Abstract
OBJECTIVE Intractable hematuria is a leading critical problem occurring in patients with advanced stage bladder cancer (BCa) that are not suitable for radical cystectomy. The present study, for the first time in the literature, aimed to compare the effectiveness of intravesical formalin (IF) and superselective vesical artery embolization (SVAE) in the management of intractable and life-threatening hematuria in BCa patients. METHODS The retrospective study included 40 BCa patients who underwent SVAE or IF treatment due to intractable hematuria after failure of other methods. Patients were divided into two groups based on the procedures administered: SVEA Group (n = 24) and IF Group (n = 16). RESULTS The success rate at first-line therapy was 50% (12/24) in SVAE Group and 82% (13/16) in IF Group (p = 0.046). Based on the success rates at first- and second-line therapies, the overall success rate in SVAE Group was 75% and this rate was similar to that of IF Group (p = 0.439). Complication rate was significantly higher in IF patients than in SVAE patients (37.5% vs. 8.3; p = 0.024), whereas duration of postoperative hospital stay was significantly longer in SVAE Group (15.8 vs. 6 days; p = 0.041). CONCLUSION The advantages of IF appear to include shorter postoperative hospital stays and higher success rates at a single session, while the advantages of SVAE seem to include non-requirement of spinal/general anesthesia, easy repeatability, and low complication rates. In the management of patients with intractable hematuria, patients' general condition, comorbidities, and anesthesia-related risks should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the diagnostic efficiency of systemic immune response (SII) in prostate cancer (PCa) in patients with PSA < 10 ng/mL undergoing fusion prostate biopsy. METHODS The prospective study included patients who were planned for fusion prostate biopsy and had PSA < 10 ng/mL and a PI-RADS ≥ 3. All the patients underwent 12-core standard transrectal prostate biopsy followed targeted biopsy (combined biopsy). Based on preoperative complete blood count parameters, SII was calculated using the following formula: SII = platelet × neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. Correlations between PI-RADS score, platelet, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, PSA, PSA density, SII and PCa were determined using ROC curve analysis. Optimal cut-off values were determined using the maximum Youden Index (defined as: sensitivity + specificity - 1). RESULTS The study included 508 patients with a mean age of 62.49 ± 6.86 years and a median PSA level of 7.28 (5.69-8.70) ng/mL. The overall clinically significant PCa rate was 39.4%. Although SII had no significant diagnostic value in PCa patients with low ISUP grades (grade 1 and 2) (AUC = 0.487, P = 0.622), it was revealed as a significant marker in PCa patients with an ISUP grade ≥ 3 (AUC = 0.811, P < 0.001). The cut-off value of SII was 533.0. While the combination of SII with PI-RADS score is the most effective marker, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet were also revealed as effective markers in predicting ISUP grade 3-5 PCa, though not as effective as SII. CONCLUSION SII and SII combination with PI-RADS score appear to be a significant diagnostic marker in patients with high-grade PCa (ISUP grade 3-5). These values were found to be higher compared to those of patients with a benign pathology and patients with lower ISUP scores.

Abstract
Pararectal splenosis is an extremely rare lesion caused by ectopic auto-transplantation of splenic tissue after splenic trauma or splenectomy. It is often asymptomatic and detected incidentally during radiologic evaluation. We present a 24-year-old male with pararectal splenosis. The patient had a history of splenectomy and presented with complaints of abdominal discomfort and chronic constipation. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple well-enhanced masses located in the abdominal cavity and one mass in pararectal area. Additionally, the pararectal lesion showed diffusion restriction on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI). In this case report, we aim to highlight the significance of taking a detailed medical history; and using DW-MRI for diagnosis of splenosis by presenting a case in a rare location.

Abstract
Increased risk of pancreatic cancer may be associated with consumption of sugar containing foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of peach nectar containing high fructose corn sirup (HFCS) consumption in a pancreatic carcinogenesis rat model induced by 7,12-Dimethyl benzanthracene (DMBA). Fifty-day-old male Sprague Dawley rats were fed with peach nectar containing HFCS + chow, peach nectar containing sucrose + chow and only chow. After 8 mo, feeding period, each group was divided into two subgroups, in which the rats were implanted with DMBA and no DMBA (sham). Histologic specimens were evaluated according to the routine tissue processing protocol. The animals with ad libitum access to pn-HFCS, pn-sucrose and chow (only) showed significant differences in chow consumption and glucose level. Necropsy and histopathologic findings showed tumor formation in the entire group treated with DMBA. Excluding one rat in chow group, which was classified as poorly differentiated type, the others were classified as moderately differentiated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). This study demonstrated that daily intake of HFCS did not increase body weight and there was no effect of peach nectar consumption on the development of PDAC induced by DMBA in rats.

