Abstract
Plant extract fermentation is widely employed to enhance the nutritional and pharmaceutical value of functional foods. Polygonum cuspidatum (Pc) contains flavonoids, anthraquinones, and stilbenes, imparting protective effects against inflammatory diseases, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. However, the effects of fermented Pc on skeletal muscle strength remain unexplored. In this study, we generated fermented Pc using a complex of microorganisms containing Lactobacillus spp. (McPc) and assessed its effects on muscle strength and motor function in mice. Compared to unfermented Pc water extract, elevated levels of emodin and resveratrol were noted in McPc. This was identified and quantified using UPLC-QTOF/MS and HPLC techniques. Gene expression profiling through RNA-seq and quantitative RT-PCR revealed that McPc administration upregulated the expression of genes associated with antioxidants, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation, and mitochondrial biogenesis in cultured C2C12 myotubes and the gastrocnemius muscle in mice. McPc significantly improved skeletal muscle strength, motor coordination, and traction force in mice subjected to sciatic neurectomy and high-fat diet (HFD). McPc administration exhibited more pronounced improvement of obesity, hyperglycemia, fatty liver, and hyperlipidemia in HFD mice compared to control group. These findings support the notion that emodin and resveratrol-enriched McPc may offer health benefits for addressing skeletal muscle weakness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroanatomical evidence suggests that behavioral speech-in-noise (SiN) perception and the underlying cortical structural network are altered by aging, and these aging-induced changes could be initiated during middle age. However, the mechanism behind the relationship between auditory performance and neural substrates of speech perception in middle-aged individuals remains unclear. In this study, we measured the structural volumes of selected neuroanatomical regions involved in speech and hearing processing to establish their association with speech perception ability in middle-aged adults. METHODS Sentence perception in quiet and noisy conditions was behaviorally measured in 2 different age groups: young (20-39 years old) and middle-aged (40-59-year-old) adults. Anatomical magnetic resonance images were taken to assess the gray matter volume of specific parcellated brain areas associated with speech perception. The relationships between these and behavioral auditory performance with age were determined. RESULTS The middle-aged adults showed poorer speech perception in both quiet and noisy conditions than the young adults. Neuroanatomical data revealed that the normalized gray matter volume in the left superior temporal gyrus, which is closely related to acoustic and phonological processing, is associated with behavioral SiN perception in the middle-aged group. In addition, the normalized gray matter volumes in multiple cortical areas seem to decrease with age. CONCLUSION The results indicate that SiN perception in middle-aged adults is closely related to the brain region responsible for lower-level speech processing, which involves the detection and phonemic representation of speech. Nonetheless, the higher-order cortex may also contribute to age-induced changes in auditory performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To train participants to localize sound using virtual reality (VR) technology, appropriate auditory stimuli that contain accurate spatial cues are essential. The generic head-related transfer function that grounds the programmed spatial audio in VR does not reflect individual variation in monaural spatial cues, which is critical for auditory spatial perception in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). As binaural difference cues are unavailable, auditory spatial perception is a typical problem in the SSD population and warrants intervention. This study assessed the applicability of binaurally recorded auditory stimuli in VR-based training for sound localization in SSD patients. METHODS Sixteen subjects with SSD and 38 normal-hearing (NH) controls underwent VR-based training for sound localization and were assessed 3 weeks after completing training. The VR program incorporated prerecorded auditory stimuli created individually in the SSD group and over an anthropometric model in the NH group. RESULTS Sound localization performance revealed significant improvements in both groups after training, with retained benefits lasting for an additional 3 weeks. Subjective improvements in spatial hearing were confirmed in the SSD group. CONCLUSION By examining individuals with SSD and NH, VR-based training for sound localization that used binaurally recorded stimuli, measured individually, was found to be effective and beneficial. Furthermore, VR-based training does not require sophisticated instruments or setups. These. RESULTS suggest that this technique represents a new therapeutic treatment for impaired sound localization.

Abstract
Excessive sodium/salt intake is the leading dietary risk factor for the loss of healthy life in the Chinese population. The "Healthy China 2030" Action Plan set the goal of reducing salt intake by 20% by 2030. However, salt intake in China is still at a very high level in the world, with adults reaching 11 g/d, more than twice the recommended limit of 5 g/d. The current policies and action plans of China have targeted catering workers, children, adolescents, and home chefs in salt, oil, and sugar reduction actions. However, there are still obvious deficiencies in the coordinated promotion and implementation. This study, therefore, proposed a set of comprehensive strategies (named CHRPS that is composed of communication and education, salt reduction in home cooking, salt reduction in restaurants, reducing salt content in pre-packaged food, and surveillance and evaluation) and key implementation points for further deepening the salt reduction action in China. These strategies were developed based on the main sources of dietary sodium for Chinese residents, the status of"knowledge, attitude and practice"in salt reduction, evidence of effective intervention measures, existing policies and requirements, and the salt reduction strategies of the World Health Organization and experience from some other countries. As a scientific reference, the CHRPS strategies will help the government and relevant organizations quickly implement salt reduction work and facilitate the earlier realization of China's salt reduction goal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have examined the perception of musical emotion using excerpts from familiar music that includes highly expressed emotions to classify emotional choices. However, using familiar music to study musical emotions in people with acquired hearing loss could produce ambiguous results as to whether the emotional perception is due to previous experiences or listening to the current musical stimuli. To overcome this limitation, we developed new musical stimuli to study emotional perception without the effects of episodic memory. METHODS A musician was instructed to compose five melodies with evenly distributed pitches around 1 kHz. The melodies were created to express the emotions of happy, sad, angry, tender, and neutral. To evaluate whether these melodies expressed the intended emotions, two methods were applied. First, we classified the expressed emotions of melodies with selected musical features from 60 features using genetic algorithm-based k-nearest neighbors. Second, forty-four people with normal hearing participated in an online survey regarding the emotional perception of music based on dimensional and discrete approaches to evaluate the musical stimuli set. RESULTS Twenty-four selected musical features produced classification for intended emotions with an accuracy of 76%. The results of the online survey in the normal hearing (NH) group showed that the intended emotions were selected significantly more often than the others. K-means clustering analysis revealed that melodies with arousal and valence ratings corresponded to representative quadrants of interest. Additionally, the applicability of the stimuli was tested in 4 individuals with high-frequency hearing loss. CONCLUSION By applying the individuals with NH, the musical stimuli were shown to classify emotions with high accuracy, as expressed. These results confirm that the set of musical stimuli can be used to study the perceived emotion in music, demonstrating the validity of the musical stimuli, independent of innate musical bias such as due to episodic memory. Furthermore, musical stimuli could be helpful for further studying perceived musical emotion in people with hearing loss because of the controlled pitch for each emotion.

