Abstract
Ultrafast short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) photodetection is of great interest for emerging automated vision and spatial mapping technologies. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) stand out for SWIR photodetection compared to epitaxial (In,Ga)As or (Hg,Cd)Te semiconductors by their combining a size-tunable bandgap and a suitability for cost-effective, solution-based processing. However, achieving ultrafast, nanosecond-level response time has remained an outstanding challenge for QD-based SWIR photodiodes (QDPDs). Here, record 4 ns response time in PbS-based QDPDs that operate at SWIR wavelengths is reported, a result reaching the requirement of SWIR light detection and ranging based on colloidal QDs. These ultrafast QDPDs combine a thin active layer to reduce the carrier transport time and a small area to inhibit slow capacitive discharging. By implementing a concentration gradient ligand exchange method, high-quality p-n junctions are fabricated in these ultrathin QDPDs. Moreover, these ultrathin QDPDs attain an external quantum efficiency of 42% at 1330 nm, due to a 2.5-fold enhanced light absorption through the formation of a Fabry-Perot cavity within the QDPD and the highly efficient extraction (98%) of photogenerated charge carriers. Based on these results, it is estimated that a further increase of the charge-carrier mobility can lead to PbS QDPDs with sub-nanosecond response time.

Abstract
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a method to grow thin metal oxide layers on a variety of materials for applications spanning from electronics to catalysis. Extending ALD to colloidally stable nanocrystals promises to combine the benefits of thin metal oxide coatings with the solution processability of the nanocrystals. However, challenges persist in applying this method, which relate to finding precursors that promote the growth of the metal oxide while preserving colloidal stability throughout the process. Herein, we introduce a colloidal ALD method to coat nanocrystals with amorphous metal oxide shells using metal and oxygen precursors that act as colloidal stabilizing ligands. Our scheme involves metal-amide precursors modified with solubilizing groups and oleic acid as the oxygen source. The growth of the oxide is self-limiting and proceeds in a layer-by-layer fashion. Our protocol is generalizable and intrinsically scalable. Potential applications in display, light detection, and catalysis are envisioned.

Abstract
Indium phosphide quantum dots (InP QDs) are a promising example of Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS)-compliant light-emitting materials. However, they suffer from low quantum yield and instability upon processing under ambient conditions. Colloidal atomic layer deposition (c-ALD) has been recently proposed as a methodology to grow hybrid materials including QDs and organic/inorganic oxide shells, which possess new functions compared to those of the as-synthesized QDs. Here, we demonstrate that ZnO shells can be grown on InP QDs obtained via two synthetic routes, which are the classical sylilphosphine-based route and the more recently developed aminophosphine-based one. We find that the ZnO shell increases the photoluminescence emission only in the case of aminophosphine-based InP QDs. We rationalize this result with the different chemistry involved in the nucleation step of the shell and the resulting surface defect passivation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the ZnO shell prevents degradation of the InP QD suspension under ambient conditions by avoiding moisture-induced displacement of the ligands from their surface. Overall, this study proposes c-ALD as a methodology for the synthesis of alternative InP-based core@shell QDs and provides insight into the surface chemistry that results in both enhanced photoluminescence and stability required for application in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging.

Abstract
Colloidal InAs quantum dots (QDs) are widely studied as a printable optoelectronic material for short-wave infrared (SWIR) that is not restricted by regulations on hazardous substances. Such applications, however, require synthetic procedures that yield QDs with adjustable sizes at the end of the reaction. Here, we show that such one-size-one-batch protocols can be realized through temperature profiles that involve a rapid transition from a lower injection temperature to a higher reaction temperature. By expediting the transition to the reaction temperature and reducing the overall synthesis concentration, we can tune QD sizes from 4.5 to 10 nm, the latter corresponding to a band gap transition at 1600 nm. We argue that the temperature ramps provide a more distinct separation between nucleation at low temperature and growth at high temperature such that larger QDs are obtained by minimizing the nucleation time. The synthetic procedures introduced here will strongly promote the development of a SWIR optoelectronic technology based on InAs QDs, while the use of temperature profiles to steer a colloidal synthesis can find applications well beyond the specific case of InAs QDs.

