Abstract
A novel Bacillus subtilis KD1 strain was isolated and identified from healthy broilers, and its phylogenetic classification was subsequently analyzed. To evaluate its probiotic availability, its growth characteristics and tolerance for the gut environment were evaluated in vitro. The results suggest that B. subtilis KD1 is superior in secreting neutral protease and is highly tolerant of gastric acid and bile salt. In the logarithmic growth phase, the neutral protease reached a maximum of 1,369.3 U/mL. When all live bacteria had become spores in the broth, B. subtilis KD1 was freeze dried and fed to broilers at 10(9), 5 × 10(9), and 10(10) bacilli/kg of feed. The animal trial results suggest that the addition of the new strain significantly improved intestinal flora by increasing lactobacilli and reducing Escherichia coli (P < 0.05) as compared with the control; hence, B. subtilis KD1 is a promising probiotic organism in broilers.

Abstract
The phospholipid binding activity of cardiotoxin V from Naja naja atra (CTX A5) was studied by use of Langmuir monolayers and found to exhibit pH-dependence in binding to phosphatidylcholine membrane with an apparent pKa around 6.0. Proton NMR investigation of the CTX A5 molecule in the presence of phosphatidylcholine micelles reveals a decrease in association of CTX A5 with membranes at low pH as a result of the protonation of His-4 near the membrane binding site of loop I region of CTX. The pH-dependent binding can be attributed mainly, but not solely, to the change in charge content of the CTX molecule upon His-4 protonation at the membrane/water interface. This is shown by analyzing the pH- and ionic strength dependence of binding of CTXs to phospholipid monolayers according to Gouy-Chapman theory. The protonation of the His-4 residue also results in a local conformational change in the loop I region since the chemical shifts of amide protons for the amino acid residues from Cys-3 to Thr-14 are all found to vary as a function of pH with an apparent pKa similar to that of His-4. Interestingly, the effect is relayed to other amino acid residues in the structural core of the protein such as those in C-terminal (Lys-60, Cys-61, and Asn-62) and triple-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet (Cys-22, Lys-24, Ala-25, Arg-38, and Ala-41) regions. An additional local conformational change in the molecule results around pH 5 as evidenced by circular dichroism spectroscopic studies, although this change does not affect the characteristic beta-sheet and three-finger loop structure of CTX molecule as revealed by two-dimensional NOESY 1H NMR study. The latter conformational change at acidic pH, however, completely inactivates CTX-induced aggregation/fusion activity of sphingomyelin vesicles. The results suggest that deciphering the functional sites of CTXs on the basis of structure and dynamics determined at low pH should be done with caution. Since 19 out of 44 CTX homologues with known amino acid sequence contain His-4, the effect of His-4 on the structure and function of CTX molecules is important and is discussed in terms of the diverse membrane targets of CTX subtypes. Also discussed is the pH-induced activation of snake venom proteins in the victim.

Abstract
One of key issues in studying iron based superconductors is to understand how the magnetic phase of the parent compounds evolves. Here we report the systematic investigation of paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic and tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transitions of “122” SrFe2As2 parent compound using combined high resolution synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction techniques in a cryogenically cooled high pressure diamond anvil cell. It is found that although the two transitions are coupled at 205 K at ambient pressure, they are concurrently suppressed to much lower temperatures near a quantum critical pressure of approximately 4.8 GPa where the antiferromagnetic state transforms into bulk superconducting state. Our results indicate that the lattice distortions and magnetism jointly play a critical role in inducing superconductivity in iron based compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tamoxifen sensitizes cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents. High dose tamoxifen has been tested in the treatment of patients with melanoma and other cancers. The authors conducted a Phase II study of high dose tamoxifen plus cisplatin and etoposide for patients with advanced, inoperable nonsmall cell lung carcinoma. METHODS Patients with Stage IIIB, Stage IV, or recurrent disease; good performance status; measurable lesions; and good organ function were eligible. Tamoxifen 150 mg/m2/day, divided into 4 doses, was given for 8 days. Cisplatin 60 mg/m2 was given on Day 4. Etoposide 60 mg/m2/day was given on Days 4-8. Patients were allowed to remain in the study until either intolerable toxicity was observed or disease progression occurred. RESULTS Forty patients were accrued and received a total of 191 cycles of treatment. All patients were evaluable for response and toxicity. One patient had a complete remission and 14 had a partial remission (overall response rate, 37.5%). The median survival was 47 weeks. One-year survival was 44%. Increased thrombotic episodes were noted; all were clinically manageable. CONCLUSIONS High dose tamoxifen can be administered safely in combination with cisplatin and etoposide to patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung carcinoma. Favorable response rates and survival times were obtained. The value of high dose tamoxifen in the treatment of patients with nonsmall cell lung carcinoma can be evaluated further in randomized Phase III studies.

