Abstract
Fish species are important for various purposes including aquaculture stock and display animals, but there are significant gaps in the medical knowledge regarding pharmacological parameters and effective pain management. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been studied in few teleost species and with several administration routes. However, these species were typically freshwater or euryhaline fish, and evaluation in marine species is lacking. The pharmacokinetic properties of meloxicam were determined in nine adult China rockfish (Sebastes nebulosus), presumed healthy based on physical examination and benign medical histories. Based on a pilot study, China rockfish were given 1 mg/kg meloxicam via IM injection in the epaxial musculature, and, after a 48-h washout period, 1 mg/kg meloxicam was given by PO gavage. Blood samples were collected from the caudal vein at baseline and at nine time intervals over a 48-h time period following administration of meloxicam. Plasma meloxicam concentrations were determined by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography, and noncompartmental analysis was performed. The mean peak plasma concentration after IM injection was 4.9 µg/ml, and the mean terminal half-life was 5.0 h. The mean peak plasma concentration after PO administration was 0.07 µg/ml. Based on these findings, IM injected meloxicam reaches plasma levels consistent with therapeutic concentrations in select mammals, and peak levels were maintained for ≤12 h. Single-dose PO administration failed to achieve similar concentrations, and clinical practicality is unknown. Further studies evaluating NSAID multidose regimes and their pharmacodynamic effects may provide additional dosing information.

Abstract
A 7-month-old, male Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), housed in an outdoor exhibit, developed acute neurologic signs that progressed to death over 2 days. On gross examination, the bird had congested, edematous lungs, and cerebellar hemorrhage. Histologic examination identified granulomatous pneumonia and encephalitis, with thrombosis and eosinophilic, branching fungal hyphae that had invaded the meningeal vessel walls. Polymerase chain reaction identified the fungus in the brain as Rhizomucor pusillus, an uncommon cause of mucormycosis. This organism has previously been reported in respiratory, skeletal, and sino-orbital lesions of avian species. This clinical report describes meningoencephalitis associated with Rhizomucor pusillus in a penguin.

Abstract

Abstract
SummaryPathogenesis of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) is closely associated with alterations of the vascular system. Among the virus families causing VHF, filoviruses (Marburg and Ebola) are the most fatal, and will be focused on here. After entering the body, Ebola primarily targets monocytes/ macrophages and dendritic cells. Infected dendritic cells are largely impaired in their activation potency, likely contributing to the immune suppression that occurs during filovirus infection. Monocytes/macrophages, however, immediately activate after viral contact and release reasonable amounts of cytokines that target the vascular system, particularly the endothelial cells. Some underlying molecular mechanisms such as alteration of the vascular endothelial cadherin/catenin complex, tyrosine phosphorylation, expression of cell adhesion molecules, tissue factor and the effect of soluble viral proteins released from infected cells to the blood stream will be discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamin, 5-HT) is an indolamine platelet agonist, biochemically derived from tryptophan. 5-HT is secreted from the enterochromaffin cells into the gastrointestinal tract and blood. Blood 5-HT has been proposed to regulate hemostasis by acting as a vasoconstrictor and by triggering platelet signaling through 5-HT receptor 2A (5HTR2A). Although platelets do not synthetize 5-HT, they take 5-HT up from the blood and store it in their dense granules which are secreted upon platelet activation. OBJECTIVE To identify the molecular composite of the 5-HT uptake system in platelets and elucidate the role of platelet released 5-HT in thrombosis and ischemic stroke. METHODS 5-HT transporter knockout mice (5Htt-/-) were analyzed in different in vitro and in vivo assays and in a model of ischemic stroke. RESULTS In 5Htt-/- platelets, 5-HT uptake from the blood was completely abolished and agonist-induced Ca2+ influx through store operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), integrin activation, degranulation and aggregation responses to glycoprotein VI (GPVI) and C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2) were reduced. These observed in vitro defects in 5Htt-/- platelets could be normalized by the addition of exogenous 5-HT. Moreover, reduced 5-HT levels in the plasma, an increased bleeding time and the formation of unstable thrombi were observed ex vivo under flow and in vivo in the abdominal aorta and carotid artery of 5Htt-/- mice. Surprisingly, in the transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) model of ischemic stroke 5Htt-/- mice showed nearly normal infarct volume and the neurological outcome was comparable to control mice. CONCLUSION Although secreted platelet 5-HT does not appear to play a crucial role in the development of reperfusion injury after stroke, it is essential to amplify the second phase of platelet activation through SOCE and plays an important role in thrombus stabilization.