Abstract
The application of CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) in the ultraviolet/blue region remains an open challenge due to charge trapping typically leading to limited photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PL QE) and sub-bandgap emission in core-only NPLs. Here, we synthesized 3.5 monolayer core/crown CdSe/CdS NPLs with various crown dimensions, exhibiting saturated blue emission and PL QE up to 55%. Compared to core-only NPLs, the PL intensity decays monoexponentially over two decades due to suppressed deep trapping and delayed emission. In both core-only and core/crown NPLs we observe biexciton-mediated optical gain between 470 and 510 nm, with material gain coefficients up to 7900 cm-1 and consistently lower gain thresholds in crowned NPLs. Gain lifetimes are limited to 40 ps, due to residual ultrafast trapping and higher exciton densities at threshold. Our results provide guidelines for rational optimization of thin CdSe NPLs toward lighting and light-amplification applications.

Abstract
Intra-band transitions in colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising for opto-electronic applications in the mid-IR spectral region. However, such intra-band transitions are typically very broad and spectrally overlapping, making the study of individual excited states and their ultrafast dynamics very challenging. Here, we present the first full spectrum two-dimensional continuum infrared (2D CIR) spectroscopy study of intrinsically n-doped HgSe QDs, which exhibit mid-infrared intra-band transitions in their ground state. The obtained 2D CIR spectra reveal that underneath the broad absorption line shape of ∼500 cm-1, the transitions exhibit surprisingly narrow intrinsic linewidths with a homogeneous broadening of 175-250 cm-1. Furthermore, the 2D IR spectra are remarkably invariant, with no sign of spectral diffusion dynamics at waiting times up to 50 ps. Accordingly, we attribute the large static inhomogeneous broadening to the distribution of size and doping level of the QDs. In addition, the two higher-lying P-states of the QDs can be clearly identified in the 2D IR spectra along the diagonal with a cross-peak. However, there is no indication of cross-peak dynamics indicating that, despite the strong spin-orbit coupling in HgSe, transitions between the P-states must be longer than our maximum waiting time of 50 ps. This study illustrates a new frontier of 2D IR spectroscopy enabling the study of intra-band carrier dynamics in nanocrystalline materials across the entire mid-infrared spectrum.

Abstract
Short-wave infrared (SWIR) image sensors based on colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are characterized by low cost, small pixel pitch, and spectral tunability. Adoption of QD-SWIR imagers is, however, hampered by a reliance on restricted elements such as Pb and Hg. Here, QD photodiodes, the central element of a QD image sensor, made from non-restricted In(As,P) QDs that operate at wavelengths up to 1400 nm are demonstrated. Three different In(As,P) QD batches that are made using a scalable, one-size-one-batch reaction and feature a band-edge absorption at 1140, 1270, and 1400 nm are implemented. These QDs are post-processed to obtain In(As,P) nanocolloids stabilized by short-chain ligands, from which semiconducting films of n-In(As,P) are formed through spincoating. For all three sizes, sandwiching such films between p-NiO as the hole transport layer and Nb:TiO2 as the electron transport layer yields In(As,P) QD photodiodes that exhibit best internal quantum efficiencies at the QD band gap of 46±5% and are sensitive for SWIR light up to 1400 nm.

Abstract
We address the relation between surface chemistry and optoelectronic properties in semiconductor nanocrystals using core/crown CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets passivated by cadmium oleate (Cd(Ol)2) as model systems. We show that addition of butylamine to a nanoplatelet (NPL) dispersion maximally displaces ∼40% of the original Cd(Ol)2 capping. On the basis of density functional theory simulations, we argue that this behavior reflects the preferential displacement of Cd(Ol)2 from (near)-edge surface sites. Opposite from CdSe core NPLs, core/crown NPL dispersions can retain 45% of their initial photoluminescence efficiency after ligand displacement, while radiative exciton recombination keeps dominating the luminescent decay. Using electron microscopy observations, we assign this robust photoluminescence to NPLs with a complete CdS crown, which prevents charge carrier trapping in the near-edge surface sites created by ligand displacement. We conclude that Z-type ligands such as cadmium carboxylates can provide full electronic passivation of (100) facets yet are prone to displacement from (near)-edge surface sites.

