Abstract
The soft X-ray photoelectron momentum microscopy (PMM) experimental station at the UVSOR Synchrotron Facility has been recently upgraded by additionally guiding vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in a normal-incidence configuration. PMM offers a very powerful tool for comprehensive electronic structure analyses in real and momentum spaces. In this work, a VUV beam with variable polarization in the normal-incidence geometry was obtained at the same sample position as the soft X-ray beam from BL6U by branching the VUV beamline BL7U. The valence electronic structure of the Au(111) surface was measured using horizontal and vertical linearly polarized (s-polarized) light excitations from BL7U in addition to horizontal linearly polarized (p-polarized) light excitations from BL6U. Such highly symmetric photoemission geometry with normal incidence offers direct access to atomic orbital information via photon polarization-dependent transition-matrix-element analysis.

Abstract
Studies showing that Panax ginseng promotes hair growth have largely been conducted using mice; there are few reports on how P. ginseng affects human hair growth. In particular, little is known about its effect on the telogen to anagen transition. To determine the effect of P. ginseng on human hair growth and the transition from the telogen to the anagen phase. The effects of P. ginseng extract (PGE) and the three major ginsenoside components, Rb1, Rg1, and Re, on the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) and human outer root sheath cells (ORSCs) were investigated. The effects of these compounds on the cell expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) and Noggin were assessed by real-time PCR. The effect of PGE on hair-shaft elongation was determined in a human hair follicle organ-culture system. PGE and the three ginsenosides stimulated the proliferation of DPCs and ORSCs and suppressed BMP4 expression in DPCs but did not affect FGF18 expression in ORSCs and Noggin expression in DPCs. PGE stimulated hair-shaft growth. PGE and the ginsenosides Rb1, Rg1, and Re stimulate the transition from the telogen phase to anagen phase of the hair cycle by suppressing BMP4 expression in DPCs. These compounds might be useful for promoting the growth of human hair.

Abstract
Fermi surfaces of transition metals, which describe all thermodynamical and transport quantities of solids, often fail to be modeled by one-electron mean-field theory due to strong correlations among the valence electrons. In addition, relativistic spin-orbit coupling pronounced in heavier elements lifts the degeneracy of the energy bands and further modifies the Fermi surface. Palladium and rhodium, two 4d metals attributed to show significant spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations, are ideal for a systematic and fundamental study of the two fundamental physical phenomena and their interplay in the electronic structure. In this study, we explored the Fermi surface of the 4d noble metals palladium and rhodium obtained via high-resolution constant initial state momentum microscopy. The complete 3D-Fermi surfaces of palladium and rhodium were tomographically mapped using soft X-ray photon energies from 34 eV up to 660 eV. To fully capture the orbital angular momentum of states across the Fermi surface, the Fermi surface tomography was performed using p- and s- polarized light. Applicability and limitations of the nearly-free electron final state model in photoemission are discussed using a complex band structure model supported by experimental evidence. The significance of spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations across the Fermi surfaces will be discussed within the context of the photoemission results. State-of-the-art fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) calculations within the one-step model of photoemission are used to support the experimental results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe a standardised subserosal layer dissection technique and evaluate its outcomes in canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records of dogs undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique for the treatment of cholecystolithiasis, cholecystitis, and gall bladder mucocele at a single veterinary hospital from January 2015 to September 2021 were extracted. Operative time, subserosal layer dissection achievement rate, open conversion rate, and complication rate were evaluated. RESULTS Thirty-four dogs were included. The most common preoperative diagnosis was cholecystolithiasis (n=29). Operative time was 190 minutes (range: 110 to 330 minutes). Subserosal layer dissection of more than 90% of the gall bladder bed was achieved in 27 (79%) dogs. Conversion to open surgery was required in three (8.8%) dogs. There were no cases of intraoperative bleeding, bile duct injury, or reoperation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study showed that laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique could be performed successfully in dogs. Future prospective clinical studies are needed to determine safety and effectiveness of this technique compared to standard techniques.

