Abstract
The current ARDS guidelines highly recommend lung protective ventilation which include plateau pressure (Pplat < 30 cm H2O), positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP > 5 cm H2O) and tidal volume (Vt of 6 ml/kg) of predicted body weight. In contrast, the ELSO guidelines suggest the evaluation of an indication of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) due to hypoxemic or hypercapnic respiratory failure or as bridge to lung transplantation. Finally, these recommendations remain a wide range of scope of interpretation. However, particularly patients with moderate-severe to severe ARDS might benefit from strict adherence to lung protective ventilation strategies. Subsequently, we discuss whether extended physiological ventilation parameter analysis might be relevant for indication of ECMO support and can be implemented during the daily routine evaluation of ARDS patients. Particularly, this viewpoint focus on driving pressure and mechanical power.

Abstract
Reduced Cl− conductance causes inhibited muscle relaxation after forceful voluntary contraction due to muscle membrane hyperexcitability. This represents the pathomechanism of myotonia congenita. Due to the prevailing data suggesting that an increased potassium level is a main contributor, we studied the effect of a modulator of a big conductance Ca2+- and voltage-activated K+ channels (BK) modulator on contraction and relaxation of slow- and high-twitch muscle specimen before and after the pharmacological induction of myotonia. Human and murine muscle specimens (wild-type and BK−/−) were exposed to anthracene-9-carboxylic acid (9-AC) to inhibit CLC-1 chloride channels and to induce myotonia in-vitro. Functional effects of BK-channel activation and blockade were investigated by exposing slow-twitch (soleus) and fast-twitch (extensor digitorum longus) murine muscle specimens or human musculus vastus lateralis to an activator (NS1608) and a blocker (Paxilline), respectively. Muscle-twitch force and relaxation times (T90/10) were monitored. Compared to wild type, fast-twitch muscle specimen of BK−/− mice resulted in a significantly decreased T90/10 in presence of 9-AC. Paxilline significantly shortened T90/10 of murine slow- and fast-twitch muscles as well as human vastus lateralis muscle. Moreover, twitch force was significantly reduced after application of Paxilline in myotonic muscle. NS1608 had opposite effects to Paxilline and aggravated the onset of myotonic activity by prolongation of T90/10. The currently used standard therapy for myotonia is, in some individuals, not very effective. This in vitro study demonstrated that a BK channel blocker lowers myotonic stiffness and thus highlights its potential therapeutic option in myotonia congenital (MC).

Abstract
In myotonia, reduced Cl- conductance of the mutated ClC-1 channels causes hindered muscle relaxation after forceful voluntary contraction due to muscle membrane hyperexcitability. Repetitive contraction temporarily decreases myotonia, a phenomena called "warm up." The underlying mechanism for the reduction of hyperexcitability in warm-up is currently unknown. Since potassium displacement is known to reduce excitability in, for example, muscle fatigue, we characterized the role of potassium in native myotonia congenita (MC) muscle. Muscle specimens of ADR mice (an animal model for low gCl- conductance myotonia) were exposed to increasing K+ concentrations. To characterize functional effects of potassium ion current, the muscle of ADR mice was exposed to agonists and antagonists of the big conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel (BK) and the voltage-gated Kv7 channel. Effects were monitored by functional force and membrane potential measurements. By increasing [K+]0 to 5 mM, the warm-up phenomena started earlier and at [K+]0 7 mM only weak myotonia was detected. The increase of [K+]0 caused a sustained membrane depolarization accompanied with a reduction of myotonic bursts in ADR mice. Retigabine, a Kv7.2-Kv7.5 activator, dose-dependently reduced relaxation deficit of ADR myotonic muscle contraction and promoted the warm-up phenomena. In vitro results of this study suggest that increasing potassium conductivity via activation of voltage-gated potassium channels enhanced the warm-up phenomena, thereby offering a potential therapeutic treatment option for myotonia congenita.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Manual palpation is a core skill in physical examination. Assessing elastic properties such as tissue stiffness has the potential for being an important diagnostics tool in the detection of cancer and other diseases. OBJECTIVE The study describes the newly developed Stiffness Comparison Test (SCT). The aim of our study was to test the SCT as a tool to detect interindividual differences in palpation skill related to gender, age and occupational experience. METHODS We used eight pairs of polyuterhane gel pads with the stiffness difference decreasing from the first to the last pair. Test subjects were asked to palpate each pair and determine stiffness differences. PARTICIPANTS We recruited 25 osteopaths, 48 other manual therapists and 50 participants from other non-manual professions. RESULTS As hypothesized there was no significant difference in SCT performance between the sexes (t(121) = 0.288, p = .774). To investigate if an age-related decline would have an effect on palpation skill, we carried out a linear regression. As hypothesized, the model did not predict any significant associations (F(1, 121) = 2.733, b = -0.149, p = .101, R2 = 0.022). To compare the effect of occupational groups on SCT performance a one-way ANOVA was conducted. There were no statistically significant differences between group means (F(2, 120) = 0.598, p = .552). CONCLUSIONS The SCT can be used as simple and affordable tool for assessment, teaching and training in all disciplines of manual medicine. Further refinements of the tool are suggested to advance its discrimination power.

