Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vertigo is an extremely debilitating experience for the patient, especially during attacks; it is neither easy to identify nor control. The importance of psychosomatic factors has already been widely studied and discussed. In particular, it has been shown that stress factors are relevant in setting off episodes of dizziness, but there is no agreement if the presence of distress might influence the vestibular disability. METHODS This study is concerned with evaluating the quality of life (QOL) in a group of 206 patients suffering from vertigo and 86 control patients, using the UCLA-Dizziness Questionnaire (UCLA-DQ) scale. The results were correlated with those achieved using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) psychometric test. RESULTS What is clear is that, in patients suffering from vertigo as regards those who are not, there is a significant amount of anxiety and depression distress, especially in female subjects. There appears to be no relationship between psychological change and the various forms of clinical vertigo. In terms of the QOL parameter, what emerges is that, from a statistical point of view, fear of becoming dizzy is most closely correlated with the perception of disability. CONCLUSIONS There is a also a need for psycho-education here in collaboration with the E.N.T. specialist so that the patient can learn to recognise his/her medical condition and be aware of the factors that primarily contribute to the deterioration of their QOL.

Abstract
The present study compares the efficacy and safety of betahistine dihydrochloride to that of a placebo in recurrent vertigo resulting from Meniere's disease (MD) or in paroxysmal positional vertigo (PPV) of probable vascular origin. The design was double-blind, multicentre and parallel-group randomised. Eleven Italian centres enrolled 144 patients: 75 of the patients were treated with betahistine (41 MD/34 PPV) and 69 with placebos (40 MD/29 PPV). The betahistine dosage was 16 mg twice per day for 3 months. Compared to the placebo, betahistine had a significant effect on the frequency, intensity and duration of vertigo attacks. Associated symptoms and the quality of life also were significantly improved by betahistine. Both the physician's judgement and the patient's opinion on the efficacy and acceptability of the treatment were in agreement as to the superiority of betahistine. The effective and safe profile of betahistine in the treatment of vertigo due to peripheral vestibular disorders was confirmed.

Abstract
Fourteen children (aged 14 years or younger) with typical Ménière's triad with cochlear sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and intermittent vertigo attacks lasting from minutes to hours were investigated in four different neuro-otologic centers. Nine children, labeled as having "idiopathic Ménière's disease," developed the auditory and vestibular symptoms without any detectable causative factor. Five children, labeled as suffering from "secondary Ménière's syndrome," had histories of an initial hearing loss following mumps, hemophilus influenza meningitis, temporal bone fracture, or congenital or embryopathic complications in the ear that developed into the full Ménière's triad 5 to 11 years later. The 14 children represent 1% of all cases affected with idiopathic or secondary Ménière's disease (or syndrome) that have been detected during the past five years in the four collaborating centers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effectiveness of visuomotor imagery training in the rehabilitation of unilateral neglect. DESIGN Before-after trial. Behavioral analysis of single cases. SETTING Neurologic rehabilitation unit of a university hospital. PATIENTS Two patients with acquired brain injury who were suffering from severe and long-lasting unilateral neglect consequent to large lesions of cortical and subcortical right-brain. INTERVENTION A behavioral training program consisting of visual and movement imagery exercises. Forty experimental sessions, each lasting 50 minutes, were delivered. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Six neuropsychological tests evaluating unilateral neglect: seven "functional" tests assessing neglect behavior under daily life conditions; a questionnaire (filled out by the patients' relatives) concerning the patients' disability in the family context attributable to neglect. All the outcome measures were recorded at three different times: before, soon after, and 6 months after the end of the experimental training. RESULTS The visuomotor "imagery training" ameliorated the deficit in performance related to neglect in both patients. All the outcome measures (neuropsychological and functional tests and the questionnaire) were positively influenced by the treatment. Moreover, the improvement was stable over a 6-month period, suggesting that the treatment had a long-term effect. CONCLUSIONS The results show the possible effectiveness of a training method based on visuomotor imagery in diminishing impairment and functional disability associated with contralateral neglect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The proline-rich tyrosine kinase Pyk2 is a focal adhesion kinase expressed in blood platelets, and is activated downstream of G-protein coupled receptors as well as integrin α2β1. OBJECTIVE In this study we have investigated the involvement of Pyk2 in integrin αIIbβ3 outside-in signaling in human and murine platelets. METHODS We analyzed the stimulation of intracellular signaling pathways in platelets from Pyk2 knockout mice adherent to immobilized fibrinogen. RESULTS Pyk2 was rapidly phosphorylated and activated in human and murine platelets adherent to fibrinogen through integrin αIIbβ3. Activation of Pyk2 was Src-dependent, but did not require phospholipase Cγ2 activity. Platelets from Pyk2 knockout mice showed a defective ability to adhere and spread on fibrinogen, in association with a dramatic reduction of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) activation and Akt phosphorylation. Pharmacological and genetic analysis demonstrated that integrin αIIbβ3 engagement selectively stimulated the β-isoform of PI3K (PI3Kβ), and that, as for Pyk2, PI3Kβ activation required Src family kinases activity, but not phospholipase Cγ2. In fibrinogen-adherent platelets, both Pyk2 and PI3Kβ were necessary for stimulation of the small GTPase Rap1b, a regulator of cell adhesion and spreading. Integrin αIIbβ3 engagement triggered the association of the PI3Kβ regulatory subunit p85 with the adaptor protein c-Cbl, which was mediated by the p85 SH3 domain, and was independent of c-Cbl tyrosine phosphorylation. However, p85-associated c-Cbl was tyrosine phosphorylated by activated Pyk2 in fibrinogen adherent platelets. CONCLUSIONS These results identify a novel pathway of integrin αIIbβ3 outside-in signaling and recognize the tyrosine kinase Pyk2 as a major regulator of platelet adhesion and spreading on fibrinogen.

