Abstract
The behavior of intact rats and rats with chronic gastric fistulas was observed and scored during a 60-min test period when they were offered liquid diet after 17 hr of food deprivation. Intact rats and rats with closed fistulas displayed a specific behavioral sequence at the end of each meal: They stopped eating, engaged in grooming and exploration for a short time, and then rested or slept. Thus, a fixed behavioral sequence characterizes satiety in the rat. Although the behavioral sequence of satiety was fixed, the cessation of feeding was not a sufficient condition for the appearance of the rest of the sequence: Quinine adulteration of the liquid diet stopped sham feeding but did not elicit the complete sequence. Intraperitoneal injection of the intestinal hormone cholecystokinin during sham feeding, however, elicited the complete sequence of satiety. The observation that cholecystokinin not only stops feeding but elicits the complete sequence of satiety supports our hypothesis that endogenous cholecystokinin is a satiety signal for the rat.

Abstract
Compelling evidence has accumulated over the last several years from our laboratory, as well as others, indicating that central hyperactive states resulting from neuronal plastic changes within the spinal cord play a critical role in hyperalgesia associated with nerve injury and inflammation. In our laboratory, chronic constriction injury of the common sciatic nerve, a rat model of neuropathic pain, has been shown to result in activation of central nervous system excitatory amino acid receptors and subsequent intracellular cascades including protein kinase C translocation and activation, nitric oxide production, and nitric oxide-activated poly(ADP ribose) synthetase activation. Similar cellular mechanisms also have been implicated in the development of tolerance to the analgesic effects of morphine. A recently observed phenomenon, the development of "dark neurons," is associated with both chronic constriction injury and morphine tolerance. A site of action involved in both hyperalgesia and morphine tolerance is in the superficial laminae of the spinal cord dorsal horn. These observations suggest that hyperalgesia and morphine tolerance may be interrelated at the level of the superficial laminae of the dorsal horn by common neural substrates that interact at the level of excitatory amino acid receptor activation and subsequent intracellular events. The demonstration of interrelationships between neural mechanisms underlying hyperalgesia and morphine tolerance may lead to a better understanding of the neurobiology of these two phenomena in particular and pain in general. This knowledge may also provide a scientific basis for improved pain management with opiate analgesics.

Abstract
Reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have emerged during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This epidemiological and cohort study sought to investigate any causative association between COVID-19 infection and GBS. The epidemiology of GBS cases reported to the UK National Immunoglobulin Database was studied from 2016 to 2019 and compared to cases reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were stratified by hospital trust and region, with numbers of reported cases per month. UK population data for COVID-19 infection were collated from UK public health bodies. In parallel, but separately, members of the British Peripheral Nerve Society prospectively reported incident cases of GBS during the pandemic at their hospitals to a central register. The clinical features, investigation findings and outcomes of COVID-19 (definite or probable) and non-COVID-19 associated GBS cases in his cohort were compared. The incidence of GBS treated in UK hospitals from 2016 to 2019 was 1.65–1.88 per 100 000 individuals per year. In 2020, GBS and COVID-19 incidences varied between regions and did not correlate with one another (r = 0.06, 95% confidence interval: −0.56 to 0.63, P = 0.86). GBS incidence fell between March and May 2020 compared to the same months of 2016–19. In an independent cohort study, 47 GBS cases were reported (COVID-19 status: 13 definite, 12 probable, 22 non-COVID-19). There were no significant differences in the pattern of weakness, time to nadir, neurophysiology, CSF findings or outcome between these groups. Intubation was more frequent in the COVID-19 affected cohort (7/13, 54% versus 5/22, 23% in COVID-19-negative) likely related to COVID-19 pulmonary involvement. Although it is not possible to entirely rule out the possibility of a link this study finds no epidemiological or phenotypic clues of SARS-CoV-2 being causative of GBS. GBS incidence has fallen during the pandemic, which may be the influence of lockdown measures reducing transmission of GBS inducing pathogens such as Campylobacter jejuni and respiratory viruses.

