Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the currently available information on the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, adverse effects, drug interactions, and dosage guidelines of voriconazole. Comparative data for voriconazole and other azole antifungal agents are described where available. DATA SOURCES A MEDLINE search restricted to English-language articles (1966 to September 1999) was conducted, and an extensive review of journals and meeting abstracts was performed. MeSH headings included itraconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole, UK-109,496, and amphotericin B. DATA EXTRACTION The data on pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, and drug interactions were obtained from open-label and controlled studies and case reports. Controlled studies and case reports were evaluated to demonstrate the efficacy of voriconazole in treatment of various fungal infections. DATA SYNTHESIS Voriconazole is a derivative of fluconazole that demonstrates enhanced in vitro activity against existent and emerging fungal pathogens. Limited data have revealed a favorable pharmacokinetic and safety profile for the agent. Moreover, select clinical trials and case studies of voriconazole suggest good in vivo efficacy against several fungal pathogens including Candida, Aspergillus, and Scedosporium. CONCLUSIONS Voriconazole has shown promise in the treatment of superficial and systemic mycoses. While several unresolved issues remain, voriconazole may be a viable therapeutic alternative for fluconazole-resistant mucocutaneous candidiasis and in cases of mild to moderate systemic mycoses requiring chronic treatment or that are refractory to currently available agents.

Abstract
A number of structures with magnetic moments exists in living organisms that may be oriented by magnetic field. While most experimental efforts belong to the area of effects induced by weak and extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields, we attempt to give an attention to the biological effects of strong static magnetic fields. The influence of static magnetic field (SMF) on metabolic activity of cells was examined. The metabolic activity retardation is observed in human leukemic cell line HL-60 exposed to 1-T SMF for 72 h. The retardation effect was observed as well as in the presence of the mixture of the antineoplastic drugs 5 fluorouracil, cisplatin, doxorubicin and vincristine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The disease is associated with impairment of pro/antioxidant equilibrium and the inflammation in liver tissue. The aim of the work was to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of the nanocrystalline cerium dioxide (nCeO2) on the rat model of NAFLD associated with monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced obesity. METHODS The study was carried out on three groups of rats: control, MSG- and MSG+nCeO2. They were injected with saline (control) or MSG. A month after born MSG-rats had been treated with water in a volume of 2.9ml/kg, MSG+CeO2 groups - with CeO2 intragastrically (i.g.). The anthropometric and carbohydrate metabolism parameters, content of proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-12Bp40, interferon-γ (INF-γ)) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, tumor growth factor-β (TGF-β)) were measured by ELISA. RESULTS We have demonstrated the anti-obesity effect of nanocrystalline cerium dioxide and for the first time its anti-inflammatory properties. Nanoparticles reduced the content of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-12Bp40) in rat serum and restored the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, TGF-β) to the control values. CONCLUSION The precise mechanisms of this phenomenon remain to be unclear but we suppose they are at least partially associated with the strong anti-oxidant action of studied substance. Nanocrystalline cerium dioxide attenuates the inflammatory processes in rat blood that can prevent obesity complications and liver injury.

Abstract
Celery (Apium graveolens) and parsley (Petroselinum sativum), plants used worldwide in human nutrition, are the natural sources of methoxsalen. In this study we investigated the effect of mice pretreatment with juices of this plants on the hypnotic action of pentobarbital and analgesic action of paracetamol and aminopyrine, the drugs involving cytochrome P450 superfamily in their metabolism. In mice pretreated with celery and parsley juices a prolonged action of pentobarbital with respect to control was observed, statistical significance being attained only with parsley-pretreated animals. Both pretreatments increased and prolonged the analgesic action of aminopyrine and paracetamol, pretreatment with parsley being again more effective. Celery and parsley juices given to animals two hours before their decapitation caused a significant decrease of cytochrome P450 in the liver homogenate as compared to control.

