Abstract
Single cells were recorded in the visual cortex of monkeys trained to attend to stimuli at one location in the visual field and ignore stimuli at another. When both locations were within the receptive field of a cell in prestriate area V4 or the inferior temporal cortex, the response to the unattended stimulus was dramatically reduced. Cells in the striate cortex were unaffected by attention. The filtering of irrelevant information from the receptive fields of extrastriate neurons may underlie the ability to identify and remember the properties of a particular object out of the many that may be represented on the retina.

Abstract
A small number of rare, recurrent genomic copy number variants (CNVs) are known to substantially increase susceptibility to schizophrenia. As a consequence of the low fecundity in people with schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental phenotypes to which these CNVs contribute, CNVs with large effects on risk are likely to be rapidly removed from the population by natural selection. Accordingly, such CNVs must frequently occur as recurrent de novo mutations. In a sample of 662 schizophrenia proband-parent trios, we found that rare de novo CNV mutations were significantly more frequent in cases (5.1% all cases, 5.5% family history negative) compared with 2.2% among 2623 controls, confirming the involvement of de novo CNVs in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Eight de novo CNVs occurred at four known schizophrenia loci (3q29, 15q11.2, 15q13.3 and 16p11.2). De novo CNVs of known pathogenic significance in other genomic disorders were also observed, including deletion at the TAR (thrombocytopenia absent radius) region on 1q21.1 and duplication at the WBS (Williams-Beuren syndrome) region at 7q11.23. Multiple de novos spanned genes encoding members of the DLG (discs large) family of membrane-associated guanylate kinases (MAGUKs) that are components of the postsynaptic density (PSD). Two de novos also affected EHMT1, a histone methyl transferase known to directly regulate DLG family members. Using a systems biology approach and merging novel CNV and proteomics data sets, systematic analysis of synaptic protein complexes showed that, compared with control CNVs, case de novos were significantly enriched for the PSD proteome (P=1.72 × 10⁻⁶. This was largely explained by enrichment for members of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) (P=4.24 × 10⁻⁶) and neuronal activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (ARC) (P=3.78 × 10⁻⁸) postsynaptic signalling complexes. In an analysis of 18 492 subjects (7907 cases and 10 585 controls), case CNVs were enriched for members of the NMDAR complex (P=0.0015) but not ARC (P=0.14). Our data indicate that defects in NMDAR postsynaptic signalling and, possibly, ARC complexes, which are known to be important in synaptic plasticity and cognition, play a significant role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Single cells were recorded from cortical area V4 of two rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) trained on a visual discrimination task with two levels of difficulty. Behavioral evidence indicated that the monkeys' discriminative abilities improved when the task was made more difficult. Correspondingly, neuronal responses to stimuli became larger and more selective in the difficult task. A control experiment demonstrated that changes in general arousal could not account for the effects of task difficulty on neuronal responses. It is concluded that increasing the amount of attention directed toward a stimulus can enhance the responsiveness and selectivity of the neurons that process it.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an immune-mediated syndrome caused by heparin. Complications range from thrombocytopenia to thrombocytopenia with thrombosis. We report a prospective, historical- controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of argatroban, a direct thrombin inhibitor, as anticoagulant therapy in patients with HIT or HIT with thrombosis syndrome (HITTS). METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with HIT (isolated thrombocytopenia, n=160) or HITTS (n=144) received 2 microgram. kg(-1). min(-1) IV argatroban, adjusted to maintain the activated partial thromboplastin time 1.5 to 3.0 times baseline value. Treatment was maintained for 6 days, on average. Clinical outcomes over 37 days were compared with those of 193 historical control subjects with HIT (n=147) or HITTS (n=46). The incidence of the primary efficacy end point, a composite of all-cause death, all-cause amputation, or new thrombosis, was reduced significantly in argatroban-treated patients versus control subjects with HIT (25.6% versus 38.8%, P=0.014). In HITTS, the composite incidence in argatroban-treated patients was 43.8% versus 56.5% in control subjects (P=0.13). Significant between-group differences by time-to-event analysis of the composite end point favored argatroban treatment in HIT (P=0.010) and HITTS (P=0.014). Argatroban therapy, relative to control subjects, also significantly reduced new thrombosis and death caused by thrombosis (P<0.05). Argatroban-treated patients achieved therapeutic activated partial thromboplastin times generally within 4 to 5 hours of starting therapy and, compared with control subjects, had a significantly more rapid rise in platelet counts (P=0.0001). Bleeding events were similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS Argatroban anticoagulation, compared with historical control subjects, improves clinical outcomes in patients who have heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, without increasing bleeding risk.

