Abstract
Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (ARs) can be critical for carnivores, due to their widespread use and impacts. However, although many studies explored the impacts of ARs on small and mesocarnivores, none assessed the extent to which they could contaminate large carnivores in anthropized landscapes. We filled this gap by exploring spatiotemporal trends in grey wolf (Canis lupus) exposure to ARs in central and northern Italy, by subjecting a large sample of dead wolves (n = 186) to the LC-MS/MS method. Most wolves (n = 115/186, 61.8 %) tested positive for ARs (1 compound, n = 36; 2 compounds, n = 47; 3 compounds, n = 16; 4 or more compounds, n = 16). Bromadiolone, brodifacoum and difenacoum, were the most common compounds, with brodifacoum and bromadiolone being the ARs that co-occurred the most (n = 61). Both the probability of testing positive for multiple ARs and the concentration of brodifacoum, and bromadiolone in the liver, systematically increased in wolves that were found at more anthropized sites. Moreover, wolves became more likely to test positive for ARs through time, particularly after 2020. Our results underline that rodent control, based on ARs, increases the risks of unintentional poisoning of non-target wildlife. However, this risk does not only involve small and mesocarnivores, but also large carnivores at the top of the food chain, such as wolves. Therefore, rodent control is adding one further conservation threat to endangered large carnivores in anthropized landscapes of Europe, whose severity could increase over time and be far higher than previously thought. Large-scale monitoring schemes for ARs in European large carnivores should be devised as soon as possible.

Abstract
Caseous lymphadenitis is a chronic debilitating disease typical of small ruminants, but it is also noted in several other domestic and wild species. In this report, we present the first documented case in Italy of pseudotuberculosis in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus, Linnaeus 1758) found dead in the mountains of Forlì-Cesena province, Emilia Romagna region. The carcass underwent necropsy according to standard protocols, revealing generalized lymphadenopathy and severe apostematous pneumonia with multifocal and encapsulated abscesses. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated from the lung parenchyma, lymph nodes and abscesses. Additionally, severe parasitic bronchopneumonia of the caudal lobes and gastrointestinal strongyle infestation were detected. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of CLA referable to C. pseudotubercolosis in a roe deer in Italy.

Abstract
This study analyzed data from six years (2014-2019) of official controls in the Emilia-Romagna region (northern Italy) to investigate the frequencies of human pathogens and chemical hazards in foods during production and distribution. Campylobacter spp. was the most prevalent pathogen, isolated in 4.4% of the 1,078 food samples examined, followed by Salmonella spp. (2.8%), Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) (1.9%) and Listeria monocytogenes (0.9%). Salmonella serotyping showed that the isolates belonged to the serotypes most commonly isolated from humans in Emilia-Romagna. These serotypes were: S. Infantis (34.8%), mostly isolated from chicken, monophasic S. Typhimurium (1,4, (Anonymous, 2013),12:i:-) (12.6%), S. Bredeney (8.9%) and S. Derby (8.6%). No Clostridium botulinum, Yersinia spp. and Shigella spp. were isolated. No positivity was detected for hepatitis A virus, while 5.1% samples taken in the production phase of the food chain were found to be contaminated with norovirus. The chemical analyses identified environmental contaminants within legal limits (heavy metals, 0.6% positive overall; mycotoxins, 0.4% positive overall), analytes subjected to monitoring (perfluoro-alkyl substances (PFASs), 6.2% positive overall; inorganic arsenic, no positives overall) and process contaminants and additives within legal limits (acrylamide, 9.6% positive overall; permitted or non-permitted additives, 0.9% positive overall). Only one sample showed dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at levels higher than the legal limits. The monitoring by competent authorities (CA) of food contamination can generate useful data that can be used as a basis for estimating the exposure to different food contaminants over time and for evaluating the effects of control measures on the contamination of food.

Abstract
In the last decade, an upsurge of human leishmaniasis has been reported in the Emilia-Romagna region, Northeast Italy. Epidemiologic data have raised doubts about the role of dogs as the main reservoirs for Leishmania infantum. In the present study, a total of 1,077 wild animals were screened for L. infantum DNA in earlobe and spleen samples from 2019 to 2022. The lymph nodes were tested only in 23 animals already positive in the earlobe and/or spleen. A total of 71 (6.6%) animals resulted positive in at least one of the sampled tissues, including 3/18 (16.7%) wolves, 6/39 (15.4%) European hares, 38/309 (12.3%) roe deer, 1/11 (9.1%) red deer, 8/146 (4.9%) wild boars, 13/319 (4.1%) red foxes, 1/54 (1.9%) porcupine, and 1/59 (1.7%) European badger. Most of the infected animals (62/71) tested positive only in the earlobe tissue, only four animals (two roe deer and two wild boars) tested positive only in the spleen, and five animals (three roe deer and two red foxes) resulted positive for both tissues. L. infantum DNA was detected in the lymph nodes of 6/23 animals. L. infantum detection occurred in all seasons associated with low real-time PCR Ct values. Further research is needed in order to clarify the role of wildlife in the re-emerging focus of leishmaniasis in Northeast Italy.

