Abstract
Abnormal vasculature in the retina, specifically tortuous vessels and capillary degeneration, is common in many of the most prevalent retinal degenerative diseases, currently affecting millions of people across the world. However, the formation and development of abnormal vasculature in the context of retinal degenerative diseases are still poorly understood. The FVB/N (rd1) and rd10 mice are well-studied animal models of retinal degenerative diseases, but how photoreceptor degeneration leads to vascular abnormality in the diseases remains to be elucidated. Here, we used advancements in confocal microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and image analysis software to systematically characterize the pathological vasculature in the FVB/N (rd1) and rd10 mice, known as a chronic, rapid and slower retinal degenerative model, respectively. We demonstrated that there was plexus-specific vascular degeneration in the retinal trilaminar vascular network paralleled to photoreceptor degeneration in the diseased retinas. We also quantitatively analyzed the vascular structural architecture in the wild-type and diseased retinas to provide valuable information on vascular remodeling in retinal degenerative disease.

Abstract
Altruistic behavior is understood to largely stem from adaptations for kin altruism, contingent on degree of relatedness, and/or reciprocal altruism, contingent on degree of benefits conferred in exchange for help. Because kin qualify for both kin and reciprocal altruism, they should receive greater support than friends, as has been demonstrated in prior research. Here, we tested this prediction with regard to willingness to punish on another's behalf, comparing inclinations to aggress against transgressors when the victim was framed as an acquaintance, close friend, cousin, sibling, or oneself. Participants endorsed comparably greater direct aggression on behalf of the self, kin, or friends relative to acquaintances, despite reporting substantially greater emotional closeness to friends, consistent with what has been termed a kinship premium. Kin engendered greater aid than is explicable by affiliative emotion. Participants also reported less anger-yet trends toward greater disgust-when victims were acquaintances relative to all other conditions, replicating prior work distinguishing the social functions of anger and disgust. These results are discussed as they inform both the kinship premium hypothesis and sociofunctional accounts of moral emotion. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) spans approximately one-third of the east coast of Florida and, in recent years, has faced frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs). Blooms of the potentially toxic diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia, occur throughout the lagoon and were reported primarily from the northern IRL. The goal of this study was to identify species of Pseudo-nitzschia and characterize their bloom dynamics in the southern IRL system where monitoring has been less frequent. Surface water samples collected from five locations between October 2018 and May 2020 had Pseudo-nitzschia spp. present in 87% of samples at cell concentrations up to 1.9×103 cells mL-1. Concurrent environmental data showed Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were associated with relatively high salinity waters and cool temperatures. Six species of Pseudo-nitzschia were isolated, cultured, and characterized through 18S Sanger sequencing and scanning electron microscopy. All isolates demonstrated toxicity and domoic acid (DA) was present in 47% of surface water samples. We report the first known occurrence of P. micropora and P. fraudulenta in the IRL, and the first known DA production from P. micropora.

Abstract
Hyaluronan (HA) is a key component of the dense extracellular matrix in breast cancer, and its accumulation is associated with poor prognosis and metastasis. Pegvorhyaluronidase alfa (PEGPH20) enzymatically degrades HA and can enhance drug delivery and treatment response in preclinical tumour models. Clinical development of stromal-targeted therapies would be accelerated by imaging biomarkers that inform on therapeutic efficacy in vivo. Here, PEGPH20 response was assessed by multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in three orthotopic breast tumour models. Treatment of 4T1/HAS3 tumours, the model with the highest HA accumulation, reduced T1 and T2 relaxation times and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and increased the magnetisation transfer ratio, consistent with lower tissue water content and collapse of the extracellular space. The transverse relaxation rate R2 * increased, consistent with greater erythrocyte accessibility following vascular decompression. Treatment of MDA-MB-231 LM2-4 tumours reduced ADC and dramatically increased tumour viscoelasticity measured by MR elastography. Correlation matrix analyses of data from all models identified ADC as having the strongest correlation with HA accumulation, suggesting that ADC is the most sensitive imaging biomarker of tumour response to PEGPH20.

