Abstract
Plant species vary under different climatic conditions and the distribution of pollen in the air. Trends in pollen distribution can be used to assess the impact of climate change on public health. In 2015, the Mobile Airways Sentinel networK for rhinitis and asthma (MASK-air®) was launched as a project of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-on-AHA, DG Santé and DG CONNECT). This project aimed to develop a warning system to inform patients about the onset of the pollen season, namely, the System for Integrated modeLling of Atmospheric coMposition (SILAM). A global-to-meso-scale dispersion model was developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). It provides quantitative information on atmospheric pollution of anthropogenic and natural origins, particularly on allergenic pollens. Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma and Rhinitis (POLLAR, EIT Health) has combined MASK-air clinical data with SILAM forecasts. A new Horizon Europe grant (Climate Action to Advance HeaLthY Societies in Europe [CATALYSE]; grant agreement number 101057131), which came into force in September 2022, aims to improve our understanding of climate change and help us find ways to counteractit. One objective of this project is to develop early warning systems and predictive models to improve the effectiveness of strategies for adapting to climate change. One of the warning systems is focused on allergic rhinitis (CATALYSE Task 3.2), with a collaboration between the FMI (Finland), Porto University (Portugal), MASK-air SAS (France), ISGlobal (Spain), Hertie School (Germany), and the University of Zurich (Switzerland). It is to be implemented with the support of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. This paper reports the planning of CATALYSE Task 3.2.

Abstract
While most producers in recent decades have relied on commercial yeasts (ADY) as their primary choice given their reliability and reproducibility, the fear of standardising the taste and properties of wine has led to the employment of alternative strategies that involve autochthonous yeasts such as pied de cuve (PdC) and spontaneous fermentation (SF). However, the impact of different fermentation strategies on wine has been a subject of debate and speculation. Consequently, this study describes, for the first time, the differences between the three kinds of fermentation at the metabolomic, chemical, and sensory levels in two wines: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The results showed how the yeast chosen significantly impacted the molecular composition of the wines, as revealed by metabolomic analysis that identified biomarkers with varying chemical compositions according to the fermentation modality. Notably, higher numbers of lipid markers were found for SF and PdC than ADY, which contained more peptides. Key molecules from the metabolic amino acid pathway, which are addressed in this article, showed evidence of such variations. In addition, the analysis of volatile aromatic compounds revealed an increase in groups of compounds specific to each fermentation. The sensorial analysis of Chardonnay wine showed a more qualitative sensory outcome (Higher fruit intensity) for ADY and SF compared to PdC. Our finding challenges the common speculation among wine producers that autochthonous yeast fermentations may offer greater complexity and uniqueness in comparison to commercial yeast fermentations.

Abstract
The reduction of chemical inputs in wine has become one of the main challenges of the wine industry. One of the alternatives to sulfites developed is bioprotection, which consists in using non-Saccharomyces strains to prevent microbial deviation. However, the impact of substituting sulfites by bioprotection on the final wine remains poorly studied. For the first time, we characterized this impact on Chardonnay wine through an integrative approach. Interestingly, physico-chemical analysis did not reveal any difference between both treatments regarding classical oenological parameters. Nevertheless, bioprotection did not seem to provide as much protection against oxidation as sulfites, as observed through phenolic compound analysis. At a deeper level, untargeted metabolomic analyses revealed substantial changes in wine composition according to must treatment. In particular, the specific footprint of each treatment revealed an impact on nitrogen-containing compounds. This observation could be related to modifications in S. cerevisiae metabolism, in particular amino acid biosynthesis and tryptophan metabolism pathways. Thus, the type of must treatment seemed to impact metabolic fluxes of yeast differently, leading to the production of different compounds. For example, we observed glutathione and melatonin, compounds with antioxidant properties, which were enhanced with sulfites, but not with bioprotection. However, despite substantial modifications in wines regarding their chemical composition, the change in must treatment did not seem to impact the sensory profile of wine. This integrative approach has provided relevant new insights on the impact of sulfite substitution by bioprotection on Chardonnay wines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural wine (NW) lacks an official or agreed definition, but it can be generally described as a wine produced with organic or biodynamic grapes with minimal intervention in the cellar, and with minimal or no use of oenological additives. The present study aimed to test the hypotheses that self-defined NWs differ from conventional wines (CW) in their chemical composition and main sensory characteristics. The levels of conventional oenological parameters, turbidity, biogenic amines, ochratoxin A, ethyl carbamate, sulphites, chlorides, some metals, major, trace and Strecker aldehyde volatile compounds were determined in 28 wines, including natural and conventional Spanish commercial white wines. Wines were also sensory described following a labelled free sorting task. RESULTS NWs presented higher pH, volatile acidity (VA) and turbidity values, and a more intense yellow colour, whereas they have a lower malic acid content compared to theor conventional counterparts. NWs presented lower levels of total sulphur dioxide but significantly higher levels of biogenic amine putrescine, although both compounds are within the legal limits in all cases. None of the dimensions of the similarity space discriminated NWs from CWs. However, 70% of the NWs were grouped on the basis of various aromatic defects related to their higher content in 4-ethylphenols and VA. The remaining 30% were not differentiated from their conventional counterparts. CONCLUSION It could be confirmed that NW can be globally differentiated from CW with respect to to their chemical and their sensory profiles, whereas the content in toxicants was not significantly different, with the exception of total sulphur dioxide and putrescine levels. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Yeast co-inoculations in winemaking are often studied in the framework of modulating the aromatic profiles of wines. Our study aimed to investigate the impact of three cocultures and corresponding pure cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the chemical composition and the sensory profile of Chardonnay wine. Coculture makes it possible to obtain completely new aromatic expressions that do not exist in the original pure cultures attributed to yeast interactions. Esters, fatty acids and phenol families were identified as affected. The sensory profiles and metabolome of the cocultures, corresponding pure cultures and associated wine blends from both pure cultures were found to be different. The coculture did not turn out to be the addition of the two pure culture wines, indicating the impact of interaction. High resolution mass spectrometry revealed thousands of cocultures biomarkers. The metabolic pathways involved in these wine composition changes were highlighted, most of them belonging to nitrogen metabolism.