Abstract
A population of Formosan macaques at Mt. Longevity exhibits an unusually high incidence of supernumerary nipples (polythelia: between 1-6 accessory nipples and/or areolae on 33% of adults), as well as a high rate of twinning (about 1% of births). The coexistence of these unusual traits suggests a connection, which is further supported by a tendency for mothers of twins to have accessory nipples and for twins to be born in troops with high incidence of polythelia.

Abstract
Background: The worldwide incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has increased. Efforts to reduce overtreatment follow two approaches: limiting diagnostic workup of low-risk thyroid nodules and pursuing active surveillance (AS) after diagnosis of microscopic PTC (mPTC). However, most studies on AS have been performed in countries with a relatively high proportion of overdiagnosis and thus incidental mPTC. The role of AS in a population with a restrictive diagnostic workup protocol for imaging and fine-needle aspiration remains unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the proportion and characteristics of patients with mPTC in the Netherlands and to describe the potential candidates for AS in a situation with restrictive diagnostic protocols since 2007. Methods: All operated patients with an mPTC in the Netherlands between 2005 and 2015 were identified from the Netherlands Cancer Registry database. Three groups were defined: (Group 1) mPTC with preoperative distant or lymph node metastases, (Group 2) mPTC in pathology report after thyroid surgery for another indication, and (Group 3) patients with a preoperative high suspicious thyroid nodule or proven mPTC (Bethesda 5 or 6). Only patients in Group 3 were considered potential candidates for AS. Results: A total of 1018 mPTC patients were identified. Group 1 consisted of 152 patients with preoperatively discovered metastases. Group 2 consisted of 667 patients, of whom 16 (2.4%) had lymph node metastases. There were 199 patients in Group 3, of whom 27 (13.6%) had lymph node metastases. After initial treatment in Group 3, 3.5% (7/199) of the patients had recurrence. Conclusions: Restrictive diagnostic workup strategies of patients with small thyroid nodules lead to limited patients eligible for AS and a higher incidence of lymph node metastases. We believe that there is limited additive value for AS in countries with restrictive diagnostic workup guidelines such as in the Netherlands. However, if an mPTC is encountered, AS can be offered on an individual basis.

