Electric-Field-Induced Assembly of an Ionic Liquid-Water Interphase Enables Efficient Heavy Metal Electrosorption

Controlling ion desolvation, transport, and charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI) is critical to enable the rational design of the efficient and selective separation of targeted heavy metals and the decontamination of industrial wastewater. The main challenge is to sufficiently resolve and interrogate the desolvation of solvated metal ions and their subsequent electroreduction at the EEI and establish pathways to modulate these intermediate steps to achieve efficient energy transfer for targeted reactive separations. Herein, we obtained a predictive understanding of modulating the desolvation and electrosorption of Pb2+ cations using the hydrophobic ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIMCl) in aqueous electrolyte. We revealed the formation of a compact interphase layer consisting of EMIMCl-Pb complexes under an applied electric field using operando electrochemical Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements combined with classical molecular dynamics simulations. A lower negative potential was shown to result in the formation of a well-oriented layer with the positive imidazolium ring of EMIMCl lying perpendicular to the electrode and the hydrophobic alkyl chain extending into the bulk electrolyte. This oriented layer, which formed from a dilute concentration of EMIMCl added to the electrolyte, was demonstrated to facilitate desolvation of incoming solvated Pb2+ cations and decrease the charge transfer resistance for Pb electrodeposition, which has important implications for the selective removal of Pb from contaminated mixtures. Overall, our findings open up new opportunities to modulate ion desolvation using hydrophobic ionic liquids in aqueous electrolytes for efficient heavy-metal separation.

Influence of surface and intermolecular interactions on the properties of supported polyoxometalates

Polyoxometalates (POMs) with localized radical or open-shell metal sites have the potential to be used as transformative electronic spin based molecular qubits (MQs) for quantum computing (QC). For practical applications, MQs have to be immobilized in electronically or optically addressable arrays which introduces interactions with supports as well as neighboring POMs. Herein, we synthesized Keggin POMs with both tungsten (W) and vanadium (V) addenda atoms. Ion soft landing, a highly-controlled surface modification technique, was used to deliver mass-selected V-doped POMs to different self-assembled monolayer surfaces on gold (SAMs) without the solvent, counterions, and contaminants that normally accompany deposition from solution. Alkylthiol, perfluorinated, and carboxylic-acid terminated monolayers were employed as representative model supports on which different POM-surface and POM-POM interactions were characterized. We obtained insights into the vibrational properties of supported V-doped POMs and how they are perturbed by interactions with specific surface functional groups using infrared reflection absorption and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy, as well as tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Different functional groups on SAMs and nanoscale heterogeneity are both shown to modulate the observed spectroscopic signatures. Spectral shifts are also found to be dependent on POM-POM interactions. The electronic structure of the V-doped POMs was determined in the gas phase using negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and on surfaces with scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. The chemical functionality and charge transfer properties of the SAMs are demonstrated to exert an influence on the charge state and electronic configuration of supported V-doped POMs. The geometric and electronic structure of the POMs were also calculated using density functional theory. Our joint experimental and theoretical findings provide insight into how V substitution as well as POM-surface and POM-POM interactions influence the vibrational properties of POMs.

Coordination-Dependent Chemical Reactivity of TFSI Anions at a Mg Metal Interface

Charge transfer across the electrode-electrolyte interface is a highly complex and convoluted process involving diverse solvated species with varying structures and compositions. Despite recent advances in in situ and operando interfacial analysis, molecular specific reactivity of solvated species is inaccessible due to a lack of precise control over the interfacial constituents and/or an unclear understanding of their spectroscopic fingerprints. However, such molecular-specific understanding is critical to the rational design of energy-efficient solid-electrolyte interphase layers. We have employed ion soft landing, a versatile and highly controlled method, to prepare well-defined interfaces assembled with selected ions, either as solvated species or as bare ions, with distinguishing molecular precision. Equipped with precise control over interfacial composition, we employed in situ multimodal spectroscopic characterization to unravel the molecular specific reactivity of Mg solvated species comprising (i.e., bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, TFSI^-) anions and solvent molecules (i.e., dimethoxyethane, DME/G1) on a Mg metal surface relevant to multivalent Mg batteries. In situ multimodal spectroscopic characterization revealed higher reactivity of the undercoordinated solvated species [Mg-TFSI-G1]⁺ compared to the fully coordinated [Mg-TFSI-(G1)₂]⁺ species or even the bare TFSI^-. These results were corroborated by the computed reaction pathways and energy barriers for decomposition of the TFSI^- within Mg solvated species relative to bare TFSI^-. Finally, we evaluated the TFSI reactivity under electrochemical conditions using Mg(TFSI)₂-DME-based phase-separated electrolytes representing different solvated constituents. Based on our multimodal study, we report a detailed understanding of TFSI^- decomposition processes as part of coordinated solvated species at a Mg-metal anode that will aid the rational design of improved sustainable electrochemical energy technologies.

Synthesis and Stability of Mixed-Diphosphine Ligated Gold Clusters

Sub-nanometer gold clusters are promising size- and composition-tunable materials that may be used for advanced technological applications such as catalysis, energy generation, and microelectronics. Synthesis and characterization of phosphine ligated gold clusters containing different ligands provide insight into how steric and electronic effects resulting from changes in chemical functionality influence cluster size, stability, and formation in solution. Herein, we demonstrate that synthesizing gold clusters using two different diphosphines in solution at the same time results in a broad distribution of novel mixed-ligand clusters. In comparison, adding a second diphosphine to a solution of gold clusters presynthesized with another diphosphine does not result in extensive formation of mixed-ligand species. Utilizing high-mass resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, we determined novel cluster compositions and observed size-dependent trends in gold clusters that undergo ligand exchange forming mixed diphosphine species. Adjacent peaks in the mass spectra, separated by characteristic mass-to-charge ratios, provide evidence for multiple 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (L³) and 1,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane (L⁵) ligands on cationic clusters containing 8, 10, 11, and 22 gold atoms. Energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation experiments provide qualitative insight into how different diphosphine ligands affect the relative stability of specific size gold clusters. Our results indicate that mixed-ligand clusters containing both L³ and L⁵ are generally more stable than their single ligand counterparts containing either L³ or L⁵. These molecular-level insights will facilitate the rational and scalable synthesis of gold clusters for targeted applications.

