Abstract
A fast RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous separation of eleven main flavonoid aglycones in food samples was developed. Flavonoids were divided in three groups according to their hydrophobicity and were resolved by a ternary gradient elution and diode array detection within analysis times less than 15 min. The detection limits of the flavonoids studied were in the range between 0.04 and 0.31 microg/mL, with repeatabilities values between 0.4 and 5%. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of these compounds in complex natural samples, like propolis and Ginkgo biloba.

Abstract
In this study, a novel polymeric material functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for isolation of proteins. The sorbent was synthesized from a powdered poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) monolith, and modified with ammonia, followed by immobilization of AuNPs on the pore surface of the material. To evaluate the performance of this SPE support, proteins were selected as test solutes, being the extraction conditions and other parameters (loading capacity and regenerative ability of sorbent) established. The results indicated that this sorbent could be employed to selectively capture proteins according to their pI, on the basis of the strong affinity of these biomacromolecules towards to AuNPs surface. The applicability of this sorbent was demonstrated by isolating protein species of interest (bovine serum albumin, cytochrome c and lectins in European mistletoe leaves), followed by SDS-PAGE analysis.

Abstract
In this work, a method for the separation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) present in human milk and from other mammalian species by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using a core-shell particle packed column with UV and evaporative light-scattering detectors is described. Under optimal conditions, a mobile phase containing acetonitrile/n-pentanol at 10 °C gave an excellent resolution among more than 50 TAG peaks. A small-scale method for fat extraction in these milks (particularly of interest for human milk samples) using minimal amounts of sample and reagents was also developed. The proposed extraction protocol and the traditional method were compared, giving similar results, with respect to the total fat and relative TAG contents. Finally, a statistical study based on linear discriminant analysis on the TAG composition of different types of milks (human, cow, sheep, and goat) was carried out to differentiate the samples according to their mammalian origin.

Abstract
An improved method for the determination of cow's milk in non-bovine cheese is reported: electrophoresis of whey proteins in acidic, isoelectric buffers. Two background electrolytes (BGEs) have been tested: (i) 50 mM iminodiacetic acid (pH=isoelectric point=2.30 at 25 degrees C), 0.5% hydroxyethylcellulose, 0.1% Tween 20 and 6 M urea (apparent pH 3.1), E=300 V/cm, for the separation of alpha-lactalbumins (alpha-LAs); (ii) a BGE with the same composition, but supplemented with 10% Tween 20, E=450 V/cm, for the fractionation of beta-lactoglobulins (beta-LGs). Surfactants have a discriminating effect on the retention behaviour of the bovine alpha-LA and beta-LG proteins, owing to the different strength of the protein-surfactant association complexes, and are needed for separating these two proteins from small peaks in the electropherograms generated by degradation of casein during cheese ripening. Novel equations are given for deriving the ratio of the area (or height) of bovine alpha-LA, or beta-LG, to the area (or height) of ovine or caprine alpha-LA or beta-LG (such ratios being typically used to determine the percentage of cow's milk in dairy products), since previous equations had marked drawbacks, such as non-linearity of the plots with increasing slopes at high cow's milk percentages, and too broad confidence limits at high cow's milk contents, where the peak area (or height) ratio tends asymptotically to infinite. With the novel procedures reported, contents of cow's milk as low as 1% can be quantified in goat's and ewe's cheeses. The present protocols give lower detection limits, are cheaper and more rapid than any other methodology reported in the literature, and can be easily applied to the routine quality control of binary and ternary cheeses.

Abstract
This paper describes the application of capillary electrophoresis to separate and quantify the main polysaccharide components, amylose and amylopectin, present in starch samples. The separation is based on the well-known affinity of these compounds to iodine. The starch components could be effectively separated in less than 7 min using an uncoated fused-silica 'bubble cell' capillary. The proposed method has been applied for the quantitative determination of the soluble amylose content and the ratio amylose-amylopectin in commercial starches. It is shown that the present method is reliable, gives detection limits in the order of 0.1 mg mL(-1), is faster than other methodologies reported in the literature, and can be easily applied to the analysis of different starches. In spite of differences in solubility of amylopectin from different sources, a reasonable estimate of the amylose-amylopectin ratio could be made. Additionally, it was shown that the resulting profiles obtained after hydrolysis with isoamylase and alpha-amylase can provide information on the structure of the starches studied.

