Abstract
The present study investigated serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentrations in relation to demographic factors, common habits (alcohol consumption and smoking) and metabolic abnormalities in an adult population-based survey including 460 individuals. Serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6, a marker of inflammation, were also determined. After adjusting for confounders, male sex was associated positively with IgA levels and negatively with IgM levels. Age was associated positively with IgA and IgG levels. Smoking was associated negatively with IgG levels. Heavy drinking was associated positively with IgA levels. Metabolic abnormalities (obesity and metabolic syndrome) were associated positively with IgA levels. Abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridaemia were the components of metabolic syndrome associated most strongly with serum IgA. Heavy drinkers with metabolic syndrome showed particularly high serum IgA levels. Serum IL-6 levels were correlated positively with IgA and IgG concentrations. It is concluded that sex, age, alcohol consumption, smoking and common metabolic abnormalities should be taken into account when interpreting serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM.

Abstract
We report a new, to our knowledge, technique for encoding amplitude information onto a phase-only filter with a single liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. In our approach we spatially modulate the phase that is encoded onto the filter and, consequently, spatially modify the diffraction efficiency of the filter. Light that is not diffracted into the first order is sent into the zero order, effectively allowing for amplitude modulation of either the first-order or the zero-order diffracted light. This technique has several applications in both optical pattern recognition and image processing, including amplitude modulation and inverse filters. Experimental results are included for the new technique.

Abstract
The emergence and global spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae is of great concern to health services worldwide. These bacteria are often resistant to all beta-lactam antibiotics and frequently co-resistant to most other antibiotics, leaving very few treatment options. The epidemiology is compounded by the diversity of carbapenem-hydrolysing enzymes and the ability of their genes to spread between different bacterial species. Difficulties are also encountered by laboratories when trying to detect carbapenemase production during routine diagnostic procedures due to an often heterogeneous expression of resistance. Some of the resistance genes are associated with successful clonal lineages which have a selective advantage in those hospitals where antimicrobial use is high and opportunities for transmission exist; others are more often associated with transmissible plasmids. A genetically distinct strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type (ST) 258 harbouring the K. pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPC) has been causing epidemics of national and international proportions. It follows the pathways of patient referrals, causing hospital outbreaks along the way. Simultaneously, diverse strains harbouring New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) are repeatedly being imported into Europe, commonly via patients with prior medical exposure in the Indian subcontinent. Since the nature and scale of carbapenem-non-susceptible Entrobacteriaceae as a threat to hospital patients in Europe remains unclear, a consultation of experts from 31 countries set out to identify the gaps in diagnostic and response capacity, to index the magnitude of carbapenem-non-susceptibility across Europe using a novel five-level staging system, and to provide elements of a strategy to combat this public health issue in a concerted manner.

Abstract
A collection of 2,209 isolates of six polysaccharide capsule types of Haemophilus influenzae, including 1,975 serotype b isolates recovered in 30 countries was characterized for electrophoretically demonstrable allele profiles at 17 metabolic enzyme loci. Two hundred eighty distinct multilocus genotypes were distinguished, and cluster analysis revealed two primary phylogenetic divisions. The population structure of encapsulated H. influenzae is clonal. Currently, most of the invasive disease worldwide is caused by serotype b strains of nine clones. Strains producing serotype c, e, and f capsules belong to single divisions and have no close genetic relationships to strains of other serotypes. Serotype a and b strains occur in both primary phylogenetic divisions, probably as a result of transfer and recombination of serotype-specific sequences of the cap region between clonal lineages. A close genetic relatedness between serotype d isolates and some strains of serotypes a and b was identified. There are strong patterns of geographic variation, on an intercontinental scale, in both the extent of genetic diversity and the clonal composition of populations of encapsulated strains. The analysis suggests that the present distribution of clones is, in part, related to patterns of racial or ethnic differentiation and historical demographic movements of the human host populations.