Abstract
Distant metastases of meningioma are rare, especially in grade 1 meningiomas. In a recent literature review, only 115 cases were found. In almost all published cases, the meningioma was treated several years before the metastasis was diagnosed. The lungs are the most frequent site of metastasis. We describe two patients treated for meningioma (one case grade 1, the other grade 3) who were referred to the Respiratory Oncology Unit because of the incidental finding of a pulmonary nodule on routine chest radiography. Both had undergone several neurosurgical procedures but the last operation was more than 7 years before in both cases. Positron emission tomography scan was suggestive of a malignant lung tumour. The lesions were surgically removed. Pathology confirmed meningioma in both cases with the same WHO grade, immunohistochemical and genetic profiles as the original meningioma. Both patients recovered well from thoracic surgery. The patient with grade 3 meningioma died three years later from intracranial recurrence. When a patient previously treated for meningioma develops a nodular lung lesion, metastasis of the meningioma should be in the differential diagnosis list. Because of the occurrence of distant metastasis even in grade I meningiomas, we suggest that the grading system should take into account genetic changes in the meningioma. Chromosome 1p and 14q losses possibly explain the aggressive behaviour of the grade 1 meningioma.

Abstract
The complete coding sequence of the nitrogenase reductase gene (nifH) is present in three different regions of a Rhizobium phaseoli symbiotic plasmid. Homology between two of the regions containing nifH coding sequences extends over 5 kilobases. These in turn share 1.3 kilobases of homology with the third region. The nucleotide sequences of the three nitrogenase reductase genes were found to be identical. Site-directed insertion mutagenesis indicated that none of the three genes is indispensable for nitrogen fixation during symbiosis with Phaseolus vulgaris. This implies that at least two of the reiterated genes can be functionally expressed.

Abstract
The aims of this study were firstly to characterise a model of subclinical and reversible bronchial inflammation induced by cadmium chloride inhalation in healthy dogs and then to examine the effect of prednisolone or salbutamol treatment on the resulting bronchitis. The model characterisation and the effects of treatment were studied using clinical symptoms, haematology, thoracic radiography, bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage, barometric whole-body plethysmography and histamine broncho-provocation tests. In addition, the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 were determined in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Cadmium inhalation induced: (1) a transient bronchial inflammation, dominated by neutrophils; (2) a neutrophilia of the blood that persisted for up to 4 weeks; (3) a transient increased bronchial reactivity, and (4) a significant increase in MMP-9 activity in the BALF. Prednisolone treatment reduced the influx of inflammatory cells into the BALF, but not significantly, had no effect on pulmonary function, and did not reduce of airway hypersensitivity. Salbutamol had almost no effect on any of the parameters investigated.

Abstract
In this paper, we describe the transformation of regenerable maize tissues by electroporation. In many maize lines, immature zygotic embryos can give rise to embryogenic callus cultures from which plants can be regenerated. Immature zygotic embryos or embryogenic type I calli were wounded either enzymatically or mechanically and subsequently electroporated with a chimeric gene encoding neomycin phosphotransferase (neo). Transformed embryogenic calli were selected from electroporated tissues on kanamycin-containing media and fertile transgenic maize plants were regenerated. The neo gene was transmitted to the progeny of kanamycin-resistant transformants in a Mendelian fashion. This showed that all transformants were nonchimeric, suggesting that transformation and regeneration are a single-cell event. The maize transformation procedure presented here does not require the establishment of genotype-dependent embryogenic type II callus or cell suspension cultures and facilitates the engineering of new traits into agronomically relevant maize inbred lines.

Abstract
We constructed two chimaeric ribonuclease genes that are specifically expressed in anthers of tobacco and rapeseed plants. The expression of these genes affects the production of functional and viable pollen yielding plants that are male sterile. This dominant gene for nuclear male sterility should facilitate the production of hybrid seed in various crops.

Abstract
The most abundant isoform of the 2S albumin present in seeds of Arabidopsis thaliana has been sequenced and the corresponding gene isolated. Examination of the protein and DNA sequences allows the determination of the exact proteolytic cleavage sites during posttranslational processing. Like other 2S albumins, that of Arabidopsis is made as a prepropeptide. After removal of the signal peptide, the propeptide is cleaved at four other points, giving two subunits linked by a disulfide bridge(s). Comparison of these cleavage sites with those of 2S albumins of Brassica napus and Bertholletia excelsa suggests that while individual cleavage sites between species are conserved, the four processing sites within a species are not similar, suggesting that up to four different proteases may be involved in processing 2S albumins. The Arabidopsis 2S albumin gene was used to isolate the entire gene family. There are four genes, tightly linked in a tandem array. None of the genes contains an intron. Comparison of the predicted protein sequences shows that only one of the genes can encode the isoform determined by protein analysis to be the most abundant, and therefore this gene is certain to be expressed. It is possible that some or all of the other three genes are also active.