Integrated photoelectrochemical energy storage cells prepared by benchtop ion soft landing

The exceptional photochromic and redox properties of polyoxometalate anions, PW₁₂O₄₀³⁻, have been exploited to develop an integrated photoelectrochemical energy storage cell for conversion and storage of solar energy. Elimination of strongly coordinating cations using benchtop ion soft landing leads to a ∼370% increase in the maximum power output of the device. Additionally, the photocathode displayed a pronounced color change from clear to blue upon irradiation, which warrants the potential application of the IPES cell in advanced smart windows and photochromic lenses.

Soft landing eliminates counter cations from Keggin polyoxometalate-based photocathodes, resulting in a ∼370% increase in maximum power output from a novel device that simultaneously harvests and stores solar energy.

Tuning the Charge and Hydrophobicity of Graphene Oxide Membranes by Functionalization with Ionic Liquids at Epoxide Sites

Functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) membranes is generally achieved using carboxyl groups as binding sites for ligands. Herein, by taking advantage of the ability of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) to undergo an epoxide ring-opening reaction, a new approach of GO modification was established, in which ILs were bonded to the abundant epoxides on GO without sacrificing the carboxyl groups. Computational methods confirmed this unique configuration of ILs on GO, which enabled the dispersion of IL/GO flakes in water for facile casting into laminate membranes. Compared with neat GO, the ILs in IL/GO membranes served as spacers that substantially reduced the multi-valent cation mobility, simultaneously facilitated ion desolvation, and increased the water flux across the membrane. Our studies found that the higher separation efficiency of IL/GO membranes may be attributed to the synergistic modification of the hydrophobicity and surface charge. Specifically, the protonated nitrogen of the imidazolium cations altered the surface charge of GO, thereby generating electrostatic repulsion that enhanced the selectivity of cation rejection. On the other hand, the increased length of the alkyl chains bound to the imidazolium rings was found to increase the hydrophobicity of GO, which, in turn, aided the fine-tuning of the water desolvation/transport dynamics at the GO/IL interface to achieve a high water flux. Additionally, the water retention was reduced on the hydrophobic planes, which inhibited GO swelling during aqueous separations. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed increased water diffusivity when ILs were intercalated within GO layers. We establish that without requiring a high energy input, functionalization of GO membranes with ILs may be a promising approach to achieve efficient ion separation and critical material recovery.

Role of Polysulfide Anions in Solid-Electrolyte Interphase Formation at the Lithium Metal Surface in Li-S Batteries

Delineating intricate interactions between highly reactive Li-metal electrodes and the diverse constituents of battery electrolytes has been a long-standing scientific challenge in materials design for advanced energy storage devices. Here, we isolated lithium polysulfide anions (LiS₄^-) from an electrolyte solution based on their mass-to-charge ratio and deposited them on Li-metal electrodes under clean vacuum conditions using ion soft landing (ISL), a highly controlled interface preparation technique. The molecular level precision in the construction of these model interfaces with ISL, coupled with in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio theoretical calculations, allowed us to obtain unprecedented insight into the parasitic reactions of well-defined polysulfides on Li-metal electrodes. Our study revealed that the oxide-rich surface layer, which is amenable to direct electron exchange, drives multielectron sulfur oxidation (S⁰ → S⁶⁺) processes. Our results have substantial implications for the rational design of future Li-S batteries with improved efficiency and durability.

Insights into Spontaneous Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation at Magnesium Metal Anode Surface from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Spontaneous chemical reactivity at multivalent (Mg, Ca, Zn, Al) electrode surfaces is critical to solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, and hence, directly affects the longevity of batteries. Here, we report an investigation of the reactivity of 0.5 M Mg(TFSI)₂ in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) solvent at a Mg(0001) surface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and detailed Bader charge analysis. Based on the simulations, the initial degradation reactions of the electrolyte strongly depend on the structure of the Mg(TFSI)₂ species near the anode surface. At the surface, the dissociation of Mg(TFSI)₂ species occurs via cleavage of the N-S bond for the solvent separated ion pair (SSIP) and via cleavage of the C-S bond for the contact ion pair (CIP) configuration. In the case of the CIP, both TFSI anions undergo spontaneous bond dissociation reactions to form atomic O, C, S, F, and N species adsorbed on the surface of the Mg anode. These products indicate that the initial SEI layer formed on the surface of the pristine Mg anode consists of a complex mixture of multiple components such as oxides, carbides, sulfides, fluorides, and nitrides. We believe that the atomic-level insights gained from these simulations will lay the groundwork for the rational design of tailored and functional interphases that are critical for the success of multivalent battery technology.

Graphene Oxide as a Pb(II) Separation Medium: Has Part of the Story Been Overlooked?

A key problem associated with the design of graphene oxide (GO) materials and their tuning for nanoscale separations is how specific functional groups influence the competitive adsorption of solvated ions and water at liquid/graphene interfaces. Computation accompanied by experiment shows that OH and COOH exert an influence on water adsorption properties stronger than that of O and H functional groups. The COO- anions, following COOH deprotonation, stabilize Pb(II) through strong electrostatic interactions. This suggests that, among the functional groups under study, COOH offers the best Pb(II) adsorption capacity and the ability to regenerate the sorbent through a pH swing. In line with computation, striking experimental observations revealed that a substantial increase in Pb(II) adsorption occurs with increasing pH. Our findings provide a systematic framework for controlled design and implementation of regenerable C-based sorbents used in separations and desalination.