Abstract
Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is among the most relevant and widespread immunosuppressive agents, which can severely damage poultry farming by causing direct losses, predisposing the host to secondary diseases and reducing the efficacy of vaccination protocols against other infections. IBDV has thus been the object of intense control activities, largely based on routine vaccination. However, the need for protecting animals from the infection in the first period of the production cycle, when the bursa susceptibility is higher, clashes with the blanketing effect of maternally derived antibodies. To overcome this issue, other strategies have been developed besides live attenuated vaccines, including vector vaccines and immune complex (icx) ones. The present study aims to investigate, in field conditions, the efficacy of these approaches in preventing IBDV infection in laying chickens vaccinated with either live attenuated, vector or immune complex (icx) vaccines. For this purpose, a multicentric study involving 481 farms located in 11 European countries was organized and IBDV infection diagnosis and strain characterization was performed at 6 weeks of age using a molecular approach. Vaccine strains were commonly detected in flocks vaccinated with live or icx vaccines. However, a significantly higher number of field strains (characterized as very virulent IBDVs) was detected in flocks vaccinated with vector vaccines, suggesting their lower capability of preventing bursal colonization. Different from vector vaccines, live and icx ones have a marked bursal tropism. It can thus be speculated that vaccine virus replication in these sites could limit vvIBDV replication by direct competition or because of a more effective activation of innate immunity. Although such different behavior doesn't necessarily affect clinical protection, further studies should be performed to evaluate if vvIBDV replication could still be associated with subclinical losses and/or for viral circulation in a “vaccinated environment” could drive viral evolution and favor the emergence of vaccine-escape variants.

Abstract
Simple Summary Colibacillosis is a disease of great importance in the poultry industry, but many of its features and characteristics still need to be identified. This survey on avian Escherichia coli investigated the correlation between the presence of specific virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance features and serogroups. The results highlighted that half of the tested strains were avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). Moreover, a high prevalence of two specific serogroups was detected, namely, O2 and O88. Finally, antimicrobial resistance was lower than in other studies. Further investigations of APEC strains’ antimicrobial resistance features would support farmers, veterinarians and local authorities in planning actions for a better control of colibacillosis in poultry production. Abstract Colibacillosis is the most common bacterial disease in the poultry industry. The isolation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains with multiple resistance to various classes of antimicrobials has been increasing in recent years. In this study, antimicrobial resistance features, serotyping and the presence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) virulence genes were investigated on a total of 71 E. coli strains isolated during outbreaks of colibacillosis in laying hens. The correlation between these features was evaluated. The most frequently isolated serogroups were O2 and O88. Resistance was often detected with nalidixic acid (49%) and ampicillin (38%), while all strains were sensitive to ceftiofur and florfenicol. Overall, 25% of the isolates showed resistance to at least three or more antimicrobial classes (multidrug-resistant strains), and 56% of the isolates were defined as APEC strains (due to the presence of at least five virulence genes). Correlation between the different parameters (virulence genes, serogroup and antimicrobial resistance) did not reveal relevant associations. The comparison of the obtained results with those of similar studies highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring in order to have a better understanding of colibacillosis. An evaluation of the national epidemiological situation would allow, especially with regard to antimicrobial resistance, to focus on the right measures in order to prioritize the available resources for effective disease control.

Abstract
Simple Summary Wild boars and feral pigs are underinvestigated hosts for influenza A viruses (IAVs). This study confirmed and evaluated viral circulation in the Emilia-Romagna wild boar population between 2017 and 2022. Samples were collected at post mortems and screened for IAVs; 0.37% of the tested animals provided positive results. Positive samples were subtyped, isolated, and genotyped via full-genome sequencing. The results highlight the co-circulation of the same viral genotypes in overlapping years in both pigs and wild boars in the same geographical area. Considering the role of domestic and wild Sus scrofa species in the IAVs’ ecology, surveillance against these viruses in the wild boar population needs to be implemented. Abstract A systematic surveillance against influenza A viruses (IAVs) in the Suidae population is essential, considering their role as IAV mixing vessels. However, the viral circulation in wild Sus scrofa species is poorly investigated in comparison to the knowledge of IAV infection dynamics in domestic pigs. This study investigated the circulation and the genetic diversity of wild boars’ IAVs detected in the Emilia-Romagna region (2017–2022). A total of 4605 lung samples were screened via an M gene real-time RT-PCR for SwIAV; positive samples were subtyped by multiplex RT-PCR, and viral isolation was attempted. Isolated strains (3 out of the 17 positives) were fully sequenced to evaluate viral genotypic diversity. H1N1 was the most frequently detected subtype, with identification of H1pdm09N1 and H1avN1. Whole-genome phylogenetic analysis revealed SwIAVs belonging to different genotypes, with different genetic combinations, and highlighted the simultaneous circulation of the same genotypes in both pigs and wild boars, supporting the hypothesis of SwIAV spillover events at the wildlife–livestock interface. This study represents an update on the wild boar SwIAV Italian situation, and the strains’ complete genome analysis showed an evolving and interesting situation that deserves further investigation.