Abstract
Aging is a one-way process associated with profound structural and functional changes in the organism. Indeed, the neuromuscular system undergoes a wide remodeling, which involves muscles, fascia, and the central and peripheral nervous systems. As a result, intrinsic features of tissues, as well as their functional and structural coupling, are affected and a decline in overall physical performance occurs. Evidence from the scientific literature demonstrates that senescence is associated with increased stiffness and reduced elasticity of fascia, as well as loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and regenerative potential. The interaction between muscular and fascial structures is also weakened. As for the nervous system, aging leads to motor cortex atrophy, reduced motor cortical excitability, and plasticity, thus leading to accumulation of denervated muscle fibers. As a result, the magnitude of force generated by the neuromuscular apparatus, its transmission along the myofascial chain, joint mobility, and movement coordination are impaired. In this review, we summarize the evidence about the deleterious effect of aging on skeletal muscle, fascial tissue, and the nervous system. In particular, we address the structural and functional changes occurring within and between these tissues and discuss the effect of inflammation in aging. From the clinical perspective, this article outlines promising approaches for analyzing the composition and the viscoelastic properties of skeletal muscle, such as ultrasonography and elastography, which could be applied for a better understanding of musculoskeletal modifications occurring with aging. Moreover, we describe the use of tissue manipulation techniques, such as massage, traction, mobilization as well as acupuncture, dry needling, and nerve block, to enhance fascial repair.

Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis induces an intraperitoneal inflammatory reaction, which in the long term may cause deterioration of the peritoneal structure and function as the dialysis membrane. We studied the effect of the overnight effluent dialysate from patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis on aging of the human peritoneal mesothelial cells in an in vitro model of replicative cellular senescence. In the control group cells were cultured in the standard medium and in the studied groups in culture medium mixed 1:1 v/v with the dialysate ± L-2-oxothiazolodine-4-carboxylic acid 1 mmol/L (OTZ). OTZ was used as the precursor for the synthesis of glutathione in these cells. Dialysate accelerated senescence of the mesothelial cells as reflected by elongation of their population doubling time, reduced expression of KI-67 gene, and increased β-galactosidase activity. Also, expression of the genes regulating the production of the inflammatory mediators (interleukin-6, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, metalloproteinase-2, hyaluronan), proangiogenic (VEGF) and profibrotic (fibronectin) factors was increased in that group. At the same time, these cells secreted more inflammatory mediators. Simultaneous treatment of the cells with the dialysate and OTZ slowed down their senescence, whose intensity was similar to that in the control group. The results presented in this manuscript prove that the intraperitoneal inflammatory reaction induced by repeated infusions of the dialysis fluid accelerates the senescence of the mesothelial cells, which may result in fibrosis and neoangiogenesis within the peritoneum. Simultaneous supplementation of the cells with a glutathione precursor (OTZ) may prevent the development of these pathological changes.

