Abstract
Fast inverted, oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions, also known as SWitch-Oil-Phase (SWOP) emulsions, express the performances of both o/w and water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions during application to the skin, favoring their use as cosmetic carriers in sunscreen products. The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant potential (by 2 different methods) and the ultraviolet (UV) absorption ability of SWOP emulsion (S) with incorporated plant-based antioxidants dihydroquercetin (DHQ) and β-carotene (βC), using quercetin (Q) in a reference emulsion, in addition to the evaluation of their physicochemical properties and stability. A new biochemical extracellular model for in vitro assessment of antioxidative properties for the SWOP emulsions (S, SQ, SDHQ, and SDHQβC) was developed and compared with the results of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The analyses were performed at 20 °C and 37 °C, and oxidative stress parameters were monitored and statistically analyzed. The sun protection factor (SPF) of the samples was determined in vitro. Q and DHQ incorporated into the SWOP emulsion exhibited a strong DPPH radical scavenging ability. Neither incorporated nor pure βC showed DPPH radical scavenging ability at the tested concentrations. Contrary to that, in the bioenvironment conditions, SDHQβC showed minor antioxidative effects increase and also a significant decrease in exogenous pro-oxidative effects, caused by pro-oxidant, when compared to SDHQ. The obtained SPFs of SDHQβC, SDHQ, and SQ were 5.19, 4.65, and 3.35, respectively. The physicochemical stability of the emulsions was satisfactory during 1 month storage. The presented results demonstrated that the SWOP emulsion is a suitable carrier for antioxidants with a photoprotective ability. The novel biochemical approach could be used in addition to DPPH assay with several advantages, relevant for the testing of antioxidant activity of potential active ingredients in cosmetic products.

Potentiation of the ibuprofen antihyperalgesic effect using inorganically functionalized diatomite. J Mater Chem B 2018; 6:5812-5822. Abstract
Refined diatomite from the Kolubara coal basin (Serbia) was inorganically functionalized through a simple, one-pot, non-time-consuming procedure. Model drug ibuprofen was adsorbed on the functionalized diatomite under optimized conditions providing high drug loading (∼201 mg g-1). Physicochemical characterization was performed on the starting and modified diatomite before and after ibuprofen adsorption. Dissolution testing was conducted on comprimates containing the drug adsorbed on the modified diatomite (composite) and those containing a physical mixture of the drug with the modified diatomite. The antihyperalgesic and the antiedematous activity of ibuprofen from both composites and physical mixtures were evaluated in vivo employing an inflammatory pain model in rats. Functionalization and subsequent drug adsorption had no significant effect on the diatomite ordered porous structure. Two forms of ibuprofen most likely coexisted in the adsorbed state - the acidic form and a salt/complex with aluminium. Both comprimate types showed extended ibuprofen release in vitro, but no significant influence on the duration of the ibuprofen effect was observed upon in vivo application of the composite or physical mixture. However, both the composite and the physical mixture were more effective than equivalent doses of ibuprofen in pain suppression in rats. This potentiation of the ibuprofen antihyperalgesic effect may result from the formation of the drug complex with the carrier and can be of clinical relevance.

Abstract
Black soybean coat is insufficiently valorised food production waste rich in anthocyanins. The goal of the study was to examine physicochemical properties of spray dried extract of black soybean coat in regard to carrier materials: maltodextrin, gum Arabic, and skimmed milk powder. Maltodextrin and gum Arabic-based microparticles were spherical and non-porous while skimmed milk powder-based were irregularly shaped. Low water activity of microparticles (0.31-0.33), good powders characteristics, high solubility (80.3-94.3%) and encapsulation yields (63.7-77.0%) were determined. All microparticles exhibited significant antioxidant capacity (243-386 μmolTE/g), good colour stability after three months of storage and antimicrobial activity. High content of total anthocyanins, with cyanidin-3-glucoside as predominant, were achieved. In vitro release of anthocyanins from microparticles was sustained, particularly from gum Arabic-based. These findings suggest that proposed simple eco-friendly extraction and microencapsulation procedures could serve as valuable tools for valorisation and conversion of black soybean coat into highly functional and stable food colourant.

Abstract
In this study, organozeolites were prepared by treatment of the natural zeolites (clinoptilolite and phillipsite) with cetylpyridinium chloride (CP) equivalent to 50 and 100% of their external cation exchange capacities (ECEC). Organoclinoptilolites (ZCPs) and organophillipsites (PCPs) were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, determination of the point of zero charge and zeta potential. Adsorption of zearalenone (ZEN) by ZCPs and PCPs at pH 3 and 7 was investigated. Results showed that adsorption of ZEN increases with increasing amounts of CP at the zeolitic surfaces for both ZCPs and PCPs but the adsorption mechanism was different. Adsorption of ZEN by ZCPs followed a linear type of isotherm at pH 3 and 7 while ZEN adsorption by PCPs showed non linear (Langmuir and Freundlich) type of isotherm at both pH values. Different interactions between the ZEN molecule (or ion) and ZCPs and PCPs occurred: partition (linear isotherms) and adsorption in addition to partition (non linear isotherms), respectively. For the highest level of organic phase at the zeolitic surfaces, the maximum adsorbed amount of ZEN was 5.73mg/g for organoclinoptilolite and 6.86mg/g for organophillipsite at pH 3. Slightly higher adsorption: 6.98mg/g for organoclinoptilolite and 7.54mg/g for organophillipsite was achieved at pH 7. The results confirmed that CP ions at both zeolitic surfaces are responsible for ZEN adsorption and that organophillipsites are as effective in ZEN adsorption as organoclinoptilolites.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of extemporaneous compounding of slow-release oral dosage form of niacinamide and to evaluate its release kinetics. The model formulation (preparation) was developed in the form of powder-filled hard gelatin capsules. Two slow-release preparations with different ratios of hypromellose have been prepared and evaluated in comparison with an immediate-release preparation. The dissolution tests were performed as per United States Pharmacopoeia requirements: Type I Apparatus, over 7 hours. Both slow-release preparations, containing 40% and 60% v/v hypromellose, respectively, have showed slow release kinetics. The dissolution profiles were significantly different, with similarity factor f2<50. The dissolution data demonstrated Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics with n values indicating anomalous transport. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that slow-release niacinamide capsules can be successfully compounded using hypromellose as a sole release rate modifier, and that the release mechanism is comparable to hydrophilic polymer matrix-based systems.