Ion Mobility Spectrometry Characterization of the Intermediate Hydrogen-Containing Gold Cluster Au7(PPh3)7H52

We employ ion mobility spectrometry and density functional theory to determine the structure of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ (PPh₃ = triphenylphosphine), which was recently identified by high mass resolution mass spectrometry. Experimental ion-neutral collision cross sections represent the momentum transfer between the ionic clusters and gas molecules averaged over the relative thermal velocities of the colliding pair, thereby providing structural insights. Theoretical calculations indicate the geometry of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ is similar to Au₇(PPh₃)₇⁺, with three hydrogen atoms bridging two gold atoms and two hydrogen atoms forming single Au-H bonds. Collision-induced dissociation products observed during IMS experiments reveal that smaller hydrogen-containing clusters may be produced through fragmentation of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺. Our findings indicate that hydrogen-containing species like Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ act as intermediates in the formation of larger phosphine ligated gold clusters. These results advance the understanding and ability to control the mechanisms of size-selective cluster formation, which is necessary for scalable synthesis of clusters with tailored properties.

ESI-MS Identification of the Cationic Phosphine-Ligated Gold Clusters Au1-22: Insight into the Gold-Ligand Ratio and Abundance of Larger Clusters

Triphenylphosphine (PPh₃)-ligated gold nanoclusters are valuable for a number of potential applications due to their relative ease of synthesis and usefulness in forming advanced cluster architectures. While previous studies have reported cationic PPh₃-ligated gold clusters with core sizes of Au_1-4, Au_6-11, and Au_13-14, there has not been definitive identification by mass spectrometry of many larger clusters in the Au_12-25 range. Herein, we survey a polydisperse solution of cationic PPh₃-ligated gold clusters using high-mass-resolution (M/ΔM = 60,000) electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). To improve the sensitivity and mass resolution of larger clusters for unambiguous identification, we increased the number of scan averages and reduced the range of mass collection windows to 200 m/z, thereby mitigating potential mass and ion abundance bias resulting from smaller "building block" gold clusters that are present in much higher abundance in solution. In addition to the previously reported clusters, we identify several new species including Au₅(PPh₃)₅⁺, Au₁₂(PPh₃)₉HCl²⁺, Au₁₅(PPh₃)₉Cl²⁺, Au₁₆(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₂²⁺, Au₁₇(PPh₃)₁₁³⁺, Au₁₈(PPh₃)₁₀²⁺, Au₁₉(PPh₃)₁₀Cl²⁺, Au₂₀(PPh₃)₁₂H₃³⁺, Au₂₁(PPh₃)₁₀Cl²⁺, and Au₂₂(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₂²⁺, indicating that a full range of clusters between Au_1-22 may be observed in a single polydisperse solution. Considering all of the clusters observed, our findings provide evidence that the Au_12-14 size range is a critical transition point in cluster nucleation. While smaller clusters exhibit a 1:1 gold-to-ligand ratio, larger clusters (beginning Au_12-14) feature additional gold atoms without an equal number of accompanying ligands. Our results support previous evidence in the literature indicating that the "magic number" icosahedral Au₁₃ geometry is the smallest cluster size where a ligand-less central gold atom is coordinated by a complete shell of 12 surrounding ligated gold atoms, thereby creating a stable "one-shell" cluster. Furthermore, our findings reinforce growing evidence that ligands may be used to actively direct gold cluster size and abundance during synthesis. While for PPh₃-ligated systems the most abundant species are Au_6-9 clusters, we find that for related methyldiphenylphosphine (PPh₂Me) and dimethylphenylphosphine (PPhMe₂)-ligated systems the most abundant cluster sizes are Au_10-11 and Au_12-14, respectively. Together, we demonstrate that reducing the range of m/z collection windows and increasing the number of scan averages dramatically improves instrument sensitivity for cationic gold clusters, enabling thorough characterization of polydisperse solutions that is not possible using conventional techniques.

Simplified Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics-Based Raman Spectral Simulations

We describe a simplified approach to simulating Raman spectra from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations. The protocol relies on on-the-fly calculations of approximate molecular polarizabilities using the well-known sum over orbitals (as opposed to states) method. This approach bypasses the more accurate but computationally expensive approach to calculating molecular polarizabilities along AIMD trajectories, i.e., solving the coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock/Kohn-Sham equations. We demonstrate the advantages and limitations of our method through a few case studies targeting molecular systems of interest to surface- and/or tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy practitioners.

Mapping Localized Peroxyl Radical Generation on a PEM Fuel Cell Catalyst Using Integrated Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microspectroscopy

Understanding molecular-level transformations resulting from electrochemical reactions is important in designing efficient and reliable energy technologies. In this work, a novel integrated scanning electrochemical cell microspectroscopy (iSECCMS) capability is developed by combining a high spatial resolution electrochemical scanning probe with in situ fluorescence spectroscopy. Using 6-carboxyfluorescein as a fluorescent probe, the iSECCMS platform is employed to measure the effect of the detrimental generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed at the active sites of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Carbon-supported tantalum-doped titanium oxide (TaTiOx) catalysts, a potential Pt-group-metal-free (PGM-free) cathode material explored for low temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), is used as a representative model ORR system, where generation of intermediate H2O2 instead of fully oxidized H2O is a major concern. We establish that the iSECCMS platform provides a novel and versatile capability for spatially resolved mapping of in situ ROS generation and activity during the kinetically-limited ORR and may, therefore, aid the future characterization and development of high-performance PGM-free PEFC cathodes.

