Abstract
Coastal ecosystems are becoming increasingly threatened by human activities and there is growing appreciation that management must consider the impacts of multiple stressors. Cumulative effects assessments (CEAs) have become a popular tool for identifying the distribution and intensity of multiple human stressors in coastal ecosystems. Few studies, however, have demonstrated strong correlations between CEAs and change in ecosystem condition, questioning its management use. Here, we apply a CEA to the endangered seagrass Posidonia australis in Pittwater, NSW, Australia, using spatial data on known stressors to seagrass related to foreshore development, water quality, vessel traffic and fishing. We tested how well cumulative effects scores explained changes in P. australis extent measured between 2005 and 2019 using high-resolution aerial imagery. A negative correlation between P. australis and estimated cumulative effects scores was observed (R2 = 22 %), and we identified a threshold of cumulative effects above which losses of P. australis became more likely. Using baited remote underwater video, we surveyed fishes over P. australis and non-vegetated sediments to infer and quantify how impacts of cumulative effects to P. australis extent would flow on to fish assemblages. P. australis contained a distinct assemblage of fish, and on non-vegetated sediments the abundance of sparids, which are of importance to fisheries, increased with closer proximity to P. australis. Our results demonstrate the negative impact of multiple stressors on P. australis and the consequences for fish biodiversity and fisheries production across much of the estuary. Management actions aimed at reducing or limiting cumulative effects to low and moderate levels will help conserve P. australis and its associated fish biodiversity and productivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a rare but insidious tumor that arises from mesenchymal tissue. Preoperative RT, followed by resection, is routinely used in extremity and truncal STS. The impact of RT on tumor volume and implications for prognosis is a great concern for patients, as changes in volume is often perceived as a reflection of treatment response. To date, data between tumor volume changes after RT and overall survival (OS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in STS is sparse. In this study, we investigate changes in tumor volume after preoperative RT and its impact on OS and DMFS. MATERIALS/METHODS Between 2000 and 2022, patients with stage I-III primary sarcoma of the extremity or trunk treated with pre-operative RT and wide resection were retrospectively reviewed from a prospective repository. Tumors were contoured using T2 sequences on MRIs within 2 weeks of initiation of RT and within 4 weeks post-RT. Tumor volume was determined using the medical image merge software. Univariate analysis (UVA) was performed using the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis (MVA) was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS One hundred thirty-two patients had both pre- and post-RT MRIs available for contours. Median follow-up was 6 years. Median age at diagnosis was 56 years (range = 19-92). Most patients had stage III (73%) disease in the lower extremity (75%). The most common histology was undifferentiated sarcoma (30%). Median dose was 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Chemotherapy was administered in 44 (33%) patients. Median tumor volume prior to and after RT was 198 cc (range = 7.49 - 3899.87) and 225.21 cc (range = 0-9879.2), respectively. A decrease in tumor volume was seen in 90 patients (68%) from pre- to post-RT. In these patients, the mean percent change was -35%. Forty-two patients had an increase in tumor volume post-RT with a mean percent change of 56%. Overall local control was 98%. The 2- and 5-year OS were 89% and 76%, respectively. The 2- and 5-year DMFS was 76% and 70%, respectively. On UVA, increased age (p < 0.001), KPS ≤80 (p = 0.002), and smokers (p = 0.009) were associated with decreased OS. No variables were associated with DMFS. On MVA, age (p = 0.01) was associated with decreased OS and female gender (p = 0.03) and high-grade disease was associated with decreased DMFS (p = 0.04) Change in tumor volume did not impact OS (p = 0.15) or DMFS (p = 0.75). The 2- and 5-year DMFS for patients with a decrease in tumor volume was 79% and 71%, respectively. The 2 and 5-year DMFS for patients with an increase in tumor volume was 77% and 70%, respectively. The 2- and 5-year OS for patients with a decrease in tumor volume was 92% and 80%, respectively. The 2 and 5-year OS for patients with an increase in tumor volume was 83% and 69%, respectively. CONCLUSION Change in tumor volume did not significantly impact OS and DMFS. Further studies with an increased sample size are warranted to corroborate these findings, however these results may assuage patient anxieties about the perceived tumor response to RT.