Abstract
The most common complaint in people with single-sided deafness (SSD) is difficulty in understanding speech in a noisy environment. Moreover, the neural mechanism of speech-in-noise (SiN) perception in SSD individuals is still poorly understood. In this study, we measured the cortical activity in SSD participants during a SiN task to compare with a speech-in-quiet (SiQ) task. Dipole source analysis revealed left hemispheric dominance in both left- and right-sided SSD group. Contrary to SiN listening, this hemispheric difference was not found during SiQ listening in either group. In addition, cortical activation in the right-sided SSD individuals was independent of the location of sound whereas activation sites in the left-sided SSD group were altered by the sound location. Examining the neural-behavioral relationship revealed that N1 activation is associated with the duration of deafness and the SiN perception ability of individuals with SSD. Our findings indicate that SiN listening is processed differently in the brains of left and right SSD individuals.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, oxidase-positive, catalase-negative, motile by gliding, creamy white-pigmented bacterium, designated strain S2-8T, isolated from a sediment sample from a Wiyang pond in the Republic of Korea, was subjected to polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Growth was observed at 10-40 °C (optimum: 30 °C), pH 7-8 and 0-0.5% NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain S2-8T belonged to the family Sphingobacteriaceae in the phylum Bacteroidota and was closely related to Solitalea longa HR-AVT, Solitalea canadensis DSM 3403T and Solitalea koreensis R2A36-4T with 97.2, 96.7 and 93.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, respectively. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values for these type strains were 72.0-75.2% and 21.2-21.9 %, respectively. The major respiratory quinone is menaquinone-7. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified amino acids and four unidentified lipids. The G+C content of genomic DNA was 37.9 mol%. Based on polyphasic taxonomic analysis, it was observed that strain S2-8T is a novel species belonging to the genus Solitalea, for which the name Solitalea lacus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S2-8T (= KACC 22266T= JCM 34533T).

Abstract
A novel Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain designated MMS21-Er5T was isolated and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. MMS21- Er5T could grow at 4-34 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6-8 (optimum, pH 7) and in the presence of 0-2% NaCl (optimum, 1 %). The results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that MMS21- Er5T showed low levels of sequence similarities with other species, as the highest similarity of 97.83 % was observed with Flavobacterium tyrosinilyticum THG DN8.8T, then 97.68 % with 'Flavobacterium ginsengiterrae' DCY 55 and 97.63 % with Flavobacterium banpakuense 15F3T, which were well below the suggested cutoff for species distinction. The whole genome sequence of MMS21-Er5T consisted of a single contig of 5.63 Mbp, and the DNA G+C content was 34.06 mol%. The in-silico DNA-DNA hybridization and orthologous average nucleotide identity values were highest with Flavobacterium tyrosinilyticum KCTC 42726T (45.7 and 91.92% respectively). The predominant respiratory quinone for the strain was menaquinone-6 (MK-6), the major cellular fatty acid was iso-C15 : 0, and the diagnostic polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidyldiethanolamine. The combination of physiological and biochemical tests clearly distinguished the strain from related species of the genus Flavobacterium. On the basis of these results, strain MMS21-Er5T evidently represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium humidisoli sp. nov. is proposed (type strain=MMS21-Er5T=KCTC 92256T =LMG 32524T).

Abstract
Persons with single-sided deafness (SSD) typically complain about the impaired ability to locate sounds and to understand speech within background noise. However, the findings from previous studies suggest that paying attention to sounds could mitigate the degraded spatial and speech-in-noise perception. In the present study, we characterize the pattern of cortical activation depending on the side of deafness, and attentional modulation of neural responses to determine if it can assist better sound processing in people with SSD. For the active listening condition, adult subjects with SSD performed sound localization tasks. On the other hand, they watched movies without attending to speech stimuli during passive listening. The sensor-level global field power of N1 and source-level N1 activation were computed to compare the active- and passive-listening conditions and left- and right-sided deafness. The results show that attentional modulation differs depending on the side of deafness: active listening increased the cortical activity in individuals with left-sided deafness but not in those with right-sided deafness. At the source level, the attentional gain was more apparent in left-sided deafness in that paying attention enhanced brain activation in both hemispheres. In addition, SSD participants with larger cortical activities in the right primary auditory cortex had shorter durations of deafness. Our results indicate that the side of deafness can change top-down attentional processing in the auditory cortical pathway in SSD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) still remains one of the leading causes of infant death worldwide, especially in high-income countries. To date, however, there is no detailed information on the global health burden of SIDS. AIMS To characterize the global disease burden of SIDS and its trends from 1990 to 2019 and to compare the burden of SIDS according to the socio-demographic index (SDI). DESIGN Systematic analysis based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 data. METHODS Epidemiological data of 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were collected via various methods including civil registration and vital statistics in the original GBD study. Estimates for mortality and disease burden of SIDS were modeled. Crude mortality and mortality rates per 100 000 population were analyzed. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and DALY rates were also assessed. RESULTS In 2019, mortality rate of SIDS accounted for 20.98 [95% Uncertainty Interval, 9.15-46.16] globally, which was a 51% decrease from 1990. SIDS was most prevalent in Western sub-Saharan Africa, High-income North America and Oceania in 2019. The burden of SIDS was higher in males than females consistently from 1990 to 2019. Higher SDI and income level was associated with lower burden of SIDS; furthermore, countries with higher SDI and income had greater decreases in SIDS burden from 1990 to 2019. CONCLUSIONS The burden of SIDS has decreased drastically from 1990 to 2019. However, the improvements have occurred disproportionately between regions and SDI levels. Focused preventive efforts in under-resourced populations are needed.

Abstract
A synthetic electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic is used to interpret ECE signals from preset plasma equilibrium profiles, including magnetic field, electron density, and electron temperature. According to the simulation results, the electron temperature (Te) profile covering the harmonic overlap region can be obtained by receiving ECE signals at the high field side (HFS) of the HL-2M plasma. The third harmonic ECE at the low field side (LFS) cannot pass through the second harmonic resonance layer at the HFS unless the optical thickness (τ) of the second harmonic becomes gray (τ ≤ 2). In addition, the impact of the relativistic frequency down-shift has been evaluated and corrected. The measurable range of the HFS ECE has been calculated by scanning different parameters (electron density, temperature, and magnetic field). Higher plasma parameters allow a wider radial range of electron temperature measurements. The minimum inner measurable position can reach R = 120 cm (r/a = -0.89) when the product of core temperature (Te0) and density (ne0) is greater than 35 × 1019 keV m-3, which is extended by more than 30 cm inward compared with that of the LFS measurement. The HFS ECE will greatly improve the diagnostic ability of ECE systems on the HL-2M tokamak.

Abstract
Acute microglial activation plays an important role in neuroprotection. However, dysregulated, prolonged microgliosis exacerbates neurodegeneration through excessive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic factors. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), an inflammatory cytokine, exacerbates the detrimental microglial response. Although various anti-inflammatory drugs have been evaluated as interventions for microglia-mediated neuroinflammation, no anti-inflammatories are in clinical use for microgliosis. The present study evaluated the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of oxysterols, blood brain barrier (BBB) penetrable bioactive lipids, revealing that this intervention suppresses neuroinflammation by disrupting membrane lipid raft formation and caveolae-mediated endosomal IFN-γ signaling. We find that 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-HC) rapidly repressed IFN-γ receptor trafficking to lipid rafts in microglia by disrupting raft formation, thereby suppressing microglial inflammatory response. IFN-γ treatment upregulated expression of Cav-1, a major component of caveolae, and IFN-γ signaling was sustained through Cav-1+ signaling endosomes. 25-HC repressed IFN-γ induction of Cav-1 expression in microglia, and subsequently suppressed the chronic inflammatory response. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that 25-HC effectively regulate the inflammatory status of microglia by mediating the formation of rafts and caveolae-dependent signaling endosomes. Given the important roles of IFN-γ and microglia in the pathology of neurodegenerative brain diseases, a novel anti-inflammatory mechanism of 25-HC that is not receptor-dependent, but rather is related to the regulation of membrane rafts and caveolae, suggests a new therapeutic target for inflammatory neurodegenerations.