Abstract
The extensive use of antibiotics has contributed to the current antibiotic resistance crisis. Livestock infections of Salmonella spp, Clostridium spp. and E. coli antimicrobial-resistant bacteria represent a public threat to human and animal health. To reduce the incidence of these zoonoses, essential oils (EOs) could be effective antibiotic alternatives. This study aims at identifying EOs safe for use, effective both in complementary therapy and in the environmental sanitization of intensive farming. Natural products were chemo-characterized by gas chromatography. Three S. Typhimurium, three C. perfringens and four E. coli strains isolated from poultry and swine farms were used to assess the antimicrobial properties of nine EOs and a modified GR-OLI (mGR-OLI). The toxicity of the most effective ones (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Cz; Origanum vulgare, Ov) was also evaluated on porcine spermatozoa and Galleria mellonella larvae. Cz, Ov and mGR-OLI showed the strongest antimicrobial activity; their volatile components were also able to significantly inhibit the growth of tested strains. In vitro, Ov toxicity was slightly lower than Cz, while it showed no toxicity on G. mellonella larvae. In conclusion, the study confirms the importance of evaluating natural products to consolidate the idea of safe EO applications in reducing and preventing intensive livestock infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enterocytes exert an absorptive and protective function in the intestine, and they encounter many different challenging factors such as feed, bacteria, and parasites. An intestinal epithelial in vitro model can help to understand how enterocytes are affected by these factors and contribute to the development of strategies against pathogens. RESULTS The present study describes a novel method to culture and maintain primary chicken enterocytes and their characterization by immunofluorescence and biomolecular approaches. Starting from 19-day-old chicken embryos it was possible to isolate viable intestinal cell aggregates that can expand and produce a self-maintaining intestinal epithelial cell population that survives until 12 days in culture. These cells resulted positive in immunofluorescence to Cytokeratin 18, Zonula occludens 1, Villin, and Occludin that are common intestinal epithelial markers, and negative to Vimentin that is expressed by endothelial cells. Cells were cultured also on Transwell® permeable supports and trans-epithelial electrical resistance, was measured. This value gradually increased reaching 64 Ω*cm2 7 days after seeding and it remained stable until day 12. CONCLUSIONS Based on these results it was confirmed that it is possible to isolate and maintain chicken intestinal epithelial cells in culture and that they can be suitable as in vitro intestinal model for further studies.

Abstract
Salmonella spp. represent a public health concern for humans and animals due to the increase of antibiotic resistances. In this scenario, the use of essential oils (EOs) could be a valid tool against Salmonella contamination of meat. This work compares the in vitro effectiveness of an Italian mixture of feed additives based on EOs (GR-OLI) with EO of Origanum vulgare L., recently admitted by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for animal use. Twenty-nine Salmonella serotypes isolated from poultry and pig farms were used to assess GR-OLI and O. vulgare EO antimicrobial propeties. O. vulgare EO was active on the disaggregation of mature biofilm, while GR-OLI was capable of inhibiting biofilm formation and disaggregating preformed biofilm. Furthermore, GR-OLI inhibited bacterial adhesion to Caco-2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Both products showed inhibition of bacterial growth at all time points tested. Finally, the synergistic action of GR-OLI with commonly used antibiotics against resistant strains was investigated. In conclusion, the mixture could be used both to reduce the meat contamination of Salmonella spp. before slaughter, and in synergy with low doses of ciprofloxacin against resistant strains. Although EOs as feed additives are already used in animal husbandry, no scientific study has ever highlighted their real antimicrobial potential.

Abstract
Formaggio di Fossa di Sogliano is a traditional Italian Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheese ripened for a minimum of 5 months, with the feature of a ripening of at least 80 to at most 100 days in pits, digged into tuffaceous rocks according to medieval tradition of Italy. In this study, a challenge test using Listeria innocua as a surrogate of Listeria monocytogenes was performed, with the aim of increasing knowledge concerning the impact of the Fossa cheese process, and especially of the traditional ripening process of this PDO, on the behaviour of L. monocytogenes. Pasteurized milk was experimentally inoculated with 4.5 log CFU/mL cocktail by three L. innocua strains, and L. innocua and Mesophilic Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) counts as well as the evolution of temperatures, pH and aw values were monitored throughout the manufacturing and ripening processes. Throughout the ripening in maturation room a constant temperature of 8°C was observed reaching a temperature between 10 and 15.5°C during ripening into pit. In the final products data for LAB concentration, pH and aw values were roughly in accordance with literature, even if some differences were, probably due to variability of artisanal cheese productions. The numbers of L. innocua showed a slight decrease but remained stable until the end of ripening in maturation room, whereas a significant reduction of the microorganism was observed in the final product, at the end of the ripening into the pit. The findings give scientific evidence that the process of this PDO prevented the L. innocua growth, allowing us to speculate a similar behaviour of L. monocytogenes. Based on this study, the recommendation to extend as much as possible the ripening into pit (from 80 to 100 days) was provided to food business operators as a risk mitigation strategy to be implemented.

Abstract
The anticoccidial activity of thymol, carvacrol, and saponins was assessed in an in vitro model of coccidiosis. Eimeria spp. sporozoites were collected from field samples, characterized, and used for 2 different invasion assays on Madin-Darby Bovine Kidney cells (MDBK). The cells were challenged with 5 × 104 sporozoites without (control) or with various treatments: saponins (10 ppm), thymol, and carvacrol (7 ppm each) or a combination of saponins, thymol, and carvacrol at 2 doses; MIX 1 (saponins 5 ppm, thymol 3.5 ppm, and carvacrol 3.5 ppm) and MIX 2 (saponins 10 ppm, thymol 7 ppm, and carvacrol 7 ppm). The treated cells were incubated at 37°C for 24 h (invasion assay 1) and for 2, 24, and 48 h (invasion assay 2). The efficiency of invasion was determined by counting the sporozoites left in the supernatant that were not able to invade the cells, whereas intracellular Eimeria DNA was detected by qPCR to confirm the data. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, and differences were considered significant when P value was ≤0.05. Data from invasion assay 1 showed that the thymol and carvacrol-containing blends significantly reduced invasion, especially in combination with saponins at the highest dose. Saponins alone did not have a strong inhibiting activity but acted synergistically with the other molecules. Interestingly, in invasion assay 2, it was found that the effect of the highest dose of the blend of saponins, thymol, and carvacrol was already visible at 2 h postinfection, whereas the other treatments were significantly successful at 24 h postinfection. The invasion assay protocol was designed to screen molecules in vitro starting from field fecal samples, and it can represent a potential tool in Eimeria research. Moreover, this study shows that invasion in MDBK cells by Eimeria sporozoites is inhibited in presence of thymol, carvacrol, and saponins, thus highlighting the anticoccidial potential of these compounds.