Abstract
Aims Our aim was to compare three different voxel sizes of CBCT images for the determination of residual filling material volume in root canals when compared with micro CT. Material and Methods Forty-two root canals of 14 extracted human maxillary molar teeth were retreated by using ProFile® instruments. Images were obtained after retreatment by using ProMax 3D Max CBCT at 3 different voxel sizes (1) High resolution (0.1 mm); (2) High definition (0.15 mm); and (3) Normal resolution (0.2 mm). Two observers measured volumes of residual filling materials in exported CBCT images by means of 3D Doctor Software. Micro CT measurements were served as gold standard. Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Test were used for the comparison of CBCT and micro CT measurements. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results No statistically differences were found between the two observers for all measurements (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences among different CBCT voxel sizes used (0.1 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.2 mm) (P > 0.05). The Spearman correlation coefficients between CBCT at different voxel sizes significantly highly correlated with micro CT measurements for each observer (P < 0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the measurements obtained by the two observers in consideration to root canal location (P > 0.05). Conclusion CBCT images may provide useful information in the volumetric assessment of the amount of residual filling material in root canals for retreatment procedures.

Abstract
Vitamin B12 deficiency causes haematological, gastrointestinal, psychiatric and neurological diseases. Subacute combined degeneration (SCD) of the spinal cord, characterised by degeneration of the lateral and posterior columns, is often found due to vitamin B12 deficiency. We report SCD occurring in a 57-year-old man who presented with a 2.5-month history of gradually progressing tingling in the fingers and toes and neck ache. Laboratory data revealed vitamin B12 deficiency and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the cervical spinal cord demonstrated abnormal hyperintense signal changes on T2-weighted imaging of the posterior columns. In our case, follow-up MR imaging findings correlated well with clinical outcome after treatment with vitamin B12 supplements. Neurological symptoms in vitamin B12 deficiency are frequent. Early spinal MR imaging assists in the early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Th1 cytokines, IL-2 and IFN-gamma , have critical importance in the CD4 cell driven antimycobacterial activity. Th2 type immune response is a characteristic feature of atopic disorders. Th1 and Th2 cells have been reported to negatively cross-regulate each other in vitro and in experimental animals. Our aim in the present study is to determine whether the atopy affects radiological extent of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and disease severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 82 male patients with pulmonary TB were prospectively enrolled in the study between March 2005 and March 2006. All patients were evaluated for atopic symptoms and TB related systemic symptoms. Radiological dissemination was scored and cavitation was noted. The skin prick test (SPT) was performed and serum total IgE level was measured. RESULTS The SPTs were positive in 28 of 82 (34.1 %) patients. There was no distinction between SPT-positive and negative patients in terms of pulmonary cavitation and radiological dissemination. The median IgE level of moderate-severe radiologically disseminated TB patients was significantly higher than that of mild radiologically disseminated TB patients (130 IU/ml vs. 58 IU/ml). Cavitary TB patients had also significantly higher median IgE levels (78 IU/ml vs. 46 IU/ml) (p < 0.05) CONCLUSION This study suggests that SPT-positivity and atopic respiratory phenotype do not affect the formation of cavitation, radiological dissemination and systemic symptoms of pulmonary TB. The high level of IgE in patients with cavitary and radiologically disseminated TB may be a consequence of a dysregulated immune response to infection or reflect disease activity.

Abstract
Inside attendants are medical staff who accompany patients during hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) is a well-known consequence of hyperbaric exposure. The aim of this study was to evaluate DON in inside attendants using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The bilateral shoulder, hip and knee joints of 12 inside attendants (four men, eight women; mean age 29 years; age range 22 - 36 years) were investigated. The mean +/- SD duration of employment as an inside attendant was 3.8 +/- 3.0 years (range 1 - 9 years) and the mean +/- SD number of hyperbaric exposures was 198 +/- 267 (median 96; range 30 - 950). None of the inside attendants had a history of decompression sickness. The MRIs of the attendants did not reveal bone lesions consistent with DON. This study failed to find an increased risk for DON in inside attendants. Additional multicentre epidemiological studies are warranted to investigate the occupational safety of inside attendants.

