Salicornia bigelovii (TORR.): UN SISTEMA MODELO PARA INCORPORARSE COMO CULTIVO AGRÍCOLA EN ZONAS ÁRIDO-DESÉRTICOS

Se define como reconversión de cultivos al cambio de producto o actividad que representa mayor rentabilidad económica y viabilidad social para el productor agrícola, al mismo tiempo que da un mejor uso del suelo, mejora la fertilidad del mismo y rompe con el ciclo biológico de plagas y enfermedades. En las zonas árido-desérticas, donde se produce el 70% de los alimentos agrícolas a nivel mundial, entre los factores adversos de tipo abiótico, se destaca el de la salinidad, el cual se agudiza conforme pasa el tiempo, mermando la producción de los cultivos convencionales. En este tipo de ambientes árido-salinos, las especies vegetales nativas son halotolerantes tolerando salinidades que varían de 2 a 55 g/L de agua. Algunas especies presentan tener una importancia agroindustrial como lo es la halófita Salicornia bigelovii, la cual puede ser utilizada para forraje, alimento humano, productos cosmetológicos, producción de biocombustibles, comprimidos a base de biomasa seca para la creación de escritorios, libreros, entre otros. La producción de Salicornia, demanda aguas salobres o agua de mar, la cual es un recurso que puede ser extraído de los litorales costeros o bien de tierras firmes continentales. El escalamiento de su producción depende de por tanto de la intensificación de nuestro conocimiento sobre diversos aspectos de su biología, fisiología, bioquímica e interacción con microorganismos benéficos que contribuyan a un mejor desarrollo y mejorada productividad de este recurso, sin alterar el medio ambiente

Evaluation of Glycosyl-Hydrolases, Phosphatases, Esterases and Proteases as Potential Biomarker for NaCl-Stress Tolerance in Solanum lycopersicum L. Varieties

Salinity stress limited the production in over 30% of irrigated crops and 7% of dryland agriculture worldwide. The objective was to evaluate the effects of NaCl-stress on the enzymatic activity in tomato. Two experiments were carried out in germination and early vegetative growth stages. The activity of proline and peroxidase of eight varieties (Missouri, Yaqui, Vita, Feroz, Rio Grande, Tropic, Ace, and Floradade) submitted to NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM de NaCl) and the semi-quantitative activity of 19 enzymes APY ZYM® were measured under a completely randomized design with four replications. Data were analyzed using univariate-multivariate analysis of variance, Tukey's HSD (p = 0.05), canonical discriminant and cluster analysis. The results showed significant differences between varieties and NaCl in proline content. Proline increased as the NaCl concentration increased. Peroxidase did no show significant differences. Eight enzymes were included within the model to properly classify the varieties and NaCl. In shoots, varieties and NaCl showed that enzymatic activity was higher in the order of alkaline-phosphatase > leucine arylamidase > acid phosphatase > naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase > n-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase > β-galactosidase, while in roots was higher in the order of alkaline-phosphatase > naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase > acid phosphatase > n-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase. Acid and alkali phosphatase, lipase, esterase, β-galactosidase, and trypsin can be a potential biomarker for NaCl-stress tolerance in tomato.

EFFECT OF QUITOMAX® ON THE INDICATORS OF GROWTH, PHENOLOGY AND YIELD OF COWPEA (Vigna unguiculata L.)

The application of biostimulant in agricultural practices is a promising alternative to the use of chemical pesticides that harm the health of man and the environment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the foliar application of the biostimulant Quitomax at concentrations of 200, 400, and 600 mg·ha-1 on some phenological phases of cowpea plants, as well as indicators of growth and agricultural yield of this legume. The sowing was done directly, in a double row with a planting frame of 0.70 x 0.40 m on a bio-fertilizer substrate and sandy soil. The application of Quitomax was carried out at the beginning of flowering. A randomized block experimental design with four replicates per treatment was used. The growth indictors, length and diameter of the pods, pods by plants, fresh pod mass and grains by pods, as well as the yield were evaluated. It was found that the highest concentration of Quitomax applied 600 mg. ha-1 produced significantly cowpea plants with higher growth and yield indicators than the rest of the treatments.