The population of oomycetes in a recycled irrigation water system at a horticultural nursery in southern California

Recapture and recycling of irrigation water is often required to meet enormous water demands at horticultural nurseries. We tested four water types associated with a recycled irrigation system at a commercial container nursery in southern California for presence of oomycete plant pathogens from July 2015 to December 2017. These water types included: the main source of water originating from a reservoir, retention water from an on-site collection pond, irrigation water received by different growing areas within the nursery, and irrigation runoff captured in polyethylene sheet-lined runoff channels. The genera Phytophthora, Pythium, and Phytopythium together contributed more than 85% of the total oomycete population detected in the recycled irrigation system. The Phytophthora and Pythium genera were represented by member species from nine (1-4, 6-10) and eight (A, B, D-F, H-J) different sub-generic clades, respectively. Incoming water sourced from the reservoir was found to harbor known plant pathogens such as Phytophthora citricola-complex, P. capsici-cluster, P. tropicalis,P citrophthora-cluster, P. nemorosa-cluster, P. riparia, P. cryptogea-complex, P. parsiana-cluster, P. sp. nov. aff. kernoviae, Pythium dissotocum-complex, Py. oligandrum-cluster, Py. irregulare, and Phytopythium litorale. Runoff water showed the highest oomycete species richness and frequency of detection with both filtration and leaf baiting methods. In addition to plant pathogens, oomycete fish pathogens such as Aphanomyces laevis, Pythium chondricola-complex, Pythium flevoense-complex, and Saprolegnia diclina-complex were also detected in greater abundance in the recycled irrigation water. The oomycete species richness in the runoff water was correlated with several environmental parameters such as soil temperature. Greater oomycete richness in incoming water was associated with higher soil temperatures, whereas richness in runoff declines with increasing soil temperature, likely suggesting connections to weather-dependent nursery operations.

Structure and Stability of the Ionic Liquid Clusters [EMIM]n[BF4]n+1- (n = 1-9): Implications for Electrochemical Separations

Precise functionalization of electrodes with size-selected ionic liquid (IL) clusters may improve the application of ILs in electrochemical separations. Herein we report our combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the IL clusters 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIM]_n[BF₄]_n+1^- (n = 1-9) and demonstrate their selectivity and efficiency toward targeted adsorption of ions from solution. The structures and energies of the IL clusters, predicted with global optimization, agree with and help interpret the ion abundances and stabilities measured by high-mass-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and collision-induced dissociation experiments. The [EMIM][BF₄]₂^- cluster, which was identified as the most stable IL cluster, was selectively soft-landed onto a working electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed a lower charge transfer resistance on the soft-landed electrode containing [EMIM][BF₄]₂^- compared with an electrode prepared by drop-casting of an IL solution containing the full range of IL clusters. Our findings indicate that specific IL clusters may be used to increase the efficiency of electrochemical separations by lowering the overpotentials involved.

Controlling the Activity and Stability of Electrochemical Interfaces Using Atom-by-Atom Metal Substitution of Redox Species

Understanding the molecular-level properties of electrochemically active ions at operating electrode-electrolyte interfaces (EEI) is key to the rational development of high-performance nanostructured surfaces for applications in energy technology. Herein, an electrochemical cell coupled with ion soft landing is employed to examine the effect of "atom-by-atom" metal substitution on the activity and stability of well-defined redox-active anions, PMo _xW_{12- x}O₄₀^3- ( x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, or 12) at nanostructured ionic liquid EEI. A striking observation made by in situ electrochemical measurements and further supported by theoretical calculations is that the substitution of only one to three tungsten atoms by molybdenum atoms in the PW₁₂O₄₀^3- anions results in a substantial spike in their first reduction potential. Specifically, PMo₃W₉O₄₀^3- showed the highest redox activity in both in situ electrochemical measurements and as part of a functional redox supercapacitor device, making it a "super-active redox anion" compared with all other PMo _xW_{12- x}O₄₀^3- species. Electronic structure calculations showed that metal substitution in PMo _xW_{12- x}O₄₀^3- causes the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) to protrude locally, making it the "active site" for reduction of the anion. Several critical factors contribute to the observed trend in redox activity including (i) multiple isomeric structures populated at room temperature, which affect the experimentally determined reduction potential; (ii) substantial decrease of the LUMO energy upon replacement of W atoms with more-electronegative Mo atoms; and (iii) structural relaxation of the reduced species produced after the first reduction step. Our results illustrate a path to achieving superior performance of technologically relevant EEIs in functional nanoscale devices through understanding of the molecular-level electronic properties of specific electroactive species with "atom-by-atom" precision.

Role of sterics in phosphine-ligated gold clusters

This study examined the solution-phase exchange reactions of triphenylphosphine (PPh₃) ligands on Au₈L₇²⁺ (L = PPh₃) gold clusters with three different tolyl ligands using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to provide insight into how steric differences in the phosphines influence the extent of ligand exchange and the stability of the resulting mixed-phosphine clusters.

DRILL Interface Makes Ion Soft Landing Broadly Accessible for Energy Science and Applications

Polyoxometalates (POM) have been deposited onto carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes using benchtop ion soft landing (SL) enabled by a vortex-confined electrohydrodynamic desolvation process. The device is based on the dry ion localization and locomotion (DRILL) mass spectrometry interface of Fedorov and co-workers. By adding electrospray emitters, heating the desolvation gas, and operating at high gas flow rates, it is possible to obtain stable ion currents up to -15 nA that are ideal for deposition. Coupled with ambient ion optics, this interface enables desolvated ions to be delivered to surfaces while excluding solvent and counterions. Electron microscopy of surfaces prepared using the device reveal discrete POM and no aggregation that degrades electrode performance. Characterization of POM-coated CNT electrodes in a supercapacitor showed an energy storage capacity similar to that achieved with SL in vacuum. For solutions that produce primarily a single ion by electrospray ionization, benchtop SL offers a simpler and less costly approach for surface modification with applications in catalysis, energy storage, and beyond.

Self-organizing layers from complex molecular anions

The formation of traditional ionic materials occurs principally via joint accumulation of both anions and cations. Herein, we describe a previously unreported phenomenon by which macroscopic liquid-like thin layers with tunable self-organization properties form through accumulation of stable complex ions of one polarity on surfaces. Using a series of highly stable molecular anions we demonstrate a strong influence of the internal charge distribution of the molecular ions, which is usually shielded by counterions, on the properties of the layers. Detailed characterization reveals that the intrinsically unstable layers of anions on surfaces are stabilized by simultaneous accumulation of neutral molecules from the background environment. Different phases, self-organization mechanisms and optical properties are observed depending on the molecular properties of the deposited anions, the underlying surface and the coadsorbed neutral molecules. This demonstrates rational control of the macroscopic properties (morphology and size of the formed structures) of the newly discovered anion-based layers.

