Critical slowing down near the multiferroic phase transition in MnWO4

By using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the radio frequency and microwave range, we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the multiferroic chiral antiferromagnet MnWO_{4}. Above the multiferroic phase transition at T_{N2}≈12.6  K we observe a critical slowing of the corresponding magnetoelectric fluctuations resembling the soft-mode behavior in canonical ferroelectrics. This electric-field-driven excitation carries much less spectral weight than ordinary phonon modes. Also, the critical slowing down of this mode scales with an exponent larger than 1, which is expected for magnetic second-order phase transition scenarios. Therefore, the investigated dynamics have to be interpreted as the softening of an electrically active magnetic excitation, an electromagnon.

Polar and magnetic layered A-site and rock salt B-site-ordered NaLnFeWO6 (Ln = La, Nd) perovskites

We have expanded the double perovskite family of materials with the unusual combination of layered order in the A sublattice and rock salt order over the B sublattice to compounds NaLaFeWO6 and NaNdFeWO6. The materials have been synthesized and studied by powder X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, electron diffraction, magnetic measurements, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, dielectric measurements, and second harmonic generation. At room temperature, the crystal structures of both compounds can be defined in the noncentrosymmetric monoclinic P2(1) space group resulting from the combination of ordering both in the A and B sublattices, the distortion of the cell due to tilting of the octahedra, and the displacement of certain cations. The magnetic studies show that both compounds are ordered antiferromagnetically below T(N) ≈ 25 K for NaLaFeWO6 and at ∼21 K for NaNdFeWO6. The magnetic structure of NaNdFeWO6 has been solved with a propagation vector k = ((1/2) 0 (1/2)) as an antiferromagnetic arrangement of Fe and Nd moments. Although the samples are potential multiferroics, the dielectric measurements do not show a ferroelectric response.

Dielectric properties of charge-ordered LuFe(2)O(4) revisited: the apparent influence of contacts

We show results of broadband dielectric measurements on the charge ordered, proposed to be multiferroic material LuFe(2)O(4). The temperature and frequency dependence of the complex permittivity as investigated for temperatures above and below the charge-order transition near T(CO)≈320  K and for frequencies up to 1 GHz can be well described by a standard equivalent-circuit model considering Maxwell-Wagner-type contacts and hopping induced ac conductivity. No pronounced contribution of intrinsic dipolar polarization could be found, and thus the ferroelectric character of the charge order in LuFe(2)O(4) has to be questioned.

Dimerization and charge order in hollandite K₂V₈O₁₆

The metal-insulator transition occurring in hollandite K₂V₈O₁₆ has been studied by means of neutron and x-ray diffraction as well as by thermodynamic and electron-spin resonance measurements. The complete analysis of the crystal structure in the distorted phase allows us to identify dimerization as the main distortion element in insulating K₂V₈O₁₆. At low-temperature, half of the V chains are dimerized perfectly explaining the suppression of magnetic susceptibility due to the formation of spin singlets. The dimerization is accompanied by the segregation of charges into chains.

Relaxations as key to the magnetocapacitive effects in the perovskite manganites

We present a detailed dielectric study of the relaxation effects that occur in several perovskite rare-earth manganites, including the multiferroics TbMnO(3) and DyMnO(3). We demonstrate that the strong magnetocapacitive effects, observed for electrical fields E parallel c, are nearly completely governed by magnetic-state induced changes of the relaxation parameters. The multiferroic materials, which undergo a transition into a spiral magnetic state, show qualitatively different relaxation behavior than those compounds transferring into an A-type antiferromagnetic state. We ascribe the relaxations in both cases to the off-center motion of the manganese ions, which in the multiferroic systems also leads to the ferroelectric ordering.

