Abstract
OBJECTIVE Differences in the extent to which religious and scientific perspectives inform individuals' understanding of the world may affect their health and well-being. Yet minimal research has examined the influence of religious or scientific beliefs (or their relative influences) on health-related resources, behaviors, well-being, and stress responses, the focus of the current study. METHODS A national sample of 289 U.S. adults (mean age 34.42, 62.1% female, 67.5% White) was recruited through an online platform. Participants completed baseline and 11 nightly self-report surveys. RESULTS Higher reliance on religion was generally associated with greater psychological well-being (i.e. higher mindfulness, locus of control, positive affect; lower negative affect), while reliance on science was related to more COVID-19 distress. Contrary to hypotheses, scientific beliefs were not generally associated with a healthier lifestyle at the between-subject level, and higher reliance on both religion and science predicted more daily comfort food consumption. However, both belief systems buffered negative impacts of daily stress on physical activity at between-person (science) and within-person (religion) levels. CONCLUSION Results showed unique benefits and drawbacks of each meaning system on individuals' health behaviors and well-being. Future research is warranted to illuminate the intricate interplay between these two popular perspectives on the world.

Analysis of the influence of corneal properties and densitometry on applanation and rebound tonometry in primary open angle glaucoma. J Fr Ophtalmol 2023; 46:249-257. [PMID: 36739259 DOI: 10.1016/j.jfo.2022.08.013] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/10/2022] [Revised: 07/30/2022] [Accepted: 08/16/2022] [Indexed: 02/05/2023]
Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of corneal densitometry on portable applanation (Perkins) and rebound (iCare ic100 and PRO) tonometry. A secondary goal was to assess if there was a relationship between various corneal properties and the severity of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-five eyes of 75 patients with primary open angle glaucoma were studied, divided by severity into 3 groups: 25 mild, 25 moderate and 25 advanced. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured 3 times in each participant with a Perkins applanation tonometer (PAT), a handheld version of the Goldman applanation tonometer (GAT), an iCare PRO and an iCare ic100. Mean values were then calculated. Corneal topography with the Pentacam HR (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) was also performed in all individuals. RESULTS Mean age and sex were comparable in all groups, as were densitometry values (P>0.05). The mean visual field defect (MD) was 2.85 (±1.23) dB in the mild glaucoma group, 8.26 (±1.90) dB in the moderate group and 15.66 (±3.46) dB in the advanced group. Three multivariate regression analyses were performed. The first and second calculations assessed the effect of IOP obtained with iCare ic100 and PAT as dependent variables with age, sex, CCT and mean keratometry (Km) within the glaucoma subgroups and the global sample. The third analysis was carried out to assess the relationship between corneal densitometry as the dependant variable and the aforementioned corneal parameters among the glaucoma groups. In the first multivariate regression analysis, a statistically significant correlation was found between ic100 rebound tonometry and CCT in the POAG global sample (coef. 0.117; IC [-0.21-(-0.01)]; P=0.025). No statistically significant correlation was found in the subgroup analyses. In the second multivariate analysis, no significant correlation was found between PAT and CCT, Km, age or sex (P>0.05). In the third analysis, densitometry was correlated with age in all glaucoma subgroups (P<0.001) and with CCT in the moderate glaucoma subgroup (coef. -0.037; IC [-0.67-(-0.01)]; P=0.021). Tonometry appeared to be minimally influenced by corneal densitometry, with a mild positive linear correlation seen (R=0.03). IOP values were similar with 3 of the tonometers: PAT 16.07 (±3.18) mmHg, PRO 16.27 (±3.42) mmHg and ic100 15.17 (±4.28) mmHg. There was, however, a significant underestimation of IOP with ic100 (-0.89mmHg) compared to PAT (P=0.007). CONCLUSION Corneal densitometry did not show significant differences between glaucoma severity groups. A positive correlation was seen with CCT and both corneal densitometry and age. No correlation was found with keratometry or severity of glaucoma. The influence of corneal densitometry on IOP measurements appears weak, with little clinical relevance identified.