Abstract
Marek's disease (MD) is a lymphoproliferative disease caused by Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2), which primarily affects chickens. However, the virus is also able to induce tumours in turkeys, albeit less frequently than in chickens. This study reports the molecular characterization of a GaHV-2 strain detected in a flock of Italian meat-type turkeys exhibiting visceral lymphomas. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the meq gene revealed that the turkey GaHV-2 has molecular features of high virulence and genetic similarity with GaHV-2 strains recently detected in Italian commercial and backyard chickens. GaHV-2 is ubiquitous among chickens despite vaccination, and chicken-to-turkey transmission is hypothesized due to the presence of broilers in neighbouring pens.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS A GaHV-2 strain from Italian turkeys was molecularly characterized.The turkey strain presented molecular characteristics of high virulence in its meq gene.The turkey strain was closely related to previously detected chicken strains.

Abstract
Simple Summary The poultry industry needs to replace antibiotics with natural or synthetic compounds able to overcome problems linked to the development of bacterial resistance. Tannins and short chain fatty acids are valid alternatives to contrast the growth of pathogens. However, tannins may induce detrimental effects on animal performances, especially in monogastrics, causing damage on gut villi. In contrast, short chain fatty acids are very efficient in influencing positively the morphology of small intestine wall. Hence, the aim of this trial was to develop a feeding strategy for broiler rearing, based on the use of chestnut tannins and short chain fatty acids administered as blends. No differences in animal performances or in meat quality were found among feeding groups. The results suggested that the mix of these supplements did not have negative effects on the productive performances, representing a promising alternative to antibiotics. However, further investigation is needed to better understand the effects of these supplements on animals in stress conditions. Abstract Chestnut tannins (CT) and saturated short medium chain fatty acids (SMCFA) are valid alternatives to contrast the growth of pathogens in poultry rearing, representing a valid alternative to antibiotics. However, the effect of their blends has never been tested. Two blends of CT extract and Sn1-monoglycerides of SMCFA (SN1) were tested in vitro against the proliferation of Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella typhymurium, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni. The tested concentrations were: 3.0 g/kg of CT; 3.0 g/kg of SN1; 2.0 g/kg of CT and 1.0 g/kg of SN1; 1.0 g/kg of CT and 2.0 g/kg of SN1. Furthermore, their effect on broiler performances and meat quality was evaluated in vivo: one-hundred Ross 308 male birds were fed a basal diet with no supplement (control group) or supplemented with CT or SN1 or their blends at the same concentration used in the in vitro trial. The in vitro assay confirmed the effectiveness of the CT and SN1 mixtures in reducing the growth of the tested bacteria while the in vivo trial showed that broiler performances, animal welfare and meat quality were not negatively affected by the blends, which could be a promising alternative in replacing antibiotics in poultry production.

Abstract
The genetic variability of Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is one of the main challenges for its control, hindering not only the development of effective vaccination strategies but also its classification and, consequently, epidemiology understanding. The 624/I and Q1 genotypes, now recognized to be part of the GI-16 lineage, represent an excellent example of the practical consequences of IBV molecular epidemiology limited knowledge. In fact, being their common origin unrecognized for a long time, independent epidemiological pictures were drawn for the two genotypes. To fix this misinterpretation, the present study reconstructs the history, population dynamics and spreading patterns of GI-16 lineage as a whole using a phylodynamic approach. A collection of worldwide available hypervariable region 1 and 2 (HVR12) and 3 (HVR3) sequences of the S1 protein was analysed together with 258 HVR3 sequences obtained from samples collected in Italy (the country where this genotype was initially identified) since 1963. The results demonstrate that after its emergence at the beginning of the XX century, GI-16 was able to persist until present days in Italy. Approximately in the late 1980s, it migrated to Asia, which became the main nucleus for further spreading to Middle East, Europe and especially South America, likely through multiple introduction events. A remarkable among-country diffusion was also demonstrated in Asia and South America. Interestingly, although most of the recent Italian GI-16 strains originated from ancestral viruses detected in the same country, a couple were closely related to Chinese ones, supporting a backward viral flow from China to Italy. Besides to the specific case-study results, this work highlights the misconceptions that originate from the lack of a unified nomenclature and poor molecular epidemiology data generation and sharing. This shortcoming appears particularly relevant since the described scenario could likely be shared by many other IBV genotypes and pathogens in general.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate some pathogenic characters of Salmonella enterica strains isolated from poultry. METHODS Twenty-three genetically distinct Salmonella enterica strains, of different serovars and pulsotype, were examined for virulence traits. Resistance to gastric acid environment was estimated by measuring the percentage of survived bacterial cells after exposure for 2 h to a synthetic gastric juice. Strains were analyzed with PCR for the presence of the following virulence genes: mgtC and rhuM located on SPI-3, sopB and pipB located on SPI-5, Salmonella virulence plasmid (spv) R (spvR), spvB and spvC located on Salmonella plasmid virulence and sodCI, sopE, and gipA located on prophage. Finally, resistance to 21 antibiotics was tested with Kirby-Bauer method. RESULTS A percentage of 82.60% of strains were resistant to gastric environment after induction and 60.87% of the strains exhibited constitutive resistance too. Nineteen different virulence profiles were detected. The phage related genes sodCI and sopE and the plasmid mediated operon spvR, spvB and spvC (spvRBC) were detected in 82.60%, 47.82% and 52.17% of strains, respectively. Typhimurium and Enteritidis strains showed the highest number of virulence genes. Twenty-one different antibiotic resistance profiles were obtained and two isolates (Typhimurium and Enteritidis) resulted sensible to all the tested molecules. The ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance profile was detected in seven isolates (30.43%). CONCLUSION Our results show that paratyphoid Salmonella strains with several characters of pathogenicity, that may be cause of severe pathology in animals and humans, are circulating among poultry.