Abstract
Multivarietal wines aged in barrels made from the resinous heartwood of the Canary Pine (Vinos de Tea) in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) were analysed, together with a control sample and a Greek Retsina wine. The concentrations of various families of varietal and fermentative volatile compounds were determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Results showed the significant presence of the terpene family, especially terpinen-4-ol and α-terpineol (probably derived from contact with the resinous wood of the barrels), regardless of grape variety. Samples taken from commercial wineries presented significantly lower concentrations of α-terpineol than samples from traditional artisan producers. The principal component analysis clearly differentiated both from the Retsina. It also revealed a correlation between the length of time that wine aged in Canary pine barrels and a sharp increase in α-terpineol, which can be considered a marker of the typicity of these unique traditional wines on the verge of disappearance.

Abstract
Alcoholic fermentation is known to be a key stage in the winemaking process that directly impacts the composition and quality of the final product. Twelve wines were obtained from fermentations of Chardonnay must made with twelve different commercial wine yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In our study, FT-ICR-MS, GC-MS, and sensory analysis were combined with multivariate analysis. Ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (uHRMS) was able to highlight hundreds of metabolites specific to each strain from the same species, although they are characterized by the same technological performances. Furthermore, the significant involvement of nitrogen metabolism in this differentiation was considered. The modulation of primary metabolism was also noted at the volatilome and sensory levels. Sensory analysis allowed us to classify wines into three groups based on descriptors associated with white wine. Thirty-five of the volatile compounds analyzed, including esters, medium-chain fatty acids, superior alcohols, and terpenes discriminate and give details about differences between wines. Therefore, phenotypic differences within the same species revealed metabolic differences that resulted in the diversity of the volatile fraction that participates in the palette of the sensory pattern. This original combination of metabolomics with the volatilome and sensory approaches provides an integrative vision of the characteristics of a given strain. Metabolomics shine the new light on intraspecific discrimination in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae species.

LW blastocyst score is comparable to the scores of other classification methods. This AI model showed high sensitivity and a comparable specificity for CP.
What is known already
The morphology grading is the most widely used method for the selection and classification of the embryos in clinical practice.However,this evaluation entails intervariability and intravariability decision among the embryologists.Recently, research has been focused on new embryo selection systems based on computer-assisted evaluation such as time-lapse with complex algorithms that allow the recognition of objective parameters of the embryo morphology.The implementation of these technologies requires substantial investments that are not available for all clinics.LW is a new embryo selection method based on AI,where specific hardware is not needed,as it is based on single blastocyst images taken with a routine microscope.
Study design, size, duration
Between 2017–2020, a total of 513 Day–5 blastocysts, after ICSI, comming from egg donation treatment were included in this retrospective-multicentre study.Day–5 embryos were evaluated with 3 classification methods:Gardner’s blastocyst grade (GB), the computer derived-output Eeva (EV) and LW AI-supported system. The good quality blastocysts were first evaluated using the GB and EV scores and subsequently compared with the LW scores.The sensitivity and specificity of LW was assessed to validate this system as a clinical pregnancy predictor.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
A total of 513 Day–5 blastocysts, from 134 oocyte donation cycles, were evaluated first by GB score: expansion (1–6), inner cell mass and throphoectoderm (A-C).EV analyses the cell division timing P2 (2cells stage duration) and P3 (3cells stage duration) differentiating three categories:High,Medium and Low(VerMilyea et al.,2014).LW scores ranked 1–10 from a single Day–5 blastocyst HR Image performed on inverted microscope,with a threshold >5 for defining a viable blastocyst.T-test and ROC-curves were used for statistical analysis.
Main results and the role of chance
The average of LW score obtained from GB higher blastocyst expansion score (≥4) was 7.48±0.09, while the average of LW score obtained from GB lower blastocyst expansion score (<4) was 4.69±0.3 (P < 0.001). The average of LW score yielded from GB good morphology of Inner Cell Mass and trophoectoderm (AA,AB,BA) was 7.98±0.1 while the average of LW score obtained from GB lower quality blastocyst score (BB,BC,CB,CA,AC) was 6.36±0.156 (P < 0.001).The average of LW score resulted from EV High blastocysts was 7.42±0.17, while the average of this obtained from EV low score was 6.43±0.3 (P = 0.009).A correlation between EV and LW score could be assesed, except for the blastocyst that are considered Medium score from EV.
Therefore, a strong correlation between GB and LW system, as well GB+EV and LW, was found and an equivalent usability of the LW tool could be confirmed.
The analyse of LW score for transferred embryos (N = 156), using ROC curve, showed a high sensitivity (0,928) but a low specificity (0,154) with a threshold of 5. Regarding our data, ROC curve shows that a threshold of 8,46 could enhance the prediction of CPR because in this point the specifity value is higher than 0.5.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The LW score validation compared to GB and EV methodology was carried out on a small number of embryos.Additionally,not all embryos had been transferred at the time of the analysis.Thus to enhance the accuracy of these data and the specificity of the clinical prediction, a higher sample size is needed.
Wider implications of the findings: Blastocyst selection looks equivalent between all systems,but the LW tool is more objective and faster, saving time and costs significantly, without needing substantial hardware investments.
Additionally,the LW-system shows almost the highest sensibility and may also improve the specificity by self-learning feeding the AI-system, thus tailoring predictions to each laboratory unique environment.