Large magnetostriction and negative thermal expansion in the frustrated antiferromagnet ZnCr2Se4

A detailed investigation of ZnCr2Se4 is presented which is dominated by strong ferromagnetic exchange but orders antiferromagnetically at TN=21 K. Specific heat and thermal expansion exhibit sharp first-order anomalies at the antiferromagnetic transition. TN is shifted to lower temperatures by external magnetic fields and finally is fully suppressed by a field of 65 kOe. The relative length change DeltaL/L(T) is unusually large and exhibits negative thermal expansion alpha below 75 K down to TN indicating strong frustration of the lattice. Magnetostriction DeltaL/L(H) reveals large values comparable to giant magnetostrictive materials. These results point to a spin-driven origin of the structural instability at TN explained in terms of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions.

Spin-driven phonon splitting in bond-frustrated ZnCr2S4

Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, and IR spectroscopy provide experimental evidence that the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions in ZnCr2S4 at TN1 = 15 K and TN2 = 8 K are accompanied by significant thermal and phonon anomalies. The anomaly at TN2 reveals a temperature hysteresis typical for a first-order transformation. Because of strong spin-phonon coupling, both magnetic transitions at TN1 and TN2 induce a splitting of phonon modes. The anomalies and phonon splitting observed at TN2 are suppressed by strong magnetic field. Regarding the small positive Curie-Weiss temperature Theta approximately 8 K, we argue that this scenario of two different magnetic phases with different magnetoelastic couplings results from the strong competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange.

(31)P NMR study of Na(2)CuP(2)O(7): an S = 1/2 two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system

The magnetic properties of Na(2)CuP(2)O(7) were investigated by means of (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. We report the (31)P NMR shift, the spin-lattice [Formula: see text], and spin-spin (1/T(2)) relaxation rate data as a function of temperature T. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift K(T) is well described by the S = 1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model with an intraplanar exchange of [Formula: see text] K and a hyperfine coupling A = 3533 ± 185 Oe /μ(B). The (31)P NMR spectrum was found to broaden abruptly below T∼10 K, signifying some kind of transition. However, no anomaly was noticed in the bulk susceptibility data down to 1.8 K. The heat capacity appears to have a weak maximum around 10 K. With decrease in temperature, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T(1) decreases monotonically and appears to agree well with the high temperature series expansion expression for a S = 1/2 2D square lattice.

Colossal magnetocapacitance and colossal magnetoresistance in HgCr2S4

We present a detailed study of the dielectric and charge transport properties of the antiferromagnetic cubic spinel HgCr2S4. Similar to the findings in ferromagnetic CdCr2S4, the dielectric constant of HgCr2S4 becomes strongly enhanced in the region below 60-80 K, which can be ascribed to polar relaxational dynamics triggered by the onset of ferromagnetic correlations. In addition, the observation of polarization hysteresis curves indicates the development of ferroelectric order below about 70 K. Moreover, our investigations in external magnetic fields up to 5 T reveal the simultaneous occurrence of magnetocapacitance and magnetoresistance of truly colossal magnitudes in this material.

Giant dielectric response in the one-dimensional charge-ordered semiconductor (NbSe4)3I

We report on broadband dielectric spectroscopy on the one-dimensional semiconductor (NbSe4)3I. Below the structural phase transition close to 270 K, which is accompanied by complex charge-order processes, we observe colossal dielectric constants with a frequency and temperature dependence very similar to what is observed in charge-density wave systems.

Observation of a griffiths phase in paramagnetic La1-xSrxMnO3

We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase.

Relaxor ferroelectricity and colossal magnetocapacitive coupling in ferromagnetic CdCr2S4

Materials in which magnetic and electric order coexist--termed 'multiferroics' or 'magnetoelectrics'--have recently become the focus of much research. In particular, the simultaneous occurrence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, combined with an intimate coupling of magnetization and polarization via magnetocapacitive effects, holds promise for new generations of electronic devices. Here we present measurements on a simple cubic spinel compound with unusual, and potentially useful, magnetic and electric properties: it shows ferromagnetic order coexisting with relaxor ferroelectricity (a ferroelectric cluster state with a smeared-out phase transition), both having sizable ordering temperatures and moments. Close to the ferromagnetic ordering temperature, the magnetocapacitive coupling (characterized by a variation of the dielectric constant in an external magnetic field) reaches colossal values, approaching 500 per cent. We attribute the relaxor properties to geometric frustration, which is well known for magnetic moments but here is found to impede long-range order of the structural degrees of freedom that drive the formation of the ferroelectric state.