Abstract
Profound unilateral deafness reduces the ability to localize sounds achieved via binaural hearing. Furthermore, unilateral deafness promotes a substantial change in cortical processing to binaural stimulation, thereby leading to reorganization over the whole brain. Although distinct patterns in the hemispheric laterality depending on the side and duration of deafness have been suggested, the neurological mechanisms underlying the difference in relation to behavioral performance when detecting spatially varied cues remain unknown. To elucidate the mechanism, we compared N1/P2 auditory cortical activities and the pattern of hemispheric asymmetry of normal hearing, unilaterally deaf (UD), and simulated acute unilateral hearing loss groups while passively listening to speech sounds delivered from different locations under open free field condition. The behavioral performances of the participants concerning sound localization were measured by detecting sound sources in the azimuth plane. The results reveal a delayed reaction time in the right-sided UD (RUD) group for the sound localization task and prolonged P2 latency compared to the left-sided UD (LUD) group. Moreover, the RUD group showed adaptive cortical reorganization evidenced by increased responses in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the intact ear for individuals with better sound localization whereas left-sided unilateral deafness caused contralateral dominance in activity from the hearing ear. The brain dynamics of right-sided unilateral deafness indicate greater capability of adaptive change to compensate for impairment in spatial hearing. In addition, cortical N1 responses to spatially varied speech sounds in unilateral deaf people were inversely related to the duration of deafness in the area encompassing the right auditory cortex, indicating that early intervention would be needed to protect from maladaptation of the central auditory system following unilateral deafness.

Abstract
Background Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a common feature of Parkinson’s disease (PD), and several PD-related genes are responsible for ER dysfunction. Recent studies suggested LRRK2-G2019S, a pathogenic mutation in the PD-associated gene LRRK2, cause ER dysfunction, and could thereby contribute to the development of PD. It remains unclear, however, how mutant LRRK2 influence ER stress to control cellular outcome. In this study, we identified the mechanism by which LRRK2-G2019S accelerates ER stress and cell death in astrocytes. Methods To investigate changes in ER stress response genes, we treated LRRK2-wild type and LRRK2-G2019S astrocytes with tunicamycin, an ER stress-inducing agent, and performed gene expression profiling with microarrays. The XBP1 SUMOylation and PIAS1 ubiquitination were performed using immunoprecipitation assay. The effect of astrocyte to neuronal survival were assessed by astrocytes-neuron coculture and slice culture systems. To provide in vivo proof-of-concept of our approach, we measured ER stress response in mouse brain. Results Microarray gene expression profiling revealed that LRRK2-G2019S decreased signaling through XBP1, a key transcription factor of the ER stress response, while increasing the apoptotic ER stress response typified by PERK signaling. In LRRK2-G2019S astrocytes, the transcriptional activity of XBP1 was decreased by PIAS1-mediated SUMOylation. Intriguingly, LRRK2-GS stabilized PIAS1 by increasing the level of small heterodimer partner (SHP), a negative regulator of PIAS1 degradation, thereby promoting XBP1 SUMOylation. When SHP was depleted, XBP1 SUMOylation and cell death were reduced. In addition, we identified agents that can disrupt SHP-mediated XBP1 SUMOylation and may therefore have therapeutic activity in PD caused by the LRRK2-G2019S mutation. Conclusion Our findings reveal a novel regulatory mechanism involving XBP1 in LRRK2-G2019S mutant astrocytes, and highlight the importance of the SHP/PIAS1/XBP1 axis in PD models. These findings provide important insight into the basis of the correlation between mutant LRRK2 and pathophysiological ER stress in PD, and suggest a plausible model that explains this connection. Abstract
The mitochondrial targeting domain (MTD) of Noxa contributes to its mitochondrial localization and to apoptosis induction. As a peptide, MTD fused with octa-arginine (R8), a CPP, induces necrosis related to intracellular calcium influx and destruction of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. We searched for homologs of MTD, and compared their cell killing capability when fused with R8. Three of the seven peptides triggered cell death with similar mechanisms. The comparative analysis of peptide sequences showed that four amino acid sites of MTD are critical in regulating necrosis, suggesting the potential to generate artificial, adjustable cytotoxic peptides, which could be effective medicines for many diseases. Thus, homologs functionality could hint to the functions of their belonging proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Breslow depth is an important parameter to determine the excision margin and prognosis of melanoma. However, it is difficult to accurately determine the actual Breslow depth before surgery using the existing ocular micrometer and biopsy technique. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the use of 3D wide-field multispectral photoacoustic imaging to non-invasively measure depth and outline the boundary of melanomas for optimal surgical margin selection. METHODS Six melanoma patients were examined in vivo using the 3D multispectral photoacoustic imaging system. For five cases of melanomas (one in situ, three nodular, and one acral lentiginous type melanoma), the spectrally unmixed photoacoustic depths were calculated and compared against histopathological depths. RESULTS Spectrally unmixed photoacoustic depths and histopathological depths match well within a mean absolute error of 0.36 mm. In particular, the measured minimum and maximum depths in the in situ and nodular type of melanoma were 0.6 and 9.1 mm, respectively. In the 3D photoacoustic image of one metastatic melanoma, feeding vessels were visualized in the melanoma, suggesting the neovascularization around the tumour. CONCLUSIONS The 3D multispectral photoacoustic imaging not only provides well-measured depth and sizes of various types of melanomas, it also visualizes the metastatic type of melanoma. Obtaining accurate depth and boundary information of melanoma before surgery would play a useful role in the complete excision of melanoma during surgery.

Abstract
Techniques used for the regulation of gene expression facilitate studies of gene function and treatment of diseases via gene therapy. Many tools have been developed for the regulation of gene expression in mammalian cells. The Lac operon system induced with isopropyl β-D-1- thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) is one of the employed inducible systems. IPTG mimics the molecular structure of allolactose and has a strong affinity for the corresponding repressor. IPTG is known to rapidly penetrate into mammalian cells and exhibits low toxicity. In the present study, we developed a new inducible expression system that could regulate the expression of genes in mammalian cells using IPTG. Here we confirm that unlike other vector systems based on the Lac operon, this expression system allows regulation of gene expression with lactose in the mammalian cells upon transfection. The co-treatment with IPTG and lactose could improve the regulatory efficiency of the specific target gene expression. The regulation of gene expression with lactose has several benefits. Lactose is safe in humans as compared to other chemical substances and is easily available, making this technique very cost-effective.

Abstract
Objective: The ability to detect frequency variation is a fundamental skill necessary for speech perception. It is known that musical expertise is associated with a range of auditory perceptual skills, including discriminating frequency change, which suggests the neural encoding of spectral features can be enhanced by musical training. In this study, we measured auditory cortical responses to frequency change in musicians to examine the relationships between N1/P2 responses and behavioral performance/musical training. Methods: Behavioral and electrophysiological data were obtained from professional musicians and age-matched non-musician participants. Behavioral data included frequency discrimination detection thresholds for no threshold-equalizing noise (TEN), +5, 0, and -5 signal-to-noise ratio settings. Auditory-evoked responses were measured using a 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) system in response to frequency changes in ongoing pure tones consisting of 250 and 4,000 Hz, and the magnitudes of frequency change were 10%, 25% or 50% from the base frequencies. N1 and P2 amplitudes and latencies as well as dipole source activation in the left and right hemispheres were measured for each condition. Results: Compared to the non-musician group, behavioral thresholds in the musician group were lower for frequency discrimination in quiet conditions only. The scalp-recorded N1 amplitudes were modulated as a function of frequency change. P2 amplitudes in the musician group were larger than in the non-musician group. Dipole source analysis showed that P2 dipole activity to frequency changes was lateralized to the right hemisphere, with greater activity in the musician group regardless of the hemisphere side. Additionally, N1 amplitudes to frequency changes were positively related to behavioral thresholds for frequency discrimination while enhanced P2 amplitudes were associated with a longer duration of musical training. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that auditory cortical potentials evoked by frequency change are related to behavioral thresholds for frequency discrimination in musicians. Larger P2 amplitudes in musicians compared to non-musicians reflects musical training-induced neural plasticity.

