Abstract
Functional connectivity between cortical areas may appear as correlated time behavior of neural activity. It has been suggested that merging of separate features into a single percept ("binding") is associated with coherent gamma band activity across the cortical areas involved. Therefore, it would be of utmost interest to image cortico-cortical coherence in the working human brain. The frequency specificity and transient nature of these interactions requires time-sensitive tools such as magneto- or electroencephalography (MEG/EEG). Coherence between signals of sensors covering different scalp areas is commonly taken as a measure of functional coupling. However, this approach provides vague information on the actual cortical areas involved, owing to the complex relation between the active brain areas and the sensor recordings. We propose a solution to the crucial issue of proceeding beyond the MEG sensor level to estimate coherences between cortical areas. Dynamic imaging of coherent sources (DICS) uses a spatial filter to localize coherent brain regions and provides the time courses of their activity. Reference points for the computation of neural coupling may be based on brain areas of maximum power or other physiologically meaningful information, or they may be estimated starting from sensor coherences. The performance of DICS is evaluated with simulated data and illustrated with recordings of spontaneous activity in a healthy subject and a parkinsonian patient. Methods for estimating functional connectivities between brain areas will facilitate characterization of cortical networks involved in sensory, motor, or cognitive tasks and will allow investigation of pathological connectivities in neurological disorders.

Abstract
The gene encoding the human serotonin transporter (5-HTT) has been isolated and characterized. The human 5-HTT gene is composed of 14 exons spanning approximately 31 kb. The sequence of all exons including adjacent intronic sequences and a tandem repeat DNA polymorphism (VNTR) has been determined and deposited in the EMBL/GenBank data base with the accession numbers X76753 to X76762. The characterization of 5-HTT gene will aid to advance molecular pharmacologic studies of 5-HT uptake regulation and facilitate investigations of its role in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Functional imaging studies have examined which brain regions respond to emotional stimuli, but they have not determined how stable personality traits moderate such brain activation. Two personality traits, extraversion and neuroticism, are strongly associated with emotional experience and may thus moderate brain reactivity to emotional stimuli. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to directly test whether individual differences in brain reactivity to emotional stimuli are correlated with extraversion and neuroticism in healthy women. Extraversion was correlated with brain reactivity to positive stimuli in localized brain regions, and neuroticism was correlated with brain reactivity to negative stimuli in localized brain regions. This study provides direct evidence that personality is associated with brain reactivity to emotional stimuli and identifies both common and distinct brain regions where such modulation takes place.

Abstract
The basic question of whether the human brain controls continuous movements intermittently is still under debate. Here we show that 6- to 9-Hz pulsatile velocity changes of slow finger movements are directly correlated to oscillatory activity in the motor cortex, which is sustained by cerebellar drive through thalamus and premotor cortex. Our findings suggest that coupling of 6- to 9-Hz oscillatory activity in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical loop represents the neural mechanism for the intermittent control of continuous movements.

Abstract
Filaments and fibrils that exhibit a 100-nm axial periodicity and occur in the medium and in the deposited extracellular matrix of chicken embryo and human fibroblast cultures have been tentatively identified with type VI collagen on the basis of their similar structural characteristics (Bruns, R. R., 1984, J. Ultrastruct. Res., 89:136-145). Using indirect immunoelectron microscopy and specific monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, we now report their positive identification with collagen VI and their distribution in fibroblast cultures and in tendon. Primary human foreskin fibroblast cultures, labeled with anti-type VI antibody and studied by fluorescence microscopy, showed a progressive increase in labeling and changes in distribution with time up to 8 d in culture. With immunoelectron microscopy and monoclonal antibodies to human type VI collagen followed by goat anti-mouse IgG coupled to colloidal gold, they showed in thin sections specific 100-nm periodic labeling on extracellular filaments and fibrils: one monoclonal antibody (3C4) attached to the band region and another (4B10) to the interband region of the filaments and fibrils. Rabbit antiserum to type VI collagen also localized on the band region, but the staining was less well defined. Control experiments with antibodies to fibronectin and to procollagen types I and III labeled other filaments and fibrils, but not those with a 100-nm period. Heavy metal-stained fibrils with the same periodic and structural characteristics also have been found in both adult rat tail tendon and embryonic chicken tendon subjected to prolonged incubation in culture medium or treatment with adenosine 5'-triphosphate at pH 4.6. We conclude that the 100-nm periodic filaments and fibrils represent the native aggregate form of type VI collagen. It is likely that banded fibrils of the same periodicity and appearance, reported by many observers over the years in a wide range of normal and pathological tissues, are at least in part, type VI collagen.

Abstract
Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from six subjects during isometric contraction of four different muscles. Cortical sources were located from the MEG signal which was averaged time-locked to the onset of motor unit potentials. A spatial filtering algorithm was used to estimate the source activity. Sources were found in the primary motor cortex (M1) contralateral to the contracted muscle. Significant coherence between rectified EMG and M1 activity was seen in the 20 Hz frequency range in all subjects. Interactions between the motor cortex and spinal motoneuron pool were investigated by separately studying the non-stationary phase and amplitude dynamics of M1 and EMG signals. Delays between M1 and EMG signals, computed from their phase difference, were found to be in agreement with conduction times from the primary motor cortex to the respective muscle. The time-dependent cortico-muscular phase synchronization was found to be correlated with the time course of both M1 and EMG signals. The findings demonstrate that the coupling between the primary motor cortex and motoneuron pool is at least partly due to phase synchronization of 20 Hz oscillations which varies over time. Furthermore, the consistent phase lag between M1 and EMG signals, compatible with conduction time between M1 and the respective muscle with the M1 activity preceding EMG activity, supports the conjecture that the motor cortex drives the motoneuron pool.