Abstract
Mesenteric and retroperitoneal cysts are rare intra-abdominal tumors. Ten new patients are presented as well as 152 other cases reported in the English literature. These 162 cases were then analyzed for significant trends. Patients under 10 years of age were significantly different from the older group with respect to a shorter duration of symptoms, a higher number of patients requiring an emergency operation, a lower number of recurrences and the location of the cyst. Patients with retroperitoneal cysts were more likely to have incomplete excision of the cyst and therefore had a higher incidence of recurrence. They also required marsupialization more often. Retroperitoneal cysts should be considered a different entity from mesenteric cysts even though they present clinically in a similar fashion. The outcome of surgical treatment is less satisfactory in patients with retroperitoneal cysts.

Abstract
Titin is the largest polypeptide yet described (relative molecular mass approximately 3 x 10(6); refs 1, 2) and an abundant protein of striated muscle. Its molecules are string-like and in vivo span from the M to Z-lines. I-band regions of titin are thought to make elastic connections between the thick filament and the Z-line, thereby forming a third type of sarcomere filament. These would centre the A-band in the sarcomere and provide structural continuity in relaxed myofibrils. The A-band region of titin seems to be bound to the thick filament, where it has been proposed to act as a 'molecular ruler' regulating filament length and assembly. Here, we show that partial titin complementary DNAs encode a regular pattern of two types of 100-residue motif, each of which probably folds into a separate domain type. Such motifs are present in several evolutionarily divergent muscle proteins, all of which are likely to interact with myosin. One or both of the domain types is therefore likely to bind to myosin.

Abstract
Treatment with heparin or streptokinase was allocated randomly to 30 patients with life-threatening pulmonary embolism verified by angiography. Treatment was given for 72 hours and pulmonary angiography was repeated. There was significantly greater (P < 0.001) evidence of thrombolysis in those patients treated with streptokinase compared with those treated with heparin. The reduction of systolic and mean pulmonary arterial pressures was also significantly greater (P < 0.05 and P < 0.02 respectively) in the streptokinase group.Seven patients failed to complete 72 hours of the trial treatment: five successfully underwent pulmonary embolectomy. Six of these "failures" had initial pulmonary angiographic scores of 24 or more and systemic systolic blood pressure recordings of 100 mm Hg or less. Patients with these features should probably be considered for pulmonary embolectomy as the initial treatment.A febrile reaction commonly occurred in the streptokinase group; otherwise side effects were no more common than in the heparin group.

Abstract
1. Horizontal gratings flashed for 20 ms were used to compare visual contrast sensitivity during horizontal saccades with sensitivity during normal vision, at three luminance levels, 4 X 10(2), 4 X 10(-2), and 4 X 10(-4) cd/m2. 2. Greatest sensitivity loss during saccades was found at low spatial frequencies. There is little or no loss at high spatial frequencies. 3. As luminance level is decreased there is a decrease in the spatial frequency below which saccadic sensitivity loss occurs. This shift in spatial frequency with luminance level, considered in conjunction with measurements of stationary and drifting gratings, indicates the functional involvement of movement sensitive mechanisms in saccadic sensitivity loss. 4. At the two lower luminance levels (4 X 10(-2) and 4 X 10(-4) cd/m2) sensitivity during saccades is greater than normal at high spatial frequencies. This enhancement of sensitivity was confirmed by forced choice measurements. 5. It was also shown that sensitivity to abrupt changes in the trajectory of moving gratings is lowered during saccades. 6. It is concluded that mechanisms sensitive to movement and transients are damped during saccades, so preventing perception of image motion during saccades and thereby preserving visual stability.

Abstract
Complex human traits are influenced by variation in regulatory DNA through mechanisms that are not fully understood. Since regulatory elements are conserved between humans and mice, a thorough annotation of cis regulatory variants in mice could aid in this process. Here we provide a detailed portrait of mouse gene expression across multiple tissues in a three-way diallel. Greater than 80% of mouse genes have cis regulatory variation. These effects influence complex traits and usually extend to the human ortholog. Further, we estimate that at least one in every thousand SNPs creates a cis regulatory effect. We also observe two types of parent-of-origin effects, including classical imprinting and a novel, global allelic imbalance in favor of the paternal allele. We conclude that, as with humans, pervasive regulatory variation influences complex genetic traits in mice and provide a new resource toward understanding the genetic control of transcription in mammals.

