Abstract
Healthy sleep consists of several stages: deep sleep, light sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Here we show that these sleep stages can be characterized and distinguished by correlations of heart rates separated by n beats. Using the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) up to fourth order we find that long-range correlations reminiscent to the wake phase are present only in the REM phase. In the non-REM phases, the heart rates are uncorrelated above the typical breathing cycle time, pointing to a random regulation of the heartbeat during non-REM sleep.

Abstract
The Arabidopsis thaliana metal tolerance protein 1 (MTP1) of the cation diffusion facilitator family of membrane transport proteins can mediate the detoxification of Zn in Arabidopsis and yeast. Xenopus laevis oocytes expressing AtMTP1 accumulate more Zn than oocytes expressing the AtMTP1(D94A) mutant or water-injected oocytes. An AtMTP1-GFP fusion protein localizes to the vacuolar membrane in root and leaf cells. The analysis of Arabidopsis transformed with a promoter-GUS construct suggests that AtMTP1 is not produced throughout the plant, but primarily in the subpopulation of dividing, differentiating and expanding cells. RNA interference-mediated silencing of AtMTP1 causes Zn hypersensitivity and a reduction in Zn concentrations in vegetative plant tissues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article investigated the prevalence of peanut allergy in three cohorts of children born in the same geographical location, Isle of Wight, UK and seeks to determine whether the prevalence of peanut allergy has changed between 1994 and 2004. METHODS Three cohorts of children (age 3-4 years) born on the Isle of Wight, were assessed for peanut allergy and the outcomes compared: Cohort A: Born in 1989; reviewed at 4 years of age (n = 2181). Cohort B: Born between 1994 and 1996; reviewed between 3 and 4 years of age (n = 1273). Cohort C: Born between 2001 and 2002; reviewed at 3 years of age (n = 891). RESULTS Peanut sensitization increased significantly from 1.3% in Cohort A to 3.3% (P = 0.003) in Cohort B before falling back to 2.0% in Cohort C (P = 0.145). Similarly, clinical peanut allergy increased significantly from 0.5% in Cohort A to 1.4% (P = 0.023) in Cohort B, with a subsequent fall to 1.2% in Cohort C (P = 0.850). CONCLUSIONS Our data from three cohorts of 3- to 4-year-old children born in the same geographical area shows that peanut allergy prevalence has changed over time. Peanut sensitization and reported allergy in children born in 1994-1996 increased from 1989 but seems to have stabilized or slightly decreased since the late 1990s, although not significant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence and incidence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) and its trends in early childhood are unclear. METHODS A birth cohort born on the Isle of Wight (UK) between 2001 and 2002 was followed-up prospectively. Children were clinically examined and skin prick tested at set times and invited for food challenges when indicated. RESULTS Nine hundred and sixty-nine children were recruited and 92.9%, 88.5% and 91.9% of them respectively were assessed at 1, 2 and 3 years of age. Prevalence of sensitization to foods was 2.2%, 3.8% and 4.5% respectively at these ages. Cumulatively, 5.3% [95% confidence interval (CI): 3.9-7.1] children were sensitized to a food. Using open food challenge and a good clinical history, the cumulative incidence of FHS was 6.0% (58/969, 95% CI: 4.6-7.7). Based on double-blinded, placebo-controlled, food challenge (DBPCFC) and a good clinical history, the cumulative incidence was 5.0% (48/969, 95% CI: 3.7-6.5). There is no evidence to suggest that the incidence of FHS has increased, comparing these results with previous studies. Overall, 33.7% of parents reported a food-related problem and of these, 16.1% were diagnosed with FHS by open challenge and history and 12.9% by DBPCFC and history. Main foods implicated were milk, egg and peanut. CONCLUSIONS By the age of 3 years, 5-6% of children suffer from FHS based on food challenges and a good clinical history. There were large discrepancies between reported and diagnosed FHS. Comparing our data with a study performed in the USA more than 20 years ago, there were no significant differences in the cumulative incidence of FHS.