OBJECTIVE To present the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of spinal split-cord malformation (SCM) and to investigate the various types of congenital spinal disorders associated with SCM. MATERIALS AND METHODS MR examinations of 23 patients with SCM were carried out in our hospital between June 2002 and May 2007 and retrospectively analysed. RESULTS Nineteen (82.6%) patients were diagnosed as type I SCM, while four (17.4%) were diagnosed as type II SCM. The most commonly involved site of SCM was the dorsolumbar area (47.8%) while cervical involvement was the least common (4.3%). No accompanying congenital spinal disorders were detected in four patients (17.4%). In 19 patients (82.6%), congenital spinal disorders accompanying SCM were detected, the most common of which was a low-lying cord, found in 14 patients (60.9%). Other anomalies included hydromyelia in seven patients (30.4%), lipoma in six (26%), meningomyelocele in four (17.4%), thick filum in three (13%) and dermoid cyst in three (13%). CONCLUSION In preoperative planning for SCM, its characteristics and those of the accompanying anomalies should be determined. MRI is a valuable tool for making such determinations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between tuberculous meningitis and tuberculous otomastoiditis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Meningeal involvement sites were investigated by magnetic resonance imaging in 32 patients (21 males, 11 females) who had previously been diagnosed with tuberculous meningitis. Clinical and laboratory findings and responses to anti-tuberculous treatment were evaluated, and the presence of concomitant tuberculous otomastoiditis was also investigated. RESULTS The meningeal involvement site was unilateral (in the sylvian fissure and the perimesencephalic cistern) in 28 patients (87.5 per cent), and bilateral and widespread in four patients (12.5 per cent). Tuberculous otomastoiditis was found in 11 of the patients with tuberculous meningitis (34.3 per cent). Otomastoiditis was on the same side as the meningeal involvement in nine of these 11 patients. Bilateral otomastoiditis with meningeal involvement was observed in two patients. CONCLUSIONS Tuberculous meningitis is frequently accompanied by otomastoiditis, although the exact causal relationship between the two conditions is unclear. Since meningitis is a serious clinical condition, concomitant otomastoiditis generally remains unrecognised. Tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with otitis or otomastoiditis who do not respond to antibiotic therapy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2 using immunohistochemistry in the ascites syndrome of broiler chickens in a salt-induced experimental model. The presence of the enzymes in the lung, heart, liver, kidney and brain was evaluated semi-quantitatively with the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase (Strep-ABC) method using commercially available primary monoclonal antibodies. Immunostaining of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was more intense and extensive in ascitic broilers than in the controls, although a decrease was seen with increasing age both in normal and ascitic chickens. The presence of MMP-9 enzyme was negatively correlated with the presence of TIMP-1 enzyme. It is suggested that MMP-2 and MMP-9 enzymes might play a role in the permeability increase of vessel walls by the destruction of the basement membranes in the salt-induced experimental ascites syndrome in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Conducting polymers are excellent candidates for applications in displays, mirrors, windows, light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, near-infrared devices and electrochromic devices. From these potential applications, in this article, we will focus on the electrochromic polymers and devices. Although several objective studies have been conducted in the last decade, bringing to light many advantages over other types of electrochromics, polymeric electrochromics have not yet received the industrial attention that they deserve. One of the most important and dazzling advantages of polymers over the other types of electrochromics is the ease of modification of a polymer's backbone, that changes almost the entire properties of the material and switches many disadvantages into advantages. Our recent completion of the deficient third leg of additive primary colour space was a very good example of tailoring the polymer backbone. This discovery could be considered as one of the milestones of commercialization of polymeric electrochromics. In this article, we will also discuss the completion of the additive primary colours, red, green and blue (RGB), in polymeric electrochromics and their ways of commercialization.

Abstract
TTF produces two completely different phenomena with the different isomers of chloranil; with the para isomer it produces an insulating, alternating stack, ambient temperature neutral solid. While with the ortho isomer, it produces a more interesting system consisting of interconvertible conducting ionic and covalent components.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A twistacene, 6,8,15,17-tetraphenyl-1.18,4.5,9.10,13.14-tetrabenzoheptacene (3), was synthesized using a mild and novel bisbenzyne precursor. It was characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR, UV-vis, and IR spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations. The heptacene derivative possesses a nonpropeller twist topology and is unusually stable for a highly conjugated oligoacene. In addition, it is fluorescent, with a quantum efficiency of 15%. Distortion from planarity, mostly due to the phenyl substituents, causes only marginal changes in electronic properties and is beneficial for redox reversibility, which is required for efficient OLED devices.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) on fracture healing in rabbits, two groups of 10 rabbits were either injected with alpha-tocopherol (treated) or untreated (controls). The right femurs of both groups were fractured, and the treated group were injected intramuscularly with 20 mg/kg alpha-tocopherol daily for 5 days starting on the day of fracture. After 21 days, histological sections of the fractured region were examined and scored. Fracture healing had progressed further in the alpha-tocopherol group than in the control group. A statistically significant difference between the histological grading of fracture healing in the two groups was found. This difference may result from an antioxidant (alpha-tocopherol) effect on free oxygen radicals in the fracture area. We conclude that alpha-tocopherol may affect fracture healing favourably and might be useful as a therapeutic agent in clinical fracture management.
