Incorporating Psychological Science Into Policy Making: The Case of Misinformation

The spread of false and misleading information in online social networks is a global problem in need of urgent solutions. It is also a policy problem because misinformation can harm both the public and democracies. To address the spread of misinformation, policymakers require a successful interface between science and policy, as well as a range of evidence-based solutions that respect fundamental rights while efficiently mitigating the harms of misinformation online. In this article, we discuss how regulatory and nonregulatory instruments can be informed by scientific research and used to reach EU policy objectives. First, we consider what it means to approach misinformation as a policy problem. We then outline four building blocks for cooperation between scientists and policymakers who wish to address the problem of misinformation: understanding the misinformation problem, understanding the psychological drivers and public perceptions of misinformation, finding evidence-based solutions, and co-developing appropriate policy measures. Finally, through the lens of psychological science, we examine policy instruments that have been proposed in the EU, focusing on the strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation 2022.

Physical Activity Is Associated with Attention Capacity in Adolescents

OBJECTIVE

To assess the relationships among physical activity, measured objectively, and attention capacity in European adolescents.

STUDY DESIGN

The study included 273 adolescents, aged 12.5-17.5 years, who participated in the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Study. Participants wore a uniaxial accelerometer for 7 days to measure physical activity. The d2 Test of Attention was administered to assess attention capacity. Multivariate analyses were used to study the association of attention capacity with each measure of physical activity. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine thresholds that best discriminate between low and good attention capacity.

RESULTS

After controlling for potential confounding variables (age, sex, body mass index, parental educational level, fat mass, aerobic fitness, and center), adolescents' attention capacity test performances were significantly and positively associated with longer time spent in moderate or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in free-living conditions (P < .05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses revealed that the physical activity thresholds that best discriminated between low/good attention capacities were ≥41 min·day(-1) for moderate, ≥12 min·day(-1) for vigorous, and ≥58 min·day(-1) for MVPA.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest that promoting MVPA may be have a beneficial effect on attention capacity, an important component of cognition, in adolescents.

Interventions to promote healthy eating habits: evaluation and recommendations

Although in several EU Member States many public interventions have been running for the prevention and/or management of obesity and other nutrition-related health conditions, few have yet been formally evaluated. The multidisciplinary team of the EATWELL project will gather benchmark data on healthy eating interventions in EU Member States and review existing information on the effectiveness of interventions using a three-stage procedure (i) Assessment of the intervention's impact on consumer attitudes, consumer behaviour and diets; (ii) The impact of the change in diets on obesity and health and (iii) The value attached by society to these changes, measured in life years gained, cost savings and quality-adjusted life years. Where evaluations have been inadequate, EATWELL will gather secondary data and analyse them with a multidisciplinary approach incorporating models from the psychology and economics disciplines. Particular attention will be paid to lessons that can be learned from private sector that are transferable to the healthy eating campaigns in the public sector. Through consumer surveys and workshops with other stakeholders, EATWELL will assess the acceptability of the range of potential interventions. Armed with scientific quantitative evaluations of policy interventions and their acceptability to stakeholders, EATWELL expects to recommend more appropriate interventions for Member States and the EU, providing a one-stop guide to methods and measures in interventions evaluation, and outline data collection priorities for the future.

The criteria used by editors of scientific dental journals in the assessment of manuscripts submitted for publication

OBJECTIVE

To examine the factors that influence editors of scientific dental journals in deciding whether or not to publish submitted manuscripts and to determine if there is a consistent pattern for their decisions.

DESIGN

The study was by a postal questionnaire.

SETTING

The questionnaires were sent to editors of 50 major English language scientific dental journals in September 1996.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Respondents were asked to rank a number of frequently stated criteria for success in the production of papers. The editors were asked to suggest other factors which 'influenced their decision to accept or reject a manuscript'. Additionally they were asked to suggest factors that 'gave them most heartache', 'would make their life easier' and 'would expedite publication'. Information was sought on editorial policy regarding the use of referees.

RESULTS

Forty two editors responded (84%). 6 replies were from journals regarded as 'generalist', and excluded from the final analysis. Factors which most frequently led to rejection included 'poor construction of the paper' (cited by 49% of respondents) and 'poor research design' (37%). Factors which editors valued highly were 'scientific novelty and timeliness of the topic' (29%). Factors that caused most problems were 'poor use of English and careless preparation of the manuscript' (46%). 'Attention to guide lines to authors' was cited by 68% of editors as a means of expediting publication.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of these results can help authors to prepare manuscripts that are more attractive to editors of dental journals. Editors valued papers that were appropriate to the stated aims of their journal and regarded the significance and validity of the research work as the most important aspects of manuscripts submitted for publication.

