Abstract
Introduction: The space environment astronauts experience during space missions consists of multiple environmental challenges, including microgravity. In this study, we assessed the behavioral and cognitive performances of male Fisher rats 2 months after sham irradiation or total body irradiation with photons in the absence or presence of simulated microgravity. We analyzed the plasma collected 9 months after sham irradiation or total body irradiation for distinct alterations in metabolic pathways and to determine whether changes to metabolic measures were associated with specific behavioral and cognitive measures. Methods: A total of 344 male Fischer rats were irradiated with photons (6 MeV; 3, 8, or 10 Gy) in the absence or presence of simulated weightlessness achieved using hindlimb unloading (HU). To identify potential plasma biomarkers of photon radiation exposure or the HU condition for behavioral or cognitive performance, we performed regression analyses. Results: The behavioral effects of HU on activity levels in an open field, measures of anxiety in an elevated plus maze, and anhedonia in the M&M consumption test were more pronounced than those of photon irradiation. Phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan metabolism, and phenylalanine metabolism and biosynthesis showed very strong pathway changes, following photon irradiation and HU in animals irradiated with 3 Gy. Here, 29 out of 101 plasma metabolites were associated with 1 out of 13 behavioral measures. In the absence of HU, 22 metabolites were related to behavioral and cognitive measures. In HU animals that were sham-irradiated or irradiated with 8 Gy, one metabolite was related to behavioral and cognitive measures. In HU animals irradiated with 3 Gy, six metabolites were related to behavioral and cognitive measures. Discussion: These data suggest that it will be possible to develop stable plasma biomarkers of behavioral and cognitive performance, following environmental challenges like HU and radiation exposure.

Abstract
Centella asiatica (Centella) is a traditional botanical medicine that shows promise in treating dementia based on behavioral alterations seen in animal models of aging and cognitive dysfunction. In order to determine if Centella could similarly improve cognitive function and reduce disease burden in multiple sclerosis (MS), we tested its effects in the neuroinflammatory experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS. In two independent experiments, C57BL/6J mice were treated following induction of EAE with either a standardized water extract of Centella (CAW) or placebo for 2 weeks. At the dosing schedule and concentrations tested, CAW did not improve behavioral performance, EAE motor disability, or degrees of demyelination. However, CAW-treated mice demonstrated increases in nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 and other antioxidant response element genes, and increases in mitochondrial respiratory activity. Caw also decreased spinal cord inflammation. Our findings indicate that CAW can increase antioxidant gene expression and mitochondrial respiratory activity in mice with EAE, supporting investigation of the clinical effects of CAW in people with MS.

Abstract
Plasma apolipoprotein E levels were previously associated with the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), levels of cerebrospinal fluid AD biomarkers, cognition and imaging brain measures. Outside the brain, the liver is the primary source of apoE and liver transplantation studies have demonstrated that liver-derived apoE does not cross the blood-brain-barrier. How hepatic apoE may be implicated in behavioral and cognitive performance is not clear. In the current study, we behaviorally tested FRGN mice with humanized liver harboring the ε3/ε3 genotype (E3-human liver (HL)) and compared their behavioral and cognitive performance with that of age-matched ε3/ε3 targeted replacement (E3-TR) mice, the latter produces human apoE3 throughout the body whereas the E3-HL mice endogenously produce human apoE3 only in the liver. We also compared the liver weights and plasma apoE levels, and assessed whether plasma apoE levels were correlated with behavioral or cognitive measures in both models. E3-HL were more active but performed cognitively worse than E3-TR mice. E3-HL mice moved more in the open field containing objects, showed higher activity levels in the Y maze, showed higher activity levels during the baseline period in the fear conditioning test than E3-TR mice, and swam faster than E3-TR mice during training to locate the visible platform in the water maze. However, E3-HL mice showed reduced spatial memory retention in the water maze and reduced fear learning and contextual and cued fear memory than E3-TR mice. Liver weights were greater in E3-HL than E3-TR mice and sex-dependent only in the latter model. Plasma apoE3 levels were similar to those found in humans and comparable in female and male E3-TR mice but higher in female E3-HL mice. Finally, we found correlations between plasma apoE levels and behavioral and cognitive measures which were predominantly model-dependent. Our study demonstrates mouse-model dependent associations between plasma apoE levels, behavior and cognition in an 'AD-neutral' setting and suggests that a humanized liver might be sufficient to induce mouse behavioral and cognitive phenotypes.