Abstract
Culture is an important factor that influences how marketing interacts with food choice. This study aims at exploring the effect of consumers' Country of Origin (COO) on wine representations and perception using Chenin blanc as a model. The first objective was to evaluate the role of origin in the construction of the representation. We used the theoretical framework of social representation to compare South African (SA) and French consumers' representations via a word association task. The results indicated that SA representations are dominated by consumers' experience of the wine (sensory and emotional dimensions), whereas French representations are dominated by the wine itself, in particular its origin and mode of consumption. The second objective was to evaluate the effect of origin on wine categorization in two conditions: with and without information concerning the two geographical origins of the samples. Results showed that providing information on the origin of the wines affected French participants more than SA participants. In both conditions, the groups of wines formed in the sorting tasks by SA participants were based on sensory descriptors and appeared not to be impacted by the information on origin. In contrast, providing information on the origin of the wines to French participants led to an increased use of the words "Loire", "South Africa" and "familiar" suggesting a different sorting strategy more deliberately based on the origin of the wines. Our findings have important implications for the marketing and export activities within the wine industry.

Abstract
The Swedish wine industry has exponentially grown in the last decade. However, Swedish wines remain largely unknown internationally. In this study, the typicality and sensory space of a set of twelve wines, including five Swedish Solaris wines, was evaluated blind by Swedish wine experts. The aim of the work was to evaluate whether the Swedish wine experts have a common concept of what a typical Solaris wines should smell and taste like or not and, also, to bring out more information about the sensory space and chemical composition of Solaris wines. The results showed a lack of agreement among the wine experts regarding the typicality of Solaris wines. This, together with the results from the sensory evaluation, could suggest the possibility of different wine styles for Solaris wines. From a chemical perspective, the global volatile profile showed a larger variability between individual wines than between Solaris and non-Solaris. However, 4MMP, ethyl propionate, ethyl 2-Methyl propanoate, and diethyl succinate were significantly higher in Solaris wines. Concerning non-volatile compounds, the results showed a significant discrimination between Solaris and non-Solaris wines, the former being characterized by higher ethanol %, Mg, succinic acid, tartaric acid, and sucrose levels.

Abstract
In wine, one method of limiting the addition of sulphites, a harmful and allergenic agent, is bio-protection. This practice consists of the early addition of microorganisms on grape must before fermentation. Non-Saccharomyces yeasts have been proposed as an interesting alternative to sulphite addition. However, scientific data proving the effectiveness of bio-protection remains sparse. This study provides the first analysis of the chemical and microbiological effects of a Metschnikowia pulcherrima strain inoculated at the beginning of the red winemaking process in three wineries as an alternative to sulphiting. Like sulphiting, bio-protection effectively limited the growth of spoilage microbiota and had no influence on the phenolic compounds protecting musts and wine from oxidation. The bio-protection had no effect on the volatile compounds and the sensory differences were dependent on the experimental sites. However, a non-targeted metabolomic analysis by FTICR-MS highlighted a bio-protection signature.

Abstract
This paper is a comprehensive study regarding the role of glutathione as a natural antioxidant on white wines aging potential. It includes sensory and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) metabolomics of aged chardonnay wines from 2008 to 2009 vintages, made after glutathione spiking at alcoholic fermentation or bottling. The closure effect was also considered. The sensory analysis revealed a clear vintage, closure and glutathione effect on wines oxidative character after several years of bottle aging. Spearman rank correlation was applied to link the sensory analysis and the exact mass information from FT-ICR-MS. FTICR-MS along with multivariate statistical analyses put in evidence that glutathione efficiency against wines sensory oxidative stability is related to wines antioxidant metabolome consisting of N- and S- containing compounds like amino acids, aromatic compounds and peptides. The chemical composition and origin of wines antioxidant metabolome suggests that its management since the very beginning of the vinification process is a key factor to estimate wines aging potential.

Abstract
Chardonnay wines from Burgundy, obtained from musts with three levels of clarification (Low, Medium and High) during two consecutive vintages (2009 and 2010) and for two kinds of closures (screw caps and synthetic coextruded closures) were analyzed chemically and sensorially. Three bottles per turbidity level were opened in 2015 in order to assess the intensity of the reductive and/or oxidative aromas (REDOX sensory scores) by a trained sensory panel. The chemical analyses consisted in polyphenols and colloids quantification, followed by a proteomic characterization. For the two vintages, the REDOX sensory scores appeared to be driven both by the type of closure and to a lesser extent by the level of must clarification. Vintages and must racking prefermentative operations were also distinguished by chemical analyses. All white wines from the lowest must turbidity had the lowest REDOX sensory scores. Such wines exhibited lower concentrations in tyrosol and grape reaction product and higher concentrations in colloids with relatively low molecular weights. Among these macromolecules, grape proteins were also quantified, two of them exhibiting concentrations in bottled wines, which were statistically correlated to oxidative evolution in white wines.

Abstract
The goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of vineyard position on the minerality of wines and to establish relationships between minerality scores, sensory descriptors and chemical composition. Sensory analyses included minerality rating and free description performed by wine professionals under two conditions: orthonasal olfaction alone and global tasting. Chemical characterization included analysis of major and minor volatile compounds, volatile sulphur compounds, mercaptans, metals, anions and cations. Results showed a significant effect of the river bank on wine minerality scores only in the orthonasal olfaction condition, samples from the left being more mineral than those from the right bank. Methanethiol, involved in shellfish aroma, was significantly higher in wines from the left (more mineral) than from the right bank. Contrary, copper levels, related to lower levels of free MeSH, and norisoprenoids, responsible for white fruit and floral aromas, were higher in wines from the right bank (less mineral).

Abstract
The variability of the atmospheric concentration of the 7Be and 210Pb radionuclides is strongly linked to the origin of air masses, the strength of their sources and the processes of wet and dry deposition. It has been shown how these processes and their variability are strongly affected by climate change. Thus, a deeper knowledge of the relationship between the atmospheric radionuclides variability measured close to the ground and these atmospheric processes could help in the analysis of climate scenarios. In the present study, we analyze the atmospheric variability of a 14-year time series of 7Be and 210Pb in a Mediterranean coastal city using a synergy of different indicators and tools such as: the local meteorological conditions, global and regional climate indexes and a lagrangian atmospheric transport model. We particularly focus on the relationships between the main pathways of air masses and sun spots occurrence, the variability of the local relative humidity and temperature conditions, and the main modes of regional climate variability, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The variability of the observed atmospheric concentrations of both 7Be and 210Pb radionuclides was found to be mainly positively associated to the local climate conditions of temperature and to the pathways of air masses arriving at the station. Measured radionuclide concentrations significantly increase when air masses travel at low tropospheric levels from central Europe and the western part of the Iberian Peninsula, while low concentrations are associated with westerly air masses. We found a significant negative correlation between the WeMO index and the atmospheric variability of both radionuclides and no significant association was observed for the NAO index.

