Assessment of vision-related quality of life and depression in patients with age-related macular degeneration. Indian J Ophthalmol 2024; 72:S293-S297. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) and depression levels. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 143 patients who are being followed up with a diagnosis of AMD. The Turkish versions of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) and Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15) were directed to the patients. The questionnaire results were analyzed based on the severity, treatment procedures for AMD, and sociodemographic characteristics of patients. RESULTS The subscale scores obtained from the NEI VFQ-25 ranged from 47.54 for "near activities" to 84.02 for "color vision." Of the patients, 59.4% (85/143) were compatible with depression according to the GDS-15 questionnaire. There was no significant difference in the NEI VFQ-25 subscale scores between the gender groups (P > 0.05), whereas females were statistically significantly more depressive than males (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the injection (anti-vascular endothelial growth factors [anti-VEGF]) group and the non-injection group in terms of subscales of the NEI VFQ-25 questionnaire (P > 0.05). The depression ratio in the non-injected group was statistically significantly higher (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION According to the present study, the association between depression and AMD is a fact that should be highlighted. Patients with depression had lower scores on the quality of life (QOL) test. Previous intravitreal injection did not affect NEI VFQ-25 scores. Female patients with AMD had higher rates of depression and lower visual acuity levels.

Abstract
Laser diodes based on solution-processable materials can benefit numerous technologies including integrated electronics and photonics, telecommunications, and medical diagnostics. An attractive system for implementing these devices is colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The progress towards a QD laser diode has been hampered by rapid nonradiative Auger decay of optical-gain-active multicarrier states, fast device degradation at high current densities required for laser action, and unfavorable competition between optical gain and optical losses in a multicomponent device stack. Here we resolve some of these challenges and demonstrate optically excited lasing from fully functional high-current density electroluminescent (EL) devices with an integrated optical resonator. This advance has become possible due to excellent optical gain properties of continuously graded QDs and a refined device architecture, which allows for highly efficient light amplification in a thin, EL-active QD layer.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the ocular findings and the relationship between these findings and the disease severity of patients with Fabry disease (FD) in South-East Anatolia. METHODS We enrolled the 24 eyes of 24 patients with FD and the disease severity scores were obtained with FD severity scoring system (DS3). The relationship between the presence of any ocular findings and DS3 scores was evaluated. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 35.2 ± 8.6 years. The mean DS3 score and α-galactosidase A enzyme activity of the patients was 7.04 ± 3.71 and 1.93 ± 0.84 μmol/l/h, respectively. Of the 24 patients, 20 (83.3%) had cornea verticillate (CV), 18 (75%) had tortuous conjunctival vessels, 15 (62.5%) had tortuous retinal vessels and 3 (12.5%) had lens opacities. The ocular vascular abnormalities were associated with disease severity (p < 0.05); however, the presence of CV did not affect the DS3 scores (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS According to our study, the patients with ocular vascular abnormalities associated with FD had more severe disease than those who did not have an abnormality. CV was the most common ocular finding in FD, but it has no association with disease severity.

Abstract
Background Insulin resistance (IR) is a component of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome and it increases in the presence of chronic inflammation. Lately, "neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio" (NLR) has been used as an indicator of inflammation. This study evaluates the association between IR and NLR in obese women. Material and methods Obese female patients who were followed up in a university hospital for the last two years were included in the study. Homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR), C-peptide, NLR, bioelectrical impedance measurements of 83 patients were analyzed. Results The C-peptide levels of our patients showed a highly significant correlation with HOMA-IR (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between fasting plasma C-peptide levels and NLR (r=0.36 and p<0.003) in obese women. The increase in C-peptide levels had a significant effect on the increase in NLR (r2=0.31, p=0.002), however insulin had no similar effect on NLR (r2=0.01, p=0.544). Conclusion Plasma C-peptide levels are better correlated with NLR compared to other parameters of IR. C-peptide may be used as an efficient laboratory marker with high relevance in IR and chronic inflammatory conditions in obese women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although host microbiome play a role in both hormonal status and fertility, this issue has not yet been clarified. Since the endometrium is a sterile tissue, it is accepted that microbiota does not grow under normal conditions. The aim of the study was to reveal the characteristics of endometrial microbiota according to serum AMH levels in women with implantation failure. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-five women aged 20-30 years with two or more implantation failures were included in the study. They were divided into 3 groups according to their serum AMH values: Group 1 -AMH <1.3 ng/ml; Group 2 - AMH between 1.3-2.6 ng/ml; Group 3 - AMH >2.6 ng/ml. Twenty-two healthy fertile women who were the same age as the infertile group and applied for cervical smear screening were accepted as the control group. Following the embryo transfer, the tip of the catheter was inserted into the transport medium under sterile conditions. Sowing was carried out by touching the tips of the catheter to the blood agar medium. After the evaluation of the petri dishes at the end of 48 hours of incubation, colonies were stained with Gram stain. Microorganisms in the colonies were identified with the Vitek-2 device according to their gram-staining characteristics and their antibiograms were made. RESULTS A negative correlation was detected between low AMH values and the microbiome detection rates in endometrial cultures. In patients with low serum AMH levels, the chance of endometrial microbiota growth was higher in the endometrial culture medium. The most common bacteria were found to be MSSA, MRKNS and lactobacillus. Clinical pregnancy rates were found to be significantly higher in the group with high AMH levels. As AMH levels increased, positive flora detection rates decreased, while clinical pregnancy rates increased. CONCLUSIONS Low serum AMH level increases the rate of positive endometrial microbiome in culture and decreases clinical pregnancy rates.