Abstract
Introduction Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, is commonly used as antipyretic therapy in intensive care. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of parenteral diclofenac infusion on brain homeostasis, including brain-tissue oxygen tension (PbtO2) and brain metabolism after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods We conducted a prospective, observational study with retrospective analysis of 21 consecutive aSAH patients with multimodal neuromonitoring. Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), intracranial pressure (ICP), body temperature, and PbtO2 were analyzed after parenteral diclofenac infusion administered over a 34-minute period (20 to 45 IQR). Data are given as mean ± standard error of mean and median with interquartile range (IQR), as appropriate. Time-series data were analyzed by using a general linear model extended by generalized estimation equations (GEEs). Results One-hundred twenty-three interventions were analyzed. Body temperature decreased from 38.3°C ± 0.05°C by 0.8°C ± 0.06°C (P < 0.001). A 10% decrease in MAP and CPP (P < 0.001) necessitated an increase of vasopressors in 26% (n = 32), colloids in 33% (n = 41), and crystalloids in 5% (n = 7) of interventions. PbtO2 decreased by 13% from a baseline value of 28.1 ± 2.2 mm Hg, resulting in brain-tissue hypoxia (PbtO2 <20 mm Hg) in 38% (n = 8) of patients and 35% (n = 43) of interventions. PbtO2 <30 mm Hg before intervention was associated with brain-tissue hypoxia after parenteral diclofenac infusion (likelihood ratio, 40; AUC, 93%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 87% to 99%; P < 0.001). Cerebral metabolism showed no significant changes after parenteral diclofenac infusion. Conclusions Parenteral diclofenac infusion after aSAH effectively reduces body temperature, but may lead to CPP decrease and brain-tissue hypoxia, which were both associated with poor outcome after aSAH.

Abstract
Effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on human cell lines were described in numerous studies, but still many questions remain unanswered. Our experiment was designed with the aim of studying the effects of EMFs on the metabolic activity of chondrocytes in vitro. Human chondrocyte in vitro cultures, cultured in medium supplemented with 20 % fetal calf serum, were exposed to static magnetic field (SMF) (intensity of 0.6 T) and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) (21.2 MHz period of 15 ms, burst duration of 2 ms, amplification 3 dBm (0.1 V) and maximum output of 250 W) continually for 72 h. After the exposure, viability was determined using the MTT test and compared with a non-exposed control culture. As compared to the control sample the exposure to SMF resulted in a statistically significant increase (p 0.001) in viability. However, the increase of viability after PEMF exposure was not significant. This could be due to the frequency dependent effect on human cells. The experiments demonstrated that magnetic fields, using the above parameters, have a positive effect on the viability of human chondrocytes cultured in vitro.

