BCL6 attenuates hyperoxia-induced lung injury by inhibiting NLRP3-mediated inflammation in fetal mouse. Exp Lung Res 2024; 50:25-41. [PMID: 38419581 DOI: 10.1080/01902148.2024.2320665] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2023] [Accepted: 02/12/2024] [Indexed: 03/02/2024]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The transcriptional repressor B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) has been reported to inhibit inflammation. So far, experimental evidence for the role of BCL6 in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is lacking. Our study investigated the roles of BCL6 in the progression of BPD and its downstream mechanisms. METHODS Hyperoxia or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to mimic the BPD mouse model. To investigate the effects of BCL6 on BPD, recombination adeno-associated virus serotype 9 expressing BCL6 (rAAV9-BCL6) and BCL6 inhibitor FX1 were administered in mice. The pulmonary pathological changes, inflammatory chemokines and NLRP3-related protein were observed. Meanwhile, BCL6 overexpression plasmid was used in human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs). Cell proliferation, apoptosis, and NLRP3-related protein were detected. RESULTS Either hyperoxia or LPS suppressed pulmonary BCL6 mRNA expression. rAAV9-BCL6 administration significantly inhibited hyperoxia-induced NLRP3 upregulation and inflammation, attenuated alveolar simplification and dysregulated angiogenesis in BPD mice, which were characterized by decreased mean linear intercept, increased radical alveolar count and alveoli numbers, and the upregulated CD31 expression. Meanwhile, BCL6 overexpression promoted proliferation and angiogenesis, inhibited apoptosis and inflammation in hyperoxia-stimulated HPMECs. Moreover, administration of BCL6 inhibitor FX1 arrested growth and development. FX1-treated BPD mice exhibited exacerbation of alveolar pathological changes and pulmonary vessel permeability, with upregulated mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-fibrogenic factors. Furthermore, both rAAV9-BCL6 and FX1 administration exerted a long-lasting effect on hyperoxia-induced lung injury (≥4 wk). CONCLUSIONS BCL6 inhibits NLRP3-mediated inflammation, attenuates alveolar simplification and dysregulated pulmonary vessel development in hyperoxia-induced BPD mice. Hence, BCL6 may be a target in treating BPD and neonatal diseases.

Cognitive frailty and its association with disability among Chinese community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study. BMC Geriatr 2024; 24:189. [PMID: 38409011 PMCID: PMC10895716 DOI: 10.1186/s12877-024-04773-0] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/26/2023] [Accepted: 02/02/2024] [Indexed: 02/28/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND There are a variety of determinants that are key to functional disability of older adults. However, little is known regarding the relationship between cognitive frailty and disability among older people. The aims of this study were to examine the associations between cognitive frailty and its six components with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) functioning in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS A total of 313 community-dwelling older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) were recruited from eight community centers in central China. Cognitive frailty was operationalized using the Mini-Mental State Examination for the evaluation of cognitive status and the Fried criteria for the evaluation of physical frailty. The outcome was functional disability assessed by the IADL scale. The association between cognitive frailty, as well as its components, and IADL limitations was identified by conducting binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of cognitive frailty was 8.9% in this study. The results showed that cognitive frailty (OR = 22.86) and frailty without cognitive impairment (OR = 8.15) were associated with IADL limitations. Subdimensions of cognitive frailty, exhaustion, weakness, low physical activity and cognitive impairment components were independently associated with IADL limitations. CONCLUSION Cognitive frailty was associated with a higher prevalence of disability. Interventions for improving cognitive frailty should be developed to prevent IADL disability among community-dwelling older adults in China.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Functional loss of Arabidopsis Sar1b with that of either Sar1a or Sar1c inhibits mitosis of functional megaspores, leading to defective embryo sac formation and reduced fertility. Vesicular trafficking among diverse endomembrane compartments is critical for eukaryotic cells. Anterograde trafficking from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus is mediated by coat protein complex II (COPII) vesicles. Among five cytosolic components of COPII, secretion-associated Ras-related GTPase 1 (Sar1) mediates the assembly and disassembly of the COPII coat. Five genes in Arabidopsis encode Sar1 isoforms, whose different cargo specificities and redundancy were both reported. We show here that Arabidopsis Sar1a, Sar1b, and Sar1c mediate the development of female gametophytes (FGs), in which Sar1b plays a major role, whereas Sar1a and Sar1c play a minor role. We determined that female transmission of sar1a;sar1b or sar1c;sar1b was significantly reduced due to defective mitosis of functional megaspores. Half of ovules in sar1a;sar1b/+ or sar1c;sar1b/+ plants failed to attract pollen tubes, leading to fertilization failure. The homozygous sar1a;sar1b or sar1c;sar1b double mutant was obtained by introducing either UBQ10:GFP-Sar1b or UBQ10:GFP-Sar1c, supporting their redundant function in FG development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salt stress severely restricts rapeseed growth and productivity. Hemin can effectively alleviate salt stress in plants. However, the regulatory effect of Hemin on rapeseed in salt stress is unclear. Here, we analyzed the response and remediation mechanism of Hemin application to rapeseed before and after 0.6% (m salt: m soil) NaCl stress. Experiment using two Brassica napus (AACC, 2n = 38) rapeseed varieties Huayouza 158R (moderately salt-tolerant) and Huayouza 62 (strongly salt-tolerant). To explore the best optional ways to improve salt stress resistance in rapeseed. RESULTS Our findings revealed that exogenous application of Hemin enhanced morph-physiological traits of rapeseed and significantly attenuate the inhibition of NaCl stress. Compared to Hemin (SH) treatment, Hemin (HS) significantly improved seedlings root length, seedlings height, stem diameter and accumulated more dry matter biomass under NaCl stress. Moreover, Hemin (HS) significantly improved photosynthetic efficiency, activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and decreased electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, thus resulting in the alleviation of oxidative membrane damage. Hemin (HS) showed better performance than Hemin (SH) under NaCl stress. CONCLUSION Hemin could effectively mitigate the adverse impacts of salt stress by regulating the morph-physiological, photosynthetic and antioxidants traits of rapeseed. This study may provide a basis for Hemin to regulate cultivated rapeseed salt tolerance and explore a better way to alleviate salt stress.