Abstract
Objectives The ability to understand speech is highly variable in people with cochlear implants (CIs) and to date, there are no objective measures that identify the root of this discrepancy. However, behavioral measures of temporal processing such as the temporal modulation transfer function (TMTF) has previously found to be related to vowel and consonant identification in CI users. The acoustic change complex (ACC) is a cortical auditory-evoked potential response that can be elicited by a “change” in an ongoing stimulus. In this study, the ACC elicited by amplitude modulation (AM) change was related to measures of speech perception as well as the amplitude detection threshold in CI users. Methods Ten CI users (mean age: 50 years old) participated in this study. All subjects participated in behavioral tests that included both speech and amplitude modulation detection to obtain a TMTF. CI users were categorized as “good” (n = 6) or “poor” (n = 4) based on their speech-in noise score (<50%). 64-channel electroencephalographic recordings were conducted while CI users passively listened to AM change sounds that were presented in a free field setting. The AM change stimulus was white noise with four different AM rates (4, 40, 100, and 300 Hz). Results Behavioral results show that AM detection thresholds in CI users were higher compared to the normal-hearing (NH) group for all AM rates. The electrophysiological data suggest that N1 responses were significantly decreased in amplitude and their latencies were increased in CI users compared to NH controls. In addition, the N1 latencies for the poor CI performers were delayed compared to the good CI performers. The N1 latency for 40 Hz AM was correlated with various speech perception measures. Conclusion Our data suggest that the ACC to AM change provides an objective index of speech perception abilities that can be used to explain some of the variation in speech perception observed among CI users.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cochlear implant (CI) users typically report impaired ability to understand speech in noise. Speech understanding in CI users decreases with noise due to reduced temporal processing ability, and speech perceptual errors involve stop consonants distinguished by voice onset time (VOT). The current study examined the effects of noise on various speech perception tests while at the same time used cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) to quantify the change of neural processing of speech sounds caused by noise. We hypothesized that the noise effects on VOT processing can be reflected in N1/P2 measures, the neural changes relate to behavioral speech perception performances. METHODS Ten adult CI users and 15 normal-hearing (NH) people participated in this study. CAEPs were recorded from 64 scalp electrodes in both quiet and noise (signal-to-noise ratio +5 dB) and in passive and active (requiring consonant discrimination) listening. Speech stimulus was synthesized consonant-vowels with VOTs of 0 and 50 ms. N1-P2 amplitudes and latencies were analyzed as a function of listening condition. For the active condition, the P3b also was analyzed. Behavioral measures included a variety of speech perception tasks. RESULTS For good performing CI users, performance in most speech test was lower in the presence of noise masking. N1 and P2 latencies became prolonged with noise masking. The P3b amplitudes were smaller in CI groups compared to NH. The degree of P2 latency change (0 vs. 50 ms VOT) was correlated with consonant perception in noise. CONCLUSION The effects of noise masking on temporal processing can be reflected in cortical responses in CI users. N1/P2 latencies were more sensitive to noise masking than amplitude measures. Additionally, P2 responses appear to have a better relationship to speech perception in CI users compared to N1.

Abstract
Delivering biomolecules, such as antibodies, proteins, and peptides, to the cytosol is an important and challenging aspect of drug development and chemical biology. Polyarginine-a well-known cell-penetrating peptide (CPP)-is capable of exploiting its positive charge and guanidium groups to carry a fused cargo into the cytosol. However, the precise mechanism by which this occurs remains ambiguous. In the present study, we established a new method of quantitatively assessing cell penetration. The method involves inducing cell death by using a polyarginine (R8) to deliver a peptide-ie, mitochondrial targeting domain (MTD)-to the cytosol. We found that 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-di-sulfonate (DIDS)-an anion channel blocker-inhibited the ability of octa-arginine (R8)-fused MTD to penetrate cells. Other anion channel blockers did not inhibit the penetration of peptides fused with R8. Comparison of DIDS with other structurally similar chemicals revealed that the isothiocyanate group of DIDS may be primarily responsible for the inhibitory effect than its stilbene di-sulfonate backbone. These results imply that the inhibitory effect of DIDS may not be derived from the interaction between stilbene di-sulfonate and the anion channels, but from the interaction between the isothiocyanate groups and the cell membrane. Our new MTD method enables the quantitative assessment of cell penetration. Moreover, further studies on the inhibition of CPPs by DIDS may help clarify the mechanism by which penetration occurs and facilitate the design of new penetrative biomolecules.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Penile length is an important indicator of male sexual development. Scarce data were reported on penile length measurements in children comparing changes between prepuberty and puberty for the small penile issue with long-term follow-up. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of catch-up growth of the penile length of boys with a small penis in the long-term follow-up. STUDY DESIGN From April 2001 to December 2016, 27 boys who visited the outpatient clinic owing to a small penis, without any chromosomal anomalies and other genital disorder, were investigated retrospectively. Micropenis is defined as 2.5 standard deviations less than the mean stretched penile length (SPL) of age. Periodic penile length, testicular volume, hormonal levels (serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)), and bone age were measured. Pubertal development was recorded by using the Tanner scale. The effect of hormonal therapy and the factors attributable to the increment of the penile length were evaluated. RESULTS The mean age at the first visit was 9.8 years (5-12 years) and that at puberty was 12.6 years (10-16 years). The length of the penis at the initial visit was 4.0 ± 0.8 cm (2.5-6.0) and at puberty, 7.3 ± 1.8 cm (4.0-12.0). Nine patients diagnosed with micropenis no longer had a micropenis in puberty. The less the age-matched SPL, the more the increment of SPL that was observed (rho = - 0.548, P = 0.003). The mean increment of SPL in the hormonal therapy group (11 boys) and the non-hormonal therapy group (16 boys) was not statistically different (43.5 ± 22. 9% vs 41.5 ± 21.6%, respectively, P = 0.497). DISCUSSION This study explains how much the growth of a small penis catches up in puberty. From the point of view of the increment of SPL, the increment was higher in boys who belonged to the smaller penis group. Hormonal therapy does not attribute to an increase in the length after long-term follow-up. Limitations of this study were its retrospective origin with a small number of patients in a single center. CONCLUSION Catch-up growth of the small penis at puberty was accomplished in most children with a small penis before puberty. Hormonal treatment was not significantly correlated with the penile length increment in the long-term follow-up.