Abstract
Recent progress in deciphering the molecular basis of carcinogenesis is of utmost importance to the development of new anticancer strategies. To this end, it is essential to understand the regulation of both normal cell proliferation and its alterations in cancer cells. We have previously demonstrated that in ras-transformed cells there is an increased level of phosphorylcholine (PCho) resulting from a constitutive activation on choiline kinase (ChoK). The importance of ChoK for the regulation of cell proliferation has also been proposed since an inhibitor for this enzyme, hemicholinium-3 (HC-3), drastically reduces entry into the S phase after stimulation with growth factors. Here we report the synthesis of several new compounds which are highly specific inhibitors for ChoK, with up to 1000-fold or 600-fold increased inhibitory activity, compared to HC-3 under ex vivo or in vitro conditions respectively. These novel compounds also drastically reduce entry into the S phase after stimulation with specific growth factors. A more profound inhibition of cell proliferation was observed in ras-, src- and mos-transformed cells in the presence of ChoK inhibitors, compared to their parental, untransformed NIH3T3 cells. By contrast, this effect was not observed in fos-transformed cells. While ras, src and mos transformation is associated with elevated levels of ChoK activity, fos-induced transformation does not affect ChoK activity. The inhibitory effect on proliferation of the new compounds correlates with their ability to inhibit the production of phosphorylcholine in whole cells, a proposed novel second messenger for cell proliferation. These results strongly support a critical role of choline kinase in the regulation of cell growth and makes this enzyme a novel target for the design of new antiproliferative and anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Anaplasma species are obligate intracellular rickettsial pathogens transmitted by ticks with an impact on human and animal health. Anaplasma ovis infects sheep and goats in many regions of the world, and it can be diagnosed by different methods like Giemsa staining, PCR or competitive ELISA. In this study, a PCR based on the gene coding for major surface protein 4 (MSP-4) was used to examine field samples collected from sheep in different countries. Altogether, 1161 blood samples from Turkey (n = 830), Iraq (n = 195), Sudan (n = 96) and Portugal (n = 40) were examined, of which 31.4%, 66.6% 41.6% and 82.5%, respectively, were positive. This indicates high prevalence of A. ovis in the countries under investigation, and it can be assumed that the situation in other areas of the world might be similar. Thus, A. ovis should be considered as an important constraint of livestock production, and further efforts are needed to better understand the epidemiology and to implement suitable control measures.

Abstract
Glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase (GCDH) deficiency causes glutaric aciduria type I (GA I), an inborn error of metabolism that is characterized clinically by dystonia and dyskinesia and pathologically by neural degeneration of the caudate and putamen. Studies of metabolite excretion allowed us to categorize 43 GA I Spanish patients into two groups: group 1 (26 patients), those presenting with high excretion of both glutarate and 3-hydroxyglutarate, and group 2 (17 patients), those who might not be detected by routine urine organic acid analysis because glutarate might be normal and 3-hydroxyglutarate only slightly higher than controls. Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) screening and sequence analysis of the 11 exons and the corresponding intron boundaries of the GCDH gene allowed us to identify 13 novel and 10 previously described mutations. The most frequent mutations in group 1 were A293T and R402W with an allele frequency of 30% and 28%, respectively. These two mutations were also found in group 2, but always in heterozygosity, in particular in combination with mutations V400M or R227P. Interestingly, mutations V400M and R227P were only found in group 2, and at least one of these mutations was found in 11 of 15 unrelated alleles, accounting together for 53% of the mutant alleles in group 2. Therefore, it seems clear that two genetically and biochemically distinct groups of patients exist. The severity of the clinical phenotype seems to be closely linked to the development of encephalopathic crises rather than to residual enzyme activity or genotype. Comparison of GCDH protein with other acyl-CoA dehydrogenases (whose x-ray crystal structure has been determined) reveals that most of the mutations identified in GCDH protein seem to affect folding and tetramerization, as has been described for a number of mutations affecting mitochondrial beta-oxidation acyl-CoA dehydrogenases.