Abstract
KEY POINTS During myotonia congenita, reduced chloride (Cl- ) conductance results in impaired muscle relaxation and increased muscle stiffness after forceful voluntary contraction. Repetitive contraction of myotonic muscle decreases or even abolishes myotonic muscle stiffness, a phenomenon called 'warm up'. Pharmacological inhibition of low Cl- channels by anthracene-9-carboxylic acid in muscle from mice and ADR ('arrested development of righting response') muscle from mice showed a relaxation deficit under physiological conditions compared to wild-type muscle. At increased osmolarity up to 400 mosmol L-1 , the relaxation deficit of myotonic muscle almost reached that of control muscle. These effects were mediated by the cation and anion cotransporter, NKCC1, and anti-myotonic effects of hypertonicity were at least partly antagonized by the application of bumetanide. ABSTRACT Low chloride-conductance myotonia is caused by mutations in the skeletal muscle chloride (Cl- ) channel gene type 1 (CLCN1). Reduced Cl- conductance of the mutated channels results in impaired muscle relaxation and increased muscle stiffness after forceful voluntary contraction. Exercise decreases muscle stiffness, a phenomena called 'warm up'. To gain further insight into the patho-mechanism of impaired muscle stiffness and the warm-up phenomenon, we characterized the effects of increased osmolarity on myotonic function. Functional force and membrane potential measurements were performed on muscle specimens of ADR ('arrested development of righting response') mice (an animal model for low gCl- conductance myotonia) and pharmacologically-induced myotonia. Specimens were exposed to solutions of increasing osmolarity at the same time as force and membrane potentials were monitored. In the second set of experiments, ADR muscle and pharmacologically-induced myotonic muscle were exposed to an antagonist of NKCC1. Upon osmotic stress, ADR muscle was depolarized to a lesser extent than control wild-type muscle. High osmolarity diminished myotonia and facilitated the warm-up phenomenon as depicted by a faster muscle relaxation time (T90/10 ). Osmotic stress primarily resulted in the activation of the NKCC1. The inhibition of NKCC1 with bumetanide prevented the depolarization and reversed the anti-myotonic effect of high osmolarity. Increased osmolarity decreased signs of myotonia and facilitated the warm-up phenomenon in different in vitro models of myotonia. Activation of NKCC1 activity promotes warm-up and reduces the number of contractions required to achieve normal relaxation kinetics.

Abstract
Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic disorder of skeletal muscle metabolism which is characterized by generalized muscle rigidity, increased body temperature, rhabdomyolysis, and severe metabolic acidosis. The underlying mechanism of MH involves excessive Ca(2+) release in myotubes via the ryanodine receptor type 1 (RyR1). As RyR1 is also expressed in B-lymphocytes, this study investigated whether cellular metabolism of native B-lymphocytes was also altered in MH susceptible (MHS) individuals. A potent activator of RyR1, 4-chloro-m-cresol (4-CmC) was used to challenge native B-lymphocytes in a real-time, metabolic assay based on a pH-sensitive silicon biosensor chip. At the cellular level, a dose-dependent, phasic acidification occurred with 4-CmC. The acidification rate, an indicator of metabolic activation, was significantly higher in B-lymphocytes from MHS patients and required 3 to 5 fold lower concentrations of 4-CmC to evoke similar acidification rates to MHN. Native B-lymphocytes from MHS individuals are more sensitive to 4-CmC than those from MHN, reflecting a greater Ca(2+) turnover. The acidification response, however, was less pronounced than in muscle cells, presumably reflecting the lower expression of RyR1 in B-lymphocytes.

Abstract
Standard procedures to coat gold nanorods (AuNR) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based ligands are not reliable and high PEG-grafting densities are not achieved. In this work, the ligand exchange of AuNR with PEGMUA, a tailored PEG-ligand bearing a C10 alkylene spacer, is studied. PEGMUA provides AuNR with very high stability against oxidative etching with cyanide. This etching reaction is utilized to study the ligand exchange in detail. Ligand exchange is faster, less ligand consuming and more reproducible with assisting chloroform extraction. Compared to PEG ligands commonly used, PEGMUA provides much higher colloidal and chemical stability. Further analyses based on NMR-, IR- and UV/Vis-spectroscopy reveal that significantly higher PEG-grafting densities, up to ∼3 nm(-2), are obtained with PEGMUA. This demonstrates how the molecular structure of the PEG ligand can be used to dramatically improve the ligand exchange and to synthesize PEGylated AuNR with high chemical and colloidal stability and high PEG grafting densities. Such AuNR are especially interesting for applications in nanomedicine.