What is known already
Vitiligo is a multifactorial disorder characterized by the loss of functional melanocytes, and both genetic and non-genetic factors play a pathogenic role.Male infertility is also a common problem, contributing to almost 50% of all infertility problems.It was reported that skin-derived cytokines triggered in diseases with inflammation in the skin negatively affect spermatogenesis and sperm viability.Although vitiligo is a common skin disorder, the pathogenesis remains unknown. It was shown that inflammation and oxidative stress was accepted as a trigger factor in melanocyte degeneration.It was emphasized that the increase in inflammation in the body might be indirectly related to male infertility.
Study design, size, duration
This cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2015 and January 2021 by retrospectively evaluating patients who underwent sperm analysis at an university hospital. All patients aged between 25-45 years who underwent semen analysis at the relevant dates were evaluated in terms of the study (N = 5167).76 patients with vitiligo and 71 healthy controls were included in our study. The diagnosis of vitiligo was made clinically and using Wood's lamp.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
The control group was selected from among age and BMI-matched patients who underwent semen analysis (n = 71).The parameters examined in the study were as follows: Characteristics of cases (age, BMI, family history), Disease features (duration of disease, clinical type, Koebner phenomenon, halo naevi)The level of hormones [follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroxine (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), testosterone, prolactin], and blood glucose, Semen analysis (volume, sperm concentration, total motility, A + B motility, morphology).
Main results and the role of chance
Seventy-six patients with vitiligo and 71 healthy controls were included in our study. The mean age was 30.29 ± 4.18 (range, 25-45) years. The mean age at onset was 23.66 ± 3.96 (range, 15-35) years, and the mean duration of disease was 6.36 ± 2.80 (range, 2-20) years in the vitiligo group. Sixty-seven (88.16%) patients had non-segmental vitiligo and nine (11.84%) had segmental vitiligo. Seven (9.21%) patients had a family history, three (3.95%) had Koebner phenomenon, and one (1.32%) patient had halo naevi.Free T4 levels were significantly lower in the vitiligo group than in the control group (P < 0.001) There were no significant differences between the groups regarding age, BMI, FSH, LH, TSH, testosterone, prolactin, and blood glucose levels. When we evaluated the semen analysis results, we found that sperm concentrations A+B motility and morphology were significantly higher in the controls than in the patients with vitiligo (P < 0.001,p<0.01,and P < 0.001) )There were no significant differences between the groups concerning volume and total motility. We divided patients with vitiligo into three groups according to their sperm concentrations.There were no significant differences between groups regarding age and BMI Free T4 levels were significantly higher in the control group than in the other groups. (p < 0.001).
Limitations, reasons for caution
The retrospective design of the study is an important limitation. Although the relationship between vitiligo and sperm parameters has been examined, the direction and cause of this relationship could not be determined due to the study design.
Wider implications of the findings
Inflammation and oxidative stress may affect sperm quality.One of the reasons for the more negative results in sperm analysis parameters in patients with vitiligo in our study might be due to increased inflammation level.Oxidative stress may be the trigger factor in the destruction of melanocytes as well as semen parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we aimed to evaluate the salivary β-galactosidase and Halimeter values (HMV), organoleptic scores (OLS) and Winkel tongue coating index (WTCI) in periodontal health and periodontitis (P), and also their changes after phase I periodontal therapy and tongue cleaning. METHODS The participants were separated as follows: 25 P with halitosis (Group 1), 25 P without halitosis (Group 2) and 25 healthy controls (Group 3). Periodontal recordings, HMV, OLS and WTCI scores were recorded, and whole saliva β-galactosidase levels were measured colorimetrically in the samples at baseline and 1 month after the therapy. RESULTS The baseline values of HMV, OLS, WTCI and salivary β-galactosidase levels were significantly higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant decrease in periodontal recordings, HMV, OLS, WTCI and salivary β-galactosidase levels in all P patients by the therapy (P < 0.05). However, major reductions in halitosis measurements and saliva enzyme levels were observed in Group 1 after the treatment. CONCLUSION Our results showed that salivary β-galactosidase was associated with halitosis parameters and phase I periodontal therapy played an important role to reduce this enzyme level and halitosis parameters in P.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Although the negative effects of high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) values on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) levels have been known for years, the negative effects of increased TSH on GFR in euthyroid cases have been reported in recent years. This study was aimed at investigating the association between the effect of increased TSH values and estimated-GFR (eGFR) levels in euthyroid cases with MetS. METHODS For this hospital-based descriptive study, 191 MetS cases (123 females, 68 males) were evaluated. Those whose TSH was not within 0.5-4.5 uIU/mL, eGFR was <40 mL/min/1.73 m2, and/or reported any thyroid/kidney disease were excluded. Partial correlation coefficients were calculated to investigate the relationship between the eGFR values and several other numerical variables while controlling for age and BMI in addition to the adjusted gender effect. Thereafter, the multiple linear regression analysis with a stepwise variable selection approach was used to reveal the independent factors that could affect the logarithmically transformed eGFR. RESULTS The median age was 52 (19-65) years, the median eGFR was 94.3 (41.3-194) mL/min/1.73 m2, and the median TSH was 1.58 (0.50-4.50) uIU/mL in the whole group. Increased TSH even in the normal range was associated with eGFR after adjusting for age and body mass index (BMI), especially in females. The high age (b = -0.160, p=0.005), high BMI (b = -0.134, p=0.020), high TSH (b = -0.380, p < 0.01), and high uric acid (b = -0.348, p < 0.01) were found as significant predictors of the eGFR in MetS patients. CONCLUSION Independent of age and BMI, elevated TSH even in the euthyroid range showed an association with the eGFR in female MetS cases who had normal kidney functions. This correlation was stronger than the correlations between the eGFR and the MetS diagnostic parameters. These findings need further studies on the issue..