Abstract
Full-spectrum cathodoluminescence (CL) mapping provides a point-by-point spatial measurement of the apparent band gap of a semiconductor thin film. In most studies, analysis of the electrical film properties from CL is presented as color mapping images. We have developed a spectra data analysis algorithm to functionalize, analyze, and generate statistical measurements of the luminescence data to provide additional insights. This algorithm was coded in the R language program, and a set of CdMgSeTe films were studied as an application case study. CL maps were measured for samples with different luminescent responses. A quantitative measure of the heterogeneity of the films was generated by statistical analysis of luminescent intensity and wavelength, spectra type curves, frequency distributions of peak wavelength, and relative intensity maps. The final CL analysis facilitates the investigation of the CdMgSeTe films and has potential applications for many semiconductor films.

Abstract
BackgroundSignal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a transcription factor that belongs to a class of targets devoid of catalytic function, thus deemed “undruggable” by standard modalities such as small molecule inhibitors or biologics. STAT3 can be activated by various receptor- and non-receptor tyrosine kinases, playing a critical role in activation pathways triggered by cytokines, hormones, and growth factors, making it an attractive target for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.ObjectivesKymera has developed heterobifunctional molecules that selectively target STAT3 for degradation and elimination by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. We sought to evaluate the pharmacologic potential of these STAT3 degraders through in vitro and in vivo studies relevant to human autoimmune disease, including murine collagen-induced arthritis.MethodsWe evaluated the impact of STAT3 degraders on the activation of human monocytes, dermal fibroblasts, CD4+ T cells, and PBMC by LPS, IL-6/IL-6R, IL-21, IL-23, as well as anti-CD3/CD28 plus a cocktail of cytokines and antibodies. STAT3 degradation and pSTAT3 inhibition were determined in comparison to a JAK1/2 small molecule inhibitor. Inhibition of cytokines, chemokines, and collagen release, as well as Th17 (CD4+CD25-RORγt+CXCR6+) and Treg (CD4+CD25+CD127lowFOXP3+) expansion were used as in vitro efficacy assays. Finally, STAT3 degraders were tested in vivo, in a mechanistic (IL-6 challenge) as well as a disease model (murine CIA) relevant to rheumatology indications.ResultsSTAT3 degraders showed broad and potent activity in-vitro against TLR receptor and cytokine-induced activation of immune and stromal cells, including soluble mediator release such as MCP-1/CCL2 and Collagen1a1. STAT3 degradation in CD4+ T cells robustly inhibited the development of Th17 cells, abrogating IL-17, IL-22, IL-8/CXCL8, and TNFα production, and increased Treg numbers in a manner superior to JAK1/2 inhibition. In mice injected with IL-6, plasma levels of serum amyloid A were dose-dependently suppressed by STAT3 degradation. In the murine collagen-induced arthritis model, STAT3 degradation resulted in robust, dose-dependent delay of disease onset and decreased disease incidence, clinical scores, local cytokine expression (paws) and histopathological scores, including the complete alleviation of periosteal bone growth.ConclusionThese data demonstrate the broad activity of STAT3 degradation in alleviating autoimmune inflammation in models relevant to human disease. Targeted protein degradation of STAT3 thus represents a novel therapeutic approach to treating autoimmune/autoinflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.Disclosure of InterestsCedric Hubeau Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Jeffrey Sullivan Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Crystal Brown Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Michele Mayo Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Vaishali Dixit Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Bradley Enerson Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Haojing Rong Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Bin Yang Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Chris De Savi Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Jared Gollob Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Nello Mainolfi Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics, Anthony Slavin Shareholder of: Kymera Therapeutics, Employee of: Kymera Therapeutics.