Abstract
The administration of verapamil to patients receiving beta-adrenergic blocking drugs is reported to produce adverse circulatory reactions, but a systematic investigation of this potential drug interaction has not been performed in man. We administered 40-, 80- and 120-mg doses of verapamil orally to 15 patients with angina pectoris who were receiving high doses of propranolol or metoprolol. Verapamil produced dose-dependent decreases in cardiac performance: with 120 mg, cardiac index decreased by 0.38 l/min/m2, stroke volume index decreased by 2.8 ml/beat/m2 and heart rate decreased by 6 beats/min, associated with increases in pulmonary capillary wedge (2.2 mm Hg) and mean right atrial pressures (1.7 mm Hg) (all p less than 0.01); two patients had marked, but asymptomatic, hypotensive reactions. In contrast, repeat administration of 120-mg doses of verapamil 24--30 hours after withdrawal of beta blockade produced no significant cardiodepressant effects despite significantly higher plasma levels of verapamil than during propranolol therapy (383.1 vs 205.1 ng/ml, p less than 0.01). In conclusion, verapamil produces significant negative inotropic and chronotropic effects in patients treated with beta-adrenergic antagonists; combination therapy should therefore be used with caution in patients with angina pectoris.

Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis was recovered from the cervices of 4% (36/900) of pregnant women tested. 20 infants born through chlamydia-infected cervices were followed up for a year, as were 18 infants born to chlamydia-negative mothers. A statistically significant excess of conjunctivitis and pneumonia was found in infants exposed to chlamydia. The attack-rate for inclusion conjunctivitis was 35% (7/20) and for chlamydial pneumonia it was 20% (4/20). Chlamydiae were recovered from 10 of the 20 (50%) exposed infants, and seroconversion was demonstrated in 14 (70%). None of the 18 unexposed infants showed evidence of chlamydial infection. Thus in our clinic 2.8% of all newborns acquired chlamydial infection, with incidence-rates of 14 cases of conjunctivitis and 8 cases of pneumonia per 1000 live births. Neonatal chlamydial infection is thus a major public-health problem warranting a preventive programme based on the fuller provision of diagnostic services and the treatment of infected pregnant women.

Abstract
As human service systems attempt to integrate persons with disabilities, particularly those with challenging behaviors, into the mainstream of society, use of positive behavioral supports must be implemented. Training of persons in the formal and informal support systems must also be reconceptualized in the context of using positive behavioral supports. This paper addresses some current issues related to the use of such supports and training in the delivery of human services.

Abstract
Coronary arteriography and biplane ventriculography were performed in 51 patients during the acute (mean of 6.6 hours after onset of symptoms) and chronic (1 to 3 months after admission) phase of myocardial infarction. Twenty-four patients were treated in a conventional manner. In 27 patients, reperfusion was achieved with intracoronary streptokinase after 24 +/- 20 minutes of infusion. Peak creatine kinase and cumulative creatine kinase release were derived from serial creatine kinase measurements. Ejection fraction and the length of the akinetic or dyskinetic segments were calculated in the chronic phase. The time interval between onset of symptoms and peak creatine kinase was significantly shorter for the streptokinase-treated patients as compared with the conventionally treated patients (13.5 +/- 5.3 versus 22.9 +/- 7.4 hours, p = 0.0001). Significant linear correlations were obtained for both streptokinase-treated and control patients, relating: 1) peak creatine kinase value to both length of the noncontracting segment and ejection fraction in the chronic phase, and 2) cumulative creatine kinase release to both length of the noncontracting segment and ejection fraction in the chronic phase. Patients treated with streptokinase experienced a relatively greater release of enzyme for a given infarct size as compared with those treated in a conventional manner. The difference in enzyme release between the two groups increased as infarct size increased. These observations may be explained by enhanced washout of enzyme from the infarct zone, secondary to reperfusion after intracoronary streptokinase therapy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
AIMS Average daily alcohol consumption is usually calculated based on self-reports of the quantity (number of drinks consumed per drinking-day) and frequency (number of drinking-days) of alcohol consumption within a given time period. However, this method may underestimate average daily alcohol consumption (and in turn, the prevalence of heavy drinking), because studies demonstrate that respondents do not typically include binge drinking occasions in estimates of their 'usual' or 'average' daily alcohol consumption. DESIGN We used the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), an annual random-digit telephone survey of US adults aged 18 years or older, to estimate average daily alcohol consumption using standard quantity-frequency questions, and then recalculated this measure by including self-reports of binge drinking. The proportion of respondents who met a standard, sex-specific definition of heavy drinking based on average daily alcohol consumption was then assessed nationally and for each state. FINDINGS Compared to standard quantity-frequency methods, including binge drinks in calculations of average daily alcohol consumption increased the relative prevalence of heavy drinking among all adults by 19% to 42% (depending on the method used to estimate the number of drinks per binge). Among binge drinkers, the overall prevalence of heavy drinking increased 53% relative to standard quantity-frequency methods. As a result, half of women binge drinkers and half of binge drinkers aged 55 or older met criteria for heavy drinking. CONCLUSIONS Including binge drinks (especially the application of age- and sex-specific estimates of binge drinks) in the calculation of average daily alcohol consumption can improve the accuracy of prevalence estimates for heavy drinking among US adults, and should be considered to increase the usefulness of this measure for alcohol surveillance.