Abstract
We randomly assigned 230 patients in sinus rhythm with moderately severe heart failure to treatment with digoxin, milrinone, both, or placebo. The effects of each were compared during a 12-week, double-blind trial. Treatment with milrinone or digoxin significantly increased treadmill exercise time as compared with placebo (by 82 and 64 seconds respectively; 95 percent confidence limits, 44 and 123, and 30 and 100). Both treatments reduced the frequency of decompensation from heart failure, from 47 percent with placebo to 34 percent with milrinone (P less than 0.05; 95 percent confidence limits, 22 and 46) and 15 percent with digoxin (P less than 0.01; 95 percent confidence limits, 7 and 26). However, the clinical condition of 20 percent of the patients taking milrinone deteriorated within two weeks after treatment was begun, as compared with only 3 percent of those taking digoxin (P less than 0.05). The left ventricular ejection fraction at rest was not significantly changed by milrinone (+0.2 percent; 95 percent confidence limits, -1.5 and 1.9), but it was increased by digoxin (+1.7 percent; P less than 0.01; 95 percent confidence limits, -0.03 and 3.4) and decreased by placebo (-2.0 percent; 95 percent confidence limits, -3.8 and -0.1). Three-month survival was related inversely to the base-line ejection fraction. Analysis of mortality from all causes according to the intention to treat suggested an adverse effect of milrinone (P = 0.064). After adjustment for an excess of patients with lower ejection fractions randomly assigned to receive milrinone, this trend was not significant (P = 0.26). Increased ventricular arrhythmias occurred more frequently in patients who received milrinone than in those who did not (18 vs. 4 percent; P less than 0.03). We conclude that milrinone significantly increased exercise tolerance and reduced the frequency of worsened heart failure. However, in the population of patients studied, milrinone or the combination of milrinone and digoxin offered no advantage over digoxin alone. Furthermore, our data suggest that milrinone may aggravate ventricular arrhythmias.

This study examines whether the cognitive and affective components of self-reflection can be dissociated using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Using a simple paradigm in which subjects judged the personal relevance of personality characteristics that were either favorable (e.g., “honest”) or unfavorable (e.g., “lazy”, we found that distinct neural circuits in adjacent regions of the prefrontal cortex subserve cognitive and emotional aspects of self-reflection. The medial prefrontal cortex responded only to material that was self-descriptive, and this did not differ as a function of the valence of the trait. When material was judged to be self-relevant, the valence of the material was resolved in an adjacent region of ventral anterior cingulate. The nature of self is one of the most enduring questions in science, and researchers are now beginning to be able to decompose the neural operations that give rise to a unitary sense of self.