Abstract
Antibiotics are widely used to prevent or treat some diseases in human and veterinary medicine and also as animal growth promoters. The presence of these compounds in foods derived from food-producing animals can be a risk for human health. Consequently, regulatory agencies have set maximum residue limits for antibiotics in food samples. Therefore, the development of novel methodologies for its determination in food samples is required. Specifically, the analysis and quantification of these substances in meat tissues is a challenge for the analytical chemistry research community. This is due to the complexity of the matrix and the low detection limits required by the regulatory agencies. In this sense, a comprehensive review on the development of new sample preparation treatments involving extraction, cleanup, and enrichment steps of antibiotics in meat samples in combination with sensitive and sophisticated determination techniques that have been carry out in the last years is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this work is to summarize the published methodologies for the determination of antibiotics from 2016 until the beginning of the second semester of 2020. The first part of this review includes an introduction about antibiotic families, followed by sample preparation and determination techniques applied to the different families. Finally, a detailed discussion of the current trends and the future possible perspectives in this field are also included.

Abstract
A novel method is reported for analyzing adulteration of goat and ewe cheeses with cow's milk: capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) in isoelectric, acidic buffers (50 mM imino diacetic acid, IDA, pH = pI 2.3). The cheese samples were extracted with a 20:80 v/v ethanol-water mixture in presence of 3 M urea and 1% beta-mercaptoethanol for 1 h. After centrifugation and lipid extraction, the samples were dissolved in 50 mM IDA, 6 M urea and 0.5% hydroxyethyl cellulose and analyzed by CZE at 700 V/cm. A total of 18 characteristic peaks were resolved among the three types of cheeses and 18 variables were defined as their respective areas. There was excellent similarity among the electrophoretic patterns obtained with cheeses of a given type of milk, while cheeses made with different types of milk were easily distinguishable. Most peaks were common to all cheeses, but the profile differed depending on the type of milk used. Principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and partial least squares regression (PLS) were used for statistical analysis of the data obtained by CZE. In particular, by using PLS multivariate regression, the contents of cow's milk in presumably pure goat and ewe cheeses, as well as in binary and ternary mixtures, could be predicted with relative standard deviations of ca. 6-7%. In addition, the ripening time in goat and ewe cheeses could also be predicted.

Abstract
A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) procedure for the determination of l-ascorbic acid (AA) and total ascorbic acid (TAA, as the sum of AA and dehydroascorbic acid) in vascular plants, lichens, bryophytes, and liverworts is described. The samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and extracted with 2% metaphosphoric acid. To determine AA, an aliquot was directly injected in a fused-silica capillary. The determination of TAA was performed upon its reduction with dl-homocysteine at pH 7. The background electrolyte contained 60 mM sodium chloride, 60 mM sodium dihydrogen phosphate, 1 x 10(-4)% hexadimetrine bromide, and NaOH up to pH 7. The procedure was rapid and highly reproducible; the limit of detection was 0.2 microg ml-1, which corresponded to 0.4 mg/100 g of sample. The method was validated by comparison with an enzymatic assay. While the enzymatic assay failed to quantify AA in some plants owing to strong background UV absorption, CZE was successful in all the extracts assayed.

Abstract
A method for the determination of tocopherols and tocotrienols in vegetable oils by nanoliquid chromatography with UV-vis detection has been developed. The separation of tocopherols was optimized in terms of mobile phase composition on the basis of the best compromise between efficiency, resolution, and analysis time. The optimal conditions were achieved using a C18 silica monolithic column (150 mm x 0.1 mm) with an isocratic elution of acetonitrile/methanol/water (acidified with 0.2% acetic acid) at a flow rate of 0.5 microL min(-1), giving a total analysis time below 18 min. The method has been applied to the quantification of tocopherols and tocotrienols present in several vegetable oils with different botanical origins.

Abstract
This study shows an improved method for the determination of L-ascorbic acid (l-AA) in fruits of Lycopersicon by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). Two backgrounds electrolytes (BGEs) have been tested: (i) 400 mM borate at pH 8.0 and 1 x 10(-2)% hexadimethrine bromide, for the separation of Eulycopersicon subgenus species; and (ii) as in BGE(i) but supplemented with 20% (v/v) acetonitrile, for the separation of species of the Eriopersicon subgenus. The present procedures were compared with two routine methods-enzymatic assay and potentiometric titration with 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol. While these routine methods presented some difficulties in quantifying l-AA in several Lycopersicon fruits, CZE was successfully applied in all the analyzed samples. The proposed CZE protocols give lower detection limits (<0.4 microg ml(-1)); are cheaper, quicker, and highly reproducible; and can be applied to analyze large series of samples (ca. 50 samples per day) which is utmost importance, not only in screening trials for internal quality and tomato breeding programs, but also in systematic and routine characterization of Lycopersicon fruits.