Abstract
Strongly correlated Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs (biphotons) exhibiting very large generation rates and spectral brightnesses could be attained at extremely low pump powers and optical depths. This is realized via spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms with enhanced nonlocal (Rydberg) optical nonlinearities and prepared into a dark state with a large population imbalance. The scheme works with all light fields on resonance yet with negligible linear absorption and Raman gain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salt stress is one of the key factors limiting rice production. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) enhance plant stress resistance. However, the molecular mechanism underlying salt tolerance in rice induced by AOS remains unclear. FL478, which is a salt-tolerant indica recombinant inbred line and IR29, a salt-sensitive rice cultivar, were used to comprehensively analyze the effects of AOS sprayed on leaves in terms of transcriptomic and metabolite profiles of rice seedlings under salt stress. RESULTS In this experiment, exogenous application of AOS increased SOD, CAT and APX activities, as well as GSH and ASA levels to reduce the damage to leaf membrane, increased rice stem diameter, the number of root tips, aboveground and subterranean biomass, and improved rice salt tolerance. Comparative transcriptomic analyses showed that the regulation of AOS combined with salt treatment induced the differential expression of 305 and 1030 genes in FL478 and IR29. The expressed genes enriched in KEGG pathway analysis were associated with antioxidant levels, photosynthesis, cell wall synthesis, and signal transduction. The genes associated with light-trapping proteins and RLCK receptor cytoplasmic kinases, including CBA, LHCB, and Lhcp genes, were fregulated in response to salt stress. Treatment with AOS combined with salt induced the differential expression of 22 and 50 metabolites in FL478 and IR29. These metabolites were mainly related to the metabolism of amino and nucleotide sugars, tryptophan, histidine, and β -alanine. The abundance of metabolites associated with antioxidant activity, such as 6-hydroxymelatonin, wedelolactone and L-histidine increased significantly. Combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that dehydroascorbic acid in the glutathione and ascorbic acid cycles plays a vital role in salt tolerance mediated by AOS. CONCLUSION AOS activate signal transduction, regulate photosynthesis, cell wall formation, and multiple antioxidant pathways in response to salt stress. This study provides a molecular basis for the alleviation of salt stress-induced damage by AOS in rice.

Abstract
With the development of technology and medicine, the mortality rate of intensive care unit (ICU) has declined significantly, and more and more professionals in the medical field are also aware that the disability rate of ICU survivors remains high. More than 70% of ICU survivors have Post-ICU Syndrome (PICS), which is mainly manifested by cognitive, physical, and mental dysfunction, which seriously affects the quality of life of survivors and their caregivers. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a series of problems such as shortage of medical staff, restricted family visits, and lack of personalized care, which have brought unprecedented challenges to the prevention of PICS and the care of patients with severe COVID-19. In the future, the treatment of ICU patients should change from reducing short-term mortality to improving long-term quality of life of patients, from disease-centered to health-centered, and to practice " the health promotion, the prevention, the diagnosis, the control, the treatment, and the rehabilitation " six-in-one concept to promote comprehensive health care with pulmonary rehabilitation.

MiR-155-5p Attenuates Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Oxidative Stress and Migration via Inhibiting BACH1 Expression. Biomedicines 2023; 11:1679. Abstract
The malfunction of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is an initiating factor in the pathogenesis of pathological vascular remodeling, including hypertension-related vascular lesions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of VSMC proliferation and migration in numerous cases of cardiovascular remodeling. The evidence for the regulatory role of miR-155-5p in the development of the cardiovascular system has been emerging. However, it was previously unclear whether miR-155-5p participated in the migration of VSMCs under hypertensive conditions. Thus, we aimed to define the exact role and action of miR-155-5p in VSMC migration by hypertension. Here, we detected that the level of miR-155-5p was lower in primary VSMCs from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Its overexpression attenuated, while its depletion accelerated, the migration and oxidative damage of VSMCs from SHRs. Our dual-luciferase reporter assay showed that miRNA-155-5p directly targeted the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of BTB and CNC homology 1 (BACH1). The miR-155-5p mimic inhibited BACH1 upregulation in SHR VSMCs. By contrast, the deletion of miR-155-5p further elevated the upregulation of BACH1 in SHR-derived VSMCs. Importantly, the overexpression of miR-155-5p and knockdown of BACH1 had synergistic effects on the inhibition of VSMCs in hypertension. Collectively, miR-155-5p attenuates VSMC migration and ameliorates vascular remodeling in SHRs, via suppressing BACH1 expression.

Abstract
PURPOSE The integral conceptual model of frailty (ICFM) integrates physical, psychological, social aspects of individuals and stresses that frailty is a dynamic state evolving over time. This study aimed to validate the ICMF among community-dwelling older adults in China. METHODS The study recruited 341 older community-dwelling adults by convenient sampling method between June 1 and August 30, 2019 in Hubei province, China. The data was collected by questionnaire-based survey. Frailty was assessed by the Chinese version of the Tilburg Frailty Index. Participants were assessed for life-course determinants, disease and adverse health outcomes. Hierarchical regression analyses, Bootstrap method and the structural equation model were conducted in data analysis. RESULTS Both linear and logistic hierarchical regression models were statistically significant. Life-course determinants, disease, and three domains of frailty together explained 35.6% to 50.6% of the variance of disability and all domains of quality of life. The mediation effect of frailty between disease and all adverse outcomes was significant, excluding hospitalization. The structural equation model guided by the ICMF fits the data well. CONCLUSIONS The ICMF is valid among community-dwelling older adults in China. Therefore, the multidimensional concept of frailty should be widely used in Chinese communities.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of m6A RNA methylation to CaOX-induced renal tubular injury. Microarray analysis was performed to detect the difference in mRNA expression and m6A methylation between the injurious groups and controls. We established injurious renal tubular epithelial cell model induced by calcium oxalate crystals (CaOX), and we validated that CaOX could increase the overall m6A methylation levels. By microarray analysis, we identified 5967 differentially expressed mRNAs (2444 were up-regulated and 3523 were down-regulated in the injurious groups) and 6853 differentially methylated mRNAs (4055 were in hypermethylation and 3688 were in hypomethylation in the injurious groups). Four clusters (hyper-up, hyper-down, hypo-up and hypo-down) were further identified via conjoint analysis. Functional analysis revealed that m6A methylation played a crucial role in the development of CaOX through participating multiple processes covering inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, crystal-cell adhesion. We delineated the first transcriptome-wide m6A landscape of injurious renal tubular cells in high-CaOX environment. We identified a series of mRNAs of renal tubular epithelial cells with differential expression and m6A methylation between the CaOX-treated groups and controls.