Abstract
Seasonal breeding in two Sonoran desert passerines, the Cassin's (Aimophila cassinii) and Rufous-crowned (Aimophila ruficeps) Sparrows is thought to be terminated by the development of a decrease in responsiveness to photostimulation, a condition known as relative photorefractoriness. It was predicted that the development of relative refractoriness is a consequence of a decrease in gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) synthesis and associated stores of releasable GnRH. This hypothesis was tested by determining the luteinising hormone (LH) responses to the excitatory amino acid glutamate agonist N-methyl-D,L-aspartate (NMA) in males of the two species subjected to photomanipulations aimed at generating five groups: Fully photosensitive with undeveloped testes on short days (8L : 16D); fully photosensitive with developed testes on 13L : 11D; relatively photorefractory with regressed testes on 13L : 11D, and groups with developed testes held on 15L : 9D or 16L : 8D. LH release was stimulated in the Cassin's Sparrow by NMA most in the 8L group; to a lesser, but similar extent in the two 13L groups; and not at all in the 15L and 16L groups. LH release was not stimulated by NMA in any of the photoperiodic regimes in the Rufous-crowned Sparrow. In both species, NMA induced Fos-like immunoreactivity in the anterior and basal hypothalamus, but not in GnRH cell bodies. It is concluded that the development of relative photorefractoriness in Cassin's Sparrows is a consequence of reduced GnRH synthesis, reflected in a reduction in releasable GnRH. The lack of LH response of the Rufous-crowned Sparrows to NMA administration may be a consequence of high responsiveness to handling stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE Doxorubicin is an anthracycline drug which inhibits the growth of breast cancer cell lines. However, a major factor limiting its use is a cumulative, dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, resulting in a permanent loss of cardiomyocytes. Vitamin C was found to potentiate the cytotoxic effects of a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs including doxorubicin. The aim of the study was to describe the changes in protein expression and proliferation of the MCF-7 cells induced by the vitamin C applied with doxorubicin. METHODS Label-free quantitative proteomics and real-time cell analysis methods were used to search for proteome and cell proliferation changes. These changes were induced by the pure DOX and by DOX combined with vitamin C applied on the MCF-7 cell line. RESULTS From the real-time cell analysis experiments, it is clear that the highest anti-proliferative effect occurs with the addition of 200 µM of vitamin C to 1 µM of doxorubicin. By applying both the label-free protein quantification method and total ion current assay, we found statistically significant changes (p ≤ 0.05) of 26 proteins induced by the addition of vitamin C to doxorubicin on the MCF-7 cell line. These differentially expressed proteins are involved in processes such as structural molecule activity, transcription and translation, immune system process and antioxidant, cellular signalling and transport. CONCLUSION The detected proteins may be capable of predicting response to DOX therapy. This is a key tool in the treatment of breast cancer, and the combination with vit C seems to be of particular interest due to the fact that it can potentiate anti-proliferative effect of DOX.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the vasodilatation and vasomotion response to local heating in the cutaneous microcirculation of the ankle, dorsum of foot and forearm. Recently, it has been suggested that this response differs between the forearm and the leg. PROBANDS AND METHODS Twenty-nine young healthy adults were recruited. They underwent measurement by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in three sites of the body (ankle, dorsum of foot, forearm). Percentage change of the median flow of the skin before and after provocation and normalised perfusion flow to maximal dilation (cutaneous vascular conductance--CVC % Max) during short provocation test were monitored. Spectral analysis of laser Doppler flowmetry signals was performed using the fast Fourier transform algorithm. RESULTS Significant differences were found in CVC % Max between ankle/dorsum (45.18±6.38% Max vs. 51.24±6.87% Max, respectively; p<0.05) and between ankle/forearm (45.18±6.38% Max vs. 54.49±5.37% Max, respectively; p<0.05). Percentage change of flux after provocation has revealed significant differences between ankle/dorsum (394.1±204.5% vs. 577.4±273.5%, respectively; p<0.05) and ankle/forearm (394.1±204.5% vs. 637.1±324.7%, respectively; p<0.05). Total spectral activity of vasomotion has differed between ankle/dorsum and ankle/forearm: 69.59 [49.58-96.04] vs. 93.01 [73.15-121.8] (p<0.05) and 69.59 [49.58-96.04] vs. 107.5 [80.55-155.8] (p<0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Cutaneous microcirculation exhibits regional differences. Significant variability of function between ankle and dorsum of foot suggests that leg microcirculation is not uniform.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this experimental study, simplicity of measurement and wound tensile strength of wounds fixed by simple interrupted percutaneous suture (SIPS) and intradermal running suture (IRS) were compared. METHODS Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the experiment and separated into two groups: SIPS group and IRS group. Under general anesthesia, two parallel full-thickness (4-cm) skin incisions were made on the back of each rat. Wounds in the SIPS group were closed using 4 interrupted percutaneous sutures, whereas wounds in the IRS group were closed by intradermal running suture. Seven animals from each group were sacrificed at 2 and at 5 days after surgery for tensile strength testing. RESULTS The wound tensile strength of IRS wounds was significantly higher than that of SIPS wounds at 2 days (SIPS = 2.9 +/- 0.8 vs. IRS = 3.7 +/- 0.9 g/mm(2), p < 0.05) and at 5 days (SIPS = 5.6 +/- 1.3 vs. IRS = 7.1 +/- 1.2 g/mm(2), p < 0.01). In addition, the measurement of IRS wounds was easier and faster due to removal of only one suture. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the advantages of expanding the use of IRS suturing in experimental studies conducted on rats.

