Abstract
The spontaneous formation of micelles in aqueous solutions is governed by the amphipathic nature of surfactants and is practically interesting due to the regular use of micelles as membrane mimics, for the characterization of protein structure, and for drug design and delivery. We performed a systematic characterization of the finite-size effect observed in single-component dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles with the coarse-grained MARTINI model. Of multiple coarse-grained solvent models investigated using large system sizes, the nonpolarizable solvent model was found to most accurately reproduce SANS spectra of 100 mM DPC in aqueous solution. We systematically investigated the finite-size effect at constant 100 mM concentration in 23 systems of sizes 40-150 DPC, confirming the finite-size effect to manifest as an oscillation in the mean micelle aggregation number about the thermodynamic aggregation number as the system size increases. The oscillations in aggregation number mostly diminish once the system supports the formation of three micelles. Similar oscillations were observed in the estimated critical micelle concentration with a mean value of 1.10 mM, which is in agreement with experiment to 0.1 mM. The accuracy of using a multiscale simulation approach to avoid finite-size effects in the micelle size distribution and SANS spectra using MARTINI and CHARMM36 was explored using multiple long time scale 500 DPC coarse-grained simulations, which were back-mapped to CHARMM36 all-atom systems. It was found that the MARTINI model generally occupies more volume than the all-atom model, leading to the formation of micelles that are of a reasonable radius of gyration but are smaller in aggregation number. The systematic characterization of the finite-size effect and exploration of multiscale modeling presented in this work provide guidance for the accurate modeling of micelles in simulations.

Abstract
Photoreactive liposomes have been exploited as a means of developing 3D tissue constructs. Liposomes formulated using the photosensitive lipid 1,2-bis(4-(n-butyl)phenylazo-4'-phenylbutyroyl)phosphatidylcholine (Bis Azo PC), which undergoes conformational change on stimulation with long wavelength ultraviolet light, were prepared with entrapped CaCl(2) before being incorporated into a 4% alginate solution. It was shown that stimulation of the photosensitive lipid using a light emitting diode (LED) (peak emission at 385 nm, dose equivalent to 9 mJ/cm(2)) caused the release of liposome-entrapped CaCl(2), resulting in cross-linking of the alginate solution and immobilisation of bone-derived cells over a range of seeding densities, approximately 97% of which remained viable for periods of up to 14 days in culture. Entrapment volumes of a variety of liposome types were evaluated and interdigitating fusion vesicles were identified as having the highest payload (24%), however the inclusion of cholesterol as a means of shifting Bis Azo PC sensitivity into the visible light wavelengths resulted in an approximately 10-fold reduction in calcium entrapment. This application of light-sensitised liposomes offers the potential to create complex tissue engineering substrates containing cells immobilised in precise locations, in contrast with substrates onto which cells are seeded post-production.