Abstract
Fascia is composed of collagenous connective tissue surrounding and interpenetrating skeletal muscle, joints, organs, nerves, and vascular beds. Fascial tissue forms a whole-body, continuous three-dimensional viscoelastic matrix of structural support. The classical concept of its mere passive role in force transmission has recently been disproven. Fascial tissue contains contractile elements enabling a modulating role in force generation and also mechanosensory fine-tuning. This hypothesis is supported by in vitro studies demonstrating an autonomous contraction of human lumbar fascia and a pharmacological induction of temporary contraction in rat fascial tissue. The ability of spontaneous regulation of fascial stiffness over a time period ranging from minutes to hours contributes more actively to musculoskeletal dynamics. Imbalance of this regulatory mechanism results in increased or decreased myofascial tonus, or diminished neuromuscular coordination, which are key contributors to the pathomechanisms of several musculoskeletal pathologies and pain syndromes. Here, we summarize anatomical and biomechanical properties of fascial tissue with a special focus on fascial dysfunctions and resulting clinical manifestations. Finally, we discuss current and future potential treatment options that can influence clinical manifestations of pain syndromes associated with fascial tissues.

Abstract
The ability to understand the impact of adversarial processes on networks is crucial to various disciplines. The objects of study in this article are fitness-driven networks. Fitness-dependent networks are fully described by a probability distribution of fitness and an attachment kernel. Every node in the network is endowed with a fitness value and the attachment kernel translates the fitness of two nodes into the probability that these two nodes share an edge. This concept is also known as mutual attractiveness. In the present article, fitness does not only serve as a measure of attractiveness, but also as a measure of a node's robustness against failure. The probability that a node fails increases with the number of failures in its direct neighborhood and decreases with higher fitness. Both static and dynamic network models are considered. Analytical results for the percolation threshold and the occupied fraction are derived. One of the results is that the distinction between the dynamic and the static model has a profound impact on the way failures spread over the network. Additionally, we find that the introduction of mutual attractiveness stabilizes the network compared to a pure random attachment.

Abstract
Time-varying networks play an important role in the investigation of the stochastic processes that occur on complex networks. The ability to formulate the development of the network topology on the same time scale as the evolution of the random process is important for a variety of applications, including the spreading of diseases. Past contributions have investigated random processes on time-varying networks with a purely random attachment mechanism. The possibility of extending these findings towards a time-varying network that is driven by mutual attractiveness is explored in this paper. Mutual attractiveness models are characterized by a linking function that describes the probability of the existence of an edge, which depends mutually on the attractiveness of the nodes on both ends of that edge. This class of attachment mechanisms has been considered before in the fitness-based complex networks literature but not on time-varying networks. Also, the impact of mutual selection is investigated alongside opinion formation and epidemic outbreaks. We find closed-form solutions for the quantities of interest using a factorizable linking function. The voter model exhibits an unanticipated behavior as the network never reaches consensus in the case of mutual selection but stays forever in its initial macroscopic configuration, which is a further piece of evidence that time-varying networks differ markedly from their static counterpart with respect to random processes that take place on them. We also find that epidemic outbreaks are accelerated by uncorrelated mutual selection compared to previously considered random attachment.

Abstract
We study a class of network growth models with attachment rules governed by intrinsic node fitness. Both the individual node degree distribution and the degree correlation properties of the network are obtained as functions of the network growth rules. We also find analytical solutions to the inverse, design, problems of matching the growth rules to the required (e.g., power-law) node degree distribution and more generally to the required degree correlation function. We find that the design problems do not always have solutions. Among the specific conditions on the existence of solutions to the design problems is the requirement that the node degree distribution has to be broader than a certain threshold and the fact that factorizability of the correlation functions requires singular distributions of the node fitnesses. More generally, the restrictions on the input distributions and correlations that ensure solvability of the design problems are expressed in terms of the analytical properties of their generating functions.

Abstract
Sealing of the flow channel is an important aspect during integration of microfluidic channels and optical waveguides. The uneven topography of many waveguide-fabrication techniques will lead to leakage of the fluid channels. Planarization methods such as chemical mechanical polishing or the etch-back technique are possible, but troublesome. We present a simple but efficient alternative: By means of changing the waveguide layout, bonding pads are formed along the microfluidic channels. With the same height as the waveguide, they effectively prevent leakage and hermetically seal the channels during bonding. Negligible influence on light propagation is found when 10-mum-wide bonding pads are used. Fabricated microsystems with application in absorbance measurements and flow cytometry are presented.

