Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown an association between rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and neurodegenerative disorders, especially alpha-synucleinopathies. OBJECTIVE We investigated regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with idiopathic RBD (iRBD), to determine functional brain alterations associated with the disorder. METHODS The SPECT data of 24 patients with iRBD were compared with those of 18 age-matched normal controls using statistical parametric mapping 2. RESULTS We found decreased rCBF in the parietooccipital lobe (precuneus), limbic lobe, and cerebellar hemispheres in patients with iRBD, which is commonly seen in patients with Lewy body disease (Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies) or multiple system atrophy. CONCLUSION Our SPECT study suggests that iRBD can be a presymptomatic stage of alpha-synucleinopathies.

Abstract
OBJECT Age-related morphological changes in the human hyoid bone were investigated radiographically and histologically. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two measurements were performed on radiographs of 238 hyoid bones from autopsy cases of known age and sex. Thirty-one hyoid bones that were studied by radiography were also examined histologically in horizontal sections. RESULTS Analysis of the length and width of the hyoid bone revealed significant increases in the body and the anterior part of the greater cornu and a significant decrease in the posterior part of the greater cornu with aging. Most measurements of the body and the greater cornu revealed differences between male and female hyoid bones. The outer margins of the body and the greater cornu were situated further outside in older males compared with females. The breadth of the joint space showed a significant age-related decrease, and the degree of fusion showed a significant age-related increase. Histological findings showed ossified or calcified fusion, with osteoclasts in the marginal area of the joint space. CONCLUSIONS Increasing age induces fusion of the body and the greater cornu. The morphometric changes in the shape of the hyoid bone may represent functional adaptation to articulation fixation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate histologically the effect of initially light and gradually increasing force on tooth movement in the rat. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cuboids made of neodymium-iron-boron magnets (experimental groups) or titanium (control group) were bonded to the lingual surface of the right and left maxillary first molars of 18-week-old male Wistar rats. The initial distances between materials were 1.0 mm generating 4.96 gf (experimental group 1) and 1.5 mm generating 2.26 gf (experimental group 2). In three groups, rats were killed 1, 3, 7, 10, or 14 days after treatment. Histological sections were prepared and stained with hematoxylin and eosin or for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity. The number of TRAP-positive osteoclasts was counted, and the relative hyalinized area was measured on the pressure side of periodontal ligament. RESULTS There were significant differences in the number of osteoclasts among the three groups (P < .05). On days 1 and 3, the numbers of osteoclasts in experimental group 2 were greater than in experimental group 1. There were significant differences in the relative hyalinized area between the control group and experimental group 1 (P < .01) and between experimental groups 1 and 2 (P < .01). On days 1 and 3, the hyalinized area in experimental group 1 was larger than in experimental group 2. CONCLUSION Initially light and gradually increasing force induced tooth movement without the lag phase and showed smooth recruitment of osteoclasts and inhibition of hyalinization.

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the effects of cold atmospheric plasma on osteoblastic differentiation in pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Plasma was irradiated directly to a culture medium containing plated cells for 5 s or 10 s. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay and alizarin red staining were applied to assess osteoblastic differentiation. The plasma-generated radicals were detected directly using an electron spin resonance-spin trapping technique. Results show that plasma irradiation under specific conditions increased ALP activity and enhanced mineralization, and demonstrated that the yield of radicals was increased in an irradiation-time-dependent manner. Appropriate plasma irradiation stimulated the osteoblastic differentiation of the cells. This process offers the potential of promoting bone regeneration.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective: To examine the mechanical properties and the usefulness of titanium-niobium-aluminum (Ti-Nb-Al) wire in orthodontic tooth movement as compared with nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) wire.
Materials and Methods: The load deflection of expansion springs was gauged with an original jig. The gradient of the superelastic region was measured during the unloading process. Expansion springs comprising the two types of alloy wires were applied to upper first molars of rats. The distance between the first molars was measured with micrometer calipers.
Results: The force magnitude of the Ti-Nb-Al expansion spring was lower than that of the Ni-Ti expansion spring over the entire deflection range. The initial force magnitude and the gradient in the superelastic region of the Ti-Nb-Al expansion springs were half those of the Ni-Ti expansion springs. Thus, Ti-Nb-Al expansion springs generated lighter and more continuous force. Tooth movement in the Ni-Ti group proceeded in a stepwise fashion. On the other hand, tooth movement in the Ti-Nb-Al group showed relatively smooth and continuous progression. At 17 days after insertion of expansion springs, there were no significant differences between the Ti-Nb-Al and Ni-Ti groups in the amount of tooth movement.
Conclusions: These results indicate that Ti-Nb-Al wire has excellent mechanical properties for smooth, continuous tooth movement and suggest that Ti-Nb-Al wire may be used as a practical nickel-free shape memory and superelastic alloy wire for orthodontic treatment as a substitute for Ni-Ti wire.