Abstract
Alpha-modified minimum essential medium (αMEM) has been found to cross-link a 1% gellan gum solution, resulting in the formation of a self-supporting hydrogel in 1:1 and 5:1 ratios of polysaccharide: αMEM. Rheological data from temperature sweeps confirm that in addition to orders of magnitude differences in G' between 1% gellan and 1% gellan with αMEM, there is also a 20°C increase in the temperature at which the onset of gelation takes place when αMEM is present. Frequency sweeps confirm the formation of a true gel; mechanical spectra for mixtures of gellan and αMEM clearly demonstrate G' to be independent of frequency. It is possible to immobilize cells within a three-dimensional (3D) gellan matrix that remain viable for up to 21 days in culture by adding a suspension of rat bone marrow cells (rBMC) in αMEM to 1% gellan solution. This extremely simple approach to cell immobilization within 3D constructs, made possible by the fact that gellan solutions cross-link in the presence of millimolar concentrations of cations, poses a very low risk to a cell population immobilized within a gellan matrix and thus indicates the potential of gellan for use as a tissue engineering scaffold.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that fatty acid biosynthesis and adipocyte diameter and volume would be greater in s.c. and i.m. adipose tissues of calf-fed steers than in yearling-fed steers at a constant BW, due to the greater time on feed for the calf-fed steers. Conversely, we predicted that the capacity for s.c. and i.m. preadipocytes to divide, as estimated by 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA, would be greater in the less mature adipose tissues of calf-fed steers and in yearling-fed steers at 16 mo of age than in yearling-fed steers fed to 18 mo of age. Brangus steers were fed a corn-based finishing diet as calves (calf-fed; n = 9) or yearlings (n = 4) to 16 mo of age (CA yearling-fed); another group of yearlings (n = 5) was fed to a constant-BW end point of 530 kg (CW yearling-fed). Both groups of yearling-fed steers had free access to native pasture until 12 mo of age. At slaughter, the fifth to eighth thoracic rib section of the LM was removed, and fresh s.c. and i.m. adipose tissues were removed for in vitro incubations. There were no differences in the number of s.c. adipocytes/g or mean peak volumes of adipocytes across production groups (P > or = 0.14). However, s.c. adipose tissue of CA yearling-fed steers contained greater proportions of smaller adipocytes (<1,500 pL) than calffed or CW yearling-fed steers, and similar results were observed for i.m. adipose tissue. Acetate incorporation into total lipids was greater (P = 0.02) in s.c. adipose tissue of CA yearling-fed steers than in calf-fed or CW yearling-fed steers, and tended to be different (P = 0.10) across production groups in i.m. adipose tissue. The production system x cell fraction interaction was significant (P = 0.03) for s.c. adipose tissue DNA synthesis, which was greatest in adipocytes from CA yearling-fed steers, whereas there were no differences across production system in stromal vascular (SV) DNA synthesis. For i.m. adipose tissue, DNA synthesis was greatest in adipocytes and SV cells from CA yearling-fed calves, and was greater in SV cells than in adipocytes (both P = 0.01). Therefore, stage of adipose tissue development more strongly influenced fatty acid synthesis, adipocyte volume, and DNA synthesis than age at sampling, final BW, or time on the finishing diet.

Abstract
The histogenesis of sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma, a rare neoplasm with bidirectional epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation, has been a matter of controversy. To clarify its origin, we analysed the status of X-chromosome inactivation in sarcomatoid urothelial carcinomas from 10 female patients and examined losses of heterozygosity (LOH) in these specimens and in additional 20 tumours from male patients. Six polymorphic microsatellite markers where genetic alterations occur frequently in early or advanced stages of urothelial carcinomas, including D3S3050, D8S261, IFNA, D9S177, D11S569 and TP53, were investigated in the current study. The identical pattern of non-random X-chromosome inactivation in both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components was identified in five of eight informative female patients, and the remaining three informative cases showed a random, but concordant, pattern of X-chromosome inactivation. The concordant X-chromosome inactivation results in all eight informative cases support the concept of a monoclonal origin of both components of this biphasic neoplasm. Among the tumours demonstrating loss of heterozygosity, high incidences of an identical pattern of allelic loss between carcinomatous and sarcomatous components were identified in genetic alterations associated with early carcinogenesis: 86% at D8S261, 78% at D11S569, 75% at D9S177 and 57% at IFNA. In contrast, concordant LOH patterns were less frequently observed for microsatellites related to advanced carcinogenesis: only 40% at D3S3050 and 40% at TP53. The significant overlap of loss of heterozygosity supports a monoclonal cell origin and suggests that clonal divergence may occur during tumour progression and differentiation. Divergent patterns of discordant allelic loss of microsatellite markers imply that heterogeneous pathogenetic pathways may exist in the evolution of this enigmatic neoplasm.

AIMS To assess the effect of core to dentine thickness ratio on the bi-axial flexure strength and fracture mode and failure origin using bilayered ceramic specimens as an in vitro assessment for all-ceramic crowns and the connector area of fixed partial dentures (FPDs). METHODS Sets of 30 bilayered composite discs, with a core layer thickness of 1mm and with core to dentine thickness ratios of 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2, were tested in bi-axial flexure with both the reinforcing core and veneering dentine loaded in tension. Mean flexure strengths, standard deviations and associated Weibull moduli (m) were determined. Optical microscopy was employed for identification of the fracture mode and failure origin for the failure all-ceramic crowns and the connector area of FPDs. RESULTS For a core thickness of 1mm the core to dentine thickness ratio failed to influence the bi-axial flexure strength data when both the reinforcing core and veneering dentine porcelain were tested in tension. The number of fracture fragments, frequency of occurrence of specimen delaminations, Hertzian cone formations and sub-critical radial cracking in the bilayered dental ceramic composite disc-shaped specimens were dependent on the core to dentine thickness ratio and the surface loaded in tension. SIGNIFICANCE The fracture mode and failure origin in bilayered ceramics tested to represent the failure mode of all-ceramic crowns and FPDs was dependent upon the core to dentine thickness ratio employed. However, the conventional wisdom regarding bilayered ceramic specimens with core thicknesses greater than 1mm are not followed when the core thickness was reduced to 1mm since the fracture resistance was not dependent on the core to dentine thickness ratio.