Abstract
A new miniature panoramic diamond anvil cell (mini-pDAC) as well as a unique gas membrane-driven mechanism is developed and implemented to measure electronic, magnetic, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of materials using the nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS) and the synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS) simultaneously at high pressure (over Mbar) and low temperature (T < 10 K). The gas membrane system allows in situ pressure tuning of the mini-pDAC at low temperature. The mini-pDAC fits into a specially designed compact liquid helium flow cryostat system to achieve low temperatures, where liquid helium flows through the holder of the mini-pDAC to cool the sample more efficiently. The system has achieved sample temperatures as low as 9 K. Using the membrane, sample pressures of up to 1.4 Mbar have been generated from this mini-pDAC. The instrument has been routinely used at 3-ID, Advanced Photon Source, for NRIXS and SMS studies. The same instrument can easily be used for other X-ray techniques, such as X-ray radial diffraction, X-ray Raman scattering, X-ray emission spectroscopy, and X-ray inelastic scattering under high pressure and low temperature. In this paper, technical details of the mini-pDAC, membrane engaging mechanism, and the cryostat system are described, and some experimental results are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We explored the associations between depressive symptoms and supplemental calcium and vitamin D intake in older adults. DESIGN This was a prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS 8,527 older adults aged ≥60 years from Zhejiang Major Public Health Surveillance Program (ZPHS) without depressive symptoms at baseline survey. MEASUREMENTS Participants were divided into non-supplementation, calcium (Ca), vitamin D, and calcium plus vitamin D (CaD) groups based on their supplemental intake during the past year. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between depressive symptoms and supplemental intake. RESULTS When compared to the non-supplementation group, the Ca group exhibited a significant odds ratio (OR) of 0.731 (95% CI: 0.552-0.967, P=0.028). After adjusting for age, sex, and Ca food sources, the OR was even smaller for the CaD group (OR: 0.326; 95% CI: 0.119-0.889, P=0.029). Additionally, our results indicated that taking Ca supplements ≥4 days/week yielded a significant OR of 0.690 (95% CI: 0.492-0.968) after full adjustment. Taking CaD supplements ≥4 days/week yielded a significant OR of 0.282 (95% CI: 0.089-0.898) after adjusting for age, sex, and Ca food sources. CONCLUSIONS Supplemental intake of Ca or CaD ≥4 days/week can decrease the risk of depressive symptoms in older adults, although CaD supplements may be more effective.

Abstract
We prospectively investigated the efficacy and safety of combining weekly vinorelbine (VNB) with weekly 24-h infusion of high-dose 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) in the treatment of patients with advanced breast cancer (ABC). Vinorelbine 25 mg m−2 30-min intravenous infusion, and high-dose 5-FU 2600 mg m−2 plus LV 300 mg m−2 24-h intravenous infusion (HDFL regimen) were given on days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks. Between June 1999 and April 2003, 40 patients with histologically confirmed recurrent or metastatic breast cancer were enrolled with a median age of 49 years (range: 36–68). A total of 25 patients had recurrent ABC, and 15 patients had primary metastatic diseases. The overall response rate for the intent-to-treat group was 70.0% (95% CI: 54–84%) with eight complete responses and 20 partial responses. All 40 patients were evaluated for survival and toxicities. Among a total of 316 cycles of VNB–HDFL given (average: 7.9: range: 4–14 cycles per patient), the main toxicity was Gr3/4 leucopenia and Gr3/4 neutropenia in 57 (18.0%) and 120 (38.0%) cycles, respectively. Gr1/2 infection and Gr1/2 stomatitis were noted in five (1.6%) and 59 (18.7%) cycles, respectively. None of the patients developed Gr3/4 stomatitis or Gr3/4 infection. Gr2/3 and Gr1 hand–foot syndrome was noted in two (5.0%) and 23 (57.5%) patients, respectively. Gr1 sensory neuropathy developed in three patients. The median time to progression was 8.0 months (range: 3–25.5 months), and the median overall survival was 25.0 months with a follow-up of 5.5 to 45+ months. This VNB–HDFL regimen is a highly active yet well-tolerated first-line treatment for ABC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) refers to a functional menstrual disorder with various causes and presentations. Recovery of menstrual cyclicity is common in long-term follow-up but the affecting factors remain unknown. AIM To explore factors affecting the menstrual resumption and to evaluate the pituitary response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in FHA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty cases with FHA were recruited. All subjects were put on continuous 1 mg/day estradiol valerate orally and followed up monthly. Recovery was defined as the occurrence of at least three consecutive regular cycles. Responder referred to those who recovered within two years of therapy. Gonadotropin response to the 50 μg GnRH challenge was tested every three months. RESULTS Nineteen (63.3%) subjects recovered with a mean time to recovery of 26.8 months. Time to recovery was negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI) before and by amenorrhea. Twentyone cases had undertaken therapy for more than two years and 10 of them recovered. BMI before and by amenorrhea were negatively correlated with the recovery. Significant increase of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and LH response to GnRH were noted after recovery. CONCLUSIONS Menstrual resumption was common in FHA undertaking estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). The likelihood of recovery was affected by their BMI before and by amenorrhea but not by the weight gain during therapy. Low serum LH and attenuated LH response to GnRH were the main features of pituitary deficiency in FHA. The menstrual resumption in FHA was accompanied by the recovery of serum LH and the LH response to GnRH.