Abstract
The post-secretory processing of the potent insulinotropic peptide hormone, GLP-1(7-36)amide, probably involves one or more of a small group of membrane-bound ectopeptidases. Reported here, is the characterisation of the endoproteolysis of human GLP-1(7-36)amide by the recombinant human form of neutral endopeptidase (NEP) 24.11, which is one of the best characterised and widely-distributed of ectopeptidases and is involved in the processing of other peptide hormones. The products of the limited endoproteolysis were characterised by mass and primary structure following fractionation using high performance liquid chromatography. The rate of this endoproteolysis by NEP 24.11 was estimated and compared to that of GLP-1(7-36)amide-related peptides. GLP-1(7-36)amide appears to be good substrate for NEP 24.11 with most, but not all potential target bonds being cleaved. Also, the structurally-related peptides, secretin and glucagon appear to be good substrates whereas GIP and exendin-4 are very poor substrates. That the GLP-1(7-36)amide super-agonist, exendin-4 is a poor substrate for NEP 24.11 is significant for the possible use of this peptide as a prototype for the development of clinically-useful peptide agonists. Further studies should reveal whether NEP 24.11 is important for the metabolic clearance of GLP-1(7-36)amide and will be highly relevant for the attempts to realise the suggested therapeutic value of GLP-1(7-36)amide.

Abstract
The mortality rate of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) may be reduced by antiviral therapy, but early administration of the drug and therefore early diagnosis are essential. In our experience with four cases, MRI is the most sensitive noninvasive test in early diagnosis of HSE due to its high sensitivity to inflammatory increased brain water content, and it is superior to CT in localizing the pathognomonic lesions of the limbic system.

Abstract
After brain death, 32 potential organ donors were studied to determine serum and plasma concentrations of hypothalamic-pituitary hormones, thyroid hormones, and cortisol over a period of up to 80 hr. Diagnosis of brain death was established either on the basis of clinical criteria (n = 16) or by angiography (n = 16). While 78% of the organ donors developed diabetes insipidus, none of the circulating hormones of the anterior pituitary gland showed a progressive decline in concentration according to their plasma half-lives. With the exception of arginine vasopressin (AVP), no hormone concentration was found to be subnormal due to the onset of brain death. The subnormal free triiodothyronine (FT3) values in 62% of cases (median FT3 of 2.2 pmol/L within the first 24 hr) and the cortisol concentration of 6.9 micrograms/dl correlate with the frequency of similar findings in patients with severe head injuries. While the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations of 10-53 pg/ml remained constant during the study period, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and human growth hormone (hGH) concentrations showed a 12- and 35-fold increase from baseline values after 30-40 hr. These results suggest that, despite the now generally accepted criteria of brain death, there is still some residual function, and thus also perfusion of the hypothalamic-pituitary neuroendocrine system. This residual function appears to be sufficient to maintain hormonal plasma levels at least in the low reference range in most donors. Hormonal depletion in organ donors subsequent to brain death, as suggested repeatedly in the literature, could not be confirmed. The analysis of serum or plasma concentration patterns of a number of hormonal parameters following brain death does not support the rationale for a routine replacement therapy of total triiodothyronine (TT3) or cortisol to maintain endocrine homeostasis prior to organ harvest. However, dexamethasone therapy may be followed by suppression of the adrenal cortex of the organ donor. In these cases, cortisol substitution may be indicated.