Understanding ligand effects in gold clusters using mass spectrometry

This review summarizes recent research on the influence of phosphine ligands on the size, stability, and reactivity of gold clusters synthesized in solution. Sub-nanometer clusters exhibit size- and composition-dependent properties that are unique from those of larger nanoparticles. The highly tunable properties of clusters and their high surface-to-volume ratio make them promising candidates for a variety of technological applications. However, because "each-atom-counts" toward defining cluster properties it is critically important to develop robust synthesis methods to efficiently prepare clusters of predetermined size. For decades phosphines have been known to direct the size-selected synthesis of gold clusters. Despite the preparation of numerous species it is still not understood how different functional groups at phosphine centers affect the size and properties of gold clusters. Using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) it is possible to characterize the effect of ligand substitution on the distribution of clusters formed in solution at defined reaction conditions. In addition, ligand exchange reactions on preformed clusters may be monitored using ESI-MS. Collision induced dissociation (CID) may also be employed to obtain qualitative insight into the fragmentation of mixed ligand clusters and the relative binding energies of differently substituted phosphines. Quantitative ligand binding energies and cluster stability may be determined employing surface induced dissociation (SID) in a custom-built Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR-MS). Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) based modeling of the SID data allows dissociation energies and entropy values to be extracted. The charge reduction and reactivity of atomically precise gold clusters, including partially ligated species generated in the gas-phase by in source CID, on well-defined surfaces may be explored using ion soft landing (SL) in a custom-built instrument combined with in situ time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Jointly, this multipronged experimental approach allows characterization of the full spectrum of relevant phenomena including cluster synthesis, ligand exchange, thermochemistry, surface immobilization, and reactivity. The fundamental insights obtained from this work will facilitate the directed synthesis of gold clusters with predetermined size and properties for specific applications.

Soft- and reactive landing of ions onto surfaces: Concepts and applications

Soft- and reactive landing of mass-selected ions is gaining attention as a promising approach for the precisely-controlled preparation of materials on surfaces that are not amenable to deposition using conventional methods. A broad range of ionization sources and mass filters are available that make ion soft-landing a versatile tool for surface modification using beams of hyperthermal (<100 eV) ions. The ability to select the mass-to-charge ratio of the ion, its kinetic energy and charge state, along with precise control of the size, shape, and position of the ion beam on the deposition target distinguishes ion soft landing from other surface modification techniques. Soft- and reactive landing have been used to prepare interfaces for practical applications as well as precisely-defined model surfaces for fundamental investigations in chemistry, physics, and materials science. For instance, soft- and reactive landing have been applied to study the surface chemistry of ions isolated in the gas-phase, prepare arrays of proteins for high-throughput biological screening, produce novel carbon-based and polymer materials, enrich the secondary structure of peptides and the chirality of organic molecules, immobilize electrochemically-active proteins and organometallics on electrodes, create thin films of complex molecules, and immobilize catalytically active organometallics as well as ligated metal clusters. In addition, soft landing has enabled investigation of the size-dependent behavior of bare metal clusters in the critical subnanometer size regime where chemical and physical properties do not scale predictably with size. The morphology, aggregation, and immobilization of larger bare metal nanoparticles, which are directly relevant to the design of catalysts as well as improved memory and electronic devices, have also been studied using ion soft landing. This review article begins in section 1 with a brief introduction to the existing applications of ion soft- and reactive landing. Section 2 provides an overview of the ionization sources and mass filters that have been used to date for soft landing of mass-selected ions. A discussion of the competing processes that occur during ion deposition as well as the types of ions and surfaces that have been investigated follows in section 3. Section 4 discusses the physical phenomena that occur during and after ion soft landing, including retention and reduction of ionic charge along with factors that impact the efficiency of ion deposition. The influence of soft landing on the secondary structure and biological activity of complex ions is addressed in section 5. Lastly, an overview of the structure and mobility as well as the catalytic, optical, magnetic, and redox properties of bare ionic clusters and nanoparticles deposited onto surfaces is presented in section 6.

Enhanced Raman scattering from aromatic dithiols electrosprayed into plasmonic nanojunctions

We describe surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) experiments in which molecular coverage is systematically varied from 3.8 × 10(5) to 3.8 × 10(2) to 0.38 molecules per μm(2) using electrospray deposition of ethanolic 4,4'-dimercaptostilbene (DMS) solutions. The plasmonic SERS substrate used herein consists of a well-characterized 2-dimensional (2D) array of silver nanospheres (see El-Khoury et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2014, 141, 214308), previously shown to feature uniform topography and plasmonic response, as well as intense SERS activity. When compared to their ensemble averaged analogues, the spatially and temporally averaged spectra of a single molecule exhibit several unique features including: (i) distinct relative intensities of the observable Raman-active vibrational states, (ii) more pronounced SERS backgrounds, and (iii) broader Raman lines indicative of faster vibrational dephasing. The first observation may be understood on the basis of an intuitive physical picture in which the removal of averaging over multiple molecules exposes the tensorial nature of Raman scattering. When an oriented single molecule gives rise to the recorded SERS spectra, the relative orientation of the molecule with respect to vector components of the local electric field determines the relative intensities of the observable vibrational states. Using a single molecule SERS framework, described herein, we derive a unique molecular orientation in which a single DMS molecule is isolated at a nanojunction formed between two silver nanospheres in the 2D array. The DMS molecule is found lying nearly flat with respect to the metal. The derived orientation of a single molecule at a plasmonic nanojunction is consistent with observations (ii) and (iii). In particular, a careful inspection of the temporal spectral variations along the recorded single molecule SERS time sequences reveals that the time-averaged SERS backgrounds arise from individual molecular events, marked by broadened SERS signatures. We assign the broadened spectra along the SERS time sequence--which sum up to a SERS background in the averaged spectra--to instances in which the π-framework of the DMS molecule is parallel to the metal at a classical plasmonic nanojunction. This also accounts for Raman line broadening as a result of fast vibrational dephasing, and driven by molecular reorientation at a plasmonic nanojunction. Furthermore, we report on the molecular orientation dependence of single molecule SERS enhancement factors. We find that in the case of a single DMS molecule isolated at a plasmonic nanojunction, molecular orientation may affect the derived single molecule SERS enhancement factor by up to 5 orders of magnitude. Taking both chemical effects as well as molecular orientation into account, we were able to estimate a single molecule enhancement factor of ∼10(10) in our measurements.