Abstract
Noxa is a weak apoptosis activator consisting of a BH3 domain and a mitochondrial-targeting domain (MTD). BH3 binds Mcl-1 and Bcl2A1 and inactivates their anti-apoptotic activities, while MTD delivers BH3 to mitochondria. Previously we revealed that MTD may also function as an inducer of necrosis via conjugation with octa-arginine, which induces cytosolic Ca2+ influx from mitochondria. However, the mechanism(s) underlying this process has not been elucidated yet. Here, we show that calcium influx induced by an MTD peptide fused with octa-arginine residue (R8:MTD) originates not only from mitochondria but also from the extracellular space. However, calcium spikes were not sufficient for necrosis. R8:MTD induced mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, fragmentation, and swelling. These mitochondrial events induced by MTD appeared to be necessary for necrosis induction, since DIDS, a VDAC inhibitor, inhibited the mitochondrial swelling and cell death induced by MTD. We show that R8:MTD disrupted endoplasmic reticulum (ER) structures but not peroxisomes or Golgi, indicating that R8:MTD causes necrosis by inducing ER events as well.

Abstract
ABO genotyping is a molecular diagnostic technique important for transfusion and transplantation in medicine, and human identification in forensic science. Because ABO genotyping are labor intensive and time consuming, the genotyping cannot be firstly used to resolve the serological ABO discrepancy in blood bank. For rapid one-step ABO genotyping, we developed direct, real-time, allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and melting curve analysis (DRAM assay) without DNA preparation. In DRAM assay, we used a special PCR buffer for direct PCR, a rapid RBC lysis buffer, white blood cells as template without DNA preparation, allele-specific primers for discriminating three ABO alleles (261G/del, 796C/A, and 803G/C), and melting curve analysis as a detection method. There was 100% concordance among the results of ABO genotyping by the DRAM assay, serologic typing, PCR-RFLP and PCR-direct sequencing of 96 venous blood samples. We were able to reduce the number of manual steps to three and the hands-on time to 12 min, compared to seven steps and approximately 40 min for conventional ABO genotyping using allele-specific PCR with purified DNA and agarose gel electrophoresis. We have established and validated the DRAM assay for rapid and reliable one-step ABO genotyping in a closed system. The DRAM assay with an appropriate number of allele-specific primers could help in resolving ABO discrepancies and should be valuable in clinical laboratory and blood bank.

Two pentose phosphate pathway-related proteins, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/ NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (Quinone) 1 (NQO1) regulate the expression of glucose metabolism and antioxidant genes. We evaluated the prognostic significance of NRF2, NQO1 and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) parameter and their relationship with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) histology. A total of 241 patients, who underwent surgical resection for NSCLC, were reviewed retrospectively. Preoperative 18F-FDG PET and immunohistochemical results of Nrf2 and NQO1 were evaluated. In SQCC, the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was significantly higher in NQO1-high than in NQO1-low expression (p=0.023). In adenocarcinoma, SUVmax was not correlated with NQO1 expression. Patients with a high NQO1 expression showed poor recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) than patients with a low NQO1 expression in squamous cell carcinoma (SQCC) (p=0.002 and p=0.014, respectively). NQO1 expression was not associated with clinical outcome in adenocarcinoma. Nrf2 expression was not correlated with prognosis in two types of NSCLC. High SUVmax was associated with poor RFS (p=0.03) but is not related to poor OS (p=0.569) in SQCC. In multivariate analyses, NQO1 expression and SUVmax were not independent prognostic factors in SQCC. However, in multivariate analysis combining NQO1 and SUVmax values, both low SUVmax and low NQO1 was independent prognostic factor for RFS and OS (HR= 3.790, p = 0.033 and HR= 2.961, p = 0.045, respectively). In conclusion, both low SUVmax and low NQO1 was an independent prognostic factor in SQCC alone. The sample size was small but there was a positive correlation between NQO1 expression and SUVmax in SQCC.

Abstract
Noxa, a Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3)-only protein of the Bcl-2 family, is responsive to cell stresses and triggers apoptosis by binding the prosurvival Bcl-2-like proteins Mcl1, BclXL, and Bcl2A1. Although the Noxa BH3 domain is necessary to induce apoptosis, the mitochondrial targeting domain (MTD) of Noxa functions as a pronecrotic domain, an inducer of mitochondrial fragmentation, and delivery to mitochondria. In this study, we demonstrate that the extended MTD (eMTD) peptide induces necrotic cell death by interaction with the VDAC2 protein. The eMTD peptide penetrates the cell membrane, causing cell membrane blebbing, cytosolic calcium influx, and mitochondrial swelling, fragmentation, and ROS generation. The MTD domain binds VDACs and opens the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) in a CypD-independent manner. The opening of mPTP induced by eMTD is inhibited either by down-regulation of VDAC2 or by the VDACs inhibitor DIDS. These results indicate that the MTD domain of Noxa causes mitochondrial damage by opening mPTP through VDACs, especially VDAC2, during necrotic cell death.

Abstract
Sensory plasticity, which is associated with deafness, has not been as thoroughly investigated in the adult brain as it has in the developing brain. In this study, we examined the brain reorganization induced by auditory deprivation in people with adult-onset deafness and its clinical relevance by measuring glucose metabolism before cochlear implant (CI) surgery. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) scans were performed in 37 postlingually deafened patients during the preoperative workup period, and in 39 normal-hearing (NH) controls. Behavioral CI outcomes were measured at 1 year after implantation using a phoneme identification test with auditory cueing only. In the deaf individuals, areas involved in the auditory pathway such as the inferior colliculus and bilateral superior temporal gyri were hypometabolic compared to the NH controls. The hypometabolism observed in the deaf auditory cortices gradually returned to levels similar to the controls as the duration of deafness increased. However, contrary to our previous findings in congenitally deaf children, this metabolic recovery failed to have a significant prognostic value for the recovery of the speech perception ability in adult CI patients. In a broad occipital area centered on the primary visual cortices, glucose metabolism was higher in the deaf patients than the controls, suggesting that the area had become visually hyperactive for sensory compensation immediately after the onset of deafness. In addition, a negative correlation between the metabolic activity and behavioral speech perception outcomes was observed in the visual association areas. In the medial frontal cortices, cortical metabolism in most patients decreased, but patients who had preserved metabolic activities showed better speech performance. These results suggest that the auditory cortex in people with adult-onset deafness is relatively resistant to cross-modal plasticity, and instead, individual traits in late-stage visual processing and cognitive control seem to be more reliable prognostic markers for adult-onset deafness.

Abstract
Pseudomonas tolaasii 6264 is a representative strain that causes bacterial blotch disease on the cultivated oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. Bacteriophages are able to sterilize the pathogenic P. tolaasii strains, and therefore, they can be applied in creating disease-free mushroom cultivation farms, through a method known as "phage therapy". For successful phage therapy, the characterization of phage-resistant strains is necessary, since they are frequently induced from the original pathogenic bacteria in the presence of phages. When 10 different phages were incubated with P. tolaasii 6264, their corresponding phage-resistant strains were obtained. In this study, changes in pathogenic, genetic, and biochemical characteristics as well as the acquired phage resistance of these strains were investigated. In the phylogenetic analyses, all phage-resistant strains were identical to the original parent strain based on the sequence comparison of 16S rRNA genes. When various phage-resistant strains were examined by three different methods, pitting test, white line test, and hemolytic activity, they were divided into three groups: strains showing all positive results in three tests, two positive in the first two tests, and all negative. Nevertheless, all phage-resistant strains showed that their pathogenic activities were reduced or completely lost.