Abstract
The study was concerned with the effect of mice pretreatment with two commercial products of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni on the blood glucose concentration. One group of mice was pretreated four days with 200 mg/kg of Stevita (Stevita Co, INC, Arlington Texas) (stevia) and the other with 20 mg/kg of Clear Steviosides liquid (Stevita Co, INC, Herbal supplement, Brazil) (stevioside), whereas the animals of control group received at the same time physiological solution. Blood glucose concentration was measured before pretreatment and four days after that. The changes in glucose level were provoked by glucose-tolerance test (500 mg/kg, p.o.) and subcutaneous injection of adrenaline (0.2 mg/kg). The same procedure of measuring blood glucose was applied on the mice with alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus (two doses of 100 mg/kg with a 24-hour interval). Blood glucose levels in mice pretreated with stevia and stevioside were lower compared with control (7.82:6.82:8.01). Also, a smaller increase in this parameter compared to control was registered with pretreated mice in the glucose-tolerance test, pretreatment with stevioside being again more effective (8.68:6.36:5.82). Pretreatment with stevioside caused no significant increase in blood glucose concentration after administering adrenaline, which was not the case with the animals pretreated with stevia and control. Pretreatment with stevia, and to a greater extent with stevioside, protected test animals from the toxic action of alloxan compared with controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between insulin resistance and apoptotic endothelial-derived microparticles (EMPs) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS The study involved 300 CHF patients (186 males) aged 48-62 years with angiographically proven coronary artery disease and/or previously defined myocardial infarction. Insulin resistance was assessed by the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). EMPs phenotype was determined by flow cytofluorometry. RESULTS Depending on HOMA-IR cut-off point (over and <2.77 mmol/L×μU/mL) all patients were divided into two cohorts with (n=171) or without (n=129) IR, respectively. Circulating EMPs were higher in CHF patients with IR than in patients without IR. Interestingly, EMPs were directly related to NYHA functional class of CHF, HOMA-IR, NT-pro-BNP, hs-CRP and BMI. There was a significant association between the level of EMPs and HbA1c, gender (r=0.318, p<0.001 for male), age and smoking. On univariate and multivariate regression analysis we found that the NYHA class of CHF,NT-pro-BNP, hs-CRP, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) appeared to be independent predictors of increased circulatory apoptotic EMPs. The addition of HOMA-IR to the standard model (NYHA class CHF) improved the relative IDI by 19.9% for increased EMPs. For category-free NRI, 10% of events and 24% of non-events were correctly reclassified by the addition of HOMA-IR to the standard model for increased circulating EMPs. CONCLUSIONS IR may be a contributing factor increasing circulating levels of apoptotic EMPs in non-diabetic CHF patients.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Oxidative stress causes endothelial dysfunction which ultimately leads to atherogenesis, yet anti-oxidant therapy has failed to reduce human clinical outcomes. We hypothesise that endoplasmic reticulum stress and oxidative stress are both present in the endothelial layer of aorta with atherosclerosis. Rabbits were fed for 4 weeks a diet supplemented with 1% methionine +0.5% cholesterol (MC). Control animals received a normal diet. The endothelial function of the abdominal aorta was examined using organ bath techniques. Semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry was used to determine endothelial nitrotyrosine (for nitrative/oxidative stress) and glucose regulated protein 78 (GRP 78) and CHOP to determine endoplasmic reticulum stress. Endothelium dependent relaxation in response to acetylcholine significantly decreased in MC. Stress markers were significantly elevated in endothelia in MC compared to control. The total endothelial area examined for GRP78 increased by 8.4±0.25% in MC vs control (p=0.026) and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) increased by 21.9±0.05% in MC vs control (p=0.014). Nitrotyrosine increased by 13.3±0.03% in MC vs control (p=0.012). CONCLUSIONS Both endoplasmic reticulum stress and nitrative stress are present during endothelial dysfunction. Treatment directed at both stresses might be beneficial in the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The electrical properties of the supported lipid bilayer membrane (s-BLM) of egg phosphatidylcholine (PC) self-assembled on agar surface were examined. To characterize the insulating properties of s-BLMs, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used. The analysis of impedance spectra in terms of an equivalent circuit of agar/electrolyte and agar/s-BLM/electrolyte in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz-10 kHz was performed. The high-density lipoproteins (HDL)/s-BLM interaction in the concentration range from 20 microg/ml to 80 microg/ml of HDL was investigated. It is evident that treatment of s-BLM with HDL resulted in an increase of the lipid film resistance and a decrease of membrane capacitance.

