Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with regional lymph node metastasis: a case report

The case of a 21-year-old man with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the scalp that spread to deep cervical lymph nodes is presented. Available literature is reviewed, and the infrequency of metastasis is discussed. Since cases of metastases almost always involve recurrent lesions, the importance of wide and deep resection in the initial operation cannot be overemphasized.

Topological difference in the three-dimensional sinusoid structure between normal human liver and hepatocellular carcinoma

A quantitative topological analysis of the three-dimensional sinusoid structure of normal human livers and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas was performed with the aid of a computer system for reconstruction from serial tissue sections. The mean cycle rank (number of independent cycles) of the sinusoid network in a given volume tissue, 200 x 200 x 40 micron3 in size, was 60.6 +/- 8.8 in the normal liver and 20.8 +/- 11.9 in the hepatocellular carcinoma. Statistically, there was a significant difference between the two values (P less than 0.001), while there was no significant difference in the sinusoid volume of the same size tissue between the normal liver and hepatocellular carcinoma. It was therefore found that the sinusoid network of the hepatocellular carcinoma was more sparsely and coarsely connected in three-dimensional space than that of the normal liver.

Psychiatric consultations at medical and surgical wards: the role of psychiatric consultant

A one-year survey was conducted on the psychiatric consultation work at Kyushu University Hospital. It was found that an organic brain syndrome was the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis of the referred patients. The most frequent purpose of request for psychiatric consultations was for the management of the patient. The main consultant functions were diagnoses and to advise on the management of the patient. The consultant functions agreed with the purposes of request in many cases, but discrepancies between the two were found about the patient disposition. The nature of the consultant role was compared with some American studies. It was deemed necessary that consultation-liaison psychiatry based on Japan's present conditions, medical and social, should be developed.

Quantification and Neutralization of the Interfacial Electrostatic Potential and Visualization of the Dispersion Interaction in Visualization of the Interfacial Electrostatic Complementarity

Visualization of the interfacial electrostatic complementarity (VIINEC) is a quantum chemistry-based method to examine protein-protein interactions (PPI). In VIINEC, the electrostatic complementarity between proteins at the interface is visually and quantitatively evaluated using the partial electrostatic potential (pESP), which is defined based on the fragment molecular orbital method. In this work, new quantification and neutralization methods of the pESP were proposed together with a method to visualize the dispersion interaction. The reliability and efficiency of these methods were evaluated using 17 models of the complex. It was found that the quantification of the electrostatic complementarity with the pESP using the new neutralization method has a high correlation with the interaction energy, supporting the reliability of VIINEC. As an illustrative example, the PPI between a major histocompatibility complex class I molecule and a T-cell receptor was examined, which demonstrated the value of VIINEC in chemical and biological research.