Abstract
Sixteen patients with a clinical diagnosis of probable multiple system atrophy (MSA) were examined clinically by MRI and by 123I-iodobenzamide single photon emission computed tomography (IBZM-SPECT). The clinical records of another 16 patients were also analysed retrospectively. On the basis of their clinical presentation, patients were subdivided into those with prominent parkinsonism (MSA-P, n = 11) and those with prominent cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C, n = 21). Autonomic symptoms were present in all patients and preceded the onset of motor symptoms in 63% of patients. Calculated median lifetime and the median time to become wheelchair bound after onset of disease were significantly shorter for MSA-P than for MSA-C (lifetime: 4.0 v 9.1 years; wheelchair: 3.1 vs 5.0 years) suggesting a better prognosis for cerebellar patients. A significant loss of striatal dopamine receptors (below 2 SD threshold) was detected by IBZM-SPECT in 63% of the patients (56% below 2.5 SD threshold). There was no difference between patients with MSA-C and those with MSA-P in the proportion with significant receptor loss and the extent of dopamine receptor loss. Planimetric MRI evaluation showed cerebellar and brainstem atrophy in both groups. Atrophy was more pronounced in patients with MSA-C than in those with MSA-P. Pontocerebellar hyperintensities and putaminal hypointensities on T2 weighted MRI were found in both groups. Pontocerebellar signal abnormalities were more pronounced in MSA-C than in MSA-P, whereas the rating scores for area but not for intensity of putaminal abnormalities were higher in MSA-P. MRI and IBZM-SPECT provide in vivo evidence for combined basal ganglia and pontocerebellar involvement in almost all patients in this series.

Abstract
A molecular database for all clinically important Zygomycetes was constructed from nucleotide sequences from the nuclear small-subunit (18S) ribosomal DNA and domains D1 and D2 of the nuclear large-subunit (28S) ribosomal DNA. Parsimony analysis of the aligned 18S and 28S DNA sequences was used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among 42 isolates representing species of Zygomycetes reported to cause infections in humans and other animals, together with commonly cultured contaminants, with emphasis on members of the Mucorales. The molecular phylogeny provided strong support for the monophyly of the Mucorales, exclusive of Echinosporangium transversale and Mortierella spp., which are currently misclassified within the Mucorales. Micromucor ramannianus, traditionally classified within Mortierella, and Syncephalastrum racemosum represent the basal divergences within the Mucorales. Based on the 18S gene tree topology, Absidia corymbifera and Rhizomucor variabilis appear to be misplaced taxonomically. A. corymbifera is strongly supported as a sister group of the Rhizomucor miehei-Rhizomucor pusillus clade, while R. variabilis is nested within Mucor. The aligned 28S sequences were used to design 13 taxon-specific PCR primer pairs for those taxa most commonly implicated in infections. All of the primers specifically amplified DNA of the size predicted based on the DNA sequence data from the target taxa; however, they did not cross-react with phylogenetically related species. These primers have the potential to be used in a PCR assay for the rapid and accurate identification of the etiological agents of mucormycoses and entomophthoromycoses.

Abstract
When a ranking of some objects (chemicals, geographical sites, river sections, etc.) by a multicriteria analysis is of concern, then it is often difficult to find a common scale among the criteria, and therefore even the simple sorting process is performed by applying additional constraints, just to get a ranking index. However such additional constraints, often arising from normative considerations, are controversially discussed. The theory of partially ordered sets and its graphical representation (Hasse diagrams) does not need such additional information just to sort the objects. Here, the approach of using partially ordered sets is described by applying it to a battery of tests, developed by Dutka et al. In our analysis we found the following: (1) The dimension analysis of partially ordered sets suggests that, at least in the case of the 55 analyzed samples and the evaluation by the scores, developed by Dutka et al., there is a considerable redundancy with respect to ranking. The visualization of the sediment sites can be performed within a two-dimensional grid. (2) Information, obtained from the structure of the Hasse diagram: For example six classes of sediment sites have high priority, and each class exhibits a different pattern of results. (3) Loss of information, when an aggregation of test results is used in order to guarantee complete comparability among all objects. A relation between information drawn from the graphic and the uncertainty of ranking after using an aggregation is given. (4) The sensitivity analysis identifies one test as most important, namely the test for Fecal Coliforms/Escherichia coli. This means that the ranking of samples is heavily influenced by the results of this specific test.