Abstract
Tetracyclines, which represent one of the most commonly used antibiotics for poultry, are known to be deposited in bones, where they can remain, despite the observation of appropriate withdrawal times. The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of oxytretracycline (OTC) residues in the bone and muscle of chickens, following the oral administration of a commercially available liquid formulation, and to test their cytotoxic effects on an in vitro cell culture model. Seventy-two 1-day-old broiler chickens were randomly allotted into 2 groups (control and treated animals). OTC (40 mg/kg BW) was administered via drinking water during the 1 to 5 and 20 to 25 days of life periods. At the end of the trial, the birds were slaughtered and the OTC residues in the target tissues were measured by means of liquid chromatography (LC) - tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Cytotoxicity was assessed by evaluating the pro-apoptotic effect of the bone residues on the K562 erythroleukemic line and on the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). In all the animals, the OTC residues in the muscle were far below the established MRL of 100 μg/kg. The OTC levels in the bones of the treated animals were instead found in the parts per million (ppm) range. Cell cytotoxicity was assessed by evaluating the pro-apoptotic effect of OTC bone residues on the haematopoietic cell system. This in vitro system has revealed a significant pro-apoptotic effect on both the K562 cell line and PBMC cultures. This result suggests potential human and animal health risks due to the entry of tetracycline residues contained in the bones of treated livestock into the food-chain. This could be of concern, particularly for canine and feline diets, as meat, bone meal, and poultry by-products represent some of the main ingredients of pet foods, especially in the case of dry pet food. Further studies are needed to define the underlying mechanisms of cytotoxicity and to evaluate the in vivo toxicological implications due to the observed in vitro effects.

Abstract
We report two young adults with definite clinical and computed tomographic (CT) signs of subarachnoid hemorrhage in whom initial angiography showed spasm of the anterior portion of the circle of Willis, but no aneurysm. Repeat angiography some days later, when the vascular spasm had cleared, was likewise negative. In both patients, operation revealed an anterior communicating artery aneurysm, which was successfully excluded from the circulation. Our aims in reporting this unusual experience are to stress the practical importance of CT scanning in the diagnosis and treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage and to discuss the decision to operate.