Abstract
Evaluating metagenomic software is key for optimizing metagenome interpretation and focus of the Initiative for the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation (CAMI). The CAMI II challenge engaged the community to assess methods on realistic and complex datasets with long- and short-read sequences, created computationally from around 1,700 new and known genomes, as well as 600 new plasmids and viruses. Here we analyze 5,002 results by 76 program versions. Substantial improvements were seen in assembly, some due to long-read data. Related strains still were challenging for assembly and genome recovery through binning, as was assembly quality for the latter. Profilers markedly matured, with taxon profilers and binners excelling at higher bacterial ranks, but underperforming for viruses and Archaea. Clinical pathogen detection results revealed a need to improve reproducibility. Runtime and memory usage analyses identified efficient programs, including top performers with other metrics. The results identify challenges and guide researchers in selecting methods for analyses. This study presents the results of the second round of the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation challenges (CAMI II), which is a community-driven effort for comprehensively benchmarking tools for metagenomics data analysis.

Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health issue that impacts both civilian and military populations. Factors associated with military service may result in increased risk of IPV perpetration among Veterans and Active Duty military personnel. Six bibliographic databases were searched to identify studies that estimated the prevalence of IPV perpetration among military populations by sociodemographic and military characteristics. Where possible, random effect meta-analyses were conducted to determine pooled prevalence estimates. 42 studies were eligible for inclusion in this systematic review. 28 of these studies met the requirements for inclusion in subsequent meta-analyses. Among studies that measured past-year physical IPV perpetration, the pooled prevalence was higher among men compared to women (26% and 20% respectively). Among Veterans, there were consistently higher prevalences compared to Active Duty samples. Similarly, higher prevalences were found among studies in general military settings compared to clinical settings. Further research that considers the impact of the act(s) of IPV perpetration on the victims is needed. This, along with the use of a consistent measurement tools across studies will help to develop a stronger evidence base to inform prevention and management programs for all types of IPV perpetration among military personnel.

Abstract
Abstract
Three food types were analyzed for the presence of Salmonella by the AOAC culture method and by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 6579:2002) culture method. Paired test portions of each food type were simultaneously analyzed by both methods. A total of 21 laboratories representing federal government agencies and private industry, in the United States and Europe, participated in this interlaboratory study. Foods were artificially contaminated with Salmonella and competing microflora if naturally contaminated sources were not available. No statistical differences (p < 0.05) were observed between the AOAC and ISO culture methods for fresh cheese and dried egg products. A statistically significant difference was observed for one of the 2 lots of poultry from the first trial. The poultry meat used in this run was radiation sterilized, artificially contaminated with Salmonella and competitive flora, and then lyophilized. A second trial was conducted with 2 separate lots of raw ground chicken that were naturally contaminated. The results from the second trial showed no statistical difference between the 2 culture methods. A third trial involving 4 laboratories was conducted on 2 separate lots of naturally contaminated raw poultry. Again, no statistically significant differences occurred. It is recommended that ISO 6579:2002 culture method for Salmonella be adopted Official First Action for the analysis of fresh cheese, fresh chilled and frozen poultry, and dried egg products.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Patients with vasospastic angina (VA) may have recurrent chest symptoms and life-threatening arrhythmias. Despite regular medications, many VA patients experience recurrent episodes of VA. In this study, we evaluate clinical and angiographic predictors of recurrent VA.
Patients and methods
From January 2010 to May 2018, a total of 858 patients who underwent ergonovine provocation test were retrospectively reviewed. We excluded the patients who had negative results of provocation test, follow up duration less than 1 month and poor medication compliance. The recurrent-VA group consisted of patients who were re-hospitalized, visited the emergency room, or had repeated coronary angiographies because of chest pain.
Results
A total of 858 patients who underwent ergonovine provocation tests between January 2010 to May 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Of them, 162 (mean follow-up duration, 3.0 years) were eligible for our study. The patients were divided into two groups: recurrent-VA (n=33, 20.4%) and stable-VA groups (n=129, 79.6%). Compared with the stable-VA group, the recurrent-VA group consisted mostly of men (93.9% vs. 75.2%, P=0.01), and had low LDL-cholesterol levels (93±27 mg/dl vs. 108±31 mg/dl, P=0.01). In the angiographic findings, a degree of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the site and number of spasm-positive vessels showed no difference between the two groups. Nicorandil was more frequently prescribed at discharge in the stable-VA group (15.2% vs. 35.7%, P=0.02). In the multivariate analysis, the male sex (odds ratio [OR], 5.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31–26.22; P=0.02) and non-use of nicorandil (OR, 3.51; 95% CI, 1.25–9.84; P=0.01) were the independent predictive factors in the recurrent-VA group. In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, men who did not use nicorandil (n=85, 52.5%) had higher incidences of recurrent angina compared to the other group (n=77, 47.5%). (30.6% vs. 6.6%; p<0.001).