Abstract
Field isolates and laboratory strains of Botrytis cinerea, an ascomycetous fungus causing considerable economic losses, e.g., as "grey mould" of vine, were compared for differences in ploidy level by determining their DNA content per nucleus. Strain SAS56, an ascospore line used routinely for genetic analyses, is probably polyploid, since treatment with benomyl causes a significant reduction in DNA content per nucleus. This conclusion is substantiated by the increased sensitivity of the putative haploid derivatives to mutagens (UV and EMS). Molecular analyses (RAPD) of the haploidized strains indicate a very limited degree of heterozygosis of the parent strain SAS56. Analysis of field isolates of B. cinerea showed that their DNA content per nucleus varied considerably, indicating that aneuploidy/polyploidy is a widespread phenomenon in this species. This can explain both the variability and phenotypic instability of many field isolates of this fungus and the unusual difficulties faced by researchers in recovering stable recessive laboratory mutants. Since the haploid derivatives of SAS56 resemble the parent strain in their parasitic and physiological properties they should provide a good basis for classical and molecular genetic studies.

Abstract
True fungi (Eumycota) are heterotrophic eukaryotic microorganisms encompassing ascomycetes, basidiomycetes, chytridiomycetes and zygomycetes. The natural systematics of the latter group, Zygomycota, are very poorly understood due to the lack of distinguishing morphological characters. We have determined sequences for the nuclear-encoded genes actin (act) from 82 zygomycetes representing all 54 currently recognized genera from the two zygomycetous orders Mucorales and Mortierellales. We also determined sequences for translation elongation factor EF-1alpha (tef) from 16 zygomycetes (total of 96,837 bp). Phylogenetic analysis in the context of available sequence data (total 2,062 nucleotide positions per species) revealed that current classification schemes for the mucoralean fungi are highly unnatural at the family and, to a large extent, at the genus level. The data clearly indicate a deep, ancient and distinct dichotomy of the orders Mucorales and Mortierellales, which are recognized only in some zygomycete systems. Yet at the same time the data show that two genera - Umbelopsis and Micromucor - previously placed within the Mortierellales on the basis of their weakly developed columella (a morphological structure of the sporangiophore well-developed within all Mucorales) are in fact members of the Mucorales. Phylogenetic analyses of the encoded amino acid sequences in the context of homologues from eukaryotes and archaebacterial outgroups indicate that the Eumycota studied here are a natural group but provide little or no support for the monophyly of either zygomycetes, ascomycetes or basidiomycetes. The data clearly indicate that a complete revision of zygomycete natural systematics is necessary.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate changes in hydrogen 1 magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopic findings in overt or subclinical hepatic encephalopathy (HE) after liver transplantation and to compare these changes with clinical outcomes and basal ganglia high signal intensity (BGH). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-two patients scheduled for liver transplantation and 17 healthy control subjects were examined with (1)H MR spectroscopy and standard nonenhanced MR imaging. Eight patients underwent complete MR imaging and (1)H spectroscopic examinations before liver transplantation and at 3-4-week, 12-28-week, and 10-12-month follow-up after liver transplantation. RESULTS Before liver transplantation, typical (1)H spectroscopic changes-decreased myo-inositol (mI)/creatine (Cr) and choline (Cho)/Cr ratios and an elevated glutamine and glutamate (Glx)/Cr ratio-were found in 21 patients. Eighteen patients had BGH at T1-weighted imaging. Three to 7 months after liver transplantation, the mI/Cr and Glx/Cr ratios were within the normal range in five of eight and eight of eight patients, respectively, without any residual signs of subclinical or overt HE; however, at MR imaging, seven patients still had BGH. CONCLUSION After successful liver transplantation, renormalization of HE-specific brain metabolite changes is detected at (1)H spectroscopy and precedes the disappearance of BGH. The neuropsychologic signs of subclinical or overt HE follow the changes seen at (1)H spectroscopy rather than those seen at MR imaging.