Sustained NPSLE development in the absence of systemic lupus-like disease in TLR7- deficient B6.Nba2. THE JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Neuropsychiatric Lupus (NPSLE) is a common manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) which includes presentations of cognitive learning and memory deficits and anxiety disorders. The B6.Nba2 mouse model of SLE presents with anxiety and depression. Toll-like receptor (TLR7), a known driver of type I interferons and SLE, drives systemic autoimmunity in the B6.Nba2 model, but whether TLR7-deficient B6.Nba2 mice develop NPSLE remains unknown.
Age-matched female B6, B6.Nba2, and B6.Nba2.TLR7 knockout mice (KO) were tested in open field (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM), Y maze (YM) and novel object recognition (NOR) tests between the ages of 8–32 weeks. To determine levels of systemic autoimmunity and inflammation serum autoantibody and tumor necrosis factor-related of apoptosis (TWEAK) levels were determined by ELISA.
Both B6.Nba2 and B6.Nba2.TLR7 KO mice presented with anxiety (OFT, EPM) and dysfunctional spatial memory (YM). B6.Nba2 mice displayed a general memory defect (NOR), but this was not seen in TLR7-KO mice. Only B6.Nba2 mice presented with elevated levels of anti-dsDNA autoantibodies and corresponding DWEYS-reactive antibodies. In contrast, serum levels of TWEAK were elevated in both B6.Nba2 and B6.Nba2.TLR7 KO mice, suggesting that signals other than TLR7 may drive inflammation in this model.
In conclusion, both B6.Nba2 and B6.Nba2.TLR7KO presented with elevated serum TWEAK levels, anxiety and memory deficits, despite only B6.Nba2 mice displaying anti-dsDNA and DWEYS-reactive autoantibodies. Thus in this model, NPSLE appear to develop in an autoantibody-independent fashion. Studies are ongoing to determine the nature of TLR7/autoantibody-independent NPSLE.

Abstract
Viruses from 15 of 35 maraviroc-treated participants with virologic failure and CCR5-tropic (R5) virus in the MOTIVATE studies at Week 24 had reduced maraviroc susceptibility. On-treatment amino acid changes were observed in the viral envelope glycoprotein 120 third variable (V3)-loop stems and tips and differed between viruses. No amino acid change reliably predicted reduced susceptibility, indicating that resistance was genetic context-dependent. Through Week 24, poor adherence was associated with maraviroc-susceptible virologic failure, whereas reduced maraviroc susceptibility was associated with suboptimal background regimen activity, highlighting the importance of overall regimen activity and good adherence. Predictive values of pretreatment V3-loop sequences containing these Week 24 mutations or other variants present at >3% in pretreatment viruses of participants with virologic failure at Week 48 were retrospectively assessed. Week 48 clinical outcomes were evaluated for correlates with pretreatment V3-loop CCR5-tropic sequences from 704 participants (366 responders; 338 virologic failures [83 with R5 virus with maraviroc susceptibility assessment]). Seventy-five amino acid variants with >3% prevalence were identified among 23 V3-loop residues. Previously identified variants associated with resistance in individual isolates were represented, but none were associated reliably with virologic failure alone or in combination. Univariate analysis showed virologic-failure associations with variants 4L, 11R, and 19S (P < 0.05). However, 11R is a marker for CXCR4 tropism, whereas neither 4L nor 19S was reliably associated with reduced maraviroc susceptibility in R5 failure. These findings from a large study of V3-loop sequences confirm lack of correlation between V3-loop genotype and clinical outcome in participants treated with maraviroc.Clinical trial registration numbers (ClinicalTrials.gov): NCT00098306 and NCT00098722.