Abstract
In this Letter, we present the design and performance of the frequency-dependent squeezed vacuum source that will be used for the broadband quantum noise reduction of the Advanced Virgo Plus gravitational-wave detector in the upcoming observation run. The frequency-dependent squeezed field is generated by a phase rotation of a frequency-independent squeezed state through a 285 m long, high-finesse, near-detuned optical resonator. With about 8.5 dB of generated squeezing, up to 5.6 dB of quantum noise suppression has been measured at high frequency while close to the filter cavity resonance frequency, the intracavity losses limit this value to about 2 dB. Frequency-dependent squeezing is produced with a rotation frequency stability of about 6 Hz rms, which is maintained over the long term. The achieved results fulfill the frequency dependent squeezed vacuum source requirements for Advanced Virgo Plus. With the current squeezing source, considering also the estimated squeezing degradation induced by the interferometer, we expect a reduction of the quantum shot noise and radiation pressure noise of up to 4.5 dB and 2 dB, respectively.

Abstract
We report on a search for compact binary coalescences where at least one binary component has a mass between 0.2 M_{⊙} and 1.0 M_{⊙} in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data collected between 1 April 2019 1500 UTC and 1 October 2019 1500 UTC. We extend our previous analyses in two main ways: we include data from the Virgo detector and we allow for more unequal mass systems, with mass ratio q≥0.1. We do not report any gravitational-wave candidates. The most significant trigger has a false alarm rate of 0.14 yr^{-1}. This implies an upper limit on the merger rate of subsolar binaries in the range [220-24200] Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}, depending on the chirp mass of the binary. We use this upper limit to derive astrophysical constraints on two phenomenological models that could produce subsolar-mass compact objects. One is an isotropic distribution of equal-mass primordial black holes. Using this model, we find that the fraction of dark matter in primordial black holes in the mass range 0.2 M_{⊙}<m_{PBH}<1.0 M_{⊙} is f_{PBH}≡Ω_{PBH}/Ω_{DM}≲6%. This improves existing constraints on primordial black hole abundance by a factor of ∼3. The other is a dissipative dark matter model, in which fermionic dark matter can collapse and form black holes. The upper limit on the fraction of dark matter black holes depends on the minimum mass of the black holes that can be formed: the most constraining result is obtained at M_{min}=1 M_{⊙}, where f_{DBH}≡Ω_{DBH}/Ω_{DM}≲0.003%. These are the first constraints placed on dissipative dark models by subsolar-mass analyses.

Abstract
Additive engineering has been applied widely to improve the efficiency and/or stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Most additives used to date are difficult to locate within PSCs as they are small molecules or linear polymers. In this work, we introduce, for the first time, carboxylic acid-functionalized nanogels (NGs) as additives for PSCs. NGs are swellable sub-100 nm gel particles. The NGs consist of poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate)-co-methacrylic acid-co-ethylenegylcol dimethacrylate (PMEO2MA-MAA-EGD) particles prepared by a scalable synthesis, which have a diameter of 40 nm. They are visualized in the perovskite films using SEM and are located at the grain boundaries. X-ray photoelectron and FTIR spectroscopy reveal that the NGs coordinate with Pb2+ via the -COOH groups. Including the NGs within the PSCs increased the grain size, decreased nonradiative recombination, and increased the power conversion efficiency (PCE) to 20.20%. The NGs also greatly increase perovskite stability to ambient storage, elevated temperature, and humidity. The best system maintained more than 80% of its original PCE after 180 days of storage under ambient conditions. Tensile cross-cut tape adhesion tests are used to assess perovskite film mechanical integrity. The NGs increased both the adhesion of the perovskite to the substrate and the mechanical stability. This study demonstrates that NGs are an attractive alternative to molecularly dispersed additives for providing performance benefits to PSCs. Our study indicates that the NGs act as a passivator, stabilizer, cross-linker, and adhesion promoter.