Abstract
As an attractive materials system for high-performance optoelectronics, colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) benefit from atomic-level precision in thickness, minimizing emission inhomogeneous broadening. Much progress has been made to enhance their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and photostability. However, to date, layer-by-layer growth of shells at room temperature has resulted in defects that limit PLQY and thus curtail the performance of NPLs as an optical gain medium. Here, we introduce a hot-injection method growing giant alloyed shells using an approach that reduces core/shell lattice mismatch and suppresses Auger recombination. Near-unity PLQY is achieved with a narrow full-width-at-half-maximum (20 nm), accompanied by emission tunability (from 610 to 650 nm). The biexciton lifetime exceeds 1 ns, an order of magnitude longer than in conventional colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). Reduced Auger recombination enables record-low amplified spontaneous emission threshold of 2.4 μJ cm-2 under one-photon pumping. This is lower by a factor of 2.5 than the best previously reported value in nanocrystals (6 μJ cm-2 for CdSe/CdS NPLs). Here, we also report single-mode lasing operation with a 0.55 mJ cm-2 threshold under two-photoexcitation, which is also the best among nanocrystals (compared to 0.76 mJ cm-2 from CdSe/CdS CQDs in the Fabry-Pérot cavity). These findings indicate that hot-injection growth of thick alloyed shells makes ultrahigh performance NPLs.