Abstract
The Achlioptas process, a percolation algorithm on random network, shows a rapid second-order phase transition referred to as explosive percolation. To obtain the transition point and critical exponent β for percolations on a random network, especially for bond percolations, we propose a new scaling analysis that is independent of the system size. The transition point and critical exponent β are estimated for the product-rule (PR) and da Costa-Dorogovtsev-Goltsev-Mendes (dCDGM) (m=2) models of the Achlioptas process, as well as for the Erdős-Rényi (ER) model, which is a classical model in which the analytic values are known. The validity of the scaling analysis is confirmed, especially for the transition point. The estimations of β are also consistent with previously reported values for the ER and dCDGM(2) models, whereas the β estimation for the PR model deviates somewhat. By introducing a parameter representing the maximum cluster size, we develop an extrapolation scheme for the critical exponent β from the simulation just at the transition point in order to obtain a more accurate value. The estimated value of β is improved compared with that obtained by the scaling analysis for the ER model and is also consistent with the β value obtained for the dCDGM(2) model, whereas its deviation from the previously reported value is larger for the PR model. We discuss the accuracy of the present estimations and draw conclusions about their reliability.

Abstract
Transitional high-energy diets reduce peripheral blood lymphocytes in dairy cows. High-energy diets upregulate IL-1β and IL-2 and downregulate IL-10 expression. Functional lactobacillus plantarum LP1 restores normal levels of lymphocytes subset. Lactobacillus plantarum LP1-added diets reduce inflammatory cytokine expression. LP1 mitigates immune response imbalances caused by transitional high energy diets.
High-yield dairy cows need high energy feed during periods of increased milk production. The transitional feeding to high energy feed increases the risk of developing a variety of metabolic disorders. Here, five Holstein cows were fed a four-stage feeding protocol (3 weeks for each stage) ranging from 54.9 to 73.7% total digestive nutrients (TDN). The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of lactic acid bacteria on high-energy-fed cows associated with transitional feeding, and to evaluate the effects of probiotics on intestinal bacterial changes and inflammatory responses. Three feed transition periods were established for five cows, and Lactobacillus plantarum RGU-LP1 (LP1) was fed as a probiotic during the high-energy feeding period. The number of lymphocyte subsets such as CD3-, CD4-, and CD8 positive cells decreased in response to the high energy feed. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokine (IL-1β and IL-2) gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was shown to increase in those animals receiving the high energy feed. However, supplementation with LP1 resulted in an increase in the number of lymphocyte subsets and the expression of IL-1β and IL-2 were returned to the level at low energy diet. These results suggest that high energy diets induce inflammatory cytokine responses following LPS stimulation, and that the addition of LP1 mitigates these results by regulating the LPS-induced inflammatory reaction. Therefore, the functional lactic acid bacteria LP1 is expected to regulate inflammation resulting from high energy feeding, and this probiotic could be applied to support inflammatory regulation in high-yield dairy cows.

Abstract
A number of synthetic methodologies and applications of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been reported since they were first discovered nearly two decades ago. Unlike metal-based or semiconductor-based (e. g., metal chalcogenides) quantum dots (MSQDs), CQDs have the unique feature of being prepared through a variety of synthetic protocols, which are typically understood from considerations of reaction models and photoluminescence mechanisms. Consequently, this brief review article describes quantum dots, in general, and CQDs, in particular, from various viewpoints: (i) their definition, (ii) their photophysical properties, and (iii) the superiority of CQDs over MSQDs. Where possible, comparisons are made between CQDs and MSQDs. First, however, the review begins with a general brief description of quantum dots (QDs) as nanomaterials (sizes≤10 nm), followed by a short description of MSQDs and CQDs. Described subsequently are the various top-down and bottom-up approaches to synthesize CQDs followed by their distinctive photophysical properties (emission spectra; quantum yields, Φs).

Abstract
Suppression of heavy metal elution from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash by cement or geopolymer solidification was studied. When these approaches are implemented, however, the volume of the solidified body increases as a consequence of the solidifying agent addition. Considering that residual landfill disposal capacity is decreasing in the long term, a novel method to suppress the elution of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash without decreasing the disposal capacity is needed. We studied four different water repellents and the results indicated that heavy metal elution can easily be suppressed by impregnating the incineration fly ash with commercially available silane oligomers, alkyl alkoxysilane compounds, and water repellents like fatty acids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cepharanthine (CEP), a compound extracted from the vine Stephania cephalantha, is commonly prescribed to treat alopecia areata; however, the scientific evidence for its efficacy is limited. AIM To investigate the effect of CEP and its structural analogues on human hair growth in vitro. METHODS The effects of CEP and three of its structural analogues on the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and human outer root sheath cells (hORSCs) were investigated. Their effects on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were also assessed by real-time PCR. Activation of pathways leading to VEGF expression, such as intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) expression, was also characterized. RESULTS CEP and two of its structural analogues significantly stimulated the growth of hDPCs but not hORSCs. Moreover, CEP and all three structural analogues significantly induced the expression of VEGF in hDPCs. CEP increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in hDPCs. CEP also increased the expression of HIF-1α and HIF-2α and induced the expression of HIF-responsive genes in hDPCs, even under normoxia. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that CEP and its structural analogues have the potential to restore hair growth by promoting the proliferation of hDPCs and increasing their expression of VEGF.

Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs; luminescent carbon nanoparticles, size < 10 nm) have attracted much attention with respect to their eco-friendliness and multi-functionality. The solvent-dependent photoluminescence of CQDs has been well investigated to optimize the synthesis process and homogeneous dispersion. Although some alkan-1-ol solvents, such as ethanol, have been well utilized empirically as good solvents when synthesizing highly photoluminescent CQDs, the role of alkan-1-ol solvents, particularly long-chain alkan-1-ols (e.g., 1-nonanol, 1-decanol), has not yet been clarified. Herein, we demonstrate a method for the synthesis of strongly yellow emitting CQDs using solvothermal treatment and elucidate the role of alkan-1-ol solvents in the photoluminescence of CQDs. These CQDs have been characterized using theoretical calculations, ex situ morphological observations using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), and 500 MHz 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 13C NMR spectroscopy. A comparative study of alkan-1-ol solvents suggests a mechanism for the agglomeration and aggregation of carbon precursors, intermediates, and CQDs, which is expected to lead to further synthesis studies on highly luminescent CQDs. Abstract
Introduction
Although radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) has become a standard therapy, the ablation outcomes in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) has not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of RFCA for AF in patients undergoing HD.
Methods
Twenty-three patients undergoing HD (17 men, age 65±8 years, 19 paroxysmal AF) who underwent RFCA for drug-refractory AF in two institutes were enrolled in the study and defined as HD group. The clinical parameters, recurrence free rate and frequency of periprocedural complications were compared to 46 randomly selected age, gender and left atrial diameter matched controls not requiring HD defined as non-HD group (34men, age 67±7 years, 38 paroxysmal AF).
Results
The patients in HD group had a significantly lower body mass index (21±3 vs. 25±3 P<0.01), higher prevalence of coronary artery disease (30% vs. 10% P=0.04), and higher prevalence of congestive heart failure (52% vs. 10% P<0.01) compared to patients in non-HD group. Echocardiography indicated lower left ventricular ejection fraction (57±17% vs. 65±9% P=0.02), higher E/e' (20±8 vs. 12±4 P<0.01), higher tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient (30mmHg vs. 24mmHg P<0.01) and more impaired left ventricular diastolic function in HD group. All the subjects underwent bilateral pulmonary vein isolation plus additional linear lesion. The number of ablation procedure was similar between the two groups (1.43±0.5 vs. 1.46±0.6 P=0.88). During the follow-up period of 37±25 months after the last procedure, the arrhythmia free rate was similar between the two groups (86% vs. 84% log-rank P=0.82). Vascular access complication occurred in two patients in HD group, and pericardial effusion occurred in one patient in non-HD group, while no life-threatening complications were observed in either group. Cardiogenic cerebral infarction occurred in one patient in non-HD group. Discontinuation of oral anticoagulation after the ablation was more often seen in the HD group compared to non-HD group (91% vs. 60% P<0.01).
Conclusions
Although patients undergoing HD had more impaired left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, RFCA for AF in patients with HD was shown to be as effective and safe as in non-HD patients. RFCA may be an efficient approach to manage AF in patients undergoing HD.

Abstract
Constraints on light sources that use mercury (arc lamps) are evolving with the establishment of the Minamata Convention, which has led to the proliferation of LEDs. However, no LED light source emits intense ultraviolet radiation at wavelengths below 300 nm for photolytic applications. Thus, it is necessary to develop suitable UV light sources for the decontamination of wastewater and water sterilization processing. Herein, we explore various substitute gases (e.g., N2, Ar, He and SF6) to replace mercury, which is commonly employed in arc lamps, using an EL (electroluminescence) quartz assembly platform similar to microwave-discharge electrodeless lamps. Although nitrogen is an inexpensive and safe gas, it cannot generate significant UV radiation in the UVC region of 200-300 nm. This problem in the Hg-free light source was resolved by mixing a very small quantity of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as an additive filler gas in a nitrogen-, argon- or helium-filled assembly. The low-pressure mercury lamp consisting of Hg/Ar filler gases is ca. 25% more efficient than the novel N2/SF6 lamp toward the photolytic decomposition of Rhodamine-B (RhB) dye-contaminated wastewater (1.66 × 10-4 mM min-1versus 1.22 × 10-4 mM min-1). Nonetheless, the latter has proven far more efficient than an LED source emitting 365 nm radiation (0.057 × 10-4 mM min-1). The addition of TiO2 to RhB-contaminated wastewater demonstrated that this Hg-free N2/SF6 light source is as efficient as the corresponding Hg/Ar electroluminescent lamp toward the photocatalytic decomposition of the RhB dye pollutant.