Abstract
Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) represents one of the poultry industry major threats, particularly in high density producing countries. The emergence and spread of new IBV genotypes have frustrated the various disease control efforts implemented over time. Despite that, few comprehensive and large scale studies have been performed to understand the international and local spreading dynamics of this virus. In the present work, these phenomena were evaluated by implementing a Bayesian phylodynamic approach to reconstruct the epidemiological patterns and population history of the QX genotype (currently renamed GI-19 lineage), the most relevant IBV lineage of the Old-World. Our analysis, based on 807 partial S1 sequences of strains collected from 18 countries between 1993 and 2015, demonstrates that this genotype originated in China well before its first identification. After a prolonged local circulation, it started spreading to other European, Asian and Middle East countries in successive waves, which were mirrored by concomitant fluctuations in viral population size. Interestingly, the within-Europe spread was characterized by a higher estimated migration rate compared with the inter-continental one, potentially reflecting the closer geographic and economic relationships among these countries. Nevertheless, the colonization of new states by the GI-19 lineage appeared to occur mostly by single introduction events in both intra and inter-continental spread, likely because of epidemiological factor and health policy combination which seems to prevent the frequent introduction and mixing of different strains. On the other hand, the within Italy QX circulation reconstruction showed a much more intricate connection network among different locations, evidencing the difficulty in controlling IBV spread especially in highly densely poultry populated areas. The presence of several well supported epidemiological links among distantly related Italian regions testifies that animal transportation and indirect transmission routes rather than local airborne diffusion contribute to the QX success and persistence at local scale. Globally, the spreading dynamics and evolution of the QX genotype were reconstructed from its very origin to nowadays, demonstrating the need of more effective direct control measures, particularly within each country. Unfortunately, the incompleteness of available molecular epidemiology data represents an insurmountable limit which leaves many questions currently unsolved, thus highlighting the compulsoriness of a structured monitoring and data sharing system implementation.

Abstract
Two studies were conducted to assess the effects of dietary protein and Lys reduction on growth performance, carcass quality, N excretion, and plasma N profile in growing-finishing pigs from 35 to 180 kg. The growing trial was conducted with 72 gilts and 72 barrows with 6 pens per treatment and 6 gilts or 6 barrows per pen. Four diets with the same DE and NE were compared: 1) control diet, 2) diet with protein content reduced by 3% units compared with the control diet and supplemented with Lys HCl to match the requirements according to the 2012 NRC (FLys), 3) diet similar to FLys for protein level but supplemented with only 50% of the Lys HCl provided with FLys (-50% FLys), and 4) diet similar to FLys and -50% Flys for protein level with microencapsulated Lys added to supply 20% of the Lys provided by FLys (-80% MLys). Pigs fed the FLys diet performed in a similar manner and showed similar carcass characteristics to the control pigs. Pigs fed the -50% FLys diet had the lightest BW (P < 0.01) as well as the lightest carcass (P = 0.02) and trimmed thigh (P = 0.04) weights. Pigs fed the -80% MLys diet showed growth performance and carcass characteristics similar to the control pigs. The N balance study was conducted with 8 barrows arranged in a double replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. The control pigs had greater (P < 0.01) N intake and urinary and total N excretion compared with pigs fed the low-protein diets. The reduction of the dietary protein concentration by 3% units decreased total N excretion by an average of 24.5% and the greatest reduction of total N excretion was obtained by the -80% MLys diet (26.12%) compared with the control diet throughout the trial. No effect of dietary treatment was observed on the plasma concentrations of ammonia, urea, and total AA in the 80-kg pigs. Decreased plasma ammonia (P < 0.01) and urea (P = 0.03) concentrations were detected in the 120-kg pigs fed the low-protein diets. The 160-kg pigs fed the -80% MLys pigs had less total AA, indispensable AA in particular (P < 0.01), than pigs fed the other diets and decreased ammonia (P < 0.01) and urea (P = 0.05) concentrations than the control pigs. The results showed that the use of microencapsulated Lys, compared with both Lys HCl and dietary protein-bound Lys, can save CP and synthetic AA in diet formulation and can reduce N excretion in manure without adversely affecting the growth performance and carcass quality of heavy growing-finishing pigs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Lysozyme, obtained from egg white, is a potential food allergen used in the dairy industry to prevent late blowing of the loaf caused by the outgrowth of clostridial spores (Cl. butyricum and Cl. tyrobutyricum) during cheese aging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible correlation between egg protein allergy in pediatric age and sensitization to egg lysozyme, used for the preparation of Grana Padano cheese. METHODS The tolerability of Grana Padano cheese has been evaluated in pediatric patients allergic to egg proteins through an oral provocation test with increasing amounts of cheese containing, or not, lysozyme at 12 and 24 months of aging. RESULTS When lysozyme-sensitized children received 12-months aged and lysozyme-containing cheese, several immediate and late adverse reactions such as itching, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, dermatitis, rhinitis, bronchial asthma, urticaria, and angioedema were seen in 5 out of 21 subjects; only 1 out of 21 children showed an adverse reaction after challenge with 24-months-ripened lysozyme-containing cheese. CONCLUSIONS There is a possible relationship between the severity of allergic reactions and the lysozyme-specific IgE level in blood. In particular vomiting, hypotension, and abdominal pain were present when IgE level was higher than 7 kU/L. A ripening time of 24 months may reduce allergy problems when lysozyme-containing cheese is given to sensitized subjects, probably due to the hydrolysis of antigenic epitopes during aging.