Abstract
The effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) on the odor properties of three wine models-WM- (young white, young red and oaked red wines) was studied. Wine models were built by mixing a pool of common wine volatile and non-volatile compounds and further spiked with eight different combinations of the three sulfur compounds present at two levels (level 0: 0μgL-1 and level 1: 40μgL-1 of H2S, 12μgL-1 of MeSH; 55μgL-1 of DMS). For each wine matrix eight WMs were produced and further submitted to sensory description by Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA) method. Hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol were clearly involved in the formation of reductive aromas and shared the ability to act as strong suppressors of fruity and floral attributes. Specifically, hydrogen sulfide generated aromas of rotten eggs, while methanethiol generated significant increases in camembert and decreases in citrus, smoky/roasted and oxidation aromas. The simultaneous presence of hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol enhanced the intensity of the unspecific term reduction, while the specific nuances individually imparted by each of the two compounds could not be further identified. DMS did not exert any outstanding effect on the reductive character of wines and its sensory effect was matrix-dependent. It was involved in the formation of fruity notes such as cooked/candied and red/black fruits in young wines, and vegetal notes (canned vegetables) in oaked red WMs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Tensiomyography (TMG) has been used to assess neuromuscular characteristics of muscles of the lower extremity in soccer players. However, the effects of lower extremity dominance on TMG characteristics in this population have not been reported to date. The purpose of this study was to compare the TMG neuromuscular characteristics between the dominant and non-dominant lower extremity in male soccer players. METHODS Thirty-eight consecutive healthy male soccer players underwent resting TMG assessment of vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), semitendinosus (ST), biceps femoris (BF), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) in both lower extremities. The maximal displacement, delay time, contraction time, sustained time, and half-relaxation time were obtained and compared between both sides. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the vast majority of the TMG parameters between both lower extremities. The dominant side demonstrated higher VM contraction time (p = 0.008), RF sustained time (p = 0.009), RF half-relaxation time (p = 0.01), and BF sustained time (p = 0.04), but lower VL contraction time (p = 0.03) and VL delay time (p = 0.02) compared to the non-dominant side. CONCLUSION In general, TMG-assessed neuromuscular characteristics of the VM, VL, RF, ST, BF, GM, and GL were not affected by lower extremity dominance in male soccer players. Therefore, there is no need to assess both sides when using TMG to monitor the response to training or muscles at risk of injury in soccer players unless there is a specific reason. Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of anterior cruciate ligament injury on mechanical and contractile characteristics of the skeletal muscles of the lower extremity in competitive soccer players through tensiomyography (TMG). METHODS All competitive male soccer players with confirmed acute anterior cruciate ligament tear included underwent resting TMG assessment of muscles of both lower extremities before anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The same values were obtained from a sex- and sports level-matched control group. The maximal displacement, delay time, contraction time, sustained time, and half-relaxation time were obtained for the following muscles in all subjects: vastus medialis, vastus laterals, rectus femoris, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius medialis, and gastrocnemius lateralis. RESULTS The majority of TMG parameters were higher in the injured compared to the control group. The contraction time of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris was significantly higher in the injured compared to the control group (p = 0.003, p = 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). The biceps femoris was the only hamstring muscle with significant differences between groups, with increased contraction time and maximal displacement in the injured compared to the control group (p = 0.002 and p < 0.001, respectively). The gastrocnemius medialis was clearly more affected than the gastrocnemius lateralis, with contraction time, half-relaxation time, and maximal displacement significantly higher (p = 0.01, p = 0.03, and p < 0.001, respectively), and the sustained time significantly lower (p = 0.01), in the injured compared to the control group. The contraction time of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris was significantly higher in the injured compared to non-injured side in the anterior cruciate ligament-injured group (p = 0.007, p = 0.04, p = 0.004, p = 0.02, and p = 0.02, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Anterior cruciate ligament injury caused a decrease in contraction velocity (in quadriceps, hamstrings and gastrocnemius medialis), resistance to fatigue (in quadriceps and gastrocnemius medialis), and muscle tone/stiffness (in hamstrings and gastrocnemius medialis). Overall, it was demonstrated that these effects were worst in the quadriceps and gastrocnemius medialis compared to the hamstring and gastrocnemius lateralis. These findings may contribute to a better design of rehabilitation programs in order to optimize the recovery and potentially increase sport performance at return to sport. Abstract
The study aimed to determine the relationship between perceived mineral character in wine and wine chemical composition. We investigated the sensory properties and chemical composition of sauvignon blanc wines from two major sauvignon-producing countries, New Zealand and France. Sensory experiments employing 16 wines (8 French, 8 New Zealand) were conducted in Marlborough, New Zealand and in three regions of France, namely Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Sancerre/Loire region. Wine professionals (31 New Zealanders and 32 French professionals) sensorially characterised the 16 wines under three conditions, bouquet only (ortho-nasal olfaction), palate only (nose clip condition), and full tasting (global condition: ortho-nasal olfaction, retronasal olfaction, taste, trigeminal stimulation). Sensory data from the global condition only are reported in this article. Physical and chemical analyses conducted on all wines included wine standard parameters, elemental composition, volatile aroma composition, and measures of organic acids. Major results demonstrate that (i) on average French and New Zealand wines were perceived similarly in intensity of mineral character, although judgments to individual wines differed as a function of participant culture; (ii) French and NZ participants drew on different information to make their sensory judgments; and (iii) several aspects of wine composition associated positively with perception of mineral character while others associated negatively, the significant associations differing as a function of participant culture.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction on mechanical and contractile properties of the skeletal muscles of the lower extremities in soccer players through tensiomyography (TMG). METHODS All soccer players with acute ACL tear included underwent resting TMG assessment of muscles of both lower extremities before and 1 year after ACL reconstruction. The muscles assessed were vastus medialis (VM), vastus laterals (VL), rectus femoris (RF), semitendinosus (ST), biceps femoris (BF), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL). The TMG parameters obtained for each muscle were maximal displacement (D m), delay time (T d), contraction time (T c), sustained time (T s), and half-relaxation time (T r). RESULTS The injured leg had a significant decrease in VL-T c, ST-T c, GM-T c, GL-T r, and GL-T d, and a significant increase in VM-T r and GM-T s in the postoperative compared to preoperative period. The non-injured leg demonstrated significant preoperative-postoperative changes in the VL, RF, and BF, but not in VM, ST, GM, and GL The magnitude of preoperative-postoperative differences in the injured leg was significantly higher in RF-T c, ST-T c, BF-D m, and GL-T r, but lower in RF-T r and GM-T s, compared to the non-injured leg. Both groups improved their symmetry between the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups in both sides. CONCLUSIONS The quadriceps muscles improved their resistance to fatigue and contraction velocity in both sides, and the hamstring muscles improved their contraction velocity and muscle tone in both sides as well. Improvements in contraction velocity and muscle tone were more evident in the quadriceps and hamstrings of the injured compared to the uninjured side. In addition, the intervention increased the percentage of symmetry between both sides in the TMG of the quadriceps muscles and the balance between ACL-agonist (hamstrings) and ACL-antagonist (quadriceps) muscle groups in both sides. This study shows how ACL reconstruction (and subsequent rehabilitation) can positively impact neuromuscular characteristics of the quadriceps and hamstrings. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic, Level II.

