Abstract
The effect of storage temperature on the shelf life, weight loss, respiration rate and ethylene production of Hass avocado (Persea americana Mill) was studied. Two batches of green mature avocado fruits, classified as ‘‘super extra’’ were stored at 10 and 20 C (first batch) and at 7 and 25 C (second batch). The avocado shelf lives were 22, 8, 32 and 6 days at 10, 20, 7 and 25 C, respectively. Based on the data of the first assay Q10 was calculated as 2.75, with this value the predicted shelf life at 7 and 25 C were 29.8 and 4.8 days, respectively. That meant shelf life was underestimated 7 and 20% at 7 and 25 C, respectively. Weight loss was linear at both the storage temperatures, it was 4.3% in fruits at 20 C for 8 days and 3.0% at 10 C for 22 days. The maximum CO2 production at 20 C was reached during the second day of storage, while at 10 C it was reached at the 17th day (176.17 15.98 and 74.73 7.32 mL/kg h, respectively). The maximum ethylene production at 20 C was reached the second day of storage, and at 10 C the 6th day (239.06 54.55 and 28.00 8.12 mL/kg h, respectively).

Abstract
The neuropeptide, galanin, has been implicated in the regulation of rat growth hormone (rGH) release. In the present study, adult male rats were implanted dually with cannulae to the lateral cerebral ventricle and the right atrium. After surgical recovery, rats were infused with M-15, a specific galanin antagonist, into the lateral ventricle. During the course of this brain infusion, rats were subjected to serial blood sampling with red cell and artificial plasma replacement under stress-free conditions. Plasma was saved for rGH assay. Treatment with M-15 reduced rGH pulse amplitude and pulse frequency when compared to vehicle-infused controls. These data suggest that brain galanin participates in the ongoing stimulation of pulsatile rGH release in the adult male rat.

Abstract
We evaluated the performance of three highly practiced participants on three task types that comprised a simulated nuclear power plant control operation. Multiple subjective, physiological, and objective performance measures were collected on these three highly-practiced individuals. Results indicated ceiling effects in terms of performance accuracy, yet each individual adopted a unique response strategy across the respective sub-tasks. Their maximised accuracy was achieved at the expense of longer response times across differing sub-tasks. The measures which proved diagnostic and predictive of performance capacity were explored. The current conclusion presents us with an invidious problem in that performance and workload associations, insensitivities, and dissociations may be unique to each individual operator, and may well depend also upon the overall task in context. Such findings push our science away from seeking nomothetic assertions and toward individuated concerns. In consequence, the age of the idiographic may well be upon us. Practitioner summary: The importance and relevance of nuclear power control is self-evident. Concerns here have centred around the safety of the technology and its operators. Our work informs practitioners in this industry, and in Ergonomics in general, of the response of highly trained individuals in these safety-critical, operational domains. We show that even experts engage in personal and individual strategies, an observation critical to the assessment of this specific workplace, and potentially all others. Abbreviations: NPP: nuclear power plant; ROs: reactor operators; MCR: main control room; LOA: levels of automation; EOP: emergency operating procedure; OP: operating procedures; ISA: instantaneous self-assessment; DSSQ: Dundee stres state questionnaire.

Abstract
Knowledge of the estrous cycle and behavior is important in managing captive breeding programs. However, such information is negligible in spiral-horned antelopes, including the eland. In the present study, conducted between September 2007 and March 2008, we sought to characterize mounting activity and courtship behavior in a group of eight adult eland females. Estrus was induced in groups of four females by treatment with 25 mg PGF2 ∝ (IM, Lutalyse®, Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, MI, USA) administered after 7 days of daily oral progestin (5 mL of 2.2% altrenogest, DPT Laboratories, San Antonio, TX, USA) or 11 days after an initial treatment of PGF2 ∝ (25 mg). The eight females received each treatment in a crossover design. Females were induced and monitored during the induced and subsequent natural estrus for 34 to 38 days. Observations for estrus behavior were initially assisted by using Estrotect™ heat detector patches (Rockyway, Inc., www.estrotect.com). Since January 2008, the HeatWatch® electronic heat detection system (CowChips, Denver, CO, USA) and an androgenized eland female were used to assist with heat detection. For androgenization, 8 pellets of Synovex-H® (Fort Dodge Animal Health, Fort Dodge, IA) comprising a total dose of 1600 mg testosterone propionate and 160 mg estradiol benzoate were implanted (SC) on the convex side of the ear. To confirm mounting activity detected by Estrotect™ or HeatWatch®, eland behavior was recorded continuously using an 8-channel real time DVR. Chi-square analysis was used to test the association between time of day (day or night) and the frequency of standing to be mounted. The cycle length (n = 6 females) was the time interval (d) between the first mounts at the induced and natural estrus. The time of mounts was determined for a total of 52 mounts. More than half of the mounts (n = 32 or 61.5%) occurred between 6 pm and 6 am (night); however, there was no association between the number of mounts and time of the day (p = 0.886). Analysis of mounts by quarters of the day showed that mounts were evenly distributed between early afternoon (noon to 6 pm: 29%), late afternoon (6 pm to midnight: 33%) and early morning (midnight to 6 am: 29%) but were less frequent during late morning, between 6 am and noon (10%) possibly due to interference by human activities. The number of mounts observed per female ranged from 1 to 20. Mounts lasted for 2 seconds or less. The duration of estrus ranged from 2.1 to 29.0 hours. Typical courtship behaviors included prolonged head butting, flehmen response and following the female in estrus before mounting. The average length of the estrous cycle, based on mounting activities, was 19.3 d (range: 17–24). Although further studies are required in herds with eland males, the present results suggest that estrus detection for captive breeding or application of reproductive technologies in the eland should be spread around different times of the day and night. We have also demonstrated that an electronic mount detection system can be applied to assist with determination of estrus in the eland.

Abstract
Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a rare macrocytic red blood cell aplasia that usually presents within the first year of life. The vast majority of patients carry a mutation in one of approximately 20 genes that results in ribosomal insufficiency with the most significant clinical manifestations being anemia and a predisposition to cancers. Nemo-like Kinase (NLK) is hyperactivated in the erythroid progenitors of DBA patients and inhibition of this kinase improves erythropoiesis, but how NLK contributes to the pathogenesis of the disease is unknown. Here we report that activated NLK suppresses the critical upregulation of mitochondrial biogenesis required in early erythropoiesis. During normal erythropoiesis, mTORC1 facilitates the translational upregulation of Transcription factor A, mitochondrial (TFAM), and Prohibin 2 (PHB2) to increase mitochondrial biogenesis. In our models of DBA, active NLK phosphorylates the regulatory component of mTORC1, thereby suppressing mTORC1 activity and preventing mTORC1-mediated TFAM and PHB2 upregulation and subsequent mitochondrial biogenesis. Improvement of erythropoiesis that accompanies NLK inhibition is negated when TFAM and PHB2 upregulation is prevented. These data demonstrate that a significant contribution of NLK on the pathogenesis of DBA is through loss of mitochondrial biogenesis.