Abstract
The corticocortical pathway from striate cortex into the temporal lobe plays a crucial role in the visual recognition of objects. Anatomical studies indicate that this pathway is mainly organized as a serial hierarchy of multiple visual areas, including V1, V2, V3, V4, and inferior temporal cortex (IT). As expected from the anatomy, we have found that neurons in V4 and IT, like those in V1 and V2, are sensitive to many kinds of information relevant to object recognition. In the spatial domain, many V4 cells exhibit length, width, orientation, direction of motion and spatial frequency selectivity. In the spectral domain, many V4 cells are also tuned to wavelength. Thus, V4 is not specialized to analyze one particular attribute of a visual stimulus; rather, V4 appears to process both spatial and spectral information in parallel. A special contribution of V4 neurons to visual processing may lie in specific spatial and spectral interactions between their small excitatory receptive fields and large silent suppressive surrounds. Thus, although the excitatory receptive fields of V4 neurons are small, the responses of V4 neurons are influenced by stimuli throughout a much larger portion of the visual field. In IT, neurons also appear to process both spatial and spectral information throughout a large portion of the visual field. However, unlike V4 neurons, the excitatory receptive fields of IT neurons are very large. Many IT neurons, for example, are selective for the overall shape, color, or texture of a stimulus, anywhere within the central visual field. Together, these results suggest that within the areas of the occipito-temporal pathway, many different stimulus qualities are processed in parallel, but the type of analysis may become more global at each stage of processing.

Abstract
Bovine vascular endothelial cells do not grow when cultured at low density unless fibroblast growth factor is included in the culture medium. When endothelial cells obtained from the intimal surface of fetal and adult aortas were seeded at low density (8 cells per cm2), they formed small colonies of large, irregular, vacuolated cells. At very low density (0.3 cells per cm2) they did not survive. The addition of fibroblast growth factor to endothelial cells maintained at such low densities resulted in the formation of vigorously growing colonies of small, uniform cells. Electron microscopy showed that the cultured endothelial cells had the fine structure characteristics of endothelial cells. Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed antihemophilic factor (Factor VIII) antigen in the cells. Our results demonstrated that fibroblast growth factor permits the survival of endothelial cells plated at extremely low cell density. With the use of fibroblast growth factor, endothelial cell clones are easily produced.

Abstract
The results of a morphometric study of selected human vertebrae undertaken to provide data for implant design are presented in this report. Twenty-seven dimensions were measured from thoracic (T2, T7, T12) and lumbar (L1-L5) vertebrae using prepared spinal columns from 30 skeletons belonging to the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection. Maximum and minimum pedicle dimensions indicated that the pedicles are less symmetric cephalad than they are caudal. Vertebral body height increases caudally except posteriorly where, after an initial increase, it decreases in the lower lumbar region. Major and minor body diameters and the major spinal canal diameter slightly increase caudally, whereas minor spinal canal diameter exhibits little or no change.