Soft landing of bare PtRu nanoparticles for electrochemical reduction of oxygen

Magnetron sputtering of two independent Pt and Ru targets coupled with inert gas aggregation in a modified commercial source has been combined with soft landing of mass-selected ions to prepare bare 4.5 nm diameter PtRu nanoparticles on glassy carbon electrodes with controlled size and morphology for electrochemical reduction of oxygen in solution. Employing atomic force microscopy (AFM) it is shown that the nanoparticles bind randomly to the glassy carbon electrode at a relatively low coverage of 7 × 10(4) ions μm(-2) and that their average height is centered at 4.5 nm. Scanning transmission electron microscopy images obtained in the high-angle annular dark field mode (HAADF-STEM) further confirm that the soft-landed PtRu nanoparticles are uniform in size. Wide-area scans of the electrodes using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal the presence of both Pt and Ru in atomic concentrations of ∼9% and ∼33%, respectively. Deconvolution of the high energy resolution XPS spectra in the Pt 4f and Ru 3d regions indicates the presence of both oxidized Pt and Ru. The substantially higher loading of Ru compared to Pt and enrichment of Pt at the surface of the nanoparticles is confirmed by wide-area analysis of the electrodes using time-of-flight medium energy ion scattering (TOF-MEIS) employing both 80 keV He(+) and O(+) ions. The activity of electrodes containing 7 × 10(4) ions μm(-2) of bare 4.5 nm PtRu nanoparticles toward the electrochemical reduction of oxygen was evaluated employing cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 0.1 M HClO4 and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions. In both electrolytes a pronounced reduction peak was observed during O2 purging of the solution that was not evident during purging with Ar. Repeated electrochemical cycling of the electrodes revealed little evolution in the shape or position of the voltammograms indicating high stability of the nanoparticles supported on glassy carbon. The reproducibility of the nanoparticle synthesis and deposition was evaluated by employing the same experimental parameters to prepare nanoparticles on glassy carbon electrodes on three occasions separated by several days. Surfaces with almost identical electrochemical behavior were observed with CV, demonstrating the highly reproducible preparation of bare nanoparticles using physical synthesis in the gas-phase combined with soft landing of mass-selected ions.

Gas-Phase Fragmentation Pathways of Mixed Addenda Keggin Anions: PMo12-nW nO 40 3- (n = 0-12)

We report a collision-induced dissociation (CID) investigation of the mixed addenda polyoxometalate (POM) anions, PMo(12-n)W(n)O(40)(3-) (n = 0-12). The anions were generated in solution using a straightforward single-step synthesis approach and introduced into the gas phase by electrospray ionization (ESI). Distinct differences in fragmentation patterns were observed for the range of mixed addenda POMs examined in this study. CID of molybdenum-rich anions, PMo(12-n)W(n)O(40)(3-) (n = 0-2), generates an abundant doubly charged fragment containing seven metal atoms (M) and 22 oxygen atoms (M(7)O(22)(2-)) and its complementary singly charged PM(5)O(18)(-) ion. In comparison, the doubly charged Lindqvist anion, (M(6)O(19)(2-)) and its complementary singly charged PM(6)O(21)(-) ion are the dominant fragments of Keggin POMs containing more than two tungsten atoms, PMo(12-n)W(n)O(40)(3-) (n = 3-12). The observed transition in the dissociation pathways with an increase in the number of W atoms in the POM may be attributed to the higher barrier of tungsten-rich anions towards isomerization. We present evidence that the observed distribution of Mo and W atoms in the major M(6)O(19)(2-) and M(7)O(22)(2-) fragment ions is different from that predicted by a random distribution, indicating substantial segregation of the addenda metal atoms in the POMs. Charge reduction of the triply charged precursor anion resulting in formation of doubly charged anions is also observed. This is a dominant pathway for mixed POMs having a majority (8-11) of W atoms and a minor channel for other precursors indicating a close competition between fragmentation and charge loss pathways in CID of POM anions.

Soft landing of bare nanoparticles with controlled size, composition, and morphology

Physical synthesis employing magnetron sputtering and gas aggregation in a modified commercial source has been coupled with size-selection and ion soft landing to prepare bare nanoparticles on surfaces with controlled coverage, size, composition, and morphology. Employing atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it is demonstrated that the size and coverage of nanoparticles on flat and stepped surfaces may be controlled using a quadrupole mass filter and the length of deposition, respectively. AFM shows that nanoparticles bind randomly to flat surfaces when soft landed at relatively low coverage (4 × 10(4) ions μm(-2)). On stepped surfaces at intermediate coverage (4 × 10(5) ions μm(-2)) nanoparticles bind along step edges forming extended linear chains. At the highest coverage (2 × 10(6) ions μm(-2)) nanoparticles form a continuous film on flat surfaces. On one surface with sizable defects, the presence of localized imperfections results in agglomeration of nanoparticles onto these features and formation of neighboring zones devoid of particles. Employing high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) the customized magnetron sputtering/gas aggregation source is demonstrated to produce bare single metal particles with controlled morphology as well as bimetallic alloy nanoparticles with defined core-shell structures of that are of interest to catalysis.

Cationic gold clusters ligated with differently substituted phosphines: effect of substitution on ligand reactivity and binding

Loss of substituted phosphine ligands is strongly correlated with the electron donating ability of the phosphorous lone pair. The results indicate that the relative ligand binding energies increase in the order PMe₃ < PPhMe₂ < PPh₂Me < PPh₃ < PPh₂Cy < PPhCy₂ < PCy₃.