Abstract
The Hilbert transform is useful for image processing because it can select which edges of an input image are enhanced and to what degree the edge enhancement occurs. However, the transform operation is one dimensional and is not applicable for arbitrarily shaped two-dimensional objects. We introduce a radially symmetric Hilbert transform that permits two-dimensional edge enhancement. We implement one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and radial Hilbert transforms with a programmable phase-only liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. Experimental results are presented.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequences of the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the gyrA and parC genes from five ciprofloxacin-resistant strains of Haemophilus influenzae (MICs, 2 to 32 micrograms/ml) isolated from patients with cystic fibrosis and three ciprofloxacin-susceptible strains of H. influenzae (MICs, < or = 0.1 micrograms/ml) were determined. Four of the five resistant strains possessed at least one amino acid substitution in each of the GyrA and ParC fragments studied. The mutations identified in GyrA were a serine at residue 84 (Ser-84) to Leu or Tyr and Asp-88 to Asn or Tyr. ParC mutations were in positions exactly analogous to those identified in GyrA, namely, Ser-84 to Ile and Glu-88 to Lys. The Glu-88 to Lys ParC substitution was identified only in high-level ciprofloxacin-resistant strains. These mutations have been shown to be the origin of the observed resistance after transformation into ciprofloxacin-susceptible H. influenzae isolates. These results suggest that H. influenzae isolates require at least one amino acid substitution in both GyrA and ParC in order to attain significant levels of resistance to quinolones.

Abstract
European American, Japanese, and Chinese 11-month-olds participated in emotion-inducing laboratory procedures. Facial responses were scored with BabyFACS, an anatomically based coding system. Overall, Chinese infants were less expressive than European American and Japanese infants. On measures of smiling and crying, Chinese infants scored lower than European American infants, whereas Japanese infants were similar to the European American infants or fell between the two other groups. Results suggest that differences in expressivity between European American and Chinese infants are more robust than those between European American and Japanese infants and that Chinese and Japanese infants can differ significantly. Cross-cultural differences were also found for some specific brow, cheek, and midface facial actions (e.g., brows lowered). These are discussed in terms of current controversies about infant affective facial expressions.

Abstract
Bacillus strain QC1-2, isolated from a chromium-polluted zone, was selected by its high ability to both tolerate and reduce hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] to less-toxic trivalent chromium [Cr(III)]. Cell suspensions of strain QC1-2 rapidly reduced Cr(VI), in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, to Cr(III) which remained in the supernatant. Cr(VI) reduction was dependent on the addition of glucose but sulfate, an inhibitor of chromate transport, had no effect. Studies with permeabilized cells and cell extracts showed that the Cr(VI) reductase of strain QC1-2 is a soluble NADH-dependent enzyme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depigmentation of the substantia nigra (SN) and locus coeruleus (LC) is a conspicuous pathological feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) and is related to the loss of neuromelanin, whose paramagnetic properties result in high signal on specific T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Recent studies have suggested that neuromelanin decrease in the SN and LC of PD patients may emerge as a possible diagnostic biomarker. The SN neuromelanin signal in de novo and early stage PD patients was studied to assess its diagnostic accuracy. This is the first study based on a semi-automated MRI analysis of the neuromelanin signal in de novo PD patients. METHODS The inclusion criteria were untreated de novo PD and a 2-5 year disease duration; in addition, age matched healthy controls were enrolled. These were studied with a high-resolution T1-weighted MRI sequence at 3 T to visualize neuromelanin. The primary outcome was SN high signal area, length and neuromelanin/midbrain ratio obtained with semi-automated methods. RESULTS A total of 12 de novo PD patients and 10 PD patients with a 2-5 year disease duration were evaluated. The area, length of the SN T1 high signal and the SN neuromelanin/midbrain ratio were markedly decreased in the PD groups compared with age-matched controls, with a substantial overlap between the two PD groups. CONCLUSIONS Neuromelanin-sensitive MRI techniques can discriminate PD patients from healthy individuals with high sensitivity and specificity. Our findings are consistent with recent findings showing that PD neuromelanin changes remain stable during the course of the disease.