Abstract
Phosphinothricin (PPT) is a potent inhibitor of glutamine synthetase in plants and is used as a non-selective herbicide. The bar gene which confers resistance in Streptomyces hygroscopicus to bialaphos, a tripeptide containing PPT, encodes a phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT) (see accompanying paper). The bar gene was placed under control of the 35S promoter of the cauliflower mosaic virus and transferred to plant cells using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. PAT was used as a selectable marker in protoplast co-cultivation. The chimeric bar gene was expressed in tobacco, potato and tomato plants. Transgenic plants showed complete resistance towards high doses of the commercial formulations of phosphinothricin and bialaphos. These data present a successful approach to obtain herbicide-resistant plants by detoxification of the herbicide.

Abstract
A two-component cloning system to transfer foreign DNA into plants was derived from the octopine Ti plasmid pTiB6S3. pGV2260 is a non-oncogenic Ti plasmid from which the T-region is deleted and substituted by pBR322. pGV831 is a streptomycin-resistant pBR325 derivative that contains a kanamycin resistance marker gene for plant cells and a site for cloning foreign genes between the 25-bp border sequences of the octopine T-region. Conjugative transfer of pGV831 derivatives to Agrobacterium and cointegration by homologous recombination between the pBR322 sequences present on pGV831 and pGV2260, can be obtained in a single step. Strains carrying the resulting cointegrated plasmids transfer and integrate T-DNA into the genome of tobacco protoplasts, and transformed tobacco calli are readily selected as resistant to kanamycin. Intact plants containing the entire DNA region between the T-DNA borders have been regenerated from such clones. In view of these properties we present pGV831 and its derivatives as vectors for efficient integration of foreign genes into plants.

The authors describe an unusual case of unilateral, nonfusion of the neural arch of the sixth cervical vertebra, documented with conventional X-ray examination and computed tomography. A brief review of other forms of congenital clefts is given and correlated with embryological findings.

Abstract
Rhizobium phaseoli CFN42 DNA was mutated by random insertion of Tn5 from suicide plasmid pJB4JI to obtain independently arising strains that were defective in symbiosis with Phaseolus vulgaris but grew normally outside the plant. When these mutants were incubated with the plant, one did not initiate visible nodule tissue (Nod-), seven led to slow nodule development (Ndv), and two led to superficially normal early nodule development but lacked symbiotic nitrogenase activity (Sna-). The Nod- mutant lacked the large transmissible indigenous plasmid pCFN42d that has homology to Klebsiella pneumoniae nitrogenase (nif) genes. The other mutants had normal plasmid content. In the two Sna- mutants and one Ndv mutant, Tn5 had inserted into plasmid pCFN42d outside the region of nif homology. The insertions of the other Ndv mutants were apparently in the chromosome. They were not in plasmids detected on agarose gels, and, in contrast to insertions on indigenous plasmids, they were transmitted in crosses to wild-type strain CFN42 at the same frequency as auxotrophic markers and with the same enhancement of transmission by conjugation plasmid R68.45. In these Ndv mutants the Tn5 insertions were the same as or very closely linked to mutations causing the Ndv phenotype. However, in two mutants with Tn5 insertions on plasmid pCFN42d, an additional mutation on the same plasmid, rather than Tn5, was responsible for the Sna- or Ndv phenotype. When plasmid pJB4JI was transferred to two other R. phaseoli strains, analysis of symbiotic mutants was complicated by Tn5-containing deleted forms of pJB4JI that were stably maintained.

Abstract
Seventeen in vivo and in vitro insertion mutations in the TR-region of the octopine Ti plasmid B6S3 of Agrobacterium tumefaciens were constructed. They include mutations in each of the five TR transcripts. All mutants retained their oncogenic properties and induced tumors with wild-type morphology. Determination of opines in tumors induced by mutant Agrobacterium strains showed that production of mannopine and agropine are TR-linked traits. Two transcripts are necessary for the synthesis of mannopine and a third one for the conversion of mannopine into agropine. None of the mutations prevents the excretion of opines. In addition, none of the five transcripts is essential for transfer and integration of the TR-region.