Abstract
The correlation between angiographic neovascularization, peritumoural brain oedema (PTBOe) and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), was analysed in 30 patients with intracranial meningiomas. Pre-operative angiograms were examined for the existence of either an exclusively dural tumour blush or an additionally pial tumour supply from cerebral arteries. Furthermore the presence of macroscopic tumour-neovascularization and dysplastic changes of tumour-draining cerebral veins was evaluated. VEGF expression was investigated on histological tissue samples, using immunohistochemical techniques. VEGF immunohistochemistry and neuroradiological evaluations were performed in double blind fashion. Tumour volume and the amount of oedema were calculated by computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The oedema-tumour volume ratio was defined as oedema index (OeI). Compared to VEGF-negative meningiomas, tumours with striking VEGF staining revealed a significant higher mean oedema index (OeI = 4.2 vs. OeI = 1.5; p < 0.018), and a higher oedema incidence (91.7% vs. 44.4%; p < 0.046). Equally, meningiomas with additionally tumour supply from cerebral arteries were associated with a significant higher mean OeI (OeI = 4.1 vs. OeI = 1.2; p < 0.01) and oedema incidence (94.7% vs. 20.0%; p < 0.0023) than meningiomas with exclusively tumour supply from dural arteries. All meningiomas with striking VEGF-expression were associated with vascular tumour supply from cerebral arteries, but VEGF-negative tumours only in 50% (p < 0.029). These data suggest a link between VEGF-expression, arterial tumour supply and peritumoural brain oedema. The development of tumour supply from cerebral arteries may be important for formation of meningioma-related oedema. Therefore, VEGF may represent a potent mediator in the evolution of this type of vascularization in meningiomas.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for evidence of periodic unstable orbits in the electroreceptors of the catfish. The function of these receptor organs is to sense weak external electric fields. In addition, they respond to the ambient temperature and to the ionic composition of the water. These quantities are encoded by receptors that make use of an internal oscillator operating at the level of the membrane potential. If such oscillators have three or more degrees of freedom, and at least one of which also exhibits a nonlinearity, they are potentially capable of chaotic dynamics. By detecting the existence of stable and unstable periodic orbits, we demonstrate bifurcations between noisy stable and chaotic behavior using the ambient temperature as a parameter. We suggest that the technique developed herein be regarded as an additional tool for the analysis of data in sensory biology and thus can be potentially useful in studies of functional responses to external stimuli. We speculate that the appearance of unstable orbits may be indicative of a state of heightened sensory awareness by the animal.

Abstract
In a retrospective analysis, the authors studied the pial and dural blood supplies in 74 intracranial meningiomas and quantified their associated peritumoral brain edema (PTBE). The extent and localization of pial blush in relation to the total tumor volume were determined angiographically. The amount of edema and tumor size were calculated using computerized tomography. The edema-tumor volume ratio was defined as Edema Index (EI). There were 49 meningiomas with PTBE; of those tumors, 46 were supplied by pial vessels, and three were supplied exclusively by dural vessels. Tumors without PTBE showed no pial blush. The mean EI in meningiomas with pial blush was significantly larger (EI = 3) than in meningiomas without pial supply (EI = 1.1; p < 0.0001). Meningiomas with a smaller pial supply than dural supply had a significantly smaller mean EI than tumors with a pial supply equal to or greater than the dural supply (EI = 2.9 vs. EI = 3.7; p < 0.015). In 69.9% of cases with pial blood supply, major portions of the edema were located adjacent to the tumor region supplied by pial vessels. Edema index differences among tumors of different subgroups, as defined by size or histology, were significantly related to the pial supply in each subset. Thus, pial blood supply may be associated with the development of PTBE in meningiomas.

