Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15  PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10  TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60  TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

A tera-electron volt afterglow from a narrow jet in an extremely bright gamma-ray burst

Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Constraints on Heavy Decaying Dark Matter from 570 Days of LHAASO Observations

The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9}  GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Occluded vein as a predictor for complications in non-infectious transvenous lead extraction

Background

Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) use is steadily increasing, with subsequent need to solve lead failure issues and device upgrades with an occluded vein. Transvenous lead extraction (TLE) has inherent risks that must be carefully weighed. Currently there is lack of conclusive data regarding many non-infectious indications.

Methods

A retrospective study on indications and outcomes of TLE for non-infectious reasons at our medical center, between the years 2011 to 2020 was performed. Occluded vein (OV) presence was compared for characteristics, extraction methods and periprocedural complications and outcomes.

Results

A total of 88 patients underwent TLE for non-infectious reasons. The majority were referred due to lead malfunction (70.5%) and CIED upgrade with an OV (25%), while 4 patients had other TLE indication (intractable pain, heart transplant, severe Tricuspid regurgitation, and irradiation). fourteen patients referred due to lead malfunction had an OV observed during venography.

The OV group (36 patients) were significantly older (65.7±14.1 vs 53.8±15.9 respectively, p=0.001) and had more comorbidities. EF was significantly lower for the OV group (27.5% vs 57.5%, p=0.001) as was longer lead dwell time (3226±2324 vs 2191±1355 days, respectively, p=0.012).

Major complications were exclusive for the OV group (16.7% vs none, p=0.02), and most minor complications occurred in the OV group as well (38.9% vs 4.1% respectively, p<0.001). Laser sheath and Mechanical tools for TLE were frequently used for OV as compared to the non-occluded group (94.4% vs 73.5% respectively, p=0.012). Procedure success was higher in the non-occluded group compared to the OV group (98% vs 83.3%, respectively, p=0.047). Despite these results, peri-procedural mortality was similar between groups.

Conclusions

Among TLE for non-infectious reasons, vein occlusion appears as a major predictor for complex TLE tools use, complications, and procedural success. Venography should be routinely performed prior to non-infectious TLE to identify high-risk patients.

XTP8 stimulates migration and invasion of gastric carcinoma through interacting with TGIF1

OBJECTIVE

To determine expression characteristics of XTP8 and TGIF1 in gastric carcinoma (GC), and the potential roles of XTP8/TGIF1 axis in influencing the progression of GC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The expression levels of XTP8 and TGIF1 in GC tissues and cells were detected. Their functions in prognosis in GC patients were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The correlation between the XTP8 level and the pathological indexes of the GC patients were analyzed. The changes in the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacities of MKN-45 and SGC-7901 cells affected by XTP8 and TGIF1 were assessed. The interaction between XTP8 and TGIF1 was determined through Dual-Luciferase reporter gene assay and rescue experiments.

RESULTS

XTP8 was upregulated in GC tissues and cells. XTP8 level was positively correlated with lymphatic and distant metastasis, as well as poor prognosis of GC patients. The silence of XTP8 attenuated proliferation, migration, and invasion capacities of MKN-45 and SGC-7901 cells. TGIF1 was the downstream gene binding to XTP8, which was downregulated in GC, and XTP8 negatively regulated the TGIF1 level in GC tissues. Importantly, the knockdown of TGIF1 could abolish the regulatory effect of XTP8 on GC cell behaviors.

CONCLUSIONS

XTP8 is upregulated in GC and is closely linked to lymphatic metastasis, distant metastasis, and poor prognosis of GC patients. Besides, it accelerates the malignant progression via negatively regulating TGIF1.

Insights into the epidemic characteristics and evolutionary history of the novel porcine circovirus type 3 in southern China

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) is a newly identified circovirus from swine in the USA, China and Poland. This novel circovirus has been associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), reproductive failure and multisystemic inflammation; moreover, PCV3 poses a potential threat to the swine industry. In this retrospective study, a phylogenetic analysis was conducted to address the epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of this novel circovirus. The total positive sample rate of PCV3 was 26.7% (76/285) and has increased gradually over the past 3 years. Of these PCV3-positive samples, 22.3% (17/76) were coinfected with PCV2. PCV3 can be detected in multiple sample types with different positive rates, and the positive rate is highest among stillborn. We also divide PCV3 into three clades (PCV3a, PCV3b and PCV3c) based on two amino acid mutations (A24V and R27K) on the cap protein in this study. In addition, the origin of PCV3 was approximately 1966 and may have originated from a bat-associated circovirus. Our results suggested that PCV3 is widely distributed in southern China and has been circulating in swine herds for nearly half a century. PCV3 has evolved into different clades caused by mutations in cap proteins; thus, further research on PCV3 epidemiology should be conducted.

Evaluating the use of cell phone messaging for community Ebola syndromic surveillance in high risked settings in Southern Sierra Leone

BACKGROUND

Most underdeveloped countries do not meet core disease outbreak surveillance because of the lack of human resources, laboratory and infrastructural facilities. The use of cell phone technology for disease outbreak syndromic surveillance is a new phenomenon in Sierra Leone despite its successes in other developing countries like Sri Lanka. In this study we set to evaluate the effectiveness of using cell phone technology for Ebola hemorrhagic fever syndromic surveillance in a high risked community in Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using cell phone messaging (text and calls) for community Ebola hemorrhagic fever syndromic surveillance in high risked community in southern Sierra Leone.