Abstract
AIMS FIP-gsi, a fungal immunomodulatory protein found in Ganoderma sinense, has antitumour, anti-allergy and immunomodulatory activities and is regulated by the fip-gsi gene. In this study, we aimed to express the fip-gsi gene from G. sinense in Coprinopsis cinerea to increase yield of FIPs-gsi. METHODS AND RESULTS A fungal expression vector pBfip-gsi containing the gpd promoter from Agaricus bisporus and the fip-gsi gene from the G. sinense was constructed and transformed into C. cinerea. PCR and Southern blotting analysis verified the successful integration of the exogenous gene fip-gsi into the genome of C. cinerea. RT-PCR and Northern blotting analysis confirmed that the fip-gsi gene was transcribed in C. cinerea. The yield of the FIP-gsi protein reached 314mg kg(-1) fresh mycelia. The molecular weight of the FIP-gsi was 13kDa, and the FIP-gsi was capable of hemagglutinating mouse red blood cells, but no such activity was observed towards human red blood cells in vitro. CONCLUSIONS The fip-gsi from G. sinense has been successfully translated in C. cinerea, and the yield of bioactive FIP-gsi protein was high. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report using the C. cinerea for the heterologous expression of FIP-gsi protein and it might supply a basis for large-scale production of the protein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) have poor overall survival, and the optimal management approach remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate our experience with multimodality (MMT) versus limited treatment (LT) for ATC. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cohort study of patients with ATC managed in a tertiary referral center was undertaken. The outcomes of MMT were compared with those of LT. The primary outcome measures were locoregional control and progression-free and overall survival. Secondary outcome measures were treatment-related complications and factors associated with improved survival. RESULTS In total, 59 patients (35 females) with a median age of 73 years (range 39-99 years) and ATC stage IVA (n = 2), IVB (n = 28), or IVC (n = 29) were included. LT was utilized in 25 patients (42%), and 34 cases had MMT. MMT patients had a longer time of locoregional control (18.5 versus 1.9 months; p < 0.001), progression-free survival (3.5 versus 1.2 months; p < 0.001), and overall survival (6.9 versus 2.0 months; p < 0.001) when compared with LT. For patients with stage IVC ATC, locoregional control (p = 0.03), progression-free survival (p < 0.001), and overall survival (p < 0.001) were superior in the MMT cohort compared with LT. MMT had more treatment-related complications than LT (p < 0.001). An Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status < 2 (HR 0.30; p = 0.001) and MMT (HR 0.35; p = 0.008) were associated with improved overall survival. CONCLUSION MMT is likely to improve locoregional control, progression-free survival, and overall survival in selected ATC patients including stage IVC tumors but comes with a greater complication risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of multifocality and bilaterality on recurrence in patients with low-risk papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is relevant when considering patients for a de-escalated treatment strategy: hemithyroidectomy instead of total thyroidectomy followed with or without radioactive iodine. This study aims to analyze contralateral tumor probability in patients treated for low-risk PTC and assess multifocality and bilaterality as possible predictors for recurrence. METHODS Patients with low-risk PTC treated with total thyroidectomy followed with or without radioactive iodine in the Netherlands between 2005 and 2015 were included in this study. Patients were identified from the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization (IKNL) and linked with the nationwide network and registry of Pathology in the Netherlands (PALGA). Contralateral tumor probability and recurrence were assessed. RESULTS Of 791 included patients, 41.8% (331 of 791) had multifocal disease, with 68.9% (228 of 331) of those patients having bilateral disease. The contralateral tumor