Abstract
Aroyl chlorides react with terminal alkynes accompanied by decarbonylation in the presence of a catalytic amount of [RhCl(cod)](2) and PPh(3) to give the corresponding vinyl chloride derivatives regio- and stereoselectively in good yields. The catalyst efficiency is a marked function of the ratio of PPh(3) to the rhodium species; satisfactory results are obtained by employing a PPh(3)/Rh ratio of 1.0. The reaction may involve chlororhodation to the alkynes by the intermediary arylchlororhodium(III) species generated in situ followed by reductive elimination of the products, which are suggested by the results of some control experiments. In contrast to the reaction with terminal alkynes, that with some internal ones proceeds without decarbonylation to produce 2,3-disubstituted-1-indenones as the predominant products. The product structures suggest that, while the arylchlororhodium intermediate is also involved, arylrhodation to the alkynes, reinsertion of CO (coordinated to the metal), and intramolecular cyclization sequentially take place to give the indenones.

Abstract
Using a novel hydrogen peroxide heating method, we synthesized milky white, water-soluble polyhydroxylated fullerenes (fullerenols) with 36-40 hydroxyl groups (estimated average) along with 8-9 secondary bound water molecules. The fullerenols exhibited high water solubility up to 58.9 mg/mL in a neutral (pH = 7) condition. Dynamic light scattering analysis showed a high dispersion property, to give a narrow particle size distribution within 0.7-2.0 nm.

Abstract
A new method is reported that can be performed within a single vessel to analyze the composition of aldose, hexosamine, and sialic acid residues of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and oligosaccharides. Glycoconjugates are treated with sialidase or subjected to mild acid hydrolysis, before being treated with N-acetylneuraminic acid aldolase to convert the free sialic acid residues to their corresponding N-acylmannosamines. The reaction mixture is then successively subjected to acid hydrolysis (in order to produce monosaccharides), N-acetylation, and conversion with p-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester (ABEE). The ABEE-converted monosaccharides are simultaneously determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Determination of the sugar compositions of bovine fetuin, II3NeuGc alpha-LacCer, and 3'-sialyllactose with this method was found to be highly accurate. Linearity of the peak area vs. the amount of bovine fetuin ranged from 1 to 50 micrograms in all ABEE-converted monosaccharides. With a slight modification to this method, sialic acid residues can be separately determined as NeuAc and NeuGc. This novel method and its modified version are used to demonstrate the sugar compositions of alpha 1-acid glycoproteins from several sources.

Abstract
Polyhydroxylated fullerenes (fullerenols: C(60)(OH)(n)) are known as the major water-soluble fullerene derivatives which possess particular significance as free radical scavengers or antioxidants in biological systems. Recently, the novel polyhydroxylated fullerene (C(60) (OH)(44)·8H(2)O: SHH-F) was successfully synthesized. In the present study, we investigated the radical-scavenging effects and cytoprotective effects of three types of fullerenols (C(60)(OH)(6-12): LH-F, C(60) (OH)(32-34)·7H(2)O: HH-F, and C(60) (OH)(44)·8H(2)O: SHH-F) on UV-irradiation-induced cell injuries. HH-F and SHH-F exerted hydroxyl-radical scavenging activities as shown by DMPO-spin trap/ESR method, more markedly than LH-F. UVA or UVB irradiation-induced injuries in human skin keratinocytes HaCaT were significantly suppressed by HH-F and SHH-F, but scarcely by LF-H. The cytoprotective effects of SHH-F had a tendency to be superior to that of HH-F. And the cytoprotective effects of SHH-F against UVB-induced injuries were more effective than those of UVA. Irradiation with UVB to HaCaT cells was shown to cause rapid increases in cell-injury-associated symptoms such as intracellular oxidative stress levels, the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and chromatin condensation, all of which were repressed by SHH-F. Thus, UVB-induced diverse harmful effects could be prevented by SHH-F, which was suggested to exert the cytoprotective effects through intracellular reactive oxygen species-scavenging in the keratinocytes.

Abstract
We investigated the antioxidant activity of supramolecular water-soluble fullerenes, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-entrapped C(60), and gamma-cyclodextrin (CD)-bi-capped C(60), based on comparable beta-carotene bleaching assay. Antioxidant activity against reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by three different methods, (i) autoxidation of linoleic acid, (ii) hydrogen peroxide promoter, and (iii) photoirradiation, was evaluated as percent of inhibition relative to a control experiment in view of the bleaching rate constant (k(obs)) as well as the persistent absorbency of beta-carotene. Water-soluble fullerenes exhibit significant inhibitory effects on the oxidative discoloration of beta-carotene in any system.