Abstract
Development of bioceramics with antibacterial activity and without cytotoxicity would be beneficial for preventing infection associated with implants. This study aimed to capitalize on the antibacterial properties of silver (Ag) incorporated in or coexisting in metallic form with calcium phosphates (CaPs). The in vitro dissolution behavior, antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity of Ag-containing CaPs with different phase fractions of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were evaluated. The antibacterial activity of Ag-containing CaPs depended on the main phase of CaP, the chemical state of Ag, and the amount of incorporated Ag. Superior antibacterial activity was obtained from sustained release of Ag ions through continuous dissolution of Ag-incorporated β-TCP compared to that obtained for HA coexisting with metallic Ag particles. Ag-containing CaPs did not exhibit any toxic effect on V79 fibroblasts. Thus, these results demonstrated the effectiveness of Ag-incorporated β-TCP in preventing infection, with respect to long-term applications.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effect of dorsomorphin, a selective inhibitor of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, on rat PC12 pheochromocytoma cell differentiation. PC12 cells can be induced to differentiate into neuron-like cells possessing elongated neurites by nerve growth factor, BMP2, and other inducers. Cells were incubated with BMP2 and/or dorsomorphin, and the extent of neurite outgrowth was evaluated. Unexpectedly, BMP2-mediated neuritogenesis was not inhibited by co-treatment with dorsomorphin. We also found that treatment with dorsomorphin alone, but not another BMP signaling inhibitor, LDN-193189, induced neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. To further understand the mechanism of action of dorsomorphin, the effects of this drug on intracellular signaling were investigated using the following signaling inhibitors: the ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitor U0126; the tropomyosin-related kinase A inhibitor GW441756; and the protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor H89. Dorsomorphin induced rapid and sustained ERK1/2 activation; however, dorsomorphin-mediated ERK1/2 activation and neuritogenesis were robustly inhibited in the presence of U0126 or H89, but not GW441756. These findings suggest that dorsomorphin has the potential to induce neuritogenesis in PC12 cells, a response that requires the activation of PKA-dependent MEK-ERK1/2 signaling.

Abstract
Initial cell responses following implantation are important for inducing osteoconductivity. We investigated cell adhesion, spreading, and proliferation in response to native and bovine serum albumin (BSA)-adsorbed disc of hydroxyapatite (HA) or alpha-type alumina (α-Al2O3) using mouse MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells and mouse RAW264.7 macrophages. The adsorbed BSA inhibited adhesion and spreading of MC3T3-E1 cells, but did not affect MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation on HA and α-Al2O3 substrates. Thus, MC3T3-E1 cells quickly adhere to original HA before cell binding is impeded by adsorption of BSA in quantities sufficient to inhibit the adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells. The adsorbed BSA inhibits adhesion of RAW264.7 cells to α-Al2O3, but not to HA. BSA adsorption does not affect RAW264.7 cell spreading and proliferation on both HA and α-Al2O3 substrates. Thus, BSA adsorbed on HA stimulates a different cell response than α-Al2O3. Moreover, quick adherence of osteoblast cells and monocyte-macrophage lineage cells plays a role in HA osteoconductivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In conventional bone grafting technique, decortication procedure enhances the healing process and bone regeneration to reach the grafted site more readily. PURPOSE This study evaluates to improve periosteal expansion osteogenesis (PEO) using a shape memory alloy mesh (SMA) device with decortication in a rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS The SMA device was inserted under the periosteum at the forehead and pushed, bent, and attached to the bone surface and fixed with a titanium screw. Twelve rabbits were divided into two groups: PEO without decortication (P group) and with decortication (D group). After 2 weeks, the screw was removed, and the mesh was activated by its own elasticity. Rabbits were sacrificed 5 (P1/D1) and 8 (P2/D2) weeks after operation and histologically and radiographically evaluated. RESULTS The mean activation height was 2.9 ± 0.5 mm. The ratio of new bone volume in the elevated volume was 17.6% in P1, 59.8% in D1 33.4% in P2, and 65.1% in D2. D group had a statistically higher volume of new bone than P group during each period (p < .05). CONCLUSION PEO with decortication appears to be a promising clinical alternative for bone augmentation and introduces the new concept of "dynamic graft and guided bone regeneration (GBR)."