Marine Sponge-Derived Alkaloid Induces Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Inhibits the PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling Pathway against Burkitt's Lymphoma. JOURNAL OF NATURAL PRODUCTS 2023; 86:45-51. Abstract
Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) has a particularly extremely poor prognosis and the fastest growth rate among human tumors, and the development of new drugs for the treatment of BL is urgently needed. In this study, the cytotoxic properties of 3,7-bis(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-aaptamine (AP-51), a new semisynthetic alkaloid derived from the marine natural product aapatamine, were investigated using BL cell lines. Our results showed that AP-51 inhibited the proliferation of Daudi and Raji cells with IC50 values of 3.48 and 2.07 μM, respectively. Flow cytometry and Western blot analyses showed that AP-51 initiated G0/G1 phase arrest by modulating the expression of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). AP-51 also induced apoptosis, as demonstrated by nuclear fragmentation, downregulation of BCL-XL and Mcl-1, and upregulation of cleaved caspase-9, cleaved caspase-3, cleaved-PARP, and cytochrome c, the markers of apoptosis regulated via the mitochondrial pathway. When it comes to mitochondria, AP-51 treatment also significantly increased the levels of intracellular mitochondrial superoxide, decreased ATP content, and reduced the expression of ATP synthase, as well as the expression of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes. Finally, AP-51 treatment significantly inhibited the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which was shown to be associated with the induction of apoptosis. Collectively, these findings indicated that AP-51 initiated cell cycle arrest, induced apoptosis, caused mitochondrial dysfunction, and decreased the phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway-related proteins and the protein levels of C-MYC, suggesting that AP-51 has therapeutic potential as a possible treatment for Burkitt's lymphoma.

Abstract
Four new PKS-NRPS-derived macrolide lactams with three unique ring fusion types were discovered from the Arctic sponge associated actinomycete Streptomyces somaliensis 1107 using a genome mining strategy. Their structures were elucidated by a combination of MS, NMR spectroscopic analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Biosynthetically, a novel gene cluster sml consisting of three polyketide synthases and one hybrid polyketide synthase-nonribosomal peptide synthetase together with cytochrome P450s and flavin-containing monooxygenases and oxidoreductases was demonstrated to assemble the unique skeleton. Pharmacological studies revealed that compound 1 displayed a potent anti-inflammatory effect without cytotoxicity. It inhibited IL-6 and TNF-α release in the serum of LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells with IC50 values of 5.76 and 0.18 μM, respectively, and modulated the MAPK pathway. Moreover, compound 1 alleviated LPS-induced systemic inflammation in our transgenic fluorescent zebrafish model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the changes of cerebral white matter diffusion tensor in epilepsy. METHODS This study was a retrospective study based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Twenty-six epileptic patients and 42 normal controls matched for sex, age and handedness were enrolled in our research. Based on the method of tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS), we analyzed the changes of each relevant parameter index of DTI in white matter of the brain in all subjects, including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD). RESULTS In comparison with the control group, epileptic patients had decreased FA and elevated MD, AD, and RD in the anterior thalamic radiation, corticospinal tract, forceps major, forceps minor, cingulum, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, inferior longitudinal fasciculus, superior longitudinal fasciculus and uncinate fasciculus (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Widespread white matter integrity was observed in epileptic patients, which may be the structural basis for the development of affective disorders, impaired cognition, and motor abnormalities.

Maternal propionate supplementation ameliorates glucose and lipid metabolic disturbance in hypoxia-induced fetal growth restriction. Food Funct 2022; 13:10724-10736. Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), one of the major complications of pregnancy, is characterized by low birth weight and results in higher risks for long-term problems including developing metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially propionate, have been reported to correct glucose and lipid disorders in metabolic diseases. We hypothesized that maternal propionate supplementation could prevent glucose and lipid metabolic disturbance in hypoxia-induced IUGR. Here, in our study, maternal hypoxia was induced from gestational day (GD) 11 to GD 17.5 to establish an IUGR mouse model. Maternal propionate treatment reversed reduced birth weight in male IUGR offspring. Hepatic transcriptomics demonstrated that SP treatment significantly lowered glucose and lipid metabolism-related genes (Scd1, G6pc, Pck1 and Fasl) in IUGR offspring. KOG enrichment analysis showed that propionate-induced down-regulated differential expressed genes (DEGs) mainly belonged to lipid transport and metabolism. KEGG enrichment results showed that the down-regulated DEGs were mostly enriched in PPAR and FoxO signaling pathways. We also found that maternal oral administration of SP decreased serum lipid content, attenuated hepatic insulin resistance and liver lipid accumulation, reduced hepatic key gene expressions of gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis, increased energy expenditure and improved liver function in 11-week-old male IUGR offspring. These results indicate that maternal propionate supplementation increases birth weight and corrects hepatic glucose and lipid metabolic disturbance and energy expenditure in male mice born with IUGR, which may provide a basis for using propionate to treat IUGR disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in patients with epilepsy. METHODS Each study subject was randomly assigned to a CBT (n=46) or control (n=49) group (1:1 ratio), and the first group underwent an 8-week CBT treatment. Anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QOLIE-31) were assessed at both baseline and endpoint using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Hamilton Depression Scale (HDMA) and quality of life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) scales. The statistical analyses included between-and within-group comparisons of the effects of CBT on these measures and associations with demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS No differences were found between variables at baseline (P>0.05). The repeated-measures analyses found that CBT group had greater improvement in depression score compared to the control group (P<0.05). The analysis of anxiety score showed that compared to the control group, CBT intervention had no statistical significance in the total anxiety population. However, the CBT intervention decreased anxiety in women and Combined-drug group (P<0.05). The CBT group had greater improvement in overall score, medication effect, and seizure worry score than the control group (P<0.05). Stratified analysis found total and medication effects score of CBT intervention group for the combined-drug group were higher than those of the single drug group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Increases in overall scores, seizure worry, cognitive functioning, and medication effect were better in the CBT group. CBT can improve anxiety, depression, and quality of life in patients with epilepsy. Women and combined-drug patients with epilepsy benefit most from CBT.