Abstract
The role of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in the febrile and metabolic responses of rats to intraperitoneal injection of a high dose of lipopolysaccharide Injection of a high dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces a septic-shock-like state, which can be accompanied by phases of hypothermia and phases of fever. In the present study we monitored body core temperature and locomotor activity, both by remote radiotelemetry, as well as changes in food intake, body mass and water intake for 3 days after an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of a high dose of LPS (5 mg/kg) along with sterile 0.9% saline or a neutralizing form of the soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) type 1 receptor (referred to as TNF-binding protein, TNF bp). Intraperitoneal injection of LPS rapidly induced high concentrations of TNF in the plasma and peritoneal lavage fluid. TNF was undetectable in the plasma and peritoneal lavage fluid of animals co-injected with LPS and TNF bp, implying neutralization of peripheral bioactive TNF. Administration of LPS induced hypothermia by about 1.5 degrees C, which lasted for 5 h after injection. During the light-time periods of days 2 and 3 after injection, the rats developed a robust fever. Treatment with TNF bp resulted in a faster recovery from the LPS-induced hypothermia so that the rats developed a pronounced fever on the day of injection. Locomotor activity during night-time periods was suppressed in LPS-treated animals. The LPS-induced depression of night-time activity was not antagonized by co-injection of TNF bp. On day 1 after the injection of LPS, food intake reduced to virtually zero, water intake fell to about 30% of the control value and body mass dropped by 25 g (about 10% of total body mass). With the exception of body mass, these variables recovered slowly during days 2 and 3 after LPS injection, but did not reach the control values. The LPS-induced decreases in food intake, body mass and water intake were significantly attenuated by the treatment with TNF bp. These results confirm that TNF contributes significantly to the rats' responses to intraperitoneal injection of a high dose of LPS. The fact that treatment with TNF bp accelerated and improved the rats' ability to develop a febrile response supports the view that the fever is beneficial, since all other metabolic responses measured in this study were normalized more effectively in those rats that developed a faster and more pronounced increase in body temperature.

Abstract
18 patients with cerebral infections were investigated with a 1.5 Tesla-Magnetom. The results are compared to CT-findings obtained at the same time. In the majority of cases (n = 11) MR is superior to CT because it allows earlier detection of the disease, a more exact definition of the spread and a more detailed representation of complex inflammatory processes. MRI should rank first among all examination methods, especially in the determination of herpes simplex-encephalitis as it allows earlier detection and treatment of this disease.

Abstract
MRI has facilitated diagnostic assessment of the corpus callosum. Diagnostic classification of solitary or multiple lesions of the corpus callosum has not attracted much attention, although signal abnormalities are not uncommon. Our aim was to identify characteristic imaging features of lesions frequently encountered in practice. We reviewed the case histories of 59 patients with lesions shown on MRI. The nature of the lesions was based on clinical features and/or long term follow-up (ischaemic 20, Virchow-Robin spaces 3, diffuse axonal injury 7, multiple sclerosis 11, hydrocephalus 5, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis 5, Marchiafava-Bignami disease 4, lymphoma 2, glioblastoma hamartoma each 1). The location in the sagittal plane, the relationship to the borders of the corpus callosum and midline and the size were documented. The 20 ischaemic lesions were asymmetrical but adjacent to the midline; the latter was involved in new or large lesions. Diffuse axonal injury commonly resulted in large lesions, which tended to be asymmetrical; the midline and borders of the corpus callosum were always involved. Lesions in MS were small, at the lower border of the corpus callosum next to the septum pellucidum, and crossed the midline asymmetrically. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and the other perivenous inflammatory diseases caused relatively large, asymmetrical lesions. Hydrocephalus resulted in lesions of the upper part of the corpus callosum, and mostly in its posterior two thirds; they were found in the midline. Lesions in Marchiafava-Bignami disease were large, often symmetrically in the midline in the splenium and did not reach the edge of the corpus callosum.