probability after hemithyroidectomy was 24.6% (150 of 610) for patients with unifocal disease and 43.1% (78 of 181) for patients with multifocal disease. We found a higher trend of recurrence in patients with bilateral disease, regardless of multifocality: in patients with contralateral disease after precompletion diagnosed unifocal disease 7.3% (11 of 150) had recurrent disease, and patients without contralateral disease after precompletion diagnosed multifocal disease 1.9% (2 per 103) had recurrence. Cox regression analysis showed that bilaterality (hazard ratio = 3.621, 95% confidence interval = 1.548 to 8.471) was the sole statistically significant risk factor for recurrence. CONCLUSION Low recurrence rates are found in patients with either multifocal or bilateral disease with low-risk PTC. Bilaterality should be taken into account when considering these patients for de-escalated treatment strategy.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the distribution of the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Zhejiang province, and predict the incidence and the probability of SFTS outbreak. Methods: Based on the cases of SFTS from 2011-2015, software ArcGIS 10.0 was used to analyze the spatial distribution, Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi were used to analyze the spatial autocorrelation. The incidence trend was explored by trend surface analysis, and the prediction was made by Kriging interpolation. Results: The incidence of SFTS increased and the distribution expanded in Zhejiang from 2011 to 2015, the seasonal and the demographic characteristics of SFTS were similar to the previous research; there were regional clustering of the cases (P<0.001); a downward trend was observed from northeast to southwest in terms of incidence of SFTS; the second-order disjunctive Kriging interpolation based on circular model and the indicator Kriging interpolation based on exponential model had higher prediction accuracy, the probabilities of outbreak in Anji, Daishan and Tiantai were high, the prediction deviation of inland was less than that of edge area. Conclusion: The prediction of SFTS by Kriging interpolation had high accuracy, the incidence of SFTS was higher and the distribution of SFTS was larger than the results of surveillance, the risk areas for epidemic were Anji, Daishan, Ninghai,Tiantai, Sanmen and Linhai.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of testosterone (T) on inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, MCP-1) production, insulin sensitivity of adipocyte and changes of macrophage phenotypes in indirect co-culture of RAW264.7 macrophages and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Methods: 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were induced to mature in Transwell lower chamber, and then co-cultured with RAW264.7 macrophages in the upper chambers for 72 hours. Testosterone 10 μmol/L was added into indirect co-culture for 24 h. ELISA was used to testing IL-6, MCP-1 concentrations in supernatant. Western blot was used to detecting the phosphorylation of NF kappa B, ERK1/2, and theexpression of CD16/32 and CD206. Glucose transport was assessed by[3H]2-deoxy glucose uptake in adipocytes. Results: Testosterone enhanced inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, MCP-1) production in indirect co-culture of 3T3-L1 adipocytes and RAW264.7 macrophages, promoted the activation of ERK1/2 and nuclear factor kappa B p65, and inhibited glucose uptake in adipocytes. Testosterone facilitated the production of pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages. The above effects of testosterone can be completely reversed by PDTC, and can be partly reversed by PD98059 (70%-90%). Conclusion: NF kappa B and ERK1/2 could be the key proteins for testosterone to promote the production of inflammatory factors, to lead to insulin resistance, and to make macrophages differentiate to pro-inflammatory phenotypes in co-culture of RAW264.7 macrophages and 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

Abstract