Abstract
Tight regulation of immediate early gene (IEG) expression is important for synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Recent work has suggested that DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) may have an adaptive role in post-mitotic cells to induce IEG expression. Physiological activity in cultured neurons as well as behavioral training leads to increased DSBs and subsequent IEG expression. Additionally, infusion of etoposide-a common cancer treatment that induces DSBs-impairs trace fear memory. Here, we assessed the effects of hippocampal infusion of 60 ng of etoposide on IEG expression, learning, and memory in 3-4 month-old C57Bl/6J mice. Etoposide altered expression of the immediate early genes cFos and Arc in the hippocampus and impaired hippocampus-dependent contextual fear memory. These data add to the growing evidence that DSBs play an important role in IEG expression, learning, and memory, opening avenues for developing novel treatment strategies for memory-related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Auditory steady state responses (ASSRs) are elicited by clicktrains or amplitude-modulated tones, which entrain auditory cortex at their specific modulation rate. Previous research has reported reductions in ASSRs at 40 Hz for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participants and first-degree relatives of people diagnosed with ASD (Mol Autism. 2011;2:11, Biol Psychiatry. 2007;62:192-197). METHODS Using a 1.5 s-long auditory clicktrain stimulus, designed to elicit an ASSR at 40 Hz, this study attempted to replicate and extend these findings. Magnetencephalography (MEG) data were collected from 18 adolescent ASD participants and 18 typically developing controls. RESULTS The ASSR localised to bilateral primary auditory regions. Regions of interest were thus defined in left and right primary auditory cortex (A1). While the transient gamma-band response (tGBR) from 0-0.1 s following presentation of the clicktrain stimulus was not different between groups, for either left or right A1, the ASD group had reduced oscillatory power at 40 Hz from 0.5 to 1.5 s post-stimulus onset, for both left and right A1. Additionally, the ASD group had reduced inter-trial coherence (phase consistency over trials) at 40 Hz from 0.64-0.82 s for right A1 and 1.04-1.22 s for left A1. LIMITATIONS In this study, we did not conduct a clinical autism assessment (e.g. the ADOS), and therefore, it remains unclear whether ASSR power and/or ITC are associated with the clinical symptoms of ASD. CONCLUSION Overall, our results support a specific reduction in ASSR oscillatory power and inter-trial coherence in ASD, rather than a generalised deficit in gamma-band responses. We argue that this could reflect a developmentally relevant reduction in non-linear neural processing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The circadian clock coordinates numerous metabolic processes to adapt physiological responses to light-dark and feeding regimens and is itself regulated by metabolic cues. The implication of the circadian clock in the regulation of energy balance and body weight is widely studied in rodents but not in humans. Here we investigated (1) whether the expression of clock genes in human adipose tissue is changed by weight loss and (2) whether these alterations are associated with metabolic parameters. SUBJECTS/METHODS Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) samples were collected before and after 8 weeks of weight loss on an 800 kcal per day hypocaloric diet (plus 200 g per day vegetables) at the same time of the day. Fifty overweight subjects who lost at least 8% weight after 8 weeks were selected for the study. The expression of 10 clock genes and key metabolic and inflammatory genes in adipose tissue was determined by quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS The expression of core clock genes PER2 and NR1D1 was increased after the weight loss. Correlations of PERIOD expression with body mass index (BMI) and serum total, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and of NR1D1 expression with total and LDL cholesterol were found that became non-significant after correction for multiple testing. Clock gene expression levels and their weight loss-induced changes tightly correlated with each other and with genes involved in fat metabolism (FASN, CPT1A, LPL, PPARG, PGC1A, ADIPOQ), energy metabolism (SIRT1), autophagy (LC3A, LC3B) and inflammatory response (NFKB1, NFKBIA, NLRP3, EMR1). CONCLUSION Clock gene expression in human SAT is regulated by body weight changes and associated with BMI, serum cholesterol levels and the expression of metabolic and inflammatory genes. Our data confirm the tight crosstalk between molecular clock and metabolic and inflammatory pathways involved in adapting adipose tissue metabolism to changes of the energy intake in humans.