Abstract
Recent registry studies comparing mortality between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients show conflicting results. The purpose of this study is to determine whether previously published results showing higher mortality for patients treated with PD versus HD in the United States continue to hold true over the period 1987-1993. National mortality rates for PD and HD were extracted from the U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS) annual reports for the cohort periods: 1987-1989, 1988-1990, 1989-1991, 1990-1992, and 1991-1993. Using Poisson regression, death rates per 100 patient years were compared between PD and HD for each cohort period controlling for age, gender, race, and cause of end-stage renal disease (diabetes versus nondiabetes). When incident patients and patients with a prior transplant were included in the analysis, starting with the 1989-1991 cohort, we found little or no difference in the relative risk (RR PD:HD) of death between PD and HD (1987-1989: RR = 1.17, P < 0.001; 1988-1990: RR = 1.12, P < 0.001; 1989-1991: RR = 1.06, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.06, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.08, P = 0.043). After a test for goodness-of-fit, separate analyses for diabetic patients and nondiabetic patients were done to examine unexplained variation in death rates. For nondiabetic patients, there was less than a 1% difference in the adjusted 1-yr survival between PD and HD from 1989-1993 (1989-1991: RR = 1.05, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.04, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.07, P < 0.01). Among diabetic patients, the PD:HD death rate ratio varied significantly according to gender and age. For the average male diabetic patient, there was little or no difference in risk between PD and HD from 1989-1993 (1989-1991: RR = 1.02, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.05, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.08, P < 0.01). For diabetic patients under the age of 50, those treated with PD had a significantly lower risk of death than those treated with HD (1989-1993: 0.84 < or = RR < or = 0.89, P < 0.005). Over the same period, female diabetic patients treated with PD had a higher risk, on average, than HD (1.18 < or = RR < or = 1.19, P < 0.001) as did diabetic patients over the age 50 (1.28 < or = RR < or = 1.30, P < 0.001). Unlike previously published results that were restricted to prevalent-only patients, this national study of both prevalent and incident patients found little or no difference in overall mortality between PD and HD. The recent trends in mortality likely reflect the inclusion of incident patients, but they may also reflect changes in case-mix differences and/or improved PD practice. Additional incident-based studies that allow for additional case-mix adjustments are needed to better compare outcomes between HD and PD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if toddlers who were considered "picky eaters" had lower dietary scores than non-picky eaters, and if family environment and socioeconomic status were significantly related to picky eater status and dietary scores. METHODS An incomplete block design provided two interviews at randomly assigned times (24, 28, 32, or 36 months) of Caucasian mothers from upper socioeconomic (n=74) and lower socioeconomic status (n=44). Using trained interviewers, 6 days of food intake, two administrations of a questionnaire about toddler's eating behavior, and one administration of the Family Environment Scales were collected in the home. MANOVA, discriminant function analysis, and logistic regression procedures were used to determine significant differences between picky and non-picky eater groups. RESULTS Picky eaters had lower dietary variety (p=.03) and diversity scores (p=.009) than non-picky eaters. Mothers of picky eaters compared to those of non-picky eaters used persuasion (p=.0001) and ranked their child's eating behaviors as more problematic (p=.0001). CONCLUSION Toddlers perceived by their mothers as picky eaters had significantly lower dietary variety and diversity scores. Parents need information and strategies to increase the number of foods acceptable to their toddlers and to develop a sound feeding plan.

Abstract
As a result of the low yield of cartilage from primary patient harvests and a high demand for autologous cartilage for reconstructive surgery and structural repair, primary explant cartilage must be augmented by tissue engineering techniques. In this study, chondrocytes seeded on PLLA/PGA scaffolds in static culture and a direct perfusion bioreactor were biochemically and histologically analyzed to determine the effects of fluid flow and media pH on matrix assembly. A gradual media pH change was maintained in the bioreactor within 7.4-6.96 over 2 weeks compared to a more rapid decrease from 7.4 to 6.58 in static culture over 3 days. Seeded scaffolds subjected to 1 microm/s flow demonstrated a 118% increase (p < 0.05) in DNA content, a 184% increase (p < 0.05) in GAG content, and a 155% (p < 0.05) increase in hydroxyproline content compared to static culture. Distinct differences were noted in tissue morphology, including more intense staining for proteoglycans by safranin-O and alignment of cells in the direction of media flow. Culture of chondrocyte seeded matrices thus offers the possibility of rapid in vitro expansion of donor cartilage for the repair of structural defects, tracheal injury, and vascularized tissue damage.

Abstract
Direct measurement of the reticulocyte hemoglobin content provides useful information for the diagnosis and treatment of iron-deficient states. We have examined direct measurements of reticulocyte and red cell hemoglobin content on the Sysmex XE 2100 (Ret He and RBC He respectively) and the Bayer ADVIA 2120 (CHr and CH respectively) analyzers. Good agreement was found between Ret He and CHr (Y = 1.04X - 1.06; r2= 0.88) and between the RBC He and CH parameters (Y = 0.93X + 1; r2= 0.84 n = 200) in pediatric patients and in normal adults (Ret He and CHr; Y = 1.06X - 0.43; r2= 0.83; n = 126; RBC He and CH; Y = 0.94X + 1; r2= 0.87; n = 126). In 1500 blood samples from patients on chronic dialysis, Ret He was compared with traditional parameters for iron deficiency (serum iron <40 microg/dl, Tsat <20%, ferritin <100 ng/ml, hemoglobin <11 g/dl) for identifying iron-deficient states. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed values of the area under the curve for Ret He of 0.913 (P < 0.0001). With a Ret He cutoff level of 27.2 pg, iron deficiency could be diagnosed with a sensitivity of 93.3%, and a specificity of 83.2%. Ret He is a reliable marker of cellular hemoglobin content and can be used to identify the presence of iron-deficient states.

