Measurements of Nonsinglet Moments of the Nucleon Structure Functions and Comparison to Predictions from Lattice QCD for Q^{2}=4 GeV^{2}

We present extractions of the nucleon nonsinglet moments utilizing new precision data on the deuteron F_{2} structure function at large Bjorken-x determined via the Rosenbluth separation technique at Jefferson Lab Experimental Hall C. These new data are combined with a complementary set of data on the proton previously measured in Hall C at similar kinematics and world datasets on the proton and deuteron at lower x measured at SLAC and CERN. The new Jefferson Lab data provide coverage of the upper third of the x range, crucial for precision determination of the higher moments. In contrast to previous extractions, these moments have been corrected for nuclear effects in the deuteron using a new global fit to the deuteron and proton data. The obtained experimental moments represent an order of magnitude improvement in precision over previous extractions using high x data. Moreover, recent exciting developments in lattice QCD calculations provide a first ever comparison of these new experimental results with calculations of moments carried out at the physical pion mass, as well as a new approach that first calculates the quark distributions directly before determining moments.

Epidemiologia dos acidentes no surfe no Brasil

Apesar do grande número de praticantes do surfe no Brasil, nenhum trabalho científico nacional foi dedicado à caracterização e análise epidemiológica das lesões esportivas desse grupo. Pretendeu-se com este estudo identificar os tipos e lesões mais freqüentes relacionadas à prática do surfe recreacional e competitivo no Brasil. Estudaram-se suas causas, a parte do corpo atingida, sua gravidade, relacionadas às diferentes condições de surfe. Foram distribuídos 21.300 questionários pelos Estados litorâneos do Nordeste, Sudeste e Sul do Brasil. Um banco de dados foi montado com respostas de 930 praticantes, que relataram 927 lesões que necessitaram atenção médica ou que impediram a prática do surfe por um ou mais dias (num período de três anos). A população incluiu 67,5% surfistas recreacionais, 29,4% amadores e 3,1% profissionais, a maior parte do sexo masculino (95,3%); 56,6% praticam o esporte há mais de cinco anos. A média de idade foi de 23,7 anos (DP = 6,30). A maioria das lesões foi de natureza traumática (82,5%) e ocorreu durante a prática do surfe recreacional (96,2%). As lesões mais comuns foram as lacerações (44%), as contusões (16,9%) e as lesões musculoligamentares (15,5%); 38% das lesões atingiram os membros inferiores, 17,9% os membros superiores e 15,6% a cabeça. O tempo de afastamento da prática do surfe devido à lesão foi: 54,2% até 7 dias, 20,7% entre 7 e 14 dias, 10,1% entre 14 e 30 dias e 14,8% mais de 30 dias. Nesta amostra, a incidência de lesões foi de 2,47 para cada mil dias de surfe. Esta incidência foi inferior à obtida em outros estudos. Apesar da alta incidência de lesões traumáticas neste estudo, a alta prevalência de dores lombares recorrentes (28,4%), dores no pescoço (27,3%), dores nos ombros (20,5%) e dores nos joelhos (12,5%) sugere que as lesões de esforço repetido sejam um problema comum entre os surfistas.

Anatomic consideration for sacral screw placement

Instrumentation of the lumbosacral spine increasingly involves screw fixation to the sacrum. Recommended locations and techniques for screw placement vary, particularly when bicortical purchase of the sacrum is performed. The purpose of this study was to describe the critical anatomy and potential injuries to neurovascular and visceral structures anterior to the sacrum. Lack of awareness can lead to life-threatening complications. The study included 22 fresh human cadavers with no prior spinal surgery. Specimens were placed in a prone position, and the lumbosacral spine was exposed. Two 6.5-mm screws were inserted using one of two techniques, respectively: Starting just inferior to the S1 facet one screw was angled 25 degrees caudally and 30 degrees laterally; in the second technique, lateral inclination was increased to 45 degrees. In addition, all specimens had screws placed in the S2 pedicles. An anterior dissection was performed to allow evaluation of the neurovascular and visceral structures at risk for injury by, or adjacent to, the screw tips. All significant neurovascular structures in the area of concern were constant in position. The internal iliac vein and the lumbosacral nerve trunk were most at risk for injury by the 30 and 45 degrees laterally directed screws. The sigmoid colon, though close to the S2 screw, was protected by its mesentery. Screws placed in the S1 pedicle were least likely to injure the neurovascular bundle. A lateral and a midline safe zone were identified.

[Detection of viruses in water of the Baltic Sea (author's transl)]

Virological examination of water of the Baltic Sea in the neighbourhood of a sewage outfall was done. By means of an apparatus for concentrating viruses in water, it was possible to detect enteroviruses in four of eleven samples, and in general in those moments, when conditions were fulfilled by a certain windway. The amount of viruses varied from 5 to 126 pfu in 10 liters, the ratio of virus to E. coli titer from 1:11 111 to 1:100 000. Factors influencing the decrease of virus titer in seawater were briefly discussed.