Abstract
The interaction of titin with myosin has been studied by binding assays and electron microscopy. Electron micrographs of the titin-myosin complex suggest a binding site near the tip of the tail of the myosin molecule. The distance from the myosin head-tail junction to titin indicates binding 20-30 nm from the myosin COOH terminus. Consistent with this, micrographs of titin-light meromyosin (LMM) show binding near the end of the LMM molecule. Plots of myosin- and LMM-attachment positions along the titin molecule show binding predominantly in the region located in the A band in situ, which is consistent with the proposal that titin regulates thick filament assembly. Estimates of the apparent dissociation constant of the titin-LMM complex were approximately 20 nM. Assays of LMM cyanogen bromide fragments also suggested a strong binding site near the COOH terminus. Proteolysis of a COOH-terminal 17.6-kD CNBr fragment isolated from whole myosin resulted in eight peptides of which only one, comprising 17 residues, bound strongly to titin. Two isoforms of this peptide were detected by protein sequencing. Similar binding data were obtained using synthetic versions of both isoforms. The peptide is located immediately COOH-terminal of the fourth "skip" residue in the myosin tail, which is consistent with the electron microscopy. Skip-4 may have a role in determining thick filament structure, by allowing abrupt bending of the myosin tail close to the titin-binding site.

Abstract
The epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of 412 patients infected with Shigella from a systematic sample of approximately 100,000 patients attending Dacca Hospital, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, between December 1, 1979, and November 30, 1980, were reviewed. Shigella was isolated from 11.6% of the 3,550 patients in the sample and was the second most common isolate in patients over two years old. Two clinical presentations of shigellosis were found: (I) watery diarrhea occurring in younger children and associated with a shorter duration of illness and with more vomiting and dehydration and (2) dysentery with stool blood and abdominal pain. These different presentations may reflect two mechanisms in the pathogenesis of shigellosis or different stages of the disease. The most useful signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of shigellosis were stool with blood and abdominal pain in all patients and the absence of watery diarrhea and vomiting in patients over one year old. Simple visual inspection of stool for blood correctly identified 44% of all patients infected with Shigella.

Abstract
The Human Silencing Hub (HUSH) complex is necessary for epigenetic repression of LINE-1 elements. We show that HUSH-depletion in human cell lines and primary fibroblasts leads to induction of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) through JAK/STAT signaling. This effect is mainly attributed to MDA5 and RIG-I sensing of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs). This coincides with upregulation of primate-conserved LINE-1s, as well as increased expression of full-length hominid-specific LINE-1s that produce bidirectional RNAs, which may form dsRNA. Notably, LTRs nearby ISGs are derepressed likely rendering these genes more responsive to interferon. LINE-1 shRNAs can abrogate the HUSH-dependent response, while overexpression of an engineered LINE-1 construct activates interferon signaling. Finally, we show that the HUSH component, MPP8 is frequently downregulated in diverse cancers and that its depletion leads to DNA damage. These results suggest that LINE-1s may drive physiological or autoinflammatory responses through dsRNA sensing and gene-regulatory roles and are controlled by the HUSH complex.