Abstract
A peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution containing 1.1% amino acids as the osmotic agent was evaluated in a 3-month randomized, prospective, open-label study in malnourished PD patients. Patients in the treatment group (DAA) received one or two exchanges daily with the amino acid solution, depending on tolerance, in place of glucose solutions. Controls (DD) received their usual therapy with glucose dialysate. Fifty-four DAA and 51 DD patients completed the study. In DAA, but not in DD patients, there was a significant increase at month 3 in serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels and significant decreases in serum potassium (all 3 months) and inorganic phosphorus levels (months 1 and 3), indicating a general anabolic response. Prealbumin and transferrin levels were significantly increased in DAA but not in DD patients at month 1, but the groups did not differ at months 2 and 3. In patients with baseline albumin levels less than 3.5 g/dL (bromcresol green [BCG] method), DAA patients showed increases in albumin, transferrin (months 1 and 2), and prealbumin levels (all 3 months) relative to baseline values, whereas these serum protein levels were unchanged in DD patients, although the changes from baseline did not differ between groups. In this subgroup, midarm muscle circumference (MAMC) did not change in DD or DAA patients. In patients with baseline albumin levels of 3.5 g/dL or greater, DD patients had decreases in albumin and total protein levels at all 3 months and in prealbumin levels at months 1 and 2, relative to baseline. In DAA patients, there were fewer changes in serum proteins. MAMC increased significantly from baseline in DAA but not in DD patients, although changes from baseline did not differ between DAA and DD groups. DAA patients showed no changes in peritoneal membrane transport characteristics. The results indicate that treatment with one or two exchanges daily of this amino acid-based PD solution is safe and provides nutritional benefit for malnourished PD patients.

Abstract
A total of 40 patients with drug-refractory, life-threatening cardiac rhythm disturbances--ventricular tachycardia in 23 patients and ventricular fibrillation in 17 patients--underwent extended endocardial resection (EER) of scar tissue. Scarring was due to myocardial infarction in 38 patients, to previous congenital heart operation in 1 patient, and to sarcoidosis of the heart in 1. The EER procedure was directed by epicardial and endocardial mapping data whenever possible, and was usually combined with revascularization, aneurysmectomy, or, in 5 patients, mitral valve replacement. Operative mortality was 10%, incident to poor preoperative ventricular function and hemorrhage secondary to previous cardiac surgical procedures. Thirty-three of the 36 survivors (92%) are free of arrhythmia at follow-up periods ranging from 3 to 36 months (mean, 12.5 months); the arrhythmia in the remaining 3 patients is now drug controlled. Thirty-three patients had postoperative electrophysiological studies, and in 30 (91%), the arrhythmia was no longer inducible. The results of surgical treatment for ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation were similar. The results also proved satisfactory whether the EER procedure was directed by visual observation or mapping.