Abstract
A growing number of evidences accumulated about critical metabolic role of cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in some peripheral tissues, including adipose tissue, liver, skeletal muscle and heart. To better understand the interactions of CB1, CPT1 and PPARs in these tissues, 30 diet-induced obese (DIO) C57BL/6J male mice were obtained, weight-matched and divided into two groups (15 in each group): (i) DIO/vehicle mice (D-Veh) and (ii) DIO/SR141716 mice (D-SR) treated with SR141716 (or rimonabant, a selective CB1 receptor blocker) administered orally (10 mg/kg daily). Another 15 mice fed standard diet (STD) formed the STD/vehicle group (S-Veh). At the end of 3-week treatment, mean body weight was 28.4 ± 0.5, 36.5 ± 0.8, and 30.3 ± 1.2 g for the S-Veh, D-Veh, and D-SR group, respectively (p < 0.05; D-Veh vs. D-SR). Liver weight in the D-SR group was also decreased significantly compared to the D-Veh group (p < 0.05). Serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, leptin and adiponectin in the D-SR group were ameliorated compared to the D-Veh group (p < 0.05). Both qRT-PCR and Western blot assay revealed that CB1 expression levels were efficiently blocked by SR141716 in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), skeletal muscles and liver (D-SR vs. D-Veh; p < 0.05), whereas there was no significant difference between S-Veh and D-Veh mice (p > 0.05). Simultaneously with the reduction of CB1 expression in the D-SR group, the expression levels of CPT1A isoform (protein) in the liver and heart and CPT1B isoform (protein) in the SAT, VAT, liver and skeletal muscles were significantly increased (p < 0.05; D-SR vs. D-Veh). Interestingly, the CPT1A and CPT1B expression levels in heart were detected slightly. The expression levels of PPARα in the SAT, VAT, liver and skeletal muscles and PPARγ in the SAT and skeletal muscles in the D-SR group were significantly increased compared to the D-Veh mice (p < 0.05). However, the PPARβ expression level differed from that of PPARα and PPARγ. Taken together, these data indicate that the inhibition of CB1 could ameliorate lipid metabolism via the stimulation of the CPT1A and CPT1B expression in vivo. Simultaneously, the PPARα and PPARγ expression levels significantly differed compared to that of PPARβ in obesity and lipid metabolism-related disorders under blockade of CB1. Both the mechanism of the influence of CB1 inhibition on lipid metabolism in the examined tissues and the specific mechanism of PPARα, PPARγ and PPARβ involvement in lipid exchange under these conditions remain to be further elucidated.

BACKGROUND
Risk-reducing (RR) management decreases the risk of breast cancer and BRCA related gynecologic cancer. However, there are fewer reports on the RR management in Asia compared to Western countries.The aim of this study is to identify risk reducing management patterns with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers.
METHODS
The study group consisted of all consecutive 1104 breast cancer, ovarian patients and their families of high-risk patients who underwent BRCA gene testing in National Cancer Center, Korea from 2008 to 2016. A total 220 BRCA mutations (19.9%) were detected with 125(11.3%) of BRCA1 gene and 95 (8.6%) of BRCA2 gene.
RESULTS
Out of 220 BRCA mutations carriers, they were consisted of 83 breast cancers, 10 ovarian cancers, 7 both cancers, and 120 unaffected carriers. Among them, 42 were men and 178 were women. About 90 % (198/ 220) had the familial history of breast, ovarian or both malignancies (113 in BRCA1 and 85 in BRCA2 mutation (p=0.821)).
All 42 men chose surveillance. Among 178 female BRCA mutation carriers, 98(55.1%) underwent risk reducing management including 18(10.1%) of chemoprevention, and 80(49.9%) had risk-reducing surgeries (RRSs) (1 case of risk-reducing mastectomy, 76 of risk reducing bilateral salphingo-oophorectomy (RRSO), and 3 of both) and 80 (54.9%) chose only intensive surveillance for both of breast and ovary cancer.
In affected carriers with breast cancer, 59 (71.1%) underwent RR management (1 case of risk reducing mastectomy, 53 of RRSO, 3 of both surgery, and 2 of chemoprevention). There was no risk reducing management in affected carrier with ovarian cancer patients. In 78 unaffected women carriers, 39(50.0%) women received RR management (23(29.5%) cases of RRSO and 16(20.5%) cases of chemoprevention). The rates of RRSs have increased annually since the 2013 year, (prior to 2013 vs. since 2013, RRSs 28.6% (6 cases/21 carriers) vs. 37.2% (74/199), p<0.01).
CONCLUSION
This study was conducted on the largest numbers of BRCA mutation carriers in Asian countries. RRSO is the more preferred management for affected carriers with breast cancer or unaffected carriers. The results might be explained by the severity of the illness and that RRSO was only reimbursed RR strategy from the Korean Government Insurance. Tailored genetic counseling and insurance policy may enhance overall levels of RR management.

[Analysis of curative effect of transoral radiofrequency ablation microsurgery on glottic carcinoma with anterior commissure involvement at the early stage]. Abstract
Objective: To explore the key technique and outcome of transoral radiofrequency ablation microsurgery for early stage of glottic carcinoma with anterior commissure involvement (ACI). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 patients, who were diagnosed as early stage glottic carcinoma during January 2010 to March 2016 in ENT Department. According to whether the anterior commissure was involved or not, two groups were divided. There were eleven cases with ACI (stages T1a, T1b, and T2). Twenty cases without ACI (stages Tis, T1a, and T2). All the patients received transoral radiofrequency ablation microsurgery and followed up closely.Only one case received radiotheraphy after surgery. SPSS19.0 software was used to analyze data. Results: The follow-up time was 12-67 months, and the median follow-up time was 30 months. Nine among 11 cases with ACI obtained good oncologic outcomes, initial local recurrence was identified in 2/11 cases, including 2 cases of T2. Two cases ultimately required salvage total laryngectomy. Meanwhile, initial local recurrence was identified in 2/20 cases without ACI, including 1 case of T1a and 1 case of T2. One case underwent elective neck dissection, and another one received salvage total laryngectomy.Compared to the patients without ACI, it seemed that the cases with ACI always accomponied with a little higher initial local recurrence and lower overall laryngealpreservation, but the difference had no significance (P>0.05). Conclusions: Transoral radiofrequency ablation microsurgery is an effective treatment for glottic carcinoma with ACI. Its advantages, such as more flexibility and deformability, make it more feasible to operate at the narrow space of anterior commissure assisted with laryngeal endoscopy.Good oncologic outcomes can be obtained by this technique with lower initial local recurrence as well as higher overall laryngeal preservation rate.

Abstract
Many anticancer drugs target epidermal growth factor receptors to inhibit receptor tyrosine kinases and tumor growth. Here, we show that an ErbB2-targeting pronecrotic peptide (KWSY:MTD) selectively kills tumor cells expressing ErbB2 in vitro. An antibody against ErbB2 inhibits KWSY:MTD-induced cell death. KWSY:MTD causes membrane permeability which allows propidium iodide entry into the cytosol and the release of HMGB1 into the media, indicative of necrosis. Mitochondrial swelling occurs in response to KWSY:MTD. Moreover, in vivo analysis using a mouse model shows that KWSY:MTD partially suppressed growth in tumor tissue bearing ErbB2-expressing cells, but did not have obvious toxicity in mouse liver or kidney tissue. Taken together, KWSY:MTD has potential as an ErbB2-targeting anticancer drug.