We report the manufacture of fully solution processed photodetectors based on two-dimensional tin(ii) sulfide assembled via the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The method we propose can coat a variety of substrates including paper, Si/SiO2 and flexible polymer allowing for a potentially wide range of applications in future optoelectronic devices.

We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO-Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10^{-15}. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

Abstract
The quantum radiation pressure and the quantum shot noise in laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors constitute a macroscopic manifestation of the Heisenberg inequality. If quantum shot noise can be easily observed, the observation of quantum radiation pressure noise has been elusive, so far, due to the technical noise competing with quantum effects. Here, we discuss the evidence of quantum radiation pressure noise in the Advanced Virgo gravitational wave detector. In our experiment, we inject squeezed vacuum states of light into the interferometer in order to manipulate the quantum backaction on the 42 kg mirrors and observe the corresponding quantum noise driven displacement at frequencies between 30 and 70 Hz. The experimental data, obtained in various interferometer configurations, is tested against the Advanced Virgo detector quantum noise model which confirmed the measured magnitude of quantum radiation pressure noise.

Abstract
Metal sulfide and metal oxide alloys of the form Mo1-x W x S2 and Mo1-x W x O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) are synthesized with varying nominal stoichiometries (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0) by thermolysis of the molecular precursors MoL4 and WS(S2)L2 (where L = S2CNEt2) in tandem and in various ratios. Either transition-metal dichalcogenides or transition-metal oxides can be produced from the same pair of precursors by the choice of reaction conditions; metal sulfide alloys of the form Mo1-x W x S2 are produced in an argon atmosphere, while the corresponding metal oxide alloys Mo1-x W x O3 are produced in air, both under atmospheric pressure at 450 °C and for only 1 h. Changes in Raman spectra and in powder X-ray diffraction patterns are observed across the series of alloys, which confirm that alloying is successful in the bulk materials. For the oxide materials, we show that the relatively complicated diffraction patterns are a result of differences in the tilt angle of MO6 octahedra within three closely related unit cell types. Alloying of Mo and W in the products is characterized at the microscale and nanoscale by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning transmission electron microscopy-EDX spectroscopy, respectively.

Abstract
On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85_{-14}^{+21} M_{⊙} and 66_{-18}^{+17} M_{⊙} (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65 M_{⊙}. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142_{-16}^{+28} M_{⊙}, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3_{-2.6}^{+2.4} Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82_{-0.34}^{+0.28}. The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13_{-0.11}^{+0.30} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}.

Abstract
Thin films of MoS2 bilayer nanoflakes, which are predominantly a single flake thick and with flakes in edge-to-edge contact, have been produced via self-assembled tiling at the planar interface between two immiscible liquids. Films of several square centimeters extent can be produced with a total covered area approaching 90% and over 70% of the film covered by single flakes without overlap. Films produced through liquid/liquid assembly are shown to produce a lower uncovered area fraction and more uniform thickness when compared with films of similar areal coverage produced by the "top-down" techniques of spin coating and spray coating. Statistical analysis of flake coverage data, measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), shows that liquid/liquid assembly produces a distinctly different variation in film thickness than conventional top-down deposition. This supports the hypothesis that the two-dimensional (2D) confinement of liquid/liquid assembly produces more uniform films. Demonstrator field-effect transistors (FETs) manufactured from the films exhibit mobility and on/off current ratios of 0.73 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 105, respectively, comparable to FETs of similar layout and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown or mechanically cleaved single-crystal MoS2 channel material. This work demonstrates the use of liquid/liquid interfaces as a useful tool for the self-assembly of high-performance thin-film devices made from dispersions of 2D materials.