(D-Ser2) oxyntomodulin recovers hippocampal synaptic structure and theta rhythm in Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice. Neural Regen Res 2022; 17:2072-2078. Abstract
In our previous studies, we have shown that (D-Ser2) oxyntomodulin (Oxm), a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor (GLP1R)/glucagon receptor (GCGR) dual agonist peptide, protects hippocampal neurons against Aβ1–42 -induced cytotoxicity, and stabilizes the calcium homeostasis and mitochondrial membrane potential of hippocampal neurons. Additionally, we have demonstrated that (D-Ser2) Oxm improves cognitive decline and reduces the deposition of amyloid-beta in Alzheimer's disease model mice. However, the protective mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we showed that 2 weeks of intraperitoneal administration of (D-Ser2) Oxm ameliorated the working memory and fear memory impairments of 9-month-old 3×Tg Alzheimer's disease model mice. In addition, electrophysiological data recorded by a wireless multichannel neural recording system implanted in the hippocampal CA1 region showed that (D-Ser2) Oxm increased the power of the theta rhythm. In addition, (D-Ser2) Oxm treatment greatly increased the expression level of synaptic-associated proteins SYP and PSD-95 and increased the number of dendritic spines in 3×Tg Alzheimer's disease model mice. These findings suggest that (D-Ser2) Oxm improves the cognitive function of Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice by recovering hippocampal synaptic function and theta rhythm.

Abstract
Objective: To study the clinical and pathologic factors of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and its significance as a histopathologic subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Methods: A retrospective study of 719 patients with non-high-risk PTMC who underwent surgery for the first time in the Peking University People's Hospital from January 2007 to June 2019 was conducted, the relationship between clinicopathologic factors and lymph node metastasis, and the expression of four tumor markers CK19, HMBE1, Galectin-3 and CD56 by immunohistochemistry were evaluated. Some comparisons were made with PTC. Results: The peak patients' age was 40-49 years for both non-high-risk PTMC and PTC; the lymph node metastasis rate was higher in the 30-39 years age group than the 50-59 years age group (P<0.05); the lymph nodes metastasis rate was significantly higher for multiple lesions than for single lesion (P<0.05). Lymph node metastasis rate of PTMC with capsular invasion was significantly higher than those without (P<0.05). There was no significant correlation between lymph node metastasis of PTMC and patients' gender, tumor location, tumor size, and lymphocytic thyroiditis. The expression rates of CK19, HMBE1 and Galectin-3 both in PTMC and PTC were 100%, and the expression rates of CD56 were 25.6% (85/332) and 20.0% (70/350) respectively. Conclusion: As the main pathologic subtype of PTC, a variety of clinicopathologic factors of PTMC are related to lymph node metastasis, and it is highly recommended to pay close attention to PTMC. The expression of tumor marker CD56 alone cannot be used as a basis to exclude PTMC and PTC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increasing of older adults has led to enormous demand for medical care. However, as a group with unique needs and characteristics, older adults are often discriminated against in the medical field. In this paper, we aimed to translate the Fraboni Scale of Ageism (FSA) into Chinese and examine its construct validity, content validity, and reliability in Chinese mainland medical students. In order to evaluate the prevalence of ageism in Chinese medical students and prompt medical college to adopt necessary teaching methods to mitigate ageism in medical students. METHODS By Brislin's translation guidelines, FSA was translated to Chinese. The convenient sampling method was used to select samples for this survey, including 1,974 students from two medical schools in central and north China. Construct validity was verified by the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The content validity index (CVI) was used to assess content validity. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to estimate reliability. RESULTS The alpha coefficients for FSA (Chinese version) was 0.81 and ICC was 0.87. The CVI was 0.93. Three factors were identified by exploratory factor analysis explaining 34.84% of the total variance and a three-factor model was confirmed to fit by confirmatory factor analysis. CONCLUSIONS FSA (Chinese version) is a reliable and valid scale for measuring discrimination degree against older adults in Chinese medical students.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the prognostic impact of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) on patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Method: Online search of MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM and other Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of NMBA in patients with ARDS from January 1994 to June 2019 was done, and literature was selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patients were divided into NMBA group and non-NMBA group according to whether NMBA was adopted or not. The prognostic indicators (ICU mortality, 28 d mortality, 90 d mortality) and NMBA-related complications (ICU acquired muscle weakness, barometric injury, pneumothorax) of the patients in the two groups were mainly analyzed. Meta-analysis of the data was performed using RevMan 5.0 software. Results: A total of 6 RCTs were included, and 1 502 patients were enrolled, including 761 in the NMBA group and 741 in the no-NMBA group. The 90-day mortality in the NMBA group and no-NMBA group were 38.8% and 42.6%, OR=0.87 (95%CI: 0.70-1.07, P=0.190); the 28-day mortality rates were 32.5% and 36.5%, OR=0.71 (95%CI: 0.45-1.11, P=0.130); ICU mortality rates were 31.8% and 43.8%, OR=0.60 (95%CI: 0.41-0.88, P=0.009). Conclusion: NMBA can reduce the ICU mortality of moderate to severe ARDS patients, but not reduce 28-day and 90-day mortality.