Abstract
Penicillin-resistant (penr) clinical isolates of Neisseria meningitidis, which do not produce beta-lactamase, were first identified in Spain in 1985; the frequency of their recovery, which has been increasing in the past few years, reached 20% in 1989. Serogrouping, determination of serotypes and subtypes, and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis of the penr strains showed an extensive diversity. Resistance is due, at least in part, to a decreased affinity of penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2 for penicillin. Similar low-affinity forms of PBP 2 are also found in penr isolates of Neisseria lactamica, Neisseria polysaccharea, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Genetic transformation of an N. meningitidis type strain to low-level penicillin resistance with DNA from resistant meningococci and other Neisseria species resulted in transformants that possessed low-affinity forms of PBP 2. These altered forms of PBP 2 have been shown to arise from recombinational events that replace parts of the PBP 2 gene with the corresponding regions from the PBP 2 genes of commensal Neisseria species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the MR imaging findings that occur between the posterior inferolateral patellar tendon and the lateral femoral condyle in patients with chronic anterior and or lateral knee pain. PATIENTS AND DESIGN A retrospective review of the MR images in 42 patients who presented with chronic anterior or lateral knee pain was performed by two musculoskeletal radiologists. In 15 patients, post-contrast images were available. RESULTS Sagittal and axial imaging planes best demonstrated the patellar tendon and its relationship with the lateral femoral condyle. In 40 patients, there was obliteration of the fat planes and abnormal signal intensity in the lateral soft tissues of the inferior patellofemoral joint. Enhancement after administration of gadolinium was noted in all cases in which contrast was administered. Eighteen patients showed cystic changes in the soft tissues adjacent to the lateral femoral condyle in addition to fat plane obliteration. In two patients, only cystic changes were noted in the lateral soft tissues. Abnormal patellar alignment was noted in 37 patients. Patellar tendon pathology was seen in nine patients. CONCLUSION In evaluating anterior knee symptoms, MR imaging allows identification of changes that may be related to patellar tendon-lateral femoral condyle friction syndrome and that should be distinguished from other causes of anterior or lateral knee pain.

Vibrio cholerae 638 (El Tor, Ogawa), a new CTXPhi-negative hemagglutinin/protease-defective strain that is a cholera vaccine candidate, was examined for safety and immunogenicity in healthy adult volunteers. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study, no significant adverse reactions were observed in volunteers ingesting strain 638. Four volunteers of 42 who ingested strain 638 and 1 of 14 who received placebo experienced loose stools. The strain strongly colonized the human small bowel, as evidenced by its isolation from the stools of 37 of 42 volunteers. V. cholerae 638, at doses ranging from 4 x 10(7) to 2 x 10(9) vibrios, elicited significant serum vibriocidal antibody and anti-Ogawa immunoglobulin A antibody secreting cell responses.

Abstract
We examined clinical isolates of Neisseria meningitidis relatively resistant to penicillin G (mean MIC, 0.3 micrograms/ml; range, 0.1 to 0.7 micrograms/ml), which were isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid for resistance mechanisms, by using susceptible isolates (mean MIC, less than or equal to 0.06 micrograms/ml) for comparison. The resistant strains did not produce detectable beta-lactamase activity, otherwise modify penicillin G, or bind less total penicillin. Penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 3 of the six resistant isolates tested uniformly bound less penicillin G in comparison to the same PBP of four susceptible isolates. Reflecting the reduced binding affinity of PBP 3 of the two resistant strains tested, the amount of 3H-labeled penicillin G required for half-maximal binding was increased in comparison with that of PBP 3 of the two susceptible isolates. We conclude that the mechanism of resistance in these meningococci relatively resistant to penicillin G was decreased affinity of PBP 3.

Abstract
Transient endometritis after breeding is necessary for clearance of bacteria and spermatozoa; however, in a subpopulation of mares, the inflammation fails to resolve in a timely fashion. The objective of this study was to describe the uterine inflammatory response in mares susceptible or resistant to persistent breeding-induced endometritis (PBIE) during the first 24 h after induction of uterine inflammation.Twelve mares were classified as susceptible (nZ6) or resistant (nZ6) to PBIE. Mares were inseminated over five estrous cycles and endometrial biopsies were collected at one time point per cycle before (0) and 2, 6, 12, and 24 h after insemination. qPCR analysis for IL1B, IL6, IL8, IFNG, TNF (TNFA), IL10, and IL1RN was performed, and endometrial inflammatory cells were counted for each sample. Relative quantification values reported fold changes in mRNA expression from 0 h values. A general pattern of expression post insemination was observed in both groups of mares. Cytokine mRNA increased at 2 h, peaked between 2 and 12 h, and then decreased.Differences were detected between groups of mares 6 h after challenge; resistant mares had higher mRNA expression of IL6, IL1RN,and IL10 than susceptible mares. Susceptible mares had an increased number of polymorphonuclear neutrophils in the endometrium 2 and 12 h after breeding when compared with resistant mares. These findings describe an inherent difference in the initial immune response to insemination and may help explain the transient nature of inflammation in resistant mares, whereas susceptible mares develop a persistent inflammation.