Abstract
We present our current best estimate of the plausible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next several years, with the intention of providing information to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals for the third (O3), fourth (O4) and fifth observing (O5) runs, including the planned upgrades of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. We study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source for gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary systems of compact objects, that is binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems. The ability to localize the sources is given as a sky-area probability, luminosity distance, and comoving volume. The median sky localization area (90% credible region) is expected to be a few hundreds of square degrees for all types of binary systems during O3 with the Advanced LIGO and Virgo (HLV) network. The median sky localization area will improve to a few tens of square degrees during O4 with the Advanced LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (HLVK) network. During O3, the median localization volume (90% credible region) is expected to be on the order of 10 5 , 10 6 , 10 7 Mpc 3 for binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems, respectively. The localization volume in O4 is expected to be about a factor two smaller than in O3. We predict a detection count of 1 - 1 + 12 ( 10 - 10 + 52 ) for binary neutron star mergers, of 0 - 0 + 19 ( 1 - 1 + 91 ) for neutron star-black hole mergers, and 17 - 11 + 22 ( 79 - 44 + 89 ) for binary black hole mergers in a one-calendar-year observing run of the HLV network during O3 (HLVK network during O4). We evaluate sensitivity and localization expectations for unmodeled signal searches, including the search for intermediate mass black hole binary mergers.

Abstract
Current interferometric gravitational-wave detectors are limited by quantum noise over a wide range of their measurement bandwidth. One method to overcome the quantum limit is the injection of squeezed vacuum states of light into the interferometer's dark port. Here, we report on the successful application of this quantum technology to improve the shot noise limited sensitivity of the Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detector. A sensitivity enhancement of up to 3.2±0.1 dB beyond the shot noise limit is achieved. This nonclassical improvement corresponds to a 5%-8% increase of the binary neutron star horizon. The squeezing injection was fully automated and over the first 5 months of the third joint LIGO-Virgo observation run O3 squeezing was applied for more than 99% of the science time. During this period several gravitational-wave candidates have been recorded.

Abstract
We present a search for subsolar mass ultracompact objects in data obtained during Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In contrast to a previous search of Advanced LIGO data from the first observing run, this search includes the effects of component spin on the gravitational waveform. We identify no viable gravitational-wave candidates consistent with subsolar mass ultracompact binaries with at least one component between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙}. We use the null result to constrain the binary merger rate of (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 3.7×10^{5} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the binary merger rate of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 5.2×10^{3} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}. Subsolar mass ultracompact objects are not expected to form via known stellar evolution channels, though it has been suggested that primordial density fluctuations or particle dark matter with cooling mechanisms and/or nuclear interactions could form black holes with subsolar masses. Assuming a particular primordial black hole (PBH) formation model, we constrain a population of merging 0.2 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 16% of the dark matter density and a population of merging 1.0 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 2% of the dark matter density. We discuss how constraints on the merger rate and dark matter fraction may be extended to arbitrary black hole population models that predict subsolar mass binaries.

Abstract
Conductive inks for the future printed electronics should have the following merits: high conductivity, flexibility, low cost, and compatibility with wide range of substrates. However, the state-of-the-art conductive inks based on metal nanoparticles are high in cost and poor in flexibility. Herein, we reported a highly conductive, low cost, and super flexible ink based on graphene nanoplatelets. The graphene ink has been screen-printed on plastic and paper substrates. Combined with postprinting treatments including thermal annealing and compression rolling, the printed graphene pattern shows a high conductivity of 8.81 × 104 S m-1 and good flexibility without significant conductivity loss after 1000 bending cycles. We further demonstrate that the printed highly conductive graphene patterns can act as current collectors for supercapacitors. The supercapacitor with the printed graphene pattern as the current collector and printed activated carbon as the active material shows a good rate capability of up to 200 mV s-1. This work potentially provides a promising route toward the large-scale fabrication of low cost yet flexible printed electronic devices.