Abstract
Tissue homeostasis mainly depends on the activity of stem cells to replace damaged elements and restore tissue functions. Within this context, mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts are essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis in skin, in particular in the dermis. Modifications in collagen fibers are able to affect stem cell features. Skin properties can be significantly reduced after injuries or with aging, and stem cell niches, mainly comprising extracellular matrix (ECM), may be compromised. To this end, specific molecules can be administrated to prevent the aging process induced by UV exposure in the attempt to maintain a youngness phenotype. NanoPCL-M is a novel nanodevice able to control delivery of Mediterranean plant myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) extracts. In particular, we previously described that myrtle extracts, rich in bioactive molecules and nutraceuticals, were able to counteract senescence in adipose derived stem cells. In this study, we analyzed the effect of NanoPCL-M on skin stem cells (SSCs) and dermal fibroblasts in a dynamic cell culture model in order to prevent the effects of UV-induced senescence on proliferation and collagen depot. The BrdU assay results highlight the significantly positive effect of NanoPCL-M on the proliferation of both fibroblasts and SSCs. Our results demonstrate that-M is able to preserve SSCs features and collagen depot after UV-induced senescence, suggesting their capability to retain a young phenotype.

Abstract
The laser radiation absorbed by cells induces production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), followed by the development of oxidative stress. Proteins are major targets for ROS due to their abundance in biological systems. The aim of the present pilot study was to examine the effects of transcutaneous laser blood irradiation (TLBI), i.e., low-level laser therapy (LLLT) at 830 nm on plasma proteome in Wistar rats. Rats were irradiated in the heart area (i.e. coronary arteries) daily (i.e., for 9-day period), by commercially available GaAsAl diode laser (Maestro/CCM, Medicom Prague, Czech Republic, lambda=830 nm, power density 450mW/cm(2), daily dose 60,3 J/ cm(2), irradiation time 134 sec). The comparison of blood plasma proteome from irradiated and non-irradiated rats was performed utilizing 2D electrophoresis followed by MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometry. LLLT led to a quantitative change in the acute phase proteins with antioxidant protection i.e., haptoglobin (log(2) fold change (FC)=3.5), hemopexin (log(2) FC=0.5), fibrinogen gamma (log2 FC=1.4), alpha-1-antitrypsin (log(2) FC=-2.2), fetuin A (log2 FC=-0.6) and fetuin B (log2 FC=-2.3). In comparison to conventional biochemical methods, the changes in protein levels in blood plasma induced by LLLT offer a deeper insight into the oxidative stress response.

Abstract
In acute myocardial infarction patients the injured vascular wall triggers thrombus formation in the damage site. Fibrin fibers and blood cellular elements are the major components of thrombus formed in acute occlusion of coronary arteries. It has been established that the initial thrombus is primarily composed of activated platelets rapidly stabilized by fibrin fibers. This review highlights the role of platelet membrane phenotype in pathophysiology of myocardial infarction. Here, we regard platelet phenotype as quantitative and qualitative parameters of the plasma membrane outer surface, which are crucial for platelet participation in blood coagulation, development of local inflammation and tissue repair.

Abstract
The effect of D-glucose and insulin on conducting properties of supported bilayer lipid membranes (s-BLM) modified by anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid (AQS) at the presence of potassium ferricyanide was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). Both the oxidation and the reduction current peaks were found to decrease at the presence of glucose in concentration range varying from 10 to 320 mM. The influence of insulin on membrane properties is ambiguous. While the pretreatment of membrane with 20 mU l(-1) of insulin evoked slight increase of the current with unchanged course of the dependence of peak current on glucose, the decrease of conductance was observed above 10(5) mU l(-1) of insulin.

Abstract
The interaction of alcoholic extracts of Magnum, Aroma and wild genotype hops with drugs that lower the activity of the central nervous system (CNS) was studied in mice. Hops drying and preparation of extracts were performed according to standard pharmacological procedures for preparing total alcoholic extracts of medicinal plants, i.e. in a ratio of one part dry herbs to two parts of 70% alcohol, with evaporation to dryness so that the extracts no longer contained any alcohol. The mice received four doses intraperitoneally (i.p.) of 0.5% aqueous solutions of the above-mentioned extracts, which were dissolved in warm physiological solution to make up a 0.5% aqueous solution, 24, 16, 4 and 0.5 hours before pentobarbital (40 mg/kg) or diazepam (3 mg/kg) administration. The hypnotic action of pentobarbital and the effect of diazepam on the coordination of movements (rotating rod method) were measured. It was found that hops extracts influenced the action of the investigated drugs, and that the extracts of the Magnum and Aroma genotypes suppressed the hypnotic action of pentobarbital and diazepam. Tert-butanolic extracts also suppressed the action of these two drugs but to a lesser extent, whereas wild hops extracts did not exert any significant effects compared to controls.