DNA
sequencing of a large collection of bacterial genomes reveals
a wealth of orphan biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) with no identifiable
products. BGC silencing, for those orphan clusters that are truly
silent, rather than those whose products have simply evaded detection
and cluster correlation, is postulated to result from transcriptional
inactivation of these clusters under standard laboratory conditions.
Here, we employ a multi-omics approach to demonstrate how interspecies
interactions modulate the keyicin producing kyc cluster
at the transcriptome level in cocultures of kyc-bearing Micromonospora sp. and a Rhodococcus sp.
We further correlate coculture dependent changes in keyicin production
to changes in transcriptomic and proteomic profiles and show that
these changes are attributable to small molecule signaling consistent
with a quorum sensing pathway. In piecing together the various elements
underlying keyicin production in coculture, this study highlights
how omics technologies can expedite future efforts to understand and
exploit silent BGCs.

Abstract
Due to the continuing global concerns involving antibiotic resistance, there is a need for scientific forums to assess advancements in the development of antimicrobials and their alternatives that might reduce development and spread of antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens. The objectives of the 2nd International Symposium on Alternatives to Antibiotics were to highlight promising research results and novel technologies that can provide alternatives to antibiotics for use in animal health and production, assess challenges associated with their authorization and commercialization for use, and provide actionable strategies to support their development. The session on microbial-derived products was directed at presenting novel technologies that included exploiting CRISPR-Cas nucleases to produce sequence-specific antimicrobials, probiotics development via fecal microbiome transplants among monogastric production animals such as chickens and mining microbial sources such as bacteria or yeast to identify new antimicrobial compounds. Other research has included continuing development of antimicrobial peptides such as newly discovered bacteriocins as alternatives to antibiotics, use of bacteriophages accompanied by development of unique lytic proteins with specific cell-wall binding domains and novel approaches such as microbial-ecology guided discovery of anti-biofilm compounds discovered in marine environments. The symposium was held at the Headquarters of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in Paris, France during 12-15 December 2016.

Abstract
Chemistry drives many biological interactions between the microbiota and host animals, yet it is often challenging to identify the chemicals involved. This poses a problem, as such small molecules are excellent sources of potential pharmaceuticals, pretested by nature for animal compatibility. We discovered anti-HIV compounds from small, marine tunicates from the Eastern Fields of Papua New Guinea. Tunicates are a reservoir for novel bioactive chemicals, yet their small size often impedes identification or even detection of the chemicals within. We solved this problem by combining chemistry, metagenomics, and synthetic biology to directly identify and synthesize the natural products. We show that these anti-HIV compounds, the divamides, are a novel family of lanthipeptides produced by symbiotic bacteria living in the tunicate. Neighboring animal colonies contain structurally related divamides that differ starkly in their biological properties, suggesting a role for biosynthetic plasticity in a native context where biological interactions take place.