Abstract
To promote the functional restoration of the nervous system following injury, it is necessary to provide optimal extracellular signals that can induce neuronal regenerative activities, particularly neurite formation. This study aimed to examine the regulation of neuritogenesis by temperature-controlled repeated thermal stimulation (TRTS) in rat PC12 pheochromocytoma cells, which can be induced by neurotrophic factors to differentiate into neuron-like cells with elongated neurites. A heating plate was used to apply thermal stimulation, and the correlation of culture medium temperature with varying surface temperature of the heating plate was monitored. Plated PC12 cells were exposed to TRTS at two different temperatures via heating plate (preset surface temperature of the heating plate, 39.5°C or 42°C) in growth or differentiating medium for up to 18 h per day. We then measured the extent of growth, neuritogenesis, or acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity (a neuronal marker). To analyze the mechanisms underlying the effects of TRTS on these cells, we examined changes in intracellular signaling using the following: tropomyosin-related kinase A inhibitor GW441756; p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor SB203580; and MAPK/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) kinase (MEK) inhibitor U0126 with its inactive analog, U0124, as a control. While a TRTS of 39.5°C did not decrease the growth rate of cells in the cell growth assay, it did increase the number of neurite-bearing PC12 cells and AChE activity without the addition of other neuritogenesis inducers. Furthermore, U0126, and SB203580, but not U0124 and GW441756, considerably inhibited TRTS-induced neuritogenesis. These results suggest that TRTS can induce neuritogenesis and that participation of both the ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathways is required for TRTS-dependent neuritogenesis in PC12 cells. Thus, TRTS may be an effective technique for regenerative neuromedicine.

Abstract
The photocatalytic bactericidal activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films has been extensively studied. In this study, we investigated the bactericidal activities of TiO2 nanotube (NT) thin films using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells as the model bacteria. Metallic titanium (Ti) thin films were anodized on a silicon (Si) wafer substrate to form TiO2 NT thin films. To evaluate the bactericidal activity of the TiO2 NT thin films, bacteria on the TiO2 NT thin films were irradiated with near-ultraviolet light (UV-A) at a wavelength of 365 nm. The bactericidal activity was estimated by the survival rate derived from the number of live cells, which form colonies on the cell culture medium. We demonstrated that the survival rate of the two types of bacteria investigated in this study was significantly reduced by UV light irradiation and that there was a difference in the temporal change in the survival rate between the two types of bacteria. Furthermore, we investigated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) by UV light irradiation of TiO2 NT thin films using electron spin resonance spectroscopy and fluorescence analysis. We found that the main ROS generated on the surface of the TiO2 NT film was the hydroxyl radical, OH•. In addition, the generation of ROSs increased with an increase in the UV irradiation time. We proposed a kinetic model that reproduces the dependence of bacterial viability on the UV light irradiation time by considering the temporal change in the amount of ROSs generated by UV light irradiation. A comparison of the calculated and experimental results revealed that the bactericidal effect consisted of the direct photolysis of bacteria and the photocatalysis via the generation of hydroxyl radicals, with the latter exhibiting a stronger bactericidal effect than the former.