Abstract
A great deal of research has been conducted focusing on membrane materials with reference to their blood compatibility, but blood compatibility is influenced both by the material used in membranes and their structure, and by the flow conditions at the membrane surface. Accordingly, the relationship between membrane surface roughness and hemocompatibility has been evaluated using five types of membranes of differing surface roughness by evaluating the inner surfaces of the hollow fibers by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by measuring platelet adhesion ratios using bovine blood. The yield stress, which equates to flow characteristics, was also evaluated using a glycerol suspension of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), a Bingham fluid. It was found that membranes having rough surfaces had high platelet adhesion ratios and poor hemocompatibility, whereas those with smoother surfaces had lower platelet adhesion ratios and better hemocompatibility. Measurement of the yield stresses for these membranes revealed higher values for those with rough surfaces, and lower values for those with smoother polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted surfaces. This suggests that flow conditions at the membrane surface differ according to its surface roughness, and that this difference in flow conditions also influences hemocompatibility.

Abstract
Li@C60 was synthesised by electrochemical reduction of ionic Li+@C60 salt. This is the first report of isolation and unambiguous characterisation of endohedral metallo[60]fullerene.
Lithium-encapsulated [60]fullerene Li@C60, namely, lithium-ion-encapsulated [60]fullerene radical anion Li+@C60˙–, was synthesised by electrochemical reduction of lithium-ion-encapsulated [60]fullerene trifluoromethanesulfonylimide salt [Li+@C60](TFSI–). The product was fully characterised by UV-vis-NIR absorption and ESR spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray analysis for the co-crystal with nickel octaethylporphyrin. In solution Li@C60 exists as a monomer form dominantly, while in the crystal state it forms a dimer (Li@C60–Li@C60) through coupling of the C60 radical anion cage. These structural features were supported by DFT calculations at the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory.

Abstract
Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) of varying molecular weight (Mw = 40-360 kDa) were employed to stabilize gold nanoclusters of varying size. The resulting Au:PVP clusters were subsequently used as catalysts for a kinetic study on the sized-dependent aerobic oxidation of 1-indanol, which was monitored by time-resolved in situ infrared spectroscopy. The obtained results suggest that the catalytic behaviour is intimately correlated to the size of the clusters, which in turn depends on the molecular weight of the PVPs. The highest catalytic activity was observed for clusters with a core size of ~7 nm, and the size of the cluster should increase with the molecular weight of the polymer in order to maintain optimal catalytic activity. Studies on the electronic and colloid structure of these clusters revealed that the negative charge density on the cluster surface also strongly depends on the molecular weight of the stabilizing polymers.