The Role of KLRG1 in Human CD4+ T-Cell Immunity Against Tuberculosis. J Infect Dis 2019; 217:1491-1503. Abstract
Background KLRG1 is a marker of terminally differentiated CD8+ T cells in viral infection, but its role in human Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection remains elusive. Methods A set of cohorts of patients with tuberculosis was designed, and the expression profiles and functions of KLRG1+CD4+ T cells were determined with and without antibody blocking. Results KLRG1 expression on CD4+ T cells was significantly increased in patients with active tuberculosis, compared with healthy controls and patients without tuberculosis. Upon M. tuberculosis-specific stimulation, the ability to secrete interferon γ, interleukin 2, and tumor necrosis factor α was significantly greater in KLRG1-expressing CD4+ T cells than in their KLRG-negative counterparts and was accompanied by a decreased proportion of regulatory T cells and increased Akt signaling. However, KLRG1-expressing CD4+ T cells had a shorter life-span, which was associated with a higher apoptosis rate but a similar proliferative response. Blockade of KLRG1 signaling significantly enhanced interferon γ and interleukin 2 secretion without affecting either cell apoptosis or multiplication. Addition of a specific Akt inhibitor prevented this increased cytokine response, implicating the Akt signaling pathway. Conclusions Our study delineated the profile of KLRG1+CD4+ T cells in patients with tuberculosis and suggests that M. tuberculosis infection drives CD4+ T cells to acquire increased effector function in a terminally differentiated state, which is restrained by KLRG1 via KLRG1/Akt signaling pathway.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the preoperative evaluation of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in early breast cancer patients and the involved disturbing factors. Methods: Eighty-three female early breast cancer patients who underwent concurrent surgery in the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University between January 2017 and May 2018 were enrolled. CEUS was used to seek SLN and determine lymph node metastasis after signature of preoperative informed consent. Rapid pathological examination was used to determine whether metastasis existed in SLN. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, the differences between CEUS and pathological results, and the involved disturbing factors were evaluated. Results: A total of 212 SLNs were detected by CEUS and SLN biopsy with an average of 2.6 SLNs detected per patient, including 39 SLNs with cancer metastasis (18.4%) and 173 SLNs without cancer metastasis (81.6%). Among the 83 patients, 29 patients were predicted SLN-positive preoperatively utilizing CEUS (including 21 cases with SLN pathological metastasis and 8 cases with non-metastasis), 54 patients were predicted SLN-negative (including 5 cases with SLN pathological metastasis and 49 cases with non-metastasis). The preoperative evaluation of SLN utilizing CEUS were performed with a sensitivity of 80.8% (21/26), specificity of 86.0% (49/57), positive predictive value of 72.4% (21/29), and negative predictive value of 90.7% (49/54), positive likelihood ratio of 5.75, negative likelihood ratio of 0.22, and the accuracy of 84.3% (70/83), respectively. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.834 (95% CI: 0.736-0.906). The primary tumor mean size of SLN-negative group predicted preoperatively utilizing CEUS was (1.78±0.14) cm, and that of the SLN positive group was (2.64±0.19) cm. The difference between the two groups was (0.86±0.24) cm with statistical significance (P=0.000 6). The SLN mean size of SLN-negative group (141 SLNs) was (1.41±0.05) cm and that of SLN-positive group (71 SLNs) was (1.69±0.07) cm. The difference between the two groups was (0.28±0.09) cm with statistical significance (P=0.002 8). Conclusions: Preoperative CEUS possesses the predictive value for SLN metastasis in early breast cancer. The predicted results may be influenced by the primary tumor size and the SLN size.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer and the leading cause of death in worldwide. MicroRNAs are known to be key players in a variety of biological processes, including tumorigenesis. In present study, we investigated the effect of miR-361-5p on lung cancer progression. We found that miR-361-5p was down-regulated in lung cancer. Overexpression of miR-361-5p suppressed lung cancer proliferation and invasion. Mechanistically, FOXM1 was identified as a direct target of miR-361-5p. Furthermore, miR-361-5p inhibits EMT-like phenotype through down-regulation of FOXM1 expression in lung cancer cells. In conclusion, our results indicated that miR-361-5p acts as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the implementation and understanding of pulmonary rehabilitation in medical personnel at all levels of medical institutions nationwide. Methods: We used WeChat and e-channels to disseminate e-questionnaires including personal basic information and the implementation of hospital pulmonary rehabilitation (including the setting up of hospital rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation-related treatment, and the composition of pulmonary rehabilitation teams), and awareness of pulmonary rehabilitation (including doctors' understanding of lung rehabilitation status, pathways, prospects, and obstacle factors). Finally, the analysis of the data was performed using SPSS 20.0 for statistical analysis. The frequency distribution and composition ratio were used to describe the distribution of each question item. Comparison among groups according to the unit level of the respondents was performed by chi-square test. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 921 medical staff from all over the country completed the survey, covering the entire country including Taiwan Province and a total of 32 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government. 88.1% of medical personnel reported that their hospitals had rehabilitation departments, the difference being statistically significant (P=0.001). Doctors could understand that the most important ways of pulmonary rehabilitation knowledge were the following: expert lectures (559, 60.69%), professional literature (541, 58.74%), professional books (442, 47.99%), pulmonary rehabilitation conference (392, 42.56%), the difference being statistically significant (all P<0.05).Among the factors that impeded the implementation of pulmonary rehabilitation, the top four were lack of talent (690, 74.92%), lack of education (645, 70.03%), lack of policy support (603, 65.47%), and lack of related equipments (578, 62.76%). Conclusions: The lower the level of the hospitals, the poor the implementation and cognitive status of pulmonary rehabilitation. Promoting the training of pulmonary rehabilitation personnel and strengthening the academic exchange of pulmonary rehabilitation were good ways to strengthen the implementation of pulmonary rehabilitation and improve the understanding of pulmonary rehabilitation.

Abstract
Previous data have revealed an association between eosinopenia and mortality of acute ischemic stroke. However, the relationship of eosinopenia with infarct volume, infection rate, and poor outcome of acute ischemic stroke is still unknown. The retrospective study included 421 patients (273 males, 65%; mean age, 68.0 ± 13.0 years) with first acute ischemic stroke who were hospitalized in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, China, from January 2017 to February 2018. Laboratory data, neuroimaging results, and modified Rankin Scale scores were collected. Patients were divided into four groups according to their eosinophil percentage level (< 0.4%, 0.4–1.1%, 1.1–2.3%, ≥ 2.3%). Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that the percentage of eosinophils was negatively correlated with infarct volume (rs = −0.514, P < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated that eosinopenia predicted a large infarct volume more accurately than neutrophilia; the area under curve was 0.906 and 0.876, respectively; a large infarct was considered as that with a diameter larger than 3 cm and involving more than two major arterial blood supply areas. Logistic regression analysis revealed that eosinophil percentage was an independent risk factor for acute ischemic stroke (P = 0.002). Moreover, eosinophil percentage was significantly associated with large infarct volume, high infection rate (pulmonary and urinary tract infections), and poor outcome (modified Rankin Scale score > 3) after adjusting for potential confounding factors (P-trend < 0.001). These findings suggest that eosinopenia has the potential to predict the severity of acute ischemic stroke. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, China (approval number: K10) on November 10, 2015.

Abstract
The IFN-γ release assays (IGRAs) based on region of difference 1 (RD1) antigens have improved diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. However, IGRAs with these antigens could not distinguish latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) from active tuberculosis (ATB). DosR regulon genes are thought to be important for Mtb dormancy, and their products have higher immunogenicity in LTBI than ATB individuals, suggesting protective immunity mediated by DosR regulon-encoded antigens and potential utility of them for differential diagnostics of Mtb-infected populations or development of therapeutic vaccines against tuberculosis (TB). Among them, Rv2028c is a dormancy-related antigen that has demonstrated potential use in TB control, but its immunological characteristics in the BCG-vaccinated Chinese population are unknown. In this study, a total of 148 individuals, including 98 patients with ATB, 20 cases with LTBI and 30 healthy controls, were tested for Rv2028c-specific T cell responses by using an IFN-γ ELISA assay. The results showed that the T-cell responses in LTBI individuals were almost always higher than those in ATB patients, regardless of the site of infection or the results of bacteriological examination in the patients. This allowed for good differentiation between these two groups of Mtb-infected individuals even in the BCG-vaccinated high TB-incidence setting that pertains in China. In addition, the diagnostic efficacy for ATB was enhanced by combining the results from Rv2028c and RD1 antigen-based IFN-γ ELISA assays. In conclusion, Rv2028c-specific T-cell responses might contribute to natural protection against dormant Mtb infection, and the determination of these responses can aid discrimination between healthy LTBI individuals and ATB patients in the Mtb-infected populations.

