grade, histologic type, initial residual disease after surgery, CA 125 normalization period) to determine which patients present a high risk of relapsing after CHR and could be included in therapeutic protocols for consolidation treatment. Univariate analysis showed that the combination of CA 125 normalization < 8 weeks with absence of macroscopic tumoral residue after initial surgery permits the definition of a group with a very good prognosis, while for patients with CA 125 normalization period > 8 weeks and an initial macroscopic residual tumor, the prognosis is relatively poor (progression-free survival 100% vs. 47%, at 2 years P < 0.05). Using the Cox multivariate analysis, only the initial tumoral residue is of prognostic significance for progression-free survival; there is no prognostic significance for overall survival. The therapeutic strategy for ovarian cancer may be improved for patients in CHR after second-look surgery by determining those at high risk, making it possible to confine consolidation treatment trials to such a group.

Combined use of FLUKA and MCNP-4A for the Monte Carlo simulation of the dosimetry of 10B neutron capture enhancement of fast neutron irradiations

Boron neutron capture enhancement (BNCE) of the fast neutron irradiations use thermal neutrons produced in depth of the tissues to generate neutron capture reactions on 10B within tumor cells. The dose enhancement is correlated to the 10B concentration and to thermal neutron flux measured in the depth of the tissues, and in this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of Monte Carlo simulation to study the dosimetry of BNCE. The charged particle FLUKA code has been used to calculate the primary neutron yield from the beryllium target, while MCNP-4A has been used for the transport of these neutrons in the geometry of the Biomedical Cyclotron of Nice. The fast neutron spectrum and dose deposition, the thermal flux and thermal neutron spectrum in depth of a Plexiglas phantom has been calculated. The thermal neutron flux has been compared with experimental results determined with calibrated thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD-600 and TLD-700, respectively, doped with 6Li or 7Li). The theoretical results were in good agreement with the experimental results: the thermal neutron flux was calculated at 10.3 X 10(6) n/cm2 s1 and measured at 9.42 X 10(6) n/cm2 s1 at 4 cm depth of the phantom and with a 10 cm X 10 cm irradiation field. For fast neutron dose deposition the calculated and experimental curves have the same slope but different shape: only the experimental curve shows a maximum at 2.27 cm depth corresponding to the build-up. The difference is due to the Monte Carlo simulation which does not follow the secondary particles. Finally, a dose enhancement of, respectively, 4.6% and 10.4% are found for 10 cm X 10 cm or 20 cm X 20 cm fields, provided that 100 micrograms/g of 10B is loaded in the tissues. It is anticipated that this calculation method may be used to improve BNCE of fast neutron irradiations through collimation modifications.

Selective delivery of 10B to soft tissue sarcoma using 10B-L-borophenylalanine for boron neutron capture therapy

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) may improve the locoregional control of radio/chemoresistant tumours like soft tissues sarcomas (STS). This technique uses the 10B(n,alpha)7Li nuclear reaction to destroy tumour cells, provided that a sufficient amount of 10B may be carried selectively into them. In order to evaluate the targeting potential of 10B-L-borophenylalanine (BPA) a 10B biodistribution study was carried out in 24 Wistar rats bearing Yoshida sarcoma. Six animals received increasing intraperitoneal doses of BPA (300, 600 and 1200 mg kg-1), while the remainder received a BPA dose of 600 mg kg-1 but with a sacrifice at six different time points: 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 h. The 10B concentrations in the tumours, normal tissues and blood were analysed with neutron capture radiography (NCR). The analysis shows that 36 micrograms g-1 (+/- 4 SD) of 10B may be incorporated into the tumour, with a ratio of 13 (+/- 4 SD) versus the muscle and a ratio of 15 (+/- 3 SD) versus the blood, 6 h after an intraperitoneal injection of 600 mg kg-1 of BPA. The BPA appears to be abundantly incorporated in the tumour, and the kidney proximal tubule area. These data suggest that BNCT using BPA may provide an improved therapeutic ratio for the treatment of STS.