Abstract
We have used two-color time-resolved spectroscopy to measure the relaxation of electron spin polarizations in a bulk semiconductor. The circularly polarized pump beam induces a polarization either by direct excitation from the valence band, or by free-carrier (Drude) absorption when tuned to an energy below the band gap. We find that the spin relaxation time, measured with picosecond time resolution by resonant induced Faraday rotation in both cases, increases in the presence of photogenerated holes. In the case of the material chosen, n-InSb, the increase was from 14 to 38 ps.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate the accuracy of fit and the reproducibility of inner crown profile for two types of high strength ceramics, IPS Empress and Procera. Procera and Empress crowns with four different morphologies were cemented to dies using zinc phosphate dental cement. Vertical and horizontal sections were made through each of the crown/die preparations and images of the vertical sections were compared for curvature reproduction by alignment using image processing. Measurements were made on horizontal sections to determine cement layer thickness. Alignment of the crowns using image analysis identified quantifiable variations in the inner surface profile compared with the outer surface of the die. The largest differences occurred from the cusp tips to the occlusal adaptation area and differences in surface profile were less pronounced for Procera than Empress crowns. Marginal gap varied independently of ceramic or internal crown shape from 7-529 microm for Procera and 26-548 microm for Empress. IPS Empress has a superior ability to reproduce the inner surface profile of the crown morphologies investigated compared with Procera. The reduced reproduction of surface profile was associated with an increased cement thickness at the occlusal contact area that may inadvertently lead to failure of the crowns functional characteristics.

Mean flexure strengths, standard deviations and associated Weibull Moduli (m) were determined. Optical microscopy was employed for identification of the fracture mode and origin for the failure all-ceramic crowns and the connector area of FPDs. RESULTS The interfacial surface roughness influenced the bi-axial flexure strength and reliability of the flexure strength data when both the reinforcing core and veneering dentine porcelain were tested in tension. The number of fracture fragments, frequency of occurrence of specimen delaminations, Hertzian cone formations and sub-critical radial cracking in the bilayered dental ceramic composite disc-shaped specimens was also dependent on the interfacial surface roughness and the surface loaded in tension. The number of fracture fragments, the frequency of occurrence of specimen delaminations, Hertzian cone formations and sub-critical radial cracking in the bilayered dental ceramic composite disc shaped specimens was also dependent on the core/dentin ratio and the surface loaded in tension. CONCLUSIONS Core:dentin thickness ratio influences the bi-axial flexure strength and fracture mode and origin in bilayered dental ceramic composite specimens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study was to assess the influence of interfacial surface roughness on the performance of bilayered ceramic composite disc-shaped specimens. METHODS Specific surface flaw distributions were introduced to a series of standard aluminous core porcelain disc specimens (12 mm diameter, 1.7 mm thickness) prior to bilayering with dentin porcelain. Mean flexure strengths, standard deviations and associated Weibull moduli (m) were determined using bi-axial flexure (ball-on-ring) for each series of 30 bilayered specimens. RESULTS The mean bi-axial fracture strengths of bilayered specimens resulted in significant differences between specimen groups with the smoothest interfacial roughness recording the highest strength and fracture strength reliability. Specimen delamination was identified in five of the bilayered group with the smoothest interfacial roughness compared with no specimen delaminations in the rougher interface groups. However, fracture occurred in the weaker dentin layer rather than along the interface between the dentin and core porcelain for specimens in these rougher interface groups. CONCLUSIONS A smoother interfacial surface roughness resulted in increased performance, namely increased strength and reliability amongst the bilayered dental ceramic composite specimens examined in the current investigation. The incidence of complete or partial delamination of the reinforcing core and aesthetic dentin was increased for these specimens since the reduced tortuosity of the interface between porcelain layers fails to restrict propagation of a crack front along the interface.