Abstract
The recent discovery by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo of a gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral has enabled tests of general relativity (GR) with this new type of source. This source, for the first time, permits tests of strong-field dynamics of compact binaries in the presence of matter. In this Letter, we place constraints on the dipole radiation and possible deviations from GR in the post-Newtonian coefficients that govern the inspiral regime. Bounds on modified dispersion of gravitational waves are obtained; in combination with information from the observed electromagnetic counterpart we can also constrain effects due to large extra dimensions. Finally, the polarization content of the gravitational wave signal is studied. The results of all tests performed here show good agreement with GR.

Abstract
We analyze the impact of a proposed tidal instability coupling p modes and g modes within neutron stars on GW170817. This nonresonant instability transfers energy from the orbit of the binary to internal modes of the stars, accelerating the gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We model the impact of this instability on the phasing of the gravitational wave signal using three parameters per star: an overall amplitude, a saturation frequency, and a spectral index. Incorporating these additional parameters, we compute the Bayes factor (lnB_{!pg}^{pg}) comparing our p-g model to a standard one. We find that the observed signal is consistent with waveform models that neglect p-g effects, with lnB_{!pg}^{pg}=0.03_{-0.58}^{+0.70} (maximum a posteriori and 90% credible region). By injecting simulated signals that do not include p-g effects and recovering them with the p-g model, we show that there is a ≃50% probability of obtaining similar lnB_{!pg}^{pg} even when p-g effects are absent. We find that the p-g amplitude for 1.4 M_{⊙} neutron stars is constrained to less than a few tenths of the theoretical maximum, with maxima a posteriori near one-tenth this maximum and p-g saturation frequency ∼70 Hz. This suggests that there are less than a few hundred excited modes, assuming they all saturate by wave breaking. For comparison, theoretical upper bounds suggest ≲10^{3} modes saturate by wave breaking. Thus, the measured constraints only rule out extreme values of the p-g parameters. They also imply that the instability dissipates ≲10^{51} erg over the entire inspiral, i.e., less than a few percent of the energy radiated as gravitational waves.

Abstract
We present the first Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo search for ultracompact binary systems with component masses between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙} using data taken between September 12, 2015 and January 19, 2016. We find no viable gravitational wave candidates. Our null result constrains the coalescence rate of monochromatic (delta function) distributions of nonspinning (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.0×10^{6} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the coalescence rate of a similar distribution of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) ultracompact binaries to be less than 1.9×10^{4} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} (at 90% confidence). Neither black holes nor neutron stars are expected to form below ∼1 M_{⊙} through conventional stellar evolution, though it has been proposed that similarly low mass black holes could be formed primordially through density fluctuations in the early Universe and contribute to the dark matter density. The interpretation of our constraints in the primordial black hole dark matter paradigm is highly model dependent; however, under a particular primordial black hole binary formation scenario we constrain monochromatic primordial black hole populations of 0.2 M_{⊙} to be less than 33% of the total dark matter density and monochromatic populations of 1.0 M_{⊙} to be less than 5% of the dark matter density. The latter strengthens the presently placed bounds from microlensing surveys of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) provided by the MACHO and EROS Collaborations.

Abstract
On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were neutron stars that are described by the same equation of state and have spins within the range observed in Galactic binary neutron stars. Our analysis employs two methods: the use of equation-of-state-insensitive relations between various macroscopic properties of the neutron stars and the use of an efficient parametrization of the defining function p(ρ) of the equation of state itself. From the LIGO and Virgo data alone and the first method, we measure the two neutron star radii as R_{1}=10.8_{-1.7}^{+2.0} km for the heavier star and R_{2}=10.7_{-1.5}^{+2.1} km for the lighter star at the 90% credible level. If we additionally require that the equation of state supports neutron stars with masses larger than 1.97 M_{⊙} as required from electromagnetic observations and employ the equation-of-state parametrization, we further constrain R_{1}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km and R_{2}=11.9_{-1.4}^{+1.4} km at the 90% credible level. Finally, we obtain constraints on p(ρ) at supranuclear densities, with pressure at twice nuclear saturation density measured at 3.5_{-1.7}^{+2.7}×10^{34} dyn cm^{-2} at the 90% level.

Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Ω_{0}^{T}<5.58×10^{-8}, Ω_{0}^{V}<6.35×10^{-8}, and Ω_{0}^{S}<1.08×10^{-7} at a reference frequency f_{0}=25 Hz.

Abstract
The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the event GW170817, the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star component will add to the contribution from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude Ω_{GW}(f=25 Hz)=1.8_{-1.3}^{+2.7}×10^{-9} with 90% confidence, compared with Ω_{GW}(f=25 Hz)=1.1_{-0.7}^{+1.2}×10^{-9} from binary black holes alone. Assuming the most probable rate for compact binary mergers, we find that the total background may be detectable with a signal-to-noise-ratio of 3 after 40 months of total observation time, based on the expected timeline for Advanced LIGO and Virgo to reach their design sensitivity.

Abstract
On August 17, 2017 at 12∶41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0×10^{4} years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M_{⊙}, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M_{⊙}, with the total mass of the system 2.74_{-0.01}^{+0.04}M_{⊙}. The source was localized within a sky region of 28 deg^{2} (90% probability) and had a luminosity distance of 40_{-14}^{+8} Mpc, the closest and most precisely localized gravitational-wave signal yet. The association with the γ-ray burst GRB 170817A, detected by Fermi-GBM 1.7 s after the coalescence, corroborates the hypothesis of a neutron star merger and provides the first direct evidence of a link between these mergers and short γ-ray bursts. Subsequent identification of transient counterparts across the electromagnetic spectrum in the same location further supports the interpretation of this event as a neutron star merger. This unprecedented joint gravitational and electromagnetic observation provides insight into astrophysics, dense matter, gravitation, and cosmology.

