A multigene phylogeny of the eristaline flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae), with emphasis on the subtribe Criorhinina

We present the first multigene phylogeny focused on Eristalinae (Diptera: Syrphidae) utilizing a dataset containing 120 flower fly species from across all four subfamilies and representing 13 out of 16 tribes. Eight genes were used in the construction of the phylogeny: mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and the nuclear genes 28S ribosomal DNA, Alanylt RNA Synthetase, the carbamoyl phosphate synthase domain of CAD, Period, RNA-binding Protein 15 (RBP–15, 5’), Casein Kinase 1 and TULP for a total of ~6.7 kB of data. Eristalinae is recovered as paraphyletic with strong support for the elevation of Cerioidini, Merodontini and Volucellini to subfamilial status. Deineches, Flukea and Malometasternum render Criorhinina paraphyletic with respect to the type genus Criorhina. A clade with Criorhina, Matsumyia and Sphecomyia is strongly supported. The generic concept of Criorhina is paraphyletic, while Sphecomyia is monophyletic and Matsumyia is monophyletic but requires expansion. Evidence supports the resurrection of Romaleosyrphus and the creation of new genera. Criorhinina (stat. rev.) is restricted to contain Criorhina, Matsumyia, Romaleosyrphus and Sphecomyia. Thirteen changes to the higher classification of Syrphidae are proposed.

Two new European long-legged hoverfly species of the Eumerusbinominatus species subgroup (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Eumerus Meigen (Diptera, Syrphidae) is one of the most speciose hoverfly genera in Europe, with several species groups recognized within. As part of the tricolor group of species, a subgroup of long-legged representatives stands out. We name it Eumerusbinominatus subgroup and provide descriptions for two new European species which belong to this subgroup: E.grallatorsp. nov. from mainland Spain and E.tenuitarsissp. nov. from Lesvos and Evros, Greece. A key for all five recognized species of the binominatus subgroup is provided.

Revision and phylogeny of the Oriental hoverfly genus Korinchia Edwards (Diptera: Syrphidae)

The oriental genus Korinchia Edwards, 1919 is revised. The phylogeny and status of the genus is discussed. It is concluded that the Pterallastes group of genera (Korinchia, Pterallastes Loew and Palumbia Rondani) is the sister group of Milesia Latreille. The subdivision of the Pterallastes group in two genera (Pterallastes and Palumbia) is rejected and Korinchia is reinstated as valid genus. Nine new species are described: K. citronella from Vietnam, K. demeijerei from Sumatra, K. flavissima from China, K. himalayensis from Nepal and China, K. iuxtacavea from Malaysia, K. kambaitica from Burma, K. lieftincki from Java, K. ocellata from Burma, and K. sanguinea from Thailand. The male of K. robinsoni Edwards and the females of K. apicalis Shiraki and K. tenax (Thompson) are described for the first time. Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for K. minor (De Meijere), K. monticola Edwards, and K. simulans (De Meijere). One new synonymy (K. aurata Hervé-Bazin = K. simulans) is proposed. A key and descriptions of all species are given.