Abstract
Commercial slaughter steers (n = 329) and heifers (n = 335) were selected to vary in frame size, muscle score, and carcass fat thickness to study the effectiveness of live evaluation and ultrasound as predictors of carcass composition. Three trained personnel evaluated cattle for frame size, muscle score, fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and USDA quality and yield grade. Live and carcass real-time ultrasound measures for 12th-rib fat thickness and longissimus muscle area were taken on a subset of the cattle. At the time of slaughter, carcass ultrasound measures were taken at "chain speed." After USDA grade data were collected, one side of each carcass was fabricated into boneless primals/subprimals and trimmed to .64 cm of external fat. Simple correlation coefficients showed a moderately high positive relationship between 12th rib fat thickness and fat thickness measures obtained from live estimates (r = .70), live ultrasound (r = .81), and carcass ultrasound (r = .73). The association between estimates of longissimus muscle area and carcass longissimus muscle area were significant (P < .001) and were higher for live evaluation (r = .71) than for the ultrasonic measures (live ultrasound, r = .61; carcass ultrasound, r = .55). Three-variable regression equations, developed from the live ultrasound measures, explained 57% of the variation in percentage yield of boneless subprimals, followed by live estimates (R2 = .49) and carcass ultrasound (R2 = .31). Four-variable equations using frame size, muscle score, and selected fat thickness and weight measures explained from 43% to 66% of the variation for the percentage yield of boneless subprimals trimmed to .64 cm. Live ultrasound and(or) live estimates are viable options for assessing carcass composition before slaughter.

Abstract
Two groups of Brangus steers produced by nuclear transplantation cloning were used in parallel studies investigating the impact of calf- and yearling-feeding. The first group (n = 8) were fed as calves (CF; n = 4) or yearlings (YF; n = 4) to a constant age end point of 16 mo. The second group (n = 10) were fed as calves (CF; n = 5) or yearlings (YF; n = 5) to a constant live weight end point (530 kg). When slaughtered at the same age, CF and YF steers did not differ (P > .05) in feedlot ADG, but the CF steers were heavier and had higher dressing percentages, numeric yield grades, and quality grades (P < .05). Top loin steaks from the groups of steers did not differ (P > .05) in palatability traits. When fed to a constant live weight, the YF steers gained more rapidly (P < .05) and had lower (P < .05) numeric yield grades than did CF steers. Again CF steers had higher (P < .05) dressing percentages. There was no difference (P > .05) between the treatments in carcass quality grade or meat palatability characteristics. Thus, when finished to a constant weight end point, YF steers gained more rapidly, with no adverse effects on carcass quality grade or palatability traits; however, CF steers consistently produced higher dressing percentages, largely due to greater external fatness.

Abstract
To provide data on the perceptions and attitudes of gifted Black early adolescents toward school, achievement, and other educational variables, the responses of gifted Black students (n = 48) were compared to Black students in a regular education (n = 50) and potentially gifted program (n = 50). Results indicate that gifted Black students held significantly different attitudes and perceptions than both potentially gifted students and regular education students relative to principles of the achievement ideology, attitudes toward school, attitudes toward academically successful students, and perceptions of parental achievement orientation. Of the three groups, gifted Black students were the most achievement oriented, and perceived strong parental achievement orientations; regular education students were the least optimistic and the most affected by negative peer relations and psychological issues.