Abstract
On behavioural as well as physiological levels our daily life is regulated by the circadian clock - endogenous oscillators present in the hypothalamus and in peripheral tissues - which is believed to have evolved as an adaptation to Earth rotation around the Sun and its consequent 24 h dark-light cycle. Accumulative evidence suggests that the circadian clock plays a pivotal role for energy metabolism and energy homeostasis: many hormones, enzymes and transport systems involved in the regulation of energy metabolism have been shown to display circadian rhythms in their expression, secretion and/or activity patterns. The energy metabolism, in turn, can impact on the circadian clock - a process that is called entrainment. Thus, the circadian clock and energy metabolism are intimately intertwined. So far this interplay and its implications for health have not been understood very well. For health maintenance, however, it seems to be crucial to avoid any desynchronisation between the circadian clock and energy metabolism. Form a clinical point of view this might be important for the treatment of obesity and associated disorders and may lead to new life-style approaches.

Abstract
When we perceive other people in our everyday encounters their bodies are often partially occluded. High-level visual areas are known to automatically complete partially occluded objects, as revealed by the classic “gestalt” phenomena. However, here we set out to investigate if “body gestalt” completion is “embodied” and not purely visual. Human observers might intuitively map their own body knowledge onto partially occluded others and thereby complete their “body gestalt” by means of posture and/or motor resonance. To this end we developed new stimuli showing a face and two hands that could either form a “body gestalt” or not. Our most important finding across five behavioural experiments was that body gestalt completion was not solely based on visual features like the classic gestalt phenomena. Responses were significantly faster when the observer's posture matched the configuration of face and hands shown on screen then. In this sense body gestalt completion is an embodied process, where humans intuitively use their own body knowledge to ‘fill in the gaps’ in a body stimulus. We further conclude that in our particular paradigm posture resonance was apparently more important for body gestalt completion than motor resonance—with the former being most likely mediated by proprioceptive body schema representations, while the latter by the mirror neuron system. Finally, we will also present preliminary analysis of MEG data. Our findings elucidate the mechanisms of how humans perceive others holistically and how they might implicitly align themselves in everyday social interactions to facilitate an optimal co-representation of each other.

Abstract
The nursery industry pasteurizes soil with steam and quicklime to reduce plant pathogens. The mechanism of action for quicklime is the resulting exothermic reaction that occurs when the chemical interacts with water and its ability to increase pH levels. These treatments may also reduce pathogens in a commercial poultry house. In this study, a steam sterilization cart simulated conditions used by the nursery industry to treat litter inoculated with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. A homogenized sample of litter was exposed to steam for 0, 5, 30, or 120 min. Quicklime was used at concentrations of 0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, or 10.0%. All steam treatments, with or without quicklime, significantly reduced Salmonella Typhimurium colonization by at least 3 orders of magnitude. Significant reductions were also observed in the treatments with quicklime alone. Both the steam and the quicklime treatments often reduced colonization to undetectable levels, even when samples were enriched. Therefore, we demonstrated 2 novel techniques for reducing Salmonella Typhimurium in poultry litter. Soil pasteurization potentially offers an environmentally sound means of reducing the pathogens present in used poultry litter.

Abstract
Although often incidentally found, diverticular disease of the small bowel and duodenum may generate complications and impose surgical treatment. Diagnosis of small bowel diverticulosis is difficult because the clinical picture is usually ambiguous. We report a case of diverticulosis of the whole intestine including a giant symptomatic retro-pancreatic duodenal diverticulum in a 74-year-old patient who presented with recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, weight loss and intestinal obstruction. The diagnosis was made by MRI enteroclysis and endoscopy. Open diverticulectomy with choledochostomy and insertion of a T-tube was performed and resulted in a rapid improvement of the symptoms.