Abstract
Cytoprotective effects of short-term treatment with grape seed extract (GSE) upon human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) were evaluated in relation to its antioxidant properties and compared with those of a water-soluble analog of vitamin E: trolox (Tx). GSE and Tx showed comparable antioxidant potential in vitro against di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)iminoazanium (DPPH; a stable radical), hydroxyl radical (•OH), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Pretreatment or concomitant treatment with GSE for 1 min protected hGFs from oxidative stressors, including H2O2, acid-electrolyzed water (AEW), and 1O2, and attenuated the intracellular formation of reactive oxygen species induced by H2O2 and AEW. Tx also reduced the H2O2- and AEW-induced intracellular formation of reactive oxygen species, but showed no cytoprotective effects on hGFs exposed to H2O2, AEW, or 1O2. These results suggest that the cytoprotective effects of GSE are likely exerted independently of its antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Although decreased occipital perfusion is a characteristic feature of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), not all patients with DLB show a significant decreased perfusion in the occipital lobe. We explored characteristics of perfusion changes to improve the identification of DLB, in addition to occipital hypoperfusion. Statistical image analysis of single photon emission computed tomography data was performed on 22 patients with DLB and 25 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). A significant decreased perfusion in the occipital lobe was found in 16 patients with DLB (72%) and three patients with AD (12%), while a significant increased perfusion in the deep gray matter (striatum and/or thalamus) was found in 18 patients with DLB (81%) and eight patients with AD (31%), respectively. Either occipital hypoperfusion or deep gray matter hyperperfusion was found in 21 patients with DLB (95%), while in nine patients with AD (35%), indicating a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 65% in discriminating DLB from AD. Our results suggest that the addition of deep gray matter hyperperfusion to occipital hypoperfusion may be useful in the clinical differentiation of DLB and AD.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective: To examine the effects of gradually increasing force generated by permanent rare earth magnets for orthodontic tooth movement by using a novel experimental rat model and computer simulation.
Materials and Methods: Fifty-five male rats (age 18 weeks) were used as animal experiments. Magnetic (experimental groups) or titanium (control group) cuboids (1.5 × 1.5 × 0.7 mm) were bonded to the lingual surface of the maxillary first molars. The initial distance between materials was 1.0 mm, generating 4.96 gf (experimental group I), or 1.5 mm, generating 2.26 gf (experimental group II). Tooth movement was measured and periodontal structures were observed with microfocus x-ray computed tomography radiographs.
Results: The distance between the magnets decreased with time in experimental groups I and II (P < .001), whereas there was no tooth displacement in the control group. Experimental group I showed rapid tooth movement in the initial phase followed by slower tooth movement. Experimental group II showed gradual tooth movement. Horizontal sections on microfocus computed tomgraphy radiographs revealed no pathological changes, such as root resorption, on the compressed side in the experimental groups.
Conclusions: The initial light force and gradual increasing force in magnetic attractive force induced effective tooth movement in rats without inducing any pathological changes.

Abstract
We investigated the bactericidal activity of bulk nanobubbles (NBs) using E. coli, a model bacterium. Bulk NBs were produced by forcing gas through a porous alumina membrane with an ordered arrangement of nanoscale straight holes in contact with water. NBs with different gas contents, including CO2, O2, and N2, were generated and evaluated for their bactericidal effects. The survival rate of E. coli was significantly reduced in a suspension of CO2-containing NB (CO2-NB water). The N2-NB water demonstrated a small amount of bactericidal behavior, but its impact was not as significant as that of CO2-NB water. When E. coli was retained in O2-NB water, the survival rate was even higher than that in pure water (PW). We investigated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in NB suspensions by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The main ROS generated in the NB water were hydroxyl radicals and OH·, and the production of ROS was the strongest in CO2-NB water, which was consistent with the results of the bactericidal effect measurements. We assumed that NB mediated by ROS would exhibit bactericidal behavior and proposed a kinetic model to explain the retention time variation of the survival rate. The results calculated based on the proposed model matched closely with the experimental results.