Abstract
Hallux rigidus is a progressive osteoarthritic condition affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint that causes pain and stiffness, with a marked reduction in dorsiflexion. Joint arthrodesis has previously been the standard treatment of hallux rigidus; however, new surgical techniques have evolved and first metatarsophalangeal joint hemiarthroplasty is now a viable option. The present retrospective study reviewed the data from the 11 patients (12 feet) who had undergone first metatarsophalangeal joint hemiarthroplasty with the HemiCAP(®) prosthesis. Postoperatively, all feet were clinically and radiologically assessed and scored using the hallux metatarsophalangeal-interphalangeal scale developed by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the Foot and Ankle Disability Index score. Follow-up examinations were performed at a mean of 47 (range 36 to 48) months and showed a mean postoperative American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score of 66.5 (range 22 to 92) and mean Foot and Ankle Disability Index score of 63.7 (range 26.9 to 98.1). Of the 12 feet, 5 (41.7%) were reported to be pain free at the follow-up examination, 3 (25%) had mild pain, 2 (16.7%) had moderate, and 2 (16.7%) severe pain. Furthermore, 5 feet (42%) displayed no evidence of radiologic subsidence and 7 feet (58%) displayed a mean subsidence of 2.71 (range 1 to 6) mm. Hemiarthroplasty is designed to maintain the joint range of movement and allow easy conversion to arthrodesis, if required. In the present study, most patients continued to have a limited range of movement with only reasonable levels of satisfaction. Most patients continued to experience some level of pain postoperatively. The HemiCAP(®) prosthesis has recently been adapted to include a dorsal flange. This might improve the range of dorsiflexion not seen with the traditional model.

Abstract
The main aim of the present work was to test the effects of glucose and fructose on the phosphorylation levels of proteins linked to the control of overall sperm function in two species with very different metabolic characteristics, dog and boar. Incubation of dog spermatozoa with 10mM glucose increased serine phosphorylation of proteins related to cell cycle and signal transduction including cyclins B and E, Cdk2, Cdk6, Cdc6, PYK2, c-kit, Raf-1, TRK and several protein phosphatases. Incubation of dog spermatozoa with 10mM fructose decreased serine phosphorylation levels of cyclins B and D3, Cdk1/Cdc2, Cdk2, Cdk6, Akt, PI3 kinase, ERK-1 and protein kinase C. Incubation of boar spermatozoa with glucose or fructose did not modify any of the phosphorylation patterns studied. Given that one important difference between dog and boar spermatozoa is the presence of glucokinase (GK) in dog but not in boar, GK-transfected COS7 cells were incubated with either 10mM glucose or 10mM fructose. Incubation of GK-transfected cells with fructose decreased serine phosphorylation of cyclin A, ERK-2 and Hsp-70. In contrast, incubation of control COS7 cells with fructose increased serine phosphorylation of Cdk6, Cdk1/Cdc2, protein kinase C and Hsp-70. Incubation with glucose did not induce any significant effect. Our results indicate that monosaccharides act as signalling compounds in dog spermatozoa after ejaculation through changes in the phosphorylation levels of specific proteins. One of the factors that may be related to the action of sugars is the equilibrium of the total sperm hexokinase activity, in which the presence or absence of GK appears to be relevant.

Abstract
In a previous study we reported that the immunolabelling of GLUT3, HSP90AA1, and Cu/ZnSOD proteins on boar sperm did not show differences between good and poor freezability ejaculates, in terms of a qualitative analysis based on location and reactivity of these proteins at 17 degrees C and at 240 min post-thaw. Since predicting the ejaculate freezability is considerably important in sperm cryopreservation procedures, the objective of the present study was to quantify the expression of these three proteins in good and poor freezability ejaculates. For this purpose, 10 ejaculates from 9 Piétrain boars were cryopreserved and their sperm quality assessed in the three main steps of the freezing process (17 degrees C, 5 degrees C, and 240 min post-thaw). After this assessment, the 10 ejaculates were clustered for freezability on the basis of their sperm progressive motility and membrane integrity at 240 min post-thaw. From the whole ejaculates, only four good and four poor freezability ejaculates displaying the most divergent values were selected for a western blot assay using sperm samples coming from the three mentioned freezing steps. Protein levels through densitometry were significantly different between good and poor freezability ejaculates for Cu/ZnSOD at 240 min post-thaw (P <or= 0.01) and for HSP90AA1 at 17 degrees C and 5 degrees C (P <or= 0.05). This last finding claims the introduction of tests based on molecular markers in spermatozoa to accurately predict the freezability of ejaculates in order to promote the use of frozen semen on artificial insemination programmes.