Abstract
Kinetics of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a series of meta- and para-substituted diphenyldiazomethanes (DDMs) with fullerenes C60 and C70 as dipolarophiles have been investigated in toluene at 30 degrees C. Fullerene C60 was ca. 1.5 times more reactive than C70. The rate constants (k) for the primary [3 + 2] additions increased with the increase of the electron-releasing ability of the meta and para substituent. The log k/k0 values were well correlated by the Yukawa-Tsuno (Y-T) equations with the smaller negative rho values (-1.6 and -1.7 for C60 and C70) and the reduced resonance reaction constants r (0.22 and 0.17) compared to similar reactions of common acceptors, TCNE, DDQ, and chloranil (CA). The plots of log k (acceptor) versus log k (C60) as reference gave good regression equations and the slopes became larger in the order of TCNE > DDQ > CA > C70 > or = C60. The rates were also found to decrease with the increase of solvent polarity due to the ground-state solvation of fullerenes. However, the relative reactivity of these acceptors toward the unsubstituted DDM increased in the order of DDQ > C60 > or = C70 > TCNE > CA. The unexpected higher reactivity of fullerenes was interpreted in terms of the inherent steric strain by the pyramidalization of the sp2 C-atoms as well as the shorter [6,6] bonds with larger pi-electron densities.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species has been suggested to be one of the key factors associated with the development of obesity. During spontaneous differentiation of mouse stromal preadipocytes OP9 into adipocytes, intracellular superoxide anion radicals (O (2) (-.) ) level markedly increases and is accompanied by a significant elevation of intracellular lipid accumulation. This differentiation-dependent increase in intracellular O (2) (-.) level positively correlated with the intracellular augmentation of the lipid level. Super-highly hydroxylated fullerene (SHH-F; C(60)(OH)(44)), a novel polyhydroxylated fullerene derivative, quenched intracellular O (2) (-.) , and lipid accumulation to 38.7 and 42.7 % of that in the control, respectively. By thin-layer chromatographic analysis of extracted cellular lipid components, SHH-F clearly decreased the triglycerides ratio in the whole lipid droplet fraction, but scarcely influenced other lipids components. PPARγ2 expression, which plays a key role in regulating adipogenic differentiation, was significantly suppressed by SHH-F at the late stage of differentiation, with unaltered PPARγ1 expression. The intracellular superoxide anion radical augmentation preceded expression of PPARγ2, strongly suggesting that the primary O (2) (-.) generation was closely associated with lipid accumulation and subsequent PPARγ2 induction. These results indicate that SHH-F suppresses intracellular lipid accumulation, particularly in lipid droplets, and decreases O (2) (-.) level and subsequent PPARγ2 upregulation during spontaneous differentiation of OP9 preadipocytes into adipocytes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Intrauterine infection such as by Escherichia coli and Ureaplasma spp induce placental inflammation and are one of the leading causes of preterm birth. Here we evaluated hydroxylated fullerene (C60[OH]44) for its in vitro antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects against host cellular responses to the ureaplasma toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) ligand, UPM-1. In addition, we investigated the preventative effects of C60(OH)44 in vivo in a mouse preterm birth model that used UPM-1. STUDY DESIGN TLR2-overexpressing cell lines and the primary cultures of mouse peritoneal macrophages were pretreated with C60(OH)44. After UPM-1 addition to the cell lines, the activation of the nuclear factor kappa-light chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappaB) signaling cascade and the production of reactive oxygen species were monitored. The levels of expression of inflammatory cytokines of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and the production of reactive oxygen species were quantified after stimulation with UPM-1. The in vivo preventative effects of C60(OH)44 on mice preterm birth were evaluated by analyzing the preterm birth rates and fetal survival rates in the preterm birth mouse model with placental histological analyses. RESULTS Pretreatment with C60(OH)44 significantly suppressed UPM-1-induced NF-kappaB activation and reactive oxygen species production in TLR2-overexpressing cell lines. In the primary culture of mouse peritoneal macrophages, UPM-1-induced production of reactive oxygen species and the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α were significantly reduced by pretreatment with C60(OH)44. In the UPM-1-induced preterm birth mouse model, the preterm birth rate decreased from 72.7% to 18.2% after an injection of C60(OH)44. Placental examinations of the group injected with C60(OH)44 reduced the damage of the spongiotrophoblast layer and reduced infiltration of neutrophils. CONCLUSION C60(OH)44 was effective as a preventative agent of preterm birth in mice.

Abstract
A simple one-pot reaction using in situ chemically generated Na-naphthalenide as an electron reductant in the preferential generation of C(60)(2-) is described. Trapping of C(60)(2-) intermediate with 2 molar equiv of sterically hindered 2-bromo-2-methylmalonate ester afforded two singly bonded fullerenyl bisadducts C(60)[-CMe(CO(2)Et)(2)](2) in 35% and 7% yield, respectively. The regiochemistry of these two products was determined to be 1,4- and 1,16-bisadducts, respectively, by NMR, UV-vis-NIR, LCMS, and X-ray single crystal structural analysis. The minor 1,16-bisadduct 2 exhibits long wavelength absorption bands in the near-IR region and prominent electron-accepting characteristics as compared with those of the major 1,4-bisadduct and pristine C(60). As revealed by DFT calculation, we propose that the origin of these unusual characters of 2 arises from the moiety of [18pi]-trannulene, in close resemblance to that of the highly symmetrical emerald green 1,16,29,38,43,60-hexaadduct of C(60), EF-6MC(n). Accordingly, we anticipate a fast progressive formation of plausible 1,16-bisadduct-like intermediate moieties on a C(60) cage as the precursor structure leading to the formation of EF-6MC(n), by taking the corresponding regiochemistry and electronic properties into account.