Abstract
The well-being of dogs can be affected by changes in human lifestyle, eating habits and increased stressors that lead to behavioural disorders including fear, hyperactivity and anxiety, followed by negative affective moods and poor welfare. This randomised, controlled clinical evaluation involved 69 dogs, 38 males and 31 females, of different breeds, with behavioural disorders related to anxiety and chronic stress. They were fed a control diet or a nutraceutical diet (ND group) for 45 days. Neuroendocrine (serotonin, dopamine, β-endorphins, noradrenaline and cortisol) and stress (derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (dROMs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP)) parameters related to behavioural disorders were evaluated at the beginning and end of the study period. Results showed a significant increase in serotonin, dopamine and β-endorphins plasma concentrations (*P<0.05, *P<0.05 and **P<0.01, respectively) and a significant decrease in noradrenaline and cortisol plasma concentrations in the ND group (*P<0.05). dROMs significantly decreased in the ND group (*P<0.05) while BAP was not affected. This study demonstrated for the first time that a specific diet significantly and positively affected neuroendocrine parameters and dROMs. These results open significant perspectives concerning the use of diet and nutraceuticals in the treatment of behavioural disorders.

Abstract
Ethmoidal dural arteriovenous fistulae are rare vascular malformations associated with a high risk of bleeding. We present a multicenter contemporary series of patients treated with microsurgical and endovascular techniques. Sixteen consecutive patients were evaluated and/or treated between 2008 and 2015 at four centers with large experience in the endovascular and surgical treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. We analyzed demographic and clinical data, risk factors for dural fistulas, treatment type, peri- and post-operative morbidity, clinical and radiological outcomes, rates of occlusion, and long-term neurological outcome. Sixteen patients (81 % men, mean age of 58 years) with ethmoidal dural fistulas were included in the analysis. Seven patients had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage; the remaining presenting with neurological signs and symptoms or the fistula was an incidental finding. Three patients were managed conservatively. Among patients who underwent intervention (n = 13), 46.1 % were treated with endovascular therapy and 53.9 % were treated surgically. Complete angiographic obliteration was achieved in 100 % immediately after treatment and at last follow-up evaluation. All patients experienced a favorable neurological recovery (mRS 0-2) at the last follow-up visit (12 months). Ethmoidal dural AVFs are found mostly in male patients. Nowadays, due to wider use of non-invasive imaging, AVFs are discovered with increasing frequency in patients with minimal or no symptoms. Traditionally, these fistulas were considered "surgical." However, in the modern endovascular era, selected patients can be effectively and safely treated with embolization although surgical ligation continues to have an important role in their management.

Abstract
Several extrinsic factors, like drugs and chemicals, can foster autoimmunity. Tetracyclines, in particular oxytetracycline (OTC), appear to correlate with the emergence of immune-mediated diseases. Accumulation of OTC, the elective drug for gastrointestinal and respiratory infectious disease treatment in broiler chickens, was reported in chicken edible tissues and could represent a potential risk for pets and humans that could assume this antibiotic as residue in meat or in meat-derived byproducts. We investigated the in vitro anti-inflammatory properties of a pool of thirteen botanicals as a part of a nutraceutical diet, with proven immunomodulatory activity. In addition, we evaluated the effect of such botanicals in contrasting the in vitro proinflammatory toxicity of OTC. Our results showed a significant reduction in interferon- (INF-) γ production by human and canine lymphocytes in presence of botanicals ((⁎) p < 0.05). Increased INF-γ production, dependent on 24-hour OTC-incubation of T lymphocytes, was significantly reduced by the coincubation with Haematococcus pluvialis, with Glycine max, and with the mix of all botanicals ((⁎) p < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of these botanicals was shown to be able to contrast OTC-toxicity and could represent a new approach for the development of functional foods useful to enhance the standard pharmacological treatment in infections as well as in preventing or reducing the emergence of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Antibiotics are widely used in zoo technical and veterinary practices as feed supplementation to ensure wellness of farmed animals and livestock. Several evidences have been suggesting both the toxic role for tetracyclines, particularly for oxytetracycline (OTC). This potential toxicity appears of great relevance for human nutrition and for domestic animals. This study aimed to extend the evaluation of such toxicity. The biologic impact of the drug was assessed by evaluating the proinflammatory effect of OTC and their bone residues on cytokine secretion by in vitro human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Our results showed that both OTC and OTC‐bone residues significantly induced the T lymphocyte and non‐T cell secretion of interferon (IFN)‐γ, as cytokine involved in inflammatory responses in humans as well as in animals. These results may suggest a possible implication for new potential human and animal health risks depending on the entry of tetracyclines in the food‐processing chain.