Abstract
In April 2009, a novel H1N1 influenza A virus (pH1N1) was recognized as the cause of the flu pandemic in humans. Here, we report the isolation of pH1N1 virus from the lung homogenates of two cats, which died after severe respiratory symptoms. The cats belonged to a cat colony consisting of 90 caged cats and were found dead following a 2-week period of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in the colony. During the outbreak, 25 cats died and 50% of the animal colony showed anorexia, depression, respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. Histological examination of the lungs of the two tested cats displayed lesions centred on terminal airways with epithelial bronchiolar hyperplasia and alveolar necrosis. Influenza A virus was detected in the lung tissues by immunohistochemistry and real-time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR). Partial sequences of haemagglutinin (HA) genes and complete sequences of neuraminidase (NA) genes of the two isolates displayed high similarity to the pH1N1 viruses circulating in humans (99% for HA gene and 100% for NA gene). To determine whether the pandemic virus had circulated among cats, serum samples and pharyngeal swabs were collected from 38 cats of the colony. Serum samples were tested by ELISA to detect antibodies against pH1N1 nucleoprotein and by hemagglutination-inhibition test, while pharyngeal swabs were examined by pH1N1 specific rRT-PCR. Twenty-one (55%) of the tested cats carried antibodies against the isolated strain and two swabs were positive for the presence of pH1N1 RNA. Our results confirm that the pH1N1 virus was able to infect cats and raise the hypothesis of the circulation of the virus within the colony being due to cat-to-cat transmission. The case reported here provides, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first description of the pH1N1 infection involving numerous cats that lived in a restricted area with limited contact with humans.

Abstract
This study determined whether tributyrin and lactitol could synergistically facilitate the transition from milk to solid feed in nursery pigs. At 21 d after birth, 64 piglets were moved from the piggery to a production barn and fed a medicated diet. At 28 d after birth, the piglets were weighed and allotted into four groups and fed a standard nonmedicated diet (control) or the control diet with tributyrin (butanoic acid 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester; 10 g/kg), or with lactitol (beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->4)-D-sorbitol; 3 g/kg), or with tributyrin (10 g/kg) plus lactitol (3 g/kg). On d 0, 14, and 42 after being fed the control or experimental diets, the animals were weighed, and animal health, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were determined. On d 42, four piglets from each treatment were killed to measure the empty and full weight of the gut, as well as the weights of the liver and kidneys. The jejunum and cecum were sampled to analyze the luminal concentrations of lactic acid; short-chain fatty acids; and mono-, di-, and polyamines and to assess the mucosal status. Mortality after 42 d ranged from 19% for animals fed the control diet, to 6% for animals fed the tributyrin or lactitol diets, and to 0% for animals fed the tributyrin+lactitol diet. After 14 d, the ADG was 127% greater (P < 0.05) in animals fed the tributyrin+lactitol diet than in animals fed the control or tributyrin diets. After 42 d, animals fed the tributyrin+lactitol diet were heavier (P < 0.05) than animals fed the tributyrin diet. At slaughter, no differences (P > 0.05) in organ weights were observed. With the exception of animals fed the lactitol diet, wherein cecal lactic acid levels increased threefold (P < 0.01), the luminal concentrations of lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids were not different (P > 0.05). Among the various amines analyzed, the only response (P < 0.05) was a 66 and 49% decrease in histamine levels in the jejunum and cecum, respectively, in animals fed the tributyrin+lactitol diet compared to the control diet. In the jejunum of animals fed the lactitol or tributyrin+lactitol diets, the length of the villi was increased by 12% (P < 0.05) compared to animals fed the control diet, whereas the tributyrin diet did not have any effect on the villi (P > 0.05). In the cecum, the depths of the crypts were reduced (P < 0.001) by 18% in animals fed the lactitol diet and 45% in animals fed the tributyrin or tributyrin+lactitol diets compared to animals fed the control diet. In conclusion, a diet containing tributyrin and lactitol as nutribiotics resulted in lower histamine levels in the jejunum and cecum, as well as longer jejunal villi and shallower cecal crypts.