Abstract
Release of taurine in response to cell swelling induced by hyposmolarity was observed in cultured astrocytes. Efflux of 3H-taurine increased by 30% and 70% upon reductions in osmolarity of only 5% and 10%. Reductions in osmolarity of 20%, 30%, and 50% stimulated basal taurine release by 300%, 500%, and 1,500%, respectively. The properties of this volume-sensitive release of taurine were examined to investigate: 1) its association with K+ and Cl- fluxes, currently activated during volume regulation: 2) its relationship with Ca2(+)-dependent reactions; and 3) the mechanism of the taurine efflux process. Taurine release was unaffected by removal of Na+, Ca2+, or Cl-, by pimozide and trifluoperazine, or by agents disrupting the cytoskeleton. The K+ channel inhibitors barium, quinidine, tetraethylammonium, and gadolinium had no effect. Taurine release was reduced by furosemide, a blocker of K+/Cl- cotransport, but not by the more specific inhibitor, bumetanide. It was markedly reduced by the inhibitors of Cl- channels DIDS, SITS, and anthracene-9-carboxylate. Taurine efflux was pH-dependent, being reduced at low pH values. It was decreased at 4 degrees C but not at 14 degrees C or 20 degrees C. These results suggest that the volume-sensitive release of taurine is independent of K+ fluxes but may be associated with Cl- conductances. It also seems unrelated to Ca2(+)-dependent transduction mechanisms. The Na(+)-dependent taurine carrier apparently is not involved in the swelling-induced release process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive fruit juice intake (>12 ounces/day) has been reported to be associated with short stature and obesity in preschool children. OBJECTIVE To confirm whether excess fruit juice intake was associated with short stature and obesity in preschool children, we assessed growth parameters and fruit juice intake in 105 white children, ages 24 to 36 months. METHODOLOGY Mothers were interviewed twice by a registered dietitian when children were age 24, 28, or 32 months (interview 1) and when children were age 28, 32, or 36 months (interview 2); interviews were assigned randomly. At each interview mothers provided 3 days of dietary data (one 24-hour recall and a 2-day food record) and the registered dietitian weighed the child and measured his/her height. Dietary data were analyzed using Nutritionist IV software. Each child's body mass index (wt/ht2) and ponderal index (wt/ht3) were calculated for each interview. Growth parameters of children consuming <12 ounces/day 100% fruit juice were compared with those consuming >/=12 ounces/day using the Student's t test, chi2, Fisher's exact test, and mixed model repeated measures analyses (PROC MIXED). RESULTS Results consistently indicated no statistically significant differences in children's height, body mass index, or ponderal index related to fruit juice intake. Intakes of soda pop were negatively related to intakes of milk and fruit juice although intakes of milk and fruit juice were not related. CONCLUSIONS The consistent lack of relationship between children's fruit juice intake and growth parameters in our study does not support previous recommendations to limit the intake of 100% fruit juice to <12 ounces/day.

Abstract
Cerebellar granule cells are believed to be glutamatergic, but, as they receive excitatory amino acidergic input from mossy fibers, they also possess N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. The possible involvement of these NMDA receptors in the biochemical differentiation of cultured granule neurons was studied in terms of the specific activity of phosphate-activated glutaminase, an enzyme important in the synthesis of the putative neurotransmitter pool of glutamate. When the partially depolarized cells were treated with NMDA for the last 3 days (i.e. between 2 and 5 days in vitro), it elevated specific activity of glutaminase in the dose- and time-dependent manners. The half-maximal effect was obtained at about 10 microM NMDA, whereas the maximum concentration, which produced about a 2.7-fold increase in 5-day-old cultures, was about 50 microM NMDA. This increase in glutaminase was completely blocked by the NMDA receptor antagonist, 2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid, and by the NMDA receptor-linked Ca2+ ion channel blockers, MK 801 and Mg2+. The effect of NMDA was not related to the survival of the granule cells, as the experiments were carried out before the dependence on high K+ for the survival of granule cells develops in culture, and during the period of investigation none of the compounds used compromised the survival of these cells. The enhancement of glutaminase activity was due to an induction in enzyme protein, since it was completely blocked by cycloheximide and actinomycin D. In contrast to granule neurons, the treatment with NMDA had no significant effect on the activity of glutaminase and glutamine synthetase in cultured cerebellar astroglial cells. Our present results on glutaminase enzyme would indicate that an increase in the cellular concentration of free Ca2+ mediated through the NMDA induced increase in Ca2+ conductance, leads to long term changes in differentiating cerebellar granule neurons, and it is possible that this kind of physiological stimulation of granule cells is normally provided in vivo by the presynaptic glutamatergic mossy fibers.