The purpose was to identify the prevalence of naked amoebae in tap water in south Florida to ascertain the risk of amoebal infections of the cornea in contact lens wearers. Over the course of a 2-year period, water samples were collected from sites throughout Broward, Palm Beach, and Dade counties, Florida. The presence of amoebae in samples was based on an enrichment cultivation method appropriate for Acanthamoeba. Amoebae were identified using diagnostic features discernable by light microscopy. A total of 283 water samples were processed and amoebae were noted in 80 of these. Acanthamoeba were found on 8 occasions (2.8%). The genera Hartmannella and Vahlkampfia, rarely involved in keratitis cases, were found in 3.5% and 2.8% of samples, respectively. A total of 19 different naked amoebae were recorded and amoebae (regardless of genus) were present in 19.4% of all samples. Previous surveys in England and Korea have shown that acanthamoebae are found in 15 to 30% of tap water samples in the home and have been associated with corneal infection in contact lens wearers. The incidence of acanthamoebae infection in the USA (2.8%) has been found to be lower than that in the UK and it has been postulated that this is related to the lack of a storage water tank in the roof loft space. However, the level of treatment of municipal water is clearly not effective at killing amoebal cysts (or trophozoites) as evidenced by the high occurrence of amoebae (19.4%) in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The autosomal recessive disorder PARK6 manifests as early-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) with a particularly mild progression. PARK6 is of particular scientific interest, since it is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the mitochondrial protein kinase PINK1 and may thus serve as a model for oxidative damage in PD and in other basal ganglia disorders. Sleep disturbances are very common in PD but have not yet been reported for PARK6 patients. The present study reports on sleep of a Spanish family with PARK6. Of the 5 siblings, 3 were homozygous and severely affected, and 2 were heterozygous and clinically asymptomatic. Research questions concerned possible differences in sleep recordings between homozygote and heterozygote siblings and similarities between PARK6 and sporadic PD sleep profiles. METHOD The data from detailed clinical interviews of the patients and their bedpartners are reported and compared with polysomnographic data from second-night recordings. CONCLUSIONS All siblings had good subjective and objective sleep quality. Restless legs syndrome and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) were not observed, suggesting that sleep disturbances are not commonly found in PARK6 patients. Good sleep quality and the absence of RBD might be a useful diagnostic guide in the differential diagnosis of sporadic PD versus PARK6.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) bears clinical and neuropathologic similarities to sporadic multisystem atrophy (MSA) or Parkinson disease, in which sleep pathology is well documented. However, those clinical entities have a marked variability of the reported sleep disturbances, and their etiology is heterogeneous. In contrast, the study of SCA2 provides an opportunity to examine a molecularly homogeneous patient group, in which disease stages can be defined not only based on disease duration and ataxia scores, but also with regard to modulatory effects of mutation size. OBJECTIVE To examine the presence and progression of sleep pathology in SCA2. METHODS We analyzed eight patients with disease durations of 3 to 31 years, all with medium size SCA2 expansions (CAG 38 to 49), using clinical scores, sleep interviews, and video-polysomnography (VPSG) recordings. RESULTS Almost all patients reported good subjective sleep quality and negated incidents of REM behavior disorder (RBD). At early disease stages, however, REM without atonia in four patients' VPSG suggested subclinical RBD. This was accompanied by a consistent reduction of REM density. In three patients at later SCA2 stages, REM sleep was undetectable, whereas slow wave sleep (SWS) was markedly increased at the cost of light sleep. Periodic leg movements, apnea, or hypopnea were not prominent. CONCLUSIONS Progressive loss of dream recall in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 was found and correlated with stages of REM more than non-REM pathology in video-polysomnography. These stages correspond to the progressive atrophy from the pons, nigrostriatal projection, and locus ceruleus to the thalamus.

Abstract
The posterior inferior frontal gyrus (pIFG) and anterior inferior parietal lobule (aIPL) form the core regions of the human "mirror neuron system" that matches an observed movement onto its internal motor representation. We used event-related functional MRI to examine whether simple intransitive finger movements evoke "mirror activity" in the pIFG and aIPL. In separate sessions, participants either merely observed visuospatial stimuli or responded to them as quickly as possible with a spatially compatible finger movement. A picture of a relaxed hand with static dots on the tip of the index and little finger was continuously presented as high-level baseline. Four types of stimuli were presented in a pseudorandom order: a color change of a dot, a moving finger, a moving dot, or a simultaneous finger-dot movement. Dot movements were spatially and kinematically matched to finger movements. Participants were faster at imitating a finger movement than performing the same movement in response to a moving dot or a color change of a dot. Though imitative responses were facilitated, fMRI revealed no additional "mirror activity" in the pIFG and aIPL during the observation or imitation of finger movements as opposed to observing or responding to a moving dot. Mere observation of a finger movement alone failed to induce significant activation of the pIFG and aIPL. The lack of a signature of "mirror neuron activity" in the inferior frontoparietal cortex is presumably due to specific features of the task which may have favored stimulus-response mapping based on common spatial coding. We propose that the responsiveness of human frontoparietal mirror neuron areas to simple intransitive movements critically depends on the experimental context.