Abstract
Background Clinical appearance and evolution of Canine Leishmaniosis (CL) are the consequence of complex interactions between the parasite and the genetic and immunological backgrounds. We investigated the effect of an immune-modulating diet in CL. Dogs were treated with anti- Leishmania pharmacological therapy combined with standard diet (SD Group) or with the immune-modulating diet (IMMD Group). CD3+ CD4+ Foxp3+ Regulatory T cells (Treg) and CD3+ CD4+ IFN-γ + T helper 1 (Th1) were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results All sick dogs showed low platelet number at diagnosis (T0). A platelet increase was observed after six months (T6) SD Group, with still remaining in the normal range at twelve months (T12). IMMD Group showed an increase in platelet number becoming similar to healthy dogs at T6 and T12. An increase of CD4/CD8 ratio was revealed in SD Group after three months (T3), while at T6 and at T12 the values resembled to T0. The increase in CD4/CD8 ratio at T3 was maintained at T6 and T12 in IMMD Group. A reduction in the percentage of Treg of all sick dogs was observed at T0. A recovery of Treg percentage was observed only at T3 in SD Group, while this effect disappeared at T6 and T12. In contrast, Treg percentage became similar to healthy animals in IMDD Group at T3, T6 and T12. Sick dogs showed an increase of Th1 cells at T0 as compared with healthy dogs. We observed the occurrence of a decrease of Th1 cells from T3 to T12 in SD Group, although a trend of increase was observed at T6 and T12. At variance, IMMD Group dogs showed a progressive decrease of Th1 cells, whose levels became similar to healthy controls at T6 and T12. Conclusion The immune-modulating diet appears to regulate the immune response in CL during the standard pharmacological treatment. The presence of nutraceuticals in the diet correlates with the decrease of Th1 cells and with the increase of Treg in sick dogs. Therefore, the administration of the specific dietary supplement improved the clinical response to the standard treatment in a model of CL.

Abstract
In confluent human dermal fibroblasts brought to quiescence (G0) by serum starvation, the S phase peaked at 24 h after serum re-addiction and G2/M phase peaked at 36 h. This was confirmed by titration of h-gas1 mRNA (a marker of G0 phase) and histone H3 (a marker of S phase). Clusterin mRNA accumulation progressively increased in cells proceeding to confluence after seeding and to quiescence upon serum starvation, and peaked at around G0, in parallel with h-gas1 mRNA. At 6 h (roughly G1 phase) clusterin transcript formed a second peak, followed by a gradual decrease until 36 h. Correspondence of clusterin protein accumulation to its mRNA occurred solely with regard to the G0 peak but not to the second one. The possible meaning of the cell cycle related clusterin gene expression is discussed.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of continuous intracerebroventricular infusion of a melanocortin 4 receptor antagonist HS014 (cyclic [AcCys11, D-Nal14, Cys18, Asp-NH2(22)]beta-MSH-(11-22)) over 12 days and a subsequent 12-day recovery period on food intake, body weight and copulatory behavior in male rats. The results show that the food intake increased immediately after the start of the infusion of HS014 (0.16 nmol/h) and progressively increased thereafter. No tachyphylaxis was observed. When the infusion of HS014 was terminated, the food-intake levels dropped. The body weights of the rats had increased by 17% by the end of the study, compared with controls. During the recovery period, the body weight decreased towards the levels of the control rats. These results indicate that overeating and the subsequent increases in body weight caused by blockage of the melanocortin 4 (MC4) receptor are reversible when the blockage is ended. We also tested the copulatory behavior of vigorous male rats in the presence of female rats in estrous. We registered mount latency, the number of mounts, the intromission latency, the number of intromissions, the ejaculation latency and the post-ejaculatory interval three times during the study and also after acute administration of HS014 and alpha-MSH. The sexual behavior of the male rats was not affected. These results indicate that the MC receptors, in particular the MC4 receptor, may not be a major mediator of effects on copulatory behavior in male rats.