Orbital freezing and orbital glass state in FeCr2S4

Low-temperature specific heat measurements and dielectric spectroscopy have been performed on polycrystalline and single-crystalline FeCr2S4, the single crystals showing a transition into a low-temperature orbital glass phase. The freezing of the orbital moments is revealed by a glasslike specific heat anomaly and by a clear relaxational behavior of the dielectric permittivity, exhibiting several hallmark features of glassy dynamics. The orbital relaxation dynamics continuously slows down over six decades in time, before at the lowest temperatures the glass transition becomes suppressed by quantum tunneling.

Spin and orbital frustration in MnSc2S4 and FeSc2S4

Crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat were measured in the normal cubic spinel compounds MnSc2S4 and FeSc2S4. Down to the lowest temperatures, both compounds remain cubic and reveal strong magnetic frustration. Specifically the Fe compound is characterized by a Curie-Weiss (CW) temperature ThetaCW = -45 K and does not show any indications of order down to 50 mK. In addition, the Jahn-Teller ion Fe2+ is orbitally frustrated. Hence, FeSc2S4 belongs to the rare class of spin-orbital liquids. MnSc2S4 is a spin liquid for temperatures T>TN approximately 2 K.

Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO3

LaTiO3 is known as a Mott insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at T(N)=146 K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity, electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single crystals. At T(N) significant structural changes appear, which are volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the dc resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret these experimental observations as evidence of orbital order.

A protein from the salivary glands of the giant Amazon leech with high sequence homology to a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit

A gene coding for a soluble protein with homology to the beta subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from goldfish was isolated from a cDNA library of Haementeria ghilianii salivary glands. Comparison of the leech protein sequence with the database showed that the N terminus has high homology with the extracellular portion of acetylcholine receptor beta subunits, whilst the C terminus, highly charged, has homology to proteins which may be involved in chelating divalent cations. The leech protein was expressed in mammalian cells and the product compared to the native protein. Both proteins are glycosylated and form polymers which are disrupted by heat but not by reducing agents. A role for this protein in salivary gland secretion is suggested.

Studies on the enzymatic reduction of N-Boc-4S-amino-3-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid methylester

The enzymatic reduction of N-Boc-4S-amino-3-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid methylester, the key intermediate in the stereoselective synthesis of a statinanalogue, was studied with Hansenula anomala and Hansenula silvicola. Using whole cells of H. anomala gives complete conversion and a diastereomeric excess of 88% of the desired 3S, 4S statinanalogue. The strain contains two NADPH-dependent oxidoreductases, that can be separated by ion exchange chromatography or gelfiltration, yielding the 3S, 4S or 3R, 4S stereoisomers, respectively, with > 99% diastereomeric excess (DE). In the crude extract the 3S, 4S oxidoreductase is very unstable and could be purified with << 1% yield only. In contrast, H. silvicola, which gave poor conversions using whole cells, exhibited about 80-fold higher specific activity in the crude extract than H. anomala. The NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase was purified 317-fold in 12% yield. A single enzyme of 54 kDa reduces the substrate with 97.4% DE. Besides the statinanalogue a wide range of other compounds could be reduced, most notably diones and chinones such as isatin or campherchinone. It was demonstrated that the enzymes often discussed for the reduction of beta-ketoesters with yeast e.g. L-3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.35), the beta-ketoreductase of the fatty acid synthase complex and also the 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.34) are separated during the purification steps from the oxidoreductase acting on N-Boc-4S-amino-3-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid methylester. The physiological role of the new enzyme is still unknown.