Abstract
Behavioural advantages for imitation of human movements over movements instructed by other visual stimuli are attributed to an 'action observation-execution matching' (AOEM) mechanism. Here, we demonstrate that priming/exogenous cueing with a videotaped finger movement stimulus (S1) produces specific congruency effects in reaction times (RTs) of imitative responses to a target movement (S2) at defined stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). When contrasted with a moving object at an SOA of 533 ms, only a human movement is capable of inducing an effect reminiscent of 'inhibition of return' (IOR), i.e. a significant advantage for imitation of a subsequent incongruent as compared to a congruent movement. When responses are primed by a finger movement at SOAs of 533 and 1,200 ms, inhibition of congruent or facilitation of incongruent responses, respectively, is stronger as compared to priming by a moving object. This pattern does not depend on whether S2 presents a finger movement or a moving object, thus effects cannot be attributed to visual similarity between S1 and S2. We propose that, whereas both priming by a finger movement and a moving object induces processes of spatial orienting, solely observation of a human movement activates AOEM. Thus, S1 immediately elicits an imitative response tendency. As an overt imitation of S1 is inadequate in the present setting, the response is inhibited which, in turn, modulates congruency effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Short-term benefits have been demonstrated for laparoscopic-assisted colectomy. However, minimally invasive surgery is still in an evolutionary phase. In demonstrating that robotic devices also are useful in laparoscopic colonic surgery, it is fundamental to prove that a single surgeon can perform almost the entire operation on his own. METHODS A single surgeon performed forty-one, laparoscopic-assisted, colorectal resections with the assistance of a robotic device (Automated Endoscopic System for Optimal Positioning, Computer Motion) maneuvering the laparoscope. A surgical assistant was included only for the open part of the operation. Main outcome measures were conversion rate, total operating time, and percentage of assistance by a second surgeon. RESULTS There were no intraoperative complications, one case of conversion to open surgery, and three postoperative complications. The total operating time ranged from 126 to 252 minutes. A single surgeon with the assistance of a robotic device was able to perform approximately 70 percent of an ileocecal resection, 70 percent of a right hemicolectomy, 80 percent of a sigmoid resection, and 85 percent of a anterior rectal resection without further help of a surgeon. CONCLUSIONS A single surgeon with the assistance of a computerized robotic system can complete at least two-thirds of a laparoscopic-assisted, colorectal resection on his own. The use of a robotic device in laparoscopic-assisted, colonic surgery is safe, efficient, and feasible, and will prove even more so in future. This also will result in a patient-driven demand for high-standard, minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The magnitude of surgical trauma after laparoscopic and open colonic resection was evaluated by examining postoperative serum values of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP), and granulocyte elastase (GE) for further evidence of the benefit realized with minimally invasive approaches in colonic surgery. METHODS Altogether, 42 patients with Crohn's disease (n = 20) or colon carcinomas/adenomas (n = 22) were matched by age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and Crohn's Disease Activity Index for either a laparoscopic (n = 21) or an open colonic resection (n = 21). In both groups the postoperative serum levels of IL-6, IL-10, C-RP, and granulocyte elastase were determined, as indicators of surgical stress. RESULTS Laparoscopic and open colonic resection caused a significant increase in serum IL-6, IL-10, CRP, and granulocyte elastase levels. The comparison between laparoscopic and open colonic resections, however, showed significantly lower serum IL-6, IL-10, CRP, and granulocyte elastase levels after laparoscopic colonic resection, which was most evident for IL-6 and granulocyte elastase. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that IL-6 and granulocyte elastase may be appropriated particularly to monitor surgical stress. By using these parameters, we found a significant reduction in surgical trauma after laparoscopic surgery, was compared with the open procedure. This supports the clinical findings of a clear benefit for patients undergoing laparoscopic colonic surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate recombinant human hemoglobin (rHb1.1) in patients undergoing surgery involving general anesthesia; examine rHb1.1 for toxicity, including renal dysfunction and hypertension; and measure plasma concentrations of rHb1.1 over time. DESIGN Prospective, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study. SETTING University medical center hospital. PARTICIPANTS Eighteen patients having surgery under general anesthesia. INTERVENTIONS One of 4 escalating doses of rHb1.1 or normal saline (control) was administered by continuous infusion to patients receiving general anesthesia for elective surgical procedures. Total rHb1.1 doses ranged from 4.7 to 25.6 g. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Clinical and laboratory data, including vital signs monitoring, hematology (white blood cell and reticulocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and coagulation values), renal function (serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen), hepatic function (mean and indirect bilirubin), pancreatic function (serum amylase and lipase), and antibodies (IgG and IgM) to Escherichia coli protein, were collected at specified intervals for 7 days after infusion of rHb1.1. No serious adverse events occurred. The most frequently observed clinical event occurred during the first 24 hours after infusion and was primarily associated with surgery and anesthetic administration. A slightly higher incidence of hypertension, symptoms suggestive of pyrogenicity, mildly elevated total and indirect bilirubin, and elevated pancreatic enzymes was observed in rHb1.1 treatment groups when compared with control. Hypertension resolved within 7 hours, and laboratory values returned to normal levels by day 7. CONCLUSION Although the elevations in pancreatic enzymes seen in some rHb1.1-treated patients remain unexplained, the safety profile of rHb1.1 appears to be acceptable. These results support the continued clinical evaluation and development of rHb1.1.