[Cancer of the breast in men. 106 cases]

In a retrospective and multicentre study 106 cases treated from 1970 to 1985 were analysed. The patients' median age was 64 years. TNM classification showed 20 T1, 48 T2, 2 T3, 32 T4 and 4 Tx. Twenty one patients had clinical gynaecomastia; 99 underwent surgery and 85 radiotherapy; 32 received adjuvant chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. The main histological type was ductal infiltrating carcinoma; 82 axillary dissections were performed, and positive lymph nodes were found in 67 percent of the cases. Hormone receptors were positive in 15 out of 20 measured cases. Five and 10 years overall survival rates (Kaplan-Meier) were 57 and 37 percent, and corrected survival rates 68 and 55 percent respectively. The main prognostic factor remains the clinical size of the tumour (T) and histologically axillary node status (pN). Eleven patients developed a second metachronous cancer. The aetiology of male breast cancer is a poorly known as that of female breast cancer. Nevertheless, imbalance among oestrogens and androgens due to metabolic, infectious or pharmacological causes is probably responsible, at least in part, for this cancer. An on-going multicentre prospective national trial tries to address this question.

Combination of recombinant interferon alpha-2a and vinblastine in advanced renal cell cancer

Among 40 evaluable patients with metastatic renal cell cancer treated by high-dose interferon alpha-2a in combination with vinblastine, the authors have observed a 42.5% response rate. The 8 months' median duration of remissions is relatively short but some patients experience very long remissions, lasting many months after discontinuation of therapy. The survival of responding patients is significantly longer than the survival of nonresponders. The diverging results of other studies of the same combination are discussed; its efficacy is certainly dependent on the type of interferon, on the dose actually administered, and on the compliance to this often poorly tolerated treatment.

[Negative contrast in x-ray computed tomography. Preliminary study]

For the abdominal and pelvic CT Scan, the authors propose the filling of the bladder, the duodenal loop, the stomach and the rectum with a lipidic emulsion. The negative density of this emulsion allows a better visualization of the pancreas, the gastric wall and the bladder wall as well as the extension of pelvic and bowel tumors.

[Treatment of metastatic renal adenocarcinomas with combined recombinant alpha-2a interferon and vinblastine]

The results of treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma have so far been very poor. Many phase II studies have shown that interferon alpha therapy is active in a significant proportion of patients (approximately 10 to 15% complete and partial remission). In the hope of improving these results we have conducted a phase I-II study of the combination of interferon alpha-2a and vinblastine in 21 patients with metastatic renal cell cancer. Side-effects were pronounced and the mean tolerated doses were 12.5 x 10(6) U/m2 interferon alpha three times per week and 0.10 mg/kg vinblastine once every three weeks. We observed a 43% response rate, with 1 complete remission, 8 partial remissions, 4 stabilizations and 8 progressions. These very encouraging results need to be confirmed by large scale studies.

Mitoxantrone combined to vincristine, cyclophosphamide and fluorouracil in advanced breast cancer

In our wide experience of treating advanced breast carcinoma with chemotherapy, the combination of doxorubicin (DOX), vincristine (VCR), cyclophosphamide (CPM) and fluorouracil (FU) gave a complete plus partial response rate of over 60%, with 100% alopecia and frequent cardiac toxicity depending on total dose. After the EORTC Clinical Screening Group phase II trial we have conducted an "expected difference method" comparative phase II trial using the combination DOX, VCR, CPM, FU and the combination of MTX (10mg/m2), VCR, CPM and FU on a population of 50 breast carcinoma patients similar to those taking part in the first study. The reasons for similarity of action will be presented and discussed.