Abstract
Contribution to the psychophysics of sweet taste. Part 8. On the inter-individual variability of the difference sensitivity. The variability of sensitivity of volunteers is a considerable imponderability for the comparison of sensoric results. The paper deals with the quantitative determination of the different sensitivity of sweet taste of 132 persons, 38 men and 94 women at the age of 19 to 64 years, using a statistically defined method. The numbers of errors are estimated for each person by means of one test difference of two saccharose concentrations using 10 pairs of comparisons and 4 runs. The average number of error of 10 comparisons corresponds to the individual measure of sensitivity. The medium value of the total distribution is 1.54 and the standard deviation is 1.19 errors. The value is only less above the binomial calculated number. In random test women show in comparison to men a significant higher variance at the statistical identical mean. A variance analysis based on the cutting of the distribution edges in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 errors can detect high significantly the steady learning effect of the volunteers during the runs. The method is applicable to determine classified subjective characteristics. The calculations of necessary group numbers for such experiments on the base of binomial distribution are discussed.

Abstract
By means of a new method (double staircase) concentration pairs of equal intensity for the sweet compounds acesulfame-K, aspartame, cyclamate-Na, saccharine-Na, dextrose and glucitol were determined with sucrose on 6 or 7 equidistant scaled levels, respectively, with 4 repetitions. The parameters maximal intensity Rm, the concentration coefficient b and the mean Rm/b, respectively, are calculated for each substance from the known parameters for sucrose using the exponential function R = Rm(1-e-bS/Rm), which describes the sweetness intensity R in dependence of the concentration S. For exact determination of the maximal intensity the upper concentration level was fixed at very high degree. Additionally, the relative sweetness of each concentration level of each substance is calculated. In all cases the exponential function is valid without limitation. The statistical parameters are homogenous and are laying within the applied staircase method. Systematical deviations could not be found.

Abstract
For the determination of differentiation probabilities in a multiple experimental design the range of stimuli is a significant source of disturbance. In order to determine their efficiency, sequences with 5 equidistant gradated concentrations of sucrose were used, which were compared with a basic concentration. The probability for each gradation was carried out with help of 2-AFC-technique (60 pairs each). 5 gradations at 3 basic concentrations with fixed, average balance were examined in a factorized experimental design. The frequency of the correct judgments is linearily dependent on the sequence of stimuli. In the experimental space the slope of this relationships decreases with increasing gradation hyperbolically (range-effects). The level of the basic stimuli is in this view without any greater importance. When determining the difference thresholds these context effects are to be considered.

Abstract
The suitability of a sequential staircase-method for the determination of equal stimuli of the gustatory sense is experimentally investigated. The aim is the decrease of experimental expenditure when ruling sources of bias. In order to realize them sucrose solutions are used both for the constant stimulus and also for the sequence of stimuli. Possible factors are the gradation of the sequence of stimuli and its displacement towards the constant stimulus. These are factorized in a two-staged trial arrangement and are interpreted in a form of an analysis of variance. The gradation of sequence (grain) is the key factor. It defines both the occasional bias and also the efficiency of systematical sources of bias. Thus the subject-depending judgement errors, which occur in larger gradation, are avoidable with their adjustment on the half of the difference threshold. The errors, which are due to the direction, are counterbalanced through an up and down trial execution with a following meaning average. A remaining influence of the displacement of sequence is normally neglective. The standard deviation for the single determination lies--independently of the concentration level--dimensionally slightly above the half of the setting grain. The method of constant stimuli requires at least the twofold experimental expenditure for a similar result.

Abstract
Female RLEF1/Lati rats were chronically treated with 2-mercaptoethanol in a dose of 13 micrograms.100 g bw-1.day-1 dissolved in drinking water. During a 48-h experiment 15N-labelled glycine was given orally in a dose of 5 mg 15N.kg bw-1 and urine samples were collected and analysed by an emission spectrometric isotope method. Protein synthesis and nitrogen excretion rate constants were calculated according to the three-pool model, and 3-methylhistidine excretion rates were also determined. 2-Mercaptoethanol appears to influence protein metabolism; however, the slower rates of protein synthesis proved to be apparent in almost all groups of treated rats. Protein synthesis and nitrogen excretion rate constants have exceptionally high values in 2-year-old rats, possibly explained by the occurrence of hypercompensation mechanisms in old age. These were reflected by the excretion rates of 3-methylhistidine which were reduced as a result of sulphhydryl group interactions in age-dependent cellular metabolic changes.