Abstract
At present, there is no objective method for diagnosing subjective sensorineural tinnitus. Recently, the acoustic change complex (ACC) has been used to evaluate neural detection of sounds. Thus, the present study aimed to examine whether the ACC can reflect cortical detection and discrimination of sounds matched with tinnitus frequencies. We hypothesized that the ACC to change stimuli matched with tinnitus frequencies would be decreased in tinnitus patients because the tinnitus interferes with the perception of acoustic changes. To test the hypothesis, 96 ears of normal-hearing (NH) tinnitus patients and controls were tested. Among the tinnitus patients, 33 ears with a tinnitus frequency of 8 kHz constituted the tinnitus group, and the remaining 63 ears with no experience of tinnitus were allocated to the control group. For the 4 kHz non-tinnitus matched frequency, a subset of tinnitus (n = 17) and NH (n = 47) subjects was tested. The acoustic stimuli were pure tones with a total duration of 500 ms consisting of a 1 kHz tone in the first 250 ms and a second tone of either 8 kHz or 4 kHz in the latter 250 ms. The normalized amplitude of the ACC (naACC) was calculated separately for the amplitude of the N1’-P2’ complex evoked by an 8 kHz or 4 kHz change stimulus and for the amplitude of the N1-P2 complex elicited by the initial 1 kHz background stimulus. Our results showed that the naACC to an 8 kHz stimulus in the tinnitus group was significantly smaller than those to 4 kHz and 8 kHz in normal controls. Additionally, in the tinnitus group, the naACC to 4 kHz was greater compared to 8 kHz. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis conducted for naACC to 8 kHz at UCL revealed a fair degree of diagnostic efficacy. Overall, our results indicated that the ACC to a change stimulus matched with the tinnitus frequency can provide an objective measure of frequency-specific tinnitus.

Abstract
Objective:To analyze the complications of adenotonsilectomy assisted with coblation in children. Method:Complications of 2 089 cases of children with adenoid and tonsil surgery assisted with coblation, in our hospital nearly 10 years, were analyzed by epidemiological methods through the method of retrospective analysis. Result:①the sex ratio of male to female was 2.08:1, average age (5.87±3.12) years old, and most of 2 089 cases 76.35% (1 595/2 089) were 3-7 years old; ②all cases underwent adenoidectomy. Different surgery methods of tonsil consisted of three groups as partial resection associated with ablation was 69.17% (1 445/2 089), ablation (channeling) alone was 22.26% (465/2 089) and total resection was 8.57% (179/208). The amount of bleeding in operation was (8.52±3.18)ml, average operation time was (30.15±8.26) minutes, the postoperative pain score was (3.77±1.61); ③The incidence of postoperative complications: postoperative bleeding (all were secondary bleeding cases) rate was 0.24% (5/2 089), recurrence rate was 0.14% (3/2 089), prevertebral lymphadenitis was 0.96% (20/2 089), the other was 0.29% (torus hyperplasia in 2 cases, dyspnea in 2 cases, 1 cases of angle of mouth burned, nasopharyngeal adhesion in 1 cases). Postoperative fever rate was 9.81% (205/2 089). Conclusion:coblation technique is a good method for the treatment of children's adenoids and tonsil diseases with high efficiency and low complications. But improving the operation procedure proficiency level and skills of operation is an important link to reduce complications.

A Gram-stain-positive strain, designated DT7-02T, was isolated from the surface-sterilized root of Oenotherabiennis (evening primrose) and subjected to taxonomic characterization. Cells of DT7-02T were slender rod-shaped, motile by means of flagella, and oxidase- and catalase-positive. The colonies were circular, pinkish-yellow, opaque, glistering and 1-2 mm in diameter. The strain was moderately thermophilic and halophilic, as growth occurred at 20-44 °C (optimum 40 °C), pH 7-10 (optimum pH 8-9) and in the presence of 0-8 % of NaCl (optimum 4 %) in tryptic soy broth. The analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain represented a member of the genus Pseudogracilibacillus of the family Bacillaceae, and the sequence similarity was 96.5 % with Pseudogracilibacillus auburnensis P-207T and 95.9 % with Pseudogracilibacillus marinus NIOT-bflm-S4T. Other related taxa were Ornithinibacillus contaminans DSM 22953T and Sinibacillus soli KCTC 33117T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 95.4 and 94.3 %, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids of DT7-02T were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 35.1 mol%, and the respiratory quinone was MK-7. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The combination of chemotaxonomic properties enabled differentiation of DT7-02T from the other two species of the genus Pseudogracilibacillus. The results of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrate that strain DT7-02T (=KCTC 33854T=JCM 31192T) merits recognition as representing a novel species of the genus Pseudogracilibacillus, for which the name Pseudogracilibacillusendophyticus sp. nov. is proposed.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the radiological characteristics of the condylar bone in patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction of temporomandibular joint using cone-beam CT (CBCT), and to further investigate the clinical factors possibly associated with the early-stage osteoarthritic changes. Methods: Two hundred and four individuals (≤30 years old) diagnosed as unilateral anterior disc displacement without reduction (disease duration≤1 year) were recruited. CBCT images of bilateral condyles were independently evaluated by two assessors and documented. Correlation between the early-stage osteoarthritic (OA) changes and gender, age, disease duration and mouth opening were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 software. Results: About sixty percent were presented with OA changes in the symptomatic joints, and most of them (47.1%) (96/204) were early-stage OA changes characterized by loss of continuity of articular cortex (Ⅰ) and/or surface erosion (Ⅱ). Logistics regression analyses indicated that disease duration (P =0.000) and mouth opening (P =0.002) were correlated significantly with early-stage OA changes. Conclusions: Disc displacement without reduction was closely related to OA occurrence. OA changes occurred in more than half of the patients after one month of the joint locked and more possibly in patients with increased mouth opening.

Abstract
A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic and rod-shape bacterium, designated BK296T, was isolated from stream water originating from a limestone cave in Samcheok, Korea. Optimal growth of strain BK296T was observed at 30 °C, pH 7.0-8.0 and without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BK296T belonged to the genus Perlucidibaca, forming a robust clade with a member of the genus, and was most closely related to Perlucidibaca piscinae (97.8 %). The average nucleotide identity value between strain BK296T and Perlucidibacapiscinae IMCC1704T was 79.8 %, and the genome-to-genome distance was 17.5 % on mean. The G+C content of the DNA of strain BK296T was 55.7 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0, C12 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone Q-8. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain BK296T (=KCTC 52162T=JCM 31377T) represents a novel species of the genus Perlucidibaca, for which the name Perlucidibaca aquatica sp. nov. is proposed.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the contribution of follow-up formula (FUF) to the nutrient intake of 7-24-month-old infants and young children. Methods: The cluster random sampling method and the convenience sampling method were used in combination, and geographic and economic factors were taken into consideration. Four areas of China (Beijing, Hebei, Guangxi, Guangdong) were selected, with 120 infants chosen from each of these areas (half of which were 7-12 months old, and half were 13-24 months old). A dietary survey was completed by a continuous 24-hour weighing method over two days. Questionnaires were completed by their caregivers which included weighing the FUF and supplementary food given to the infant, and recording the frequency of breast feeding and any supplementary nutrients. A total of 518 questionnaires were distributed, and 472 questionnaires qualified for inclusion. Nutrient intake was calculated using the China food composition, infant formula food nutrient content and infant nutrition supplement brand-label information databases, and then the nutrient intake proportion (the percentage of estimated energy requirement (EER%), recommended nutrient intake (RNI%) or adequate intake (AI%)), and the contribution rate of FUF were analyzed. Results: A total of 472 infants were investigated (227 infants aged 7-12 months old, 245 infants aged 13-24 months old). The findings revealed that the median energy intake of 7- 12-month-old and 13- 24-month-old infants were 2 530.08 kJ and 3 445.48 kJ, respectively, which accounted for 85.18% and 94.14% of EER, respectively; and the median intake of protein reached 91.50% and 105.88% of their RNI/AI, respectively. For micronutrients, the median intake of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin, vitamin E, potassium, zinc and manganese in 7- 12-month-old infants and vitamin B2, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, iron and manganese in 13-24-month-old children accounted for 82.00% and 114.29% of RNI/AI (RNI%/AI%), respectively. The intake of vitamin B6, iron and selenium in 7-12-month-old infants and vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin C, calcium and selenium in 13-24-month-old children was less than 80% RNI/AI. Furthermore, some nutrients showed higher intake levels, such as vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in 7-12-month-old infants and vitamin A and phosphorus in 13-24-month-old children, which were higher than 130% RNI/AI. In total, 40.53% (92) of infants aged 7-12 months and 52.65% (129) of children aged 13- 24 months were fed FUF as part of their diet, and its contribution rate to macronutrients was 29.69% for carbohydrates and 51.77% for fats, and to micronutrients was 2.04% for manganese and 74.24% for vitamin C. Conclusion: FUF contributes to the nutrient intake of infants and young children aged from 7-24 months old at different rates depending on the macronutrient or micronutrient analyzed.