METHOD

All cell phone syndromic surveillance data used for this study was reported as cell phone alert messages-texts and voice calls; by the Moyamba District Health Management Team for both Ebola hemorrhagic fever suspect and mortalities. We conducted a longitudinal data analysis of the monthly cumulative confirmed Ebola hemorrhagic fever cases and mortalities collected by both the traditional sentinel and community cell phone syndromic surveillance from August 2014 to October 2014.

RESULTS

A total of 129 and 49 Ebola hemorrhagic fever suspect and confirmed cases respectively were recorded using the community Ebola syndromic surveillance cell phone alert system by the Moyamba District Health Management Team in October 2014. The average number of Ebola hemorrhagic fever suspects and confirmed cases for October 2014 were 4.16 (Std.dev 3.76) and 1.58 (Std.dev 1.43) respectively. Thirty-four percent (n=76) of the community Ebola syndromic surveillance cell phone alerts that were followed-up within 24 hours reported Ebola hemorrhagic fever suspect cases while 65.92% (n=147) reported mortality.

CONCLUSION

Our study suggests some form of underreporting by the traditional sentinel Ebola hemorrhagic fever disease surveillance system in Moyamba District southern Sierra Leone for August-September 2014. Cell phone messaging technology can be effectively use as a tool for community epidemic surveillance from peripheral health care facilities to higher levels.

Fatal Canid Herpesvirus 1 Respiratory Infections in 4 Clinically Healthy Adult Dogs

Four healthy adult dogs (Golden Retrievers aged 6 years and 9 years, Dalmatian aged 13 years, and Mastiff aged 5 years) developed clinical signs of acute respiratory disease and died within 2 to 7 days of onset of clinical signs. The lungs of the 3 dogs submitted for necropsy were diffusely and severely reddened due to hyperemia and hemorrhage. Microscopic lesions in all dogs were suggestive of acute viral or toxic respiratory damage and varied from acute severe fibrinonecrotic or hemorrhagic bronchopneumonia to fibrinous or necrotizing bronchointerstitial pneumonia. Necropsied dogs also had hemorrhagic rhinitis and tracheitis with necrosis. Virus isolation, transmission electron microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction were used to confirm the presence of canid herpesvirus 1 (CaHV-1) in the lung samples of these dogs. Lung tissues were negative for influenza A virus, canine distemper virus, canine parainfluenza virus, canine respiratory coronavirus, and canine adenovirus 2. Canid herpesvirus 1 has been isolated from cases of acute infectious respiratory disease in dogs but has only rarely been associated with fatal primary viral pneumonia in adult dogs. The cases in the current report document lesions observed in association with CaHV-1 in 4 cases of fatal canine herpesvirus pneumonia in adult dogs.

[Experimental study on hemoperfusion to remove CIC in blood of rabbit with an affinity adsorbent II]

In this study a rabbitmodel of high concentration cycle immune complex (CIC) was established, and then an experimental hemoperfusion using AA3 Adsor-bent was performed the effect of hemoperfusion to remove CIC in blood and the influence of AA3 on hemocompatibility and proteins were observed.

[The properties of new affinity adsorbent for adsorbing the cycle immune complex in blood]

This study was designed to select an affinity adsorbent from 5 kinds of adsorbents available. The adsorbent AA3 was found being specific to the adsorption of pathologic cycle immune complex (CIC). The physical properties such as specific surface area, proe volume and average pore diameter of adsorbents were determined. A discussion on the factors that affect the adsorption of CIC is also presented in this paper.

[A study of affinity adsorbent AA-3 in cleaning the cycle immune complex of rabbits]

Conducted a hemoperfusion (HP) experiment on AA-3 for the treatment of type III allergy in rabbits and observed the change of Cycle Immune Complex (CLC) and the blood mutual adaptation (BMA). The results showed that the CIC level was 195.52 +/- 12.79 ug/ml before adsorption and 119.01 +/- 10.4 micrograms/ml after ansorption, the adsorption rate being (39.13 +/- 2.19)%. The experiment also demonstrated satisfactory BMA during AA-3 HP.

[A kinetic study of hepatitis B virus pre-C gene mutation]

The point mutation in the precore region of hepatitis B viral genome (nt83) was tested with the method of mispairing PCR-RFLP in 54 chronic hepatitis B patients all confirmed by liver biopsy. The over all detection rate of pre-C mutation was 66.7% and the detection rate of pre-C mutation in chronic active hepatitis patients was as high as 80.0%, being significantly higher than that in chronic persistent hepatitis (46.7%). The detection rate of pre-C mutation was 41.2% in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) positive group and 63.3% in anti-HBe(+) group respectively. The detection rate in anti-HBe(+) patients with normal alanine transaminase activity was as high as 82.4%. During the period of follow up it was found that pre-C mutation may appear and disappear or may persist continually. The results suggested that pre-C mutation was extremely common in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The coexistence of the mutant type and wild type in the patients may be considered as the natural course of HBV chronic infection. Further study on the cause and effect relation between pre-C mutation and genesis of chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis is urgently needed.