Abstract
The optimization of freezing extenders is an essential issue for enhancing boar sperm cryosurvival. The aim of the present study was to disclose the role of glucose concentration of freezing extender on the metabolic activity of frozen–thawed spermatozoa. To achieve it, pooled sperm-rich ejaculate fractions from 5 mature and fertile boars (3 ejaculates per boar) were collected using the gloved-hand method. After centrifugation (2400g for 3 min), the sperm pellet was split into 7 aliquots. The aliquots were diluted to a final concentration of 1 × 109 sperm mL–1, in a Tris-citric extender supplemented with 20% egg-yolk, 3% glycerol, and 0, 0.05, 2, 4, 10, 55, or 185 mm glucose. All the extenders were adjusted to a pH of 6.8 and 310 mOsm kg–1 to avoid osmolarity effects. Extended semen samples were dispensed into 0.5-mL straws, and frozen in a programmable cell freezer at 20°C min–1. Thawing was carried out in a water bath at 37°C for 20 s. Afterward, an analysis of protein phosphorylation in tyrosine residues was carried out through bi-dimensional electrophoresis followed by a Western blot analysis. This analysis indicated that sperm samples frozen in extenders without glucose showed specific changes in the tyrosine phosphorylation pattern compared with fresh sperm. Furthermore, the addition of glucose in increasing concentrations to the freezing extender was accompanied by a concentration-dependent decrease in the overall tyrosine phosphorylation pattern, especially in proteins with a molecular weight ranging from 150 to 200 kDa and an acidic isoelectric point (pI). The maximal decrease was observed in spermatozoa frozen in the extender containing 185 mm glucose, in which an additional decrease in the tyrosine phosphorylation of proteins ranging from 60 to 80 kDa, and a basic pI was also observed. These results suggest that glucose is a modulator in the resistance of boar sperm to support freezing and thawing process, because the precise protein phosphorylation pattern of spermatozoa is directly linked to their functional status. In this way, a precise control of the glucose concentration of the freezing extender would be required to improve boar sperm cryoresistance.

Abstract
Use of AI-doses containing low-sperm numbers are increasingly been used to optimise use of elite bulls as well as to accommodate an eventual wider application of sex-sorted semen. Since spermatozoa might, however, suffer from high extension rates, thus compromising fertility, this study evaluated the post-thaw sperm quality of semen from commercial progeny-tested, high-ranked AI-sires whose semen was within acceptable limits of normality, frozen in a split-design to 15 (control, 15M) or 2 x 10(6) total spermatozoa (treatment, 2M) per straw. Assessment post-thaw included computer-evaluated sperm motility (CASA), membrane integrity (SYBR-14/PI), membrane stability (Annexin-V/PI), acrosome integrity (Carboxy-SNARF-1/PI/FITC-PSA), and chromatin integrity (AO of in situ acid-induced DNA denaturation). High extension did not affect the proportions of linearly motile spermatozoa, of membrane integrity or stability nor chromatin integrity, immediately post-thaw. However, high extension clearly affected linear sperm motility following incubation at 38 degrees C for 30 min, sperm viability when assessed by SNARF and, particularly, acrosome integrity of the otherwise viable spermatozoa. Individual sire variation was evident. Fertility was preliminarily evaluated for one of the less affected bulls in a blind field trial. A total of 109 dairy cows were randomly inseminated with 15M or 2M-straws without differences in pregnancy rate between them (47% versus 43%). This similarity in fertility rates, confirmed the in vitro methods used were appropriate for identifying cryosurvival and further suggested the site of sperm deposition was not crucial for the fertility of low-sperm AI-numbers for this particular sire. However, the inter-bull variation seen calls for caution when cryopreserving low concentrations of bull spermatozoa with conventional freezing protocols.

Abstract
SummaryGlycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are present in the oviduct in which the major part of sperm capacitation occurs. In this study we have tested how capacitation of frozen-thawed bull spermatozoa is effected by exposure to different GAGs detectable or possibly present in oviductal fluid; i.e. heparin, hyaluronan, heparan sulphate, dermatan sulphate and chondroitin sulphate. Following exposure of different duration, the spermatozoa were stained with either Chlortetracycline (CTC) or merocyanine-540 and evaluated with epifluorescent light microscopy or flow cytometry, respectively. Heparin elicited a significant increase in the number of alive, capacitated spermatozoa, either expressed as higher merocyanine-540 fluorescence (p < 0.0001) or as B-pattern (p = 0.0021) in the CTC assay, during 4 h of incubation. When comparing the different GAG treatments one by one to the negative control in the flow cytometric study, only heparin and dermatan sulphate were significant (p < 0.0001) higher than the control at 0–30 min of incubation. Duration of incubation did not affect the proportion of capacitated spermatozoa when measured as merocyanine-540 fluorescence or CTC B-pattern, but the length of the incubation did affect the number of dead (Yo-PRO 1 positive) spermatozoa (p < 0.0001). Exposure to zona pellucida proteins significantly increased the proportion of acrosome reacted spermatozoa (p = 0.016). Both heparin and dermatan sulphate induce capacitation of frozen-thawed bull spermatozoa in vitro.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes induces great alterations in female reproductive function. We analyzed the effects of tungstate, an anti-diabetic agent, on the reproductive function of healthy and diabetic female rats. METHODS Healthy and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were treated with sodium tungstate (2 mg/ml in their drinking water) for 12 weeks. Markers of reproductive function and diabetes were measured in serum, and in uterus and ovaries by Western blot or RT-PCR. Reproductive function was also assessed by mating. RESULTS Diabetic rats showed great impairment of libido, which was accompanied by a total loss of fertility (P < 0.05) and a decrease in the serum levels of FSH (P < 0.05) and LH (P < 0.05) compared with healthy rats. Tungstate treatment of diabetic rats partially recovered libido while fertility rate increased to 66.6%. This improvement was accompanied by a recovery of serum FSH (to a level higher than healthy rats) and LH. Moreover, tungstate treatment normalized ovarian expression of GLUT 3 hexose transporter, and estrogen, progesterone and FSH receptors, whereas only GLUT 3 and FSH receptors were normalized in the uterus. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that the alterations in female reproduction in diabetes were partially reversed after tungstate treatment by a mechanism(s) involving the normalization of serum FSH and LH levels, and ovarian and uterine expression of FSH receptors and GLUT3.