Abstract
A Ti plasmid mutant was constructed in which all the on-cogenic functions of the T-DNA have been deleted and replaced by pBR322. This Ti plasmid, pGV3850, still mediates efficient transfer and stabilization of its truncated T-DNA into infected plant cells. Moreover, integration and expression of this minimal T-DNA in plant cells does not interfere with normal plant cell differentiation. A DNA fragment cloned in a pBR vector can be inserted in the pGV3850 T-region upon a single recombination event through the pBR322 region of pGV3850 producing a co-integrate useful for the transformation of plant cells. Based upon these properties, pGV3850 is proposed as an extremely versatile vector for the introduction of any DNA of interest into plant cells.

Abstract
This paper describes a method for the transfer to plant cells of any cloned gene, regardless of its termini or internal restriction enzyme cleavage sites. A broad host-range intermediate vector, pGV1117, was constructed containing HindIII-23, a right-end T-region fragment of the nopaline plasmid pTiC58. Using in vivo protection by EcoRI methylase and EcoRI linker ligation, a fragment of rabbit chromosomal DNA, carrying the beta-globin gene, was inserted into plasmid pGV1117. Following transmission to Agrobacterium tumefaciens, insertion of the gene into the T-region of pTiC58 occurred via in vivo recombination. Infection of axenic tobacco seedlings resulted in the transfer to the plant genome of an intact beta-globin gene, as part of the T-DNA. Although the gene was stably maintained during tissue culture, beta-globin-specific transcripts were not detected in the transformed plant cells.

Abstract
DNA homology of thirteen R-plasmids of group P was examined by heteroduplex analysis and Southern blotting. Ten of these plasmids showed homology for extensive regions including all genes reported as necessary for replication and conjugational transfer. The differences between these plasmids could be explained by gain or loss of DNA sequences, many of which have been shown to be transposons. Of the other three plasmids, two showed unambiguous homology with the typical P-plasmids but this homology was imperfect, implying that these plasmids are products of lines which have evolved separately for long periods. One plasmid failed to produce heteroduplexes with the reference P plasmid.

Abstract
This article describes a case of osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis. The patient also has multiple sclerosis. The symptomatology includes a right sided conduction deafness and a left maxillar nerve deficit, which were both attributed to the bone disorder. The authors review the literature of this rare genetic syndrome and pay special attention to the neurological manifestations. These mainly consist of hearing loss, mental subnormality and occasionally the involvement of other cranial nerves. The bone scan in their patient shows hyperactivity in the left skull base region. This finding provides further evidence that, at least in some instances, the bone disorder has a progressive course.

Abstract
The TL-DNA in octopine crown galls encodes seven transcripts most, if not all, expressed from individual promoters. Site-specific deletions and substitutions in the T-region of the octopine plasmid pTiB6S3 indicate some of the functions of the TL-DNA transcripts. Two of the seven genes are sufficient to allow tumorous growth. T-DNA transfer and oncogenicity are controlled by different and independently acting functions. None of the transcripts of TL-DNA appear to be essential for T-DNA transfer. Four, possibly five, of the TL-DNA transcripts act by suppressing organ development. Shoot and root formation are suppressed by the action of different transcripts.

Abstract
A general method is described for the use of tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmids as experimental gene-vectors for plant cells. Intermediate vectors, containing specific Ti plasmid sequences and capable of replication in both E. coli and Agrobacterium strains, were constructed and used for the in vitro introduction of isolated DNA fragments into predetermined sites of the T-region derived fragments. Site-specific inserts and/or deletions-substitutions in Ti plasmids were produced by exchange of the modified T-region sequences for the wild-type sequence by in vivo recombination between intermediate vectors and resident Ti plasmids. This method was applied for the isolation of mutant Ti plasmids affecting either morphogenetic properties or opine synthesis in crown gall tumors. Foreign DNA, inserted at different sites in the T-region of both octopine and nopaline Ti plasmids, was shown to be cotransferred with the T-DNA and to be stably maintained in the transformed plant cells.

R68.45, a mutant R68 plasmid, carries a 1.5 Md DNA insertion near its kanamycin-resistance region. This DNA consists of a 1.2 Md DNA repetition of neighbouring R68-DNA and a 0.3 Md "foreign" DNA fragment that is flanked by this direct DNA repeat. This fragment seems to be involved in the formation of R'68.45 plasmids. Duplication of the 1.2 Md DNA sequence is also involved in site-specific recombination events of RP4. This 1.2 Md DNA fragment has the properties of an IS sequence and is denoted IS8.