High-dose therapy followed by peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) support was performed in 29 patients with primary high-risk (Group I) or chemoresponsive metastatic (Group II) breast cancer patients. Group I patients had received PBSC mobilization within 4 weeks of modified radical mastectomy. Group II patients had to achieve minimal residual disease (MRD) by induction chemotherapy before being considered eligible for PBSC mobilization and high-dose therapy. An innovative FE120C regimen (5-FU 600 mg/m2, i.v., day 1; epirubicin 120 mg/m2, i.v., day 1; cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2, i.v., day 1) plus G-CSF (300 microg/day, subcutaneous injection for 9 days, from day 4 post-FE120C) was used to mobilize PBSCs. After high-dose CTCb (cyclophosphamide 6,000 mg/m2, thiothepa 500 mg/m2, carboplatin 800 mg/m2, in 4 days), patients received PBSC infusion and daily C-CSF 300 microg subcutaneous injection. There were 19 and 16 patients enrolled into Group I and Group II, respectively. Ten of the Group II patients had achieved minimal residual disease (MRD) after induction chemotherapy. The median numbers of mobilized total CD34 + cells for Group I and Group II patients were 27.3 (9.2 to 114.1) x 10(6)/kg and 17.1 (5.9 to 69.1) x 10(6)/kg respectively. The median time to neutrophil recovery (ANC > or = 500/microL) was 8 and 9 days in Group I and II, respectively. The median time to platelet recovery (> or = 50,000/microL) was 10 and 15 days in Group I and II, respectively. No major treatment-related toxicities were noted. In Group I, 13 out of 19 patients (68.4%; 43-87%, 95% C.I.) remained recurrence-free with a median follow-up of 31 months (6 + to 55 + months). In Group II, 3 out of 10 patients (30%; 7-65%, 95% C.I.) remained progression-free at 33 +, 35 +, 39 + months from induction therapy. We suggest that the FE120C plus G-CSF is an effective and innovative regimen for PBSC mobilization in breast cancer patients, and high-dose CTCb therapy with PBSC support is a safe and well-tolerated treatment modality.

Abstract
Rats treated on Day 5 of life with testosterone propionate (TP) were tested for their ovulatory response to pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the 30th day of life with and without cardiac puncture under ketamine/xylazine anesthesia. TP without cardiac puncture in doses of 0.625, 1.25, or 2.5 microg did not inhibit ovulation, but 5.0 microg of TP inhibited ovulation in 15 of 16 rats. When cardiac puncture was performed at 1900 hr in rats not given TP, seven of eight ovulated on Day 33. However, none of the rats that received either 1.25 or 2.5 microg of TP ovulated after cardiac puncture at 1900 hr, and only one of seven given the 0.625-microg dose ovulated. Thus, the stress of bleeding greatly enhanced the inhibitory effect of otherwise ineffective doses of TP. The preovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge was delayed and diminished by neonatal TP in a dose-related manner in animals from which blood was drawn from a previously inserted catheter. When blood drawn from similarly TP-treated animals by cardiac puncture, serum levels of LH were further reduced. Progesterone, given at 1100 hr on Day 32, was capable of partially overcoming the inhibitory effects of the combined treatments on both ovulation and serum LH levels at all but the highest dose of TP tested (5.0 microg). We conclude that neonatal exposure to androgen sensitizes rats to ovulation-inhibiting factors, such as bleeding, in a manner which appears to delay as well as inhibit the preovulatory release of LH. Such early exposure to androgen, therefore, may determine the susceptibility of individuals to reproductive failure in adult life.

Abstract
We describe a new approach to suppress undesired diffraction orders in the signal area of a Fourier plane diffractive optical element (DOE). We implement this new approach for the DOE design by a two-stage iterative Fourier transform algorithm that incorporates an adaptive optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio and does not require the introduction of a dummy output area outside the field of view. A comparison among this approach and three other approaches are presented on the basis of numerical results from several sample diffraction patterns.