Abstract
Aimed to the construction of a prediction equation for estimations of lipid content from animal water content body composition was determined by whole body analysis of male rats (1) given access, ad libitum, to a commercial standard diet (n = 144; ranging from 60 to 600 g in weight, and from the 4th to the 34th week of age), and (2) showing striking variations with regard to nutritional state, dietary history, enlarged fat deposition, genetic origin, intestinal microbial status, and advanced age (n = 75). It was shown that a unique coefficient of water content in lipid-free body mass does not exist. The results of statistical analysis for the grouped values of percentage body dry matter (x) and percentage body lipid (y) indicate that the latter can be estimated accurately from body water content directly determined by the use of the quadratic regression equation y = -0.2864 x +0.01615 x2 with a standard deviation of the procedure Sy = +/- 1.40. This prediction equation is valid for a wide developmental span even under highly different experimental states. Differences between the calculated body lipid contents vs. analytically determined values are smaller than by using a linear regression equation or coefficient(s) of hydration of lipid-free body mass.

Abstract
Considering various conditions of adaptation, the authors determined the Weber discrimination thresholds for the sweet taste of saccharose. When the adaptation to the basic stimulus is maintained and use is made of the differential coefficient behaviour, the discrimination threshold is an exponential function of the concentration. The discrimination threshold is by definition that amount of stimulant per unit of volume which will produce an effect of the magnitude of 1. Consequently, the numbers of moles being substituted, its reciprocal, the probability of obtaining a stimulus response, is greater than 1. A differential equation, namely (formula: see text), can be formulated as the basis of the stimulus-response behaviour of saccharose, the integration of which yields a discrimination characteristic expressed as (formula: see text). S = concentration of the solution as the stimulus intensity; R = stimulus response expressed in steps. The parameter b is the maximum probability of the stimulus response and can be termed substance-specific concentration coefficient. Rm is the maximum step number when the stimulus intensity tends to infinity; it is also substance-specific. As this characteristic involves both the proportional factors and the differential coefficients, it is called P-D characteristic. From this invariant relationship, the static P characteristic for a very slow increase in stimulus intensity can be derived. When the adaptation to the basic stimulus is abolished by mouth rinsing between tests in paired comparisons, the dependence of the discrimination threshold on the concentration is more than exponential. The stimulus-response characteristics obtained with different time-courses of stimulation are approximated by both the Weber-Fechner and the Stevens law.

Abstract
With a view to the solution of problems concerned with the consumer's acceptance of foods in which saccharose had been substituted, a discussion is opened on psychologic and physiologic aspects of the measurability of sensory stimulus-sensation relations. The classic method for measuring taste is the determination of the taste discrimination threshold which is also termed least discernible difference. In the lat years, the discrimination threshold has been determined and calculated mainly as the mean concentration (stimulus) difference resulting from the distribution of the tasters according to their efficiency (probit analysis). In contrast, the new method, which is described in detail, is based on the dependence of the probability of a perception of difference upon the intensity which is linear and represents the initial course of a stimulus-response curve. Differences in efficiency in the group of tasters, which is assumed to be homogeneous, are included in the variance of difference frequencies found. The control of the course of the test by sequential analysis and the binomial weighting of the probabilities obtained allow to perform calculations of the discrimination threshold which are largely free from systematic errors; this discrimination threshold is defined as the concentration difference that engenders the arbitrarily defined alternative probability of Pa = 0.75. To minimize the risk of overrating the measurement result, it is suggested to calculate in addition, on the basis of the binomial distribution, the confidence limits of the discrimination threshold. Furthermore, the constant stimulus method for determining the perception of two stimulus intensities of different sweetening agents is adapted, as to performance and calculation, to the new aspects in discrimination threshold determination.

Abstract
The sweetness potency of sweeteners depends on temperature. At 50 degrees C the 2.4-fold concentration of saccharin and the 1.3-fold of cyclamate respectively is needed to produce the same sweetness (as related to sucrose) as in solutions at 20 degrees C. As well as in water the sweetening power decreases in chinese tea with increasing temperature. Only in case of cyclamate solutions of high sweetness this effect is diminished. In the mathematical description of the relation between stimulus and perception the decrease of the relative sweetness observed can be expressed by a comformable decrease of the concentration coefficient. The effect of temperature on the perception of sweetness can be explained by the Arrhenius' conception. The critical increments are 23 kJ/mol for saccharin and 8 kJ/mol for both cyclamate and fructose.