Abstract
On August 14, 2017 at 10∶30:43 UTC, the Advanced Virgo detector and the two Advanced LIGO detectors coherently observed a transient gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar mass black holes, with a false-alarm rate of ≲1 in 27 000 years. The signal was observed with a three-detector network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 18. The inferred masses of the initial black holes are 30.5_{-3.0}^{+5.7}M_{⊙} and 25.3_{-4.2}^{+2.8}M_{⊙} (at the 90% credible level). The luminosity distance of the source is 540_{-210}^{+130} Mpc, corresponding to a redshift of z=0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.03}. A network of three detectors improves the sky localization of the source, reducing the area of the 90% credible region from 1160 deg^{2} using only the two LIGO detectors to 60 deg^{2} using all three detectors. For the first time, we can test the nature of gravitational-wave polarizations from the antenna response of the LIGO-Virgo network, thus enabling a new class of phenomenological tests of gravity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We explore preterm-related neonatal deaths using the WHO application of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) to deaths during the perinatal period: ICD-PM as an informative case study, where ICD-PM can improve data use to guide clinical practice and programmatic decision-making. DESIGN Retrospective application of ICD-PM. SETTING South Africa, and the UK. POPULATION Perinatal death databases. METHODS Descriptive analysis of neonatal deaths and maternal conditions present. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Causes of preterm neonatal mortality and associated maternal conditions. RESULTS We included 98 term and 173 preterm early neonatal deaths from South Africa, and 956 term and 3248 preterm neonatal deaths from the UK. In the South African data set, the main causes of death were respiratory/cardiovascular disorders (34.7%), low birthweight/prematurity (29.2%), and disorders of cerebral status (25.5%). Amongst preterm deaths, low birthweight/prematurity (43.9%) and respiratory/cardiovascular disorders (32.4%) were the leading causes. In the data set from the UK, the leading causes of death were low birthweight/prematurity (31.6%), congenital abnormalities (27.4%), and deaths of unspecified cause (26.1%). In the preterm deaths, the leading causes were low birthweight/prematurity (40.9%) and deaths of unspecified cause (29.6%). In South Africa, 61% of preterm deaths resulted from the maternal condition of preterm spontaneous labour. Among the preterm deaths in the data set from the UK, no maternal condition was present in 36%, followed by complications of placenta, cord, and membranes (23%), and other complications of labour and delivery (22%). CONCLUSIONS ICD-PM can be used to appraise the maternal and newborn conditions contributing to preterm deaths, and can inform practice. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT ICD-PM can be used to appraise maternal and newborn contributors to preterm deaths to improve quality of care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To apply the World Health Organization (WHO) Application of the International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD-10) to deaths during the perinatal period: ICD-Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM) to existing perinatal death databases. DESIGN Retrospective application of ICD-PM. SETTING South Africa, UK. POPULATION Perinatal death databases. METHODS Deaths were grouped according to timing of death and then by the ICD-PM cause of death. The main maternal condition at the time of perinatal death was assigned to each case. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Causes of perinatal mortality, associated maternal conditions. RESULTS In South Africa 344/689 (50%) deaths occurred antepartum, 11% (n = 74) intrapartum and 39% (n = 271) in the early neonatal period. In the UK 4377/9067 (48.3%) deaths occurred antepartum, with 457 (5%) intrapartum and 4233 (46.7%) in the neonatal period. Antepartum deaths were due to unspecified causes (59%), chromosomal abnormalities (21%) or problems related to fetal growth (14%). Intrapartum deaths followed acute intrapartum events (69%); neonatal deaths followed consequences of low birthweight/ prematurity (31%), chromosomal abnormalities (26%), or unspecified causes in healthy mothers (25%). Mothers were often healthy; 53%, 38% and 45% in the antepartum, intrapartum and neonatal death groups, respectively. Where there was a maternal condition, it was most often maternal medical conditions, and complications of placenta, cord and membranes. CONCLUSIONS The ICD-PM can be a globally applicable perinatal death classification system that emphasises the need for a focus on the mother-baby dyad as we move beyond 2015. We compare the capture of maternal conditions in the existing ICD-PM with the maternal codes from the WHO application of ICD-10 to deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (ICD Maternal Mortality, ICD-MM) to explore potential benefits in the quality of data received. DESIGN Retrospective application of ICD-PM. SETTING South Africa and the UK. POPULATION Perinatal death databases. METHODS The maternal conditions were classified using the ICD-PM groupings for maternal condition in perinatal death, and then mapped to the ICD-MM groupings of maternal conditions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Main maternal conditions in perinatal deaths. RESULTS We reviewed 9661 perinatal deaths. The largest group (4766 cases, 49.3%) in both classifications captures deaths where there was no contributing maternal condition. Each of the other ICD-PM groups map to between three and six ICD-MM groups. If the cases in each ICD-PM group are re-coded using ICD-MM, each group becomes multiple, more specific groups. For example, the 712 cases in group M4 in ICD-PM become 14 different and more specific main disease categories when the ICD-MM is applied instead. CONCLUSIONS As we move towards ICD-11, the use of the more specific, applicable, and relevant codes outlined in ICD-MM for both maternal deaths and the maternal condition at the time of a perinatal death would be preferable, and would provide important additional information about perinatal deaths. Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare and aggressive disease usually encountered in the context of primary EBV infection. In most analyzed cases, EBV has been found predominantly in T cells. We describe the novel finding of high EBV genome numbers within circulating natural killer cells in adult patients with EBV-HLH.