Abstract
A new technique for microvascular four-stitch sleeve anastomosis of arteries is described. Modifications from previously described techniques include absence of suture material within the arterial lumen, and a decreased proximal to distal artery overlap. In 40 rat arterial anastomoses, 100% patency without evidence of stenosis or early aneurysm formation was seen up to 6 weeks postoperatively by in vivo observation, arteriography and Doppler flow study. This new anastomosis was also successful in repairing two clinical cases of complete radial artery transection as evident from physical examination and doppler flow study. We believe that this new four-stitch sleeve anastomosis is faster and easier to perform and has patency and flow characteristics similar to those of the conventional end-to-end anastomosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess whether systemic proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10), acute phase proteins (C-reactive protein), or granulocyte elastase are valuable indicators for determining the degree of surgical trauma after open vs. laparoscopic-assisted resections in Crohn's disease. METHOD Eleven patients in each group (open and laparoscopic-assisted surgery) were matched for indication, surgical procedure, and Crohn's disease activity index. Serum IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum C-reactive protein was determined by immunoturbidimetric assay. Plasma granulocyte elastase was determined by immunoactivation immunoassay. Blood was sampled preoperatively, six hours after the operation, and at postoperative Days 1 to 5. RESULTS IL-4 was not detectable in any sample analyzed. Serum IL-6 and IL-10 levels peaked postoperatively in both groups without significant differences between laparoscopic-assisted (185.6 +/-54.1 pg/ml and 112.1 +/- 19.4 pg/ml, respectively; mean +/-standard error of the mean) and open surgery (431.1 +/-240.4 pg/ml and 196.7 +/- 56.5 pg/ml, respectively). Serum C-reactive protein levels also rose postoperatively, with a peak on the second day, but showed similar values after laparoscopic-assisted (107.1 +/- 12.1 mg/l) and open (128.3 +/- 17.5 mg/l) surgery. Plasma granulocyte elastase levels peaked on the first and second postoperative day and were found elevated almost throughout the five-day observation period. Comparison between the groups revealed significantly (P < 0.02) lower values after laparoscopic-assisted (Day 1, 46.5 +/- 8.9 microg/l; Day 2, 41.9 +/- 5.9 microg/l) when compared with open surgery (Day 1, 89.7 +/- 13.8 microg/l; Day 2, 91.4 +/- 14). CONCLUSIONS Serum IL-6 and IL-10 may not be ideal measures for evaluation of the degree of tissue trauma in laparoscopic-assisted and open resections in Crohn's disease, probably because of interference with disease-specific cytokine interactions. In contrast, granulocyte elastase has to be considered a strong marker discriminating the different severity of surgical trauma induced by laparoscopic-assisted vs. open resection in Crohn's disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the efficacy of a brief, manual-based group therapy for adolescents with poor anger control. A previously developed anger management treatment package of 10 to 12 sessions was condensed to a 4-session package to be given within 2 weeks. Immediate effectiveness and the transfer of skills were investigated; anger management skills not only had to be acquired, they also had to be used in the adolescents' natural social interactions. METHOD Fifty adolescent psychiatric inpatients were selected for high levels of anger and randomly assigned to treatment or control conditions. Pre- and posttreatment measures were administered to subjects and adults who rated the subjects' behaviors. RESULTS Pre/post self-report measures, as well as behavior ratings by adults, indicated that the patients who went through the anger management series exhibited significantly improved skills. CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that the intervention for adolescents was effective even though it was condensed, but it should not be further abbreviated.

Abstract
The performance of abortions at the mother's request creates special psychological problems for the physicians and nurses involved. Young, unmarried nurses seem to identify excessively with these mothers, further extending the problem. This paper details the ward staff difficulties which abortion produces. Suggestions are made for interventions which should minimize the problems.