Abstract
Lower tract involvement of systemic sclerosis is an uncommon manifestation. In this study we have evaluated the functional and morphologic vesical changes in 23 female patients with systemic sclerosis to investigate if bladder dysfunction was correlated with an extended skin sclerosis and/or a more serious organ involvement. Urodynamic alterations were observed in only 3 cases. Urinary symptoms and urodynamic features were correlated neither with severity of vesical fibrosis nor with visceral involvement. Autonomic dysfunction was detected in 13 patients.

Abstract
The authors report an extremely rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate. No satisfactory clinical and pathological classification exists for this tumour, creating particular difficulties for therapeutic decisions and prognosis. Descriptions of cases with excellent survival rates are reported in the literature, to the extent that this is sometimes regarded as a low-malignancy tumour, but other reports also exist of massive diffusion of the pathology with fatal consequences. Advances in the knowledge of this tumour have enabled a number of earlier pathogenetic hypotheses to be ruled out, namely its possible derivation from ectopic salivary cells, ectopic periurethral glands or metaplastic urethral mucosa, but the origin of this carcinoma is still not certain. It is also difficult to differentiate this form from the typical adenocarcinoma and to make a prognosis for survival. In the case reported here, the final diagnosis was made on the lymph node biopsy obtained during surgery, given that a preoperative biopsy was not feasible owing to the scarcity of material available. The patient received standard hormonal therapy for prostate carcinoma.

Abstract
Gleason score has been identified as an important variable to predict disease extent and biologic behaviour of prostate cancer. However, the correlation between Gleason score of needle biopsy and surgical specimen is often poor. We studied 72 patients who underwent needle biopsy and radical prostatectomy to correlate Gleason score with PSA, clinical and pathological tumour stage. Only 47.2% of Gleason scores were identical in the biopsy and specimens, 37.5% were undergraded and 15.2% were overgraded. Correlations between clinical and pathological stage were identical in 30.5% of patients, 61.1% of patients were understaged and 8.3% overstaged. In conclusion, accuracy of clinical staging and grading of prostate cancer is low. Although the Gleason score on needle biopsy might be useful to predict the final stage and grade, correlation with surgical specimen is poor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare and assess the function of ileal neobladders with different reconfiguration and with several types of ureteral reimplantation. METHODS Forty-five male patients underwent radical cystectomy and detubularized ileal neobladder. In 20 patients an ileal neobladder was carried out according to Studer's technique, in 12 a 'W'- and in 13 a 'U'-shaped neobladder. In the Studer's patients 60 cm of ileum was used, in the 'W' 40 and in the 'U' 30 cm. For the uretero-ileal anastomosis Nesbit's technique was utilized in the Studer's, in the 'W' and 'U' neobladders Camey Le Duc's technique was performed instead. Four patients underwent a serous-lined extramural tunnel reimplantation. Follow-up included a functional and morphological study of the urinary system and a urodynamic study. RESULTS All Nesbit's uretero-ileum anastomoses resulted refluent when the reservoir was filled up, 15 of 50 ureteral reimplantations according to the Camey Le Duc technique showed reflux at full filling. At 3, 6 and 12 months follow-up, the double reconfiguration reservoirs (Studer's and 'W') showed a larger capacity and a lower maximum pressure than neobladders with a single bending. At 12 months, continence and the voiding interval time was significantly higher in the double reconfiguration than in the 'U' neobladders. CONCLUSION The double reconfiguration of the reservoir ('W') might be preferable to that with a single one. As for the type of ureteral anastomosis to select, the problem is still debatable even if in our case-control study we have had better results in terms of reflux and stenosis with the uretero-enteric anastomosis with Nesbit's and associated afferent long tubular ileal limb than with Studer's technique.

Abstract
Lower urinary tract involvement is an uncommon manifestation of systemic sclerosis; however, it may represent a troublesome disturbance affecting the quality of life in systemic sclerosis patients. Here we report the case of a middle-aged woman with a 5-year history of systemic sclerosis, who developed severe and progressive urinary bladder sclerosis. This report is particularly interesting because of the severity of the bladder involvement, which required surgical treatment.

Abstract
Sclerotherapy for hydroceles was performed in 18 patients. Cutaneous anaesthesia was induced with an anaesthetic cream (lidocaine and prilocaine, EMLA cream) and a fibrin sealant (Tissucol) was injected into the sac after fluid aspiration. Patients experienced no pain during needle insertion and sclerosant procedure; 2 recurrences were observed during follow-up. EMLA cream anaesthesia and fibrin adhesive sclerotherapy represent a useful alternative to surgical treatment of hydroceles.

Abstract
A case of extrarenal spreading of transitional cell carcinoma caused by rupture of ureterohydronephrosis by ureteral transitional cell carcinoma is reported. Ultrasonography and CT revealed the presence of a severe right ureterohydronephrosis with large septa and a 2 cm diameter exophytic neoplasia of the middle ureter. Nephroureterectomy was performed with excision of a perirenal mass. Histologic examination revealed the presence of transitional cell carcinoma in the perirenal mass, caused by dissemination after renal rupture. CT and ultrasonography were not able to differentiate hydronephrosis from pericapsular spreading because of the extreme disruption of the renal parenchyma.