Abstract
This work describes a study of the interaction in the mouse model of alcoholic extracts of hops of Magnum, Aroma and wild genotypes with drugs that have excitatory effect on the cerebral cortex (cocaine) and analgesic action (paracetamol). Hop drying and preparation of the extracts were carried out according to standard pharmacological procedures for preparing total alcoholic extracts of dry herbs, consisting of one part of dry drug and two parts of 70% alcohol. The mice received four doses i.p. of 0.5% aqueous solutions of the above-mentioned extracts (10 ml/kg) 24, 16, 4 and 0.5 h prior to receiving cocaine (25 mg/kg) or paracetamol (80 mg/kg). The parameter investigated was the change in spontaneous motility of mice after combined treatment with the extracts and cocaine/paracetamol compared to control animals that received the same dose of the drug after treatment with physiological solution. Only the ethanolic extract of Magnum hops increased the spontaneous motility of mice, while none of the extracts showed analgesic action as measured by the hot-plate method. In the interaction with cocaine, the extract of Magnum hops suppressed almost completely the action of cocaine compared to controls. Extracts of the other hops also decreased the cocaine-induced locomotor activity of mice, but to a lesser extent. Hop extracts exhibited a significant pharmacological interaction with paracetamol, with the most pronounced increase in analgesic action being found for the ethanolic extract of Aroma hops and the tert-butanolic extract of wild hops.

Abstract
Pyramidal cells in the CA1 brain region exhibit an ischemic tolerance after delayed postconditioning; therefore, this approach seems to be a promising neuroprotective procedure in cerebral postischemic injury improvement. However, little is known about the effect of postconditioning on protein expression patterns in the brain, especially in the affected hippocampal neurons after global cerebral ischemia. This study is focused on the examination of the ischemia-vulnerable CA1 neuronal layer and on the acquisition of protection from delayed neuronal death after ischemia. Ischemic-reperfusion injury was induced in Wistar rats and bradykinin was applied 2 days after the ischemic insult in an attempt to overcome delayed cell death. Analysis of complex peptide CA1 samples was performed by automated two dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) fractionation coupled to tandem matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI TOF/TOF) mass spectrometry instrumentation. We devoted our attention to differences in protein expression mapping in ischemic injured CA1 neurons in comparison with equally affected neurons, but with bradykinin application. Proteomic analysis identified several proteins occurring only after postconditioning and control, which could have a potentially neuroprotective influence on ischemic injured neurons. Among them, the prominent position occupies a regulator of glutamate level aspartate transaminase AATC, a scavenger of glutamate in brain neuroprotection after ischemia-reperfusion. We identified this enzyme in controls and after postconditioning, but AATC presence was not detected in the ischemic injured CA1 region. This finding was confirmed by two-dimensional differential electrophoresis followed by MALDI-TOF/TOF MS identification. Results suggest that bradykinin as delayed postconditioning may be associated with modulation of protein expression after ischemic injury and thus this procedure can be involved in neuroprotective metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Endometrial cancer is one of the most frequent gynecological malignancies present in more than 95 % of all uterine cancers. In spite of that, screening of such disease is not commonly performed in clinical practice due to enormous costs and relatively low sensitivity. Therefore, developing an effective screening test to diagnose endometrial cancer at early stages is of great importance for the clinical area of investigation. In this work, we applied urinary proteomics (i.e., bottom-up proteomic approach followed by nano HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) in patients with endometrial cancer, with respect to find proteins aimed for the early diagnostics and screening. According to the results, the significant semi-quantitative changes were observed in urinary proteome of treated patients. The proteins that may be pivotal in pathogenesis of endometrial cancer, like cadherin-1 (CDH1), vitronectin (VTN) and basement membrane specific-heparan sulphate proteoglycan core protein (HSPG2) were down-regulated, when compared to the control group. Ultimately, it can be stated that urinary proteomics has a potential for the searching of cancer protein biomarkers based on their altered concentration.