[Demonstration of the existence of a marine cycle in the strigeides: Cardiocephalus longicollis Szidat, 1928 (Trematoda: Strigeidae)]

During their investigations on parasitism of fishes and birds in the lagoon of Brusc (Var), the authors have discovered the life cycle of Cardiocephalus longicollis. Cercariae of pharyngeate furcocercous type develop in sporocysts in the digestive gland of the marine prosobranch Nassa corniculum. The cercaria is identified as Cercaria nassae (Dolgikh, 1965) from Nassa reticulata in Black sea; it closely resembles Cercaria nassa (Martin, 1945) from Ilyanassa obsolseta (syn. Nassa obsoleta) at Woods Hole (U.S.A.). Several intermediate hosts have been related; they are the marine fishes Diplodus annularis, D. vulgaris, Boops salpa, Pagellus mormyrus (Sparidae) and Belone belone (Scombresocidae). Metacercariae of tetracotyle type were found in the cavity of optical lobes of the brain. Experimental contamination of fishes: Potamoschistus microps, Blennius sp., Mugil cephalus and Syngnathus abaster has been negative; that of Diplodus annularis and D. sargus, positive. It allowed to follow the development from cercaria to tetracotyle. In Provence natural definitive hosts are Larus argentatus and L. ribidundus; contaminations of these birds with metacercariae experimentally raised in Diplodus annularis and D. vulgaris were successfull. Some observations are pointed out especially the development of the parasite in the definitive host, the organisation of tribocytic organ and the geographical distribution of the parasite.

This paper deals with life-cycle of Renicola lari J. Timon-David, 1933. Description and illustration are given. Sporocyst development occurs inside the visceral mass of Cerithium mediterraneum and C. Rupestre (Mollusca Prosobranchia). Cercariae are planktonic; they are swallowed up by the second intermediate host, Atherina hepsetus and A. boyeri (Teleostean fishes). Cercariae perforate intestine wall. Metacercariae are encysted in liver. Adult flukes have been recovered in kidneys of uninfected Larus argentatus and L. ridibundus after exerimental contamination with naturally infected fishes. Cercariae of Renicola lari differ from Plagiorchid type cercariae by the following characters : stylet lacking ; very large excretory bladder ; they develop into metacercariae in fishes. Cercariae of R. lari seem to Rhodometope type cercariae ; they have the same excretory bladder. Cercariae of R. lari differ from Rhodometope cercariae in lacking fins on their tail.

[Ecological research work about Trematodes life-cycles in a Provencal lagoon (France). II. The cycle of Maritrema misenensis (A. Palombi, 1940) (Microphallidae Travassos, 1920)]

The authors point out the ecological conditions required for the life-cycle development of Maritrema misenensis (A. Palombi, 1940). This Microphallid parasite occurs in waveless lagoons as well as along the waved marine coast. The first and second intermediate hosts found in these two habitats are not alike. Along the calm edges of the lagoon edges Cerithium mediterraneum (first host) and Orchestia mediterranea (second host) are found whereas along the rocky sea-coast C. rupestre (first host) and O. montagui (second host) are to be seen. The first intermediate hosts are heavily infected along the margin of the lagoon; the parasitism is decreasing gradually as we go away the edge. The infection of the second host depends on the behaviour both of Orchestia and cercariae. Numerous cercariae accumulate against along the very edge of the lagoon, exactly where Orchestia enter the sea-water. The Orchestia parasitism varies as you go along the coast and according to the seasons; it is also different whether you are dealing with males or females.

The life cycle of Maritrema misenensis (A. Palombi, 1940) n. comb. is described with illustrations. The sporocysts parasite the digestive gland of the Prosobranch snail Cerithium mediterraneum. The cercariae are the same as Cercaria misenensis, A. Palombi, 1940 described from Italian coast. The adults have been obtained by artificial infestations of Larus argentatus michaellis. Their morphological features are same as those of the caribbean species Maritrema patulus W.H. Coil, 1955. When the life cycle of the American species is pointed out, it will be possible to know whether there are two or only one species.