Abstract
Objective: To report the use of implantable diaphragm pacer (IDP) in a patient with high cervical spinal cord injury(HCSCI). Methods: A 14-year-old male patient, who suffered from a HCSCI at C2 neurological level and had been on a ventilator for 2 years, received IDP in August 2017 at China Rehabilitation Research Center. A systematic literature review was performed on IDP in patients with HCSCI in Pubmed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases, using the keywords: phrenic nerve and electrical stimulation and spinal cord injury; IDP and spinal cord injury; breathing pacemaker system and spinal cord injury. All fields were covered from 1970/01/01 to 2018/01/01 in Pubmed, from 1981/01/01 to 2018/01/01 in CNKI, and from 1900/01/01to 2018/01/01 in Wanfang. Results: No spontaneous breathing was observed preoperatively in the patient. The electrical response of phrenic nerves was intact on the right, but unresponsive on the left. We got started with the IDP at 4 weeks after surgery. The threshold voltage of the right hemidiaphragm pacing was 0.1 V and at the level of 0.7 V with an optimal effect. No significant diaphragmatic contraction was found at left side with the extent up till 0.7 V. The maximum tidal volume was 840 ml when electrical stimulation was given at an intensity of 0.7 V bilaterally. The bilateral stimulation voltage at 0.1-0.2 V, pacing frequencies at 9 beats/min in bed, or at 12 beats/min on wheelchair, were set to maintain the tidal volume at the level of (435±32) ml. After 2-week adaptive training, the patient could wean from the ventilator for 12 hours and had a normal blood gas analysis. At 6 week after surgery, with the aid of IDP, the patient could get out in wheelchair for outdoor activities. By literature review, we found 78 English papers, including 6 clinical trials, 10 reviews, and 11 Chinese papers, consisting of 8 reviews, 1 study in animal, and 2 news reports. Extensive contents, such as preoperative evaluation, preoperative preparation, surgical procedures, complications, surgical outcomes, and animal model studies of IDP were involved. The indications of IDP reported by literature were: (1) central alveolar hypoventilation; (2) Sleep apnea syndrome (Biot's respiration); (3) Respiratory failure induced by brainstem injury or disease; (4) Respiratory failure induced by spinal cord injury or disease above C3 level. Conclusion: Our case study confirmed the therapeutic effect of IDP on patients with respiratory failure caused by HCSCI.

Quantitative phase imaging system with slightly-off-axis configuration and suitable for objects both larger and smaller than the size of the image sensor. OPTICS EXPRESS 2018; 26:17199-17208. Abstract
We propose a quantitative phase imaging system with exact slightly-off-axis configuration and suitable for objects both smaller and larger than the size of the effective recording region of the image sensors. In this system, the object is illuminated by a convergent spherical beam and a specially designed aperture filter is placed on the spatial frequency plane of the object wave; at the same time, a point source emitting from the edge of the aperture is taken as the reference beam, so that the optimal frequency condition for reconstruction of slightly-off-axis digital holograms can be always guaranteed for both large and small objects as well as different magnification (or the field of view) configurations. At the same time, a 1x2 single-mode optical fiber splitter is used for generating the reference and the illumination beams. Benefited from such fiber-based slightly-off-axis design, the proposed system provides a low-cost way to convert a regular microscope into a slightly-off-axis holographic one for microbiological specimens with a high spatial resolution.

Evaluation of a New IFN-γ Release Assay for Rapid Diagnosis of Active Tuberculosis in a High-Incidence Setting. Front Cell Infect Microbiol 2017; 7:117. Abstract
Blood-based interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assays (IGRAs) have been proven to be useful in the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. However, IGRAs have not been recommended for clinical practice in most low-income settings due to cost-intensive limitations and shortage of clinical data available. The established T-SPOT. TB assay containing Mtb-specific antigens ESAT-6 and CFP10 are widely used for immunodiagonsis of Mtb infection, but the high cost is one of the restricting factors against its clinical application in the developing countries. More recently, a cost-saving IGRA assay, TS-SPOT, was approved in China. This new assay contains an additional antigen Rv3615c. Rv3615c contains broadly recognized CD4+ and CD8+ epitopes, and T-cell responses to Rv3615c are as specific for Mtb infection as the responses to ESAT-6 and CFP10 in both Mtb-infected humans and M. bovis-infected cattle. Therefore, we assessed the likely effect of inclusion of Rv3615c as stimulus besides ESAT-6 and CFP10 in an IGRA assay and evaluated the performance of TS-SPOT for diagnosis of Mtb infection and active TB compared with T-SPOT.TB. We tested 155 active TB patients, 90 non-TB lung disease patients, and 55 healthy individuals. The results presented an improved positive rate for diagnosis of active TB and Mtb infection, that could be attributable to inclusion of Rv3615c in the mixture of stimulatory antigens. The diagnostic efficiency of TS-SPOT assay for active TB was as follows: sensitivity 80.00%, specificity 83.45%, positive predictive value (PPV) 83.78%, negative predictive value (NPV) 83.45%, positive likelihood ratio (LR+) 4.83, and negative likelihood ratio (LR−) 0.24. The results were similar to those of T-SPOT.TB, with an excellent agreement (κ = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.85–0.95) being observed between these two assays. The sensitivities of the TS-SPOT assay varied for patients with different forms of active TB, with the highest sensitivity for patients with culture-positive pulmonary TB (92.16%) and the lowest for those with tuberculosis meningitis (50.00%). Taken together, the current evidence indicates that this new TS-SPOT assay is a useful adjunct to the current tests for rapid diagnosis of active TB and Mtb infection in low-income and high-incidence settings due to its characteristics of cost-effectiveness and high-quality.