Biocontrol of Fusarium solani: Antifungal Activity of Chitosan and Induction of Defence Enzymes

In this work, the efficiency of chitosan as a biocontrol agent against Fusarium solani on tomato plants was determined and the antifungal activity and the induction of defence enzymes were evaluated. Treatments were carried out with different concentrations of chitosan (1, 2 and 3 g L-1) combined with a synthetic fungicide (carbendazim). The results showed that all chitosan treatments significantly inhibited the mycelial growth and biomass of F. solani, with the most effective results obtained with the 3 g L-1 treatment. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that chitosan causes severe structural damage to F. solani, including cell lysis and the deformation of mycelium and spores. In addition, plants treated with chitosan showed significant improvements in height, stem diameter, root dry biomass and root length compared to those treated with synthetic fungicide and the control (no chitosan application). Enzyme assays showed that chitosan significantly increased superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, indicating an increased defensive response. These results suggest that chitosan is a viable and less toxic alternative for the management of disease caused by F. solani in tomato plants, promoting both plant health and growth.

ESTADO DEL ARTE DEL CULTIVO DE TILAPIA ROJA EN LA MAYOR DE LAS ANTILLAS

La búsqueda de formas de producción animal adecuadas ha sido tema de interés en diversos fórums en el cursar de los años. Destacándose el cultivo de la tilapia roja, la cual se ha convertido en uno de los peces más comercializados en el ámbito internacional. En el presente documento, se ofrece una visión general del cultivo de tilapia roja (Oreochromis mossambicus x O. niloticus) en la isla de Cuba, abordando aspectos de la nutrición y alimentación. El archipiélago cubano es un país que posee  110.860 kilómetros cuadrados entre aguas costeras y territoriales, lo cual lo convierte en un recurso potencial para el desarrollo y cultivo de la Tilapia, la cual se destaca por su período de crecimiento relativamente más corto en relación a otros peces y por presentar alta adaptabilidad a diferentes ambientes y fuentes de alimentación siendo uno de los peces más comercializados en el ámbito internacional debido a sus características biológicas, nutricionales y organolépticas.

RESPUESTA AGRONÓMICA DE DOS VARIEDADES DE MAÍZ BLANCO (Zeas mays, L.) A LA APLICACIÓN DE QUITOMAX, AZOFERT Y ECOMIC

La aplicación de biofertilizantes y bioestimulantes a los cultivos constituye una estrategia priorizada para mejorar y preservar las condiciones físicas, químicas y biológicas de los suelos, elevar el potencial agroproductivo y sustituir importaciones. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue el de determinar la respuesta agronómica de dos variedades de maíz blanco (var. Chuco y Cariaco) a la aplicación de tres productos bioactivos. El experimento se desarrolló del 1 de abril al 26 de julio del 2016, utilizando un diseño experimental de bloque al azar con tres réplicas y cuatro tratamientos para cada variedad [T1: (semillas asperjadas con H2O), T2: (semillas embebidas en una solución de QuitoMax), T3: (Semillas tratadas con Azofert) y T4: (semillas peletizadas con una pasta formada por Ecomic y agua)]. Se realizó un análisis de varianza de clasificación doble. En los casos en que los indicadores mostraron diferencias estadísticas significativas, se utilizó la prueba de Comparación Múltiple de Medias por Duncan, para un nivel de significación del 5%. Los tres productos bioactivos superaron al tratamiento control en los indicadores del componente del rendimiento, alcanzando los máximos resultados mediante el tratamiento con Quito- Max, obteniéndose rendimientos de 2.84 y 3.2 (t.ha-1) en las variedades Chuco y Cariaco respectivamente.