Abstract
From February 1981 to December 1983, 225 strains were isolated from pediatric patients infected with Haemophilus influenzae. Forty-one strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and other antibiotics. They were isolated from 20 patients with invasive diseases (meningitis, 16; bacteremia, 4) and 21 with noninvasive diseases (otitis media, 19; conjunctivitis, 2). During this period, 44 patients with invasive diseases were seen (meningitis, 28; bacteremia, 16). Strains resistant to both ampicillin and chloramphenicol occurred in 45.4% of cerebrospinal fluid and blood isolates and in 51% of cerebrospinal fluid isolates only. In this group, individual resistance to ampicillin was 50%; chloramphenicol, 52.2%; tetracycline, 54.5%; and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, 63.6%. No epidemiological relationship could be found among the patients. The presence of asymptomatic carriers was investigated in two nurseries and in eight family groups. From a total of 125 individuals studied, 80 were found to be colonized by H. influenzae, and 36 carried multiply resistant strains. From patients and carriers, 77 strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and other drugs; 39 belonged to type b (cerebrospinal fluid, 16; blood, 4; ear, 7; and nasopharynx, 12), and 38 were non-type b. The most frequent pattern of resistance was ampicillin-chloramphenicol-tetracycline-sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (94.8%), followed by ampicillin-chloramphenicol-tetracycline (3.9%). The disk diffusion method correctly predicted multiple resistance. The mean inhibition zone diameters were: ampicillin, 12.8 mm; chloramphenicol, 15.2 mm; tetracycline, 9.9 mm; and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, 10.8 mm. These resistant strains were susceptible to cefotaxime, moxalactam, cefoperazone, cefuroxime, rifampin, and gentamicin. Our data suggest that in Spain the resistance of H. influenzae to ampicillin and chloramphenicol is endemic and that other effective therapeutic modalities are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiography is usually recommended in perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage (PM SAH) to rule out a basilar artery aneurysm. However it is not known how often aneurysms are found among patients with a CT pattern of PM haemorrhage or the frequency of this CT pattern after rupture of posterior circulation aneurysms. METHOD CTs of all SAH caused by posterior circulation aneurysms admitted from 1/85 to 12/92 where reviewed by two examiners. Late (> 72h) examinations were excluded. The remaining CTs were classified in perimesencephalic (PM) or non PM. RESULTS 81 posterior circulation aneurysms were collected. Only one PM-like CT pattern was found, due to ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm (1.3%; 95% Cl (confidence intervals) = .03-6.7%). During the same period 37 PM SAH with negative angiographic results were admitted. The likelihood of finding an aneurysm in a patient with an early CT showing a PM distribution of haematic densities was 2.7% (95% Cl = .07-.14%). CONCLUSIONS Although the probability of finding an aneurysm in a SAH patient with a PM CT pattern is low, a complete 4-vessel angiogram must be obtained.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is the main cause of spine and hip fractures. Morbidity, mortality, and costs arising from hip fractures have been well documented. Thyroid hormones (TH) are widely prescribed, mainly in the elderly. Some studies (but not all) found a deleterious effect of suppressive TH therapy on bone mass. These conflicting data raised a controversy as to the safety of current prescribing and follow-up habits, which, in turn, raised major health-care issues. To look for a detrimental effect on bone of TH therapy, we performed a meta-analysis (by pooling standardized differences, using a fixed effect model) of all published controlled cross-sectional studies (41, including about 1250 patients) concerning the impact of TH therapy on bone mineral density (BMD). Studies with women receiving estrogen therapy were excluded a priori, as were studies with a high percentage of patients with postoperative hypoparathyroidism, when no separate data were available. We decided to stratify the data according to anatomical site, menopausal status, and suppressive or replacement TH therapy, resulting in 25 meta-analysis on 138 homogeneous subsets of data. The main sources of heterogensity between studies that we could identify were replacement or suppressive TH therapy, menopausal status, site (lumbar spine, femoral neck, Ward's triangle, greater trochanter, midshaft and distal radius, with various percentages of cortical bone), and history of hyperthyroidism, which has recently been found to impair bone mass in a large epidemiological survey. To improve homogeneity, we excluded a posteriori 102 patients from 3 studies, who had a past history of hyperthyroidism and separate BMD data, thus allowing assessment of the TH effect in almost all 25 subset meta-analyses. However, controls were usually not matched with cases for many factors influencing bone mass, such as body weight, age at menarche and at menopause, calcium dietary intake, smoking habits, alcohol intake, exercise, etc. For lumbar spine and hip (as for all other sites), suppressive TH therapy was associated with significant bone loss in postmenopausal women (but not in premenopausal women), whereas, conversely, replacement therapy was associated with bone loss in premenopausal women (spine and hip), but not in postmenopausal women. The detrimental effect of TH appeared more marked on cortical bone than on trabecular bone. Only a large long term prospective placebo-controlled trial of TH therapy (e.g. in benign nodules) evaluating BMD (and ideally fracture rate) would provide further insight into these issues.