Abstract
AIMS To demonstrate safety and efficacy of haploidentical bone marrow transplantation with non-myeloablative conditioning and high-dose post-transplant cyclophosphamide in adult patients with leukaemia or lymphoma. BACKGROUND Human leukocyte antigen haploidentical bone marrow transplantation is a treatment option in patients with haematological malignancies who have no available human leukocyte antigen-matched donor but is limited by conditioning regimen toxicity, graft failure, relapse and graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). METHODS Twelve patients, median age of 51 years, underwent transplantation with T cell replete bone marrow from a haplotype-matched relative. The conditioning regimen consisted of cyclophosphamide, fludarabine and low-dose total body irradiation. Post-transplant immunosuppression consisted of a single dose of cyclophosphamide 50 mg/kg on day 3, followed by oral tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil. Outcomes reported are overall survival, engraftment and chimerism, toxicity, and clinical outcome. RESULTS All patients had neutrophil recovery (median 14.5 days), and 11 of 12 had platelet engraftment (median 17 days). Two patients had autologous reconstitution. Seven of nine assessable patients had complete donor chimerism. Four patients had grades II-III GvHD, and none had grade IV GvHD. Four patients developed limited stage chronic GvHD. Five patients with acute myeloid leukaemia relapsed. Two patients died of nonrelapse causes, both from other malignancies, and five patients remain alive and relapse free. Median overall survival was 324 days (range 88-1163). CONCLUSION This regimen is feasible and well tolerated in older patients with high-risk leukaemia or lymphoma, with minimal short-term toxicity and low rates of GvHD. The proportion of disease-free survivors indicates a graft-versus-malignancy effect is present in survivors.

How does cognitive impairment impact on functional improvement following the rehabilitation of elderly patients? Int J Clin Pract 2013; 67:811-5. Abstract
AIMS It has been suggested that patients with cognitive impairment do not benefit from rehabilitation or that rehabilitation gains are reduced. Most studies focus on absolute gain rather than gains in individual functional areas. The Barthel activities of daily living (ADL) score is a tool, which is used widely and comprises 10 functional domains. This study aimed to assess the response to rehabilitation based on improvement or deterioration on the Barthel ADL score for patients with different cognitive abilities METHODS This independence measure was assessed at specific time periods in an observational study of 241 patients undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Therapy was delivered formally by physiotherapists and occupational therapists and also informally by nursing staff. Patients were divided into four groups according to cognition. Group 1 (MMSE, mini-mental state examination 27-30), normal cognition, Group 2 (MMSE 21-26) mild impairment, Group 3 (MMSE 11-20) moderate impairmentand Group 4 (MMSE 0-10) severe impairment. RESULTS Statistically significant improvement was made in most of the functional domains by patients with normal cognition and mild cognitive impairment (p < 0.0025). The exception to this for both groups was in the areas of feeding and bowels because of the fact that most patients were independent with these aspects on admission. Group 3 patients made improvements in the domains of grooming, dressing, toileting, transferring and mobility. Group 4 patients did not demonstrate statistically significant improvement in any domain although there were trends for improvement in mobility and transferring. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that cognitive impairment did have an impact on the ADL that patients improved in following rehabilitation. However, even patients with moderate cognitive impairment made significant gains with many ADL.

Critical role of the STAT3 pathway in the cardioprotective efficacy of zoniporide in a model of myocardial preservation - the rat isolated working heart. Br J Pharmacol 2011; 162:633-47. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ischemia-reperfusion injury plays an important role in the development of primary allograft failure after heart transplantation. Inhibition of the Na+/H+ exchanger is one of the most promising therapeutic strategies for treating ischemia-reperfusion injury. Here we have characterized the cardioprotective efficacy of zoniporide and the underlying mechanisms in a model of myocardial preservation using rat isolated working hearts. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Rat isolated hearts subjected to 6 h hypothermic (1-4°C) storage followed by 45 min reperfusion at 37°C were treated with zoniporide at different concentrations and timing. Recovery of cardiac function, levels of total and phosphorylated protein kinase B, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, glycogen synthase kinase-3β and STAT3 as well as cleaved caspase 3 were measured at the end of reperfusion. Lactate dehydrogenase release into coronary effluent before and post-storage was also measured. KEY RESULTS Zoniporide concentration-dependently improved recovery of cardiac function after reperfusion. The functional recovery induced by zoniporide was accompanied by up-regulation of p-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and p-STAT3, and by reduction in lactate dehydrogenase release and cleaved caspase 3. There were no significant differences in any of the above indices when zoniporide was administered before, during or after ischemia. The STAT3 inhibitor, stattic, abolished zoniporide-induced improvements in functional recovery and up-regulation of p-STAT3 after reperfusion. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Zoniporide is a potent cardioprotective agent and activation of STAT3 plays a critical role in the cardioprotective action of zoniporide. This agent shows promise as a supplement to storage solutions to improve preservation of donor hearts.