Abstract
Several studies in clinical neuroscience have focused on the analysis of expression of emotions, identification of emotions and experience of emotions. These empirical studies produced certain insights into emotional competency in different mental diseases, most of them in schizophrenia. The current article gives a description of the scientific data about alterations in emotional competency in several mental diseases (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and borderline diseases) and links the data, if possible, with clinical relevance with a special focus on emotional competency in prodromal schizophrenia.

Abstract
Bacteria of many species are able to invade and colonize solid tumours in mice. We have focused on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. Detailed analysis revealed that such tumour-invading Salmonella form biofilms, thus providing a versatile in vivo test system for studying bacterial phenotypes and host-pathogen interactions. It appears that biofilm formation by S. typhimurium is induced as a defence against the immune system of the host, and in particular against neutrophils. Further, we extended our work to the clinically more relevant biofilm infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The induction of P. aeruginosa biofilms in neoplastic tissue appears to be elicited as a reaction against the immune system. Reconstitution experiments reveal that T cells are responsible for biofilm induction. Isogenic mutants that are no longer able to form biofilms can be used for comparison studies to determine antimicrobial resistance, especially therapeutic efficacy against P. aeruginosa located in biofilms.

Effect of short-term scrotal hyperthermia on spermatological parameters, testicular blood flow and gonadal tissue in dogs. Reprod Domest Anim 2014; 49:145-57. Abstract
The objective was to assess the effect of a short-term scrotal hyperthermia in dogs on quantitative and qualitative ejaculate parameters, testicular blood flow and testicular and epididymal histology. After a control period, the scrotum of seven normospermic adult beagle dogs was insulated with a self-made suspensory for 48 h. Nine weeks later, two animals were castrated, while in five animals, scrotal hyperthermia was repeated. Dogs were castrated either 10 or 40 days thereafter. In each phase of scrotal insulation, average scrotal surface temperature increased by 3.0°C. Semen was collected twice weekly throughout the experiment. Total sperm count did not change after the first hyperthermia, but it slightly decreased after the second (p < 0.05). Profiles of sperm morphology and velocity parameters (CASA) rather indicated subtle physiological variations in sperm quality than effects of a local heat stress. Chromatin stability of ejaculated spermatozoa as indicated by SCSA remained constant throughout the experiment. Perfusion characteristics of the gonads, that is, systolic peak velocity, pulsatility and resistance index at the marginal location of the testicular artery, did not change due to hyperthermia (p > 0.05). Histological examination of excised testes and epididymides for apoptotic (TUNEL and activated caspase-3) and proliferating cells (Ki-67 antigen) indicated only marginal effects of scrotal insulation on tissue morphology. In conclusion, a mild short-term scrotal hyperthermia in dogs does not cause substantial changes in sperm quantity and quality. In contrast to other species, canine testes and epididymides may have a higher competence to compensate such thermal stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Eppendorf Schizophrenia Inventory (ESI-K) is a self-assessment procedure which can now be considered as the standard procedure in the diagnostics of schizophrenia. It has been evaluated in many studies and is widely used in research and clinical treatment. In contrast little is known about the psychometric characteristics of the short form of the ESI (ESI-K) which was designed in particular for prospective descriptive courses. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ESI-K was completed for 40 patients with schizophrenia undergoing complete inpatient psychiatric treatment together with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) form and the Nurses' Observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE). Of the patients 31 participated in a total of 4 measurements at 1-week intervals. RESULTS The reliability (Cronbachs α) of the ESI-K was high at all measurement time points and was comparable to the reliability of the standard version. The reliability of the PANSS was roughly the same level but that of the NOSIE was poor. The ESI-K correlated in particular with cognitive syndrome and the positive syndrome of the PANSS. All four instruments showed a decrease in scores over the observational time period which indicated a decline in the psychopathological symptoms. CONCLUSIONS The ESI-K is a valid time-saving procedure for documentation of the course of symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. It reflects clinically relevant aspects from the spectrum of psychotic symptoms.