Abstract
The subduction zone in northern Chile is a well-identified seismic gap that last ruptured in 1877. The moment magnitude (Mw) 8.1 Iquique earthquake of 1 April 2014 broke a highly coupled portion of this gap. To understand the seismicity preceding this event, we studied the location and mechanisms of the foreshocks and computed Global Positioning System (GPS) time series at stations located on shore. Seismicity off the coast of Iquique started to increase in January 2014. After 16 March, several Mw > 6 events occurred near the low-coupled zone. These events migrated northward for ~50 kilometers until the 1 April earthquake occurred. On 16 March, on-shore continuous GPS stations detected a westward motion that we model as a slow slip event situated in the same area where the mainshock occurred.

Abstract
A case of sepsis and meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis with relative resistance to penicillin occurred in North Carolina in August 1992. This isolate was relatively resistant due to decreased affinity of its penicillin-binding protein 2 for penicillin. Such isolates have been reported in Spain, elsewhere in Europe, in South Africa, and in Canada, but invasive disease caused by meningococcal isolates relatively resistant to penicillin was not recognized in the United States before a preliminary report of this case in October 1992. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently retrospectively identified 3 additional cases from 1991. A fifth case occurred in Kentucky in 1993. Surveillance studies of penicillin susceptibility of N. meningitidis isolates suggest such meningococci have existed sporadically in the past. Increases in prevalence and magnitude of penicillin resistance among strains of N. meningitidis would require reconsideration of current clinical practice with regard to treatment of meningococcal disease.

Abstract
The objectives were to: (1) investigate the associations of age and endometrial biopsy score with uterine fluid retention after insemination; and (2) determine if a strict classification of susceptibility to persistent breeding-induced endometritis (PBIE) based on biopsy score, endometrial cytology, and fluid retention after inseminations, is consistent over subsequent breeding seasons. In Experiment 1, 57 mares were inseminated with 10(9) freeze-killed sperm during estrus and evaluated for uterine fluid retention 48 h and 96 h after insemination. Comparisons were made between fluid retention and biopsy score or age. In Experiment 2, a subset of 14 mares was classified for susceptibility to persistent breeding-induced endometritis in two subsequent breeding seasons. Biopsy score and age were associated with fluid retention (P < 0.001). In addition, age was related to biopsy score (P < 0.001). Of the mares examined for susceptibility, 36% (5 of 14) changed status during subsequent seasons. Three mares changed to a more severe classification (intermediate to susceptible, or resistant to intermediate), whereas two mares changed to a less severe classification (susceptible to intermediate).