Effects of high pressure and temperature on the wild-type and F29W mutant forms of the N-domain of avian troponin C

The N-domain of troponin C (residues 1-90) regulates muscle contraction through conformational changes induced by Ca2+ binding. A mutant form of the isolated domain of avian troponin C (F29W) has been used in previous studies to observe conformational changes that occur upon Ca2+ binding, and pressure and temperature changes. Here we set out to determine whether the point mutation itself has any effects on the protein structure and its stability to pressure and temperature in the absence of Ca2+. Molecular dynamics simulations of the wild-type and mutant protein structures suggested that both structures are identical except in the main chain and the loop I region near the mutation site. Also, the simulations proposed that an additional cavity had been created in the core of the mutant protein. To determine whether such a cavity would affect the behavior of the protein when subjected to high pressures and temperatures, we performed 1H-NMR experiments at 300, 400, and 500 MHz on the wild-type and F29W mutant forms of the chicken N-domain troponin C in the absence of Ca2+. We found that the mutant protein at 5 kbar pressures had a destabilized beta-sheet between the Ca2+-binding loops, an altered environment near Phe-26, and reduced local motions of Phe-26 and Phe-75 in the core of the protein, probably due to a higher compressibility of the mutant. Under the same pressure conditions, the wild-type domain exhibited little change. Furthermore, the hydrophobic core of the mutant protein denatured at temperatures above 47 degrees C, while the wild-type was resistant to denaturation up to 56 degrees C. This suggests that the partially exposed surface mutation (F29W) significantly destabilizes the N-domain of troponin C by altering the packing and dynamics of the hydrophobic core.

Involvement of cysteine 289 in the catalytic activity of an NADP(+)-specific fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase from Vibrio harveyi

Fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (Vh.ALDH) from the luminescent bacterium, Vibrio harveyi, may be implicated in controlling luminescence as it catalyzes the oxidation of the fatty aldehyde substrate for the light-emitting reaction. On the basis of the amino-terminal sequence of Vh.ALDH, a degenerate probe was used to screen a genomic library of V harveyi in pBR322, a positive clone was selected containing the Vh.ALDH gene and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the enzyme was purified to homogeneity. Although the sequence of the V. harveyi ALDH significantly diverged from other aldehyde dehydrogenases, mutation of a conserved cysteine implicated in catalysis completely inactivated the enzyme without loss of its ability to bind nucleotides, consistent with a catalytic role for this residue. Using absorption and fluorescence assays for NAD(P)H, it was shown that NAD+ and NADP+ bound to the same site and that saturation of Vh.ALDH with NADP+ occurred with a Michaelis constant (Km = 1.4 microM) over 40 times lower than that reported for other aldehyde dehydrogenases. Although V. harveyi aldehyde dehydrogenase is unique in terms of its high specificity for NADP+, the identification of a catalytic conserved cysteine in Vh.ALDH clearly indicates that a highly related mechanism and structure have been retained among even the most diverged aldehyde dehydrogenases.

Calreticulin, and not calsequestrin, is the major calcium binding protein of smooth muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum and liver endoplasmic reticulum

The distribution of calsequestrin and calreticulin in smooth muscle and non-muscle tissues was investigated. Immunoblots of endoplasmic reticulum proteins probed with anti-calreticulin and anti-calsequestrin antibodies revealed that only calreticulin is present in the rat liver endoplasmic reticulum. Membrane fractions isolated from uterine smooth muscle, which are enriched in sarcoplasmic reticulum, contain a protein band which is immunoreactive with anti-calreticulin but not with anti-calsequestrin antibodies. The presence of calreticulin in these membrane fractions was further confirmed by 45Ca2+ overlay and "Stains-All" techniques. Calreticulin was also localized to smooth muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum by the indirect immunofluorescence staining of smooth muscle cells with anti-calreticulin antibodies. Furthermore, both liver and uterine smooth muscle were found to contain high levels of mRNA encoding calreticulin, whereas no mRNA encoding calsequestrin was detected. We have employed an ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by Mono Q fast protein liquid chromatography, as a method by which calsequestrin and calreticulin can be isolated from whole tissue homogenates, and by which they can be clearly resolved from one another, even where present in the same tissue. Calreticulin was isolated from rabbit and bovine liver, rabbit brain, rabbit and porcine uterus, and bovine pancreas and was identified by its amino-terminal amino acid sequence. Calsequestrin cannot be detected in preparations from whole liver tissue, and only very small amounts of calsequestrin are detectable in ammonium sulfate extracts of uterine smooth muscle. We conclude that calreticulin, and not calsequestrin, is a major Ca2+ binding protein in liver endoplasmic reticulum and in uterine smooth muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calsequestrin and calreticulin may perform parallel functions in the lumen of the sarcoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum.