Abstract
Background Oxytetracycline (OTC), which is largely employed in zootechnical and veterinary practices to ensure wellness of farmed animals, is partially absorbed within the gastrointestinal tract depositing in several tissues. Therefore, the potential OTC toxicity is relevant when considering the putative risk derived by the entry and accumulation of such drug in human and pet food chain supply. Despite scientific literature highlights several OTC-dependent toxic effects on human and animal health, the molecular mechanisms of such toxicity are still poorly understood. Methods Here, we evaluated DNA damages and epigenetic alterations by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, chromatin immuno-precipitation and Western blot analysis. Results We observed that human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) expressed DNA damage features (activation of ATM and p53, phosphorylation of H2AX and modifications of histone H3 methylation of lysine K4 in the chromatin) after the in vitro exposure to OTC. These changes are linked to a robust inflammatory response indicated by an increased expression of Interferon (IFN)-γ and type 1 superoxide dismutase (SOD1). Discussion Our data reveal an unexpected biological in vitro activity of OTC able to modify DNA and chromatin in cultured human PBMC. In this regard, OTC presence in foods of animal origin could represent a potential risk for both the human and animal health.

Abstract
Finasteride is a well-known inhibitor of the prostatic enzyme 5 alpha-reductase type 2 which prevents conversion of testosterone into 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, the active intraprostatic androgen, which causes prostate involution through a combination of cell atrophy and cell death. The drug is widely used to improve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia in man. Clusterin, a glycoprotein which is generally up-regulated under conditions inducing cell atrophy or organ involution, is produced at a high level in the regressing rat ventral prostate following androgen ablation. According to several authors, clusterin does not respond to finasteride treatment, suggesting a different action of testosterone and 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone. We show here that, under our conditions, finasteride was capable of inducing production of both clusterin mRNA and protein in the rat ventral prostate. In fact, by using different and converging techniques, such as Northern hybridization, in situ hybridization histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, we were able to show a strong induction of the clusterin gene in the epithelial cell population of the gland. The response to finasteride, which was similar to that seen with castration, occurred with a delay of a few days. In situ and immunohistochemistry experiments indicated that both orchidectomy and finasteride administration resulted in increased transition of the epithelial cells from the columnar to the cuboidal (atrophic) shape, and this was accompanied by an increased intensity of the signal for clusterin. Thus, it appears that induction of clusterin is part of the molecular process leading to prostate involution caused by either orchidectomy or finasteride administration.

Abstract
The authors examined 60 consecutive patients hospitalized in Modena University Otorhinolaryngological Clinic for vertigo by means of an interview and of three self-rating scales (Zung's SDS, SAS and the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire). The control group was composed of an equal number of patients hospitalized in the same ward and period for different nonsurgical otiatric diseases; the two groups were matched for age, sex, residential area, sociocultural conditions, duration of hospitalization and disease. According to the clinical diagnosis carried out when discharged from hospital, the patients where divided into five groups (Ménière's disease, neuronitis, vertebrobasilar insufficiency, neurosensorial deafness, nucleoreticular syndrome of Ararslan). The data regarding depression (MHQ and SDS), anxiety (MHQ and SAS), neuroticism, somatization (MHQ) and the prevailing of hysterical personality traits in women (MHQ) resulted particularly relevant from a statistical viewpoint (p less than 0.01).

Abstract
We examined 420 patients with vestibular diseases of different origin; 273 with peripheral vestibular disease and 147 with both peripheral and central vestibular disease. Recurrent vestibulopathy like Menière's disease, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, were not included. Patients were evaluated initially and 6 months after pharmacological and/or rehabilitation therapy. At the initial assessment, the head-shaking test was specific for the side of the lesion in both groups, even if spontaneous nystagmus was no longer present. Thus, head-shaking nystagmus is a physical sign that can be easily evoked and gives useful information about the presence of vestibulo-ocular reflex asymmetry. At the follow-up at 6 months, many changes in the head-shaking nystagmus were noted: in some cases it appeared, in some others it changed direction and more often it disappeared. There is actually no acceptable explanation for the disappearance of the head-shaking nystagmus, despite some evidence that vestibular compensation could play a role. It is definitely proved that sensitivity of the head-shaking test is really poor, especially in the course of time and, therefore, it should not be used alone in the follow-up of patients with vestibular disease.