Abstract
Research and development has been aimed towards the development of toothpastes for oral hygiene and gingival health benefits. The most effective antiplaque agent to date, chlorhexidine, is difficult to formulate into active toothpaste products. Despite some encouraging findings for experimental chlorhexidine toothpastes, there are to date no commercially available products. Based on positive findings from an experimental gingivitis study, this investigation evaluated 2 chlorhexidine toothpastes, one with fluoride, as adjuncts to oral hygiene. The study was a double-blind controlled, parallel, balanced group design, extending over 6 months. A total of 297 volunteers commenced the study after screening for a minimum acceptance level of gingivitis. At baseline, 6, 12 and 24 weeks, stain, gingival, bleeding and plaque indices were recorded, together with a calculus index at 6, 12 and 24 weeks. After a baseline prophylaxis, volunteers used the allocated product 2 x per day, with no other oral hygiene instructions given. Plaque, gingival and bleeding scores improved in all 3 groups, but to an overall significantly greater extent in the active groups. However, staining and calculus indices were significantly increased in the active compared to the control group. If the local side-effects of chlorhexidine are considered to be acceptable, these chlorhexidine toothpastes could be recommended for the same clinical applications as other chlorhexidine products. The apparent compatibility of fluoride with chlorhexidine in the one product may be pertinent to caries prevention.

Abstract
The BN/KL region in the Orion molecular cloud is an archetype for the study of the formation of stars much more massive than the Sun. This region contains luminous young stars and protostars but, like most star-forming regions, is difficult to study in detail because of the obscuring effects of dust and gas. Our basic expectations are shaped to some extent by the present theoretical picture of star formation, the cornerstone of which is that protostars accrete gas from rotating equatorial disks and shed angular momentum by ejecting gas in bipolar outflows. The main source of the outflow in the BN/KL region may be an object known as radio source I, which is commonly believed to be surrounded by a rotating disk of molecular material. Here we report high-resolution observations of silicon monoxide (SiO) and water maser emission from the gas surrounding source I. We show that within 60 AU of the source (about the size of the Solar System), the region is dominated by a conical bipolar outflow, rather than the expected disk. A slower outflow, close to the equatorial plane of the protostellar system, extends to radii of 1,000 AU.

Abstract
Caspase-3 enzyme activity is induced, and cell death follows, when cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs) from 8-day-old rats are transferred from an extracellular concentration of 25 mM K+ (25 mM [K+]e) to 5 mM [K+]e. Death of these neurons is diminished by an inhibitor of caspase-3 but not by an inhibitor of caspase-1. Actinomycin D and cycloheximide inhibit induction of caspase-3 and prevent death. Experiments in which CGN intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was manipulated by either changing [K+]e or adding a voltage-gated Ca2+ channel antagonist or a Ca2+ ionophore to the medium showed that caspase-3 mRNA rises 2.5-fold when [Ca2+]i is diminished from 300 to 150 nM, with a corresponding rise in peak caspase enzyme activity. Whereas the caspase-3 mRNA level does not rise further with a still greater diminution in [Ca2+]i, peak caspase enzyme activity continues to increase, reaching sevenfold induction when [Ca2+]i is reduced to 55 nM. In CGNs in which [Ca2+]i is set at 55 nM by incubation in 5 mM [K+]e, treatment with forskolin or dibutyryl 3',5'-cyclic adenosine-5'-monophosphate delays caspase-3 induction and diminishes death but does not alter [Ca2+]i. We conclude that, in immature CGNs, both caspase-3 transcription and the subsequent processing of caspase-3 are induced by a fall in [Ca2+]i. Elevating cyclic AMP content delays caspase-3 induction by a mechanism that does not require an increase in [Ca2+]i.