Abstract
Objective: To study the relationship between morphological characteristics, grading, diagnosis and prognosis in phyllodes tumors (PT) of the breast. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on 83 PTs diagnosed between 1999 and 2003 that were classified semi-quantitatively according to the WHO recommendation. Follow-up data was available for some cases, and Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate factors affecting metastasis and recurrence. Results: All cases were classified into the benign (57.8%), borderline (28.9%) and malignant (13.3%). The overall recurrence rate for the 72 cases with follow-up data was 20.8% (15/72), and was 17.5% (7/40) in benign, 22.7% (5/22) in borderline and 3/10 in malignant PT, respectively, with no significant difference (P>0.05). The median interval between the initial diagnosis and the first recurrence was 24 months. Lung or bone metastases occurred in 1/22 borderline and 3/10 malignant PT patients 5 years post-surgery. The mitotic count and the degree of stromal cell atypia were significantly correlated with recurrence (P=0.001 and P=0.006). Multivariate analysis showed that severe stromal cell atypia was an independent predictor of recurrence-free survival in PT [HR=6.40 (95% CI=1.378 to 29.732), P=0.018]. Conclusions: Each parameter in the histological grading of PT may have different prognostic value, and markedly increased mitotic count and were predictive of relapse.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although coagulopathy can be very common in severe traumatic shock patients, the exact incidence and mechanism remain unclear. In this study, a traumatic shock rabbit model with special abdomen injuries was developed and evaluated by examining indicators of clotting and fibrinolysis. METHODS Forty New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: group 1 (sham), group 2 (hemorrhage), group 3 (hemorrhage-liver injury), and group 4 (hemorrhage-liver injury/intestinal injury-peritonitis). Coagulation was detected by thromboelastography before trauma (T0), at 1 hour (T1) and 4 hours (T2) after trauma. RESULTS Rabbits that suffered from hemorrhage alone did not differ in coagulation capacity compared with the sham group. The clot initiations (R times) of group 3 at T1 and T2 were both shorter than those of groups 1, 2, and 4 (P<0.05). In group 4, clot strength was decreased at T1 and T2 compared with those in groups 1, 2, and 3 (P<0.05), whereas the R time and clot polymerization were increased at T2 (P<0.05). The clotting angle significantly decreased in group 4 compared with groups 2 and 3 at T2 (P<0.05). CONCLUSION This study suggests that different abdominal traumatic shock show diverse coagulopathy in the early phase. Isolated hemorrhagic shock shows no obvious effect on coagulation. In contrast, blunt hepatic injury with hemorrhage shows hypercoagulability, whereas blunt hepatic injury with hemorrhage coupled with peritonitis caused by a ruptured intestine shows a tendency toward hypocoagulability.

Abstract
AIM To detect the expression of MTA1 and RECK in colonic polyps and colorectal carcinoma tissues, and to explore the role of MTA1 and RECK in the carcinogenesis of colonic polyps.
METHODS Immunochemical staining was used to detect the expression of MTA1 and RECK proteins in 104 cases of colorectal carcinoma, 114 cases of colonic polyps and 30 cases of normal colorectal mucosa.
RESULTS The positive expression rate of MTA1 gradually increased from normal colorectal mucosa to tubular adenoma, villous adenoma and colorectal carcinoma (P < 0.05). The positive expression rate of MTA1 in middle-severe dysplasia group was significantly higher than that in the mild dysplasia group in colonic polyps (P < 0.05). The expression rates of RECK were 100.00%, 78.57%, 77.27%, and 53.85% in normal colonic tissue, tubular adenoma, villous adenoma and colon carcinoma, respectively. The positive expression rate of RECK gradually decreased from normal colonic tissues to tubular adenoma, villous adenoma and colon carcinoma. The expression rate of RECK in the severe dysplasia group was significantly lower than that in the mild dysplasia group in colonic polyps (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION MTA1 is highly expressed in colorectal carcinoma, but the expression of RECK is absent. MTA1 and RECK may be involved in the carcinogenesis of colonic polyps.

Abstract
To improve the nutritional, physical and flavor properties of wheat bran, yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were used for fermenting wheat bran in solid state. Appearance properties, nutritional properties, microstructure, hydration properties and flavor of raw bran and fermented bran were evaluated. After treatments, water extractable arabinoxylans were 3-4 times higher than in raw bran. Total dietary fiber and soluble dietary fiber increased after solid state fermentation. Over 20% of phytic acid was degraded. Microstructure changes and protein degradation were observed in fermented brans. Water holding capacity and water retention capacity of fermented brans were improved. Results suggest that solid state fermentation is an effective way to improve the properties of wheat brans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) on mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction according to the type of revascularization. METHODS Recruited randomized controlled trials of IABP compared with no-IABP controls in acute myocardial infarction patients from January 1970 to May 2015 were searched from Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library, according to inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. These data were analyzed using the methods recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration's software RevMan 5.0. Revascularization included thrombolytic therapy, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or coronary artery bypass grafting. RESULTS (1) Eleven randomized controlled trials were enrolled for analysis with 1 102 patients in IABP group, 1 123 in no-IABP control group. (2) Compared with no-IABP control group, IABP could not significantly decrease the in-hospital or 30 day mortality (OR=0.84, 95%CI 0.65-1.09, P=0.20). (3)Compared with no-IABP control group, IABP could not significantly decrease the in-hospital or 30 day mortality in thrombolytic patients(OR=0.64, 95%CI 0.25-1.61, P=0.34), in PCI patients (OR=0.89, 95%CI 0.68-1.18, P=0.42), and in coronary artery bypass grafting patients(OR=0.46, 95%CI 0.13-1.63, P=0.23). (4)The difference reached borderline signiicance between no-IABP control group and IABP group in patients using IABP before PCI(OR=0.47, 95%CI 0.22-1.00, P=0.05), but not in case of after PCI(OR=1.33, 95%CI 0.63-2.79, P=0.45). CONCLUSIONS IABP does not decrease the in-hospital or 30 day mortality of acute myocardial infarction patients who received thrombolytic therapy, PCI, or coronary artery bypass grafting. But IABP might decreases the in-hospital or 30 day mortality in patients when used before PCI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials aimed to systematically evaluate the value of albuterol in the treatment of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). DATA SOURCES Randomized controlled trials on albuterol treatment of ARDS from its inception to October 2014 were searched systematically. The databases searched included: PubMed, Ovid EMBASE, Ovid Cochrane, CNKI, WANFANG and VIP. The trials were screened according to the pre-designed inclusion and exclusion criteria. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on albuterol treatment, attempting to improve outcomes, i.e. lowering the 28-day mortality and ventilator-free days. RESULTS Three RCTs involving 646 patients met the inclusion criteria. There was no significant decrease in the 28-day mortality (risk difference=0.09; P=0.07, P for heterogeneity=0.22, I (2)=33%). The ventilator-free days and organ failure-free days were significantly lower in the patients who received albuterol (mean difference=-2.20; P<0.001, P for heterogeneity=0.49, I (2)=0% and mean difference=-1.71, P<0.001, P for heterogeneity=0.60, I (2)=0%). CONCLUSIONS Current evidences indicate that treatment with albuterol in the early course of ARDS was not effective in increasing the survival, but significantly decreasing the ventilator-free days and organ failure-free days. Owing to the limited number of included trails, strong recommendations cannot be made.