Abstract
In two pig abattoirs of different slaughter capacities, the stunning efficacy of CO2 on finishing pigs with and without pneumonic lesions (observed post mortem) was reflected against the corneal-reflex and blood parameters (blood pH, pCO2 and pO2) from individual finishers. Stunning duration was 120 s (abattoir A) and 90 s (abattoir B), respectively. Pneumonia in finisher pigs is frequently observed during post mortem inspection, which may raise concerns about a delay of unconsciousness because of hampered gas exchange in the lungs. The aim of this study was to examine possible pneumonia consequences for stunning efficacy under commercial conditions. For that, corneal reflex, O2 and CO2 partial pressure in the blood as well as blood pH were measured in 2650 finishers from abattoir A and 2100 from abattoir B. The partial pressure of O2 after stunning accounted to about 3 kPa, the partial pressure of CO2 was found at levels of about 24 kPa in abattoir A (after 120 s CO2 exposure) and 17.5 kPa in abattoir B (after 90 s CO2 exposure). In abattoir A, the blood pH was at 6.9, and at 7.0 in abattoir B. The corneal reflex was observed in 6.2% of pigs in abattoir A and 17.1% of pigs in abattoir B. A correlation between pneumonic lesions and blood status was not observed. However, for some individual farms, a significant correlation between pneumonia and corneal reflex was observed.

SU-E-I-114: Clinical Ultrasound Transducer Degradation Effects on the Accuracy of Spectral Doppler Velocity Measurements. Med Phys 2012; 39:3651. Abstract
PURPOSE Ultrasound Doppler velocity measurements are routinely used to determine the severity of a stenosis in the carotid, renal or peripheral arteries. The objective of this study is to investigate and demonstrate the relationship between Doppler velocity measurements and transducer degradation conditions encountered in a clinical environment. METHODS Assessing transducer performance was accomplished using the First Call aPerio Test System transducer analyzer (Sonora Medical Systems, Longmont, CO). This system was used to conduct 1,145 semi-annual transducer assessments at 7 clinical sites from September 2007 to February 2012 as part of a comprehensive quality control program. The results were evaluated to determine the degree of transducer degradation encountered in the clinical environment. A Siemens Acuson S2000 (Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany) ultrasound system was employed with the 1425A LE Doppler Flow System (Gammex, Middleton, WI) to determine Doppler velocity measurements. A transducer fixation device was fabricated to provide accurate, repeatable velocity measurements. Transducers with the most severe degradation were evaluated by comparing velocity measurements to those without defects. Using several matched transducer pairs, simulated failure modes were tested. The Doppler measured time-average mean (TAMn) and time-average maximum (TAMx) velocities were obtained and reported. RESULTS This investigation found that 4.5% of the transducers surveyed during this 5-year period of time failed at least one acceptance criteria. Many (346 or 30%) had at least one defect. Typical findings include dead elements, lens delamination, wire cuts, and capacitance shorts. Only the most severe transducer defects and degradation conditions resulted in a noticeable deviation in the velocity measurements. Simulated transducer degradation testing confirmed this finding. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between Doppler velocity measurements and transducer degradation conditions is limited, becoming significant for only the most severe degradation conditions. Based on our experience, this level of transducer degradation is rarely encountered in the clinical environment.