Abstract
Psoriasis in childhood is not uncommon. We report data collected from 223 pediatric onset and 484 adult onset psoriasis patients. In the pediatric onset psoriasis patients (POPPs), prevalence of family history was 68.2% compared to 54% in the adult onset psoriasis patients (AOPPs). Also we noticed that exacerbation of psoriasis induced by precipitating factors such as stress (50.4% in POPPs, 42. 7% in AOPPs), pharyngitis (27.9% in POPPs, 12.2% in AOPPs), and trauma (49.6% in POPPs and 38.9% in AOPPs) were more frequent in POPPs. Our data show that the frequency of spontaneous remission in POPPs was 35.3% compared to 24.3% in AOPPs. A disfiguring skin disease in childhood may have profound emotional effects. Childhood psoriasis needs special attention. To achieve a prolonged remission it is essential that children with psoriasis and their parents have an understanding of the exogenous and endogenous factors responsible for the increased morbidity of psoriasis.

Abstract
We propose that hyaluronate, a major component of extracellular matrices through which cells migrate during embryonic tissue development and in regenerative processes, is also concentrated in the environment through which neoplastic cells invade local host tissues and may facilitate this process. The hyaluronate content of invasive V2 carcinoma grown in rabbit was found to be 3-4 times greater than that of the same tumor grown in the nude mouse, in which it is noninvasive. Moreover, hyaluronate concentrations were most elevated in the connective tissue interface between the tumor mass and the neighboring host tissue in the invasive rabbit tumors. The particular site of tumor implantation in the rabbit or nude mouse did not affect the concentrations of hyaluronate in either the parenchyma or the surrounding connective tissue. Similar values were obtained for neoplasms grown in muscle, which normally contains little hyaluronate, and in subcutaneous tissue, which is relatively rich in this glycosaminoglycan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on long-term hemodialysis (HD) may be under increased oxidative stress, caused by either HD or renal failure. Plasma F2-isoprostanes have been established as an important indicator of in vivo oxidative stress. METHODS Plasma esterified F2-isoprostanes were measured in 25 HD patients and 23 controls with normal renal function, employing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with negative chemical ionization (GC-MS-NCI). C-reactive protein (CRP) was determined concurrently in patients and controls by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). alpha-Tocopherol, retinol, albumin and creatinine were also determined. RESULTS The average total esterified F2-isoprostanes in the ESRD patients was 1.62 +/- 0.73 vs. 0.27 +/- 0.10 ng/mL in controls (P < 0.001), with no overlap between patients and controls. Plasma F2-isoprostanes in diabetic ESRD patients were similar to F2-isoprostanes in patients with other causes for renal failure. In a subset of 10 of these ESRD patients evaluated eight months after the initial measurement, plasma-esterified F2-isoprostanes were not altered by an individual dialysis session. Average plasma CRP values were also higher in HD patients (P < 0.02), but some patients had CRP values that were similar to controls. In the HD patients, total plasma F2-isoprostanes and plasma CRP were correlated (r = 0.48, P = 0.015). Plasma alpha-tocopherol did not differ between patients and controls, but plasma retinol was higher in patients (3.15 +/- 1.71 micromol/L) than in controls (1.97 +/- 0.51 micromol/L, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These results are consistent with the hypothesis that oxidative stress in ESRD patients contributes to increased values of esterified plasma F2-isoprostanes, with concurrent increases in plasma CRP levels in some patients. Impaired clearance of esterified F2-isoprostanes may contribute to the elevated levels in renal failure. Plasma esterified F2-isoprostanes may be a useful indicator to evaluate effectiveness of interventions to decrease oxidative stress and associated inflammation.

Abstract
Purified hyaluronate, at a concentration as low as 1 ng/ml, blocks the formation of colonies and cartilage nodules in stationary cultures of cells, isolated by treatment with trypsin, from embryonic chick somites and limb buds. This phenomenon in vitro is correlated with sequences of hyaluronate production and hyaluronidase activity during chondrogenesis in embryonic and regenerating tissues in vivo. An hypothesis is proposed in which hyaluronate acts as a regulator or inhibitor of mesenchymal cell aggregation in embryogenesis, its synthesis and removal being part of the mechanism of timing of migration, aggregation, and subsequent differentiation.

Abstract
MEG correlates of the recognition of facial expressions of emotion were studied in four healthy volunteers. Subjects performed a facial emotion recognition task and a control task involving recognition of complex objects including faces. Facial emotion recognition activated inferior frontal cortex, amygdala and different parts of temporal cortex in a relatively consistent time sequence. The characteristics of these activations were clearly different from those recorded during the control task. Most interesting was the fact that faces evoked different MEG responses as a function of task demands, i.e., the activations recorded during facial emotion recognition were different from those recorded during simple face recognition in the control task. These findings support the assumption that MEG is able to specifically identify the activation pattern of the brain when recognition of the emotional expression of a face is performed.

Abstract
This is a survey of the prevalence of weight reducing and weight gaining in high school children. Our sample of 1,373 high school girls and boys was geographically, racially, and economically diverse. On the day of the survey, 63% of the girls and 16.2% of the boys reported being on weight reducing regimens; 9.1% of the girls and 28.4% of the boys were trying to gain weight. Most female reducers and male gainers were already normal weight. Compared to other racial groups, whites and Hispanics were more likely to be reducing, whereas blacks were more likely to be gaining. Exercise and moderate caloric reduction were most popular for weight reducing, and a small but significant number were regularly using fasting, vomiting, laxatives, and appetite suppressants. The direction of weight modification for girls and boys conformed to stereotyped physical ideals. The rate of weight reducing in female high school adolescents has increased significantly since similar surveys of American youths 20 years ago.