Abstract
Limited information exists about epidemiology and risk factors of infection following pancreas-kidney transplantation and its impact on long-term pancreatic graft function. A retrospective chart review of episodes of severe infection in consecutive pancreas-kidney transplantations in a single institution was performed to assess the epidemiology, risk factors for infection and their impact on the development of pancreatic graft dysfunction. Ninety-four (81%) of 116 recipients (median follow-up of 1492 days; mean 1594) developed 248 episodes of severe infection. Bacterial infections were present in 208 episodes, with 12% of the isolates resistant to antibiotics used in prophylaxis. There were 40 episodes of fungal infection in 32 patients (28%) (mostly Candida spp), and CMV disease appeared in 20 patients (17%), of which 50% appeared after the third month following surgery. The multivariate analysis identified that surgical re-intervention and the use of steroid pulses were independently associated with the development of any infection. Additionally, pre-transplant evidence of peripheral artery disease, a longer cold ischaemia time and high transfusional requirements were associated with fungal infections. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) mismatch was independently related to CMV disease and female sex, and bladder drainage of the exocrine pancreas was associated with urinary tract infection. At the end of follow-up, 29 patients (25%) had developed severe pancreatic graft dysfunction, and fungal infection was independently associated with it. Our study identifies a subset of pancreas-kidney transplant recipients at a higher risk of developing severe infection. Fungal infection is an independent risk factor for the development of severe pancreatic graft dysfunction.

Abstract
The application of mixed micellar electrokinetic chromatography to the separation of ten flavonoid aglycones (catechin, epicatechin, naringenin, morin, fisetin, quercetin, kaempferol, galangin, apigenin, and chrysin) belonging to four different classes (flavanols, flavanones, flavonols, and flavones), and expected to be prominent in commonly consumed foods, has been developed. A micellar system composed of 25 mM SDS and 25 mM sodium cholate buffered at pH 7.0 provided a simultaneous separation of all compounds in less than 20 min. The procedure could be easily adapted to the determination of some flavonoids from each of these classes in real complex samples (propolis, Ginkgo biloba, etc.). The LODs of these compounds were in the range of 1.2-4 microg/mL, and the peak area and migration time repeatabilities were below 6.0 and 3.1%, respectively.

Abstract
The residual silanol acidity and activity of several microparticulate and monolithic C18 columns has been measured from the retention of LiNO3 in the columns with a methanol/buffer (1 mM in Na+) (60:40 v/v) mobile phase buffered to different pH values. For Luna C18 (2) and LiChrospher RP-18 columns, at least two different types of silanols with different acidity for each packing, were observed. Purospher RP-18e and Chromolith RP-18e packings present evidence of some active silanols only at pH values close to their basic pH stability limit or higher. The results obtained have been compared with those obtained previously for Resolve C18, Resolve Silica, Symmetry C18, Symmetry Silica, XTerra MSC18 and Underivatized XTerra. A modification of an equation previously proposed has been applied to all columns studied and the results obtained have been used to classify the columns according to their silanol acidity and activity. The method allows the prediction of the extent of the silanol activity of the columns studied at a particular mobile phase pH.

Abstract
Mixtures of the cationic surfactants benzalkonium chloride (BKC) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were quickly resolved and reproducibly and reliably determined by using background electrolytes (BGEs) containing 80 mM borate, pH 8.5, bile salts and large concentrations of an organic solvent. When the bile salt is present, the separation mechanism changes from capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) to a mixed micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC)-CZE, with predominant MEKC interactions, which lead to an excellent resolution of all the solutes, including the C12-C18 homologues of BKC and CPC. A BGE containing 50 mM sodium deoxycholate and 30% ethanol for an extreme resolution, or 20% tetrahydrofuran for an adequate resolution within a much shorter analysis time, is recommended. The procedure was applied to the determination of the surfactants in industrial and household formulations, with excellent resolution between the homologues, detection limits of a few microg ml(-1) and reproducibilities below 2%.