Abstract
A novel Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, orange-pigmented bacterium, designated strain SS2-56T, was isolated from sediment of the Nakdong River in Sangju-si, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate SS2-56T belongs to the family Chitinophagaceae, and was most closely related to Lacibacter daechungensis H32-4T (96.6 % similarity) and Lacibacter cauensis NJ-8T (96.1 %). Strain SS2-56T contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as a respiratory quinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SS2-56T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 43.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence clearly indicates that strain SS2-56T represents a novel species of the genus Lacibacter, for which the name Lacibacter nakdongensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SS2-56T (=KCTC 52160T=JCM 31372T).

Abstract
Objective:To observe the therapeutic effect of photodynamic therapy(PDT) on the treatment of juvenile onset laryngeal papillomatosis. Method:Twenty-eight cases of children with laryngeal papilloma were treated,only 2 cases for the first time, and the rest were repeatedly treated outside our hospital, the average hospital surgery were more than 4 times. Under self retaining laryngoscope and microscope and endoscope assisted by semiconductor laser and plasma and cold instrument method,visible tumor resection and local affixed deposited 20% 5-aminolevulinic acid(photosensitizer) 3 hours later, with 635 nm semiconductor laser photodynamic,200-280 mW and can volume density of 80 to 120 J/cm², 20 min irradiation. PDT should be repeated after 25 days until no visible tumor.Then,2 times PDT must be done. Result:In 28 cases, 24 cases were followed up for more than 1 years(12 cases were followed up for 3 years),19 had no recurrence, the cure rate was 79.2%(19/24);5 cases recurrence, and the recurrence rate was 20.8%(5/24),among them,2 cases were abandoned because of the relapse,the other 3 cases were cure after 3 times of PDT.The main complications were adhesion of larynx. Conclusion:The preliminary effect of PDT by topical drug for the treatment of juvenile onset laryngeal papillomatosis is encouraging. The principle of PDT and the principle of the recurrence of laryngeal papilloma in children were also introduced in this paper.

Abstract
To identify the significant contribution of intermolecular hydrogen bonds of starch molecules to the film structure formation, pH of film-forming solutions was adjusted and also various salts (NaCl, CaCl2 , CaSO4 , and K2 SO4 ) were mixed into the glycerol-plasticized pea starch film. The film made from pH 7 possessed the highest tensile strength-at-break (2 times) and elastic modulus (4 to 15 times) and the lowest elongation-at-break compared with those of the films made from acid and alkali environments. The pH 7 film also has the highest film density and the lowest total soluble matter. At the level of 0.01 to 0.1 M of CaSO4 and 0.1 M of K2 SO4 in a kilogram of starch, the water solubility of the film increased, while chloride salts slightly lowered the solubility. NaCl and CaSO4 reduced water vapor permeability (WVP), while CaCl2 slightly increased WVP at 0.01 and 0.06 M concentrations, and K2 SO4 significantly increased WVP at 0.03 and 0.15 M. Presence of salts increased tensile strength (5 to 14 times than the control films) and elastic modulus (35 to 180 times) of starch film at 0.01 to 0.03 M of CaSO4 and K2 SO4 . Elongation-at-break increased significantly as salt concentration increases to an optimal level. However, when the concentration exceeded above the optimal level, the E of starch films decreased and showed no significant difference from the control film. Overall, the addition of salts modified physical and mechanical properties of pea starch films more than pH adjustment without any salt addition.

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of bacteriophages (phages) against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88 as a therapy against the ETEC infection in post-weaning pigs. Two groups of post-weaning pigs aged 35 days, eight animals per group, were challenged with 3.0 × 1010 colony forming units of ETEC K88, a third group given the vehicle. The unchallenged group and one challenged group were fed a basal nursery diet for 14 days while the remaining challenged group was fed the basal diet supplemented with 1.0 × 107 plaque forming units of the phage per kg. Average daily gain (ADG), goblet cell density and villous height:crypt depth (VH:CD) ratio in the intestine were less in the challenged group than in the unchallenged group within the animals fed the basal diet (p < 0.05); the reverse was true for rectal temperature, faecal consistency score (FCS), E. coli adhesion score (EAS) in the intestine, serum interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations and digesta pH in the stomach, caecum and colon. The ETEC infection symptom within the challenged animals was alleviated by the dietary phage supplementation (p < 0.05) in ADG, FCS, EAS in the jejunum, serum TNF-α concentration, digesta pH in the colon, goblet cell density in the ileum and colon and VH:CD ratio in the ileum. Moreover, the infection symptom tended to be alleviated (p < 0.10) by the phage supplementation in rectal temperature, EAS in the ileum and caecum, and VH:CD ratio in the duodenum and jejunum. However, EAS in the colon, digesta pH in the stomach and caecum, and goblet cell density in the jejunum did not change due to the dietary phage. Overall, results indicate that the phage therapy is effective for alleviation of acute ETEC K88 infection in post-weaning pigs.

Abstract
Objective:This study aims to explore the clinical effect of adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy assisted with ablation on children.Method:The investigation took the form of retrospective review of 2 089 cases of children applied with adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy assisted with ablation in our hospital in recent 10 years. We obtained data of these children with epidemiological methods based on analyzing the status of general information and operation selections, and then analyzing the scores of snoring and breath preoperation and postoperation.Result:①General information of 2 089 cases followed with: the ratio of male and female was 2.08∶1,the average onset age was(5.87±3.12)years old, mostly ranged from 3 to 7 years old, which consists of 76.35%(1595/2089)of the group.②Different surgery methods of tonsil consisted of three groups as: partial resection associate with ablation was 69.17%(1445/2089), ablation alone was 22.26%(465/2089) and partial resection alone was 8.57%(179/2089) of the group.③A high level scores of snoring and breath more frequently found in preoperative cases than in postoperative cases(P <0.01).There are no differentiation among the scores of above three groups(P >0.05).The postoperative effect evaluation were related to allergic rhinitis, recurrent of tonsillitis, obesity, circular occipital hyperplasia and nasopharyngeal adhesion.Conclusion:The results suggested that surgery assisted with ablation has its advantage in adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. Individual therapy for different children will improve the curative effect and relieve the pain of operation, thus is worth a wide application.
