Extrinsic surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection of influenza A virus enhanced by two-dimensional gold@silver core–shell nanoparticle arrays

A surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based biosensor using a direct immunoassay platform was demonstrated for influenza A detection. The sensitivity was improved ~4 times by using a well-tuned Au@Ag 2D array instead of a flat Au film.

Addressing Water Contamination and Associated Health Issues through Community-Based Interventions: A Case Study in Khon Kaen Province

A recent study conducted in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand, evaluated the effectiveness of a technology-assisted intervention aimed at improving water quality and addressing related health issues in communities around key water bodies. The intervention targeted health concerns associated with water contamination, including chronic kidney diseases, skin conditions, hypertension, and neurological symptoms. The study included water quality assessments and health evaluations of 586 residents and implemented a Learning Innovation Platform (LIP) across 13 communities. Results showed significant improvements in the community, including a decrease in hypertension and skin-related health issues, as well as enhanced community awareness and proficiency in implementing simple water quality assessments and treatment. The study demonstrated the value of a comprehensive, technology-driven community approach, effectively enhancing water quality and health outcomes, and promoting greater community awareness and self-sufficiency in managing environmental health risks.

Colorimetric Sensor for Cr(VI) Ion Detection in Tap Water Using a Combination of AuNPs and AgNPs

Colorimetric sensors are a promising technique for the simple screening of water, food, and environmental samples contaminated with interferents, allowing for color changes to be observed with the naked eye or a spectrophotometer. In this study, a colorimetric sensor for the selective detection of hexavalent chromium ion (Cr(VI)) contamination in water was developed. A combination of sodium borohydride-coated gold and citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (Na-AuNPs/cit-AgNPs) was employed as a colorimetric probe. Upon the addition of Cr(VI)-contaminated tap water in the colorimetric probe solution, the color sequentially transitioned from its initial orange to dark reddish-purple, dark purplish-red, dark blue-violet, and gray. This colorimetric strategy relies on AgNP dissolution and AuNP aggregation in the presence of the Cr(VI) ions. The dissolution of AgNPs is evidenced by the reduction of the characteristic peak of AgNPs at 400 nm, while the aggregation of AuNPs leads to a red shift in the absorption band at 514 nm, accompanied by broad absorption in the 500-700 nm range. The limits of detections were found to be 22.9 and 50 ppb using a spectrometer and by visual observation, respectively. The synthesized AuNPs and AgNPs are very stable in the presence of media containing complicated ions. We further demonstrated the practical applicability of the developed system for detecting Cr(VI) in real samples, including natural water and artificial urine, highlighting its potential for addressing Cr(VI) contamination in practical scenarios.

A label-free and selective SERS-based sensor for determination of ampicillin contamination in water using a fabric gold–silver alloy substrate with a handheld Raman spectrometer

A plasmonic Au–Ag alloy fabric substrate is developed via in situ self-assembly of Au–Ag alloy NPs on muslin fabric. An appropriate molar ratio of Au and Ag and type of substrate are proved to be key factors for selective detection of ampicillin.