Abstract
Fenfluramine hydrochloride, initially utilized as a weight loss drug in the 1970s and later removed from the market for adverse cardiopulmonary side effects, has since been repurposed as an antiseizure medicine (ASM). The potential antiseizure effects of fenfluramine were first identified in patients with photosensitive epilepsy in the 1980s but it was not rigorously explored as a treatment option until 30 years later. Compared with other ASMs, fenfluramine offers a novel mechanism by acting on serotonin and σ1 receptors, demonstrated in vitro and in vivo in animal models of Dravet syndrome. Results from a large double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated robust efficacy for seizure reduction in patients with Dravet syndrome, and met its primary endpoint with the 0.7 mg/kg/day fenfluramine treatment group experiencing a 62.3% or greater reduction in mean monthly convulsive seizure frequency (MCSF) compared with placebo. Here we provide a comprehensive review of the preclinical and clinical activity of fenfluramine, a recently approved drug for treatment of epilepsy in patients with Dravet syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcervical arterial ligation has been studied as a useful procedure to prevent bleeding events after transoral robotic surgery (TORS). METHODS A systematic review of English-language literature on arterial ligation in TORS from 2005 to 2019 was conducted using Cochrane, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), and ScienceDirect databases. Studies evaluating ligation and rates of postoperative hemorrhage were included. Meta-analysis of included studies was performed to assess impact of ligation on postoperative hemorrhage. RESULTS Five studies with 2008 patients were included. History of radiation (odds ratio [OR] = 2.26, P = .02) and advanced tumor stage (OR = 1.93, P = .02) were found to predispose patients to postoperative hemorrhage. Arterial ligation was protective against severe hemorrhage in the mixed primary surgical modality cohort (OR = 0.33, P = .03) and in the TORS-only subgroup (OR = 0.21, P = .02), but did not significantly impact overall odds of postoperative hemorrhage. CONCLUSION Transcervical arterial ligation offers protection against major/severe postoperative hemorrhage in patients undergoing TORS. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
CPAP therapy is prescribed to help manage disordered breathing during sleep time periods. Most users, especially those with non-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), use it only for some portion of their sleep period. Patients with Overlap Syndrome have both OSA and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While there has been some research on CPAP use levels in this patient population, there has been little indication that they use CPAP any differently than those with OSA only.
Methods
The O2VERLAP Study was a large comparative effectiveness trial enrolling people with COPD and OSA and using two different methods of providing information and support to current users of CPAP therapy. The study utilized an electronic national recruitment strategy and 332 participants were enrolled. CPAP data from the 12-week study period was analyzed. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to determine both estimated total sleep period (TSP) and total sleep time (TST). Because participants were all current users of CPAP, data from the total sample was combined and used. The percentage of TST and TSP that CPAP was used was calculated as CPAP use divided by either TST or TSP.
Results
The mean TST was 6.8 hours, TSP was 8.1 hours, and CPAP use was 6.7 hours. CPAP was used during 98.5% of the TST and during 82.7% of the TSP. Over 35% of the sample used CPAP at a level that was equal to or greater than their total sleep period.
Conclusion
Most OSA study populations use CPAP for some fraction of their night’s sleep. This COPD/OSA study population used CPAP to a markedly high level, including over one-third of the sample (n=~100) who used CPAP more than their self-reported sleep period. Further research on the extent and reasons for non-sleep period (i.e., daytime) CPAP use in COPD patients is warranted.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE) is a poorly understood manifestation of the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). NPSLE is characterized by symptoms including anxiety and depression, and recent data have suggested a pathogenic role for interferon-alpha (IFNα). Additionally, IFNα can diminish the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, suggesting a causative link between IFNα and NPSLE. B6.Nba2 mice develop SLE in an IFNα-dependent manner making it a valuable model for the study of NPSLE.
Methods
Age-matched female B6.Nba2 and B6 mice were tested. Behavioral studies included open field testing (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM), and fear conditioning (FC) tests for detection of anxiety-like behavior, and forced swim test (FST) for detection of depression-like behavior. Serum serotonin and dopamine levels were measured by ELISA and serotonin receptors were enumerated by IHC.
Result
Results from both OFT (p=0.001), EPM (p<0.05) and FC (p<0.05) tests supported a strong anxiety phenotype in B6.Nba2 female mice, while data from FST (p<0.05) suggested a depressive phenotype as well. B6.Nba2 females also showed significantly less serum serotonin (p<0.0001) and dopamine (p<0.05) levels than age-matched B6 females.
Conclusion
Our data suggests that the B6.Nba2 mouse model of SLE expresses an anxiety and depressive phenotype resembling NPSLE. Along with our previous data showing that IFNα levels are upregulated and required for disease development, our results suggest a positive correlation between IFNα, reduced serotonin, and an anxiety phenotype. Current studies are evaluating the effect of genetic IFNα-receptor manipulation in brain cells and the direct relationship between IFNα and NPSLE.

