Abstract
In the central nervous system neurotensin (NT) acts as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. It was shown that NT has positive reinforcing effects after its direct microinjection into the ventral tegmental area. The central nucleus of amygdala (CeA), part of the limbic system, plays an important role in learning, memory, regulation of feeding, anxiety and emotional behavior. By means of immunohistochemical and radioimmune methods it was shown that the amygdaloid body is relatively rich in NT immunoreactive elements and NT receptors. The aim of our study was to examine the possible effects of NT on reinforcement and anxiety in the CeA. In conditioned place preference test male Wistar rats were microinjected bilaterally with 100 or 250 ng NT in volume of 0.4 microl or 35 ng neurotensin receptor 1 (NTS1) antagonist SR 48692 alone, or NTS1 antagonist 15 min before 100 ng NT treatment. Hundred or 250 ng NT significantly increased the time rats spent in the treatment quadrant. Prior treatment with the non-peptide NTS1 antagonist blocked the effects of NT. Antagonist itself did not influence the reinforcing effect. In elevated plus maze test we did not find differences among the groups as far as the anxiety index (time spent on the open arms) was concerned. Our results suggest that in the rat ACE NT has positive reinforcing effects. We clarified that NTS1s are involved in this action. It was also shown that NT does not influence anxiety behavior.

Abstract
The tachykinin NK1 receptor was suggested to be involved in psychiatric disorders, but its antagonists have failed to be effective as antidepressants in clinical trials. Hemokinin-1 (HK-1), the newest tachykinin, is present in several brain regions and activates the NK1 receptor similarly to substance P (SP), but acts also through other mechanisms. Therefore, we investigated the roles of the Tac4 gene-derived HK-1 in comparison with SP and neurokinin A (NKA) encoded by the Tac1 gene, as well as the NK1 receptor in anxiety and depression-like behaviors in mice. Mice lacking SP/NKA, HK-1 or the NK1 receptor (Tac1-/-, Tac4-/-, Tacr1-/-, respectively) compared to C57Bl/6 wildtypes (WT), and treatment with the NK1 antagonist CP99994 were used in the experiments. Anxiety was evaluated in the light-dark box (LDB) and the elevated plus maze (EPM), locomotor activity in the open field (OFT) tests. Hedonic behavior was assessed in the sucrose preference test (SPT), depression-like behavior in the tail suspension (TST) and forced swim (FST) tests. FST-induced neuronal responsiveness was evaluated with Fos immunohistochemistry in several stress-related brain regions. In the LDB, Tac4-/- mice spent significantly less, while Tacr1-/- and CP99994-treated mice spent significantly more time in the lit compartment. In the EPM only Tac4-/- showed reduced time in the open arms, but no difference was observed in any other groups. In the OFT Tac4-/- mice showed significantly reduced, while Tac1-/- and Tacr1-/- animals increased motility than the WTs, but CP99994 had no effect. NK1-/- consumed markedly more, while Tac4-/- less sucrose solution compared to WTs. In the TST and FST, Tac4-/- mice showed significantly increased immobility. However, depression-like behavior was decreased both in cases of genetic deletion and pharmacological blockade of the NK1 receptor. FST-induced neuronal activation in different nuclei involved in behavioral and neuroendocrine stress responses was significantly reduced in the brain of Tac4 -/- mice. Our results provide the first evidence for an anxiolytic and anti-depressant-like actions of HK-1 through a presently unknown target-mediated mechanism. Identification of its receptor and/or signaling pathways might open new perspectives for anxiolytic and anti-depressant therapies.

Abstract
Tridecapeptide neurotensin (NT) acts as a neurotransmitter and/or neuromodulator and plays a role in learning and reinforcement. The central nucleus of amygdala (CeA), which is relatively rich in NT and neurotensin-1 receptors (NTS1), participates in the regulation of memory and learning mechanisms. The aim of this study was to examine the possible effect of NT and NTS1 antagonist (ANT) on passive avoidance learning after their microinjection into the CeA of male wistar rats. NT significantly increased the latency time. Effect of NT was blocked by ANT pretreatment. ANT in itself had no effect. Our results show that in the rat CeA NT facilitates passive avoidance learning via NTS1.