Abstract
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common type of peripheral vertigo. BPPV often relapses after the first episode, with a recurrence rate between 15% and 50%. To date both the aetiopathogenetic processes that lead to otoconia detachment and the factors that make BPPV a relapsing disease are still unclear, but recent epidemiological studies have shown a possible association with cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the present study (Sesto Senso Survey) was to evaluate in the Italian population through an observational survey, the main demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with BPPV (first episode or recurrent) with particular focus on the potential cardiovascular risk factors. The survey was conducted in 158 vestibology centres across Italy on 2,682 patients (mean age 59.3 ± 15.0 years; 39.1% males and 60.9% females) suffering from BPPV, from January 2013 to December 2014. The results showed a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure (55.8%), hypercholesterolaemia (38.6%) and diabetes (17.7%), as well as a family history of cardiovascular disease (49.4%). A high percentage of patients also had hearing loss (42.9%), tinnitus (41.2%), or both (26.8%). The presence of hypertension, dyslipidaemia and pre-existing cardiovascular comorbidities were significantly related to recurrent BPPV episodes (OR range between 1.84 and 2.31). In addition, the association with diabetes and thyroid/autoimmune disease (OR range between 1.73 and 1.89) was relevant. The survey results confirm the significant association between cardiovascular comorbidities and recurrent BPPV and identify them as a potential important risk factor for recurrence of BPPV in the Italian population, paving the way for the evaluation of new therapeutic strategies in the treatment of this disease.

Abstract
Background Canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (cKCS) is an inflammatory eye condition related to a deficiency in the tear aqueous fraction. Etiopathogenesis of such disease is substantially multifactorial, combining the individual genetic background with environmental factors that contribute to the process of immunological tolerance disruption and, as a consequence, to the emergence of autoimmunity disease. In this occurrence, it is of relevance the role of the physiological immune-dysregulation that results in immune-mediated processes at the basis of cKCS. Current therapies for this ocular disease rely on immunosuppressive treatments. Clinical response to treatment frequently varies from poor to good, depending on the clinical-pathological status of eyes at diagnosis and on individual response to therapy. In the light of the variability of clinical response to therapies, we evaluated the use of an anti-inflammatory/antioxidant nutraceutical diet with potential immune-modulating activity as a therapeutical adjuvant in cKCS pharmacological treatment. Such combination was administered to a cohort of dogs affected by cKCS in which the only immunosuppressive treatment resulted poorly responsive or ineffective in controlling the ocular symptoms. Results Fifty dogs of different breeds affected by immune-mediated cKSC were equally distributed and randomly assigned to receive either a standard diet (control, n = 25) or the nutraceutical diet (treatment group, n = 25) both combined with standard immunosuppressive therapy over a 60 days period. An overall significant improvement of all clinical parameters (tear production, conjunctival inflammation, corneal keratinization, corneal pigment density and mucus discharge) and the lack of food-related adverse reactions were observed in the treatment group (p < 0.0001). Conclusions Our results showed that the association of traditional immune-suppressive therapy with the antioxidant/anti-inflammatory properties of the nutraceutical diet resulted in a significant amelioration of clinical signs and symptoms in cKSC. The beneficial effects, likely due to the presence of supplemented nutraceuticals in the diet, appeared to specifically reduce the immune-mediated ocular symptoms in those cKCS-affected dogs that were poorly responsive or unresponsive to classical immunosuppressive drugs. These data suggest that metabolic changes could affect the immune response orchestration in a model of immune-mediated ocular disease, as represented by cKSC.

Abstract
Background Work ability (WA) describes the physical and intellectual resources on which individuals can rely to respond to work demands. While several studies have investigated the protective role of work-related psychosocial factors on WA, only a few have examined differences across age cohorts. Moreover, few studies have investigated WA in the educational context and most of those did not consider preschool teachers. Aims To examine the role of psychosocial factors (support from colleagues, support from supervisors, work meaning, reward, skill discretion and autonomy) in sustaining WA among preschool teachers in different age cohorts. Methods A cross-sectional study of preschool teachers employed in the municipal educational services of a city in northwest Italy. Study subjects completed a self-reported questionnaire. Results Among the 706 study subjects, in the 35-44 age cohort, support from colleagues was positively associated with WA. In the 45-54 age cohort, WA was found to be associated with reward and skill discretion while in the 55-63 age cohort, work meaning was significantly associated with WA. Conclusions Our findings indicate that potential protective factors for WA may differ between age cohorts. They also suggest that in order to sustain WA effectively, interventions in working populations should be tailored to employees' ages.