Derivation of point of departure (PoD) estimates in genetic toxicology studies and their potential applications in risk assessment

Genetic toxicology data have traditionally been employed for qualitative, rather than quantitative evaluations of hazard. As a continuation of our earlier report that analyzed ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) and methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) dose-response data (Gollapudi et al., 2013), here we present analyses of 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea (ENU) and 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea (MNU) dose-response data and additional approaches for the determination of genetic toxicity point-of-departure (PoD) metrics. We previously described methods to determine the no-observed-genotoxic-effect-level (NOGEL), the breakpoint-dose (BPD; previously named Td), and the benchmark dose (BMD10 ) for genetic toxicity endpoints. In this study we employed those methods, along with a new approach, to determine the non-linear slope-transition-dose (STD), and alternative methods to determine the BPD and BMD, for the analyses of nine ENU and 22 MNU datasets across a range of in vitro and in vivo endpoints. The NOGEL, BMDL10 and BMDL1SD PoD metrics could be readily calculated for most gene mutation and chromosomal damage studies; however, BPDs and STDs could not always be derived due to data limitations and constraints of the underlying statistical methods. The BMDL10 values were often lower than the other PoDs, and the distribution of BMDL10 values produced the lowest median PoD. Our observations indicate that, among the methods investigated in this study, the BMD approach is the preferred PoD for quantitatively describing genetic toxicology data. Once genetic toxicology PoDs are calculated via this approach, they can be used to derive reference doses and margin of exposure values that may be useful for evaluating human risk and regulatory decision making.

In situ SIMS and IR spectroscopy of well-defined surfaces prepared by soft landing of mass-selected ions

Soft landing of mass-selected ions onto surfaces is a powerful approach for the highly-controlled preparation of materials that are inaccessible using conventional synthesis techniques. Coupling soft landing with in situ characterization using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) enables analysis of well-defined surfaces under clean vacuum conditions. The capabilities of three soft-landing instruments constructed in our laboratory are illustrated for the representative system of surface-bound organometallics prepared by soft landing of mass-selected ruthenium tris(bipyridine) dications, [Ru(bpy)3](2+) (bpy = bipyridine), onto carboxylic acid terminated self-assembled monolayer surfaces on gold (COOH-SAMs). In situ time-of-flight (TOF)-SIMS provides insight into the reactivity of the soft-landed ions. In addition, the kinetics of charge reduction, neutralization and desorption occurring on the COOH-SAM both during and after ion soft landing are studied using in situ Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR)-SIMS measurements. In situ IRRAS experiments provide insight into how the structure of organic ligands surrounding metal centers is perturbed through immobilization of organometallic ions on COOH-SAM surfaces by soft landing. Collectively, the three instruments provide complementary information about the chemical composition, reactivity and structure of well-defined species supported on surfaces.

Gas-phase synthesis of singly and multiply charged polyoxovanadate anions employing electrospray ionization and collision induced dissociation

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) combined with in-source fragmentation and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments were used to generate a wide range of singly and multiply charged vanadium oxide cluster anions including VxOy(n-) and VxOyCl(n-) ions (x = 1-14, y = 2-36, n = 1-3), protonated clusters, and ligand-bound polyoxovanadate anions. The cluster anions were produced by electrospraying a solution of tetradecavanadate, V14O36Cl(L)5 (L = Et4N(+), tetraethylammonium), in acetonitrile. Under mild source conditions, ESI-MS generates a distribution of doubly and triply charged VxOyCl(n-) and VxOyCl(L)((n-1)-) clusters predominantly containing 14 vanadium atoms as well as their protonated analogs. Accurate mass measurement using a high-resolution LTQ/Orbitrap mass spectrometer (m/Δm = 60,000 at m/z 410) enabled unambiguous assignment of the elemental composition of the majority of peaks in the ESI-MS spectrum. In addition, high-sensitivity mass spectrometry allowed the charge state of the cluster ions to be assigned based on the separation of the major from the much less abundant minor isotope of vanadium. In-source fragmentation resulted in facile formation of smaller VxOyCl((1-2)-) and VxOy ((1-2)-) anions. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments enabled systematic study of the gas-phase fragmentation pathways of the cluster anions originating from solution and from in-source CID. Surprisingly simple fragmentation patterns were obtained for all singly and doubly charged VxOyCl and VxOy species generated through multiple MS/MS experiments. In contrast, cluster anions originating directly from solution produced comparatively complex CID spectra. These results are consistent with the formation of more stable structures of VxOyCl and VxOy anions through low-energy CID. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that solution-phase synthesis of one precursor cluster anion combined with gas-phase CID is an efficient approach for the top-down synthesis of a wide range of singly and multiply charged gas-phase metal oxide cluster anions for subsequent investigations of structure and reactivity using mass spectrometry and ion spectroscopy techniques.

Surface characterization of nanomaterials and nanoparticles: Important needs and challenging opportunities

This review examines characterization challenges inherently associated with understanding nanomaterials and the roles surface and interface characterization methods can play in meeting some of the challenges. In parts of the research community, there is growing recognition that studies and published reports on the properties and behaviors of nanomaterials often have reported inadequate or incomplete characterization. As a consequence, the true value of the data in these reports is, at best, uncertain. With the increasing importance of nanomaterials in fundamental research and technological applications, it is desirable that researchers from the wide variety of disciplines involved recognize the nature of these often unexpected challenges associated with reproducible synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, including the difficulties of maintaining desired materials properties during handling and processing due to their dynamic nature. It is equally valuable for researchers to understand how characterization approaches (surface and otherwise) can help to minimize synthesis surprises and to determine how (and how quickly) materials and properties change in different environments. Appropriate application of traditional surface sensitive analysis methods (including x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies, scanning probe microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy) can provide information that helps address several of the analysis needs. In many circumstances, extensions of traditional data analysis can provide considerably more information than normally obtained from the data collected. Less common or evolving methods with surface selectivity (e.g., some variations of nuclear magnetic resonance, sum frequency generation, and low and medium energy ion scattering) can provide information about surfaces or interfaces in working environments (operando or in situ) or information not provided by more traditional methods. Although these methods may require instrumentation or expertise not generally available, they can be particularly useful in addressing specific questions, and examples of their use in nanomaterial research are presented.