Abstract
We present the first study on cross-fertilization between Bt and conventional maize in real situations of coexistence in two regions in which Bt and conventional maize were cultivated. A map was designed and the different crops were identified, as were the sowing and flowering dates, in Bt and conventional maize fields. These data were used to choose the non-transgenic fields for sampling and analysis by the real-time quantification system-polymerase chain reaction (RTQ-PCR) technique. In general, the rate of cross-fertilization was higher in the borders and, in most of the fields, decreased towards the centre of the field. Nine fields had values of genetically modified organism DNA to total DNA of much lower than 0.9%, whereas in three the rate was higher. Some differences were found when comparing our results with those of common field trials. In real conditions of coexistence and in cropping areas with smaller fields, the main factors that determined cross-pollination were the synchronicity of flowering and the distances between the donor and receptor fields. By establishing an index based on these two variables, the rate of the adventitious presence of genetically modified maize could be predicted, as well as the influence of other factors. By applying this index, and in the case of a fully synchronous flowering time, a security distance between transgenic and conventional fields of about 20 m should be sufficient to maintain the adventitious presence of genetically modified organisms as a result of pollen flow below the 0.9% threshold in the total yield of the field.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to validate the joint sensory impact of target compounds on the typicality degree of wine. Target compounds were selected from previous gas chromatography-olfactometry analysis. The preliminary experiment consisted in selecting odorants thought to have a positive effect on typical Chardonnay wines. Two sets of target compounds were chosen with regard to expected relationships between their concentrations and typicality scores. Target compounds were quantified in 20 wines. The second experiment was dedicated to the sensory evaluation of aroma models obtained by supplementation in wines. Three Chardonnay wines with intermediate typicality scores were supplemented with 6- or 10-compound combinations. The typicality degree of 24 samples was assessed by expert orthonasal perception. Wines supplemented with the 6-compound combinations were judged to be intermediate, whereas wines including the 10-compound combinations were considered to be quite representative of the Chardonnay concept. Such results confirm the active contribution of the 10 combined target compounds to typical Chardonnay wines.

Abstract
Inter- and intra-boar differences in sperm freezability are observed independent of the sperm quality before freezing, the breed, or the genetic line. This study aimed to determine whether boars with different post-thaw sperm quality also show differences in sperm DNA integrity. Sperm-rich fractions (3 to 10 ejaculates per boar) from 19 fertile mature boars were extended in Beltsville thawing solution (BTS) and cooled to 17�C for 16 h. Then, samples were centrifuged at 2400g for 3 min, extended in freezing extender (lactose/egg yolk/glycerol/Equex STM; Nova Chemical Sales, Inc., Scituate, MA, USA) to a final concentration of 1 � 109 spermatozoa/mL, dispensed into 0.5 mL straws, and frozen in a programmable cell freezer at a rate of -20�C min. Thawing was carried out in a water bath at 37�C for 20 s. Frozen-thawed spermatozoa were evaluated for progressive sperm motility (PSM) using a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system, and sperm viability (PMI) using flow cytometry. All data generated were used for a multivariate pattern analysis (PATN; CSIRO, Canberra, Australia) which objectively classified all boars into two groups, categorized as good (n = 10; >60% PSM and PMI) or bad (n = 9; <40% PSM and PMI) based on their sperm freezability. Post-thaw sperm quality was consistent for different ejaculates within boars (P < 0.05). The DNA-integrity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa was evaluated according to the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA; Evenson et al. 1980 Science 210, 1131-1133). All SCSA variables (X mean, DNA fragmentation index (DFI), and the standard deviation of the DFI), were significantly higher for bad freezers (P < 0.001). The percentage of spermatozoa with abnormal chromatin structure ranged from 1.06 to 3.42% for good and 3.06 to 6.04% for bad freezers. Although these differences exist between good and bad sperm freezers, and can only to some extent be the product of cryopreservation, the levels of affected spermatozoa can not explain the differences on post-thaw sperm survival seen in the two categories of sires.