Abstract
The acute changes in coronary blood flow and coronary resistance that occur in response to cigarette smoking have not been accurately determined. To define the factors that affect this response, coronary sinus blood flow was measured in 16 patients (group I) with coronary artery disease and in 6 patients (group II) without angiographically detectable coronary disease. Seven patients (group IA) had severe (greater than or equal to 75%) proximal left coronary lesions and nine patients (group IB) had significant distal lesions with 50% or less proximal stenoses. Group I had a smaller overall increase (increases 1.6 +/- 5.3%) in coronary sinus blood flow than did group II (increases 7.7 +/- 6.1%) (p less than 0.05). Coronary resistance increased overall (increases 2.7 +/- 5.3%) in group I but decreased (decreases 2.4 +/- 3.4%) in group II (p less than 0.05). Patients in group IA had a highly significant increase in coronary resistance as compared with group IB (increases 7.0 +/- 4.2% versus decreases 0.9 +/- 2.6%) (p less than 0.001). Coronary sinus flow tended to decrease (decreases 1.2 +/- 4.6%) in group IA but to increase (increases 3.8 +/- 5.1%) in group IB (p = 0.06). It is concluded that smoking increases coronary resistance in patients with coronary artery disease. A greater impact is observed in patients with a severe proximal stenosis than in those with a distal stenosis. It is proposed that smoking increases coronary artery tone at the site of the stenosis, limiting the coronary flow response proportionally to the size of the affected vascular bed.

Abstract
AIMS A series of patients with myeloma were investigated to assess whether immunological risk factors predisposing to serious infection could be identified. METHODS Patients (n = 102) with predominantly plateau phase myeloma were monitored prospectively for infections. Immunological parameters including total non-paraprotein immunoglobulins and specific antibody titres were measured in all patients and compared with a control population of healthy individuals of a similar age; response to immunisation with Pneumovax II, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids and IgG subclasses were measured in a subgroup of 41 patients. Other characteristics investigated for any association with infection included age, sex, paraprotein type, disease stage, and chemotherapy. RESULTS Specific antibody titres to pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides and tetanus and diphtheria toxoids were significantly reduced compared with the control population. Low antipneumococcal and anti Escherichia coli titres correlated with risk of serious infection and low anti-pneumococcal titres with severity of non-paraprotein immunosuppression. In 41 immunised patients responses to Pneumovax II, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids were poor; IgG subclass levels were significantly reduced and a poor IgG response to Pneumovax II immunisation was associated with an increased risk of septicaemia and low IgG2 levels. The overall serious infection rate was 0.92 infections per patient year and was four times higher during periods of active disease (1.90) compared with plateau phase myeloma (0.49). The predominant site of infection was the respiratory tract. Clinical and laboratory parameters showed only male sex and reduced non-paraprotein IgG and IgA levels to be significantly associated with at least one serious infection. CONCLUSIONS A subgroup of patients with myeloma with poor IgG responses to exogenous antigens, who are at increased risk of serious infection, can be identified and may benefit from replacement immunoglobulin therapy to reduce the risk of infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long read sequencing is changing the landscape of genomic research, especially de novo assembly. Despite the high error rate inherent to long read technologies, increased read lengths dramatically improve the continuity and accuracy of genome assemblies. However, the cost and throughput of these technologies limits their application to complex genomes. One solution is to decrease the cost and time to assemble novel genomes by leveraging "hybrid" assemblies that use long reads for scaffolding and short reads for accuracy. RESULTS We describe a novel method leveraging a multi-string Burrows-Wheeler Transform with auxiliary FM-index to correct errors in long read sequences using a set of complementary short reads. We demonstrate that our method efficiently produces significantly more high quality corrected sequence than existing hybrid error-correction methods. We also show that our method produces more contiguous assemblies, in many cases, than existing state-of-the-art hybrid and long-read only de novo assembly methods. CONCLUSION Our method accurately corrects long read sequence data using complementary short reads. We demonstrate higher total throughput of corrected long reads and a corresponding increase in contiguity of the resulting de novo assemblies. Improved throughput and computational efficiency than existing methods will help better economically utilize emerging long read sequencing technologies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical care on selected clinical and economic outcomes in patients with hypertension or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in ambulatory care settings. DESIGN Clinic patients with hypertension or COPD were randomly assigned to a treatment group (pharmaceutical care) or a control group (traditional pharmacy care) over a six-month period. Clinical pharmacists and pharmacy residents conducted the protocols. There were 133 evaluable patients (63 treatment and 70 control) in the hypertension study arm and 98 evaluable patients (43 treatment and 55 control) in the COPD study arm. SETTING 10 Departments of Veterans Affairs medical centers and 1 academic medical center. INTERVENTIONS Patient-centered pharmaceutical care model (employing standardized care) implemented by clinical pharmacy residents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Patient knowledge, medication compliance, and health resource use. RESULTS The hypertension treatment group had a significantly greater reduction in systolic blood pressure from visit 1 to visit 5 than did the control group. In the COPD study arm, trends were positive in the treatment group for patients ratings of symptom interference with activities and dyspnea measures. There was a significant difference between the hypertension treatment and control group for compliance. There were no significant changes in compliance scores in the COPD study arm. Mean number of hospitalizations and other health care provider visits was higher for the hypertension control group. For patients with COPD, hospitalizations increased in the control group, and the number of other health care provider visits was higher in the control group. CONCLUSION Pharmacists' participation in a pharmaceutical care program resulted in disease state improvement in ambulatory patients with hypertension and COPD.

