Interaction between microalgae and phycosphere bacteria in a binary cultivation system-based dairy farm wastewater treatment

The combination of microalgal culture and wastewater treatment is an emerging topic. This study investigated the use of different microalgae to treat different types of dairy farm wastewater. The results showed that the removal of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus by mixed microalgae was over 99% and 80%, respectively. The highest production of protein in biomass and extracellular polymeric substances was observed in high-concentration wastewater. In the phycosphere, the abundance of Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria increased, while that of Bacteroidota decreased. Phycosphere bacteria were strongly correlated with microalgal growth and the composition of extracellular polymeric substances, especially with bound extracellular polymeric substances relative to soluble extracellular polymeric substances. Genes associated with photosynthesis and respiration in phycosphere bacteria were upregulated, contributing to the material exchange capacity in the microalgal-bacterial systems. The interaction between microalgae and phycosphere bacteria thus represents the core of the binary cultivation system-based wastewater treatment and requires further investigation.

Microalgae create a highway for carbon sequestration in livestock wastewater: Carbon sequestration capacity, sequestration mechanisms, influencing factors, and prospects

Greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock industry are recognized as a major environmental issue. This includes emissions from livestock wastewater. However, the common methods used for carbon sequestration (CS) rarely involve treatment of livestock wastewater, due to an absence of standardized emission points and difficulties in gas collection. To remedy this knowledge gap, this review discusses the sequestration capacity, technical classification, mechanisms, and factors influencing carbon sequestration by microalgae (MCS) in livestock wastewater. First, the carbon emission characteristics of livestock farm are discussed, concluding that, compared with those from enteric fermentation, emissions from waste management are characterized by dispersed emission points, lack of obvious emission patterns, and difficulties in gas collection. Secondly, the use and potential of MCS in livestock wastewater are summarized, with emphasis on the mechanisms involved (both heterotrophic and autotrophic MCS). It was found that development of the heterotrophic microalgal mechanism or combining the use of autotrophic microalgae with bacteria was key to the effective use of MCS for treating livestock wastewater. Finally, physical and chemical factors directly influencing MCS, as well as biological factor (species), were found to determine the potential of MCS. Furthermore, a model for recycling MCS in livestock farms is proposed, providing a novel solution to the achievement of carbon neutrality, resource recycling and ecological environmental protection.

Microalgal-bacterial consortia for the treatment of livestock wastewater: Removal of pollutants, interaction mechanisms, influencing factors, and prospects for application

The livestock sector is responsible for a significant amount of wastewater globally. The microalgal-bacterial consortium (MBC) treatment has gained increasing attention as it is able to eliminate pollutants to yield value-added microalgal products. This review offers a critical discussion of the source of pollutants from livestock wastewater and the environmental impact of these pollutants. It also discusses the interactions between microalgae and bacteria in treatment systems and natural habitats in detail. The effects on MBC on the removal of various pollutants (conventional and emerging) are highlighted, focusing specifically on analysis of the removal mechanisms. Notably, the various influencing factors are classified into internal, external, and operating factors, and the mutual feedback relationships between them and the target (removal efficiency and biomass) have been thoroughly analysed. Finally, a wastewater recycling treatment model based on MBC is proposed for the construction of a green livestock farm, and the application value of various microalgal products has been analysed. The overall aim was to indicate that the use of MBC can provide cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches for the treatment of livestock wastewater, thereby advancing the path toward a promising microalgal-bacterial-based technology.

Impact of indigenous vs. cultivated microalgae strains on biomass accumulation, microbial community composition, and nutrient removal in algae-based dairy wastewater treatment

This study investigated the role of indigenous and cultivated microalgae in nutrient removal and biomass production in dairy wastewater, especially in microbial function change. Five indigenous and three cultured microalgal strains were grown in sterile and non-sterile dairy wastewater, and nutrient removal and biomass profiles were analysed. Results showed higher phosphorus removal (90.1 % vs. 81.8 %, p < 0.001) and biomass production (2.3 vs. 2.0 g/L, p < 0.001) in sterile wastewater, while nitrogen removal was higher in non-sterile wastewater (83.1 % vs. 77.5 %, p < 0.05). Indigenous strains grew more consistently in high-concentration wastewater, though not significantly different from cultured strains. Phycosphere bacteria communities were more closely associated with total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and pigment content, while free-living bacteria primarily dependent on chlorophyll a and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The nitrogen transforming function was enhanced in phycosphere. These findings provide insights for optimizing microalgal-based wastewater treatment, advancing sustainable dairy wastewater management.

Microalgal-bacterial system responses to nitrogen forms in dairy farm wastewater: Focusing on the phycosphere and nitrogen transformation

As an environmentally friendly medium, microalgae are often used in wastewater treatment. However, few studies have examined the effects of different nitrogen forms on microalgae and bacteria, particularly regarding material and gene transfer and nitrogen metabolic pathways in phycosphere and various extracellular polymeric substance layers. To address this research gap, Chlorella vulgaris was used to treat the dairy farm wastewater with different nitrogen additives. The results showed that the dry weight and chlorophyll a production were lowest at high ammonia nitrogen concentrations (0.460 g/L and 0.883 mg/L, respectively). The ability of microalgae to remove total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen was significantly enhanced at appropriate nitrogen concentrations. There were clear differences in community abundance between phycosphere and different extracellular polymeric substance layers bacteria. Nitrate nitrogen promoted electron transfer in photosynthesis, while organic nitrogen facilitated the synthesis of siderophores. In high-ammonia nitrogen wastewater, ammonia nitrogen conversion primarily occurred through the action of nitrifying bacteria, whereas denitrification promoted nitrate nitrogen conversion. There is an interaction between nitrogen forms and microalgal-bacterial system. The study provided critical insights for microalgae treatment of dairy farm wastewater, contributing to environmental friendly and resource recycling wastewater management.