Abstract
Several members of the RFamide peptide family are known to have role in the regulation of feeding. For example, neuropeptide FF and prolactin-releasing peptide cause anorexigenic, while 26RFa and QRFP result in orexigenic effects in rodents. I.c.v. microinjection of neuropeptide RFRP-1 significantly reduced food and water intake in chicks. However, feeding related effects of RFRP-1 have not been studied in mammals yet. The central part of amygdala (CeA) is essentially involved in the regulation of feeding and body weight. RFRP-1 positive nerve cells were detected in the rat hypothalamus and RFRP-1 immunoreactive fibers were identified in the CeA. RFRP analogs bind with relatively high affinity to the NPFF1 and NPFF2 receptors (NPFF-R). RFRP-1 has potent activity for NPFF1. Significant expression of NPFF1 was detected in the CeA. To evaluate the role of RFRP-1 in feeding regulation rats were microinjected with different doses of RFRP-1 and their food intake were quantified over a 60min period. Liquid food intake of male Wistar rats was measured after bilateral intraamygdaloid administration of RFRP-1 (25, 50 or 100ng/side, RFRP-1 dissolved in 0.15M sterile NaCl/0.4μl, respectively). The 50ng dose of RFRP-1 microinjections resulted in significant decrease of food intake. The 25 and 100ng had no effect. Action of 50ng (37.8pmol) RFRP-1 was eliminated by 20ng (41.4pmol) RF9 NPFF-R antagonist pretreatment. In open-field test 50ng RFRP-1 did not modify spontaneous locomotor activity and general behavior of animals did not change. Our results are the first reporting that RFRP-1 injected to the CeA result in a decrease of liquid food consumption. This is a receptor-linked effect because it was eliminated by a NPFF-R selective antagonist.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) have recently been prepared inside the pores of silica based HPLC packing materials. Detailed physical and chromatographic characterization of such a silica-MIP composite material is presented. The chromatographic peak shape obtained with the uniformly sized spherical silica-MIP composite is mainly determined by the nonlinear adsorption isotherm. Comparison of the composite with the conventional sieved and grinded bulk MIP is therefore based on the nonlinear isotherm and not on retention factors and plate numbers.

Abstract
Neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) is involved in the regulation of social and non-social behaviour. The central nucleus of amygdala (CeA), part of the limbic system, plays an important role in learning, memory, anxiety and reinforcing mechanisms. CeA has been shown to be rich in OT receptors in rodents. Our previous findings indicated that OT in the rat CeA has a dose dependent rewarding and anxiolytic effect. The aim of our present study was to examine in the CeA the possible interaction of OT and D2 dopamine (DA) receptor antagonist Sulpiride on reinforcement in place preference test and on anxiety in elevated plus maze test. Wistar rats were microinjected bilaterally with 10 ng OT. In different group of animals 4 μg D2 DA receptor antagonist was applied. Other animals received D2 DA receptor antagonist 15 min before 10 ng OT treatment or vehicle solution into the CeA. Rats receiving 10 ng OT spent significantly longer time in the treatment quadrant during the test session in conditioned place preference test. Prior treatment with D2 DA receptor antagonist blocked the rewarding effects of OT. Antagonist in itself did not influence the time rats spent in the treatment quadrant. In elevated plus maze test, rats receiving 10 ng OT spent significantly longer time on the open arms. Prior treatment with D2 DA receptor antagonist blocked the effects of OT. Our results show that DA system plays a role in positive reinforcing and anxiolytic effects of OT because D2 DA receptor antagonist can block these actions.

Abstract
The RFamide peptide family comprises a number of biologically active peptides sharing RF motif at their C-terminal end. These peptides are involved in the control of multiple physiological functions including regulation of metabolism and feeding behavior. QRFP-43 as well as its 26-aminoacid residue QRFP-26 are able to cause orexigenic effect when administered to the rodents' cerebral ventricles. QRFPs have been suggested as the endogenous ligands of the previously orphan GPR103 receptors. GPR103 receptors share amino acid identity with other receptors of neuropeptides involved in feeding (NPY, NPFF, galanin). QRFP-26 expressing neurons and binding sites are densely present in the rat medial hypothalamus (MHA), an area directly responsible for the regulation of feeding. QRFP-26 was delivered to the target area by direct intrahypothalamic microinjection, and the consumption of liquid food was measured over a 60 min period. Both doses (100 and 200 ng) significantly increased food intake. Non-specific receptor antagonist BIBP3226 eliminated the orexigenic effect caused by QRFP-26 administration. Effective doses of QRFP-26 did not modify general locomotor activity and behavioral patterns examined in the open-field test. This study is the first reporting feeding modulating effects following direct intrahypothalamic QRFP-26 administration.