Abstract
Twenty-eight young adult boars (age 7 to 8 mo) genetically selected for four generations for high (HG) or low (LG) plasma cholesterol were studied to assess dietary and genetic effects and their interactions on cholesterol metabolism. Boars within a genetic group were paired according to their plasma cholesterol concentration at 8 wk of age and were fed for 15 wk (2.7 kg/d) one of two diets (16.5% fat and 1,156 mg of cholesterol/kg diet, HD; or 3.1% fat and 0 cholesterol diet, LD) in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Plasma total cholesterol (P < .01) and HDL-cholesterol (P < .01) concentrations were higher in boars fed HS (P < .01) and in HG boars (P < .01). There was a trend toward a diet x genotype interaction for plasma HDL-cholesterol (P < .06). Plasma insulin concentration tended to be lower in boars fed HD (P < .09) or HG boars (P < .10). There was a diet x genotype interaction for plasma glucagon (P < .04) concentration and a trend toward an interaction for insulin (P < .07). After 15 wk, all boars were killed by electrocution and exsanguination and measurements were taken. Backfat thickness was greater (P < .01) and carcass length (P < .01) and weights of the four lean cuts (P < .02) were lower in LG than in HG boars. No microscopic atherosclerotic plaques were observed in aorta or coronary arteries. Cholesterol concentration in subcutaneous fat was lower (P < .04) in LG boars, suggesting that cholesterol content of depot fat can be reduced by genetic selection in swine.

Abstract
Commercial slaughter steers (n = 329) and heifers (n = 335) were selected to vary in slaughter frame size and muscle thickness score, as well as adjusted 12th rib fat thickness. After USDA carcass grade data collection, one side of each carcass was fabricated into boneless primals/subprimals and minor tissue components. Cuts were trimmed to 2.54, 1.27, and .64 cm of external fat, except for the bottom sirloin butt, tritip, and tenderloin, which were trimmed of all fat. Four-variable regression equations were used to predict the percentage (chilled carcass weight basis) yield of boneless subprimals at different fat trim levels (.64, 1.27, and 2.54 cm) as influenced by sex class, frame size, muscle score, and adjusted 12th rib fat thickness. Carcass component values, total carcass value, carcass value per 45.36 kg of carcass weight, and live value per 45.36 kg of live weight were calculated for each phenotypic group and external fat trim level. Carcass fatness and muscle score had the most influence on live and carcass value (per 45.36 kg weight basis). Carcasses with .75 and 1.50 cm of fat at the 12th rib were more valuable as the trim level changed from 2.54 cm to .64 cm; however, for carcasses with 2.25 cm of fat at the 12th rib, value was highest at the 2.54 cm trim level. Value was maximized when leaner cattle were closely trimmed. There was no economic incentive for trimming light-muscled or excessively fat carcasses to .64 cm of external fat.

Abstract
Slaughter steers and heifers (n = 345) were selected representing the following cattle types: English steers and heifers, Exotic steers and heifers, less than 50% Bos indicus steers and heifers, greater than or equal to 50% Bos indicus steers, and Holstein steers. Thirty sides representing 30 carcasses from each cattle type were fabricated into boneless subprimals and trimmed to three fat-trim levels: 2.54, 1.27, and .64 cm. Yields of cuts to each trim level were used to calculate values for each carcass component. Live values were calculated after slaughter and fabrication costs and drop credits were considered. Values were calculated for U.S. Choice and U.S. Select grades and the weighted average value accounting for the Choice/Select mix for each cattle type. At a constant quality level, fatter cattle types were more valuable at the 2.54 cm of fat-trim level. As fat was trimmed, the leaner cattle types became more valuable and the fatter types became less valuable. Cattle types with higher percentages of Choice carcasses were more valuable at the 2.54 cm of fat-trim level, but when subprimals were trimmed to .64 cm, the lower-grading carcasses became closer in value due to cutability advantages.

Abstract
Beef retail cases in supermarkets in 12 cities across the United States were surveyed for fat thickness measurements, cut representation, package weights and counts, and case space allocation. Randomly selected retail cuts were purchased and transported to Texas A&M University, where they were dissected into separable components. Samples of ground beef were obtained for chemical analysis. Over 42% of the beef retail cuts had no external fat, and approximately 75% of all cuts were boneless. The overall mean fat thickness for all retail cuts in the beef case was .31 cm, and the overall mean fat thickness for steaks and roasts from the major primals - chuck, rib, loin, and round - was .38 cm. The average percentage of separable lean was 79.0%, separable fat was 12.3%, and bone and connective tissue was 8.7%. Retail cuts had more than twice as much separable seam fat as separable external fat. Beef steaks and roasts had 27.4% less separable fat than values from USDA Agriculture Handbook 8-13. Of the ground beef surveyed, 37% was regular, 40% was lean, and over 22% was extra lean. Retail ground beef had approximately 10% less fat than values from USDA Agriculture Handbook 8-13.