Abstract
We proposed and showed strongly orientation-controlled Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) to highly anisotropic CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs). For this purpose, we developed a liquid-air interface self-assembly technique specific to depositing a complete monolayer of NPLs only in a single desired orientation, either fully stacked (edge-up) or fully nonstacked (face-down), with near-unity surface coverage and across large areas over 20 cm2. These NPL monolayers were employed as acceptors in an energy transfer working model system to pair with CdZnS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) as donors. We found the resulting energy transfer from the QDs to be significantly accelerated (by up to 50%) to the edge-up NPL monolayer compared to the face-down one. We revealed that this acceleration of FRET is accounted for by the enhancement of the dipole-dipole interaction factor between a QD-NPL pair (increased from 1/3 to 5/6) as well as the closer packing of NPLs with stacking. Also systematically studying the distance-dependence of FRET between QDs and NPL monolayers via varying their separation (d) with a dielectric spacer, we found out that the FRET rate scales with d-4 regardless of the specific NPL orientation. Our FRET model, which is based on the original Förster theory, computes the FRET efficiencies in excellent agreement with our experimental results and explains well the enhancement of FRET to NPLs with stacking. These findings indicate that the geometrical orientation of NPLs and thereby their dipole interaction strength can be exploited as an additional degree of freedom to control and tune the energy transfer rate.

Abstract
Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) offer important benefits in nanocrystal optoelectronics with their unique excitonic properties. For NPLs, colloidal atomic layer deposition (c-ALD) provides the ability to produce their core/shell heterostructures. However, as c-ALD takes place at room temperature, this technique allows for only limited stability and low quantum yield. Here, highly stable, near-unity efficiency CdSe/ZnS NPLs are shown using hot-injection (HI) shell growth performed at 573 K, enabling routinely reproducible quantum yields up to 98%. These CdSe/ZnS HI-shell hetero-NPLs fully recover their initial photoluminescence (PL) intensity in solution after a heating cycle from 300 to 525 K under inert gas atmosphere, and their solid films exhibit 100% recovery of their initial PL intensity after a heating cycle up to 400 K under ambient atmosphere, by far outperforming the control group of c-ALD shell-coated CdSe/ZnS NPLs, which can sustain only 20% of their PL. In optical gain measurements, these core/HI-shell NPLs exhibit ultralow gain thresholds reaching ≈7 µJ cm-2 . Despite being annealed at 500 K, these ZnS-HI-shell NPLs possess low gain thresholds as small as 25 µJ cm-2 . These findings indicate that the proposed 573 K HI-shell-grown CdSe/ZnS NPLs hold great promise for extraordinarily high performance in nanocrystal optoelectronics.

Abstract
A hybrid structure of the quasi-2D colloidal semiconductor quantum wells assembled with a single layer of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides offers the possibility of highly strong dipole-to-dipole coupling, which may enable extraordinary levels of efficiency in Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Here, we show ultrahigh-efficiency FRET from the ensemble thin films of CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets (NPLs) to a MoS2 monolayer. From time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, we observed the suppression of the photoluminescence of the NPLs corresponding to the total rate of energy transfer from ∼0.4 to 268 ns-1. Using an Al2O3 separating layer between CdSe/CdS and MoS2 with thickness tuned from 5 to 1 nm, we found that FRET takes place 7- to 88-fold faster than the Auger recombination in CdSe-based NPLs. Our measurements reveal that the FRET rate scales down with d-2 for the donor of CdSe/CdS NPLs and the acceptor of the MoS2 monolayer, d being the center-to-center distance between this FRET pair. A full electromagnetic model explains the behavior of this d-2 system. This scaling arises from the delocalization of the dipole fields in the ensemble thin film of the NPLs and full distribution of the electric field across the layer of MoS2. This d-2 dependency results in an extraordinarily long Förster radius of ∼33 nm.

Abstract
Doping of bulk semiconductors has revealed widespread success in optoelectronic applications. In the past few decades, substantial effort has been engaged for doping at the nanoscale. Recently, doped colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have been demonstrated to be promising materials for luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) as they can be engineered for providing highly tunable and Stokes-shifted emission in the solar spectrum. However, existing doped CQDs that are aimed for full solar spectrum LSCs suffer from moderately low quantum efficiency, intrinsically small absorption cross-section, and gradually increasing absorption profiles coinciding with the emission spectrum, which together fundamentally limit their effective usage. Here, the authors show the first account of copper doping into atomically flat colloidal quantum wells (CQWs). In addition to Stokes-shifted and tunable dopant-induced photoluminescence emission, the copper doping into CQWs enables near-unity quantum efficiencies (up to ≈97%), accompanied by substantially high absorption cross-section and inherently step-like absorption profile, compared to those of the doped CQDs. Based on these exceptional properties, the authors have demonstrated by both experimental analysis and numerical modeling that these newly synthesized doped CQWs are excellent candidates for LSCs. These findings may open new directions for deployment of doped CQWs in LSCs for advanced solar light harvesting technologies.