[Clinical signs, diagnostic approach and therapy for the so-called ovarian remnant syndrome in the bitch]. TIERARZTLICHE PRAXIS. AUSGABE K, KLEINTIERE/HEIMTIERE 2012; 40:35-43. Abstract
The ovarian remnant syndrome arises as a consequence of incomplete ovariectomy or ovariohysterectomy. Remnant ovarian tissue which has been left mostly unintentionally in the bitch may show endocrine activity a few weeks to several years after surgery, provoking a variety of clinical signs. The majority of affected bitches return to heat, in other cases signs of pseudopregnancy and endometritis may be observed. Occasionally, bitches with unclear clinical signs are presented with the suspicion of an inactive ovarian remnant. The following article intends to place the origin of the ovarian remnant syndrome into a factual context regarding the responsibility of the veterinarian and to demonstrate a reasonable diagnostic procedure according to the respective clinical signs. In this regard, the clinical-gynaecological examination, including vaginal cytology, must receive high priority, with the addition of progesterone analysis in peripheral blood plasma or serum if required. Using these combined diagnostic tools, ovarian remnants in stages of endocrine activity (follicular and luteal phases as well as cystic or tumourous ovarian tissue) can be easily unequivocally diagnosed. The application of a GnRH-stimulation test is only reasonable in bitches in which clinical signs are missing. In this context, the usefulness of semi-quantitative LH-assays is also discussed.

Abstract
For 80 years the infectivity of salmonid whirling disease has eluded discovery. New findings now show that this myxosporean disease of fish is initiated by what is regarded as an actinosporean produced in a tubificid oligochaete. Experimental results provide evidence that, instead of being considered as representatives of separate classes in the phylum Myxozoa, the myxosporean and actinosporean are alternating life forms of a single organism.

Abstract
A virus designated EV-2 has been isolated from external tumor tissue and internal organs of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) with stomatopapilloma. It contains RNA and is ether, acid, and temperature labile above 4 degrees C, and concentrated preparations agglutinate chicken and sheep erythrocytes. The addition of actinomycin D during the first 2.75 h of infection inhibits viral replication. As determined in sucrose gradients, the buoyant density of the virus is 1.19 g/cm(3). EV-2 has a moderately pleomorphic spherical morphology; its diameter ranges from 80 to 140 nm. The virion has narrow, regularly spaced surface projections about 10 nm long. Replication in FHM cells at 15 degrees C shows new infectivity appearing at 10 h postinfection and reaching a plateau at 20 h. Cytopathic effects consist of cell fusion, syncytia, and irregularly rounded cell masses. Viral antigen was detected in the cytoplasm of infected cells by specific immunofluorescence.

Evidence that CT694 is a novel Chlamydia trachomatis T3S substrate capable of functioning during invasion or early cycle development. Mol Microbiol 2009; 72:1423-37. Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular parasite, occupies a membrane-bound vacuole throughout development and is capable of manipulating the eukaryotic host by translocating effector molecules via a type III secretion system (T3SS). The infectious chlamydial elementary body (EB) is metabolically inactive yet possesses a functional T3S apparatus capable of translocating effector proteins into the host cell to facilitate invasion and other early cycle events. We present evidence here that the C. trachomatis protein CT694 represents an early cycle-associated effector protein. CT694 is secreted by the Yersinia T3SS and immunodetection studies of infected HeLa cultures indicate that CT694-specific signal accumulates directly adjacent to, but not completely overlapping with EBs during invasion. Yeast two-hybrid analyses revealed an interaction of CT694 with the repeat region and C-terminus of human AHNAK. Immunolocalization studies of CT694 ectopically expressed in HeLa cells were consistent with an interaction with endogenous AHNAK. Additionally, expression of CT694 in HeLa cells resulted in alterations in the detection of stress fibres that correlated with the ability of CT694 to interact with AHNAK. These data indicate that CT694 is a novel T3S-dependent substrate unique to C. trachomatis, and that its interaction with host proteins such as AHNAK may be important for aspects of invasion or development particular to this species.

Abstract
Pathogenesis of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) is closely associated with alterations of the vascular system. Among the virus families causing VHF, filoviruses (Marburg and Ebola) are the most fatal, and will be focused on here. After entering the body, Ebola primarily targets monocytes/macrophages and dendritic cells.