Diagnostic correlation between the expression of the DNA repair enzyme N-methylpurine DNA glycosylase and esophageal adenocarcinoma onset: a retrospective pilot study

EAC in its early stages, when it can potentially be cured, is rarely symptomatic and is associated with high mortality rates because in part of late-stage diagnosis. Given that DNA repair is an important contributory factor of early-stage malignancy, our study focused on the expression of the base excision repair enzyme N-methylpurine DNA glycosylase (MPG) in EAC disease onset. MPG messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels were determined using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction from a maximum of 72 patient samples. Immunohistochemistry was further utilized for the detection of MPG protein, and semiquantitative analysis performed using an H-score approach was carried out on a total of 130 archival tissue samples of different esophageal pathologies. Nuclear localized MPG protein was detected in all nonmalignant tissues derived from the enterohepatic system, with H-score values of 3.9-5.5 ± 0.4-1.0. In cancerous tissues derived from the enterohepatic system, a 9.5-fold increase in the level of MPG mRNA expression was specifically observed in the malignant regions located within the esophagus region. Further analysis revealed a 9- and 14-fold increase in MPG mRNA expression in EAC tumor, node, metastasis stages II and III, respectively, suggesting MPG expression to correlate with EAC disease progression. Immunohistochemistry analysis further showed a sevenfold significant increase in MPG protein expression in EAC tissues. Intriguingly, there was a fivefold significant decrease in nuclear localized MPG protein expression in tissues derived from Barrett's esophagus and low-grade dysplasia. Such findings highlight a complex regulatory pattern governing DNA glycosylase base excision repair initiation, as normal tissue undergoes Barrett's metaplasia and later dedifferentiates to EAC. Indeed, disease-stage-specific alterations in the expression of MPG may highlight a potential role for MPG in determining EAC onset and thus potentially be of clinical relevance for early disease detection and increased patient survival.

TNFα from classically activated macrophages accentuates epithelial to mesenchymal transition in obliterative bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome is characterized by fibrotic obliteration of small airways which severely impairs graft function and survival after lung transplantation. Bronchial epithelial cells from the transplanted lung can undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition and this can be accentuated by activated macrophages. Macrophages demonstrate significant plasticity and change phenotype in response to their microenvironment. In this study we aimed to identify secretory products from macrophages that might be therapeutic targets for limiting the inflammatory accentuation of epithelial to mesenchymal transition in bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. TNFα, IL-1β and IL-8 are elevated in bronchoalveolar lavage from lung transplant patients prior to diagnosis of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. Classically activated macrophages secrete more TNFα and IL-1β than alternatively activated macrophages and dramatically accentuate TGF-β1-driven epithelial to mesenchymal transition in bronchial epithelial cells isolated from lung transplant patients. Blocking TNFα, but not IL-1β, inhibits the accentuation of epithelial to mesenchymal transition. In a pilot unblinded therapeutic intervention in five patients with progressive bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, anti-TNFα treatment improved forced expiratory volume in 1 second and 6-min walk distances in four patients. Our data identify TNFα as a potential new therapeutic target in bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome deserving of a randomized placebo controlled clinical trial.

Quantitative approaches for assessing dose-response relationships in genetic toxicology studies

Genetic toxicology studies are required for the safety assessment of chemicals. Data from these studies have historically been interpreted in a qualitative, dichotomous "yes" or "no" manner without analysis of dose-response relationships. This article is based upon the work of an international multi-sector group that examined how quantitative dose-response relationships for in vitro and in vivo genetic toxicology data might be used to improve human risk assessment. The group examined three quantitative approaches for analyzing dose-response curves and deriving point-of-departure (POD) metrics (i.e., the no-observed-genotoxic-effect-level (NOGEL), the threshold effect level (Td), and the benchmark dose (BMD)), using data for the induction of micronuclei and gene mutations by methyl methanesulfonate or ethyl methanesulfonate in vitro and in vivo. These results suggest that the POD descriptors obtained using the different approaches are within the same order of magnitude, with more variability observed for the in vivo assays. The different approaches were found to be complementary as each has advantages and limitations. The results further indicate that the lower confidence limit of a benchmark response rate of 10% (BMDL(10) ) could be considered a satisfactory POD when analyzing genotoxicity data using the BMD approach. The models described permit the identification of POD values that could be combined with mode of action analysis to determine whether exposure(s) below a particular level constitutes a significant human risk. Subsequent analyses will expand the number of substances and endpoints investigated, and continue to evaluate the utility of quantitative approaches for analysis of genetic toxicity dose-response data.

Charge retention by gold clusters on surfaces prepared using soft landing of mass selected ions

Monodisperse gold clusters have been prepared on surfaces in different charge states through soft landing of mass-selected ions. Ligand-stabilized gold clusters were prepared in methanol solution by reduction of chloro(triphenylphosphine)gold(I) with borane tert-butylamine complex in the presence of 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane. Electrospray ionization was used to introduce the clusters into the gas phase, and mass selection was employed to isolate a single ionic cluster species (Au(11)L(5)(3+), L = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane), which was delivered to surfaces at well-controlled kinetic energies. Using in situ time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), it is demonstrated that the Au(11)L(5)(3+) cluster retains its 3+ charge state when soft landed onto the surface of a 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol self-assembled monolayer (FSAM) on gold. In contrast, when deposited onto 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (COOH-SAM) and 1-dodecanethiol (HSAM) surfaces on gold, the clusters exhibit larger relative abundances of the 2+ and 1+ charge states, respectively. The kinetics of charge reduction on the FSAM and HSAM surfaces are investigated using in situ Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) SIMS. It is shown that an extremely slow interfacial charge reduction occurs on the FSAM surface while an almost instantaneous neutralization takes place on the surface of the HSAM. Our results demonstrate that the size and charge state of small gold clusters on surfaces, both of which exert a dramatic influence on their chemical and physical properties, may be tuned through soft landing of mass-selected ions onto carefully selected substrates.