Abstract
Entomophthoromycota is one of six major phylogenetic lineages among the former phylum Zygomycota. These early terrestrial fungi share evolutionarily ancestral characters such as coenocytic mycelium and gametangiogamy as a sexual process resulting in zygospore formation. Previous molecular studies have shown the monophyly of Entomophthoromycota, thus justifying raising the taxonomic status of these fungi to a phylum. Multi-gene phylogenies have identified five major lineages of Entomophthoromycota. In this review we provide a detailed discussion about the biology and taxonomy of these lineages: I) Basidiobolus (Basidiobolomycetes: Basidiobolaceae; primarily saprobic); II) Conidiobolus (Entomophthoromycetes, Ancylistaceae; several clades of saprobes and invertebrate pathogens), as well as three rapidly evolving entomopathogenic lineages in the family Entomophthoraceae centering around; III) Batkoa; IV) Entomophthora and allied genera; and V) the subfamily Erynioideae which includes Zoophthora and allied genera. Molecular phylogenic analysis has recently determined the relationships of several taxa that were previously unresolved based on morphology alone: Eryniopsis, Macrobiotophthora, Massospora, Strongwellsea and two as yet undescribed genera of Basidiobolaceae.

Abstract
The transport mechanism mediating brain uptake of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha has been studied. When (125)I-labeled rat TNF-alpha was used in internal carotid artery perfusions in rats, the cytokine showed transcytosis through the blood-brain barrier in intact form (permeability-surface area product 0.34 +/- 0.13 microl. min(-1). g(-1)). Uptake was inhibited by low nanomolar concentrations of unlabeled rat TNF-alpha. Human TNF-alpha, which does not interact with the p80 TNF receptor in rodents, showed no brain uptake. mRNA expression of both p60 and p80 receptors could be demonstrated in native brain microvessel preparations. These transcripts increased to 149% (p60) and 127% (p80) of control 4 h after a systemic immune stimulation (2 mg/kg bacterial endotoxin ip). Lipopolysaccharide treatment did not alter the rate of brain uptake of TNF-alpha measured between 4 and 24 h later. In conclusion, a receptor-mediated mechanism is responsible for the transcytosis of TNF-alpha. Saturable transport, requiring the p80 receptor, occurs at concentrations encountered under pathophysiological conditions and therefore constitutes a relevant mechanism of communication between the immune system and the brain.

Abstract

Cold receptors are unique in that they exhibit a diversity of action potential firing patterns as well as pronounced transients in firing rate following rapid temperature changes. These characteristics are the result of an internal oscillator operating at the level of the membrane potential. If such oscillators have three or more degree of freedom, and at least one of which also exhibits a nonlinearity, they are potentially capable of complex activity. By detecting the existence of unstable periodic orbits, we demonstrate low-dimensional dynamical behavior whose characteristics depend on the temperature range, impulse pattern, and temperature transients.

Abstract
The gene for actin as a highly conserved and functionally essential genetic element is developing into a major tool for phylogenetic analysis within a broad organismic range. We therefore propose a set of universally applicable primers that allow reliable amplification of actin genes. For primer construction the amino acid sequences of 57 actin genes comprising fungi, animals, plants and protists were analysed, aligned and used for the definition of six well-conserved regions which are suitable as priming sites in PCR amplification experiments. Ten primers were designed for specific in vitro amplification of actin gene fragments from a wide range of microorganisms. The corresponding gene fragments provide a strong basis to isolate nearly complete actin genes for further molecular characterization and for establishing phylogenies based on actin gene trees.

Abstract
A new method was developed to measure total and regional cerebellar volumes using MRI. Previously, the volumes of the cerebellum and its substructure had been studied planimetrically. The new method uses three-dimensional semiautomated volumetry with focus on reliability and performance. The method consists of a manual presegmentation using landmark-adjusted planes followed by region-growing segmentation and calculation of volume. The cerebellum is partitioned into 11 regions defined by planes, which are adjusted for internal cerebellar landmarks (three radial regions inside the vermis that extend into the medial hemisphere (one-fourth of the transverse diameter of the hemisphere); one region in the lateral hemisphere (remaining three-fourths)). Forty-six healthy volunteers were examined and the effects of age, gender, and symmetry were estimated. Shrinkage in the vermis (especially anterior superior compartment) was marked. Age effects diminished laterally and were not observed in the lateral hemisphere. Age effects on the total cerebellar volume were marginal. Effects of gender and symmetry were nonsignificant. Technique and results are discussed and related to methods and findings of others.
