Changes in global terrestrial live biomass over the 21st century

Live woody vegetation is the largest reservoir of biomass carbon, with its restoration considered one of the most effective natural climate solutions. However, terrestrial carbon fluxes remain the largest uncertainty in the global carbon cycle. Here, we develop spatially explicit estimates of carbon stock changes of live woody biomass from 2000 to 2019 using measurements from ground, air, and space. We show that live biomass has removed 4.9 to 5.5 PgC year^-1 from the atmosphere, offsetting 4.6 ± 0.1 PgC year^-1 of gross emissions from disturbances and adding substantially (0.23 to 0.88 PgC year^-1) to the global carbon stocks. Gross emissions and removals in the tropics were four times larger than temperate and boreal ecosystems combined. Although live biomass is responsible for more than 80% of gross terrestrial fluxes, soil, dead organic matter, and lateral transport may play important roles in terrestrial carbon sink.

Delineating managed land for reporting national greenhouse gas emissions and removals to the United Nations framework convention on climate change

Land use and management activities have a substantial impact on carbon stocks and associated greenhouse gas emissions and removals. However, it is challenging to discriminate between anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic sources and sinks from land. To address this problem, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change developed a managed land proxy to determine which lands are contributing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Governments report all emissions and removals from managed land to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change based on this proxy, and policy interventions to reduce emissions from land use are expected to focus on managed lands. Our objective was to review the use of the managed land proxy, and summarize the criteria that governments have applied to classify land as managed and unmanaged. We found that the large majority of governments are not reporting on their application of the managed land proxy. Among the governments that do provide information, most have assigned all area in specific land uses as managed, while designating all remaining lands as unmanaged. This designation as managed land is intuitive for croplands and settlements, which would not exist without management interventions, but a portion of forest land, grassland, and wetlands may not be managed in a country. Consequently, Brazil, Canada and the United States have taken the concept further and delineated managed and unmanaged forest land, grassland and wetlands, using additional criteria such as functional use of the land and accessibility of the land to anthropogenic activity. The managed land proxy is imperfect because reported emissions from any area can include non-anthropogenic sources, such as natural disturbances. However, the managed land proxy does make reporting of GHG emissions and removals from land use more tractable and comparable by excluding fluxes from areas that are not directly influenced by anthropogenic activity. Moreover, application of the managed land proxy can be improved by incorporating additional criteria that allow for further discrimination between managed and unmanaged land.

Resorption von J131-markierten Fetten und radioaktivem Vitamin B12

Es wurden 25 normale Versuchspatienten und 13 Fälle mit einem Malabsorptionssyndrom untersucht. Davon litten 9 Patienten an einer idiopathischen Steatorrhoe, 2 Patienten an einer Darmtuberkulose und 2 Patienten an einer chronischen Pankreatitis.

Die Ergebnisse der chemischen Methoden zum Nachweis der Fettresorption (Fettbilanz, Fett- und Glukosebelastungstest, Karotinspiegel) wurden mit jenen der Radioisotopenmethoden (Blutkurven nach J131-Triolein und J131-Fettsäure und Urinausscheidung von Co58-Vitamin B12) verglichen.

Bei 5 Fällen einer nicht behandelten primären Steatorrhoe war der Verlauf der Blutkurven bei Verwendung von radioaktiven Fetten flach, normalisierte sich jedoch nach Diät- und Prednisonbehandlung. Bei 2 Fällen mit chronischer Pankreatitis wurde eine abnormale Resorption des J131-Trioleins und normale Werte für J131-Fettsäure beobachtet. Die 3 Fälle mit dekompensierter Leberzirrhose und die 2 Patienten mit chronischer Cholezystitis zeigten normale Blutwerte.

Der Schillingtest (Co58-Vitamin B12) war zur Klärung eines Malabsorptionssyndroms nicht aufschlußreich. Es wäre lohnend, den Resorptionsmechanismus des Vitamin B12 weiter zu untersuchen.

Es bestand eine gute Korrelation zwischen den chemischen und Radioisotopenmethoden, sowie auch zwischen der klinischen Besserung der Patienten und den eben beschriebenen Testen. Unsere Beobachtungen stimmten im allgemeinen mit denen anderer Autoren überein.

Der Blutspiegel des fettgebundenen J131 charakterisiert ausschließlich die Transportphase des Stoffwechselsystems der Fette. Trotzdem bietet die Anwendung von markierten Fetten eine leichte und reproduzierbare Möglichkeit, normale Fälle von Patienten mit einer gröberen Fettresorptionsstörung zu unterscheiden, sowie auch einen Verdauungs- von einem Resorptionsdefekt abzugrenzen.

Die weitere Anwendung markierter Fette könnte sowohl bei normalen als auch bei pathologischen Fällen einen tieferen Einblick in den Fettstoffwechsel gewähren.