Abstract
The optimal time to initiate research on emergencies is before they occur. However, timely initiation of high-quality research may launch during an emergency under the right conditions. These include an appropriate context, clarity in scientific aims, preexisting resources, strong operational and research structures that are facile, and good governance. Here, Nebraskan rapid research efforts early during the 2020 coronavirus disease pandemic, while participating in the first use of U.S. federal quarantine in 50 years, are described from these aspects, as the global experience with this severe emerging infection grew apace. The experience has lessons in purpose, structure, function, and performance of research in any emergency, when facing any threat.

Exposure to microcystin among coastal residents during a cyanobacteria bloom in Florida. HARMFUL ALGAE 2020; 92:101769. [PMID: 32113588 DOI: 10.1016/j.hal.2020.101769] [Citation(s) in RCA: 32] [Impact Index Per Article: 8.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/05/2019] [Revised: 01/29/2020] [Accepted: 01/30/2020] [Indexed: 06/10/2023]
Abstract
Florida has experienced multiple cyanobacteria blooms in recent years the most severe of which occurred in 2016 and 2018. Several toxins are produced by proliferating cyanobacteria, including the hepatotoxin microcystin (MC). Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by cyanobacteria have the potential to impact public health. However, to date there have been limited attempts to quantify exposure in human populations. This study investigated potential exposure to the cyanobacterial toxin, MC by measuring concentrations in swabs of the nasal mucosa. In addition, the relationships between nasal concentrations of MC, environmental concentrations and activity patterns were assessed. Participants (n = 125) were recruited in 2018 during a cyanobacterial bloom of Microcystis aeruginosa and completed a questionnaire which included location, type, and duration of recreational or occupational contact with impacted waterways within the last 10 days. Water samples were collected concurrently. A sterile swab was used to collect a sample from the nasal mucosa. Concentrations of MC were measured by ELISA. Of the 121 participants who provided nasal swabs, 115 (95.0 %) had concentrations of MC above the limit of detection with a mean concentration of 0.61 + 0.75 ppb. There were significant differences (p < 0.01) in mean MC concentration between individuals with direct contact with impacted waters (0.77 + 0.88 ppb) compared to those with no recent contact (0.37 + 0.49 ppb). Higher concentrations were observed among occupationally exposed individuals. Nasal concentrations of MC varied significantly over time and location of exposure to the bloom, concordant with concentrations in water samples. The results suggest that inhalation of aerosols may be an important pathway for exposure to MC. Nasal MC concentrations were generally highest during periods when concentrations in the surrounding waters peaked. Further research is needed to characterize the public health implications of exposure to cyanobacterial blooms.

Abstract
Patients with head and neck cancer represent a vulnerable population at particular risk of opioid dependence due to frequent histories of substance abuse, requirement of extensive surgery, and the synergistic toxicity of multimodal therapy. Regional anesthetic techniques have been used by other surgical disciplines to facilitate early recovery after surgery and decrease postoperative patient narcotic requirements. This pilot study investigates the efficacy of a preoperative regional analgesia using stellate ganglion block in lateralized head and neck cancer surgery. From our early results, stellate ganglion blockade may hold promise as an effective preoperative intervention for controlling early postoperative pain, lessening narcotic requirements, and improving quality of life.