Abstract
There is increasing interest in decreasing the number of spermatozoa per AI dose, owing to the discrimination of threshold concentration and fertility, economical revenues and the use of sexed semen. This study evaluated the quality (as sperm viability, acrosome integrity, membrane stability and chromatin stability) post-thaw of semen collected from four elite AI sires and frozen at 15 × 106 (control) or 2 × 106 spermatozoa (spz) per dose to disclose eventual deleterious extension effects. Semen collected via a.v. from 4 élite AI sires was split-processed and frozen in 0.25 mL plastic straws under commercial conditions, at either 2 × 106 or 15 × 106 spz/straw (the latter as control). The semen parameters were within acceptable limits of normality. The post-thaw samples showed acceptable motility (above 50%). Sperm viability and stability were assessed post-thaw using flow cytometry of cells loaded with SYBR-14 and propidium iodide (PI) for sperm viability (membrane integrity), and with carboxy-SNARF-1 (SNARF; Invitrogen AB, Frolunda, Sweden), PI, and FITC-Pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA, triple stain) for acrosome status. Membrane stability status was measured with Annexin-V/PI, while sperm chromatin condensation and stability were assessed following in situ acid-induced DNA denaturation and staining with acridine orange. No significant differences were seen between the two concentrations regarding sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity (SYBR/PI, SNARF), or chromatin stability. The highly extended semen (2 × 106 spz/straw), however, showed a higher (P < 0.05) frequency of spermatozoa with translocated phosphatydil serine (as detected with Annexin-V), indicating their plasma membranes had become unstable. Also, there were more spermatozoa showing acrosomal damage (PSA). In conclusion, low concentrations of spermatozoa do not properly sustain conventional cryopreservation, although damages appear restricted to the sperm membrane. These changes in the stability of the plasma membrane apparently did not affect the viability of the spermatozoa, although they may negatively affect their lifespan. These findings may have an impact on the care that must be taken when cryopreserving low concentrations of spermatozoa with conventional freezing protocols.

Abstract
In vitro capacitation of dog spermatozoa in a medium without sugars and with lactate as the metabolic substrate (l-CCM) was accompanied by a progressive increase of intracellular glycogen during the first 2 h of incubation, which was followed by a subsequent decrease of glycogen levels after up to 4 h of incubation. Lactate from the medium is the source for the observed glycogen synthesis, as the presence of [(14)C]glycogen after the addition to l-CCM with [(14)C]lactate was demonstrated. The existence of functional gluconeogenesis in dog sperm was also sustained by the presence of key enzymes of this metabolic pathway, such as fructose 1,6-bisphophatase and aldolase B. On the other hand, glycogen metabolism from gluconeogenic sources was important in the maintenance of a correct in vitro fertilization after incubation in the l-CCM. This was demonstrated after the addition of phenylacetic acid (PAA) to l-CCM. In the presence of PAA, in vitro capacitation of dog spermatozoa suffered alterations, which translated into changes in capacitation functional markers, like the increase in the percentage of altered acrosomes, a distinct motion pattern, decrease or even disappearance of capacitation-induced tyrosine phosphorylation, and increased heterogeneity of the chlorotetracycline pattern in capacitated cells. Thus, this is the first report indicating the existence of a functional glyconeogenesis in mammalian spermatozoa. Moreover, gluconeogenesis-linked glycogen metabolism seems to be of importance in the maintenance of a correct in vitro capacitation in dog sperm in the absence of hexoses in the medium.

Abstract
Twelve adult New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. In group 1, 30% of the central mass of the right patellar tendon was removed. In group 2, 60% was removed. The left knees served as controls. The animals were killed 1 year later. The patella-patellar tendon-tibial tuberosity units of all knees were studied using histological and morphometric analysis. In both groups, the tendons had lengthened. Lengthening average was 2.50 mm in group 1 and 8.17 mm in group 2. In both groups, histology revealed poor alignment of the collagen fibres and high cellularity, although the findings in group 1 were nearer the normal histological pattern. The results suggest that removal of significant portions of the patellar tendon leads to lengthening of the resulting tendon. In clinical practice, it seems prudent to pay attention to the dimensions of the patellar tendon when harvesting a graft.

Abstract
PURPOSE The anatomic depth of the hip joint has long been one of the limiting factors in the development of arthroscopy of this particular joint. A major factor would seem to be variation in body size. The main purpose of this study was to quantify the distance between the joint and the skin in usual arthroscopic approaches. TYPE OF STUDY In vivo radiologic study using computed tomography. METHODS We studied the distance from the center of the acetabulum to the skin. The lines that we studied correspond to the paratrochanteric, the anterolateral, and anterior arthroscopic entry points. RESULTS Although notable differences exist from one individual to another, the average values of the aforementioned are 12.4 cm, 11.2 cm, and 9.8 cm, respectively. The distances of these portals are greater in women than in men (P <.05), and there is no statistically significant relationship to age. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present work suggest that surgical tools needed for arthroscopy of the hip should be more than 16 cm long to guarantee performing hip arthroscopy comfortably in more that 95% of the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our purpose was to describe the time trend in HIV seroprevalence among homo/ bisexual men. SUBJECTS AND METHOD We analyzed 9,383 homo/ bisexual men who had a first voluntary test for HIV in 10 Spanish clinics from 1992 to 2000. RESULTS HIV prevalence decreased from 20.3% in 1992 to 8.4% in 2000. In the multivariate analysis this decline appeared independently associated with the testing year and the birth cohort. CONCLUSIONS New generations of voluntarily tested homo/bisexual men are less infected by HIV, but it is yet necessary to intensify the prevention programs.

Abstract
Incubation of dog spermatozoa with 10 mmol l(-1) glucose or fructose rapidly increased the intracellular content of glucose 6-phosphate and fructose 6-phosphate, although the effect of fructose was greater. These effects were correlated with increases in ATP, ribose 5-phosphate and glycogen contents, and in the rates of formation of L-lactate and CO2. In all cases, except for ATP and glycogen, the effect of fructose was greater than that of glucose. The total hexokinase activity of the crude extracts of dog spermatozoa was more sensitive to fructose than to glucose at lower concentrations (0.1-3.0 mmol l(-1)). Both monosaccharides induced a fast and intense increase in the overall tyrosine phosphorylation of dog spermatozoa, although their specific induced-phosphorylation patterns differed slightly. Glut 3 and Glut 5 hexose transporters were the main hexose transporters in dog spermatozoa; however, other possible SGLT family-related hexose transporters were also localized. These data indicate that, at concentrations from 1 mmol l(-1) to 10 mmol l(-1), fructose has a stronger effect than glucose on hexose metabolism of dog spermatozoa. These differences appear to be related to variations in the sensitivity of hexokinase activity. Moreover, the differential hexose metabolism induced by the two sugars had distinct effects on the function of dog spermatozoa, as revealed by the diverse patterns of tyrosine phosphorylation.