Abstract
In this applicative study, the ratio of active and inactive filler loadings was the prime factor for determining the dynamic-mechanical behaviour of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubbers. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the structure of reinforced dense and microcellular elastomeric materials. The effects of filler and blowing agent content on the morphology of composites were investigated. Microcellular samples cured in salt bath show smaller cells and uniform cell size compared with samples cured in hot air. Dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis showed appreciable changes in the viscoelastic properties by increasing active filler content, which could enable tailoring the material properties to suit sealing applications.

Abstract
The affinity of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) (DEET) for various polymers that are potential inert carriers (PEG, PVP, NaCMC, PAA) was studied. Mixtures of DEET and the polymers were prepared and analysed for DEET vapour release using head space analysis. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) showed the highest affinity for DEET. Several insect repellent formulations in the form of a hydrogel, an o/w cream and a stick were prepared with 5% w/w DEET and either 1% w/w or no PVP. The release of DEET from the formulations was investigated by Head Space gas-mass spectrometry at 32 degrees C. The degree of absorption of DEET through the skin was evaluated by applying these topical preparations to shaved rabbit skin and measuring DEET content in the blood samples by gas-mass spectrometry at various time intervals after application. Based on these results the pharmacokinetic parameters were determined. The minimum penetration of DEET through rabbit skin was obtained with a hydrogel containing PVP as a carrier. The biological efficiency of repellent formulations containing 5% DEET (w/w) was evaluated for repellency using the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The results demonstrated that the hydrogel formulation based on polyacrylic acid containing 5% DEET (w/w) supplemented with 1% PVP (w/w), could serve as a suitable vehicle for repellent preparations containing DEET.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop and characterize hydrophilic gels containing chlorophyllin(CHL)-loaded liposomes as well as to evaluate their stability. Two different CHL-loaded liposome dispersions using non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated soybean lecithin were prepared, characterized for their particle size, polydispersity index and trapping efficiency and incorporated in Carbopol 940 NF hydrogel. The gels obtained were analyzed for flow properties, pH values and CHL content. The control liposome-free gel was obtained by incorporating the CHL solution in the hydrogel. The stability of the gels was evaluated in terms of rheological properties, pH values and CHL content during 6 months' storage at 20 +/- 2 degrees C. Suitable gel formulations for topical use were obtained revealing shear-thinning plastic flow behaviour without significant thixotropy during the whole period of examination. High yield values of the samples during the whole period indicated a long-term stability of the gel formulations. The gel formulations expressed a mild acid value acceptable for topical preparations. After 6 months' storage the CHL content was highest in the gel containing non-hydrogenated lecithin liposomes, followed by the gel containing hydrogenated lecithin liposomes and liposome-free gel, indicating that the encapsulation of CHL in liposomes led to a greater stability of CHL.

Abstract
In the course of investigation of the effects of polymeric emulsifier (Simulgel A) on the structural characteristics and physical stability (during storage time) of semisolid o/w emulsion systems with different emulsifier concentrations, dispersed droplets of an internal oil phase (4.5-11.5 microm size) were discovered. The degree of dispersity was increased along with increasing polymeric emulsifier concentration (from 1 to 5% m/m), which was shown by microscopic analysis. Experiments were also carried out using pH, electrical conductivity, and rheological (rotational and oscillatory) measurements. Emulsion samples expressed a mild acid value acceptable for topical preparations during a 6-month period. Electrical conductivity of fresh samples ranged from 0.423 to 2.009 mS/cm and after a 6-month period this slightly increased to 0.663-2.890 mS/cm. All emulsion samples revealed plastic flow behavior in fresh state, with changes in flow pattern during storage time. Viscoelastic properties defined by the oscillatory rheometry results were in good correlation with parameters of rotational rheometry and degree of internal phase dispersity. High yield stress values (flow tests) and favorable low values of damping factor (oscillatory studies) both indicated good internal structuring and long-term stability of sample containing 3% m/m of polymeric emulsifier.

Abstract
Sustained-release theophylline pellets formulation for once-daily evening administration significantly improved patients compliance and adjusted serum levels profile of the drug. The patients conversion from i.v. to p.o. therapy is one of the most critical steps in the treatment of asthma according to its chronopathophysiological character. In our study we have examined safety and efficiency of this conversion in twelve hospitalised asthmatic patients who were given the new sustained-release theophylline pellets formulation for once-daily evening administration. The lung function parameters (FEV1, VC, RV, and Rt) and serum theophylline concentrations were monitored. So, the values obtained for the last day of i.v. therapy and the fifth day of p.o. therapy were compared. We found that 75% of the patients had no change or improved lung function on the conversion. Our results indicate that this conversion from i.v. to p.o. theophylline therapy is safe and could be efficacious. Also, the maximum theophylline serum levels could safely be predicted by measuring only one serum concentration in p.o. therapy with sustained-release theophylline pellets formulation for once-daily evening administration.