Abstract
We present the case of a patient who presented with small joint polyarthralgia and mild lymphocytosis. The patient was subsequently diagnosed to have plasma cell leukaemia. Skeletal survey showed bony lytic lesions in the hands and feet with no skeletal lesions elsewhere. The most common sites of bony involvement in plasma cell dyscrasia are skull, vertebrae, ribs and long bones. Although it is quite unusual for plasma cell leukaemia or myeloma to involve solely small joints of hands and feet, we suggest plasma cell dyscrasia should be kept in the differential diagnostic list for polyarthralgia in adults if usual causes are ruled out.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premature birth carries substantial neonatal morbidity and mortality. One cause, associated with preterm rupture of membranes (pROM), is often subclinical infection. Maternal antibiotic therapy might lessen infectious morbidity and delay labour, but could suppress labour without treating underlying infection. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the immediate and long-term effects of administering antibiotics to women with pROM before 37 weeks, on maternal infectious morbidity, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, and longer term childhood development. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register (January 2003) and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (The Cochrane Library, Issue 4, 2002). SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials comparing antibiotic administration with placebo that reported clinically relevant outcomes, were included. In addition, trials, in which no placebo was used, were included for the outcome of perinatal death alone. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Data were extracted from each report without blinding of either the results or the treatments that women received. Unpublished data were sought from a number of authors. MAIN RESULTS Nineteen trials involving over 6000 women and their babies were included. The use of antibiotics following pROM is associated with a statistically significant reduction in chorioamnionitis (relative risk (RR) 0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.37 to 0.86). There was a reduction in the numbers of babies born within 48 hours (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.87) and seven days of randomisation (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.71 to 0.90). The following markers of neonatal morbidity were reduced: neonatal infection (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.53 to 0.87), use of surfactant (RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.96), oxygen therapy (RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.81 to 0.96), and abnormal cerebral ultrasound scan prior to discharge from hospital (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.68 to 0.98). Co-amoxiclav was associated with an increased risk of neonatal necrotising enterocolitis (RR 4.60, 95% CI 1.98 to 10.72). REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS Antibiotic administration following pROM is associated with a delay in delivery and a reduction in major markers of neonatal morbidity. These data support the routine use of antibiotics in pPROM. The choice as to which antibiotic would be preferred is less clear as, by necessity, fewer data are available. Co-amoxiclav should be avoided in women at risk of preterm delivery because of the increased risk of neonatal necrotising enterocolitis. From the available evidence, erythromycin would seem a better choice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate resource use and costs associated with routine obstetric ultrasound and follow-up tests from both the British National Health Service and women's perspectives. METHODS Women attending Liverpool Women's Hospital (UK) in 1998 and 1999 were involved in the study. Bottom-up and top-down costings of National Health Service resources using questionnaires and diaries to record staff time associated with procedures were performed. Questionnaires were used to assess women's costs of attending for antenatal ultrasound scans. RESULTS Routine antenatal ultrasound scans at Liverpool Women's Hospital cost the National Health Service between 14 pounds sterling and 16 pounds sterling per scan. More detailed secondary scans and other follow-up procedures cost substantially more. Costs to women, their families and their employers were estimated at between 9 pounds sterling and 15 pounds sterling per scan, depending on assumptions about the opportunity costs of time when not in paid employment and costs to employers of women who were in paid employment. CONCLUSIONS Accurate estimates of costs to the National Health Service associated with routine antenatal ultrasound scanning are substantially lower than that cited in much of the literature. Costs to women are very similar to National Health Service costs. Economic evaluations should attempt to include costs to users of the service, particularly when the burden of cost is likely to shift.

Abstract
Tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes that control proliferation and apoptosis are known to play an important role in embryogenesis, second trimester fetal oocyte loss, adult ovulation, and in adult male testicular degeneration. We have examined tumour suppressor genes, oncogenes and oestrogen receptors during first trimester human gonadal differentiation to investigate their role at this crucial phase in development. Immunohistochemistry was used to localize the gene products of Bcl-2, c-erB-2, c-myc, p53, nm23 and oestrogen receptor. As gonadal development occurred at 6-12 weeks gestation, a changing pattern of expression was observed that varied in different cell types. The oestrogen receptor was not present in oogonia, spermatogonia and supporting cells during the first trimester. This study highlights the importance of oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes in first trimester gonadal development.