Abstract
Acute cerebral hemorrhage (ACH) is an important clinical problem that is often
monitored and studied with expensive devices such as computed tomography,
magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. These devices are
not readily available in economically underdeveloped regions of the world,
emergency departments, and emergency zones. We have developed a less expensive
tool for non-contact monitoring of ACH. The system measures the magnetic
induction phase shift (MIPS) between the electromagnetic signals on two coils.
ACH was induced in 6 experimental rabbits and edema was induced in 4 control
rabbits by stereotactic methods, and their intracranial pressure and heart rate
were monitored for 1 h. Signals were continuously monitored for up to 1 h at an
exciting frequency of 10.7 MHz. Autologous blood was administered to the
experimental group, and saline to the control group (1 to 3 mL) by injection of
1-mL every 5 min. The results showed a significant increase in MIPS as a
function of the injection volume, but the heart rate was stable. In the
experimental (ACH) group, there was a statistically significant positive
correlation of the intracranial pressure and MIPS. The change of MIPS was
greater in the ACH group than in the control group. This high-sensitivity system
could detect a 1-mL change in blood volume. The MIPS was significantly related
to the intracranial pressure. This observation suggests that the method could be
valuable for detecting early warning signs in emergency medicine and critical
care units.

Abstract
Using poly (ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer (P123) as template and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica source, well-ordered cross-linked bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 was easily prepared via an one-pot synthetic strategy, where a pre-self-assembly of P123 with TEOS in strong acidic media was introduced followed by pH-adjusting. The pH-adjusting can effectively change the copolymer micelle size, which directly lead to the formation of the bimodal mesoporous structure at pH range of 6-7.5, with most typical value at pH = 7.5. Meanwhile, these bimodal mesopores are interconnected, which generates a 3D intra-particle porosity with many pore-openings on the surfaces of particles. After modified with tetraethylenepentamine, the as-synthesized bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 exhibited the CO2 adsorption capacities much higher than as-synthesized conventional SBA-15. These bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 materials have great potential application in CO2 capture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a colon cancer cell line with stable expression of carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA). METHODS Recombinant lentivirus conjugated with CEACAM5 cDNA were used to transfect wild CT26 cells. Antibiotics were given for 2 weeks to select CEA positive cells. A single transfected clone was obtained using limiting dilution. The 7th and 14th passages of cells cultured in vitro were detected for CEACAM5 mRNA by RT-PCR, and protein by western blot. The location of CEACAM5 expression was examined using fluorescent microscope and immunocytochemistry. The 14th passage cells were injected subcutaneously into mice to create BALB/c model and CEACAM5 protein was detected by in vivo fluorescence image analysis system and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS CEACAM5 mRNA and protein were found in the 7th and 14th passages of CT26CEA cells, which were proved to locate in the cytoplasm by fluorescence microscope and immunohistochemistry. Abundant CEACAM5 protein was found in subcutaneous tumors by in vivo fluorescence image analysis system and immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION Colon cancer cell line CT26 with stable expression of CEA in vitro and in mice can be used as a suitable tool to facilitate research on the impact and mechanism of CEA on colon cancer under normal immune environment.

Abstract
TiO2 and montmorillonite composite photocatalysts were prepared and applied in degrading gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH) in soils. After being spiked with gamma-HCH, soil samples loaded with the composite photocatalysts were exposed to UV-light irradiation. The results indicated that the photocatalytic activities of the composite photocatalysts varied with the content of TiO2 in the order of 10% < 70% < 50% < 30%. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of the composite photocatalysts with TiO2 content 30% was higher than that of the pure P25 with the same mass of TiO2. The strong adsorption capacity of the composite photocatalysts and quantum size effect may contribute to its increased photocatalytic activities. In addition, effect of dosage of composite photocatalysts and soil pH on gamma-HCH photodegradation was investigated. Pentachlorocyclohexene, trichlorocyclohexene, and dichlorobenzene were detected as photodegradation intermediates, which were gradually degraded with the photodegradation evolution.

Abstract
A novel process, microwave assisted catalytic wet air oxidation (MW-CWO), was applied for the degradation of H-acid (1-amino-8-naphthol-3, 6-disulfonic acid) in aqueous solution. Ni-loaded granular activated carbon (GAC), prepared by immersion-calcination method, was used as catalyst. The results showed that the MW-CWO process was very effective for the degradation of H-acid in aqueous solution under atmospheric pressure with 87.4% TOC (total organic carbon) reduction in 20 min. Ni on GAC existed in the form of NiO as specified by XRD. Loss of Ni was significant in the initial stage, and then remained almost constant after 20 min reaction. BET surface area results showed that the surface property of GAC after MW-CWO process was superior to that of blank GAC.

Photocatalytic remediation of gamma-HCH contaminated soil induced by alpha-Fe2O3 and TiO2. J Environ Sci (China) 2004; 16:938-41. Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of gamma-HCH on soil surfaces was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic effectiveness of alpha-Fe2O3 and TiO2 toward degrading gamma-HCH on soil surfaces. After being spiked with gamma-HCH, soil samples were loaded with alpha-Fe2O3 or TiO2 and exposed to UV-light irradiation. Different catalyst loads, 0%, 2%, 5%, 7%, and 10% (wt.) alpha-Fe2O3; 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2: (wt.)TiO2, were tested for up to 7 d irradiation. The effects of soil thickness, acidity, and humic substances were also investigated. The obtained results indicated that the gamma-HCH photodegradation follows the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The addition of alpha-Fe2O3 or TiO2 accelerates the photodegradation of gamma-HCH, while the photodegradation rate decreases when the content of alpha-Fe2O3 exceeds 7% (wt.). The degradation rate increases with the soil pH value. Humic substances inhibit the photocatalytic degradation of gamma-HCH. Pentachlorocyclohexene, tetrachlorocyclohexene, and trichlorobenzene are detected as photodegradation intermediates, which are gradually degraded with the photodegradation evolution.