Abstract
Heavy metal contamination of herbal products is a major concern in the herbal and dietary supplement industry. Heavy metal exposure is well-documented to cause a variety of adverse human health effects and to negatively impact our environment. The Final Rule for Dietary Supplements for current good manufacturing practice regulation, 21 U.S. Food and Drug Administration Code of Federal Regulations 111, requires dietary supplement manufacturers to establish herbal purity limits for heavy metal contaminants considered safe for human consumption. Heavy metals may enter into the herbal manufacturing process via bioaccumulation from the harvest site or during postharvest processing phases, such as drying and/or liquid extraction. Traditionally, herbalists have used hydroethanolic solvents to extract herbal biomasses in pure food-grade ethanolwater combinations with solvent polarities capable of removing a wide range of hydrophilic and lipophilic constituents. The presented data demonstrate that hydroethanolic solvents are not completely efficient in the extraction of heavy metal accumulations from plant matrixes; and can act as an effective decontamination step in herbal product processing.

Abstract
Characteristic for devices based on two-dimensional materials are their low size, weight and power requirements. This makes them advantageous for use in space instrumentation, including photovoltaics, batteries, electronics, sensors and light sources for long-distance quantum communication. Here we present a comprehensive study on combined radiation effects in Earth's atmosphere on various devices based on these nanomaterials. Using theoretical modeling packages, we estimate relevant radiation levels and then expose field-effect transistors, single-photon sources and monolayers as building blocks for future electronics to γ-rays, protons and electrons. The devices show negligible change in performance after the irradiation, suggesting robust suitability for space use. Under excessive γ-radiation, however, monolayer WS2 shows decreased defect densities, identified by an increase in photoluminescence, carrier lifetime and a change in doping ratio proportional to the photon flux. The underlying mechanism is traced back to radiation-induced defect healing, wherein dissociated oxygen passivates sulfur vacancies.

Abstract
There are 3 histologically benign smooth muscle neoplasms that have unusual growth patterns. These include intravascular leiomyomatosis, benign metastasizing leiomyoma, and leiomyomatosis peritonealis desseminata. We report a unique case of perivascular leiomyomatosis. The tumor showed multiple nodules of benign smooth muscle with some of the nodules closely associated with the periphery of the medial muscle layer of venous channels. All the neoplastic nodules were located on the outer surface of venous channels, thus precluding a diagnosis of intravascular leiomyomatosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documentation of such an entity.

Encompassing new use cases - level 3.0 of the HUPO-PSI format for molecular interactions. BMC Bioinformatics 2018; 19:134. [PMID: 29642841 PMCID: PMC5896046 DOI: 10.1186/s12859-018-2118-1] [Citation(s) in RCA: 38] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/10/2017] [Accepted: 03/20/2018] [Indexed: 01/02/2023] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Systems biologists study interaction data to understand the behaviour of whole cell systems, and their environment, at a molecular level. In order to effectively achieve this goal, it is critical that researchers have high quality interaction datasets available to them, in a standard data format, and also a suite of tools with which to analyse such data and form experimentally testable hypotheses from them. The PSI-MI XML standard interchange format was initially published in 2004, and expanded in 2007 to enable the download and interchange of molecular interaction data. PSI-XML2.5 was designed to describe experimental data and to date has fulfilled this basic requirement. However, new use cases have arisen that the format cannot properly accommodate. These include data abstracted from more than one publication such as allosteric/cooperative interactions and protein complexes, dynamic interactions and the need to link kinetic and affinity data to specific mutational changes. RESULTS The Molecular Interaction workgroup of the HUPO-PSI has extended the existing, well-used XML interchange format for molecular interaction data to meet new use cases and enable the capture of new data types, following extensive community consultation. PSI-MI XML3.0 expands the capabilities of the format beyond simple experimental data, with a concomitant update of the tool suite which serves this format. The format has been implemented by key data producers such as the International Molecular Exchange (IMEx) Consortium of protein interaction databases and the Complex Portal. CONCLUSIONS PSI-MI XML3.0 has been developed by the data producers, data users, tool developers and database providers who constitute the PSI-MI workgroup. This group now actively supports PSI-MI XML2.5 as the main interchange format for experimental data, PSI-MI XML3.0 which additionally handles more complex data types, and the simpler, tab-delimited MITAB2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 for rapid parsing and download.