Abstract
Sarcomas are neoplasms originating from connective tissues of any anatomical region; the sarcoma of spermatic cord is a rare neoplasm with only little more than two hundred cases described in the literature. Rhabdomyosarcomas in childhood and leiomyosarcomas in adults are the most frequent histological types. Liposarcomas, fibrosarcomas and osteosarcomas are less frequent. The spermatic cord liposarcoma originates from the spermatic cord fatty tissue and therefore it consist of adipose cells, fibroblasts and myxomatosus cells; such neoplasms are usually very well differentiated. Diagnosis is suggested by the appearance of a progressively enlarging mass and by echotomography which shows a solid or liquid mass of the spermatic cord. Therapy consists of surgical intervention (orchifunicolectomy) which also allows a correct histological diagnosis. The case of a 56 year-old male who underwent left orchifunicolectomy for a sarcoma of spermatic cord occasionally discovered during surgical repair of a left groin hernia is reported. Six months after the intervention the patient is in good condition and there is no evidence of relapse.

Abstract
Fracture of the penis is not a frequent event and it consists of a rupture of the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa and sometimes of the urethra; the lesion occurs when the penis is erect because during erection the tunica albuginea is very thin and not flexible and it can be easily damaged by a trauma; most lesions occur during intercourse for impact of the erect penis against the female perineum or the pubic synphisis, but lesions during masturbation, fightings or falling off the bed are also described [1-2-3]. Clinically there are pain, detumescence, hematoma and recurvatum of the penis toward the opposite side of the lesion and hematuria if also the urethra is damaged. Usually diagnosis is quite easy with a good anamnesis, clinical examination and echotomography which can reveal presence of hematoma and hypoechogenic areas along the tunica albuginea or the urethra that appears irregular. Nowadays, fractures of the penis need a surgical approach to obtain good results avoiding consequences such as recurvatum or fibrotic areas [3-4-7-8]. We describe two cases of fracture of the penis occurred in two young men during masturbation and treated surgically with excellent results: twelve and eighteen months respectively after surgery patients are well and can enjoy a normal sexual activity with no problems at all.

Abstract
The use of absorbable staples may allow to reduce the operating time of orthotopic bladder replacement. We report our experience in 14 patients with a modification of the Studer technique using absorbable PolyGIA instruments. The technique has been shown to be simple and quick to perform (time for pouch creation 15-40 minutes, mean 16 minutes) with no significant intraoperative difficulties. Urodynamic data and continence are satisfactory and seem comparable to different procedures and not related to staples' use. The main question remains if the reduced operating time equalizes the high cost of staple devices.

Thirty-four patients after retropubic radical prostatectomy, were evaluated with urodynamic studies. Patients were divided in three groups depending on the degree of urinary continence. A statistically significant difference was found between different groups for the mean functional profile length and maximal urethral closure pressure. Detrusor instability was detected in 11 patients with moderate incontinence and in 1 patient with severe incontinence. Neither differences of age, previous prostatic surgery, tumour extension, nor preservation of the neurovascular bundles had any significant influence on recovery of continence.

Abstract
A total of 208 patients with superficial transitional-cell carcinoma of the bladder (STCC) after transurethral resection were treated with 30 mg intravesical instillations of mitomycin C (MMC) weekly for 8 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance doses for 12 months. All patients were controlled with a urinary cytological examination every 2 months and with cystoscopy every 3 months. Mean follow-up was 47.8 and 49.3 months in the prophylaxis and control groups, respectively. The incidence of tumor recurrences at the 12th and 48th months was 29 and 44%, respectively, in the MMC group and 45 and 58%, respectively, in the control group. Progression evaluated by grade and stage was significantly higher in the control group. These data indicate that MMC appears to be effective in the prophylaxis of STCC, but the possibility of long-term relapse suggests maintenance of a longer therapy.

Abstract
Electrovaporization is a new and potentially useful modification of transurethral resection of the prostate which is rapidly becoming a treatment of choice for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia. We report our experience with 22 patients treated using the Circon Acmi Grooved Vaportrode vaporization electrode. Procedures were carried out using the standard technique of electrovaporization with general or regional anaesthesia. Mean operative time was 40 minutes (range 25-65 minutes) and all patients were discharged without catheter after 1 or 2 days. Symptom score, peak uroflow and postvoid residual urine showed statistically significant improvement at 3 months (p < 0.01). There were no significant complications. Transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate seems to be a easy and safe procedure with significantly lower costs and excellent results. However, long-term efficacy and complications need to be evaluated in multicentre clinical trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We report our preliminary experience with a vacuum constriction device and topical minoxidil for the management of impotence. METHODS We evaluated 18 patients, 8 with neurogenic and 10 with psychogenic impotence with a vacuum constriction device and topical minoxidil (1 ml 2% solution). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS All patients responded to treatment but 100 cases refused home use because of psychological impact. Twelve patients did not need the application of the constrictive ring because of the erection facilitation effect of minoxidil. No side effects were observed. In our opinion the association of the vacuum constriction device with topical minoxidil might be useful in the treatment of impotence; however, several factors must be evaluated in selecting patients. Application of minoxidil before vacuum constriction device might be useful to reduce the time of device application, to increase the efficacy of the device and in some cases to avoid the use of the constrictive ring.

Abstract
The mineral content of bone was measured in 134 male patients who underwent ureterosigmoidostomy within the past 18 years. Moreover, the principal humoral indices of bone metabolism, together with hematic pH and alkaline reserve (BE) values were evaluated. This study showed that after approximately 6 years from a ureterosigmoidostomy there was significant bone demineralization. These data, supported by a parallel increase of serum osteocalcin, show that ureterosigmoidostomy represents a risk factor for osteoporosis especially in those patients who already have below normal values of bone mineral density prior to surgery.