Abstract
Oligomer nanoparticles (OL NPs) have been considered unsuitable for solid-state lighting due to their low quantum yields and low temperature stability of their emission. Here, we address these problems by forming highly emissive and stable OL NPs solids to make them applicable in lighting. For this purpose, we incorporated OL NPs into sucrose matrix and then prepared their all-organic monoliths. We show that wrapping the OL NPs in sucrose significantly increases their quantum yield up to 44%, while the efficiency of their dispersion and direct solid-film remain only at ∼6%. We further showed ∼3-fold improved temperature stability of OL NP emission within these monoliths. Our experiments revealed that a physical passivation mechanism is responsible from these improvements. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we successfully employed these high-stability, high-efficiency monoliths as color converters on a blue LED chip. Considering the improved optical features, low cost, and simplicity of the presented methodology, we believe that this study holds great promise for a ubiquitous use of organic OL NPs in lighting and possibly in other photonic applications.

Abstract
We proposed and demonstrated the first account of large-area, semi-transparent, tandem photosensitive nanocrystal skins (PNSs) constructed on flexible substrates operating on the principle of photogenerated potential buildup, which avoid the need for applying an external bias and circumvent the current-matching limitation between junctions. We successfully fabricated and operated the tandem PNSs composed of single monolayers of colloidal water-soluble CdTe and CdHgTe nanocrystals (NCs) in adjacent junctions on a Kapton polymer tape. Owing to the usage of a single NC layer in each junction, noise generation was significantly reduced while keeping the resulting PNS films considerably transparent. In each junction, photogenerated excitons are dissociated at the interface of the semi-transparent Al electrode and the NC layer, with holes migrating to the contact electrode and electrons trapped in the NCs. As a result, the tandem PNSs lead to an open-circuit photovoltage buildup equal to the sum of those of the two single junctions, exhibiting a total voltage buildup of 128.4 mV at an excitation intensity of 75.8 μW cm(-2) at 350 nm. Furthermore, we showed that these flexible PNSs could be bent over 3.5 mm radius of curvature and cut out in arbitrary shapes without damaging the operation of individual parts and without introducing any significant loss in the total sensitivity. These findings indicate that the NC skins are promising as building blocks to make low-cost, flexible, large-area UV/visible sensing platforms with highly efficient full-spectrum conversion.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present and compare the long-term results of Dr. Tamcelik's previously described technique of Tenon advancement and duplication with the conventional Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation technique in patients with refractory glaucoma. METHODS This study was a multicenter, retrospective case series that included 303 eyes of 276 patients with refractory glaucoma who underwent glaucoma valve implantation surgery. The patients were divided into three groups according to the surgical technique applied and the outcomes compared. In group 1, 96 eyes of 86 patients underwent AGV implant surgery without patch graft; in group 2, 78 eyes of 72 patients underwent AGV implant surgery with donor scleral patch; in group 3, 129 eyes of 118 patients underwent Ahmed valve implant surgery with "combined short scleral tunnel with Tenon advancement and duplication technique". The endpoint assessed was tube exposure through the conjunctiva. RESULTS In group 1, conjunctival tube exposure was seen in 11 eyes (12.9 %) after a mean 9.2 ± 3.7 years of follow-up. In group 2, conjunctival tube exposure was seen in six eyes (2.2 %) after a mean 8.9 ± 3.3 years of follow-up. In group 3, there was no conjunctival exposure after a mean 7.8 ± 2.8 years of follow-up. The difference between the groups was statistically significant. (P = 0.0001, Chi-square test). CONCLUSION This novel surgical technique combining a short scleral tunnel with Tenon advancement and duplication was found to be effective and safe to prevent conjunctival tube exposure after AGV implantation surgery in patients with refractory glaucoma.