Abstract
The LitR/CarH protein family transcriptional regulator is a new type of photoreceptor based on the function of adenosyl B12 (AdoB12) as a light-sensitive ligand. Here, we studied a semi-conserved histidine residue (His132) in the light-sensing (AdoB12-binding) domain at the C-terminus of LitR from a thermophilic Gram-negative bacterium, Thermus thermophilus HB27. The in vivo mutation of His132 within LitR caused a reduction in the rate of carotenoid production in response to illumination. BIAcore analysis revealed that the illuminated-LitRH132A possesses high DNA-binding activity compared to the wild-type protein. The subunit structure analysis showed that LitRH132A performed an incomplete subunit dissociation. The ability of LitRH132A to associate with AdoB12 was reduced compared with that of the wild-type protein in an equilibration dialysis experiment. Overall, these results suggest that His132 of LitR is involved in the association with AdoB12 as well as the light-sensitive DNA-binding activity based on oligomer dissociation.

Abstract
Non-equilibrium capillary electrophoresis of equilibrium mixtures (NECEEM) is a kinetic capillary electrophoresis method used for the affinity analysis of DNA binding to proteins or ligands as well as a rapid selection of DNA aptamers. However, long DNA strands (100-mer or more) are generally difficult to analyse by this method owing to their poor peak separation. Herein, we report optimized conditions (use of a neutral phosphate buffer with an ionic strength of 0.074 as a binding buffer and use of an 80-cm fused silica capillary with a 75-μm internal diameter) for the peak separation of a 100-mer thrombin-binding DNA aptamer-target complex and its consequent enrichment using the NECEEM-based capillary electrophoresis–systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (CE-SELEX) method.

Abstract
A 1D metallic surface state was created on an anisotropic InSb(001) surface covered with Bi. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) showed a 1D Fermi contour with almost no 2D distortion. Close to the Fermi level (E_{F}), the angle-integrated photoelectron spectra showed power-law scaling with the binding energy and temperature. The ARPES plot above E_{F}, obtained thanks to a thermally broadened Fermi edge at room temperature, showed a 1D state with continuous metallic dispersion across E_{F} and power-law intensity suppression around E_{F}. These results strongly suggest a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid on the Bi/InSb(001) surface.

Abstract
LdrP (TT_P0055) (LitR-dependent regulatory protein) is one of the four cAMP receptor protein (CRP)/FNR family transcriptional regulators retained by the extremely thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus. Previously, we reported that LdrP served as a positive regulator for the light-induced transcription of crtB, a carotenoid biosynthesis gene encoded on the megaplasmid of this organism. Here, we showed that LdrP also functions as an activator of the expression of genes clustered around the crtB gene under the control of LitR, an adenosyl B12-bound light-sensitive regulator. Transcriptome analysis revealed the existence of 19 LitR-dependent genes on the megaplasmid. S1 nuclease protection assay confirmed that the promoters preceding TT_P0044 (P44), TT_P0049 (P49) and TT_P0070 (P70) were activated upon illumination in the WT strain. An ldrP mutant lost the ability to activate P44, P49 and P70, whilst disruption of litR resulted in constitutive transcription from these promoters irrespective of illumination, indicating that these genes were photo-dependently regulated by LdrP and LitR. An in vitro transcription experiment demonstrated that LdrP directly activated mRNA synthesis from P44 and P70 by the Thermus RNA polymerase holocomplex. The present evidence indicated that LdrP was the positive regulator essential for the transcription of the T. thermophilus light-inducible cluster encoded on the megaplasmid.

Abstract
We successfully generated chimeric DNA aptamers that contained six nucleoside analogs of 2'-O,4'-C-methylene bridged/locked nucleic acid (2',4'-BNA/LNA) in the primer region and multiple guanosine analogs of 2'-deoxy-2'-fluoro-ribonucleic acid (FNA) in the non-primer region using capillary electrophoresis-systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (CE-SELEX). Active species enrichment became saturated only after five selection rounds, and we obtained DNA-based xeno-nucleic acid (XNA) aptamers that had high binding affinities for the target human thrombin, with dissociation constant (Kd) values of ≥10 nanomolar. Based on sequence and circular dichroism (CD) analyses, these XNA aptamers exhibited RNA-like conformations, which could cause DNA-based strands to adopt structurally diverse conformations.