Abstract
The scattering loss of a high reflectance dielectric multilayer stack designed by the optimum pair method was studied theoretically and experimentally. It was found that the optimum pair designed stack has lower loss than a conventional quarterwave stack. Within the loss, in particular, the interface scattering of the optimum pair stack is smaller than the quarterwave stack.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between iodized salt intake and cognitive function in older adults. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS Individuals from the Zhejiang Major Public Health Surveillance Program (ZPHS). PARTICIPANTS Data of 10,217 participants (including 4,680 coastal residents and 5,537 inland residents) aged ≥ 60 years were analyzed. MEASUREMENTS Salt intake was evaluated using a questionnaire, and participants were stratified into the following three groups: iodized salt, non-iodized salt, and mixed salt. Cognitive function was assessed through the Mini-Mental State Examination and defined using education-specific cut-off points. Logistic regression models controlling for an extensive range of potential confounders were generated to examine the association between salt intake and cognitive function among all participants. RESULTS Data from 10,217 participants with a 16.1% prevalence of cognitive impairment were analyzed. Compared with non-iodized salt intake, consumption of iodized salt was inversely associated with cognitive impairment (odds ratio [OR], 0.410; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.351-0.480; P < 0.001) in all participants after multivariable adjustment. An association between iodized salt intake and cognitive impairment was observed in coastal (OR, 0.441; 95% CI, 0.340-0.572; P < 0.001) and inland residents (OR, 0.569; 95% CI, 0.439-0.738; P < 0.001). Despite the insufficient sample size, the results for individuals consuming mixed salt suggested an inverse association between mixed salt intake and cognitive impairment among coastal residents (OR, 0.598; 95% CI, 0.405-0.885; P = 0.010) after multivariable adjustment. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that iodized salt intake may reduce the risk of cognitive impairment in older adults living in coastal or inland areas, and the protective effect of iodized salt intake is greater in coastal areas than in inland areas.

Abstract
Objectives: Insulin resistance (IR) is a common manifestation in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Both clinical observations and animal studies have demonstrated that IR could be induced by hyperandrogenemia, which is the charac-teristic of PCOS.Nevertheless, the mechanisms of IR in PCOS are still unclear especially at the molecular level.We conduct this study to ellucidate the effects of androgen on insulin sensitivity and chronic low-grade inflammation in adult C57BL/6 female mice. Methods: Eleven adult female C57BL/6 mice aged 8 weeks weredaily injected with testosterone (1.0 mg/100 g body weight)which dissolved in sesame oil (experimental group T) for 16 weeks.Ten control mice were injected with sesame oil only (group Con). The changes of body weight and body fat content were detected.Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (IGTT) were performed at 0, 2, 3 and 16 weeks treatment, blood from tail vein was taken to detect levels of glucose.Intraperitoneal insulin tolerance tests (ITT) were performed at 16 weeks treatment.Both groups were sacrificed after16 weeks treatment, and phosphorylation of GSK3βand InsR, two molecules of insulin signaling pathway, were detected by Western blot from adipose tissue.The phosphorylation of NF-κBp65, CD16/32, and CD206 were also detected in adipose tissues.ELISA was used totest the serum IL-6 and MCP-1. Results: (1) No obvious significance of body weight as well as body fat content was detected between both experimental groups (P>0.05); (2) 2 weeks treatment with testosterone induced the in-crease of fasting blood glucose and displayed obvious significance compared with group Con (P<0.05); (3) 3 weeks treatment with testosterone induced the increase of area under the curve (AUC) of the blood glucose following IGTT and displayed significance compared with group Con (P<0.05). And more obvious significance was detected at 16 weeks treat-ment (P<0.01); (4) 16 weeks treatment with testosterone induced the increase of AUC of the blood glucose following ITT(P<0.01); (5) the serum IL-6 and MCP-1 in testosterone treat-ment was higher than that in thecontrols (P<0.05). And 16 weeks treatment with testosterone decreased phosphorylation of GSK3β and InsR in C57BL/6 adipose tissues (P<0.05), in-creased phosphorylation of NF-κBp65.Testosteroneenhanced the expression of CD206, and decreased the expression of CD16/32. Conclusions: Treatment with testosterone in adult fe-male mice can induce insulin resistance by blocking insulin signal transduction, without in-fluencing body weight and body fat content.Testosterone could activate the NF-κB to pro-mote the expression of IL-6 and MCP-1. And testosterone facilitated to promote macro-phage to M1-subtype transformation.