Abstract
We report plasmonically coupled light-sensitive skins of nanocrystal monolayers that exhibit sensitivity enhancement and spectral range extension with plasmonic nanostructures embedded in their photosensitive nanocrystal platforms. The deposited plasmonic silver nanoparticles of the device increase the optical absorption of a CdTe nanocrystal monolayer incorporated in the device. Controlled separation of these metallic nanoparticles in the vicinity of semiconductor nanocrystals enables optimization of the photovoltage buildup in the proposed nanostructure platform. The enhancement factor was found to depend on the excitation wavelength. We observed broadband sensitivity improvement (across 400-650 nm), with a 2.6-fold enhancement factor around the localized plasmon resonance peak. The simulation results were found to agree well with the experimental data. Such plasmonically enhanced nanocrystal skins hold great promise for large-area UV/visible sensing applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate with color Doppler imaging the effects of phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia on retrobulbar vessels hemodynamics. METHODS In this prospective study, color Doppler imaging was used to measure the maximum (Vmax) and minimum flow velocity (Vmin) of the central retinal vein, and the Vmax and Vmin, pulsatility index and resistance index of the central retinal artery, nasal, and temporal posterior ciliary arteries, and ophthalmic artery blood flow before and 1 day after phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia. RESULTS After phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia, Vmin of the central retinal artery increased (p ≤ 0.05), whereas the other variables showed no significant change. CONCLUSIONS Phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia has a minor effect on retrobulbar blood flow. Therefore topical anesthesia should be suitable for patients with ocular perfusion disorders (eg, glaucoma).

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of intravitreal ranibizumab on retrobulbar blood flow in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS Thirty-one eyes of 30 patients with neovascular AMD were examined prospectively by both color Doppler imaging and fundus fluorescein angiography. Color Doppler imaging was used to measure the maximum and minimum velocities of the central retinal vein, peak systolic/end-diastolic velocities of blood flows, and pulsatility index and resistivity index values in the central retinal artery, nasal/temporal posterior ciliary arteries (NPCA/TPCA) and ophthalmic artery. The t test for paired samples was used for comparing retrobulbar blood flow values before and after intravitreal ranibizumab (Lucentis®) injection in the study and control groups. RESULTS There was a statistically significant (p < 0.05) difference between the pre-injection and post-injection end-diastolic velocities of the NPCA and TPCA and resistivity index values of TPCA. The other parameters showed no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION Our results show that intravitreal ranibizumab injection increases retrobulbar blood flow.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the retroequatorial recession technique in the surgical treatment of nystagmus and associated strabismus. METHOD The effect of large recessions of four horizontal extraocular muscles was analyzed qualitatively in seven patients with congenital nystagmus. RESULTS The ages of the patients ranged between 12 and 42 years (mean, 21.5 years). Of the seven patients, four had motor and three had sensory nystagmus. Visual acuity increased in five (71.4%) patients. Planned recovery of associated strabismus was attained in six patients (85.7%). In five patients who had abnormal head position, the head positions and nystagmus intensities were found to be decreased. No postoperative complication, such as diplopia, was encountered. CONCLUSION The retroequatorial recession technique is preferable in patients who have congenital nystagmus, especially in the presence of horizontal squint associated with low visual acuity, because of its success in increasing visual acuity and decreasing the amplitude of nystagmus, its reversibility, making posssible new operations in the future, as well as the absence of any significant complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the patterns of cell division, movement and shape during early stages of development of the chick embryo retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells and to evaluate the morphology of dissociated embryonic cells with regard to their proliferation capacity. METHODS We conducted this study at the Department of Histology and Embryology, Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey, between 2002 and 2003. We isolated the cells from chick embryos. We analyzed the images of the embryonic cells originated from neuroepithelia using a computer-based time-lapse acquisition system attached to a differential interference contrast microscope. RESULTS Retinal pigmented epithelial cells, despite being dissociated, depict a colony-type growth. Cells in the periphery of the colony and those outside the colony showed a tendency to proliferate and migrate and retained contact with the neighboring cells during division. Characteristics of cytokinesis were separation from the neighboring cell while retaining an attachment point, became rounded, moved up and started to shake and ascend to disseminate to the substrate to complete the division. The round-up stage was non-significantly shorter when the cell was closer to the center of the colony. Cells that were in the periphery of, or outside the colony had a round-up time of over one hour while cytokinesis-to-adhesion time was around 5 minutes. However, when we found the cells in the center of the colony, the times were half-an-hour and 1.5 hours for the daughter cells, a 2-fold difference between daughter cells with regard to the duration of attachment. CONCLUSION Cell division, migration and proliferation are complex procedures influenced by growth factors, cell adhesion, matrix molecules underneath and the signal mechanisms and can be studied in detail using time-lapse microscopy, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the hypothesis that primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is associated with a common insertion-deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene. METHODS ACE I/D polymorphism was investigated in a control group of healthy subjects (n = 101) and in a group of patients diagnosed with POAG (n = 104). Polymerase chain reaction detection of I/D polymorphism was used to determine the presence of the two ACE alleles in the groups. RESULTS Neither the I/D genotype distributions nor the allele frequencies differed significantly between POAG and control subjects (DD genotype 34.6 vs. 39.6%; ID genotype 53.9 vs. 40.6%; II genotype 11.5 vs. 19.8%, p = 0.1; D allele 61.5 vs. 60%; I allele 38.5 vs. 40%, p = 0.8). CONCLUSION We could not identify a possible association of the I/D polymorphism in the ACE gene with POAG, however further studies with larger patient numbers in different populations are required to clarify the role of ACE gene in susceptibility to POAG.