Abstract
Neurotensin (NT) acts as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator in the central nervous system. NT is involved in reward and memory processes, drug addiction and also in the regulation of anxiety. The ventral pallidum (VP) receives neurotensinergic innervation from the ventral striatopallidal pathway originating from the nucleus accumbens. Positive reinforcing effects of NT in the VP had been shown recently, however the possible effects of NT on anxiety have not been examined yet. In our present experiments, the effects of NT on anxiety were investigated in the VP. In male Wistar rats bilateral microinjections of 100 ng or 250 ng NT were delivered in the volume of 0.4 μl into the VP, and elevated plus maze (EPM) test was performed. In another groups of animals, 35 ng NT-receptor 1 (NTR1) antagonist SR 48,692 was applied by itself, or microinjected 15 min before 100 ng NT treatment. Open field test (OPF) was also conducted. The 100 ng dose of NT had anxiolytic effect, but the 250 ng NT did not influence anxiety. The antagonist pretreatment inhibited the effect of NT, while the antagonist itself had no effect. In the OPF test there was no difference among the groups. Our present results show that microinjection of NT into the VP induces anxiolytic effect, which is specific to the NTR1 receptors because it can be eliminated by a specific NTR1 antagonist. It is also substantiated that neither the NT, nor the NTR1 antagonist in the VP influences locomotor activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder affecting about 1.5% of children, and its prevalence is increasing. Anxiety is one of the most common comorbid signs of ASD. Despite the increasing prevalence, the pathophysiology of ASD is still poorly understood, and its proper treatment has not been defined yet. In order to develop new therapeutic approaches, the valproate- (VPA) induced rodent model of autism can be an appropriate tool. Oxytocin (OT), as a prosocial hormone, may ameliorate some symptoms of ASD. METHODS In the present study, we investigated the possible anxiolytic effect of intraamygdaloid OT on VPA-treated rats using the elevated plus maze test. RESULTS Our results show that male Wistar rats prenatally exposed to VPA spent significantly less time in the open arms of the elevated plus maze apparatus and performed significantly less head dips from the open arms. Bilateral OT microinjection into the central nucleus of the amygdala increased the time spent in the open arms and the number of head dips and reduced the anxiety to the healthy control level. An OT receptor antagonist blocked the anxiolytic effects of OT. The antagonist by itself did not influence the time rats spent in the open arms. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that intraamygdaloid OT has anxiolytic effects in autistic rats.

Abstract
Rice husk derived activated carbons doped with nitrogen have been studied using low temperature nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimetry, thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass-spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been shown that N-doped activated carbon produced by high temperature treatment of the starting material soaked with urea, has a significantly higher anion exchange capacity than the other samples studied, which correlates with its higher adsorption capacity towards nitrate ion removal from aqueous solutions with the initial concentration of 5 and 15 ppm.

Abstract
The amygdaloid body (AMY) plays an important role in memory, learning and reward-related processes. RFRP-1 immunoreactive fibers and NPFF receptors were identified in the AMY, and previously we verified that RFRP-1 infused into the central nucleus of AMY (CeA) induced place preference. The aim of the present study was to examine the possible effects of RFRP-1 in the CeA on passive avoidance learning. Male Wistar rats were examined in two-compartment passive avoidance paradigm. Animals were shocked with 0.5mA current and subsequently were microinjected bilaterally with 50ng or 100ng RFRP-1 in volume of 0.4μl, or 20ng NPFF receptor antagonist RF9 (ANT) alone, or antagonist 15min before 50ng RFRP-1 treatments into the CeA. Fifty nanogram dose of RFRP-1 significantly increased the step-through latency time, the 100ng RFRP-1 and the ANT alone were ineffective. The effect of 50ng RFRP-1 was eliminated by the ANT pretreatment. Our results suggest that intraamygdaloid RFRP-1 enhances learning processes and memory in aversive situations and this effect can specifically be prevented by ANT pretreatment.

Abstract
In order to elucidate whether cytokine mechanisms of the cingulate cortex (cctx) are important in the central regulation of homeostasis, in the present study, feeding-metabolic effects of direct bilateral microinjection of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) into the cctx of the rat have been investigated. Short- (2h), medium (12h) and long-term (24h) food and water intakes and body temperature were measured after the intracerebral administration of this primary cytokine or vehicle solution, with or without paracetamol pretreatment. The effect of IL-1β on the blood glucose level of animals was examined in glucose tolerance test (GTT), and concentrations of relevant plasma metabolites (total cholesterol, HDL, LDH, triglycerides, uric acid) were additionally also determined following the above microinjections. In contrast to causing no major alteration in the food and water intakes, the cytokine treatment evoked significant increase in the body temperature of the rats. Prostaglandin-mediated mechanisms were shown to have important role in the mode of this action of IL-1β, since paracetamol pretreatment partially prevented the development of the above mentioned hyperthermia. In the GTT, no considerable difference was observed between the blood glucose levels of the cytokine treated and control animals. Following IL-1β microinjection, however, significant decrease of HDL and total cholesterol was found. Our present findings indicate that elucidating the IL-1β mediated homeostatic control mechanisms in the cingulate cortex may lead to the better understanding not only the regulatory entities of the healthy organism but also those found in obesity, diabetes mellitus and other worldwide rapidly spreading feeding-metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Thermoresponsive hydrogels have enormous potential e.g., as sensors, actuators, and pollution control remedies or in drug delivery systems. Nevertheless, their application is often restricted by physical limitations (poor mechanical strength and uncontrolled thermal response). Composite systems may offer a means of overcoming these limitations. This paper presents a systematic study of the structure and dynamics of graphene oxide-poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) composite systems, and investigates the effect of the nanoparticle filler content on the mechanical and swelling properties of the systems. A combination of macroscopic (swelling and elastic modulus) and microscopic (differential scanning microcalorimetry, small angle neutron scattering and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy) investigations reveals that the architecture of the polymer network is modified by chain nucleation at the surface of the GO platelets, and these form a percolating network inside the gel. Our results show that the elastic modulus of the gels is reinforced by the filler, but the mobility of the polymer chains in the swollen state is practically unaffected. The macroscopic deswelling of the composites, however, is slowed by the kinetics of ordering in the GO network.