Abstract
Symptoms of hereditary angioedema may present during the child's first years. Attacks may be a particular threat to the narrower airway of the child. An early diagnosis is most valuable because effective C1 inhibitor (C1 INH) concentrate is available. We present a reference area for the antigenic and functional determination of C1 INH by using uncontaminated umbilical cord blood from 80 normal newborns collected by puncturing vessels in the newly delivered placenta. We examined two full-term babies (1 and 2) from mothers with hereditary angioedema type I the same way. The concentration of C1 INH antigen was determined by radial immunodiffusion. The C1 INH functional assay was based on the addition of a known quantity of C1s, which enzymatically splits a chromogenic substrate. The test was performed in the presence of methylamine and heparin in a kinetic microtiter plate assay. Citrated plasma was used in both assays. The data obtained in the 80 cord blood samples (2.5-97.5 percentile) were 0.11-0.22 g/L for C1 INH antigen (adults, 0.15-0.33 g/L) and 47.2-85.9% for C1 INH function (percentage of adults). In cord blood, baby 1 had an antigenic value of 0.12 g/L (7.5 percentile) and C1 INH function of 61.8% (42 percentile). The corresponding values for baby 2 in cord blood were less than 0.05 g/L (0.106 g/L < 2.5 percentile) and 34.3% (12.9% < 2.5 percentile). Baby 2 had markedly lower C4 values yet much higher C4 activation products than baby 1. At 4 mo, baby 1 had an antigenic C1 INH value of 0.24 g/L.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The RGD-containing peptides isolated from the venoms of the Viperidae constitute a new class of small cysteine-rich peptides of variable amino acid composition and biological activity (Huang, T.-F., et al. (1987) J. Biol. Chem. 262, 16157-16163; Gan, Z.R., et al. (1988) J. Biol. Chem 263, 19827-19832; Huang, T.-F., et al. (1989) Biochemistry 28, 661-668), which it is proposed by Gould et al. (unpublished data) that we call 'disintegrins'. These peptides bind to the glycoprotein IIb-IIIa receptor on the platelet surface and inhibit aggregation induced by ADP, thrombin, platelet-activating factor and collagen. These peptides are also potent inhibitors of cell adhesion to fibrinogen (Knudsen, K.M., et al. (1988) Exp. Cell Res. 179, 42-49). We report the isolation of two further RGD-peptides from the venoms of Trimeserusus elegans and Trimeserusus albolabris, purified to homogeneity with high yield by a novel, rapid reverse-phase HPLC method. The primary structures of these two peptides were determined to be single polypeptide chains of 73 amino acids. Albolabrin differed from trigramin by eight residues whilst elegantin differed by 22 residues. The molecular mass of albolabrin calculated on the basis of amino acid sequence was 7574 Da and the pI similarly calculated was 4.27. The molecular mass of elegantin was calculated to be 7806 Da and the theoretical pI to be 4.69. RGD is maintained in the same position (51-53 AA) and all 12 cysteines are identical. Our data suggest that the presence of RGD, the conserved secondary and tertiary structure, are essential for the expression of biological activity by these peptides. Both peptides inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Extended homologies around the RGDS sequences in human von Willebrand Factor and bovine fibrinogen were found with both peptides.

Abstract
In a study of infection due to Chlamydia trachomatis in infants, chlamydiae were recovered not only from the conjunctiva and respiratory tract but also from the vagina and rectum. The timing of recovery suggested that the vagina and conjunctivae are exposed to chlamydiae at birth and that pneumonia and gastrointestinal infection occur later. Sampling of the rectum may be a useful procedure for the diagnosis of chlamydial disease in infants.