Abstract
Ectopic thyroid gland (ETG) is a rare entity and can be seen anywhere in the route of descending gland. It is much rarer when encountered away from the midline. Dual ETG is such a rare entity that only a few have been reported in the literature. ETGs not only cause thyroid dysfunction, most commonly hypothyroidism and rarely hyperthyroidism, but also frequent local symptoms. Therapeutic options change according to patients' co-morbid diseases, age, size of goiter and presence of local symptoms. Graves' disease is very rarely detected in a patient with ectopic thyroid. There is no report in literature concerning ectopic thyroid presenting with Graves' disease and unilateral ophthalmopathy. We describe a case with dual ETG and Graves' disease and unilateral ophthalmopathy: it is the first reported in literature.

Abstract
Ocular manifestations in patients with psoriasis vulgaris have been investigated in only a small number of studies. Our purpose was to identify tear film function and ocular pathologies associated with psoriasis vulgaris in patients who had received neither oral retinoids nor phototherapy. We examined 62 eyes of 31 patients with psoriasis and 60 eyes of 30 age-and-sex matched healthy volunteers. In addition to complete ocular and dermatological examination, tear film function (i.e., tear secretion and tear film stability) were assessed by the Schirmer-I test, as well as by tear film break-up time. None of the controls had any ocular abnormalities, whereas 67.74% of patients with psoriasis had various anterior segment pathologies (P<0.00009). The most prevalent finding was chronic blepharoconjunctivitis (64.5%), as the only pathology (n=9) or in association with other findings, including nonspecific corneal opacities (n=4), cataract (n=3), both corneal opacities and cataract (n=2), and corneal pigment dispersion (n=2). The Schirmer-I test results revealed comparable mean values in the patient group (9.8+-4.2 mm) and in the controls (11.2+-3.7 mm; P=0.078). However, mean tear film break-up time was significantly shorter in the patients (7.2+-2.5 sec) than in the healthy persons (11.7+-3.1 sec; P=0.001). In agreement with some previous reports, our findings clearly demonstrated that early ocular involvement occurs in patients with psoriasis vulgaris, irrespective of the history of previous therapeutic modalities (e.g., retinoid therapy and phototherapy). Thus, the present findings are suggestive of the contributory role of primary etiologic factors of psoriasis in the pathogenesis of ocular changes in patients with psoriasis vulgaris.

Abstract
This prospective study was carried out in the department of infectious diseases of Gaziantep University between January 1997 and December 1999 to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory features of brucellosis in south-eastern Turkey. One hundred and twenty consecutive patients with active brucellosis were enrolled. The commonest way of transmission was ingestion of milk products from diseased animals. Brucella melitensis was isolated in the specimens of 31 (45.5%) of 68 patients. The commonest abnormalities on physical examination were fever (66.6%), hepatomegaly (63.3%) and splenomegaly (56.6%). Osteoarticular involvement was found in 34 patients (28.3%). Fifteen (12.5%) patients had ocular involvement. Hepatitis, orchiepididymitis, pulmonary involvement and meningitis were found in one (0.8%), four (6.8%), three (2.5%) and one (0.8) patient, respectively. The commonest haematological abnormalities were relative lymphomonocytosis (71.6%) and anaemia (36.6%). In conclusion, brucellosis continues to be a common health problem in communities where the consumption of unpasteurised dairy products is common. Since prevention is as important as early diagnosis in reducing the morbidity of brucellosis, we suggest that improving current health policies with additional educational programmes is essential.