JAMI: a Java library for molecular interactions and data interoperability. BMC Bioinformatics 2018; 19:133. Abstract
Background A number of different molecular interactions data download formats now exist, designed to allow access to these valuable data by diverse user groups. These formats include the PSI-XML and MITAB standard interchange formats developed by Molecular Interaction workgroup of the HUPO-PSI in addition to other, use-specific downloads produced by other resources. The onus is currently on the user to ensure that a piece of software is capable of read/writing all necessary versions of each format. This problem may increase, as data providers strive to meet ever more sophisticated user demands and data types. Results A collaboration between EMBL-EBI and the University of Cambridge has produced JAMI, a single library to unify standard molecular interaction data formats such as PSI-MI XML and PSI-MITAB. The JAMI free, open-source library enables the development of molecular interaction computational tools and pipelines without the need to produce different versions of software to read different versions of the data formats. Conclusion Software and tools developed on top of the JAMI framework are able to integrate and support both PSI-MI XML and PSI-MITAB. The use of JAMI avoids the requirement to chain conversions between formats in order to reach a desired output format and prevents code and unit test duplication as the code becomes more modular. JAMI’s model interfaces are abstracted from the underlying format, hiding the complexity and requirements of each data format from developers using JAMI as a library.

Abstract
Species diversity of the genus Hemphillia Bland and W.G. Binney, 1872 (jumping-slugs) was studied across its range in western North America’s inland temperate rainforests. The taxonomic relationships among jumping-slug populations were clarified by integrating morphological, molecular, and biogeographic approaches. A new species, Skade’s jumping-slug (Hemphillia skadei sp. nov.), was discovered in this process and is described herein. We base this taxonomic decision on molecular comparison of representatives from other Hemphillia species and four morphological characters that distinguish H. skadei from its sister species, the pale jumping-slug (Hemphillia camelus Pilsbry and Vanatta, 1897). The distribution of H. skadei and H. camelus is described along with the notable lack of detection of the marbled jumping-slug (Hemphillia danielsi Vanatta, 1914) within the primary survey area.

Abstract
Objective This pilot study aimed to produce and evaluate training resources and training in oral health care, including oral hygiene, for carers in care homes in Surrey and Medway. Methods During two training days, for carers from these homes, short, interactive presentations were given on a range of topics relevant to oral health care and oral hygiene of older people, followed by practical training. Prior to any training all attendees completed a 39 question questionnaire to establish their baseline knowledge of oral health and hygiene. At the end of the training day they completed an evaluation form. Fourteen weeks later, they were visited at their place of work and completed the same questionnaire again. Differences in responses between baseline and after 14 weeks were statistically tested using the chi-squared test. Results Sixty-six carers attended the training sessions and 44 were followed up 14 weeks later. The results showed an improvement in carer knowledge at follow up. The majority of carers (36/44) spoke English as their first language. They had a mean age of 41 years, 37 were female and 7 male. They had worked as carers for a mean of 10.9 years (range 4 months-34 years). Over 90% stated that the training day fully met or exceeded their requirements and expectations. Conclusions The results indicated improvements in carer knowledge. However, the carers were atypical of carers in general, as they were self-selected and well-motivated. Nevertheless the content of the training day and the questionnaire should inform future work in this area.
